Chapter Five – Okabore
I stumble
on the sidewalk and collapse.
“Jono!”
exclaims Mickey standing up and hobbling towards me. He kneels beside me and
feels my neck.
“That
bastard,” I mumble.
“Shit!”
exclaims Mickey. “We’ve got to get you to the Safe house!”
“No, I’ve
already been. They said I was free to leave,” I say pushing myself to my feet.
“I’ll be okay. I need to go to work.”
“Selene
won’t let you work like this!” exclaims Mickey.
“But Selene
will get me help… the type of help I won’t get at the Safe house,” I say,
“Selene will get me vengeance.”
“Come on…
I’ll take you to Selene’s,” says Mickey pulling my arm over his shoulder and
helping me towards the club. “That bastard of a father did this to you, didn’t
he?”
“Who the
hell else would rape his own son three times in one day? I was so stupid! I
should never have gone home today!” I exclaim.
“Three
times? Shit!” gasps Mickey, “Fuck, Jono! This is not your fault! He’s a bastard
and an asshole, and this isn’t your fault! You did nothing wrong!” He helps me
to the back door to the club, and he knocks on the door.
The panel
slides open, then shut again quickly before the door swings open. “Jono!”
exclaims Hourglass moving to support my other side and help Mickey and me into
the club, “What in the name of the Goddess happened to you, Jono?”
“His father. Rape. Three
times,” says Mickey giving Hourglass the short, short version of what happened.
“Hey, Mak!
Watch the door!” exclaims Hourglass, calling out to Mako who walks towards us
from the stage area.
“On it!”
exclaims Mako looking at me with worried eyes.
Hourglass
and Mickey help me towards my changing room where they deposit me on the bed.
“Stay with
Jono!” exclaims Hourglass glaring at Mickey.
Mickey
nods. “I wasn’t planning on leaving!”
Hourglass
hurries out of my room.
“So you
went to the Safe house?” asks Mickey, “You know they’re going to report this to
the police and child services?”
“I know…
It’s not the first time they’ve reported it to the cops. The cops can’t do
anything. I don’t know how he did it, but he’s got the cops in his back
pocket,” I say.
Selene,
wearing a cute panda bear mask, runs into my room behind Hourglass. He looks at
me and flinches. “Jono!”
“That bad,
huh?” I ask.
“It’s not
that you look bad. I can’t really tell that anything’s wrong with you other
than maybe exhaustion,” says Selene, “but you do look like shit in that sense.”
I nod.
“Hourglass,
can you take Jono’s guest outside?” asks Selene.
“I’ll be
fine now, Mickey,” I say, “but hold up a second.” I dig into my pocket and pull
out a five-dollar bill. I hold it out towards Mickey. “Go on and take it.”
“I don’t
want it!” exclaims Mickey glaring at me.
“Fine…
Hourglass, buy Mickey a drink on me,” I say passing the money to Hourglass.
“Sure
thing, Jono,” says Hourglass escorting Mickey out. He closes the door tightly.
“I’ve
already been to the Safe house,” I say, “and I’m not going back to my dad’s
house… I’ll get some help when I go to get my stuff.”
“I’ll ask Hourglass
or Timeclock to go with you,” says Selene, “Now how do you feel?”
“I’m okay…
I’m well enough to sing, but I shouldn’t teach tonight. I shouldn’t teach until
after Big Bad CEO’s tournament,” I say.
“Are you
sure you are well enough to sing?” asks Selene, “I won’t ask you to…”
“Mak would
be disappointed! I promised him we’d do a set together!” I exclaim standing up,
“I keep my promises when I make them!”
“Damn
stubborn dog!” exclaims Selene shaking his head. His silver hair, pulled into a
ponytail at the base of his neck, shakes wildly. “Damn you! Jojo can go on in a
half hour if you want. I’ll bump your performance with Mak to three in the
morning. Mak can work the front door until then. He’s already been on stage for
his set tonight.”
“That sounds
like a great plan!” I exclaim, “Can you tell the guys I want to do Miss
Independent during my stint as Jojo?”
“I will,”
says Selene, “Now get some rest… You’ll get a wake-up call in time for you to
get dressed up as Jono before you go on stage.”
“I’m going
to get dressed now,” I say moving to pull out my two changes of clothes.
“Have a
good night,” says Selene walking out.
I quickly
change into my black leather skirt and a midnight blue leather halter-top. I
pull on my black elbow high gloves and dark knee-high boots. I grab my black
dog collar and wrap it around my neck before fastening it loosely. My fingers
brush against the silver bone-shaped tag dangling from my collar. I sit down on
the bed with my make-up case and start to work on my appearance, applying the
powders and liquids to transform myself from Joey Wheeler into Jojo Wheels. I
put my make-up case away and relax for a while. I wait until it’s almost time
before I leave my room and make my way to the stage as I straighten my hair one
more time.
Ani walks
off the stage and smiles at me. “Are you okay, Jojo? You look a little tired.”
“I am a
little tired, Ani,” I say walking to the curtain, “How was the set?”
“Good. The
crowd’s real responsive. Keep the charm to a minimum or they might be peeling
you from the arms of some guy out there!” exclaims Ani.
“Got it!” I
shake my hips as I pass through the curtain and walk onto the stage.
The music
begins immediately.
“Miss
independent. Miss self-sufficient. Miss keep your distance. Miss unafraid. Miss
out of my way. Miss don’t let a man interfere, no,” I sing as I stand defiantly
in front of the microphone, “Miss on her own. Miss almost grown. Miss never let
a man help her off her throne. So, by keeping her heart protected, she’d never
ever feel rejected. Little miss apprehensive. Said ooh, she fell in love.”
The beat
picks up, and the crowd dances and yells out excitedly.
“What is
this feelin’ takin’ over? Thinkin’ no one could open my door. Surprise… It’s
time to feel what’s real. What happened to Miss Independent? No more the need
to be defensive,” I sing as I start to move my body in just as excited a manner
as the rest of the people around me, “Goodbye, old you when love is true…”
“Jojo!
Jojo!” chants the crowd.
My eyes
move across the crowd, and I swear my heart skips a beat when I see a pair of
familiar eyes hiding behind a pair of sunglasses. “Misguided heart. Miss play
it smart. Miss if you want to use that line you better not start, no. But she
miscalculated. She didn’t want to end up jaded, and this miss decided not to
miss out on true love. So, by changing her misconceptions, she went in a new
direction and found inside she felt a connection. She fell in love.”
That can’t
be him! He’s not allowed in here! He’s not allowed in here! That can’t be
Mokuba! Goddess, tell me that is not Mokuba!
“What is
this feelin’ takin’ over? Thinkin’ no one could open my door. Open my door.
Surprise… It’s time, yeah, to feel what’s real. What happened to Miss
Independent? No more the need to be defensive,” I sing as I stare into those
stunning blue eyes and move seductively to the music, “Goodbye, goodbye, old
you, oh you, when love, when love is true…”
The man
with the familiar eyes wears a hat to hide all of his hair, and he sits at a
table with two burly men, quite possibly bodyguards. He’s shorter than the two
men on either side of him, but he sits up taller than Mokuba would. Maybe it
really isn’t Mokuba.
“When Miss
Independence walked away, no time for love that came her way. She looked in the
mirror and thought today. What happened to miss no longer afraid? It took some
time for her to see,” I sing, finally tearing my eyes away from the Mokuba
look-alike by closing my eyes to everyone in the room. I move my hands over my
clothing to entice my audience with how personal I’m becoming with myself. “How
beautiful love could truly be. No more talk of why can’t that be me. I’m so
glad I finally see…”
“Take it
off, Jojo! Take it all off!” shouts someone in the audience.
My eyes
snap open and I look around for the source of the voice. I see the bouncers
heading towards a table near the front.
Mako, who’s
acting bouncer for the moment, reaches the table first and grabs a guy in a
crisp business suit.
“What is
this feelin’ takin’ over? Thinkin’ no one could open my door. Open my door.
Surprise, surprise… It’s time, yeah, to feel… to feel what’s real. What
happened to Miss Independent? No more the need to be defensive,” I sing and
dance while Mako and the other bouncers drag the man out of the room, “Goodbye,
goodbye, old you, when love, when love is true…”
The
audience roars out in sheer excitement.
I bow down
low, giving the people in the front row a very good look at my barely there,
and thankfully well covered, chest before I turn around and parade from the
stage. I head back to my dressing room and remove the make-up before changing
into my pants and trench coat for my performance as Jono. I mess up my hair
before lying down on my bed and allowing the bliss of sleep to claim my mind.
I wake up
with a smile on my face when I feel a pair of soft lips kiss my forehead. I
open my eyes expecting to see sapphire blue eyes. I see blue eyes alright, but
the face attached to them isn’t the one I expect. I jump and shout out in
surprise.
“Sorry,
Jono,” says Mako blushing, “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Dammit,
Mak!” I exclaim shoving him away from me. I climb from my bed. I huff and puff
as I try to calm my racing heart. “Is it time to go on stage?”
“Yeah,”
says Mako, “We’ve only got a couple minutes. Are you ready?”
I look in
my mirror and run my hands through my hair to tousle it up. “I’m ready! I’m a
little sleepy, but that will wear off by the time we get to the stage!”
“Are you
okay?” asks Mako.
“Fine! I’m
doing okay,” I say smiling at Mako as I turn away from the mirror, “Let’s go
sing!”
Mako nods
his head and smiles at me.
I follow
Mako out of my room, and we walk to the stage to listen to the performer before
us. “Hey, I’ve got a question for you.”
“What is
it?” asks Mako.
“Mak, do
you know what the Little CEO looks like?”
“Of course
I do, Jono. Everybody here knows the Big Bad CEO and Little CEO by sight. Why
do you ask?”
“Jojo
thought she saw him… Little CEO… in the back with two men,” I say biting my
lower lip.
Mako’s eyes
widen. “Shit!”
I nod.
Mako grabs
my hand as a boy walks off the stage. He pulls me through the curtain onto the
stage and immediately releases my hand.
Our music
begins in the background.
“Yo’, man,”
I say.
“Yo’,” says
Mako.
“Open up,
man.”
“What do
you want, man?” asks Mako.
“My girl
just caught me.”
“You let
her catch you?”
I sigh. “I
don’t know how I let this happen.”
Mako shakes
his head. “With who?”
“The girl
next door, you know,” I say.
“Man!”
“I don’t
know what to do.”
“Say it
wasn’t you,” says Mako simply.
“Alright!”
I exclaim starting to dance. I sing, “Honey came in and she caught me
red-handed creeping with the girl next door. Picture this, we were both butt
naked banging on the bathroom floor! How could I forget that I had given her an
extra key? All this time she was standing there, she never took her eyes off
me!”
“How you
can grant the woman access to your villa, trespasser and a witness while you
cling to your pillow. You better watch your back before she turn into a killer.
Best for you and the situation not to call the beaner,” sings Mako moving to
the music alongside me, “To be a true player you have to know how to play. If
she say you’re not, convince her, say you’re gay. Never admit to a word when
she say makes a claim, and you tell her, baby, no way!”
My eyes
settle once more on the Mokuba look alike, who stares at me with confusion in
his emotion-filled eyes. I move my arm in a motion to indicate him to Mako, but
no one else in the room will understand the gesture.
Mako looks
at the short man in between the other two and nods his head.
“But she
caught me on the counter,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“Saw me
banging on the sofa,” I sing thrusting my hips forward.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“I even had
her in the shower,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako brushing his body up against mine suggestively as he dances
beside me.
“She even
caught me on camera,” I sing crossing my arms over my chest.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako shaking his head.
“She saw
the marks on my shoulder,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“Heard the
words that I told her,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
I cry out
in mock pleasure. “Heard the scream get louder.”
Mako slaps
my butt. “It wasn’t me!”
I throw my
hands up into the air as sparks fly above Mako and I.
“She said
our dealy was over,” Mako and I sing together.
The smoke
from the sparklers rises to cloud our vision slightly but not excessively.
“Honey came
in and she caught me red-handed creeping with the girl next door. Picture this,”
I sing as Mako and I dance back to back, “we were both butt naked banging on
the bathroom floor! I had tried to keep her from what she was about to see. Why
should she believe me when I told her it wasn’t me?”
Mako grabs
the microphone from the stand.
I wave my
hands in the air above my head and bounce slightly in my place just behind
Mako. I smile when I see the crowd start to mimic my movements.
“Make sure
she knows it’s not you and lead her on da right prefix. Whenever you should see
her make da gigolo flex. As funny as it be by you, it’s not that complex.
Seeing is believing so you better change your specs,” sings Mako, “You know she
not gonna be worrying bout things from the past. Hardly recollecting and then
she’ll go to noontime mass. Wait for your answer: go over there, but if she
pack a gun, you know you better run fast.”
I step
closer to Mako, but I don’t bother with the microphone still in his hand.
Mako places
the microphone back on the stand and crosses his arms over his chest as he
rocks his hips from side to side.
“But she
caught me on the counter,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“Saw me
banging on the sofa,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
I shake my
head. “I even had her in the shower.”
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako wagging his finger at me.
“She even
caught me on camera,” I sing raising my hands to indicate the hidden ceiling
cams.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“She saw
the marks on my shoulder,” I sing.
Mako pats
me on the shoulder. “It wasn’t me!”
“Heard the
words that I told her,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako. He gasps in joy as I wrap my arm around his back.
“Heard the
scream get louder,” I sing.
“It wasn’t
me!” sings Mako.
“She said
our dealy was over,” Mako and I sing together as we separate for just a moment.
I look back
to the three people… oh, wait! I mean two people.
The small
Mokuba look-alike doesn’t sit with the bodyguard looking types anymore. The
bodyguards are still there, but the other’s gone!
Mako
presses his chest up against my back and starts grinding into me.
“Honey came
in and she caught me red-handed creeping with the girl next door. Picture this,
we were both butt naked banging on the bathroom floor!” I sing hooking my arms
behind Mako’s head and leaning back into him, “How could I forget that I had
given her an extra key? All this time she was standing there, she never took
her eyes off me!”
“Gonna tell
her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. I’ve been listening to your
reasoning. It makes no sense at all. We should tell her that I’m sorry for the
pain that I’ve caused,” sings Mako shaking his head in disbelief, “You may
think that you’re a player, but you’re completely lost. That’s why I sing!”
“Honey came
in and she caught me red-handed,” I sing.
“Creeping
with the girl next door,” sings Mako, “Picture this, we were both butt naked…”
“Banging on
the bathroom floor!” I sing.
“How could
I forget that I had given her an extra key?” sing Mako and I in perfect synch,
“All this time she was standing there, she never took her eyes off me!”
The crowd
roars into applause as I pull Mako from the stage after a quick bow.
“You know…
I think that crowd would love to see you and me butt naked banging on the
bathroom floor! Or hell, even on the stage floor!” exclaims Mako.
“Well, we’ll
never find that out, will we?” I ask walking away from the stage, “In the ways
of our people, I’m still a virgin, and I won’t give that up in front of a
crowd. If I ever do give up my virginity, it’s going to be to someone I really
truly love, and it’s going to be special. I won’t just do it because people
want to see it.”
“Yeah,
well…”
“Did you
see that person I pointed at?” I ask quickly to change the subject, “Do you
think that could have been Little CEO in a disguise? It really could have been
him!”
“What would
Little CEO be doing here?” replies Mako, “You’re worrying about nothing!”
“Maybe, but
the deal I had with Selene means that neither Jojo or I will work for the
CEOs!” I exclaim, “Big Bad CEO hurt her once, and I don’t want Little CEO to
find her for him so that he can hurt her again! Jojo loves that asshole of a
CEO!”
“I know she
does,” says Mako, “but I’m sure that wasn’t Little CEO! I wouldn’t have let him
in the club if I thought that was Little CEO!”
“He passed
you at the front door?” I ask as we reach my dressing room. I look at Mako in
absolute shock.
“Yeah… He
slipped me three hundred bucks to avoid showing his id. His friends whispered
to me that he’s under aged,” says Mako, “That’s it. It’s his fifteenth birthday
or something and they wanted to give him a great night!”
“I feel
ill… I need to lie down,” I say entering my dressing room and quickly locking
Mako out. I fall onto my bed and worry myself to sleep.
* * *
I wake up
slowly and can’t help but wonder why my alarm clock isn’t beeping. I sit up and
look around me as I rub my eyes. Everything floods back into my memory as I
realize that I’m in my dressing room and it’s already half past ten. “Dammit!
Shit! Fuck! I’m late for school!”
I jump to
my feet and run to the door of my dressing room. I turn the handle, but it only
jiggles slightly. I slap my forehead as I turn the locking mechanism and yank
the door open. I run out of my dressing room and hurry to the employee entrance
where I see Timeclock smiling at me.
“Have a
good sleep, Jono?” asks Timeclock.
“Too good!
I’m late for school!” I exclaim.
“You’re not
going anywhere alone,” says Timeclock.
“What?” I
gasp and stare at him with wide eyes.
“Selene’s
orders. You need to get your school uniforms from your pad, right? And Selene
has put us all on strict orders that you’re not to go there alone,” says
Timeclock, “You’ll have to wait here for Hourglass, and then he will take you
to get your school uniforms and all your other stuff. Selene said you could
crash here until you get your own place.”
I cross my
arms over my chest. “So when is Hourglass getting here?”
“He should
be back soon. He just went out to grab some breakfast for you. We figured you’d
be hungry when you woke up,” says Timeclock.
My stomach
growls.
“It sounds
like we figured right,” says Timeclock chuckling.
“I guess I
am a little hungry,” I say blushing.
Timeclock
turns away from me when he hears the rapping at the door. He looks outside and
opens the door.
Hourglass
walks inside. “Oh, hey, Jono! You’re awake!”
“Yeah I am.
Timeclock told me you went to get me food?” I look at Hourglass with my best
puppy dog eyes and an adorable pout.
“Of course
I went to get you some food!” exclaims Hourglass passing me a bag from a nearby
take-out joint. “All yours! Dig in!”
“Don’t you
guys want anything?” I ask.
“We’ve
already eaten,” says Hourglass.
“Thanks you
guys!” I exclaim falling down onto a stool and opening the bag. I pull out a
cardboard container of fried rice and the chopsticks. I set the bag down on the
floor beside me and start eating hungrily. I almost forget to chew in my haste.
“Slow down,
Jono. The food isn’t going anywhere!” exclaims Timeclock watching me in sheer
horror.
I swallow
and smile sheepishly. “Sorry, guys. I’m just so hungry!”
Hourglass
shakes his head as I resume my eating at the same breakneck pace.
I finish
the rice and quickly switch containers, putting the empty one into the bag and
grabbing a full cardboard container. I open it up and inhale the scent of the
sesame chicken before sticking my chopsticks in and pulling out a piece to
stick in my mouth.
Timeclock
and Hourglass watch me eat the entire meal before I pull the drink out of the
bag and stick the drinking straw into it.
I take a
long drag from the coke in the cup. “Man! That really hit the spot!”
“Are you
ready to go get your shit together?” asks Hourglass.
I stand up
and nod.
Timeclock
opens the door for us, and I follow Hourglass outside.
“Come on!
We’ll take my car,” says Hourglass leading me towards a brown Cavalier. He
opens the door for me and I slide into the passenger’s seat.
“Do you
think…?”
Hourglass
looks at me, and I grab the door to slam it closed roughly. He walks around and
climbs into the driver’s seat. “What’s on your mind, Jono?”
“Do you
think he’ll be there?” I ask crossing my arms over my chest protectively.
“I hope he
is! I’ll teach him a lesson for beating on his own kid!” exclaims Hourglass
starting the car and pulling out of his spot.
“I don’t
know if you could beat him,” I mutter, “He’s stronger than you think.”
“He’s
stronger than you,” says Hourglass, “and he’s stronger than the cops. Do you
remember a few years ago, when your father came home all black and blue? After
the gathering…”
“Was that
the day… I mean the night of the full moon? That special one… the Blue Moon,” I
say, “That’s the only time I ever saw him hurt. He beat the hell out of me that
day for seeing him like that. How did you know about the gathering?”
“I was
there, Jono,” says Hourglass turning onto my street.
“You were
there?” I gasp.
“Yes I
was,” says Hourglass, “and not in a domestic sense if you know what I mean! So
don’t you worry any, Jono. I can take care of that bastard of a father if he’s
there!”
“I didn’t
see you there…”
“You did,
but you didn’t know who I was then,” says Hourglass, “I know I saw you, and
your little sister… and that friend of yours, what was her name? Valentia?
Valerie?”
“Valentine?”
“Yeah!
Valentine! Mai Valentine!” exclaims Hourglass.
The car
comes to a stop in front of my house.
I take a
deep breath.
“I guess
Mak hasn’t told you about me then, huh?” asks Hourglass, “You see… Mak knows a
great deal about me. He’s part of your group now, right?”
“Yeah…” I
look at the house and shiver in dread. “Me… Mak… my sister, and Mai… Plus
Selene’s our Mentor. Not a very big group, I guess, but at least my sister’s a
part of it. And I like having Mai there. My small group of true friends.
They’ll never leave me. We have too much in common.”
“Come on…
let’s do this,” says Hourglass turning off the engine and climbing out of his
seat.
I get out
of the car and close the door. I lead Hourglass up to the door of the house.
“Let me go
in first, Jono,” says Hourglass.
“Be
careful, Hourglass,” I whisper.
Hourglass
opens the door and walks into the house.
I follow at
a much slower pace than Hourglass and look around. I don’t see anyone besides
my friend. “It doesn’t look like he’s here.”
“Dammit!”
exclaims Hourglass, “I wanted to kick his ass!”
“Another
time maybe,” I say, “I need to get my stuff!”
“Where’s
your room?” asks Hourglass.
“Through
there,” I say pointing.
Hourglass
grabs my hand gently and pulls me towards my bedroom. He searches the entire
house for my father while I pack everything I own into my school bag and my
father’s luggage.
The last
thing I put into the suitcase is a picture of all my friends at Battle City. I
close the suitcase and grab it along with my school bag. I realize how little I
actually own as I carry the two heavily laden bags out to the living room.
“Do you
have everything, Jono?” asks Hourglass.
“Almost,” I
say looking at the family portrait hanging on the wall. I set the two bags down
and walk towards the picture. I clench my fist.
Within the
wooden frame, a very young Serenity sits beside a young me, and a blond boy the
same age as me sits on my other side giving me bunny ears with his hand. Both
our parents stand sort of behind and slightly to the right of us.
I slam my
fist into the glass. I don’t notice the cuts on my pale skin. I grab the picture
from the frame and pull it from the glass. I rip the picture to tear out the
two adults. I drop the picture of my parents on the floor. I fold the part of
the picture with me and Serenity and the young boy and tuck it into my pant’s
pocket. I swallow hard and look at Hourglass. “I’m ready to go now.”
“Let’s go
back to Selene’s.” Hourglass lifts my suitcase from the floor.
I snatch my
book bag from the floor and follow Hourglass out. We drop my bags into the back
seat and climb inside. I lean back and close my eyes as we drive away from the
place that used to be my home.
“How does
it feel?” asks Hourglass.
“What?” I
blink and look at him in confusion.
“Freedom?
How does it feel?”
“Like
someone just placed the weight of the world on my shoulders.”
“That will
lessen somewhat.”
I nod.
The car
pulls to a stop in its usual parking spot outside of Selene’s, and we grab my
stuff to carry it inside to my dressing room.
Timeclock
opens the door for us, and we carry the bags into my dressing room.
“If you’re
going to school, you’d better get dressed in a hurry. Then I’ll take you to
school,” says Hourglass.
“What time
is it?” I ask.
Hourglass
looks at his watch. “Or maybe I won’t take you to school. It’s almost
three-thirty.”
“Yeah… I
need to do some thinking,” I say.
“Be strong,
Jono,” says Hourglass patting me on the shoulder and leaving my dressing room.
I sit down
on my bed and sigh. “I need to call Yugi. He’s probably worried about me… And
Seto…”
Images of
that kiss flash through my mind and I feel like I’m falling. I don’t realize
that I actually am until my back collides with the soft mattress beneath me. “I
have to talk to Seto!”
I snatch up
my book bag and pull out my cell phone. I search through all the numbers
contained within my address book, which I conveniently stole from school
records, and I call Seto’s cell phone. I put the phone to my ear in time to
hear the ringing on the other end.
“Kaiba!”
“Well… gee,
you don’t sound happy to hear from me, Seto!” I exclaim.
“Joey?
Where the hell are you? Do you realize how worried all your friends are about
you? They almost accused me of killing you!” snaps Seto.
I bolt
upright when I hear Seto cussing on the other line. “You aren’t driving, are
you?”
“No!”
exclaims Seto, “I’m in my office! My secretary just dumped a cup of hot coffee
in my lap! Stupid bitch! She is so clumsy! I swear, she’s even worse than you!”
I laugh.
“Are you okay? Are you burnt?”
“I’m fine…
just a little wet. What about you? Everyone was worried about you. Are you
okay?” asks Seto.
“I’m okay.”
I sigh. “I need to talk to you. In person. Would it be okay if I came by the
mansion early tonight?”
“Of course.
What time?”
“About
six,” I say, “I need to talk to Yugi too. I know he’s been worried about me. So
I need to see him and explain a few things to him as well.”
“Fine… I’ll
meet you at the mansion at six then,” says Seto, “Where are you calling from? I
don’t recognize this phone number.”
“Oh, I
borrowed a friend’s cell!” I exclaim smiling.
“Yeah,
right. Like someone would let you borrow a cell phone.”
I can hear
the sarcasm in Seto’s words. I chuckle.
Seto
chuckles as well.
“I’ll see
you at six. Okay?”
“I’ll be
waiting.”
“Bye.” I
hang up the phone. I sigh as I stuff my cell phone into my jacket pocket and
walk out of the room. I head out to the door where Timeclock waits to let
people in and out. “Hey, Timeclock. I need to go out for a while. I may or may
not be back tonight. I’m going to visit some classmates. Hopefully I’ll be able
to come back for my clothes at the very least though. I’m not sure cause no one
knows I work here and I don’t want this to be the way that they find out.”
“And if you
don’t come back, where would you be staying?” asks Timeclock.
I smile.
“With a friend, I hope. I’ll know later.”
“You be
careful now, you hear?” asks Timeclock giving me an odd look, sort of a cross
between a skeptical scowl and a concerned frown.
I nod.
Timeclock
opens the door for me, and I duck out into the afternoon light.
I hurry
away from the club and run towards the Kame Game Shop. I burst through the door
with the jingling of the bell to accompany me. I see the old man behind the
counter. “Hey, Grandpa! Is Yug’ around?”
The door to
the back room swings open and Yugi rushes out. “Joey!”
“Hi, Yugi,”
I say.
Yugi rushes
to me and throws his arms around my waist. He sobs quietly into my stomach.
I pat
Yugi’s head. “It’s okay, Yugi! It’s okay! I’m okay… don’t cry!”
Yugi pulls
away from me and glares at me.
Oh, wait…
that’s not Yugi! That’s the other Yugi! It’s Yami! Oh, shit, and I made Yugi
cry.
“Come!”
commands Yami grabbing my hand and pulling me into the back room. He pushes me
onto the couch. “What happened to you? Do you realize how worried Yugi was
about you? He was afraid that you had been killed!”
“I’m sorry,
Yami!” I exclaim quickly, “I was going to tell Yugi. That’s why I came here!”
“Then tell
us now! He is listening!” exclaims Yami.
“I would
much rather tell you both,” I say taking a deep breath, “You two can separate
bodies for a short time. Will you please do so… so I can see you both, Yami…”
Yami glares
at me. Then he suddenly sighs.
I look away
for a moment, and when I look back, Yugi stands in front of me with a
ghost-like Yami beside him.
“What
happened, Joey?” asks Yugi.
“My dad…
He, uh…”
“He what?”
asks Yami in a demanding tone.
I cringe at
the tone of voice. “Don’t speak! Don’t speak! Just listen!”
“We’re
listening, Joey,” says Yugi quietly. He sits down beside me and places his hand
on my shoulder.
I need a
shoulder to cry on. I’ve always needed a shoulder to cry on, but I would never
admit what was happening to me. Last night wasn’t the first time. That bastard
has been doing this for years, but I’m ready to accept the comfort I need. “He
raped me last night.”
Yugi gasps
and pulls me into an embrace.
I bury my
face into Yugi’s shoulder and cry along with him.
“How could
he do that to you?” asks Yami in angered shock, “You’re his son!”
“Not
anymore!” I exclaim after a long crying spell. I pull away from Yugi just
enough to wipe my eyes on the collar of his shirt. “I am not his child
anymore!”
“You can’t
go back there!” exclaims Yugi wiping his own eyes and staring at me pleadingly.
“I won’t.”
I take a deep breath to calm my heart, lightened now by the tears shed, and I
smile good-naturedly. “I’m not going back. I went to a hospital last night, and
they kept me into the morning. After I was released, I went to my friend… the
one I will be house-sitting for.”
Yugi nods
for me to continue.
I hate
lying to Yugi! “He helped me get my stuff from dad’s place. He agreed to let me
move in early, but it may not be so early. I’m going to talk to Se… I’m going
to talk to Kaiba and see if I can stay with him for a little while.”
Yami closes
his eyes. “How long has your father been raping you? Was this the first time?
And do not lie to me, Joey. I will know if you do.”
“He’s done
it before,” I whisper, “Now please, don’t ask anymore.”
“Are you
okay, Joey?” asks Yugi quietly.
“I’ll be
fine,” I say in a more confident tone. “I’m strong enough to get through this.
I can handle myself. I can do this on my own. I just might need a little help
sometimes.”
“Don’t
worry. When you do need help, we’ll be here for you, Joey… all of your friends
will be,” says Yugi.
“That’s
right,” says Yami looking at me sincerely.
“Thanks…”
“So… you
want to stay with Kaiba. You are welcome here, Joey,” says Yami.
“I don’t
want to impose on you. And besides, he’s already feeding me.” I feel the blood
rush to my face. Dammit. I’m blushing again. “He’s offered me food whenever I
want it.”
Yugi smiles
at me. “He must really have a crush on you! He’s seen you eat before!”
I chuckle
lightly. “Yeah… well, I should be going. I’m meeting him to talk soon. I need
to ask him if I can stay at his place. Plus… I think he sounded a bit worried
when I called him earlier. I called to set up a meeting with him right before I
came over here to see you guys.”
“Don’t
leave Kaiba’s mansion until he agrees to let you stay with him,” orders Yami.
“Although I
don’t think it will take much convincing,” whispers Yugi.
I smile.
“Are you
sure you’re okay?” asks Yugi.
“Not yet,
but soon… I will be,” I say. I stand up from the couch.
Yami and
Yugi both smile at me as I head out.
I start
walking towards the Kaiba mansion. I don’t think about anything as I move down
the streets. Nothing really seems to matter to me except for what I plan to do.
I’m going to go up to Seto and ask him to let me stay with him. I’m his puppy
after all. He has to make sure that I am well fed and housed. He’s ensuring
that I do have food, but he isn’t keeping a roof over my head. If he expects me
to be his puppy, then he has to let me stay with him.
I listen to
the sounds around me. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. That doesn’t surprise
me. Everything in this part of town is ordinary.
The door to
the Kaiba Mansion swings open for me before I even get my hand poised to knock,
and Seto himself greets me. He grabs my arm and pulls me inside, only to slam
the door shut and push me up against it. His right hand caresses my neck as he
leans in to give me a kiss on the lips.
“Seto!” I
gasp.
“Let’s go
into the living room,” whispers Seto pulling me by my shirt collar.
I follow
Seto into the living room and sit down on the couch beside him as he pulls me
into his arms. “If I didn’t know any better, I would say that you missed me.”
Seto holds
me close to him, and for once, I don’t even think to complain about someone
being so close. “I was worried about you. I thought something had happened! My
bodyguards were looking for you, and even they couldn’t find you!”
“You… you…
you were worried about me?” I look at Seto with wide eyes. “Why? Why would you
be worried about me? Why would you send people out to find me?”
“I should
think it rather obvious why I would do so much to get you back to me safely,”
says Seto stroking my hair. He looks at me with conflicting feelings. There is
desire in his eyes… desire for me, a longing so strong that just to see it
there makes me shudder in anticipation of what he might do to satisfy that
desire.
Yet once
again, I see that emotion flickering in his eyes, and I can’t help but wish
that he would voice it just once so that I might know what emotion it is.
Spurned on by the emotions within those eyes, I press myself further up against
Seto. I don’t even care right now if he discovers my secret through our
closeness. All I can think about is his taste. In a flash, I press my lips up
against Seto’s and pry at his lips with my tongue.
Seto closes
his eyes and opens his mouth for me. His arms hold me tightly, but they carry
with them a sense of tenderness.
I close my
eyes and kiss Seto, slipping my tongue into his mouth and backing the kiss with
all of the emotions I keep locked away inside.
Seto moans
and strokes my back. He responds eagerly to my kiss, but he doesn’t fight back
against me.
I pull away
from Seto’s lips and pant heavily.
Seto takes
a deep breath before pulling me back to his lips again. This time, when he
kisses me, I can feel his passion and fire burning into me. He wants me. He
tells me so through his kiss.
I pull away
from Seto’s kiss completely breathless and blushing bright red.
Seto pants
heavily to replenish his own lost breath. “You cannot kiss me like that and
still tell me that you aren’t gay!”
“You still
don’t understand,” I whisper burying my face in his chest.
“Are you
just using me, puppy?” asks Seto quietly.
I pull
completely away from Seto and glare into his eyes. “What did you just say?”
“Are you
using me to get what you want?” asks Seto glaring back at me.
“What the
hell kind of manipulating bastard do you take me for?” I stand up and walk away
from the couch. I spin around to stare at him once more. “You just don’t
understand! I care for you! I truly do! You might even be able to call it love,
but the fact still remains that… I’m not using you. I would never intentionally
do that to you! Seto… I… I care for you so much. I would never use you!”
Seto stands
and walks towards me. “Tell me you love me. Tell me that you want to be with me
the way I want to be with you.”
I blush.
“Do you love me?”
Seto smiles
at me and opens his mouth to speak.
“Say my
name. If you know me, and you love me, then say my name,” I say quickly before
Seto has a chance to say a word.
“You are my
puppy, Joey Wheeler,” says Seto.
I turn my
eyes away from Seto. “So you don’t love me…”
“That is
your name. Joey Wheeler,” says Seto, “Short for Joseph Wheeler.”
I sigh.
“What did
you want me to say?” asks Seto.
I look back
up into Seto’s extremely confused blue eyes. I step forward and kiss him
gently. “I suppose I wanted you to perform a miracle. I wanted you to know what
you could not possibly know. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come here.”
Seto grabs
my shoulders and holds me in place so I don’t move away from him.
“Just
once…” I start to sob and I hide my face in Seto’s shoulder. “Just once I would
like for someone to know the real me and treat me that way!”
“Let me
know you, puppy. Let me be the person to know the real you!” exclaims Seto,
“Joey… I love…”
“You love
her,” I hiss pulling away from Seto, “Everyone’s always loved my sister! I’d
better leave now. I’ll see you tomorrow at your tournament, I’m sure!”
Seto
watches in shock as I run away from him and out of the living room. “Joey,
wait!”
I don’t
stop. I rush past Mokuba on my way to the front door, and I head out of the
mansion. I run down the driveway and keep going. I see the rain clouds before I
hear the first sound of thunder. I slow down to a walk once I’m well away from
the Kaiba mansion. I start to strut as I move down the street, and I sing, “I
see dark clouds out my window. I know the storm is coming any minute, and the
thunder just confirms my fears!”
The sound
of thunder echoes all around me.
I know that
soon no one will be able to hear me singing, and when that happens, no one will
notice if I’m crying or not. “And I know the tears are in there. I’ll be
crying, unable to stop.”
The rain
starts to fall rapidly.
“Look here
comes the very first drop!” I sing, “Cause every time it rains, I fall to
pieces. So many memories the rain releases. I feel you… I taste you.” My mind
flashes back to the kisses I shared with Seto just moments before. “I cannot
forget. Every time it rains… I get wet!”
The water
falls into my eyes to blind me from the person following me.
“Darling I
am still in love with you. As time passes by it just intensifies. I know I’ll
never be with you again. I’ll never find another with that kindness in his
eyes. I’ll be trying unable to stop. Look here comes the very first drop!” I
sing, “Cause every time it rains, I fall to pieces. So many memories the rain
releases. I feel you… I taste you. I cannot forget. Every time it rains… I get
wet!”
People pass
me by without a second glance to my face, but very few miss the glance to my
butt.
“On sunny days
I’m all right. I walk in the light, and I try not to think about the love I
live without!” I hear footsteps following me as I round a corner, and I look
behind me. I turn back around when I don’t see anyone. I shrug to myself and
keep walking, but I have a feeling that someone’s following me.
A
raven-haired boy follows me down the street.
“But every
time it rains, I fall to pieces. So many memories the rain releases. I feel
you… I taste you. I cannot forget. Every time it rains… I get wet!” I sing, “Cause
every time it rains, I fall to pieces. So many memories the rain releases. I
feel you… I taste you. I cannot forget. Every time it rains… I get wet!”
The boy
follows me to the back door to Selene’s.
I stop and
run my hands over my hair to press it down. “Cause every time it rains, I fall
to pieces. So many memories the rain releases. I feel you… I taste you. I
cannot forget. Every time it rains… I get wet!”
The pouring
rain drenches me to the bone.
I take a
deep breath as I run my hands through my hair again to mess it up. I move up to
the door and knock. I smile weakly at Hourglass when he lets me in.
“I thought
that you would be staying with a friend tonight,” says Hourglass.
“I was
hoping that I would,” I say taking a deep breath to stop my tears, “but… I
couldn’t ask him. He asked me if I love him, and I couldn’t tell him yes
because he doesn’t love me for me.”
“Jono…”
Hourglass growls when he hears the knock on the door. He looks outside. “What
do you want?”
“I want to
talk to Joey!” comes Mokuba’s voice through the door.
My eyes
widen. I wipe the tears from my face quickly. “Let him in, Hourglass!”
“What?
That’s Little CEO!” exclaims Hourglass looking at me as if I’m insane.
“He
followed me here. He knows me,” I say quietly so that only Hourglass will be
able to hear me, “He was the friend… well, actually, he’s the brother of the
friend I was going to stay with. Little CEO and Big Bad CEO are banned from
here because I’m in love with Big Bad CEO.”
“I hope you
know what you’re doing,” says Hourglass opening the door.
Mokuba
stands in the doorway beneath an umbrella and glaring at me fiercely.
“Come on
in, Mokuba. We’ll find a quiet place to talk,” I say waving him in.
Mokuba
walks inside and closes his umbrella.
“I’ll take
that,” says Hourglass snatching the umbrella from Mokuba and placing it in an
umbrella stand behind the door.
I take
Mokuba’s hand and pull him to my dressing room. I close the door behind us and
lock it.
