smint45: Thank you. I’m glad you like the story a lot. I do, too. Lol
Relmara: Oh, I am going to have fun with Kaiba in this story and my other story. Oh, and hey I updated my Ronin Warriors story, too. Bonus: I posted TWO chapters there.AngelofBeauty88: My original thought was to have it be the Blue Eyes, but I don’tt like being too predictable. So I had to think of a reason to get Kaiba to the hospital. As for Joey’s father, who knows? Seto has perfect reason to hate Halloween. It brings no increase in sales for his business and it gets his brother hawked up on a sugar high.CHAPTER THREE
Over the next three days, Joey faded in and out of consciousness. He would mumble a few things and would listen to whoever wanted to talk him before drifting back to sleep. Yugi did his best to make sure Joey ate when he was awake.Joey watched as the nurse removed his IV and placed a gauze and bandage over the open spot in his skin. She removed the brace from his hand and watched him flex it by opening and closing his hand. She nodded with a smile to him.At that point, the doctor came into the room. Joey smiled weakly at him.“Hey, doc. How’s it hanging?” Joey asked. The nurse handed him a small pink basin with his clothes in it. Joey swung his legs around to the side of the bed while placing it beside him. The nurse left the room and partially closed the door behind her.The doctor was a middle-aged man with graying brown hair. He had light gray eyes that sparked when Joey spoke to him.“Things are hanging well now that my wife has started taking down the Halloween decorations.” Chuckle. “It’s good to see you, Joey.”Joey held out his uninjured hand to firmly shake the doctor’s hand.“It’s good to see you, too, Dr. Jack,” Joey said.Dr. Jack Connors had seen Joey in and out of the hospital many a times. Enough times for him to allow the youth to address him by his first name. Dr. Jack put his file down on the pull out tray.“I wish it was under better circumstances that we were seeing each other, Joey. Sharon was just telling me yesterday about your recent visit to her office,” Dr. Jack commented.Joey smiled. Dr. Sharon Connors had a combined doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology. She could work in any number of places – a child psychiatric facility, police department, government agency. And yet she chose to work as a Guidance Counselor at a public high school. That was another reason why Joey was allowed to call him Dr. Jack. Knowing two Dr. Connors’ was confusing enough for one man.“Yeah. Me and Dr. Sharon were talking about some choices for my future. Guess you told her I was here?”Dr. Jack nodded. Joey had given his consent quite a while ago that the two Dr. Connors’ could discuss matters about him with each other.“Yes. And I told her that you were leaving today. You’ve missed a few days of school since you were admitted Tuesday night. But she says that shouldn’t put you too far behind.”Joey nodded as he reached over for his jeans. He slowly and carefully slipped his jeans on. When he stood on unsteady feet, Dr. Jack placed his hands on his shoulders to help him. Joey finished pulling his jeans up, zipped up and put the button through his hole.Joey sat back down on the bed with his hand over his bandaged ribs. Joey tried to reach back to untie his hospital gown, but the dull throbbing through his ribs prevented him from doing so. With a permissible nod from Joey, Dr. Jack untied it for him. The gown pooled down into Joey’s lap which he politely folded up and placed on the hospital bed behind him.It saddened Dr. Jack to see the young man’s body bandaged, bruised, and cut up. Dr. Jack handed Joey a small packet of papers.“I’ll let you save that talk for my wife. For now, I’d like to talk to you about your injuries. The cuts on your body will need cleaning and the bruises will need time to heal on their own. Your wrist was almost sprained. You’ll need to use it to keep it from stiffening. But those shouldn’t need too much of your attention.”Joey nodded quietly. He knew what his injuries were. He could feel the dull pain vibrating in his body.“As you know, your ribs are bruised and you have some bad scarring on the upper part of your back. Your knee is bruised up. Your ribs and knee will require you to take it easy with walking. I’m going to send you with a wheelchair to help you get around until you get your strength back.”Joey sighed, but didn’t say anything. He continued to listen patiently to the doctor.“Your ribs need to be wrapped each day, but not too tightly. The scarring on your back will need to be washed very carefully and this special cream put on it. Daily basis, Joey,” Dr. Jack said, handing him the aforementioned tube.Joey took it and placed it in his backpack that sat next to the basin of clothes. It would be hard, but Joey knew he could manage.“What about my ear, doc?” Joey asked, bringing a hand up to the ear that had been bandaged.Dr. Jack told him that his ear had been smacked hard and repeatedly. Joey might experience some ringing or moments where his ear may go “quiet” on him. Dr. Jack recommended he get his hearing checked to see how badly his hearing had been damaged.Dr. Jack surprised him by reaching out to take his hand. Joey looked up slowly.“I’m sorry I couldn’t help you anymore than before. I didn’t know that you had listened to my suggestions and gone to the police. I’m sorry they didn’t believe you before. I’ve given them a record of all your injuries and I have agreed to testify against your father,” Dr. Jack told him.Joey thanked him quietly. Dr. Jack surprised him yet again by pulling the young man into a gentle yet firm hug. When he pulled back, Dr. Jack smiled at Joey.“Dr. Sharon and I agreed that when this is all over and your father is behind bars, we’d like to have you over for dinner,” Dr. Jack whispered to him.Joey smiled up at him.“I’d like that very much, sir,” Joey said, respectfully.Dr. Jack gave him a few more tips on how to take care of his injuries before leaving to check on other patients. With the door partially closed, Joey reached over for his shirt to pull it on. Mindful of his sore ribs, Joey pulled his shirt on over his head before trying to lift his arms through the shirt sleeves. He grunted and hissed through the pain while pulling the shirt all the way down. Joey whistled through his teeth as his ribs throbbed. He pulled out his socks and shoes to put them on, too. Thankfully, they were a lot easier to put on since he brought his knees up to his chest one at a time.Joey stood back up on his shaky feet. He turned and, with a hand on the bed, Joey walked a few steps. His legs felt a little rigid and his ribs were threatening to rip themselves out of his abdomen, but it wasn’t anything new. Joey turned around to walk back to his place on the bed.“It’s nice to see you up and about, Wheeler,” a voice said from the doorway.Leaning heavily on the bed, Joey turned around to see who it was.“Officer McCallahan? Hello, sir,” Joey said.He had forgotten about Yami’s message in one of his more coherent moments. Joey had told him if the officer wished to speak to him, that he could visit him. Officer McCallahan gave him a weak smile as he came further into the room.“Did you know my wife and my daughter go to the public library every Saturday? My little Jessica started going this summer when she heard about this new Story Time they were starting. She came back to the house after that first day, talking excitedly about the wonderful storyteller who told the story of “The Three Little Pigs.””Joey kept his gaze on the officer as he stopped only a few feet in front of him. He stayed quiet, but partially sat down on the bed with a hand on his bandaged ribs.“My wife took Jessica to the library yesterday morning. She came back very sad. My wife told me that the library had a stand-in storyteller for their usual person. Someone told them he was going to be unable to come for a few weeks, due to being hospitalized.”Officer McCallahan’s eyes flickered at him. His hand went for the phone attached at his waist. As he spoke, the officer dropped his gaze to his phone.“My daughter started working on a Get Well card for the storyteller. While she was working on it at the kitchen table, my wife pulled out her phone. She told me that, last weekend, Jessica had asked the storyteller if he would take a picture with her. He agreed and my wife took the photo with her phone. She showed me the picture and imagine my surprise at the familiar face I saw.”At this point, Officer McCallahan turned his phone to face Joey to reveal a photograph. In the photo, the little girl had long, light blonde hair with a thin, single braid on the right side of her face. She had little arms wrapped around the neck of the storyteller while he held up a book entitled, “The Rainbow Fish.” There were big grins on both their faces.Joey smiled as he reached out and took the phone. The officer gave it to him as he watched the former gang member look at the photograph.“She’s a nice kid, sir. I didn’t know she was your daughter until last weekend when Jess took her mom’s phone and showed me a picture of you in uniform,” Joey mumbled as he lifted his head and handed the phone back.Officer McCallahan opened the folder he was holding and took something out of it. He handed it to Joey without a word. Joey took the paper and flipped it over. His face broke out in what could possibly be the biggest grin the officer had ever seen on his face. There was lots of color and glitter spilled all over the paper. Spread out across the top, big letters written in blue paint spelled out the message: Get well sewn. There was an open (but unused) band-aid glued to the paper. It had big, brown googly eyes and a painted on smiley face. Hearts, flowers, and little smiley stickers were plastered all over the paper.“Jessica had a dentist appointment today. She asked me to find what hospital you were in so that I could give that to you for her. I promised I would.” Pause. “Wheeler.”Joey lifted his head to look up at the law enforcement officer. The man laid a hand on his shoulder and surprised him with a small smile of his own.“I’m sorry, Wheeler.”Joey frowned in confusion.“I’m sorry we didn’t believe you. None of us could see past the gang member. We couldn’t see the injuries for what they were. I’ll hope you forgive us,” Officer McCallahan apologized.Joey shook his head.“There’s nothing to forgive, sir. You were all just doing your jobs. My past as a gang member clouded your vision, but that’s okay. Nobody’s perfect, sir, and I don’t expect you to be.”Wheeler’s words shook him. This was a kid – no; young man – that was wise beyond his years. How could he have misjudged the blonde by so much? If it was the last thing he did, he would make it up to Joey for ignoring his civil duties as a law enforcement officer.“When you come back to the library, would you mind letting me know? I’d like to bring Jessica myself and see this great storyteller I’ve heard so much about,” Officer McCallahan said with a teasing smile.Joey smiled.“I’d like that, sir. I’ll try to be back soon.”Officer McCallahan chuckled while laying a light hand on Joey’s shoulder.“You take time to heal. We’re not going anywhere.”/……/
It was almost lunch time by the time the hospital staff was pushing through the paperwork to let Joey go. Officer McCallahan had informed him he would not have to do a line-up; Yami and Yugi had already done it. He would, however, need to tell an officer what happened tomorrow. Joey had reluctantly agreed to talk to an officer.
Joey had just settled into the wheelchair Dr. Connors was sending him out with when Mokuba came in the door. Joey’s face lit up when he saw the younger teen. He reached his arm up and the boy hugged him before stepping back.“Mokuba? Whatcha doing here, kid?” Joey asked.Mokuba’s grin, if possible, got even bigger.“Roland drove me here. You’re going home with us,” Mokuba announced.Joey’s voice got stuck in his throat. He figured his eyes must have gone as wide as Yugi’s.“Kid, I don’t think that’s such a good idea. Yer brother hates me. And I don’t wanna be somewhere where I’m not wanted,” Joey told him.Mokuba almost hadn’t heard Joey’s end of his statement. His voice had dropped down into a mumble. Mokuba shook his head with the same grin on his face.“But Joey, Seto said it was okay. You found his card. So you’re going to stay with us while you get better,” Mokuba explained.Mokuba’s words were like a stab to his heart. Joey had to fight to keep from showing how bad it stung. Kaiba was feeling obligated to take him in, because he had found the CEO’s lost card. At the same time, Joey came to the realization that there was no other place for him to go.I guess I got no choice, Joey thought.Joey gave nothing away by smiling to the young brunette.“Okay, kid. You mind grabbing my bag for me? Oh, and those prescriptions there,” Joey asked.Mokuba grabbed the backpack and handed it to Joey. Then he walked over to the bedside table. There were two orange bottles with white labels identifying Joey as the patient. One was for abdominal pain and another was for sleeping.“Joey? Are you in pain?” Mokuba asked, handing the bottles to him.Joey shook his head with a smile. He stuffed the bottles into his bag, right on top of the packet of papers Dr. Connors had given him. He zipped it up and laid it down flat across his lap. Joey put his hands on the wheelchair wheel handles so he could turn himself towards Mokuba.“I’m okay, kid. I’ve been through a lot worse,” Joey replied. He knew he had said the wrong thing when the younger man’s eyes got bigger. Joey just laughed it off as he steered himself to the door.“Mind if we blow this stand and go grab some grub? Hospital food can only keep you going for so long,” Joey said, disappearing out the door. That shook Mokuba out of his stupor. He bolted out the door after the wounded blonde. He was surprised by how well Joey steered the wheelchair. It was almost like…….He’s done this before, Mokuba thought. That thought made him feel really bad. He had been living the good life in his huge home with his big brother who loved him. And Joey had been suffering for over a year at the hands of his own father. It was enough to bring tears to his eyes. However, Mokuba blinked them away. He had a surprise for Joey and he didn’t want to ruin it with the sight of his tears. The two walked (rolled, in Joey’s instance) to the elevator. They got on the elevator and Mokuba pressed the three. As they rode the elevator in silence, Joey recalled the last few days. He remembered Kaiba questioning him about his card locket. He vaguely remembered the conversation. Everything had been a blur of reality and dream. He remembered breaking down and a rough hand running through his hair. Seeing as the only person it could have been was Kaiba, Joey chalked it up as a dream./……/
Joey sat in the doorway staring in surprise. Because of his need for using a wheelchair for at least a short time, the Kaiba’s had set him up in a bedroom on the ground floor. The room was past the stairs and down a hidden hallway in the back. Mokuba had explained, when bringing Joey in through the front door, that he (Mokuba) had designed the room for him.
Looking at the room now, Joey had no doubts that Mokuba had a great hand in its design. The bed was king sized and sat low to the ground on a bed frame with a large pull out drawer on either side of the bed. The sheet covers were dark gray and black with dark red pillows. There were enlarged pictures of the Flaming Swordsman and the Time WizardAcross the room from the bed was a long, lower to the ground dresser. Above it sat a large picture frame of a moving aquarium. Imagine his surprise when Mokuba showed him it was actually a television. Across from the door and past the bed was a nice glass-top desk, complete with a computer and desk chair. Next to the desk was a window that overlooked a beautiful flower garden.Above the bed was breath-taking image. It was a beautifully painted image of Joey’s favorite card, his Red Eyes Black Dragon. The painting was a dark image of a cliff side overlooking a village and a full moon partially hidden by clouds. Red Eyes was laying down on the cliff’s edge but had its head up and wings stretched out. Almost as if the dragon was anticipating something. There was a separate sliding wooden door that led into an equally impressive bathroom. One of the best features of this particular room was that the floor was wood and the bathroom tiles. It would make things easier for Joey to move about in his wheelchair.Mokuba was standing in the center of the room beaming with a gigantic smile. Joey smiled back at him.“Thanks, Mokie. It’s awesome,” Joey told him.“It’s your room, Joey. You can stay as long as you want,” Mokuba said, before turning to show him some more hidden features of the room. There it was again. That sharp stabbing, not to his ribs, but his heart. As long as he wants? In his dreams./……/
He just couldn’t understand what was happening to his life. Everything had been so good up until the point of him losing the picture of his family. Now he was housing a stray mutt in his house for an undetermined amount of time.
He had returned from the office a few minutes ago and had decided to check on Wheeler. Currently, Seto sat by the slumbering blonde’s bed in the desk chair he had pulled over. It unnerved him to feel the glowing eyes of Joey’s dragon piercing into his head. Why did his brother have to have a painter add a glow-in-the-dark chemical to the red eyes?He had found the pill bottles in the bathroom. Taking a look at the bottle had told Seto the blonde was going to be out until morning. The sleeping pill was very powerful; not even a herd of raging buffalo storming through the room would rouse the sleeping duelist.Getting tired of the uncomfortable desk chair, Seto kicked off his shoes and sat down on the bed beside Joey. It was logical. His house; his bed. He could sit anywhere he wanted. Even if it was beside a sleeping third rate duelist that caused his blood pressure to skyrocket. The blonde whimpered like a puppy in his sleep before fumbling to roll on his side. His whimpering got louder when he failed to roll over on his own. Rolling his eyes, Seto sat up and firmly grasped the blonde’s hip. He pulled Joey towards him until he was resting on his side. Joey sighed in relief when the pain on his back eased.“Stupid mutt. Don’t even know how to roll over,” Seto mumbled. With the blonde’s shirt off and his front facing Seto, the brunette couldn’t see the injuries to his back. Not that he wanted to. Nope. He was good. He had seen all the other injuries. He didn’t need to see one more.Seeing as the blonde was in a deeper than deep sleep, Seto took the time to look closely at the blonde. A thin bed sheet lay covering him from his navel down. This revealed the bandages wrapped around his ribs and the bruises on his upper arms.Seto stretched out his legs and settled himself down against one of the big pillows Joey wasn’t using. He turned on his side so he was lying just above the blonde. Propping his head up with one hand, Seto used the other to trace a light touch over the blonde’s skin. He touched the bruises and cuts, commemorating it all to memory.Joey wasn’t aware of it, but Seto knew an officer would be at the mansion tomorrow morning to speak with the injured duelist. Seto had every intention of hearing the blonde’s story, whether he liked it or not, and whether he was in the room or not. Seto had his ways.Seto broke out of his thoughts when he heard Joey whimpering again. This time, his face was scrunched up and his hands were closing and opening with the sheets in his grip. Joey was burying his head into his pillow while moaning in obvious pain.Seto did a cursory look over the blonde’s body. He didn’t appear to be leaning on any injuries. As the blonde started to toss and turn, Seto realized what was happening. The blonde was experiencing a nightmare. Seto knew from Mokuba having nightmares when he was younger that they would only get worse and Joey would only get louder. That and the sleeping pill would leave him unable to wake fully from his nightmares.Seto wasn’t even thinking when he wrapped an arm around Joey and pulled him to him. The blonde’s forehead rested against his chest as he continued to toss and turn. By now, Joey was mumbling.“P-please…dad, no. Don’t……don’t…” Joey’s right hand now had a tight grip on a piece of his shirt.Damn. Double damn. The boy was having a nightmare with his father playing the role of the villain. Remembering how he had calmed the blonde in the hospital, Seto resigned himself to repeat his actions. Shifting his body to lie on his back, Seto pulled Joey halfway on top of him with his blonde head lying on his chest. He wove a hand into Joey’s hair and shushed him as his other hand came down to rest on his uninjured lower back. He rocked the blonde gently while continuing to shush him.Joey shook his head as he tried desperately to curl his body. His body twisted around and with Kaiba’s prevented him from being able to.“Stop…p-please…let go. Let go!” Joey cried. He wouldn’t wish this on anyone, let alone Wheeler. He knew if the nightmare continued then Joey was likely to hurt himself. And God help him if Yugi found out the blonde had injured himself further under Seto’s watch. Yami was one thing, but a pissed Yugi…ooh, he wasn’t going to go through that again.Seto shifted Joey’s head so he could lean his head down by Joey’s good ear.“Wheeler, you listen here. Throw him out. Don’t let him win. Throw him out,” Seto hissed.Joey whimpered in response. He shook his head, burying his face into Seto’s chest. Seto grew irritated and gripped the back of his head tightly.“No! I’m sorry. Please…let go……let go. It hurts…” Joey mumbled.Seto brought his other hand up to thread both hands through the blonde’s hair. He pulled the blonde’s head in closer. He tried to keep from shaking the blonde.“Wheeler, you drive that monster the Hell out. You hear me? Use your dragon, if you must. But drive him out. It may be empty, but that head of yours belongs to you,” Seto growled.Joey seemed to settle down from Seto’s words. The gentle scratching and massaging of his head didn’t hurt, either. Seto laid Joey’s head back down on his chest. He heard the blonde mumble something. He leaned his head over as the blonde said it again.“Hmm. Blue Eyes. Good boy.”Seto snapped his head back and glared down at the blonde’s head. He pulled one hand away to flick the blonde angrily on the head.“Use your dragon,” Seto growled. “Not mine.”Joey whimpered, but finally settled down completely. His head went along with the rise and fall of Seto’s chest. He released a loud sighWith the blonde now calmed down, Seto could easily slip out of the bed and let him rest. Except he didn’t do that. Mokuba’s room was above Joey’s. If Joey experienced another nightmare with no one there to chase his demons away, the blonde could wake his little brother. So it was perfectly logical that Seto lay there with the blonde partially resting on him. Joey shivered. Seto took one hand out of Joey’s hair to reach down and pull the sheet further up to cover him. It wouldn’t do for the blonde to catch a cold.Seto continued running a hand through the golden tresses of his rival. This helped the boy to sleep and would prevent his brother from waking. Oh yeah. Perfectly logical.Seto knew better, but logic is what he kept telling himself. Keeping Wheeler calm would let his brother sleep and not have Yugi or Yami pissed at him for injuring himself more.END OF CHAPTER THREEWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
