Kaiba Mokuba sighed and pushed back his hair as he glared at the television screen. "Too late. Damn it, too fucking late."
Atemu gave his young friend a compassionate glance. "We tried Mokuba, but it was too late from the night they disappeared. We..."
"Why can't we find them? They're getting closer and closer and we are as far away as ever. Seto doesn't see it. He thinks Otogi is paranoid and reacting to what happened a couple years ago." The black-haired teen clenched his fists in impotent rage.
"Seto has always believed he was invincible," Atemu conceded. "Even if he saw the danger he would not acknowledge it. This is the sixth of his and Otogi's friend's attacked in as many months. But only now that there are people killed does it makes the news. This should have been put out as a public warning when the first victims were attacked. Now there are two lives gone."
"It didn't matter then. Remember what the cop told Otogi? That it was just a misadventure and no crime had been committed. No crime - sodomy isn't real sex so forced sodomy isn't rape. Not a crime. Bastard bigots. Only reason they started paying attention was because Pegasus is too wealthy and well-known to be swept under the rug." Abruptly, Mokuba stiffened. "Fuck, I have to get to the hospital. If Pegasus sees this, it will set him back. He's just starting to venture out of his room."
When his Mokuba started to run out, Atemu caught him by the shoulder. "One moment please. I need to speak with you privately."
Mokuba weighed his options then nodded. "Yeah I want to talk to you too," He conceded reluctantly. "Five minutes though, because I know his routine. I only have about twenty minutes to get there."
"That's fine." Atemu led him into his private study. Ignoring the prized view of the city skyline, he turned to face Mokuba. "I am worried for you, Cousin. I think that you are letting your natural gratitude and hero worship for the man who saved you trick you into believing you have deep feelings for Pegasus. I feel it would be best that from now on you let one of us accompany you when you go see him." He actually wasn't truly concerned, his lover Yugi was and Atemu wanted Yugi to be happy so he was talking to Mokuba.
The younger Kaiba was silent for a moment, his face completely void of expression then, in a voice colder than an arctic wind, he said, "Never call me that." At Atemu's confused expression, the teen went on, "I hadn't planned on speaking to you about this until Seto was safe, but I just can't stomach you calling me that." The ice cracked and fury whipped through the opening, howling out from Mokuba to blow across Atemu's stunned look. "You lousy piece of shit. You seduced my brother, made him your lover, and when you met Yugi, you tossed him away like garbage. I remember that time clearly. You met Yugi on a Wednesday night and by Friday you were living together. You and Seto were together for years and you threw him away like he meant nothing. You were his cousin, his best friend, and his lover, and you treated him with less care than most would a whore."
Gasping with shock, Atemu breathed, "He told you this?" He never thought Seto would discuss their relationship with Mokuba, never thought their affair would ever be mentioned again.
"I heard him and Otogi talking. Do you know he tried to commit suicide? That Otogi stopped him? Fuck no you don't because you don't care about the damage you caused. So yeah, don’t ever call me 'cousin.' If I didn't need your help protecting Seto and Pegasus, I'd beat you bloody and walk away. When this is done I will leave and never speak to you again. But until then, you owe Seto the caring and protection you didn't give him in the past."
Supplicating, Atemu held out his hand. "Mokuba you don't understa..."
"Yeah I do. More than you probably think. Oh, and about my feelings for Pegasus. They are none of your business. I don't want your worry or concern. But they existed before the attack and, if anything, have only gotten stronger. I love him and he was falling in love with me. One day when he's strong enough, he'll remember that. And even if he doesn't I'll spend my life caring for him. Not out of pity or some misguided hero worship and gratitude, but because of love, true love." The ice in his blue-gray gaze scorched Atemu to the bone. "I learned that from my brother. I pity Yugi because you don't know it and never will." Spinning on his heel, wild black hair whipping behind him, lashing the skin of his once-cousin, he stalked out of the house.
Atemu felt as if a spike had been driven through his heart. Breath laboring, hands clutching his chest as if to stem the flow of blood from the invisible wound, he staggered out into the hall. He froze when he saw his current lover standing perfectly still, skin paler than moonlight, and tears falling from his glittering amethyst eyes. He didn't need to know that Yugi had heard everything. "Yugi..." He husked. "It's not..."
Tears still falling, Yugi held up his hand for silence. Not knowing what he could say, Atemu he shut his mouth. "You lied to me." Yugi's voice was little more than a whisper. "All this time it’s been a lie."
"Yugi please..."
"When we met, you saved me from jumping off that bridge. You told me that my unfaithful lover wasn't worth death. You said you knew my pain, that you would help me through it. You claimed your lover was unfaithful too. You... we... To protect me you said... you moved in to protect me. But..." The smaller man was trembling violently.
"I did. I fell in love with you in that instant when I saw you on the ledge about to jump. I knew you were my heart and soul. I couldn't... let you go. Yes I lied, but only to save you." Desperate to stop the tears of his lover, to stop the words that would end them, Atemu reached out. His heart, beating fast with pain and denial, sped up as Yugi stepped out of his reach.
His voice a bare whisper now, Yugi agreed, "Yes you saved me... and tossed Seto off that bridge instead. He was your lover for years. You didn't lie about that, I know. But he was never unfaithful. You were... with me. Do you know what you have done? Of what you will cost me?" Sobs began to shake his frame violently. "You... you... How long Atemu? How long until you throw me off that bridge too? How long until you fall in love with someone else - your 'true' soul mate?"
"Never! Yugi I swear, never. I cared for Seto, I still do. I cherish our times together, but compared to you... Nothing compares to you." But his words fell on empty space. Yugi had turned and run up the stairs, his sobs loud and wrenching until they ended with the slamming of a door.
Clenching his fist Atemu began to curse the fates. It was bad enough that is destined soul mate had run from him, but now just when he found a modicum of happiness it was in danger of being ripped away. The damn Kaiba's could rot for all he cared. He was done with them and it was his mistake in staying close. Something he'd fix very soon. But first he had to repair the damage done to his current situation. Glowing faintly, he mounted the stairs and opened the door. Although he still heard the sobs of his lover plainly... no matter where he looked, Yugi was not in the room.
Could it be...magic?

Mokuba ran into the hospital room with seven minutes to spare. He didn't care about speeding tickets when he raced to the hospital and disregarded the 'no running in the hall rule' in his rush.
Seeing Pegasus was too damn important to let pissant rules slow him down.
His silver-haired love was standing at the window, arms clasped defensively at his waist, and eyes trained on the moonlit garden just visible through the barred windows. Taking in the wine red robe over oyster satin pajama's, a favorite outfit of both of theirs, Mokuba felt a bubble of warmth expand in his chest driving out the cold rage and sickness. "You were expecting me."
Still gripping his middle protectively, Pegasus spun to face him. "Yes. You're always here when I need you." He tightened his hold on his belly. Mokuba crossed and lifted the tightly-held arms then stepped under them and into an embrace.
"I love you. I'll aways be here for you. You know that." He snuggled into the broad chest. "You're tense as a spring so you obviously needed me."
"I... Something's wrong. I've felt it for a few days now, but it's worse. Tell me... you know don't you?" Pegasus loved it when the other man pressed his way past his barriers and made room in his arms. Even now, with dread pressing down on him from all sides, he couldn't find it in himself to release Mokuba. "If it's bad I'd rather hear it from you than the television." In that statement he showed he knew why Mokuba was visiting so late at night.
"It's bad..." Knowing there was no other way, but to say it straight out, Mokuba closed his eyes and wrapped both arms around the older man. "They found two men dead in a warehouse by the river. Last seen at Ni-chome." He swallowed hard and tightened his grip when Pegasus automatically recoiled. "I think... I think the killers might be the same ones who attacked us when we went to Ni-chome." There was more. "I hacked the police database. Evidence was just coming in, but there were mutilations on the bodies that are similar to..."
"To what was done to me." Pegasus's hand lifted to trace over the patch on his left eye. "I see." He hugged his lifeline tightly. "I... don't leave me alone tonight? Please Mokuba? Stay... the doctor said you could any time..."
"I know. And I already planned to stay. My bag is in the hall. I didn't want you to feel..."
"I know. Thank you. I don't feel pressured... I feel cherished." He smiled gently. "I don't remember you from before the attack, but I know that you make me feel safe and loved. I hope one day I'll remember you and the love we shared because I... I want to be whole and love you more than anything else."
"Whole or broken, memories or not, I'll always love you and be here for you," Mokuba promised with absolute sincerity. "I'll get my things and let the nurse know I'll be staying for a couple days."
"Days? Not just tonight?"
"I'll stay until you feel safe enough to walk in the gardens with me again." He smiled and stepped from the loosened embrace. "I'll be right back."
When he returned Pegasus was looking out the window again, his hand pressed against the glass as if to touch the world outside. Gently, Mokuba laid his hand over the larger one and rested his head on the familiar, broad shoulder. "It's okay now. I've got you and I'll never leave you behind again."
"Promise?" Came the pained, choked whisper.
"Promise." Mokuba repeated. It was enough. Silent and as content as they could be they stood together and watched the moonlight silver the gardens of the Evangeline Hospital for the Mentally Ill.
