smint45: Lol I was thinking Kaiba would have a hard time adjusting to Joey being more involved in his life. So naturally he’ll deny doing anything to help Joey.
BlackRosePirate: The morning after. Ha Ha You’ll see.Relmara: Yes. He needs a lot of loving and over the course of this story, he may just get it. Lol And yes, there’s that lovely Kaiba jogic. If he did have a small ego boost, he certainly wasn’t going to admit to it.CHAPTER FOURWhat a horrific night. Seto would drift off to sleep for a few minutes, but then the blonde would shift and he would be awake in a flash. So he ended up getting next to no sleep. He gave up on sleeping when the bedside clock read 05:00 A.M.Somehow, in his restless state, Seto had kept his hand running through the blonde’s soft hair. Also, sometime around two-thirty, Joey rolled over so he was completely lying on top of Seto. Joey had his head resting just below Seto’s chest. It made it easier for Seto to comb his fingers through Joey’s hair.Seto shot the duelist an annoyed look. He didn’t care to have his sleep disturbed by the blonde mutt. At this rate, he should have just taken the chance of Joey waking Mokuba. Seto glanced at the clock again and made a small growl sound in the back of his throat.05:05:32 A.M. Okay. That was enough of this. He obviously wasn’t getting any sleep tonight. Besides, some piece of Joey was pressing down on his bladder.Carefully, Seto maneuvered his lower body off the bed without disturbing Joey. It took even more careful movements to pull himself entirely free of the blonde. When Seto stood back up from the bed, Joey was resting on a pillow on his stomach.Seto held back a wince as his bladder reminded him of its urgent need. Rather than wait until he got upstairs to his own room, Seto disappeared into Joey’s bathroom. A few minutes later, he left the bathroom, feeling immensely better. He turned to exit the room when he heard a pained whimper. What did I do to deserve this? Seto rolled his eyes skyward before turning to look at the sleeping duelist. Somehow, Joey had rolled over onto his back and it was clearly very painful for him. Seto came to a realization that Joey’s pain pill had probably worn off, which meant lying on his back was even more painful than before.Seto strolled back around the side of the bed to Joey’s side. He picked up the pillow and dropped it on the ground. Seto would have normally grabbed the sheets and flipped the blonde over that way. Except the jerky movements would likely do further harm.Instead, Seto sat down on the bed beside Joey. He leaned down and pulled Joey’s arms up around his neck. Seto pulled Joey partially up into his arms before smoothly flipping him to his stomach and laying him back down. Joey fussed minimally with the movements, but quickly settled down on the pillow Seto set him down on.With Joey now secure, Seto patted him gently on the head like an owner petting its dog. Seto thought of looking at the injuries on Joey’s back, but there was very little light in the room. His conscious now clear, Seto pushed himself off the bed and left the room. He quietly closed the door behind him.Seto walked down the hallway and was met by Roland in the main hall. The man had a knowing look on his face, but chose wisely not to say anything. Seto motioned for him to follow him. They walked up the stairs to the next floor as Seto spoke.“An officer has a ten o’clock appointment with Wheeler. Make sure he’s up well before then. Have the cook prepare some breakfast for him. Nothing too heavy until his ribs heal. When the officer arrives, show him and Wheeler to the downstairs study,” Seto commanded.Roland nodded, silently. Seto turned them to the left to go down the hall.“Mokuba should be up and dressed by seven. He has a dental appointment at nine. Make sure he’s brushed his teeth before he leaves the house. After his appointment, Mokuba will be beta testing at Kaiba Corp. I want him back here for dinner before he goes over to Reagan’s house for the sleepover,” Seto continued.Seto came to a stop outside his bedroom door. He turned to face Roland with a hand on his doorknob.“Should I turn off the security cameras in the study?” Roland asked with a hinting air in his voice.“No. Keep the cameras rolling. Record the interview and copy it to a CD,” Seto told him.Roland waited. Seto’s hand was on the doorknob but he seemed to be thinking about something. After a minute, he seemed to come to a decision.“Call the office and inform them I’m not coming in today. I don’t want to be disturbed,” Seto ordered.Roland raised an eyebrow in question.“And if they ask why?”Seto narrowed his gaze.“Inform them it’s none of their business and if I find out who it was that asked, they’ll be fired,” Seto warned, before opening the door and disappearing inside his sanctuary.Seto locked his door. Mokuba had learned long ago that when his bedroom door was locked, it was not wise to disturb his big brother. If Roland needed him, there was a hidden eye scanner that would allow him access to the room. Of course, Roland was under strict orders to come in only under emergency. So the house better be on fire or Mokuba involved in a car accident.Seto disappeared into his closet. He pulled off all his clothes and shoved them in his laundry basket. He pulled on a pair of boxers and slid a pair of navy blue sleep pants over his legs. After that, Seto walked into his bathroom. He brushed his teeth and washed his face before walking out with the snap of his fingers. The lights in the bathroom went out at the sound of the snap.“Close blinds. Light music at low volume.”As Seto walked to his bed and pulled back the covers, the windows blinds closed by themselves. Some light piano music started playing from somewhere in the room. Seto climbed into bed and pulled the sheet up to his waist while leaving the comforter entirely off. Seto plugged his cell phone into the charger and set the alarm so he wouldn’t sleep too long. With that now done, Seto rolled away to lie on his stomach. He laid his head down but lifted it when he picked up a strange scent. He sniffed the air and then his hand. He shook his head and rolled his eyes before unceremoniously flopping back down on the bed.Where the Hell did he pick up the scent of peaches and cream?!/……/
It was a little later, around seven, when Joey woke up. He groaned, as consciousness brought a keen awareness to the pain shooting through his upper back and his ribs. Joey winced. He rolled carefully to his side before sitting himself up.
He rubbed at his face while letting out a gigantic yawn. He glanced around for his wheelchair and found it sitting by the bathroom side of the bed. Joey gritted his teeth as he slid himself across the bed. He threw back the sheets and made sure the wheelchair wheels were locked before lifting himself into the chair.Once he was settled, Joey unlocked the wheels and rolled himself into the bathroom. He didn’t bother closing the bathroom door; if someone came in, they would be able to hear him. Joey immediately snatched up the pain pill bottle and the half-empty bottle of blue Gatorade next to it.Joey screwed the top open and popped a pill in his mouth. He swallowed some Gatorade to wash it all the way down. Joey shook his head with a gag while twisting the top back on the bottle.“Gods. Why does Connors gotta give me the meds that taste like crap?” Joey grumbled. He put the Gatorade back on the bathroom counter before wheeling over to the toilet. He pulled the toilet lid down and locked his wheels before hauling himself onto the toilet. Joey pulled a small bag up from down beside the toilet where he had placed it last night. He pulled out a small pair of medical scissors and cut away at the bandages wrapped around his ribs.Joey mumbled a long string of curses as he turned and shoved the old bandages into the wastebasket. Joey then reached over and started the water in the bathtub. He was debating on taking a shower or bath. He wasn’t sure how long he would be able to stand through the pain. While he thought about it, he slipped his pants and boxers down. They pooled on the tile floor before Joey bent down to pick them up. Once sitting up, he threw them into a corner. Joey reached over and turned on the shower. He pushed himself up to his feet and climbed into the bathtub/shower.For a minute, Joey just stood there letting the cool water run over his body. He had kept it cool so as not to aggravate the marks on his back. Joey reached down for his bath soap. He lifted it up, popped it open and took a sniff. He smiled.“Gotta love peaches and cream,” Joey murmured. He poured some into his hand before placing the bottle down. He rubbed the soap together in his hands before running them over his body. He was careful not to move around too much until the pain medication kicked in. Thankfully, in a shower, a person didn’t walk around much.It took a little longer to wash his hair. By the time he was finished, the pain medication had kicked in and it wasn’t too bad standing and walking. Despite the medication working, Joey found that he couldn’t put the cream on the sores on his back. He threw the tube down.I’ll be fine without it, Joey thought.Joey turned off the shower and carefully climbed out. He dried off and, using the wall as a support, went into the attached closet.Another great thing Mokuba had showed him was an assortment of new clothes. Yugi and he had gone out shopping together to get clothes for Joey. The blonde wasn’t too fussy about what he was wearing today. Then again it didn’t really matter as none of the clothes looked trashy. He decided on wearing a pair of black cargo pants with a dark gray belt and a forest green button-up. He only partially buttoned up the shirt, preferring to leave the upper buttons undone. Once dressed, he sat back on his wheelchair to pull on socks and his old sneakers. When he wheeled himself out of the bathroom, Joey found the bedside clock to check the time. It was 8:37. Joey grimaced. It wouldn’t normally have taken him so long, but his injuries slowed him down quite a bit.Joey reached down into his backpack beside the bed. He dug through it, moving stuff around and grunting in mild irritation. Finally, he made an Ah-ha sound and pulled out what he had been searching for. He pulled out a pair of dark gray fingerless gloves. He kept them handy for whenever he had to use a wheelchair.Joey pulled them on before gripping the wheelchair wheel handles. The gloves made it easier for him to handle gripping the handles of the wheelchair for long periods of time. He pushed himself out his door, closed the door behind him, and wheeled down the hall. As he turned the corner, Joey nearly ran into Roland.“Oh! My bad,” Joey said, just veering off course to avoid a collision.“My apologies, Mr. Wheeler. I was coming to wake you,” Roland told him.Joey waved the apology off.“It’s okay. And you don’t need to call me ‘Mr. Wheeler.’ Just call me Joey,” Joey said with a small smile.Roland nodded his head. “Only in private, Joey. One does need to keep up appearances.”Joey sighed, but nodded in agreement.“What should I call you? I mean I know your name and all, but it ain’t exactly polite to call ya by yer first name when I don’t got yer permission,” Joey said.Roland patted Joey on the shoulder, mindful of the blonde’s injuries.“You have my permission to call me by my name, Joey,” Roland told him.Joey’s face lit up.“Really? Cool beans, man. So why were you coming to wake me up?” Joey asked.Roland informed Joey of the appointment with the police later that morning and Kaiba’s command that Joey eat some breakfast before they arrived. Joey rolled his eye. Like Kaiba had to command him to eat.“Okay, cool. Can you show me where the kitchen’s at?” Joey asked.Roland held out his arm and proceeded to show Joey the way. Roland could tell by the way Joey operated the wheelchair that the youth didn’t need nor want any assistance. When they arrived in the small dining room, Roland pulled out a chair so Joey could pull right up to the table. At the same moment, the cook came out.The cook was a large, burly man with bright red hair. He looked like the type that would slap your back in greeting and send you flying across the room on accident. Thankfully, the man held out a hand for Joey to shake. Joey wasn’t surprised by how firm the man’s handshake was.“You must be our new guest Joey. Mokuba talked non-stop about you earlier. I’m Chef Michaels. But you can call me Gabriel,” the chef told him.Joey grinned.“Can I call you Gabe?” he asked. The chef raised his eyebrows in surprise. Then he let out a big booming laughter. When he was done, he clapped Joey gently on the shoulder.“I like you, kid. Sure! You can call me Gabe. Now, I know you’re going to need to eat some light foods until those ribs are better. But, I need to ask you if there any particular likes or dislikes or any allergies,” Chef Michaels told him.Joey smiled.“I like a little bit of everything, but I’m always willing to try something new. Umm, I’m not big on Brussel sprouts or spinach. The only thing I’m allergic to is chocolate,” Joey replied. The chef openly gaped at him.“Surely you jest?!” he gasped.Joey chuckled.“Dude, does it look like I’m wearing a floppy hat and trying to make you laugh?”Roland watched on as the two other males laughed. After they had calmed down, Joey explained that he could be around chocolate, but he couldn’t eat it. The chef disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a plateRoland left to check on things and the chef returned to the kitchen to clean up, leaving Joey in peace with his breakfast. The blonde made a face at the light breakfast, but he knew it was what he needed to eat.The plate had scrambled eggs, toast, and a small helping of grits. Joey had never tried grits before, but he was up for trying it. He picked up a forkful and put it in his mouth.“Hmm.”It didn’t taste half bad. Joey thought it might taste a little better with some butter and shredded cheese. Oh yeah. He would have to ask the chef next time. When he was finished eating, Chef Michaels came back out and returned his plate to the kitchen. Then, done with his morning work, Chef Michaels sat at the table with him. The older male engaged Joey in conversation. Joey felt at ease talking with the man.At first, they talked about each other in general. Gabe was the oldest of fifteen kids. Then they moved on to talking about their hobbies. Who knew the chef enjoyed doing magic? It seemed like only a short amount of time had passed when Roland came back in the room.“…dash of pepper.”Gabe shook his head.“I hadn’t thought of trying that before. I shall endeavor to try it the next time I cook that particular dish,” Gabe told him.Joey turned his wheelchair around when Roland cleared his throat.“I’m guessing my special guest is here, huh?” Joey asked.Roland nodded. Gabe stood up and told Joey he would speak with him again later. Joey nodded before wheeling himself out of the dining room. Roland walked beside him so he could show them all to the downstairs study.Joey wasn’t surprised to see Officer McCallahan. Since he and the officer were getting along better, Joey figured they would send him. It was the man next to him that surprised the abused teen.“Captain Mouri? I wasn’t expecting to see you, sir,” Joey said, pulling up to be in front of them.Captain Mouri smiled down at him.“I know it’s a bit unusual, Mr. Wheeler. But the District Attorney wants to make sure we have a solid case. He requested that I be present when Officer McCallahan takes your statement. Will that be a problem?” Captain Mouri asked.Joey shook his head.“No, sir. It’ll be fine. I’ll do what it takes to make muh dad stop.” Joey flashed them a small, sad smile. “ ‘m tired of being in pain.”The two officers smiled softly back at him. Such a simple wish from an abused youth. Silently, Roland agreed with them. The man showed them to the study and left them alone to do their interview. He sat down in the security room and zoomed the camera in on the three.Roland put a CD in and started saving the live feed. This was one order he was pleased to follow. It was an invasion of privacy on the abused teen, but he hoped that it would change Kaiba’s opinion of Wheeler. If anything else, the two might even become friends at the end of all this.Although I wouldn’t bet my paycheck on it, Roland thought./……/
Dinner was a surprisingly quiet affair. Seto sat at the head of the table eating a small plate of food. On his right sat Mokuba who was bouncing happily in his chair. Sitting a bit further down from Seto and on the left was Joey. The blonde had his head down, slowly and quietly eating his own dinner.
After slurping up a large piece of spaghetti, Mokuba broke the silence.“How do you like your room, Joey?” Mokuba asked.Joey lifted his head to glance at the silent older brother before flashing a small smile at Mokuba.“It’s a great room, Mokie. Thanks,” Joey answered.Mokuba smiled before turning that blinding smile to his brother. Seto looked at him with a raised eyebrow.“The testing went really well today. The changes to the graphics made things a lot easier. I had a few concerns, though,” Mokuba told him.Out of the corner of his eye, Joey watched Seto give his full attention to his brother. He asked him a few questions and listened intently to the young boy’s responses. Joey felt out of place and like he was intruding while the brothers discussed work. Suddenly, he lost his appetite.Joey pushed his chair back and put his plate down on his lap. He turned his wheelchair to go to the kitchen.“Wheeler.”Joey froze. This was the first time Kaiba had directly addressed him since interrogating him in the hospital. Joey lifted his gaze to look into a pair of solid cerulean eyes.“Done already?”The question was innocent. There was no hint of mocking or teasing.“ ‘m not really hungry,” Joey replied.Seto found this believable. After all, Wheeler knew his limitations. Or at least, when it didn’t come to his dueling.“Leave your plate, Wheeler. The chef will get it,” Seto told him.At this, Joey openly frowned. Seto raised his eyebrows in question.“It’s not a problem, Kaiba. Most people would call it common courtesy. ‘sides, I gotta ask Gabe a question,” Joey explained. This time, it was Seto’s turn to frown. He watched Joey push his wheelchair through the dining room and into the kitchen. Seto turned back to fix his confused look on his younger brother.“Gabe?”Mokuba grinned.“Roland said Joey spent part of his morning with Chef Michaels. He told Joey he could call him by his first name and Joey asked if he could call him Gabe.” Chuckle. “Chef thought it was hilarious!”Seto shook his head with a roll of his eyes. He reminded Mokuba that Reagan’s father would be by soon to pick him up. Mokuba quickly gobbled down the rest of his dinner. He snatched up his plate and disappeared into the kitchen.Seto smirked as he looked at the folder beside his plate. Roland had brought it to him under the guise of a new contract to look over. In reality, the folder had the CD in it that he had asked Roland for. He intended to wait until Joey retired for the night to watch the video in his home office.END OF CHAPTER FOURWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
