When Yuugi
slid open the classroom door, he already knew he was early. In their panicked
rush not to be late, he and Atemu had stopped looking at the clock. The
classroom was only half-full.
Ryou sat at his desk against the window. He was engrossed in a book, and didn’t
notice the door opening. Yuugi breathed a soft sigh of relief, and glanced
back. Atemu was standing behind him, in the corridor. Dressed in his own
imagination’s version of Yuugi’s school uniform, he fitted in disturbingly
well. The two boys exchanged a look, before Yuugi slid the door open
completely.
Let’s talk to Ryou now, quickly. Before
Jou and the rest turn up.
‘If you think that is wisest, Aibou.’
“Hey… Ryou?” Yuugi’s voice came out soft; apparently not loud enough to cut
through the quiet hum of noise in the classroom. A few other students glanced
at him, and then looked away. Ryou didn’t hear him; he was too engrossed in his
book. Stepping into the room properly, Yuugi cleared his throat. Moving across
the room, he called one more time.
“Ryou! Hey, earth to Ryou!”
This worked. Looking up from his book, the quiet teen spotted Yuugi and smiled
gently. Thumbing down the corner of a page of his book, he closed it; setting
it on his desk.
“Ah, good morning, Yuugi.” He nodded his head a little in greeting, then
glanced at the clock set on the wall, “It’s unusual for you to be so early… is
something up?”
“Ah… kinda.” Yuugi fidgeted where he stood. Averting his eyes, he tapped the
toe of one foot against the floor. “Last night… something strange happened.
And, well…”
Ryou blinked at him. Tilting his head to one side, his big brown eyes gleamed a
little. Curious.
“Yuugi?”
“Ah, I think… it’s better to just show you…” Blushing a bit now, Yuugi turned
to look at the door. As if on cue, the door slid open gently. As Atemu stepped
into view, Yuugi heard Ryou gasp, quietly. When he looked back, the boy’s
already pale skin looked even whiter. He was holding two hands over his mouth,
and his eyes were wide. It was like he’d seen a ghost.
Feeling ridiculously self-conscious, Atemu crossed the room. Moving to just
behind Yuugi, he tried to find a way to smile at Ryou. Nothing seemed to work.
For a moment, the trio were silent. Then, Ryou’s voice came out in a soft
whisper.
“H-how…? How did you-…?” Ryou’s mind was racing. Seeing Atemu here was like
pulling a decoration out of one of his favourite dreams. The past. Slowly, he
lowered his hands back to the desk, but his eyes stayed wide. “You should be
dead. Dead with Yami-Bakura.”
Atemu fidgeted. Being put in the same category as the vile tomb-robber wasn’t a
comfortable thought. Seeing his discomfort, Yuugi intervened timidly.
“It’s… it’s
a really long story, but, Ya-… Atemu is back now.”
“But… but how?”
It was
Yuugi’s turn to shift, now. This is what he’d worried about. If Yuugi had found
a way to bring Atemu back, Ryou would certainly want to know a way to bring
Bakura back. And having a real, in-the-flesh Bakura in this world, would be a
bad thing. A very bad thing.
“It’s-…
I’ll be explaining it to the others when they get here. Just wait and you’ll
find out.” He would have to tell him. Yuugi couldn’t keep a secret from one of
his closest friends, much less a big, important secret like this. Seeing
confusion written on Ryou’s face, he hastily added; “It’s just a long story, I
don’t want to tell it twice.”
Ryou opened his mouth to answer, but the words never got out, because at that
moment, a yell cut across the classroom loud enough to make all three of them
spin around in stunned silence.
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!”
Jounouchi was standing in the doorway, wearing a stunned expression. Behind
him, Anzu was blinking and trying to see past his body, (unsuccessfully). She
didn’t have to wait long, however, as Jou pushed his way into the room and
strode across the room. As he got nearer, he reached out – and, to Yuugi’s
horror – grabbed Atemu roughly by the arm. Spinning the Pharaoh around
properly, the two stood face-to-face. Jou’s expression was shocked, and Atemu’s
was almost equally so, but for two different reasons.
There was a long, achingly awkward pause. All the other students in the room
were looking at them now, and Yuugi could feel the blush creeping up the back
of his neck. He was just trying to decide how to escape his situation – with
Atemu – and confront Jou later, when the blond duellist broke it for him.
Giving a soft bark of laughter, Jou jerked forward and slapped one hand down on
Atemu’s shoulder. Apparently, he didn’t have the courage to hug the other teen
in public, so settled with that.
“Well, I dunno what yer doin’ here, or how, but damn! It’s a face I never
thought I’d see again!”
Yuugi’s embarrassment just melted away. Even Atemu smiled. For a moment, the
group shared a warm, fuzzy happiness. The feeling of allies that hadn’t really
been present for months now. Yuugi was just turning, to see what Anzu thought
of this, when he caught sight of another person in the doorway.
Kaiba was
standing just outside the little circle of their group. His eyes were riveted
on Atemu with an expression of intense dislike. Then, slowly, as he noticed
Yuugi looking at him, he corrected his gaze to stare at the floor. Yuugi felt
slightly uncomfortable, looking at him. Kaiba had never expressed any wishes to
join their little group; even after the events of two months ago. However, he
was also never outright hostile to them. They mainly just ignored each other.
The look he had been giving Atemu was the first strong enough Yuugi had seen
from Kaiba in a long time.
Noticing where Yuugi was looking, Atemu turned. When his eyes met Kaiba, he
went still. Yuugi could feel a mixture of disappointment, loathing, and a
strange kind of hope. But, he was the only one that could’ve had a clue,
because Atemu’s face was blank.
“Kaiba.”
The CEO visibly flinched at the sound of his name. Looking up, he narrowed his
eyes at Atemu, but his expression stayed hard and unreadable. Instead of
replying verbally, he nodded. Turning away, he made his way to his desk without
a word.
“Aah… I guess somebody ain’t so glad yer back, Yami.”
Atemu looked at him. At his side, Yuugi reached out and wrapped his fingers
around his wrist. Glancing down, Yuugi gave him a small smile. The Pharaoh
smiled back, but only a little.
Jou was staring at the two, curiously. His eyes went from Yuugi’s hand, to
Atemu’s face, to Yuugi’s, and back to their hands. Somewhere in the back of his
mind, a suspicion was born. But, for now, he disregarded it. Instead, he turned
his attention to Yuugi.
“So Yuug, you gonna tell us how you got a miracle like this to happen?”
The smaller duellist looked up at his best friend. Then, slowly, he nodded, and
began his story.
“Well… if you remember, the girl that started in our class yesterday, Nenet…”
---
“Hah! I
guess I was wrong from the start, eh Yuug?”
Pleased he was finally done with his story, Yuugi just nodded. He had moved
back, to lean against Ryou’s desk while he talked. Atemu, Ryou and Jou had
watched him, rapt with attention, the whole time. Now that his story was over,
Jou was grinning, but the other two were looking thoughtful.
“… That could have been very dangerous, Yuugi.”
He blinked at Atemu. It had been a while since he’d been ‘Yuugi’, and not ‘Aibou’
or ‘little one’. It stung, a little. Trying to shake off the feeling, he gave
Atemu a half-smile. “Yeah, I guess… but it worked, didn’t it? It was all okay
in the end?”
Atemu gave him a dark look, not wanting to accept that answer. “And this girl,
Nenet… she worries me. If someone knew this amount about ancient magic, and
about the Millennium Items… then I’m not sure if we should be accepting help
from her so soon.” As he spoke, he turned away; studying the classroom.
Anything to stop having to look at the disappointment on his Aibou’s face.
Yuugi felt his heart sink. He’d hoped that Atemu would be happy to be back, not
chastising him for taking a risk.
I just wanted to have you back… I-… I’m
sorry…
Atemu looked back at him, and his expression was soft.
‘It’s all right, little one. What’s done
is done. I’m-… It’s good, to know that you missed me as much as I missed you.’
“But…”
Everyone turned, as Ryou’s soft voice cut across the silence. “… I thought… if
Nenet said that that spell was supposed to seal him back in the Puzzle, why is
he… well…” He raised one small hand, gesturing at Atemu’s very-physical form. “…
Like that?”
Atemu’s face creased in a frown. Raising one hand, he touched his fingers to
his forehead, and then shrugged. “It would take more energy to create a living vessel for a soul, rather than put
it into a magical artefact. I do not know how this has happened. If I was to be
brought back at all, I would think it would back into the Puzzle.” The Pharaoh
cast a dark look at the Puzzle, where it hung around Yuugi’s neck. He had not
enjoyed his time trapped in the cursed Puzzle. Hadn’t enjoyed it at all. If it
weren’t for Yuugi, back then, he probably would have gone mad.
Ryou went
silent again. Jou was rubbing the back of his head, looking confused. Yuugi
didn’t seem surprised; complex things could confuse Jou, and this wasn’t very
simple. The small duellist shrugged a bit, pushing himself away from Ryou’s
desk, with a glance at the clock. Four minutes until class started and they
would be required to be quiet. Unconsciously, he glanced around the room.
“… Where is Nenet, anyway? I wanted
to introduce her to Yami…”
Atemu and Jou both looked up, scanning the room. And, it was true. Nenet was
no-where to be seen. Yuugi frowned a bit harder, and then gave a small shrug. “…
I guess she was tired. She seemed really exhausted after last night.”
Jou gave a short nod, and then his face contorted to annoyance as the door slid
open. The teacher was already talking before she walked in, telling them all to
sit down and settle down. Breaking away from the group, Jou headed for his
chair. Atemu followed; meaning to talk to the teacher and explain the patented
story of him being Yuugi’s visiting cousin. Yuugi was just turning to walk to
his own seat, when he felt a tug on his sleeve.
Looking down, Ryou was frowning at him, very slightly. “… You said that the
girl had a house in town?”
Yuugi blinked, the nodded. “Mm. Down in the shopping district. Real run down
place, looks like no-one’s lived there for years… some family name I didn’t
recognise on the sign. Oguri, or something. Maybe it was Oturi…” Yuugi paused
for a moment, then shrugged, flashing Ryou a careless smile. “Either way, I guess
we’ll get to see her later, or tomorrow. I really want to thank her!”
Ryou offered a faint smile, before letting go of Yuugi’s sleeve. Thoughts swam
in his mind, and he reached down. His pale fingers pressed against the fabric
of his shirt; pressing down just enough to feel the hard metal of the
Millennium Ring against his chest. His face creased into a frown, before he
straightened up; turning his attention to the teacher.
---
“Aaaah! I
didn’t understand any of that!” Jou gave a low, annoyed noise, as the trio left
classes at the end of that day. The sun was just setting behind the school as
they walked for the gates. The last class of the day had been Math, and Jou’s
weak point. Yuugi, as expected, had sailed through. Atemu had a natural gift
for numbers, and making sense of things, and although Yuugi had protested at
first, he’d eventually started taking all of Atemu’s mental hints and nudges.
The class had been a breeze.
Yuugi gave
a faint smile, laughing just a bit, “Don’t worry, Jou, it wasn’t that bad.”
“Wasn’t that bad?!” Jou looked at him like he was crazy, then gave a soft sigh,
“Yeah, you can say dat, you got Yami helpin’ ya. And I bet Ryou breezed through
it all, too. He’s such a nerd, it’s creepy.”
“… Where is Ryou, anyway?” Yuugi’s voice came out surprised. They usually all
walked together out of school, before going their different directions to go
home. But, today, Ryou had been no-where in sight when they left the classroom.
Assuming he’d gone on ahead, they’d left without him, but the familiar white
hair was no-where to be seen in the crowd.
Atemu and Jou, being taller, stopped to look around. Shaking their heads, they
couldn’t see him either. As Yuugi frowned, a suddenly thread of panic shot
through his mind. He looked up at Atemu, expectantly, as the other started to
talk.
“… Yuugi. What did Ryou ask you today, when me and Jounouchi had left?”
He blinked. “Ask…? Uhm… not much, just asking about Nenet, and where we’d gone.
Why? Is it important?”
Atemu’s eyes went wide. Jou looked from one to the other, then the cogs began
to turn. Before he could say it, Atemu overrode him.
“You realise, if Thief King Bakura were to be brought back, it would be very
bad.”
Yuugi blinked, once, then his eyes went wide as he started to understand.
Slowly, quietly, he replied, “… And, if it’s anything like us, Ryou will want
his Yami back, very badly…”
The three
boys stared at each other, horror written across their faces. Atemu’s voice
came quiet; “Little one, do you remember how to get to this girl’s house.”
Yuugi nodded, and Jou’s voice cut across him, unexpectedly loud. “Then, what’re
we waitin’ for? C’mon, we gotta go!”
---
“H-hello…?
Is… anyone here?”
Ryou pushed his way through the door, into the big, empty mansion. It could
only be the one Yuugi had described. Clinging to the memories of the brief
description Yuugi had given of the room, he moved to the left of the door;
fumbling his hands across the wall. He almost tripped over things on the floor
at least twice, before the light switch was under his hands. Flicking it, he
turned to look around the room and took in a deep breath.
This could only be the house Yuugi had described. The Millennium Items were sketched
over the walls, exactly like he’d said. There was a difference, though. Near
the door, on the only spare piece of wall, there was a rough, freshly-hewn
carving of the Millennium Puzzle. As he looked around, Ryou felt a chill down
his spine. Glancing down, he drew comfort from the Millennium Ring, where it
rested against his chest. Spotting the only door in the room, he made towards
it.
Pushing
open the door, Ryou peeked into the room, timidly. “H-hello? Nenet…?”
“What are you doing here, child!?”
Ryou
visibly winced as the loud, harsh voice spoke up. Nenet was half-sitting,
half-laying on the steps leading up to what seemed to be an Egyptian altar.
Ryou felt his stomach dip slightly as he noticed it was covered with blood.
The girl,
who had to be Nenet, was dressed in the girl’s uniform for Domino High school. Her face was starkly Egyptian, and
that sold it for Ryou. She was glaring at him, as he stepped into the room.
When he spoke, his voice was soft, and he stuttered over his words, in his
nervousness.
“I-… it’s…
I have the Millennium Ring, but-… Yuugi said-… I mean…” He swallowed, looking
down at the floor. “… Can you bring Bakura back?”
Watching him, Nenet’s face turned from distaste, to curiosity, to eagerness.
Her eyes gleamed as she finally noticed the Ring around his neck. Stepping
across the room, her voice softened; becoming more inviting, to the point where
Ryou even looked up at her.
“Another Item without a spirit? My, you
Japanese do know how to break these beautiful things… but, tell me…” Her
eyes narrowed, “… What of the boy with
the Puzzle? Did the spirit of the Puzzle go back into it, or was my ritual
incorrect?”
Ryou
swallowed. He could feel his hands getting sweaty, but he fought not to let it
into his face as he lied; “The… the ritual was c-correct. Atemu is b-back in
the Puzzle…”
Nenet’s expression changed, as shock threaded across her face, “… Atemu? The spirit of the Puzzle is the
Pharaoh Atemu? This is getting interesting…”
She paused, looking down at Ryou. The white-haired boy was shaking,
visibly, but she didn’t connect it to a lie. He had plenty of reason to be
nervous, if he had heard Yuugi’s tale. As her eyes flicked down to the Ring,
she smirked a little.
“… I will bring back the spirit of your
Ring. On one condition.”
Ryou looked up, expectantly.
“Once the spirit has returned, you must
promise to bring Yuugi back here, with his Puzzle.”
Ryou blinked, once. Then, slowly, he nodded. The second he did, Nenet’s arm
flashed out, and grabbed his wrist. From her waist, she drew the same long
knife of the previous night. It had been cleaned, and oiled, and reflected the
light brilliantly. Dragging Ryou up the short steps, she held his arm over the
altar.
“Put your Ring on the altar.” He
complied without a word. This was exactly what Yuugi had said happened. It was
all working the same way. He was going to get Bakura back.
The first slash opened the somewhat tight sleeve of his school uniform. As she
began chanting, and her arm came down for the second slash, Ryou tensed and
closed his eyes.
---
“RYOU!
RYOOUUU!” Yuugi was yelling as they burst into the front door of the house. The
door was already open, and the light was already on. Yuugi felt his pulse race.
He could see the door to the altar room, and they were just making towards it,
when a scream cut across the sound. Ryou’s scream.
Yuugi felt his heartbeat quicken. Jou and Atemu looked confused, but Yuugi
yelled back to them as they ran across the room; ignoring the drawings, and the
fresh image of the Millennium Puzzle. They didn’t even notice the carving of
the Millennium Ring, which was slowly etching itself out on the other side of
the door.
“We’re too late! They started the spell!”
As the trio reached the door, the screams cut off abruptly. Yuugi was shaking.
Reaching out, his hand wrapped around the door handle, pulling it open.
The altar room was familiar, as his eyes took in the scene. Nenet was sagging
against a pillar, looking across the room with shock and anger written clearly
on her face. Ryou was slumped over the altar, cradling his arm, which was
bleeding as freely as Yuugi’s had. The centrepiece, however, was a figure
standing in the middle of the room.
“… No… no,
it’s…”
To his right, Atemu’s voice came out in a growl. “… Thief King Bakura.”
To his
left, Yuugi heard Jou curse.
They were
too late.
(Author’s Notes: This is getting rather
fun~ And, as a pre-warning, I do not support soft, fluffy Bakuras. This Bakura
will be written as the villain he’s meant to be.)
