R is for Repeat
He couldn’t remember when it first happened.
He wasn’t sure why it happened.
But he knows one thing.
He never should have gotten out of bed.
Seto had woken up the morning of Friday, November 13. Friday the Thirteenth. The most unlucky day. Of course, utter nonsense, in Seto’s opinion. All superstition.
Until now.
After a long day, Seto had laid down and woke up the next morning to November 13. A second time. He had repeated the day. He had repeated the day over 230 times. He had lost count somewhere around there. Nothing he did stopped the repetition of November 13. The same thing happened every day on November 13.
He woke up half an hour late, due to a citywide power outage. He stubbed his toe rushing out of the shower and bit his tongue brushing his teeth. After stumbling down the stairs, he walks into the kitchen where his loving brother accidentally spills a cup of coffee all over him. Mokuba proceeds to apologize profusely, telling his brother over and over again he was only trying to do something nice for him.
From this point, he doesn’t get mad. He tells his brother it’s okay and returns upstairs to change. Now they are even more late and naturally, Roland catches every red light through town. Seto comes strolling into third period halfway through the class time. He makes no apology to his teacher who ignores him anyway. He sets up his laptop and proceeds to ignore everyone around him.
Except Wheeler.
Wheeler comes blowing into the room like a hurricane, scattering papers all around him and disturbing the quiet classroom. The teacher slams her book down and rips into Wheeler for his tardiness, lack of respect, messy appearance, etc. Then she slaps a detention slip in his hand and shoos him away to his desk beside the CEO. Seto throws a smirk at the messy blonde to which he glares but wisely keeps his mouth shut.
The day proceeds as normal with classes, a loud cafeteria with rowdy students, and a project he was assigned to work with Wheeler. The rest of the day after school consisted of failed experiments at Kaiba Corp and him accidentally blowing up at his brother with Mokuba running away from him in tears.
Seto had changed the factors to his day multiple times with multiple scenarios, but nothing could break the repetition. He was at his wits end on what to do when one night he did something he hadn’t done before. After not blowing up at his brother, he agreed to sit down on the couch and watch a movie with him. Mokuba had just run upstairs to grab the movie he wanted when a news report came on.
“This is the nine o’clock news report. A seventeen year old male was discovered outside Domino High murdered. He was found shortly after seven. The estimated time of death was shortly after five. He is described as a seventeen year old male with blonde hair and brown eyes. His name has not yet been released as he is minor.”
The minor’s name didn’t need to be announced. Seto already knew his name.
Wheeler.
That was the one factor he hadn’t changed. He had agreed to meet Wheeler after his detention, outside of the school. But he never did. Even on the days he purposely missed school, the blonde still called him somehow and he agreed to the meet. But he never did.
Could Wheeler be the key to breaking the cycle, he wondered.
The next day, on November 13, he changed the routine. He waited outside for Wheeler to get released from his detention. It was close to that time when a call came in on his phone from Mokuba. He took it and walked away from the front steps. He got so engrossed in the call he didn’t see Wheeler come out of school or the hooded figure approaching the blonde.
“No. No, please, no!”
BANG. Seto whirled around with his hand dropping his cell phone from his ear, his brother’s frantic voice yelling for him. The phone fell to the ground as he bolted to the blonde’s side. A hooded figure was running away, but he ignored him in favor of trying to help Wheeler. There was a bullet hole through the man’s chest. Seto knelt down and pulled the male up into his arms. He pressed his hand to the wound, but the blood gushed forward, soaking him and Wheeler. He bled out before Seto could even shout for help.
Tomorrow came, November 13 yet again. This time, he waited inside the school for Wheeler. This plan didn’t work, either. The detention room had been changed and Wheeler disappeared out the backdoor to go up front to meet him. Same result. Bang, bullet in chest, dead Wheeler.
The next seven days passed and Seto changed every scenario he could think of. He even went so far as to getting himself placed in detention with Wheeler. He had gotten into a spectacular screaming match with the detention teacher when the man sent Wheeler on an errand. Wheeler disappeared out the door and there was nothing Seto could do when he heard the gunshot ring out from the hallway.
He snapped.
/……/
“Now, Mr. Wheeler, come up to the board and work on problem fifteen.”
Joey sighed. He pushed himself to his feet and trudged up to the board. He picked up the marker and started working on the problem. He was only halfway through the problem when he heard a ruckus at the classroom door. He ignored it in favor of finishing out his problem. His answer was smeared across the board when he was suddenly lifted off his feet and thrown over someone’s shoulder.
“What the Hell?!” Joey exclaimed.
His vision was distorted as he was carried out of the classroom like a sack of potatoes. His math teacher’s voice carried down the hall after him and his assailant.
“Mr. Kaiba, you bring Mr. Wheeler back this instant!”
Joey’s head jerked up. He realized now that he was holding tight to a familiar trenchcoat to keep himself balanced. But what the Hell had gotten into Kaiba?!
“Kaiba, what are yo-,” Joey started.
“Shut it, mutt,” came the angry growl.
Joey chose wisely to follow the command. He had never heard the other male so angry. Not even when his brother was kidnapped. He was carried outside to Kaiba’s limo and only then was he placed back on his feet. Disoriented, Joey’s head spun when he was flipped up right. He grasped a hand to his stomach to prevent his breakfast from coming back up.
The door was opened and he was promptly thrown inside. Kaiba jumped in behind him and slammed the door shut, the doors automatically locking behind them. The limo peeled out of the parking lot as Joey sat upright on the backseat.
“Kaiba, what the Hell is going on? This is kidnapping!” Joey snapped at him.
From under the fringe of his hair, Kaiba shot him such a dark look that Joey thought the man may kill him. He scooted back against his seat as far away from the man as he could get.
“I’ve had it, Wheeler,” Seto growled in a low voice.
Joey threw his hands up in front of him in surrender.
“Whatever it is, I didn’t do it,” Joey shot back.
The next command was snapped at him in such a way that Joey wasn’t sure he had heard the man right.
“W-W-Whadja just say?” Joey asked, stuttering a little.
“Lay down!”
A chill of fear tingled up his back, but Joey was quick to comply. He laid down across the backseat, a slight tremor in his body. He squeezed his eyes shut and flinched when a heavy weight came down atop him. He whimpered when his shirt was tugged out from his jeans and it was ripped open. Whimpering, Joey threw his hands up to defend himself, but his wrists were caught easily and ripped away.
Oh gods, Kaiba’s lost it! I ain’t gonna be coming back from this one, Joey thought.
He was so stricken with terror he nearly came off the seat when something cold touched his chest. Whatever it was moved up until it rested over his rapidly beating heart. Then it stopped. Taking a mighty big risk, Joey slipped an eye open and glanced down. What he found baffled him.
Kaiba was resting on top of him with most of his body weighing down Joey’s lower half. His head was on the blonde’s chest with his ear pressed to his heart.
Was Kaiba…listening to his heart?
He was even more baffled when his wrists were released in favor of two strong arms slipping under him. He was pinned to the backseat of a limo with his rival hugging him like a teddy bear. He wasn’t sure what to think of the whole situation. Or where to even put his hands. He hesitated before bringing them down to rest on the brunette’s shoulder blades. In theory, a good place to put them if he needed to jerk the brunette off him in the even things got really weird.
“Ten times.”
Joey startled. The voice rumbled against his chest, forcing his skin to break out in goosebumps. He mulled over the words and, speaking softly, asked “What?”
Seto squeezed the body underneath him, eliciting a small whimper from the blonde mutt.
“Ten times I’ve had to hear that gunshot. Ten times I’ve had to watch you bleed out on the ground. I’m sick of watching you die.”
Joey was stunned speechless. He wasn’t sure what to make of this news. He didn’t recall ever being shot so why was his rival claiming to have seen him shot ten times? And killed, at that! Not sure what to say, Joey brought a hand up to the back of Kaiba’s head and patted it awkwardly.
They laid down on the seat in silence with Seto’s warms weight pinning Joey down firmly to the seat. As they crossed town, Joey found more words spilling from Kaiba. He told him all about the day that kept repeating. He told him of things he had tried to stop the repeating and the discovery he made of Joey’s role in everything. It was a lot to take in and Joey found himself holding Seto back just as tight as he was held.
Once they reached the Manor, Seto secured them both safely inside. The entire staff was dismissed for the day with Mokuba gone at a friend’s house and only Roland left in the Manor. Seto fixed them both an early dinner before locking them both in the most secure room in the building.
The Master Bedroom.
Although he felt a little bit like a prisoner, Joey understood the paranoia running through his rival’s mind right now. He figured the best way to calm the teenage CEO down was to remain calm. It was barely six and they still had six hours until Midnight.
They watched a few episodes on Seto’s hidden television. They played regular cards and a board game or two. As Midnight neared, the two males were letting out jaw-popping yawns and laying out side-by-side on Seto’s bed. Slowly, Joey’s eyes fell shut. Seto’s eyelids soon followed.
55…56…57…58…59…Midnight.
BEEP BEEP BEEP.
Seto’s eyes shot open and he sat straight up in bed. His gaze flew to the clock. 8:30.
Shit.
Then his gaze flew back to the spot on the bed to his left. It was empty. Wheeler was gone. Seto let out an agonizing groan as he fell back onto the bed with his head flopping down onto his pillow. He snatched up the spare pillow and flopped it over his face before screaming a whole line of obscenities across a variety of languages.
A sudden voice broke through his rage and had him sitting up so fast, his head spun.
“Good God, what now?! A guy can’t even use the bathroom without you freaking out again?” mumbled the sleepy blonde while stepping out of the bathroom.
The blonde yelped when he was flung onto his back with a heavy body pressing him down to the bathroom floor. He was surprised to find him forehead to forehead with the teenage CEO.
“You’re here?”
Joey smiled.
“I’m here, Kaiba.”
“You remember yesterday?”
Bigger smile.
“I remember yesterday. It was Friday. Today’s Saturday. I got sleepy last night and said I’d lie on your couch. You refused and made me sleep in the bed with you. I guess we fell asleep before Midnight.”
Joey would have said more, but he suddenly found himself locked in a lip-lock with the brunette. He had allowed the light touches last night, knowing that Kaiba was just reassuring him Joey was real. Now he felt a tongue probing at the seam of his mouth. He opened without even thinking about who he was letting in. Suddenly, things were heating up even more. As he dueled Kaiba for control with his tongue, he felt the brunette roam his hands over his body.
It was odd. He kept pausing at different places on his body. When he paused, he rub over the area several times before pressing down on it. It didn’t make any sense. One pause was on his chest. Another his stomach. A really odd one on the side of his head. It took him several minutes after Kaiba released his mouth and moved on to sucking at his neck for him to realize what the pauses were about.
Kaiba was mapping out all the places on his body where he had been shot. It was a little creepy at first, but then Joey realized this was another way for the brunette to confirm that he was alive. He paused longer when he came to scars or bruises Joey had in places where he had been shot. Joey would mumble an explanation if only to get the hands off the marks he didn’t like being touched.
Fell and caught a corner of a counter.
Fist fight with a classmate.
He did have a gigantic freak out when the hands fell between his legs.
“Oh good God, don’t tell me some bastard shot me there!” Joey growled.
He felt the smirk alongside his neck.
“Maybe.”
“Kaiba!”
“Have to be sure everything still works, Wheeler.”
“I think by the way it’s rising that it works. Paws off, Kaiba!”
“Hmm…no. Need to make sure all parts are working. May take hours of…experiments.”
Joey groaned more out of frustration than anything else.
Shoulda known I was doomed the second he snatched me up from Math class, Joey thought.
With a firm stroke on his heated flesh, Joey let out a groan and forgot all about Kaiba’s strange encounter. Instead he gave himself over to the experiments and allowed his weird day to happen.
He only hoped there would be a repeat.
