Spolier: This chapter discuss September 11.
Seto was signing some contracts when his cell phone started ringing. Finishing the last paper, Seto scooped up the phone and answered after checking the Caller ID.“Mokuba, why aren’t you in P.E.? It’s only swim class,” Seto said.Mokuba’s voice was garbled and rushed with an obviously upset tone of voice. Seto sighed while pinching the bridge of his nose. His sibling could be so sensitive sometimes. One of the guys must have said something to him.“Whoa, slow down slow down. Say it again slowly,” Seto told him.“T-turn…news on…attack.”Swiveling around in his chair, Seto pressed some buttons on his desk. A panel on the wall slid back to reveal a large television. The television turned on, automatically set to the international news channel. The news was centered on an incident in the United States. The anchorwoman was so distraught as she was speaking that she wasn’t making any sense.Seto stood up and walked closer as the newsroom switched to a video feed. Seto gasped and the phone fell through his fingers, clattering to the floor with a loud crack of the screen. One of the buildings of the World Trade Center was crumbling and an airplane had just flown into the second tower.Seto’s whole body trembled.“You’re going to New York?”“Yea. Me and Indy and Patch. A few others guys from some other stations are coming too.”“Why New York, Joey?”“We’re going to check out their emergency procedures over there and see if we can improve on ours.”“Hmm. Be safe, Pup.”Chuckle. “You know me, Dragon.”“Yes, I do. And that’s why I’m saying be safe.”“Dragon!”Seto’s ears were ringing as he snatched up his phone. He hung up on his brother without a word and immediately tried dialing Joey’s cell phone.“We’re sorry. The number you are trying to reach has been temporarily disconnected. Please try again later.”Click. Seto hung up and re-dialed the phone number. He got the same message again. He started to panic as he pulled up the cell numbers for Joey’s co-workers and partners in crime, Daniel (Indy) and Patrick (Patch). His knees threatened to buckle as he got the same message on both phones.Hanging up, Seto called Roland. He was relieved to finally get an answer from someone.“Go pick up Mokuba and then come back here for me. Tell the security to send everyone home. The World Trade Center has fallen. *choke* And I can’t reach Joey.”/……/
It had only been a day, but it was a long day of worrying and a night of zero rest. Not just for Seto, but for all the families who had a loved one in New York. Seto had his business associates in the States keeping him updated. None of the families had heard from their EMTs.
In a fit of absolute panic, Seto had almost jumped on his private plane to fly across the world to find his lover himself. However, Mokuba and Roland had convinced him not to; the U.S. was already in panic mode and any extra flights in would be under close scrutiny. Seto had closed down Kaiba Corp and sent his employees home. He had the news playing on every television in the house. Seto didn’t force Mokuba to go to school; the kid could afford to miss a few days.Currently, the two of them were half-heartedly working on a puzzle at the coffee table. A half-eaten pizza slice sat on a paper plate on the floor beside Mokuba. The growing youth reached over to pass Seto some of the border pieces.“Now we go live at Ground Zero where rescue attempts are being made to find survivors. Hannah?”“Thank you, Frank. I’m here live at Ground Zero with a Volunteer EMT. I understand you and your entire team are out here helping with the search.”“That’s right. Right now, we’re just out here hoping and praying that we’ll find survivors.”The Kaiba brothers’ heads snapped up in a flash. There on the screen was a heavily dust-covered Joey. He wore goggles, a white hard hat, and a white mask low down around his neck.“We’re helping out as best as we can. It’s not our land, but we still feel the sting, we feel your pain. But we want our families to know we’re all okay. We’re here helping the EMTs, firefighters, and police here, but our team…we’re all safe.”The anchorwoman nodded her head and proceeded to ask him a few more questions. Mokuba launched himself into Seto’s arms, sobbing in relief at seeing the blonde. Seto’s gaze was firmly glued to the smiling image of his lover of two years.“Is there anything more you wish to add?” the anchorwoman asked.Joey turned towards the camera and flashed his familiarly goofy smile.“We ask that our families by with us in spirit and with understanding. We’re trying to reunite families before we reunite with our loved ones. We love you all and please say a prayer for America in their time of need. We’ll be home soon. Promise.”It was almost three weeks later when the EMTs returned. Most of their families were there at the airport to greet them. Joey bummed a ride off of Patrick to Kaiba Mansion. Joey was climbing out of the jeep when Mokuba was coming out the front door with his backpack. Joey looked up and smiled as Mokuba froze.“Hey, Mokie!” Joey called. The backpack dropped like a lead balloon and Mokuba rocketed into Joey’s arms. The blonde had enough time to catch himself to keep from falling back on his ass. Mokuba strangled his stomach with a death grip of a bear hug.“Joey, you’re finally home!” Mokuba exclaimed, excitedly.“Yes, I’m home, kid. Now can I have my spine back?” Joey chuckled, half serious.Mokuba jumped back and scooped up his bag.“Seto’s going to be real happy to see you.”Patrick smiled over at the two.“Hey, kiddo! You need a ride to school? It’s on my way,” Patrick called over to him.Mokuba gave Joey a quick hug before darting into the jeep. He waved goodbye to Joey as he buckled his seat belt. Joey returned the wave before turning around to walk back up to the front step where Roland stood waiting. He bowed respectfully to the blonde.“It is good to have you home,” Roland said.Joey returned the bow as he handed his bag off to the man.“He’s in the kitchen,” Roland added.Joey chuckled. Same old Kaiba. The morning coffee. A morning must have.“What’s he up to at this hour? Three?” Joey teased. When a grimace passed over Roland’s face, Joey’s teasing smile fell. If the head of security was grimacing, that usually meant a higher level of coffee than was usual. Joey swiftly moved across the entrance hall to the kitchen. He almost broke apart laughing when he found Seto mumbling a string of obscenities.“I hope that’s not cup number eight, Set. You’re going to be up all day and through the night.”Seto’s gaze snapped up. Cerulean blue met chocolate brown. A nearly empty coffee mug smashed on the ground, but neither male showed any signs they had heard it. In a flash, the two lovers were locked in a tight embrace. Seto clutched Joey to his chest with his head tucked under his chin. Joey’s arms were wound firmly around him as he softly cried into his chest.Close to tears himself, Seto could no more than hold his lover close and offer him what little comfort he could. His younger lover’s mumblings were jumbled yet made sense to him.“F-f-four planes…so m-many d-d-dead…….d-don’t know how m-m-many g-g-gone…”Seto didn’t shush his lover or tell him he understood. He couldn’t imagine what his lover had been through. Seeing the towers fall in person; hearing the roar of the buildings as they crumbled; searching endlessly for survivors, knowing the chances were stacked against him.Seto had felt similar pains in that single day of not knowing whether or not his lover was alive. Remembering what his last words had been to him. The last time he had touched him before watching him leave on a plane.
“You were strong, Joey. I missed you, Puppy. More than you could probably comprehend.” He pressed a kiss to the top of his head. “Let’s go. I’m not going in today.”Joey allowed his lover to guide him upstairs to the bedroom they shared. Joey stripped out of his clothes while Seto closed the blinds. Joey walked into the bathroom and washed his face. When he came back into the main room, he found Seto already under the covers. Joey dove under the covers and curled up to his dragon.Seto was pleasantly surprised when a warm mouth latched onto his throat. A voice whispered, “Make love to me,” in his ear. Seto groaned before reaching up to thread his fingers through golden hair. He gently rolled over to press Joey down on his back. With Joey still attached at his throat, the brunette gently ran his hands over his lover’s body. He couldn’t and wouldn’t deny his lover the comfort he so desperately sought. They moved in perfect sync. Their bodies slid against one another, hands touching sensitive patches of skin and moans filling the air. The blonde gave back just as good as he got from his lover. He bit and sucked at a sensitive nipple, groaning against his lover’s chest when a finger slipped in him. He released his mouthful and threw his head back with a short cry.Seto smiled down at the beautiful sight that his lover painted when he had a finger massaging his prostate. His head was thrown back with his throat bared to his dominant partner and his golden hair fanned out across the pillow. Two fingers had him releasing another short cry which melted into begging for the brunette to take him. Not wanting to hurt the other male, Seto leaned down to cover his mouth in a soft kiss while slipping a third finger in.When Seto finally sunk into his lover, the insides squeezed him in a warm, familiar embrace. Their lovemaking was slow and passionate, the embrace of lovers who thought they had lost one another. After a few intense thrusts to the prostate, they came undone together. Rolling to their sides, they ignored the sticky feeling in favor of snuggling together as close as they could get.
