This was
all incredibly boring.
Yuugi was
seated in the throne room, in the grand hall of the Palace. Once the wonder had
died down, and the electric thrill of being permitted to sit on the throne, it was
actually horribly dull. One of the financial managers for the palace was in
front of him, reading off a list of prices for things Yuugi didn’t know about,
and didn’t care of. At first, he’d tried to pay attention, but he found himself
blanking the man more often than he’d like. The only excitement came from the
person seated on the floor, next to the throne.
Atemu
looked strangely at home on the floor. He was seated, with his shoulder against
the armrest. One leg was laying flat on the ground, and the other was up, knee
bent, with his right forearm resting on it. His left hand was in his lap,
making sure his wrap didn’t move north, so he unintentionally flashed the room.
The second hand had amused Yuugi; it was a practise most slaves had to learnt,
not Pharaohs. But, actually, he looked
completely relaxed. He blissfully ignored the map, instead occupying himself
with examining the throne room from this new perspective. Yuugi was bizarrely
envious.
“...
Meaning that, unfortunately, we will have to pay a tenth more on the price of
the fruits we import from Cyprus and Greece, or find another country willing to
export them. What do you suggest, my king?”
Suddenly
conscious he had been gazing at Atemu, Yuugi turned back to the man waiting for
his answer. He didn’t have a clue what to say.
He hadn’t been listening, and even if he had, he probably wouldn’t’ve
known the answer.
“I-...
uh...”
He felt
someone’s fingers on his ankle. Glancing down, he was surprised to find Atemu
staring at him. As he watched, the man gave him an amused smile, and a nod,
mouthing ‘Leave you to choose’ at
him.
“... I’ll
trust your... uhm... judgement, on this, si-... uh... yeah.”
The
throne room had already been silent, but it seemed to get even quieter. Yuugi could
feel a blush creeping up his neck, but to his surprise, the financer didn’t
seem to care. He gave a gracious bow, and murmured, “As you wish, my Pharaoh.”, before doing what everyone seemed to do, and bow out of
the room.
The
second the door was shut behind him, Yuugi let out a heavy sigh, and slumped
down in the throne, “Aaah! I thought he was never gonna go away!”
Next to
him, the real Pharaoh gave a short chuckle, and began pouring water from a jug,
into a small cup. Usually, this job was done by some beautiful, scantily clad
dancer, but a few words from Yuugi had changed that. He didn’t want the real Pharaoh out of his sight, after the
supposed execution.
Yuugi
took the cup when it was handed to him, took a brief sip and then paused. His
expression changed to a frown; “... You know, I expected you to be more...”
“More
what?” Atemu
was pouring another cup of water for himself. Something that
would get a few raised eyebrows, if anyone was watching.
“... I dunno. Dignified... or...”
“Arrogant?”
Yuugi immediately
jerked to look at him, disclaim it, and apologise, but Atemu was already
smirking at him. Taking a sip from the cup of water he wasn’t meant to have,
the Pharaoh leant back onto one hand.
“I don’t
have to be, uh... ‘dignified’ here. You’re the one that has to be dignified.
My lord...” The Pharaoh’s expression
split into a grin, and he faked a short bow. Yuugi felt heat rising to his
face, for the millionth time, and looked away. Atemu didn’t notice, or he
decided to preserve Yuugi’s embarrassment, but he carried on speaking.
“Besides,
it’s nice. Not having to pay attention, I mean. I’ve spent my whole life having
to pay attention, and make judgements, and make decisions. I hate it. Almost
makes me wish I could live your life instead, y’know?”
Yuugi
glanced at him, but only briefly, “... You... wouldn’t wanna
live like I do. No-one ever knows your name. It’s always just ‘Slave, do this.’ Or ‘Go find more wine for the High Priest!’ or
‘You won’t go to bed until this entire
corridor is clean.’ It gets... it wears you down, really fast.” The slave
glanced at Atemu, again, but the Pharaoh was already looking at him. The two
boys shared a stare, and Yuugi was almost mesmerised.
“Guess
it’s not as good as it seems, then.” The Pharaoh took another sip from his cup.
Shrugging a bit, he tilted his head on one side, “... Hey, what did you wish
for?”
“W-what?” Mild panic threaded through Yuugi
hazy, Pharaoh-influenced mind.
“I said, what did you wish for? From the Puzzle, I mean. You said
you made a wish.”
“O-oh...”
His hand moved down to his chest, and he held the Puzzle. It hadn’t felt
‘alive’ since the night he’d found it. “I wished... it was...” He couldn’t get
out of the question this time. Closing his eyes, he forced his voice to be
calm, and took a deep breath. “... There’s a person, that means a lot to me,
but I’m not sure they know my name. He-... they’re important, around the
palace. I’m just a slave. So... when I was holding the Puzzle, going to sleep,
I wished that...” His throat felt tight, and speaking seemed hard, but he
carried on anyway, “... That I could get a chance to be close
to them. So they’d know who I am, y’know? Even if they didn’t like me. Just so
that... I could have a chance.”
“I see.”
When Yuugi turned to look, his Pharaoh was giving him an intense stare, and he
had to look away again. He was still blushing, no matter how hard he tried to
fight it. “And he’s an important person? And of course, by becoming the
Pharaoh, everyone wants to be close to you...” Atemu’s voice drifted off for a
moment, before he seemed to wake up, and glance at Yuugi again. “I’ll warn you,
then. Just because you’re the Pharaoh, it doesn’t mean that everyone likes you.
Some people might despise you, even though it seems like they like you. You
can’t just trust everyone.”
“Oh,
no!” Yuugi’s
eyes went wide, and he turned to Atemu, “That’s not-... everyone respects the
Pharaoh. Jounouchi and I-...” He hesitated, then decided to plough on anyway. Atemu had told him a
secret, right? “... We used to... to listen in. Not for anything malicious! Just... just ‘cos we could. We
wanted to know what was going on, most of the time. So, we’d listen in, on
meeting, on talks...” Atemu’s expression had changed to a grin, but he tried to
ignore it, “... And, everything you do, is-... is-...” He couldn’t say it, and
look at him at the same time. But, the urge to shower his beloved with praise
was overpowering. So, instead, he looked at the floor, “... Everything you do, is just so... you’re so smart, and strong... like the
Son of Ra that you are. It’s-.... you-...” He shook
his head, breaking off mid-sentence. He couldn’t find a way to continue.
For a
moment, the throne room was left in complete silence. Then, he heard the sound
of someone setting a cup down. Distantly, he realised Atemu was moving, then he felt a warm hand on his chin.
The
Pharaoh tilted Yuugi’s face up, slowly. They were close enough that he could
feel Atemu’s breath on his skin, and it was sending shivers across him.
Swallowing, the shaking seemed to get worse, as Atemu started speaking. His
voice was somehow richer, and deeper, and smoother, than Yuugi had ever
realised.
“...
Thank you, for your praise, Yuugi. The person that you want to be close to...
even if you are not the Pharaoh, and even if you hold no position of honour...
I think you are a good enough person that, he would look at you anyway.”
Just when
Yuugi thought, heaven didn’t get much closer than this, it happened. Leaning
over the throne, Atemu’s other hand came to rest over Yuugi’s forearm on the
armrest. Leaning close, his lips brushed over the slave’s mouth. There was a
pause, as he gave him time to realise, before he leaned in for a real kiss.
Atemu’s
mouth was on his, and the Pharaoh’s body was near enough to touch, and Yuugi’s
body felt hot. The Pharaoh’s mouth
tasted like nothing he’d imagined, in all his dreams, and somehow better. As
the kiss went on, Yuugi’s spare arm rose, and his fingers hit the Pharaoh’s
chest. Those pale fingers stroked the man’s chest, delicately, then went down his stomach. The body under his hand felt
toned, and unbelievably warm. Finally, the slave’s hand jerked to the side, and
looped around his love’s waist, drawing him in closer.
As if his
was an invitation, Atemu’s tongue brushed against the boy’s mouth, then forced it’s way in. Yuugi let out a little yelp under him, then began to shiver, before he pushed back into the kiss.
Repressed emotions were finally let loose, and Yuugi pulled the bigger man
against his own body roughly. The kiss got more insistent, both tasting each
other; the Pharaoh was almost in Yuugi’s lap, and neither of them cared. Then
it was all broken.
There was
a harsh knock at the door. It rang out over the whole chamber, feeling much too
loud, and Atemu jerked back. The kiss broke, and the two of them stared at each
other. Yuugi’s eyes were wide, and slightly scared, but Atemu was smiling. Smirking, more accurately. The insistent knock sounded
again, and Atemu drew back from him.
Yuugi
felt mildly cheated, as the other man took up his space on the floor again. His
entire body was shivering, and still seemed unbelievably hot. Finally gathering
his thoughts, he had enough presence of mind to yell out a shaky “C-... come in!”
The door
opened, and Yuugi was slightly confused as the Guard Captain came in. He’d
hoped he wouldn’t have to talk to his man again, who wanted to execute his
Pharaoh. His Atemu.
“My
Pharaoh...?”
“What is
it?” He sounded mildly irritated, which was how he felt.
The
Captain baulked a little, moving his eyes to the ground, before finally
speaking.
“It’s...
it’s about the slave, Atemu.”
Apparently,
he hadn’t noticed said ‘slave’ sat next to the Pharaoh’s throne. Either that, or he didn’t care. “What about him?”
“What....
does his highness intend to do with him? The day is coming to an end.”
Yuugi
blinked. Outside, the sun was just starting to go down, past the horizon. As a
slave, Yuugi’s day would have only been about halfway done. But, as a Pharaoh,
it was dinner time, then a few short hours of leisure, then sleep.
“I told
you. He’ll gonna stay with me, in my chambers. Is
there a problem with that?”
The
Captain looked up, halfway, then down again, “... I suppose not, my king...”
Something
wasn’t quite right. Confused, Yuugi glanced at Atemu. The real Pharaoh was
glaring at the Guard with an expression of extreme dislike. Yuugi couldn’t
figure out why. The man hadn’t given even the slightest sign of disobedience,
or done anything wrong. Giving up on getting help, he looked at the Guard
Captain again. He was still standing there, looking
agonized, “... Is that all?”
The
Captain looked up at him, and his expression was of one fighting not to say
something. Finally, though, he shook his head and gave a quick bow.
Disappearing from the room, he shut the door a little too hard. Yuugi was baffled.
At his
side, Atemu made a soft, growling noise. Yuugi blinked at him, and he looked
away. “... The Captain of the Guard... despicable man...”
Yuugi
blinked, again, “Despicable? Why?”
“I’m not
sure, but always has been. There’s something about him
that I don’t like.”
The slave
on the throne gave him a confused look . He couldn’t
sense anything wrong with the Guard Captain, but Atemu was clearly angry about
something. Dismissing it, he shrugged a little and stood up. It was time to
leave the throne room, to retire back to the Pharaoh’s chambers. Turning to
look at Atemu, he felt a little thrill.
Retiring
to the Pharaoh’s chambers, with Atemu. Alone, with his beloved, in his
bedroom. And he’d been kissed... Yuugi’s hand rose to his mouth, and he
felt the familiar rush of nerves and excitement.
Atemu was
looking at him, before finally standing up. As they stared at each other, the
real Pharaoh began to grin, dangerously. The Pharaoh’s eyes were gleaming a
little, and Yuugi felt a soft throb of anxiety.
“A bath
before dinner, for my lord Pharaoh, I think.”
Atemu’s
words were low, and purring, and Yuugi’s breath came out in a sigh.
“Y-...
yeah, maybe.”

usual, but oh well. Aiming for a seven-chapter fic. Roughly.)
