Chapter 4

Joey smirked as he sauntered up to Kaiba. "New day, new message, huh Kaiba?" He eyed the box in the brunette's hands and tried not to show how much he was enjoying himself, or how eager he was to take the box and see what was waiting for him inside it.
Kaiba scowled at Wheeler and pushed the box into his hands before silently stalking away.
Joey stared after him in surprise. "Was it somethin' I said?"
Curious, he used his locker as cover and peeked into the box. "What the...?" Joey closed the lid and took a deep breath before opening it again. But the contents hadn't changed. Along with the plushie was a balloon and inside that balloon was the smallest dress Joey had ever seen. It was a tiny piece of white silk with a short white skirt and white lace for sleeves. The blonde couldn't help grinning. "That is seriously cute." Then his grin faded as he tried to work out what message the little white dress was supposed to relay.
After a few minutes, Joey shook his head and sighed in frustration. "The only thing I can think of is that he dreams he's a girl... or he's a crossdresser. Great. I'll have to ask him about it. Oh well... at least this time he used a proper balloon." Putting the box in his bag, he headed off to his first class.

Kaiba refused to admit that anticipation was the first thing he felt on seeing Wheeler waiting outside their English class before fifth period. He also refused to admit that his pace altered at all upon seeing him. He was certainly not on the verge of being out of breath when he reached the frowning blonde teen. "I expected worse."
Joey blinked. "Huh?"
The brunette silently cursed himself for his hasty words. Thanks to them, he now had to engage in an actual conversation with the blonde thorn in his side. "The meaning of the message. Your last one was about what you saw in your dreams. My reply was that I had expected worse."
Explanation given, Kaiba attempted to move past Wheeler and into the classroom but was stopped by the blonde's soft voice. "You thought I'd dream about you in a dress? Any particular reason for that, Kaiba?"
He could hear the smirk in Wheeler's voice even before he turned to scowl at him. "No, it was merely the first thing I came across that would even remotely suit my purpose."
Again, Kaiba tried to move past Wheeler, and again the blonde teen stopped him. "Hang on a sec, Kaiba. I got another question for ya."
The brunette sighed and scowled at the irritation that was about to make them both late for class. "Make it short, Wheeler."
Joey looked at him curiously. "I was just wonderin' what that was about this mornin'. Ya didn't stick around long enough for your usual insult."
For a brief moment, Kaiba considered simply ignoring the question and forcing his way inside, but the look in Wheeler's eyes stopped him. The blonde boy looked almost... concerned. For some reason, he found himself replying before he'd consciously decided to. "I was annoyed because I knew the message would not come across as I intended it. Meaning that we would end up having this discussion."
Joey frowned. "Yeah, it was a hard one. I can usually see it once ya tell me, but I gotta admit, Kaiba, this one..." He shook his head. "You've been pretty good with these. What happened this time?"
Kaiba shuddered inwardly at the memory of that hurried visit to the toy store. Thanks to a meeting that had run past schedule, he'd barely had time to make his purchase. There certainly had not been time for him to look around and consider the most effective way of getting his desired message across. If only the shop owner hadn't already gone home, he could have bribed him to stay open for an extra half-hour, so he could have come up with something better.
Of course, there was no way he would ever admit to the truth. Before he could come up with a convincing lie though, Kaiba was saved by the bell. Literally. "Wheeler, if we don't go inside now, you are going to get detention."
Joey frowned. "Don't ya mean *we're* going to get detention?"
Kaiba smirked. "Of course not. All the teachers know I have important business meetings to attend after school and so cannot be detained for something as trivial as being late to class."
As he moved past Wheeler and entered the classroom, Kaiba was almost positive he heard the blonde boy growl.

The next morning found Kaiba pacing in front of the lockers, glaring at anyone who gave him a second look. Considering how unusual it was to see the normally poised and reserved CEO so restless, there were quite a few people who earned his icy glare. When Wheeler arrived, barely five minutes before the bell was due to ring, Kaiba greeted the blonde with a scowl that promised severe retribution for whatever insult, slight or offense had gained his displeasure.
Joey blinked at the look. "What's up with you, Kaiba? Your limo back over your briefcase or somethin'?" He opened his locker and began to shove his books inside, but paused when his question was met with silence. Glancing at the brunette, Joey was surprised to see that Kaiba had gone still and was staring down into Joey's schoolbag with the oddest expression on his face. It looked like a cross between irritation, disappointment and confusion. Following the direction of the sapphire gaze, Joey understood. He debated with himself for a minute before sighing softly.
"My dad plays poker every Tuesday night."
Kaiba frowned at the blonde annoyance. "You are telling me this because...?"
Joey busied himself with something inside his locker. "If my dad loses, and he nearly always does, then he comes home and uses the weakest excuses to tear up my room. It's his favourite stress reliever."
"Wheeler..." Kaiba stared at the boy in front of him, shock and confusion warring with each other for dominance in his eyes.
The blonde teen shrugged, "Better he tears up my room than me, I figure. Anyway, I've learned not to keep anythin' in my room on Tuesday nights that I don't want him to find. So, I kept this here last night." Joey brought out the familiar box and grinned as he handed it to Kaiba. "That *is* what ya were lookin' for in my bag, right?"
Kaiba took the box automatically and looked down at it for a second. When he looked up again, he was scowling. "If it was a problem for you to have this last night, you should have given me your reply yesterday afternoon."
Joey shook his head. "I had to get somethin' for it. Couldn't do that until after school."
He checked to make sure he had the books he needed and then closed his locker, just as the bell rang to signal the start of a new day of classes. As he started away from the lockers, he realised that Kaiba was still standing there. Joey hesitated and then shrugged to himself. "Hey Kaiba, we've got English first period. You comin' or what?"
For an instant, Kaiba looked a little surprised, then his usual cool mask descended. "As if I would walk to class with *you*. Do you really think I would lower myself by being been seen in the company of a third-rate duellist?"
Joey glared at him and was about to give his usual heated reply when he noticed something weird. Kaiba's eyes weren't gleaming or blazing like they usually were at the start of one of their fights. They were just... intense. Much to Joey's surprise, his anger drained away. For once, he didn't feel like arguing. Instead, he shrugged and started to walk away down the hall. "Well we're goin' to the same place. Just thought I'd ask. As for bein' seen with me... Ya really think everyone in this school is always watchin' ya to see what ya do? Newsflash Kaiba, ya ain't *that* great."
A few minutes later, Joey heard footsteps coming up behind him, then Kaiba brushed past. Instead of continuing at the same speed though, the brunette walked only a few steps ahead before he slowed just enough to match Joey's pace. The blonde boy started to smile, but quickly bit his lip to stop himself. There was one thing he didn't have the willpower to keep himself from doing though.
Joey's eyes drifted down the slender form walking ahead of him and he sighed softly as his attention fixed on Kaiba's backside. The day was definitely looking up.
