A Christmas to Remember
Chapter 4
@-->-->----
Kaiba sighed as the telephone rang for the fourteenth time that morning. He eyed it warily, then sighed again as Mokuba's voice rang through the house. "Seto! Are you going to get that?" Instead of replying to his brother, Kaiba picked up the phone.
"Kaiba? Hi! It's Yugi! I was just calling to let you know that Yami and I will be happy to come to your Christmas party on Saturday. Thank you for inviting us. Did you want us to bring anything, like music or something, or help you decorate or..."
"No thank you, Yugi. I have everything under control." Kaiba smoothly interrupted the rambling teen. "All you need to bring is yourself... and Yami," he added as an afterthought. He didn't really think Yugi would leave Yami behind, but he wanted to make certain that Yugi knew the dark spirit was welcome. It hadn't been so long ago that he would not have been, after all.
Sometimes, Kaiba still couldn't believe that he and Yami more or less got along now.
His mind snapped out of his wandering thoughts as he realised that Yugi was speaking again. "Could you repeat that, Yugi? I seem to have some static on my line." Better to lie than admit to daydreaming.
"I said that we'll be there and asked if you were sure you don't want me to come early and help you get things ready? I don't mind, really!" Yugi's voice was so bright and bouncy, Kaiba winced.
"Thank you, Yugi, but it is not necessary. I promised Mokuba that he could help me with it. He is looking forward to it." Not only was it true, but it had the added advantage of being one of the few things he could have said to convince Yugi that he didn't need his help.
"Oh! Okay! I'm sure you'll both have a lot of fun, decorating together. I'll see you on Saturday, then. Bye, Kaiba."
As Kaiba ended the call on his end, he reflected that Yugi was the only person he had ever met who could smile warmly over a telephone. He had actually heard the smile in the spiky-haired boy's voice.
A few minutes later, just as Kaiba had once again immersed himself in the plans for the party, the telephone rang again. The brunette sighed deeply and picked it up. "Kaiba residence."
"Hey Kaiba! It's Joey. I was just callin' to let ya know I'll be at the party."
Kaiba tried to keep his voice even, despite the fact that his heart was racing from the sound of the blonde teen's voice. "I see. Thank you for letting me know, Wheeler. Is that all you wanted?" Even as the words left his mouth, he cursed himself.
"Er... no... I mean..." Perhaps it was just Kaiba's imagination, but he thought Joey sighed softly. "Yeah, that's all I wanted. See ya at the party, Kaiba." Joey hung up before Kaiba could say another word.
Kaiba slowly put the phone down, mentally calling himself every kind of idiot for the words he had said. It was always the same between them. Every time Joey spoke to him or approached him, Kaiba's heart started racing. He was so determined that Joey not learn of his... affliction... that he would then do everything possible to push the blonde away, if not physically, then verbally.
It had been that way since the first time they had met. Even though he wanted to stop it, by now it was such an ingrained habit that Kaiba was no longer sure he could.
Sighing heavily, the brunette returned to his task. He had to finalise the plans for the party before lunchtime, so he and Mokuba could discuss what they needed to do and make arrangements to do it that afternoon. Time was running out fast.
Kaiba had pushed himself and managed to finish all his work at Kaiba Corp. over the past few days, aided by the fact that the schools had been closed for four days due to the fierce snowstorm that had hit the city. Although he had freed up his work schedule for the next two weeks, what with school and all the obligatory Christmas parties and functions that he had been invited to during that time, it was going to be difficult for he and Mokuba to find enough time to prepare for their party. But Mokuba was so excited about it that Kaiba didn't have the heart to call it off. He was determined to get it all done.
If only he didn't have to constantly stop what he was doing and answer the phone, which had been ringing almost constantly all morning due to people RSVPing for the party.
The telephone rang again and Kaiba groaned out loud. "At this rate, I will never get this finished."

By the time the Kaiba brothers sat down to lunch, Kaiba was very irritated. He stabbed his fork viciously into his ham and cheese omelet and scowled down at it.
"Um... big brother... is something... wrong?"
Mokuba's tentative voice broke through Kaiba's distraction. He looked over at the worried boy and tried to smile a little in reassurance. Judging by the way Mokuba winced though, his attempt wasn't very successful.
"Sorry, Mokuba. I have a lot on my mind at the moment. I have been making plans for the party all morning. Or rather, that is what I have been trying to do." He frowned down at his plate again and cut off a portion of his lunch with quick, precise movements. "However, I keep getting interrupted."
Mokuba squirmed a little in his chair and bit his lip, looking very guilty. "Oh. Did you get any of it done at all?"
This time, Kaiba did manage a small smile at his younger brother. "It is finished. Come to my study after lunch and see what you think."
Mokuba smiled at him. "That's great, Seto!" He studied his big brother thoughtfully. "You're really getting into this preparation thing, aren't you? I mean... I didn't think you'd take it so seriously."
Kaiba's smile became a little less forced. "This from the one who always tells me that I take everything seriously."
"I don't mean that." Mokuba shook his head, frowning a little as he tried to put his thoughts into words. "I mean... it's like you're determined to make this party perfect or something."
Kaiba arched an eyebrow. "You would rather it was a disaster? Like Yugi's Christmas lunch last year."
Mokuba giggled as he remembered that particular event. "No, although that certainly was memorable, Seto. You can't deny that."
Kaiba's lips twitched as the memories came to him. "No, I cannot. I do not believe I will ever forget the look of shock on Yugi's face as the turkey erupted into flames or the way Yami tried to put it out."
Mokuba was now laughing. "Oh yes! Remember the look on Bakura's face when Yami threw his glass of water on the turkey, but missed and got most of it on Ryou instead?"
Kaiba snickered. "Yes. I also remember Bakura stalking Yami as he threatened to send his soul to the Shadow Realm, backing him up until he crashed into the Christmas tree."
"While he was doing that, Téa calmly got the fire extinguisher and put out the turkey." Mokuba grinned. "As well as the rest of the table."
"All of which is why I have made very careful plans. We are not having a repeat of that experience. Once was more than enough." Kaiba smiled wryly at his brother. "If Malik goes waving that rod of his around this time, there will be no lit candles around for him to knock over."
Mokuba snickered and nodded in agreement. "Good plan, Seto."
"We are also not having anything even remotely involving costumes." Kaiba shuddered.
"Costumes?" Mokuba looked confused for a minute, then he giggled. "Oh! I remember now! You're talking about the school play last year, right? Didn't something really weird happen?"
Kaiba nodded. "Joey's costume was stolen right before the dress rehearsal."
Mokuba stared at Kaiba. "Really?"
"Yes. But that was not all that was taken." Kaiba ate a bite of his omelet, deliberately drawing out the story.
"Seto! What happened?" Mokuba scowled at his brother as he bounced impatiently on the edge of his seat.
Kaiba relented. "Joey had arrived at rehearsal in a rather dirty state and the teacher had told him to take a shower before he got into his costume. But while Joey was in the gym showers, Tristan went into the locker room and stole Joey's costume, as a prank." He paused for another bite of his lunch and took his time chewing and swallowing it. "He also stole all of Joey's clothes."
Mokuba stared at his brother wide-eyed. Then a sly look came over his face. "So it's true what I heard then." This time it was his turn to tease his brother by eating a bite of lunch before continuing. "Someone told me Joey ran naked down the hall from the locker room to the gym and one of the teachers passed out from shock."
Kaiba shook his head. "No, that is not quite how it happened. He was naked but not... uncovered. Yugi went to the locker room when Joey did not return as quickly as he should have. By that time, Joey had worked himself up into a state and was unable to think clearly. Instead of doing the sensible thing and asking Yugi to fetch him some more clothes, he picked Yugi up and carried him like a shield down the hall and into the gym."
Mokuba giggled. "Poor Yugi. So did the teacher faint, at least?"
Arching his eyebrow, Kaiba eyed his little brother. "At least? Yes, Mokuba. Miss March, our English teacher, was in charge of the play and she certainly did faint."
"Poor Miss March. She couldn't stand the excitement, huh?" Mokuba giggled more.
Kaiba did his best not to grin too widely. "Not exactly. A group of us, including myself, were moving a piece of scenery from the storeroom to the gym, so we were in the hall. Getting it through the doorway was proving problematic, so Miss March was giving us directions. We saw Joey come out of the locker room and run down the hall towards us, naked and carrying a four-foot candycane."
"A four-foot... candycane?" Mokuba stared at his brother for a minute before he burst out laughing.
"Yes. Yugi was dressed in his costume at the time." Kaiba snickered at the memory. "He was a four foot tall candycane with tri-coloured hair and red sneakers."
"So is that what made the teacher faint? The sight of Joey carrying Yugi?" Mokuba was still laughing.
"No." Kaiba teased his brother by taking another bite of his lunch. "What caused Miss March to faint was the fact that Joey stopped right in front of her, told her about his stolen clothes and costume and then continued to carry Yugi down the hall to the gym. Right past us. Giving us all the opportunity to see that he really was naked. The sight proved to be too much for Miss March to take."
As Mokuba doubled over with laughter, Kaiba took a few deep breaths, trying to calm his body's instinctive reaction at the mental image that his words had conjured.
If there was one thing he had to admit to himself about Joey, it was the fact that the blonde had a truly exceptional backside.

The Kaiba brothers discussed the plans for their party through lunch, with Mokuba proving to have the same sharp mind for detail and facts as his older brother, at least when it came to discussing how best to arrange the decorations in the ballroom. They had moved into Kaiba's study and were still debating the merits of having one colour in each area of the ballroom as opposed to all the colours mixed throughout, when the telephone rang.
Kaiba sighed and scowled at it before picking it up. "Kaiba residence."
A soft, hesitant voice came over the line. "Um... Hello, Seto. I hope I am not disturbing you."
"Ah. Hello, Ryou. No, it is fine." Kaiba relaxed. There was something about the quiet, shy teen that always had a calming influence on him. "Are you calling about the party?"
"Yes. I was very happy to receive your invitation and I would gladly come, except... Um..." Kaiba heard Ryou take a deep breath. "Are you sure you wish Bakura to come as well? I know the invitation was for both of us but still I thought I should make sure that you were not just inviting him out of politeness and that you honestly do wish him to come. I know that he can often cause trouble and I promise that I will do my best to keep an eye on him and make sure that he does not do anything he should not." The words were spoken so softly that Kaiba had to strain to hear them.
"Yes, Ryou. I am fine with having Bakura here. I know that you will keep him out of trouble." Kaiba made his voice as reassuring as he could. It seemed to work because he heard Ryou sigh in relief.
"Oh, thank you, Seto. Then Bakura and I will be honoured to accept your kind invitation. Thank you. Is there anything I can do to help you prepare for it? I would be only too happy to help in any way."
Kaiba managed not to wince at the offer. He knew Ryou was only being his usual self, just like Yugi and Téa when they had both offered their assistance as well. But it still irritated him a little that they thought he needed help in preparing a simple Christmas party. What did they think he was going to do? Make it a formal business function? Decorate the whole room in white and declare a snow theme? Order a dozen reindeer and have them standing around the room so the slightest sound would result in a stampeding herd? He had organised larger functions than this. But still, they were only being kind.
"Thank you, Ryou, but Mokuba and I have everything under control. He is looking forward to helping me with the decorations."
"Oh, that is wonderful! Then Bakura and I will see you on... Bakura! No!" The cry rang in Kaiba's ear, causing him to wince and pull away from the earpiece. Ryou's voice could still faintly be heard. He seemed to be scolding Bakura. "You are not supposed to open that until Christmas! Put it down this minute!" Kaiba tentatively returned his ear to the phone, in time to hear Ryou sigh. "I am sorry, Seto. I did not mean to yell in your ear like that. Bakura has been trying to sneak open his presents whenever he believes me to be sufficiently distracted and he just made another attempt. Fortunately, he has not yet realised that I am keeping track of where he is at all times, so he cannot succeed."
Kaiba forced himself not to snicker at the thought of how frustrated Bakura had to be getting. "I see."
"As I was saying, Bakura and I will see you next Saturday night, Seto. Thank you again for inviting us."
As Kaiba said goodbye and hung up the phone, he made a slight amendment to an earlier thought. It was not just Yugi who could smile warmly over the telephone. Ryou had the skill too. Perhaps it was a 'light' thing.
He was still musing to himself about that when he remembered that Mokuba had been in the room with him. Looking around, he smiled wryly at the boy. "Sorry, Mokuba. That was Ryou. He and Bakura will be coming to the party. Ryou needed to make sure that Bakura was truly wanted."
Mokuba smiled and nodded. "Trust Ryou to think of something like that. He's always so self-conscious of how others see Bakura. But he shouldn't be. Bakura hasn't done anything really bad in ages."
Kaiba arched an eyebrow. "Which could mean that he is overdue to do something."
His brother shook his head quickly. "No, I think Bakura's given up on that taking-over-the-world stuff. He seems to like just being with Ryou now."
Kaiba considered that, then nodded slowly. "That is true." He was about to say more when the phone rang again.
After receiving Tristan's confirmation that he and Duke would be attending the party, and turning down yet another offer of assistance, Kaiba hung up the phone and groaned. "It is a very good thing that we did not invite many people. I do not know how many more times I can take being thanked for inviting someone. From their reactions, anyone would think it was the first Christmas party I have ever held." He scowled at the phone.
Mokuba bit his lip. "Um... Seto... I know it's not the first party you've held, but it is the first time you've invited Yugi, Yami and the others."
Kaiba frowned a little at that. "Even so, their reactions are extreme. If they were just RSVPing, I could understand it. But Yugi has called me three times so far today. Once to confirm his and Yami's attendance, again to check on whether it was casual, semi-formal or formal and a third time to ask me if I wanted him to stop Yami from taking his duel deck to the party."
Mokuba giggled at that. "What did you say to that?"
"That we would see them on Saturday." Kaiba turned his attention to the papers on his desk, pretending not to notice his little brother's heavy sigh. "I think we should put those dancing elves on a side table and make them a feature."
"Seto!"
Kaiba didn't need to look at his little brother. He could feel Mokuba glaring at him. "Yes?"
"I didn't mean *that* call. I meant the other call!"
"Oh. Sorry, Mokuba. I told him that it was to be semi-formal." Kaiba glanced at his brother just in time to duck to avoid the cushion the boy threw at him. "What was that for?" He affected a look of mock confusion.
"You know why. You're just doing this deliberately." Mokuba pouted at his big brother.
A small smile curved Kaiba's lips. "I told Yugi that if Yami took his duel deck then we would most likely end up dueling for most of the night, which would make you upset with me. He promised that Yami would not take it. From his tone of voice, I gathered that bodily harm might result if Yami tried."
Mokuba grinned and then giggled. "Poor Yami. He won't stand a chance."
Kaiba had to agree with his little brother's assessment.
Then he had to answer the phone again.
After reassuring Malik that yes, it was perfectly fine for him to bring a friend along to the party as well as Marik, Ishizu and Odion and no, he did not need to bring any whipped cream or chocolate sauce, Kaiba hung up and bowed his head. He stayed that way for over a minute before he reached for the phonebook.
Mokuba eyed his brother warily. "Who are you calling, Seto?"
"The travel agents." Kaiba's voice was calm. Too calm.
Mokuba gauged the distance between himself and the door, just in case he needed to run at some point. "Um... Why?"
"I am going to order six plane tickets. Tickets to somewhere very far away. The North Pole, perhaps. Yes, that would do nicely. They would simply think it was a Christmas gift. Hopefully they would not realise the tickets were one way until they arrived there." He started looking up the number he needed.
Mokuba stared at his brother. "Um... Seto... Why six tickets? Who are they for?"
Kaiba looked at his brother. He was completely serious. "The tickets are for Yugi, Ryou, Téa, Malik, Tristan and Joey. Because so far today, between them and Devlin, they have called me a total of fourteen times. If they continue to call me, I will be so busy talking to them that I will not have time to prepare for the party. I suspect that is their plan."
"Plan?" Mokuba began slowly edging towards the door.
"Yes. They keep offering to assist me. At this rate, if they keep distracting me, I will run out of time and have to accept their offers of assistance. I am sure that is their ultimate goal."
Mokuba paused and bit his lip, looking very worriedly at his possibly-slightly-less-than-sane brother. Apparently having to arrange Christmas parties didn't quite agree with him. "Um... Seto... Why just six tickets? You said Duke Devlin called you as well so why aren't you sending him away too?"
Kaiba shook his head. "Because Devlin and Tristan are seeing each other. I am not paying for Duke to go off on a holiday with his boyfriend. If he wants to go to the North Pole with Tristan, he can get his own ticket." He returned his attention to looking up the number for the travel agents he used.
"Then... if you're getting rid of them because they keep bothering you and interrupting you with stuff... I guess you'd better get seven tickets." Mokuba's soft voice caught Kaiba's attention immediately. He looked over at the boy, frowning.
"What are you talking about, Mokuba? Who is the seventh ticket for?"
Mokuba looked at his big brother, his wide eyes filled with tears. "For me. I'm sorry, Seto. I knew you were busy this morning but every time the phone rang, all I did was call out to you about it. I should have been answering it myself. I'm really sorry. I kept coming in to ask about stuff, too. I didn't know I was bothering you. I didn't mean to. I'm sorry."
"Mokuba..." Kaiba moved, hurrying to his brother and drawing him into a tight hug. "Oh Mokuba, no, I am the one who is sorry. You were not bothering me. Not at all! I never meant to imply that you were! I welcomed every break you gave me when you came in to ask me something. As for you answering the telephone, you could not have done so and I did not expect you to, not for a minute. You were doing something even more important than I was."
The raven-haired boy hugged his brother back and moved his head just enough to be able to speak without his voice being too muffled to be understood. "I was just wrapping our gifts to the others."
Kaiba gently rubbed Mokuba's back. "Exactly. I was just writing and thinking. All I had to do was put down my pen to answer the telephone. Sometimes not even that. But you would have had all sorts of problems if you had tried. You were the one trying to coordinate gifts, paper, tape, ribbon, gift tags and bows all at once, after all."
Mokuba smiled a little at that and looked up at his brother. "You really aren't upset with me?"
"No, Mokuba. I am really not upset with you." Kaiba smiled at the boy and gently tousled his hair. "But I will be upset if you do not help me sort out the plans for these decorations."
Mokuba smiled more brightly and nodded. "All right, big brother. I'll tell you where everything needs to go."
Kaiba hugged his little brother once more before releasing him. As he watched Mokuba go over to the desk and start working there, another plan crept into Kaiba's mind. A very special plan for a very special treat... for a very special little brother.
When he joined Mokuba at the desk, Kaiba was smiling.
