A/N: *groans..* I am SO sorry you guys! The last weeks of school were killing me. I kid you not, I had 4 papers as well as a 5 page research paper due within a week’s time. I hardly found time to sleep let alone study and get the things written. At least class is over now! YES!! So I’ll be posting more often. I even have some more bunnies chomping at the back of my mind that can’t wait to be written.
And, this chapter is dedicated to Maggiemay since she’s been waiting on bated breath for my update. *chuckles*
-------------------------------------------------
When morning finally came, Yami and Yugi were both out cold from over exertion. There were still sounds of passion throughout the kennel continuing from last night, but the boys were too worn to try again.
The door to the kennel area opened as Joel came in to check on the animals and the thick scent of musk almost made his head reel back. Quickly, he covered his nose and mouth with his shirt.
"Holy shit.. We've got quite a mess in here, Larry. Looks like one of them went into heat again. Can you give me a hand to get this cleaned up?.. I'll go get the cage in the back ready."
Whenever one of the occupants would come into their heat cycle, which would rarely happen without one of the animal control officers noticing, that one would be separated for a few days until the urge calmed down. It was nothing painful, just a quarantine measure for the sake of the others in the kennel. The quarantine cage was kept in the back room where everyone feared to go.
Yami lifted his head, still feeling drowsy, and looked around inside their carrier. Last night flooded back to him and he looked down at his still sleeping little one with a soft purr. Lovingly, he began to groom Yugi's sleeping form until the kitten too awoke and gave a long yawn.
//.. Yami?...//
//My precious aibou... How are you feeling my little mate?//
Another soft yawn as Yugi's eyes slid closed and he relaxed under the elder's licking, //I'm still tired and I feel a little sore, but I'm okay.... Mmm.. My Yami...//
The gentle commotion of the cages starting to be cleaned roused them completely. They crawled back into their clothes before getting a drink of water out of their dish.
Larry came striding down the walkway, looking into the cells, then stopped over at Mai's. With a sigh and a soft shake of his head, he pulled out his keys to unlock the door and quickly retrieved a cat girl with short, scruffy black hair and piercing green eyes. Her orangish colored ears flattened back and tail whipped about wildly as she yowled and struggled.
"I know, little one.. I'm sorry, but I have to do this..." he replied with a wistful tone.
After locking the door once again, he slowly strode towards the back. A slight creak of a heavy door, then a soft echoing boom when it shut was enough to cause the kennel to become deathly silent. All heads turned towards the sound and a tense feeling hung softly in the air.
Yami and Yugi watched this curiously, growing uneasy with the strange actions.
//Yami?.. Why is everyone so quiet?....//
Valon turned his gaze back to address them in a somber tone, //That's the back room, mates... The point of no return..//
Now, being thoroughly scared, Yugi clung to the elder for comfort, //What's in the back room?//
//That's where they take you when your time is up... Then you go in for.... the "Big Sleep".....//
Crimson eyes widen in realization and he held his trembling mate even tighter to himself. He knew just what that meant and he would be damned if he were to let that happen to his aibou. His heart raced with panic.
//Please let go, Yami.. Ngh.. You're hurting me...//
Yami loosened his grip just enough to let Yugi be comfortable again, but did not let the kitten out of his embrace.
//What does that mean, Yami?.. What's he talking about? You're starting to scare me.//
Before he could reply, Valon interrupted with a simple gesture of slicing his finger across his neck that explained it all too clearly. Terror shone in large, amethyst eyes while the dark feline held his little one protectively.
//I will never let them hurt you, aibou. I'll protect you, I promise..//
Yami wasn't sure how he could do it though....
The cleaning continued, but all the while, Yami sat deep in his thoughts. Larry, who had finally returned from the back, started helping get the kennel cleaned up. When they were finishing the cage beside them, Yami was struck with a sudden idea.
//Aibou.. Listen to me. When I tell you to, run as fast as you can.//
With a confused look, Yugi nodded quickly and readied himself. Larry stepped in front of their cage and began unlocking their door. The second it swung open a crack, Yami grabbed the smaller's hand tight.
//Now, aibou!!//
They were off like a shot, darting in between the man's legs and dashing down the center walkway towards the front. Behind them, the officer gave a yell, but they had no intentions of stopping now. Joel poked his head out just in time to see the pair run by him and Larry giving chase.
Luck was on the cats' side since the door had been left open to listen for anyone that came in. Yugi scrambled to keep his footing as they ran and escaped outside, temporarily blinded by the sunlight. Yami diverted his course and began to run for large hill that was beside the building. With a small struggle, they both managed to climb it and disappear over its horizon, leaving the two gentlemen behind.
They didn't stop running until Yugi finally felt as if his lungs would burst and starting to drag. The elder pulled him into an alley where they collapsed beside a rusty trashcan. Finally, they rested and tried to catch their breath.
//.. We... We made it... aibou..//
Still out of breath, Yugi gave him a soft nuzzle to show he was happy at their new freedom.

Animal control could not find the escaped cats, much to the grief of Kenneth when he came in to take his boys home. After a small court battle, Kenneth won against the neighbor and Yami and Yugi were to be returned. They were even given a clean bill of health to verify that there was no medical reason for the attack.
They were living on the streets now, struggling to survive day to day. They had no knowledge on how to get by for themselves since they had both grown up being simple, spoiled housecats. Yami tried his best to take care of them both though. After all, Yugi was his mate now.
It was coming upon their third week out on the streets now. Both of their clothes were in tatters and their bodies dirty. They were growing thinner from hunger and had to fight to get a meal. If they were lucky, they would find some scraps in a dumpster.
But, no matter how bleak their existence seemed, they stayed by each other's side and Yami would defend his mate until his dying breath.
One night, while digging through the trash in search of something to eat, Yugi came upon a discarded chunk of meat. His feast was stolen away by a large male dog who swatted him aside. Of course, hunger was getting to the little one's rational thoughts and he began to fight back for his hard-earned morsel. The bigger stray, a male with long, shaggy, blond hair and tan fur kicked the kitten away with a smug snicker.
//You really think you're going to beat me, Bandit Keith, up? Nice try, runt...//
Weakly, Yugi tried to pull himself up as Yami ran over to his side and helped him to his feet. Yugi was scraped up some, but generally fine.
//Aibou! Are you hurt, little one?//
//I think I'm okay... But he took the food I found for us.. I tried to get it back, Yami, but he's too strong for me.//
Yami turned his gaze to the retreating cat and tucked his ears back tightly with a soft growl before he attacked. He tackled the canine and put up a beautiful fight while he went to defend his mate's rightful claim to the food.
Keith snarled when he was clawed and quickly turned around to fight off the dark cat. In a flurry of scrabbling limbs, biting, and scratching, Yami managed to claw Keith in the face. He sent deep scratches across the dog's cheek and eye, successfully distracting him through pain so Yami could finish.
A hard bite and another slash later, Yami was the victor and the dog ran off with his tail between his legs. He limped back over to Yugi, their food as his prize.
//Yami! You're hurt! You didn't have to fight him, I could have looked for some more food...//
//You're my mate, aibou and that means I will always protect you.. Now, eat up. You made quite a find.//
After a meager meal, the smaller helped lick Yami's battle wounds in loving appreciation. As bedtime came, they were fortunate enough to find an old cardboard box for shelter. They snuggled together to keep warm until they finally drifted off to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The boys awoke to a gloomy, overcast morning. Dark clouds loomed ominously overhead, rumbling in warning to an approaching downpour. The first thing to do, as always, was to begin scavenging for food. Wearily, they emerged and went on the hunt.
They never stayed in the same alley for long, as it usually tended to be someone else’s territory and they would be chased off once they were found out. The first spots they would go looking for food would be behind restaurants or hoping that someone would leave something for them out of pity.
A small cafe was the first place they ran into and watched the people eating bagels and danishes. They spotted one woman getting up to leave, only grabbing the cup from the table and leaving the half-eaten pastry on the plate. In seconds, Yami and Yugi were hopping up upon the table to snatch the food. They weren't fast enough to get away, however.
The owner came out shouting and clutching a broom tightly. The two scrambled to jump off the table and run away quickly to avoid being hit. As they ran off, the heavens opened with a might boom and rain began to pour down across the city of Domino. The cafe owner ran back to his restaurant for shelter, leaving two kitties to dash off getting drenched.
People on the sidewalk ran for cover from the downpour, creating a veritable maze of legs and shoes. A man dressed in a suit caught Yugi in the side with his polished shoes, sending the kitten tumbling end over end upon the pavement. Without even a second glance, the man hustled off and Yami hurried to pull his mate to safety.
The pair hurried to get off the sidewalk, narrowly avoiding being hit by a car when they ran into the street. The vehicle swerved, horn blaring as it whizzed by, and they rushed to get out of the way. After running across the busy road, Yami and Yugi entered the Domino City Park and found slight shelter under a park bench.
Yami held the smaller tightly to keep him as dry and as warm as he could. Yugi was sniffling softly, cradling his arm.
//My arm hurts, Yami...//
The elder looked at it, but each time Yami moved it, Yugi winced and mewled in pain. It didn't look like it was broken, but it was still causing his precious mate discomfort. He continued to shelter him with his body until the rain finally died down and the clouds slowly dispersed.
Once more, people were walking around. The kitties stayed huddled beneath the bench and began to shiver slightly. While they were crouched in their makeshift shelter, someone seated themselves upon their bench. There was a crinkling sound and a moment later, the scent of food hit their nostrils.
Driven by hunger, Yami and Yugi crawled out from hiding to sit at the young man's feet and gaze forlornly up at him. At first, he didn't notice them while he ate his fast food breakfast, but the pathetic mewing drew his attention immediately. Pausing in mid-bite, he looked at the poor creatures before him and felt his heart break.
"Ya poor little, guys.. Ya look like ya've been through hell..." He bent down and offered them the rest of his breakfast sandwich with a tenderhearted smile, "Eat up. Ya two look like yer starvin' ta death."
Instantly, the felines pounced on their meal. Yugi kept wincing as he hit his sore arm. A honey-colored gaze was upon them while the teen ran his fingers absently through his dirty blond hair. He let out a soft sigh.
"I can't just leave ya guys out here.." He spotted the scrapes just as Yugi let out a sneeze and sniffled lightly, "Ya look hurt an' sick... But, well...."
Yugi lapped the last crumbs away from the youth's fingers and gave a weak purr to thank him for filling his belly. Even Yami started nuzzling their savior's hand in appreciation. They were rewarded with a loving stroke upon their heads and a scratch behind the ears.
"Well, Seto can just kiss my ass. I'm takin' ya two home ta get looked at. He'll just have ta learn ta live with it!"
And with that, he removed his jacket. Carefully, he wrapped the cats up and cradled them to his chest while he headed back to his home at Seto Kaiba's mansion.
The young man smiled, "Ya guys can call me, 'Joey'."
A/N: I bet some of you were thinking I would make Joey into a dog boy. Well, I was sure tempted to, but he needed to be human this time for plot purposes.
Again, sorry to everyone that was waiting so patiently for my update ^^;
