“Try not to fall too far behind, the last time I took a partner down here they got lost for weeks. I think a Morlock got them…munch munch.” He teased, well aware of her dislike for enclosed spaces. The hallway was poorly lit by pot lights that seemed to be burnt out every third or fourth light, and the narrow passage made it feel like they were traversing a walkway created by one of Hollywood’s best horror writers. She gave him a punch in the arm, hard enough to sting.
“Wheeler, shut the hell up! This place is giving me the Screaming Willies all by itself with its natural ambiance, it doesn’t need the help.”
He laughed and rubbed his arm.
“Sorry, couldn’t help myself.” He paused before he pushed open the large double metal doors to the morgue and gave her a look as serious as he could muster. “You think this is bad, wait until you meet Bones.” With a theatrical flourish he threw the doors open and entered the large room within. Behind him he could hear Lisa muttering something, but was unable to make out the words.
“Hey, Wheeler I hope you brought me the money you owe me. Otherwise you could be joining the gang over there on the lovely metal bunk beds.” Bones called from across the room.
He was standing behind his examination table where newly discovered body lay awaiting his dissection.
Lisa paled at the both the sight of the corpse, and Bones, who resembled the bodies he worked with on a daily basis.
Standing about six feet tall he sported a pale complexion stretched thin over his face with dark sunken eyes and a tuft of white hair that sprung from his head in such a manner he looked as if he was perpetually scared to death. He was not what Joey would ever refer to as robust in any manner of appearance and he was sure that if he saw Bones in any state of undress he could easily be used in a teaching capacity to illustrate the human skeleton.
Despite all of this Bones had become Joey’s best friends over the years and the two of them played poker every first Friday of the month with the same group of guys without fail. The only time that Bones ever missed a game was at the birth of one of his seven kids.
“Yeah whatever, you goof. We both know that I won that money fair and square, you’re just a poor loser.”
Bones smiled good naturedly at the familiar banter that inevitably occurred between them and then turned his attention to Lisa who stood behind him looking somewhat green, her eyes darting to the door so much that Joey was tempted to grab her arm to keep her from bolting.
“So, finally you bring me something worth looking at. Hello beautiful, I hope this Neanderthal hasn’t been trying to crush your spirit to much.” Lisa smiled weakly at him and shook his hand.
“Bones, meet my partner Lisa. She may be a little spooked by your lovely establishment, but don’t let that fool you, she’s got a keen mind and a sharp wit. And just so you know, if you don’t stop the flirting I am going to call your wife.” Joey threatened.
Although it was meant as a joke, Bones pulled his hand back as if Lisa suddenly burst into flame. His wife Kiko wboutbout half his size and looked like a living doll with a very demure nature, but she was also known for her temper which when roused could scare most men into submission, and if that didn’t work she could wipe the floor with him as she had a black belt in several different styles of martial arts.
“Low blow my friend.” He gave Joey a poke in the shoulder, and then turned his attention to the cadavers which lay before them.
“I have been working with Miss Doe here most of the day, and I have to tell you, her story is not a nice one.”
Joey regarded the girl before them and could not help but feel a cold shiver run down his spine. Obviously beautify in life, this child was about the same age as his own daughter.
“ So, whan yon you tell me?” He asked trying to distance himself before the case got to him. Beside him he could see Lisa struggle with her own inner turmoil at the scene before her.
“Well. I estimate her death to be somewhere between eighteen to twenty four hours. She was dead long before she hit the water; who ever did this wanted this poor girl to suffer before she died.” He paused as he pulled the white sheet further down her body so they could view the damage that had been done. Joey regarded the map of welts and blackened patches of skin that seemed to have rotted off her body.
“These look like some kind of insect bites. You sure this wasn’t just an accidental death.” He asked, already aware of what the answer would be, for procedure’s sake he wanted to cover all his bases.
“Definitely not on both counts. They are bites, but they come from an arachnid, or spider for the less educated.” He teased trying to lighten the mood, his watchful gaze had turned often to Lisa in the expression he wore when rookies or the faint of heart entered his inner sanctum and were ill prepared for what lay within. “I had an expert drop in this morning and give me his opinion on what might have done this. You might remember him from our younger days. Weevil Underwood.”
Joey’s eyebrows rose up in surprise at the memory or the small, rather annoying duelist he had encountered in his youth.
“Ah, I see that you do.” Bones continued. “Well, Professor Underwood now teaches Entomology at a University here in the city and is well respected as one of leading scientists in his field. He agreed to come down here and help me out, as I don’t know any more about bugs than you do my friend.” He indicated to one of the welts on her arms and grimaced.
“He said that this was caused by a Black Widow spider, and the huge areas of necrosis were caused by the Brown Recluse spider. Since neither or these are native to our part of the world, and the odds that she could run into one species of venomous spiders, let alone two are infinitesimal. Someone imported these spiders just to kill someone; he also told me that she probably suffered for quite a while before she died. Whoever did this really hated this girl.” He cupped her cheek in a gesture of sympathy and affection.
Joey fought the nausea that rose up in his throat. “What about rape? Did you do a kit on her?”
Bones nodded. “Yeah. Negative. There are no signs or force, no bruising or vaginal tearing of any kind, no traces of semen. She has some nasty ligature marks around her wrists and ankles, which indicate that she was bound and tortured. In some places you can see right down to the bone.”
Joey watch Lisa out of the corner of his eye, she just stared at the girl in a state of shock. Bones looked up at Joey with an expression on his face that Joey had never seen before.
“You have to catch this bastard, Joe. I’ve never seen anything like this, and I gotta tell you man, I never want to see it again.”

Mai Valentine sat down in a lounger on her back deck and awaited Joey’s arrival. She knew in down deep that this was not going to go well, but she had to try, for her daughter’s sake. She had kept her maiden name for business purposes, at least that is what she told everyone, in her heart though, she felt that by giving it up, she would be giving up a piece of herself. It was all she had of her parents, the last vestige of the frightened child growing up alone in an orphanage.
“Why did you call me here, Mai?” Joey asked, startling her with his silent approach. She got up and turned towards him, her heart betraying her by beating a little faster at seeing him. She tried to calm her outside appearance, while inside her emotions were still very much at war.
“Joey, thank you for coming, it means a lot to me.”
He smiled bitterly; there was no warmth in his expression, so she felt it wise to continue on, her normally polished outer visage starting to crack under his scrutiny. Even when they were just kids she always knew that there was more to Joey Wheeler than just an air headed boy. You would have to be blind not to see his potential all those years ago in the dueling arena, she knew the first time that they battled that he would have her heart completely, he still did.
“It’s about Kyla. I’m worried Joey, and I know you don’t feel I deserve this, but I need your help.”
His expression softened at the mention of his daughter and the wall he put up just for her came down for a moment. “What about Kyla, Mai? What’s wrong?”
She put a hand on his arm to calm him down, but quickly withdrew it at the expressions of both pain and desire crossed his face. “She’s fine, don’t get upset. It’s that boyfriend of hers. I’m afraid he’s all wrong for her and she’s going to get hurt.”
Joey’s teeth clenched and he couldn’t stop the hurtful reply that crossed his lips. ”What’s the matter Mai, he not rich enough, doesn’t have the right pedigree for you?”
She winced and blinked hard against the tears welling in her eyes. She would be damned if she allowed him to see her cry, she had spent too many nights crying for Joey Wheeler already in this life time.
“That’s not fair, Joe and you know it.” She replied, her voice somewhat shaky. “I didn’t leave you because of the money. I had to go Joey, you left me long before that, she wouldn’t let you go; she probably still has her claws sunk deep in your heart.”
The words that had been so long unspoken in her heart were now free and she felt as if a great weight had left her, unburned she continued. “I never stopped loving you, I still see your face in my dreams, but when I needed you, you turned from me, you abandoned me.”
Joey could only stand frozen in spot as the normally composed Mai Valentine tore at his heart for all that she was worth. “I couldn’t help it Mai. She’s my sister, what was I supposed to do turn my back on her?”
Mai stated up at him and drew in a deep breath. ”Why not, you had no problems doing it to me.”
He reached out and touched her golden hair tenderly.
“Mai, she was so sick, still is, and you were always so strong. I never realized how hard all that was on you. If I could do it all again, things would be so different.” He looked deep into her eyes and stepped closer to her, the desire he felt for her making him forget all that had hapd bed between them.
“Why Detective Wheeler, how nice of you to drop in and visit us. Now could you kindly take your hands off my wife?” The cultured voice of Maximillian Pegasus broke their embrace like a hot ember as he stood casually in the entryway. Although he was no longer a young man, Pegasus was still virile and handsome, his white hair pulled into a ponytail, an eye patch that would have made most men look like pirates only made him seem rakish and mysterious. It was obvious that Mai’s good taste had rubbed off on him, as he no longer sported the frilly suites, but rather a more subdued casual attire of dress pants and silk button down shirt that Joey was sure he had seen in some magazine. Although his expression was that of boredom, Joey was fully aware of the danger that lurked beneath.
“Max, nice to see you again, buddy. Just having a private conversation with Mai, no need for you to interrupt your busy day.”
Max walked over to Mai and put a protective arm about her shoulders in an obvious attempt to mark his territory. He was intelligent enough to know that Mai still had feelings for her ex husband, but he was damned if he was going to let this touching little scene go any further.
Flustered, Mai gave her husband a tremulous smile and a kiss on the cheek. With a malicious grin Max turned his gaze back to Joey. “Oh, were you telling the Detective here about Kaiba’s fling with little Kyla?”
Joey stopped and stared at Pegasus, it was if time had suddenly stopped and he couldn’t seem to catch his breath. He looked back at Mai begging her to deny the words that were slowly burning a trail into his heart.
“Seto Kaiba is messing with my baby.” His voice was cold and expressionless; the rage he felt inside made him clench his hands so hard his knuckles were turning white.
Mai shook her head quickly. “No, Joe, not Seto. Mokuba. That’s what I wanted to tell you Joey.”
Joey closed his eyes a moment to compose himself before he lost his cool. “Let me get this straight. My little girl is going out with Mokuba Kaiba. Who just happens to be something like fifteen years older than her? I’m going to kill him.”
Max laughed in delight at Joey’s obvious discomfort. “What’s the matter Wheeler, isn’t young Master Kaiba good enough for her?”
Joey fought not to ram his fist into his smug face. Aware of the danger that her husband was putting himself into by baiting Joey like this she turned ant het her hands on his chest.
“Darling. Joey and I are almost done here, why don’t you pour me a drink and I will join you in a moment.” Her request was made in such a manner that he had no choice but to acquiesce.
“Of course, my love, don’t keep me waiting.” He threw Joey one last look of disgust, and kissed Mai’s hand before and he went back into the house.”
Mai sighed and sat down.
“That wasn’t quite how I wanted you to find out.” She apologized as best as she was able. “I know Mokuba is not like his brother, but the Kaiba family has too many dark secretes for my taste. He’s a little more worldly and a lot older than Ky, I just don’t want to see her hurt.” Joey nodded, unable to say anything. “Promise me, Joe, that you won’t tell Kyla I told you. I don’t want any confrontations with Mokuba either. I just want you to keep an eye on things. Especially where it concerns Seto, I don’t want my baby caught up in his darkness.”
Joey nodded. Mai got up and gave him a quick hug and a peck on the cheek that was devoid of any emotion, aware that her husband was no doubt watching the scene from inside the house.
“Thank you. There is just one more thing. Someone sent me a duel monsters card the other day. Mirror Force. I have no idea what it means, and I don’t like it. The last thing I need is for Max to get caught up in all that again. Please tell me that you had nothing to do with that.” She pleaded.
“Mai, I have no idea what this is all about, but you aren’t the only one who got a card. So far I would have to say it was everyone who was present during the duel where Yugi died.”
Mai regarded him thoughtfully. “So what does it all mean?”
He shook his head in defeat. “I have no idea, but I’ll let you know when I figure it out.”

Seto Kaiba stood on the deck at the back of the smaller house he kept just out side the city, for his private activities. The affairs that he did not want his family involved in. In his had he held a martini, swirling the clear liquid around and around in unconscious reflection of his thoughts.
It was a clear night tonight; the stars filled the sky above ane wae water below, it made him feel the need to be free of the shackles that were imposed by his position and social status.
He smoothed his thick brown hair down and tried to relax the tense muscles in his neck. He was eagerly anticipating the hunt that would begin soon, the need that consumed him night after night would be sated for a time. He could feel his body already starting to respond to the thoughts and feelings he was allowing himself to experience, the anticipating making him feel alive again.
It was time, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath of air before he headed back inside, his actions were the graceful and determined movements of a predator.

Tristan put down the phone and turned to Mako with a knowing smile. “Well my friend, it looks like Joey may come through for us after all. He got a friend of his to do a little research on your father and he just informed me that he has ay viy viable lead and will know something before the end of the week.”
Mako stood dumbfounded, unable to say anything, all the years of fruitless searching had left him empty inside with the knowledge that he would most likely never find his father, and know Tristan was offering him the first glimmer of hope in almost twenty years.
“Oh Gods, Tris. This could be it. I don’t know what to do.” He stammered in a state of shock. “What if he’s alive or worse, what it he’s dead? What if forgot me, I mean it’s been so long….”
Tristan put his arms around him to cease him panicked babbling. “I don’t know Mako. But what ever happens, we’ll face this together. I promise you that.”
Mako pulled back and looked deep into his eyes, feeling a little shaken by the depth of emotion that he found there, and drew Tristan into a deep and passionate kiss.
