Dark Temptations Presents
A Christmas to Remember
Chapter 5
@-->-->----
The black sedan pulled into the carpark of the Cedar Lodge and drove slowly towards the restaurant's front entrance, where it rolled to a stop. The back door immediately opened and a small raven-haired boy jumped out, almost bouncing in his eagerness. Only a stern, "Wait for me, Mokuba," from inside the car stopped him from running up the steps and into the restaurant.
"Hurry, Seto! The others are probably here already!" He moved from foot to foot, unable to stay still.
Kaiba emerged from the car and closed the door. He quickly put his hand on Mokuba's shoulder, holding the boy still as the car began to move away. "I told them six o'clock. It is still ten minutes to. While it is possible that some of them are already here, it is more likely that we are the first and that at least one of them will be late." He started walking up the steps and Mokuba quickly followed him.
"You mean Joey, right?" The boy grinned at the resigned look his brother gave him.
"Of course. I have never known him to be early for anything."
Kaiba reached the door of the restaurant and opened it for his brother. Mokuba took one step inside and stopped unexpectedly. Then he giggled. "I think you're in for a surprise, big brother."
Joey would not be late. He was already waiting for them, seated on one of the couches in the foyer. Yugi and Yami were beside him, while Tristan and Téa were chatting on another couch. Kaiba arched an eyebrow at the group as he walked over to them. "Well, Wheeler, I see you can be on time for something that involves food." He schooled his face not to show his disgust at himself over the words.
Joey glared at him and started to reply, but paused and looked at something behind him. "Hey Mokuba. It's a shame about the others, huh?"
Mokuba, frowning at his brother as he passed him, gave Joey a sweet smile and nodded. "Uh huh. I was hoping they could come."
Tristan looked over. "Duke told me to tell you how sorry he is. He had to work really late tonight. He's having a problem with one of his suppliers and he needs to sort it out quick." He grimaced.
Kaiba had been expecting that. Devlin's Christmas Pudding Party, as he kept thinking of it, had been the previous night and he had spent most of it discussing the supplier situation with the other teen. He knew how serious it was, so he had guessed that Devlin would only join them if he had managed to find a solution during that day. Apparently, he had not.
"That's all right. I hope he gets it all worked out." Mokuba smiled at Tristan, then looked hopefully at Téa and Yugi. "Any chance Mai and the others will make it?"
Téa smiled back at the boy. "Mai, maybe. She has a tournament tonight but we're not sure when it finishes. The organisers were as clear as mud about that." The girl rolled her eyes and sighed. "If it finishes early enough, she might meet us later." Going by the wistful look in her eyes, she was hoping that the blonde girl would make it, even more than Mokuba.
"I spoke to Ryou this afternoon and he and Bakura definitely can't come. His father said no. Ryou was really upset about it." Yugi bit his lip, looking worried. "I just hope that Bakura doesn't get angry and do something he shouldn't."
"Like sending Ryou's father to the Shadow Realm." Yami grimaced. "Even though he deserves it."
"Yami!" Yugi pouted at his darker half. "You promised you wouldn't start that again."
Yami winced and patted his partner's shoulder. "Forgive me, Yugi. It slipped out." Yugi leaned into the touch, looking a little mollified. He looked even more like a kitten that was enjoying being petted.
"Well just make sure that it doesn't slip out again. You know I like it best when things stay in." He smiled sweetly up at Yami, who suddenly looked rather flushed.
Kaiba arched an eyebrow at the conversation and decided that he didn't want to know what they were talking about. It was probably something lover-related. That was usually the case with them.
Kaiba turned to Joey and steeled himself for an attempt at a serious conversation with no insults or sarcasm. "What of the others?" It was all he could manage without more preparation, but at least it was something.
Joey hesitated, eyeing Kaiba as if he wasn't quite sure that the civil question had been directed at him. "No chance. There's a new exhibition openin' at the museum next week and Isis is flat out with gettin' it ready on time. Odion's helpin' her and Marik can't go anywhere with just Malik to watch him."
This was news to Kaiba. "Oh? Why not? They do not usually make an issue of such a thing, surely?" He could recall quite a few times when the rule would have saved them all considerable trouble.
Joey grinned and shook his head. "It's Isis's way of groundin' them. She told me they had a little too much fun at the mall last week. No details, but I figure they must have done something major. The cops were probably called, at least."
Kaiba's lips curved just a little as he nodded in agreement. "It sounds that way."
Joey froze, his eyes going wide as he stared at the brunette. Kaiba frowned as he noticed. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"I've hardly ever seen ya... Nah, never mind. It's nothin'." Joey shook his head, a little too quickly for Kaiba's liking.
The brunette's frown deepened. Before he could demand to know what Joey had been about to say though, Mokuba's cheerful voice interrupted them. "Well, since we're all here, how about we go in?"
@-->-->----
Kaiba had been prepared for a tedious meal, but he was pleasantly surprised when the company proved to be both entertaining and enjoyable. Joey and Tristan cracked jokes, Téa, Yugi and Mokuba kept the conversation flowing and he and Yami managed to keep their glares at each other to a minimum by the simple practice of barely glancing at each other. He was almost disappointed when the meal ended and it was time for them to go. From the sad look on Mokuba's face, it was obvious the boy felt the same.
The group walked out to the foyer and then moved off to one side of the room to talk.
"Well, looks like it's time to go." Disguising the movement of his head with a stretch, Joey glanced at Kaiba, who nodded almost imperceptibly.
Mokuba, oblivious to the silent by-play, pouted. "It's still early. Do we have to go now?"
Kaiba turned to his little brother and placed his hand on the boy's shoulder, smiling at him. "Actually, Mokuba, there is something I have not told you about tonight."
Mokuba looked up at him, frowning. "Oh?" He looked around at the others and his frown grew as he noticed the way they were all smiling, as if they all shared a secret. "All right, what's going on?"
"I told you that tonight was going to be a special treat for you, because you have been helping me so much with the preparations for the party. I meant it, Mokuba. But the treat is more than dinner here." Kaiba smiled at his brother's confused expression. The boy was too smart for his own good, sometimes. It wasn't often that he was able to surprise Mokuba like this and he was enjoying every second of it.
"It isn't?" Mokuba looked around at the others, then back up at his brother. "So what is it, then?"
"Come with me." Kaiba led his brother and the others over to a closed door on the far side of the foyer. The man standing by the door smiled and nodded as they approached.
"Good evening, Mr Kaiba. Everything is ready, as you requested." He opened the door.
The door led into a short hallway with another door at the end. Kaiba placed his hand on the doorknob, then paused to smile down at his confused little brother before he opened the door.
Mokuba gasped.
The door opened onto a scene that might have been taken straight from a Christmas card. The snow covered the grass and trees in a blanket of white, providing the perfect backdrop to the two horse-drawn sleighs parked in the snow, the horses tossing their heads and causing the bells on their bright red harnesses to jingle merrily.
Kaiba descended the stairs and turned to look at the others. "Well? Are all of you coming or are you merely going to stand around gaping like fish all night?" He smirked as they quickly shook themselves free of their awe and joined him in the snow.
He was not entirely displeased that the others had been unable to make it. Without them, that made their party number seven. Since it wouldn't make sense for there to be five in one sleigh and only two in the second, at least one other would have to ride with him and Mokuba. Kaiba forced himself not to look at Joey, even as he silently wondered if the blonde would be the one to do so.
He forced himself not to sigh in frustration as Téa volunteered to join them and Mokuba agreed.
As they got into the sleigh, Téa leaned over and whispered to Kaiba, "Thanks for letting me ride with you guys. I've ridden with Joey and Tristan in a sleigh before. It's not an experience I want to repeat."
She had seated herself beside Mokuba and was wrapping them both up in the traveling rug before Kaiba could ask her what she meant. Then the sleigh began to move and he didn't need to ask because he could hear the reason.
Tristan and Joey had burst into song.
The singing was loud enough for Kaiba to make out the words and it only took him two lines to realise that they were not singing traditional carols. He was suddenly very glad that Téa was sitting beside Mokuba, thoughtfully using her mittened hands to cover his ears 'to keep them from freezing off'.
"Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Santa Claus is dead.
Cyber Soldier, Cyber Soldier,
Shot him in the head.
Diane Keto, Diane Keto,
Tried to save his life.
Kuriboh, Kuriboh,
Stabbed her with a knife."
Finding it rather amusing that they had included Duel Monsters in the song, Kaiba fought back a smirk and tried to act as if he hadn't heard a thing. Mokuba was already trying to wiggle out of Téa's grasp and if the boy thought for a second that he was missing out on something, he would try all the harder.
Then the two songbirds in the other sleigh started another song.
"Rudolph the blue-balled reindeer
Had an enormous cock.
And if you ever saw it,
You would say it's hard as rock.
None of the other reindeer,
His cock would ever suck,
When they caught him masturbating,
They called him a horny buck.
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with your balls so tight,
Won't you screw me hard tonight?"
Then oh how Santa fucked him,
And he shouted as he came,
So Rudolph the blue-balled reindeer,
Had to get another name!"
By the time they were done, Kaiba was very uncomfortable and finding it extremely difficult not to show any outward sign of reaction. He had also come to a disheartening realisation.
It was going to be a very long ride.
@-->-->----
By the time the sleighs stopped beside a beautiful ice-covered lake, Kaiba had heard the twisted duo's versions of 'Ding Dong Merrily I'm Pie', 'I saw Mummy Groping Santa Claus', 'The Holly and the Massager', 'Oh Christmas Fuck', 'The Twelve Lays of Christmas', 'Hark but Boys are Horny Things' and 'Deck my Balls', a classic according to Téa. Fortunately, they stopped in the middle of 'Here Comes Santa Claus', although they had already given Kaiba far more information on Santa's sexual habits than he had ever wanted to know.
Kaiba waited until Mokuba had hopped out of the sleigh and was eagerly chattering to Yugi about how much he loved sleigh rides and how he couldn't believe his big brother had arranged all this just for him, before he turned to Téa. "I see what you mean about Joey and Tristan and sleigh rides. Do they do that every time?"
Téa grinned at him. "Yes. Although they took it easy on you. That was their 'only mildly naughty' assortment."
"You are joking." Kaiba couldn't believe it. He didn't want to believe it. He was very irritated that songs they considered to be nothing more than 'mildly naughty' had proven so effective on him.
"No. Trust me, Kaiba, if you ever hear their version of 'Good King Wench's Lash', you'll know what I mean." Téa rolled her eyes and sighed heavily.
Kaiba frowned as he ran through his rather limited knowledge of Christmas Carols. "I think you mean, 'Good King Wenceslas'."
Téa smirked and shook her head. "No. I know exactly what I mean."
Her smirk alone made Kaiba suddenly certain that he had no wish to ever hear that song.
It was all too likely that he'd end up embarrassing himself before the end of it.
Fortunately for Kaiba, the sight of his little brother eagerly heading for the frozen lake successfully derailed his train of thought. "Mokuba! Where are you going?"
Mokuba turned and grinned at him. "To the lake! Look Seto, isn't it beautiful!"
Kaiba smiled and reached into the sleigh, pulling out a box that had been sitting under the driver's seat. "Well if you're going there, you might need these." When he pulled out a pair of ice-skates, Mokuba's happy squeal filled the air. A heartbeat later, Kaiba found himself being tightly hugged by a very excited boy.
"Oh Seto! Ice-skates! Are we really going ice-skating here? Really? I love skating!"
"Gee Mokuba, from your reaction, we would never have guessed." Joey's teasing comment resulted in a round of chuckles. Even Mokuba giggled as he reluctantly released his big brother.
"Okay, so I get a little enthusiastic about things like this. I'm a kid, it's what I'm supposed to do." Mokuba grinned as everyone laughed again.
Kaiba was smiling as he tousled his little brother's hair. "Well then, shall we head over to the ice?"
Mokuba grinned. "Last one there has to model for a snowman!" He took off, scrambling through the snow to reach the lake, the others in laughing pursuit of him as they took up his challenge. Only Kaiba remained where he was, enjoying the sight of his brother laughing and having fun. He didn't move until Mokuba reached the side of the lake and turned to wave him over. "Come on, big brother!"
It was a perfect night for skating. The full moon cast its beams down upon the frozen lake, bathing it in an ethereal light that made everything seem tranquil and dream-like. For several hours, it was as if a spell had been cast over the group. Somehow, they all seemed more graceful than usual as they glided over the ice. Even Tristan and Joey were unusually quiet, content to just skate lazy figure eights rather than racing each other like they normally would have.
At one point, Joey and Kaiba found themselves skating together and they didn't make a single harsh remark to each other. They just did a slow circle of the lake, side by side, their skates moving slowly in unison and their eyes meeting every now and then, when one of them glanced at the other to find the other already watching him.
The two teens did not speak a word to each other and there was not even a raised eyebrow or a nod of a head when they completed one circle and started on another. Neither had to ask if the other wanted to keep skating like that. They already knew the answer. It was as if they were connected. For that brief time, their minds were one.
Then one of the sleigh drivers called out to Kaiba and their tentative connection was broken.
As he skated to the edge of the lake to see what the man wanted, Kaiba realised that he had been happy while skating with Joey. He couldn't keep himself from wondering what might have happened if he and Joey had been there alone.
"Mr Kaiba, it's almost half past eleven. Did you want us to start preparing the bonfire now?"
The driver's voice snapped Kaiba from his thoughts. He nodded. "Yes. Please do so. I will notify the others."
The prospect of a warm bonfire to chase away the chill of the winter air was enough to make even Mokuba agree to stop skating and help find wood for the fire. Had Kaiba not been distracted by thoughts of a certain blonde skater though, he might have realised that his little brother agreed to the plan a little too easily. He might also have noticed the mischievous gleam in the boy's eyes.
Instead, the first warning he had of Mokuba's plans came when they were in the wood near the lake and he heard Joey's startled yell. Kaiba turned in time to see a large snowball strike the blonde right in the middle of his chest.
Joey stared down at the snowball, then over at the grinning boy who had just pelted him. He grinned back. "Right, you asked for it!" He quickly made a snowball of his own.
Unfortunately for Joey, Mokuba ducked just before the snowball hit him.
That also proved to be unfortunate for Kaiba, since Mokuba had been standing between he and Joey at the time.
For a minute, everyone went still, staring and watching in horrified shock as the snowball slid slowly down over Kaiba's clothes, leaving a wet trail down the front of his parka and pants. Then everyone started talking at once.
"Sorry Seto, he was aiming for me!" Mokuba looked worried.
"Whoops! Sorry, Kaiba, I wasn't aimin' for you, honest!" Joey looked rather nervous.
"Are you okay, Kaiba?" Yugi called in concern.
There was irritation in Téa's voice. "Joey!"
"What? It's not like I hit him on purpose!" Joey frowned at Téa, then winced as Tristan grinned at him and gave him a thumbs up. "Tristan! I didn't! Honest! I was aimin' for... Hey!" He yelled in shock as another snowball hit him, this one right in the middle of his back. "Mokuba!" He whirled around.
Mokuba shook his head and held up his hands, grinning. "Wasn't me, Joey!"
"Huh? Then who did that?" Joey looked around and froze when he saw the smug look on Kaiba's face. "It wasn't." His eyes went wide as Kaiba knelt down and began to gather snow for another snowball. "It was." He grinned. "You know, this means war."
The snowballs started flying in all directions, the number of targets and attackers rapidly expanding until all of the boys were caught up in the snowball fight.
As the battle raged around them, Joey and Kaiba focused solely on each other. Each of them was determined to cover the other in as much snow as he possibly could. What with trying to avoid each other's snowballs, and the ones thrown at them from other directions, they suddenly found themselves face to face. The air around them was filled with hurtling balls of snow, but as they looked into each other's eyes, their faces both flushed from a mix of adrenaline and excitement, it was as if everything around them no longer existed.
The moment was broken as Tristan suddenly raced by behind Joey, bumping into him as he went. The shove caused the blonde teen to stumble forward. He gasped as he fell against Kaiba, the move so unexpected that the brunette was knocked over also. The two teens ended up in the snow, Joey lying on top of a very stunned Kaiba.
For a minute or so they just lay there, staring at each other in shock. Then a strange look crossed Joey's face and he began to lean down.
"Sorry about that, man. I didn't mean to knock you over. Joey? You okay?"
Joey jerked back, as if Tristan's voice had reminded of exactly where he was and what he was doing. "Uh... Yeah. I'm fine." He quickly scrambled to his feet, his cheeks flushed very bright red and his eyes looking everywhere but at the brunette he had just almost kissed.
Kaiba could have quite cheerfully throttled Tristan at that particular moment.
Joey and Kaiba's fall had effectively stopped the snowball fight, since Mokuba, Yugi and Yami were also heading over to make sure they were all right.
Téa peered out from behind the tree where she had taken refuge as soon as Mokuba had thrown the first snowball. "Hey guys! It's getting late. Shouldn't we get back to the bonfire?"
Since all of the boys were damp and cold from the snowballs that had hit them, they were only too happy to agree to the suggestion. They picked up the firewood they had dropped when the snowball fight had started and headed back towards the lake and the massive bonfire the drivers had already prepared there.
Kaiba took the lead, his frosty demeanor serving to make the others keep their distance. Even Mokuba decided he'd rather walk with Téa than his brother. Joey, Tristan, Yugi and Yami started off walking together, but after a few minutes, Joey caught up to Kaiba and walked with him instead.
"Did you want something?" Kaiba forced himself not to wince at the harsh question. He was irritable and he had no wish to examine his reasons for feeling that way. He also had no wish to walk with Joey.
"Yeah. I was just wonderin'..." Joey hesitated, then continued as Kaiba glanced at him and arched an eyebrow. "How come you're the only one of us not shiverin'? Aren't ya cold at all?" He blurted out the words and the colour in his cheeks deepened from something other than the cold.
"Not particularly." Kaiba smirked as a little devil woke inside him and urged him to take his revenge on the blonde boy for stirring him up earlier with the songs and for teasing him with the near-kiss. "I am wearing something special."
Joey looked at him. "Heating pad under your jacket?" he guessed.
"No. Fur-lined underwear." Kaiba felt great satisfaction at the stunned look his information resulted in.
"You're kiddin'?" Joey's voice was very faint and he looked rather dazed.
"No." Kaiba went in for the kill. "They're surprisingly comfortable too, considering that I usually don't wear anything."
At that news, Joey stopped in his tracks, apparently too stunned to move. Kaiba continued walking towards the bonfire, barely stopping himself from whistling the merry Christmas carol now running through his mind.
@-->-->----
After the ice-skating and snowball fight, the warmth of the fire was more than welcome to all of them. As midnight came and went, they stood around the bonfire, roasting marshmallows and chestnuts as they talked and laughed about all sorts of things.
Rather, the others talked and laughed. Kaiba just listened and silently marveled at how comfortable he felt doing something that was so out of the ordinary for him. He looked over at Mokuba and smiled to himself at how happy his little brother was. Even though he had originally planned for this outing to be only for the two of them, he was glad now that he had changed his mind and included the others. Something like this really was more enjoyable with company.
Gradually, the conversation became punctuated with periods of comfortable silence. When Kaiba caught Mokuba trying to hide a yawn, he smiled at the boy and tousled his hair. "Time to head back." Mokuba was too tired and happy to protest... much.
As they were climbing into the sleighs for the return ride, Kaiba felt someone watching him. He turned and caught Joey staring at him. The blonde immediately went red and looked away, but then he looked back. He hesitated, a strange look on his face, and took a step towards Kaiba.
"Come on, man! What's with you? Get in so we can get going!"
Tristan's voice seemed to break through Joey's thoughts. He quickly scrambled into the sleigh, a slight blush colouring his cheeks.
Kaiba wondered if Tristan had done it on purpose or if he was as clueless as he seemed to be. Either way, he sternly reminded himself as he climbed into his sleigh, it would be a bad idea to throttle him for it.
That kind of thing would not be good for his, and therefore his company's, reputation.
As soon as the sleighs set off, Tristan's voice could be heard singing. It took a few lines, but then Joey's voice joined in. Again, Kaiba was relieved that Téa was keeping Mokuba's ears warm with her mittened hands as the boy leaned against her, almost asleep.
Feeling unusually contented, Kaiba sat back in the sleigh and allowed his thoughts to drift. Immediately, images of the blonde teen came into his mind. For once, Kaiba did not push them into the darkest corner of his subconscious. Instead, he tentatively allowed them to flood his thoughts.
Joey and Tristan's voices floated through the air as they finished their first song. "Then I heard him bellow as he ran out of sight: A Merry Christmas to all, it's been a hell of a night!"
Since his mind had just gifted him with a slow-motion replay of Joey's near-kiss, the song lyrics struck Kaiba as being surprisingly appropriate.
