Chapter 3

Jou slowly lowered his hands, his eyes finally adjusted to the light. He glared at Kaiba. "So ya found me out. Congratulations. Ya want a medal for it or somethin'?"
Kaiba arched an eyebrow and tried not to smirk too widely, in case the blonde misinterpreted it for amusement. "No emphatic denials, Jounouchi? I'm surprised."
The other teen shrugged and looked away. "Like you'd believe me? No point in denyin' what ya seem to know for sure. 'Sides... ya caught me out." He closed his eyes briefly and then turned, locking his gaze with Kaiba's. "So... where are the cops? They waitin' for me to admit everything before they come and arrest me?" His bold gaze became an angry glare. "Or are ya goin' to take me in yourself, so ya can see me at my lowest?"
"I have not informed the police of anything... yet." Kaiba's voice was cool, without a trace of the curiosity that was plaguing him. There was something about the situation that was not as it should have been, but he couldn't quite work out what was bothering him about it. One thing was clear to him though. He was not prepared to simply hand Jounouchi over to the police until his curiosity was fully satisfied.
Of course, Jounouchi didn't need to know that.
The blonde teen frowned. "Wha'? So... if ya haven't called the cops... What are ya doin' here, Kaiba? Since when have ya lurked in dark alleys and what's with the look?" He ran his eyes over Kaiba's clothes. "Black boots, black pants, black shirt..." He shook his head and smirked. "I never figured ya for a cat burglar groupie."
Kaiba was startled into making a sound that, for any lessor being, would have been a snort. "Excuse me?"
Jou's brown eyes twinkled as he smirked. "Well, it's either that or... Hey yeah! Of course! Ya must be this Cat guy everyone in town's been talkin' about. Why else would ya be hangin' around a dark alley at this time of night, dressed like that?" His smirk widened and his posture shifted subtly. Apparently he had recovered from his initial fright and his usual self-confidence had returned in full.
A soft chuckle was Kaiba's only response for a second, then he shook his head. "Trying to threaten me, Jounouchi? Have you any idea just how foolish that is?"
Warm brown eyes stared steadily into cold blue eyes with no sign of shame or fear. "I know that, if it came down to it, my word against yours wouldn't mean very much. But I bet it would still be pretty embarrassin' for ya, if word about this got out."
Kaiba chuckled again, although it was purely for appearance's sake. Something about the other boy's eyes disturbed him and his amusement had faded at the sight of them. "Now blackmail. What will you try next, Jounouchi? Bribery, perhaps? Not that you have anything *I* would want..." He sneered dismissively at the blonde teen.
Something flashed through the brown eyes. It wasn't the expected anger though. It looked more like... pain. But Jou rallied before Kaiba could identify it for certain.
"Really?" The word came out as a husky purr as Jou slowly moved closer, stopping within two feet of Kaiba. The entire time, his gaze remained locked with the brunette's. Then he smiled, an odd 'cat that just had cream' sort of smirk, and leaned forward. "If that's true, then why have ya been lookin' at me lately like I was a hamburger and ya wanted some meat?"
For just an instant, Kaiba was caught off-guard by the unexpected question. In that instant... Jou moved. His fist struck out, aiming for Kaiba's stomach, but it never connected. Instead, Kaiba slipped to one side and grasped Jou's arm, using the blonde teen's own strength and momentum against him and propelling him away. There was a loud thud as he hit the alley wall, followed by a pained groan. Jou staggered back towards Kaiba, one hand holding his head and a look of pain on his face.
Kaiba glared at him. "Serves you right. Close that door again and then you're coming with me." He refused to admit to himself that his irritation was evenly divided between annoyance at himself for falling for the trick and annoyance at Jounouchi for doing it in the first place.
Jou glared back, although his soft groan and wince spoiled the effect. "Ya want it closed, do it yourself. I ain't takin' orders from *you*. And I ain't goin' anywhere with ya either!" He tried to move forward, but suddenly stopped, swaying dizzily. "Oh... man..." He blinked as if he was having trouble seeing, but then an odd look came into his eyes. He stared at Kaiba for a long time, his brown eyes filled with what looked like a mix of determination, despair and desperation. Then he moved.
For the second time that night, Kaiba was caught by surprise. He'd expected Jounouchi to fight him but, as the blonde suddenly turned and started running down the alley, he realised that he hadn't thought him to be foolish enough to try to escape. He sighed and spoke into the microphone clipped to the neck of his shirt. "Asako, a blonde boy in black clothes is about to run out of the alley. I want him stopped." Kaiba sighed and pulled the rear door of the Kazaku estate closed, then strolled along the alley.
He hadn't expected Jounouchi to try to escape. It didn't mean that he was unprepared for it. As he emerged from the alley though, Kaiba began to question himself on whether having Asako act as his chauffeur for the night had been as good an idea as he had thought.
He hurried towards the figure lying in a crumpled heap on the ground, the security guard bending over him checking his pulse. "What happened? I only wanted him stopped, not hurt."
Asako looked up, confusion on his face as he shook his head. "I didn't touch him, Mr Kaiba. He came out of the alley and saw me, then tried to make a run for it but... he tripped." He frowned down at the unconscious boy. "I didn't think he landed that hard. Perhaps he's faking it, sir."
Kaiba winced before he could stop himself. "No. He isn't. He injured himself in the alley. The fall would have been enough to complete the job." He sighed and shook his head. "Get him in the car."
As Asako complied, Kaiba grumbled to himself about stupid mutts who were more trouble than they were worth.
As he took his place in the back of the discrete black sedan they were using for the night, Kaiba eyed Jounouchi's still figure with contempt and made a mental note to tell the blonde just how clumsy he was at the first available opportunity. He also decided to tell him off for thinking he could escape so easily.
As they took the first corner, the movement of the car caused Jounouchi to slip in his seat. He made a pained sound as his head dropped forward into what would have been an uncomfortable position if he'd been unhurt. Kaiba growled and leaned over, releasing Jounouchi's seat belt and pulling the blonde teen, not ungently, until he was lying along the back seat with his long legs bent so he fitted and his head on Kaiba's thigh.
For the remainder of the trip home, Kaiba silently cursed himself for the curiosity that had driven him to go to the alleyway that night. He should have stayed home. He could have spent time with Mokuba, rather than wasting three hours in an alley, waiting for someone who was so stupid that he had tried to fight, and then tried to run, and had ended up hurting himself both times.
Kaiba also cursed himself for the impulse which had made him pull the blonde's head onto his lap and tried to ignore the silky feel of Jounouchi's hair as his hand stroked through the tousled strands entirely of its own accord.

A soft groan drew Kaiba's attention away from the book he was reading. He looked up and arched an eyebrow. "Finally awake, I see."
Jou had been sleepily blinking, but at Kaiba's voice his eyes snapped open and he turned his head quickly. Too quickly. "Ow!" He winced; his whole body tensing in reaction to the pain he was obviously experiencing.
Kaiba sighed and put his book away before moving from the chair beside the bed where Joey was lying. "Honestly, if it were not for the fact that I have checked and rechecked my information several times, I would be convinced that you were not The Cat. You hardly seem able to tie your own shoelaces without falling over, let alone commit a series of robberies that all required both a certain level of skill and physical agility. Here." Kaiba held out a glass of water and two small white tablets.
Jou glared at him. "I'm not *that* clumsy!"
He eyed the tablets warily. "No way I'm takin' anythin' from ya, Kaiba. Not without an explanation. Where am I? What happened? What are those things for?" Jou glared at Kaiba again. "I never figured ya for the kind of guy who'd dope someone up to have his way with 'em, but then I never thought I'd see ya lurkin' around in an alley either."
Kaiba scowled down at the blonde nuisance. "You are in my house, in one of the guest rooms, to be precise. You tripped as you were attempting to escape and the fall finished what your earlier contact with the alley wall had begun. In short, you knocked yourself out." His scowl deepened into a glare to rival Jou's. "As for these tablets... These are painkillers. For the headache that you are no doubt experiencing right now. The very thought of 'having my way' with you is enough to make me nauseous," he added quickly, in case Jounouchi had any lingering doubts.
For the second time that night, Kaiba thought he glimpsed a flash of pain in the other teen's brown eyes, but again it was gone before he could be sure. He was still wondering if he'd seen it when he realised that Jounouchi was trying to sit up. "What are you trying to do? Moving hurts, or hadn't you realised that yet?"
"Gotta sit up to take those tablets, don't I?" Jou's voice was strained with pain, but he managed to pull himself into a sitting position despite it. He held out his hands and Kaiba silently passed him the glass of water and dropped the two painkillers into his waiting hand. He took them and sighed softly as he leaned back against the head of the bed, his eyes closed as he waited for the tablets to kick in.
"Why are ya doin' this, Kaiba?"
Jounouchi's voice was so soft that Kaiba barely heard it. "Doing what?"
"Don't give me that. Ya know what I mean. Ya caught me. I don't know how, but ya caught me. But ya ain't turned me over to the police. Instead, ya brought me here and now..." Jou made a frustrated sound and opened his eyes, slowing turning his head to frown at Kaiba. "Why are ya bein' so... nice... to me?"
Kaiba arched an eyebrow. "I gave you two painkillers and you call that 'nice'?" He settled in his chair and sneered at Jounouchi. "I merely want to get a few answers to some questions, and I thought you would be more inclined to speak if doing so didn't bring you more pain."
Jou frowned. "Questions? What sort of questions?" A spark kindled deep within his eyes. "I thought ya knew all there was to know, Kaiba. That's what you're always tellin' us, anyway. What could I possibly tell ya? I'm just a 'stupid mutt'. Isn't that what ya keep callin' me? Now, you're sayin' ya need me to answer your questions? Ya want to know what ya can do with your questions? You can take 'em and shove 'em up your..."
"You will answer me or I will inform the police that you are The Cat."
Kaiba's cool statement drowned out the end of Jou's sentence, but he was too busy staring at the brunette to repeat it. "Let me get this straight. You're sayin', if I answer your questions, you *won't* tell the cops about me? Yeah, right! Nice try, Kaiba. As if!" Jou glared at the teen sitting calmly in the chair, Kaiba's cold sapphire eyes glinting above his smirking lips. "I bet you've already called 'em. Wha', they hopin' ya can get a confession out of me or somethin'?"
"I've already told you the reason why you're here." Kaiba's smirk faded into a frown as he leaned forward. "Here's the deal, Jounouchi. You answer my questions... *all* of my questions... and, if I am satisfied with the answers, I will let you go back to your life of crime. I have no interest in whether you are caught or not. All I care about is protecting what is mine, and I will make whatever deals are necessary to do so. If that means that I have to make a deal with *you*, so be it. Now... Do we have an agreement or not?"
Jou was silent for a minute, his brown eyes revealing his confusion and shock as he stared at Kaiba. Finally, he nodded. "Yeah. I guess so. But before you ask me anythin', I got a question too." He frowned. "How is all this any business of yours?"
Kaiba leaned forward, smirking. "It is really quite simple. You, The Cat, are a wanted criminal. There is a price on your head, substantial enough that you were brought to my attention. In other words, you are a bounty and I..." Kaiba paused, smirking into Jounouchi's wide brown eyes.
"I am a bounty hunter."
