Gi Oh…Mmkay?
Bakura
stood at the payphone with the receiver to his ear, looking through the metal
grating to the parking lot below.
Across the parking lot he could see the fenced in field where they would
be playing their game a few hours from now.
He followed the road with his eyes as far as he could, before it was
obscured by the side of the building, and smiled to himself; the road to
freedom. He was brought out of his
thoughts by the voice talking on the other end of the line.
“Bakura,
you freak, are you still there?”
“Yeah,
sorry, I zoned out for a minute. What
were you saying?”
“I was
asking if the time was still the same.
Fuck, Bakura, are you sure they’re not doing shock treatment in that
place?”
“I
wish!” He glanced casually down the
hall to make sure his call wasn’t being listened in on. “Yeah, one o’clock outside the back
entrance. If you park your car behind
the wall no one should see you.”
“Good. And what about your little boyfriend, is he
going to come through?”
“Don’t
worry about him. Stop giving me shit
and just be here, okay?”
“Okay,
okay…chill out freak. See you later.”
“Later.”
Bakura
couldn’t resist a smile as he hung up.
Today was the first day of a new life- one where he wasn’t alone. He knew how it sounded and would never admit
how he felt, but just thinking it was enough for him. He turned and walked down the hall, resisting the urge to look
into Ryou’s room. He just had to be
patient a little longer; they were almost there.
Ryou
watched Bakura walk by, impressed with his icy façade. Ryou wasn’t afraid of giving anything away;
he was as good an actor as anyone else here.
Even so, he was crawling out of his fucking skin and wouldn’t feel
better until it was over. He was making
a life altering decision and it wasn’t himself he was worried about. What if he failed Bakura? Bakura had high expectations of him and he
hoped he was able to live up to them.
Ryou sat in his room, pretending to read and trying not to stare at his
watch. He had already gotten everything
ready, which was light work seeing there was very little he could take with
him. He stashed all of his cash in his
shoe and had pocketed a few letters and pictures he couldn’t live without; the
rest he was going to have to leave behind.
It was kind of pathetic anyway, the kinds of things you acquire when
you’re locked up. He could live without
them, and the memories. Ryou was
dragged from his thought by a voice sounding in the hallway.
“Alright
boys! Line up at the elevator and make
sure you have everything, we’re not coming back up until staff win the game!”
Ryou’s
stomach was a mass of butterflies trying to escape. He smiled despite himself at such a thought; the butterflies
weren’t the only things trying to escape.
He took a deep breath, forced a neutral expression on his face, and
started down the hall. His ears were
tuned in, as always, to the conversations around him as they were herded
towards the elevator.
“Everybody
grab something to carry down, we’re not your slaves y’no!”
Ryou’s skin
crawled at their feeble joking. Those
bastards had no sense of humor and their attempt was just pathetic. He walked over to the stuff lying in the
hall and reached for a stack of rubber bases, just to have them snatched
away. He looked up in surprised and
found himself looking into Bakura’s hard eyes.
“You don’t
want to strain yourself, asshole.”
Bakura smirked, seeing a staff member out of the corner of his eye.
“Knock it
off, Bakura, you don’t want to ruin this for everyone.”
“Oh,
no! I might ruin this for a bunch of
limp dicks I could care less about.”
Staff came
closer and stepped between Bakura and Ryou. “I mean it, Bakura. Knock it off.”
“Okay,
okay.”
Bakura
raised his hands in mock surrender before scooping the bases up and heading for
the elevator. He was pleased with the
reaction this got. They had no clue
what he and Ryou had planned and it was just perfect. It killed him to ignore Ryou and he couldn’t wait until could
touch him again.
Soon.
The sky was
flawless and the air mild as they headed out into the daylight. They made their way towards the field, most
of the boys joking and laughing excitedly.
The turnout was quite impressive.
All but a few staff members were present and many of the resident’s
families turned out as well. Hopefully
it would be easier to get lost in the confusion of such a busy day. They passed through the metal gate,
monitored by two bored looking men, and walked out onto the field. They needed to play their game perfectly or
they were never going to make it.
It felt
like an eternity had passed before the game finally started. Bakura risked a casual glance towards Ryou
who was sitting in the grass reading a book.
He was pleased at how calm Ryou looked, reading and occasionally lifting
his head to watch the people on the field.
When the game was in full swing Bakura caught Ryou’s eye and nodded
slightly in his direction. It was time
to fly. He watched Ryou stand up,
taking time to brush the grass casually off his pants and mark his place in his
book, before laying the book on the ground and walking over to their chosen
victim. It took a lot of planning to
choose the weakest link; if they were going to make it, choosing the dumbest
staff was their best bet.
“Excuse
me? I need to go to the bathroom.”
“C’mon,
Ryou, can’t you wait? I don’t want to
miss this.”
“I
can’t. Please?”
“Alright.” He sighed before lifting his head and
looking around at the other boys watching the game. Ryou’s stomach flipped, worried that their plan would
backfire. Usually they liked to keep
trips upstairs to a minimum and would ask if anyone else needed to go up. If this dumbass neglected to do this, they
were sunk.
“Anyone
else need to use the bathroom? I only
want to go up once.”
Bakura bit
the inside of his cheek, hard, to keep from smiling. “Yeah. I have to go too.”
The staff
looked from Bakura to Ryou and back again.
“You guys aren’t going to start with each other on the way over, are
you? C’mon, you know the drill…you need
to contract for safety if I’m going to take you both up together.”
“No
problem.” Ryou hoped no one could see
the fierce pounding of his heart through his shirt. He couldn’t take much more
of this suspense.
“And you,
Bakura?”
“C’mon…I
won’t start anything. Can we just go?”
He fixed
Bakura with a harsh stare, warning him to keep in line and led them towards the
gate. “I’m taking these two up to use
the bathroom. We’ll be back.”
“Okay…do
you have your radio?”
“Yup, right
here.”
They headed
across the rest of the field towards the building. As soon as they reached the parking lot, and were a safe distance
from the baseball game, Bakura nudged Ryou.
Without hesitation they took off running as fast as they could towards
the back entrance.
“Shit!” The staff took off after them, fumbling with
the radio as he ran. “They just took
off! Heading towards the back gate,
call security!”
He sprinted
full tilt, lunging at Bakura who was mere inches behind Ryou, and snagged the
back of his shirt. Bakura lost his
balance and was down, quickly pounced upon by an extremely pissed off man.
“Ryou!”
Ryou turned
and acted without hesitation at the sound of Bakura’s voice. He ran back, ignoring the burning stitch in
his side, and kicked the bastard square in the face. He was rewarded by a crunch as his foot made contact, blood
squirting all over the leg of his pants.
Ryou was enraged! This useless
fuck was now trying to do his job?
Something snapped within him, and his fists flew. He struck the downed man with unbridled
ferocity, deaf to his pleading screams.
Ryou’s eyes were wild as Bakura grabbed him from behind and pulled him
away.
“C’mon
Ryou! Stop! If you fucking kill him they’ll never let us go. Come on!”
Bakura ran,
dragging Ryou behind him, towards the opening in the high stonewall. He could hear the voices of people closing
in on them and pushed them harder.
Bakura’s stomach dropped when they reached the back entrance and found
it empty. He urged Ryou faster, his
breath was burning in his lungs, his muscles screaming for oxygen, as he
propelled them into the street. An
oncoming car screeched to a halt, the driver screaming out the window.
“Will you
two get the fuck in?”
The two boys
made a final dash towards the car and threw themselves into the unoccupied back
seat. The driver gunned it before the
door was even shut and was out of sight before the first staff member had
reached the street. Bakura found enough
breath to laugh, pulling Ryou closer and slapping him on the back.
“We made
it! I told you we’d make it!”
The driver
looked at them in the rear view mirror grinning. “Is your little boyfriend okay? That’s a lot of blood.”
Bakura
chuckled, looking Ryou over. The smaller
boy had a large smear of blood across the front of his shirt and large flecks
splattered across his face and chest.
Bakura picked up Ryou’s hand and examined the swollen and bloodied
knuckles.
“Don’t
worry-this isn’t his blood.”
The driver
arced an eyebrow and nodded, impressed.
“I take it didn’t go smoothly?”
Bakura
shook his head in disgust, growling in frustration. “I got nabbed and the fucker had me on the ground. Luckily I had Ryou…that prick didn’t know
what hit him.”
Ryou met
the crimson eyes of the driver in the mirror and smiled weakly. “Thank you for picking us up. I hope it wasn’t too much trouble…”
The driver
was impressed by Ryou; not only was he tough, but actually had manners. What was he doing with Bakura? “No problem. I was afraid I’d missed you, actually. I was waiting as planned but had to move when security cruised
by, I didn’t want them to think I was suspicious. Christ! I almost hit you
guys when I was coming back.”
Bakura
laughed, slinging an arm around Ryou’s shoulder. “Good thing you didn’t, Ryou would have kicked your ass!”
The driver
looked at the pair in the rear view mirror, studying them intently. Ryou looked up, meeting his gaze. “By the way, seeing Bakura has no concept of
manners, I’ll introduce myself. I’m
Yami, nice to meet you Ryou.”
A/N: This still
seems a bit choppy and I sincerely apologize if it’s hard on the brain.
Now that they’re
out, what will they do?? *snicker*
Please tell me what you think, it’s really important to me
