“Wonderful, now they can really learn to adapt to
these new forms of theirs, and explore their full potential.” Critias walked up, and, without any fear,
patted the white dragon’s leg. The Blue
Eyes White Dragon turned its head, gazing at him, then turned back to the
still-shocked CEO.
“Yeah, speaking of potential, I can’t wait to see
how the flying lessons go,” Helmos muttered.
Joey didn’t hear the comment, as he was too wrapped up in fussing over
his dragon, but Kaiba did. He turned
and gave a baleful glare at the knight, while Timaeus stifled a snicker at the
expression on Seto’s face.
“Well, you didn’t really think we went to all the
trouble of bringing them here, just for you boys to look at them, did you?” Timaeus chuckled, walking over and also
giving the Blue Eyes White Dragon a gentle pat on it’s lowered muzzle.
“Flying lessons,” Kaiba grumbled, stepping forward
and reaching out one hand. He paused
just before touching the creature, seeming almost hesitant for a moment. “Like that’s going to happen.” Appearing more confident than he felt, Seto lightly
stroked down the side of the dragon’s long neck, frowning at the feel of its
smooth texture beneath his fingertips.
He was becoming extremely disconcerted by the realism of every little
thing in this world, from the feel of furniture beneath him, to the smell and
taste of food. The teen could even feel
the breeze ruffling his hair, and the sun warming his back. *This all feels so real, even more so than
Noa’s virtual world.* He also didn’t
like the strange rushes of emotion brought on by seemingly simple gestures from
Joey, or the appearance of the other duelist’s favorite monster. The CEO was still trying to analyze and
explain the rushes of nervousness, then aggression and anger he would feel just
from simple things like the blond’s teeth being bared or Joey’s wings
flaring. *What’s wrong with me?* Seto wondered, blue eyes narrowed in
annoyance as his hands moved over the large white dragon’s side, stroking
lightly.
Joey continued to touch his black dragon as it sat
there; patiently allowing him to almost fawn over it, before the beast decided
it had had enough of that. It swung its head over, and lowered it further to
the ground, a low, rumbling roar sounding from its throat. Joey blinked and
started at it for a moment, then, in a flash of inspiration, he tried to
scramble onto the creature's head. However, before he was securely seated, the
beast lifted its head from the ground, rising to its full height, with Joey
slowly starting to slip off one side.
"GGyaaaahhh!" He shouted, claws scrabbling
for purchase on the smooth surface of the dragon's muzzle as he started to
fall, hooking them finally on the creature's lower jaw as it opened it's mouth
slightly. The creature shifted in alarm, and began to lower its head back to
the ground. Joey held on tightly, eyes closed, his own wings flaring out in
response to his fear as he swung his legs, trying to feel the ground beneath.
His claws slipped, and the blond teen started to fall, but his extended wings
caught the air, slowing his descent enough that when he landed, he only
staggered a step or two, righting himself and wincing as a dull throb started
up in his right ankle.
Kaiba turned at the first sounds of a commotion, and
was treated to the amusing sight of Joey swinging wildly from his Dragon’s
muzzle. He snickered and shook his
head, tail twitching, blue eyes sparkling with mirth as he observed Joey’s
antics. His smile faded however, tail
stilling, eyes widening a bit as Seto watched Joey’s wings. *He’s already learned to glide, after a
freak mishap?* He quickly turned over this rather interesting bit of
information in his mind, and realized that the Legendary Knights probably
hadn’t been joking when they spoke of flying lessons. “Great,” he grumbled, one hand clenching into a fist, his tail
lashing angrily.
Seto blinked when his dragon turned and gave a muted
roar, tilting its head and looking at him intently. He shook his head and gave it a faint smile, then turned to
Joey. “Well, it appears you two are
quite the matched pair,” he commented, smile turning into a smirk. “Neither one of you knows what you’re
doing.”
"Shut it, Kaiba!” Joey yelled, then shook his head and rubbed at his sore leg. “All right, mental note, do not try to ride
the dragon," he looked up at it and sighed as the beast actually seemed to
look rather forlorn, head dipped down, wings lowered as it watched him. “Hey, what’s wrong, pal?” He asked quietly, reaching out to stroke the
dragon’s large muzzle as the Red Eyes made a soft sound, nearly lying on the
ground in front of him. “Aw, don’t
listen to that creep. He doesn’t know
what he’s doin’ either, but we’ll show him!”
The blond said, while one of his wings seemed to move of its own accord
and brushed along the edge of the dragon’s.
"It was an accident, it didn't mean any
harm," Helmos said quietly, moving to stand beside him, one hand on the
teen's shoulder. "Are you all right?"
"Yeah, nothin' hurt but my pride, really,"
he nodded, looking at Helmos, before glancing back at the dragon, giving it a
wink and thumbs up. "We'll try
that again soon, but, ah, wait for me to say I'm on, before you start movin'
around, okay?" He chuckled, nudging his dragon gently with his wing. The beast lifted its head, seeming to cheer
up a bit as it gave a slight nod.
"I think you did learn one valuable lesson from
that, however," Timaeus observed, reaching out and tapping a finger
against the edge of Joey's wing. "You were able to use these to stop your
fall, preventing yourself from getting hurt."
Joey blinked, looking over at him, then extending
his wings a little. "Hey...you're right, I did, didn't I?" He looked
over at Timaeus, then Helmos. “You hear
that?” He chuckled, patting the Red
Eyes’ side. “It wasn’t a total loss
after all.” The blond glanced over at
Kaiba, who was currently busy examining his own dragon, as if the CEO still
didn’t believe anything he saw was real.
"Ooh, that gives me an idea... Wouldn't it just piss Kaiba right
off if I learned to fly before he did? Rich boy doesn't even believe in any of this,
never mind tryin' to adapt, or maybe have a little fun with it. I bet I could
do all kinds of stuff before he even decides to get off his skinny butt and
stop moping..." The blond teen grinned nastily, rubbing his hands together
as the dragon, Dark Magician Girl, Helmos and Timaeus all sweatdropped.
Kaiba happened to catch the blond’s comments,
smirking as he looked up at the Blue Eyes White Dragon. “So, he thinks he’s going to learn
everything before me, does he? He can
barely keep up with school, and still can’t come up with any respectable
dueling strategies,” he muttered, tail twitching while his wings flared
slightly, making his dragon shift nervously.
“That idiot, I’m going to show him what it means to challenge a
Kaiba.” He gestured to his dragon,
indicating he wanted the beast to lower itself closer to the ground. The blue eyes did so slowly, waiting
silently as Seto climbed carefully onto its head. “Now, I think we can do this in a little more dignified fashion
than that dweeb, don’t you?”
“Er, Joey…”
Timaeus began. “I hardly think
that’s any kind of decent motivation to-”
But Joey was past caring.
He had already glanced over and saw Kaiba getting onto his dragon, and
knew it was only a matter of time before Seto learned to glide. “Aw man, now moneybags is ready to try
it. I gotta get my butt in gear! There’s no way I’m gonna let Kaiba beat me
here too.” He growled, looking up at
the Red Eyes Black Dragon. "I can't believe I'm sayin this, cause man, I
hate heights…" He said with a frown. "But I could really use a flying
lesson, pal." The dragon stared down at him for a moment, then turned
around slowly, extending its wings and lumbering toward the ridge. Joey watched as it leapt off the edge, it's
wings catching the wind and sending it soaring into the air. "Oh, sure, I
can see that it looks easy, but there's gotta be a lot more to it than
that..." He said nervously, moving to the edge and looking down with wide
eyes, seeing nothing but sharp rocks below.
"There is indeed a lot more, perhaps you should
experience it from a different perspective," Timaeus said, as the Red Eyes
swooped back around and landed with a loud thump behind Joey.
The blond blinked and yelped as the Dragon bumped
his back gently with its muzzle.
"Hey, quit shovin! I'm not ready yet!" He cried, turning and
looking up at the beast, hands on his hips, wings twitching a bit. “I think it’s just a bit soon to expect me
to jump off a cliff, don’t you?”
"I think it wants you to get on, so you can see
and feel how it's done," Helmos said with a quiet chuckle.
"Yeah… I
knew that," Joey scowled, scrambling onto the beast's back. The creature
waited patiently this time, until Joey said he was ready, then with a jump it
was over the edge of the ridge, the wind catching it's wings and lifting the
dragon into the air. Joey held onto one of the segmented armor plates of the
beast's back, closing his eyes tightly and trying to hold back a cry of fear,
as the ground seemed to rush up toward them.
The blonde opened his eyes after they leveled off and the wind died
down, the duelist no longer feeling he was about to pitch forward right off the
dragon's back. He gazed down at the
ground passing by quickly below them, a smile tilting his lips. "Hey, maybe this isn't so bad," he
murmured, tilting his head back and letting the wind ruffle his hair.
Kaiba watched all this silently from his perch atop
the Blue Eyes White Dragon’s head. He
frowned severely, then rose to his feet, arms out to his sides slightly. “Alright, I’ve had enough of this geek
trying to upstage me. Let’s do
this.” With that, he flared his wings,
tail waving, and found his balance before he leapt off the dragon. He inhaled sharply, but felt his
outstretched wings catch the air, slowing what had started off as a quick
descent. The CEO actually managed a
somewhat graceful landing, nearly going down on one knee before he rose to his
feet and smirked at Critias. “I told
you I didn’t need that moron’s help.”
“I think it’s quite the contrary, Kaiba,” Critias
smirked back, folding his arms. “While
it’s true you look much more skilled and graceful, you are still learning from
Joey’s impulsive, awkward first attempts at things. Why don’t you try something on your own, instead of showing him
up after you’ve already learned from his mistakes?” The knight asked, before turning around to watch the blond’s
progress once again.
Kaiba felt a bit stung by that accusation, narrowing
his eyes and glaring at the blond and his black dragon as they moved through
the sky to his left. “Just because that
idiot is willing to risk his neck jumping headfirst into things he doesn’t
understand, doesn’t mean I have to do the same.” With a shake of his head the CEO decided that he too would take a
ride on his own dragon, just to see how real the experience would seem. It was something he’d never indulged himself
in within one of his own VR games, or gotten to experience in anyone else’s,
but he’d always had the idea to try in the back of his mind. “Well, let’s do this then,” Seto growled,
gesturing again for his dragon to lower itself closer to the ground. Once it did, Kaiba climbed up onto its back,
sitting a bit forward from its wings, near the base of the creature’s neck
where he could get a good grip on it’s segmented body armor. The dragon gave a roar and started slowly
toward the ridge, pausing on the edge as the two of them continued to watch
Joey and his Red Eyes.
"Joey!" Helmos called up to him as the
dragon dipped lower on its next swing by the building. "Extend your wings,
get a feel for the wind," He and Timaeus shared a look, and Joey failed to
notice the way they, and the Red Eyes all nodded at once.
Kaiba did notice however, patting at the Blue Eyes’
neck gently. “Hold on, they’re up to
something,” he muttered.
Joey did as he was told, extending his wings slowly,
gasping as at one point the wind caught them and nearly lifted him off the
dragon's back. "Now!" Timeaus and Helmos shouted together, and the
Red Eyes rolled in the air, sending Joey tumbling from it's back with a
frightened cry. He flailed in the air for a moment, until his wings flared,
tail lashing behind him for balance before the rushing air was caught by his
wings, slowing his descent and allowing him to glide for a few moments.
Kaiba gasped, his dragon jerking in surprise as well. Both
of them just stared as Joey soared for a short time, and then dipped sharply
toward the ground. “He’s going to
crash.” Seto murmured, fingers
tightening on the segmented armor he was gripping.
But he didn’t.
Instead Joey managed to right himself, tail lashing, wings tilting
slightly to catch more of the air and slow down his descent, the blond managing
to keep himself from slamming into the ground. The teen was pale and silent as he glided down, but as soon as
his feet hit solid earth his mouth opened, and a stream of curses shot from his
lips. Even the Dark Magician girl covered her ears, as the dragon landed behind
the blond and ducked its head, cowering.
Timaeus and Helmos both stared at him with wide eyes, before Timaeus
chuckled softly.
"Are
you insane!?" The irate blond shouted. "I wasn't ready for that! You
coulda killed me! I wanted a flying lesson, not to be dropped from thirty feet
in the air!"
"But Joey, that's how it's done. Birds, and even dragons push their young
from the nest... " Timaeus began.
"Yeah yeah, I know, and it's fly or die time,
right?" Joey scowled, folding his arms.
"Precisely. And you're not dead, are you? We
wouldn't have done it if we didn't think you were capable of rising to the
occasion. You did wonderfully." Timaeus smiled.
Joey sighed and ran a hand through his hair,
frowning as his fingers stopped at his horns. "Well, I guess I do have to
learn this pretty quick, don't I?"
"Especially if you want to beat Kaiba at it,”
Helmos said quietly, walking over and putting an arm around the blond’s
shoulders. “Just look at him over
there, he’s already managed a jump off the Blue Eyes’ head, now he’s ready to
take a ride off the edge of that cliff.”
Joey looked over at the CEO, then scowled and said.
"You know, you're right. If I wanna beat Kaiba at somethin, I'd better get
my arse in gear, and get back up there and learn to fly!" With that said,
he turned and stalked toward the Red Eyes, who was only too happy to crouch
down again and allow the blond onto it's back; before long they were airborne
once again.
“Hmph, so he thinks he’s going to do this
successfully this time?” Kaiba snorted,
sitting back on his perch with a smirk.
“Let’s just watch this once more, and don’t you even consider trying
that little stunt with me,” the CEO said softly, quirking a brow as his dragon
gave what sounded rather like an amused snort of its own.
Joey tensed as the Red Eyes leapt off the edge of
the cliff, but he managed not to cry out or close his eyes this time. Instead he concentrated hard on the feel of
the wind rushing past his wings, trying to learn by watching how his dragon
leveled them off and managed to climb higher.
He turned to look behind them once they were up over the Legendary
Knights and Kaiba again, watching the beast’s tail. “I think I’m starting to figure this out,” he murmured, steeling
himself to leave the relative safety of the dragon’s back again. “Okay.
Here goes!” The blond shouted. The Red Eyes Black Dragon began a slow,
almost lazy turn in mid-air, as the duelist leapt from the creature’s back,
wings outstretched as far as they would go.
Joey gasped, paling again in fright as he tried to control his
descent. He was leaning too far left,
and at this rate he was heading for the edge of the cliff. The dragon, seeing Joey’s plight, turned and
flew toward him, trying to catch the blond before he went over the edge.
Dark Magician Girl and the Legendary Knights all
watched in silence as the teen and dragon veered suddenly toward Kaiba. “I don’t like this,” Critias said, taking a
few steps forward as he noticed both the Blue Eyes and Seto starting to look
defensive.
Kaiba growled and shook his head as he saw Joey
veering off course. “Idiot, I knew he
wouldn’t get it right,” the teen closed his eyes and sighed. He frowned, eyes opening quickly as he felt
the Blue Eyes tensing and shifting beneath him. “What’s wrong? Why are
you…? What the-” Kaiba’s words faltered as he looked up and
saw Joey bearing down on them, his dragon right behind. “Stop, you geek, what do you think you’re
doing?” He demanded, baring his teeth
as his wings flared slightly. He felt a
wave of aggression building inside him again, but this time it was different,
much more intense than anything he’d ever felt. He raised a hand and held it out in front of him, blue eyes
changing, fading to an almost bluish white as the palm of his outstretched hand
began to glow. “Wheeler, STOP!” He shouted, or at least tried to, the last
word coming out sounding more like a dragon’s roar than a human’s voice. As he shouted, a blast of white lightning
shot from his hand, lancing through the air and striking Joey in the middle of
the chest.
The blond gave a high-pitched roar of his own, as
pain coursed through his body, limbs twitching, before they and his wings went
limp. A hole was burned through his
shirt, leaving an ugly burn mark as large around as a grapefruit visible on his
chest. The force of the blast blew him
back into his dragon, the Red Eyes wrapping the claws of one foreleg gently
around the teen as it swerved and landed, holding the blond protectively. It set the teen down on the ground and
bumped Joey gently with it’s muzzle, making a small sound of distress.
“Oh no!”
Timaeus gasped, running forward, Helmos at his side. “Joey!”
“I’ll get the bed and some bandages ready!” The Dark Magician girl said, racing into the
building.
Kaiba meanwhile, sat on the back of the Blue Eyes,
staring in shock at the point where Joey had been blasted by the white
lightning. He pulled his arm down
slowly, staring at his hand. Seto
quickly went over the events of moments ago, trying to make sense of it
all. He’d felt the emotion building
within him, and knew now that the appearance of Joey and the Red Eyes swooping
down toward him like that had awoken some defensive instinct in him. What he couldn’t wrap his mind around
though, was the feeling of the power building inside him as well. He scratched idly at his palm, expression
stunned as he realized his hand and arm still tingled from the power that had
moments ago coursed through him.
“Wheeler!” Seto growled, looking over at the teen now sprawled on the
ground, a small tendril of smoke rising from the burns on his chest. He slid down off the Blue Eyes, stalking
over toward Joey’s prone form. “What
the hell did you think you were-”
Everyone gasped as the Red Eyes reared up, wings
flared, eyes glowing as it let out a shrill shriek. It opened its jaws, a ball of energy building as it began to
advance on Kaiba.
“No!”
Critias shouted, putting himself between Kaiba and the creature. “Oh wonderful,” he winced as he heard the
roar of the Blue Eyes behind him, indicating the other dragon wasn’t going to take
the threat to Kaiba lying down. “Kaiba,
get inside. Let us handle Joey.”
Kaiba walked up and stood beside Critias, glaring at
the Red Eyes. “I’m not going anywhere
until that dweeb gives me some answers,” he growled. He wasn’t about to admit it, but he knew, somehow, that the
dragon was trying to protect Joey.
“Kaiba!”
Timaeus moved over quickly and grabbed the stubborn CEO by the
shoulders. “You just hurt Joey, in
front of the Red Eyes. If you don’t get
out of sight, it’s going to continue to seek revenge. Your Blue Eyes of course wouldn’t allow that, so if this goes on,
we’re going to have a battle on our hands.
And none of that is going to help Joey’s condition!”
“What condition?”
The teen scoffed, folding his arms.
“Oh right, you’re still trying to convince me this is real. So let me get this straight, I really just
hit Joey with a white lightning attack, and now he’s really injured? Sure…”
He sneered, shaking his head.
“Dammit, Kaiba!”
Helmos shouted, giving the teen a shove backward. “If you don’t get in that building, I’ll
give up this form and go back to being a dragon just so I can give you a taste
of what Joey’s feeling, maybe then you won’t be so doubtful!” He ignored the stares of his fellow knights
as he glared at the CEO, then looked worriedly at Joey. “That dragon won’t let us anywhere near him
as long as you’re here. Now get out of
sight, I’m not going to tell you again.”
“He’s right, Kaiba,” Timaeus said quietly, gesturing
toward the other side of the building.
“We’ll go in through there. Once
the dragon sees you’re gone, the others can get Joey inside and we can try and
help him.”
Kaiba closed his eyes and growled under his
breath. He was trying to keep a firm
grip on reality, attempting to convince himself that all this was just an
illusion, and Joey’s seeming injury was just another way for whatever this was
to get under his skin. But Seto
couldn’t seem to ignore the instincts and emotions warring inside him, the
biggest one right now being something he rarely felt. Guilt. “Fine, I’m done
with this flying nonsense anyway,” he said quietly, turning on his heel and
stalking around to the other side of the building, Critias following behind
him.
Helmos sighed and walked up to the Red Eyes Black
Dragon, which looked at him uneasily, then over at the Blue Eyes. The other dragon roared once, then took to
the air, flying around to the other side of the building as well. Once Kaiba and his dragon were out of
sight, it lowered its flared wings, the ball of energy dispersing as the dragon
stepped back, letting the two remaining Legendary Knights pick Joey up
carefully. They carried him to the
closest entrance, mindful of his wounds.
The Dark Magician Girl met them there, opening the door, before
following them down the hall and into the bedroom set aside for the teens. “That looks bad,” she winced, looking at
Joey’s chest.
“He’s just damn lucky that it was Kaiba’s first
blast,” Timaeus said softly, reaching for the water and clean cloths on the
bedside table, as Helmos began cutting off the teen’s shirt.
Critias and Kaiba appeared in the doorway, the
knight joining his friends as Kaiba looked on.
“Frightening, isn’t it?” Critias
remarked almost idly, picking up some salve to apply after Timaeus finished
cleaning the wounds. “If you’d been at
full power, Kaiba, you probably would have blown a hole right through him. As it was, you had little control, and were
weak as it was your first, albeit unintentional, attempt.” He looked over at the CEO and sighed
quietly. “Seems Joey’s luck held up
after all.”
Timaeus finished cleaning the wounds, setting the
cloth aside before he went to stand before Seto. “Your actions have consequences, Kaiba. Whether or not you believe this is real, for Joey this is very
real, and now very dangerous. Please,
suspend your disbelief for now, and try to adapt to your surroundings. I don’t want to see either of you get hurt
again.”
Kaiba stood still and silent for several moments, staring
at the prone form of Joey on the bed as Critias and Helmos bandaged his
wounds. His brows drew together, a
troubled frown on his face before he turned away quickly. “Whatever,” he growled, striding out of the
room.
To Be Continued…
Aw man, poor Joey!
Figures Kaiba’d find a way to trump him v_v. You’ll have to wait for next time to find out if Joey’s okay, and
learn what’s happening back home! =P
