Summary: Seto needs a new Administrative Liason. As a publicity stunt Kaiba Corp holds a kind of The Apprentice meets Joe Millionaire contest. Jou wants that job. With the help of a fairy god ‘Auntie’ with a tarnished halo, he enters the contest. This is that tale. Jou waited until Gian and the girls were in bed before he slipped into his private shower. He scrubbed the makeup and powders from his body with glee. He hadn’t been able to be himself in so long he was losing sight of who he was. He didn’t know how Gian did it and he wasn’t sure he wanted to know. Being the quiet and demure Joie - the complete antithesis of Jounouchi - was harder than anything he’d ever experienced. He needed to just be himself for a while. He dried off roughly and stared at his face relieved to see himself and not the delicate Joie staring back at him. Careful to remove all the pins he detached the fake blond bun from his hair. He cursed his luck when he realized he had didn’t have guy underwear. He couldn’t wear his favorite jeans without something under them because of a small hole next to the zipper. Resigned he slid on a pair of white cotton, lace-trimmed panties, dressed quietly in his ‘male’ clothes and slipped from the room. For the first time in weeks he could walk with his normal swagger and feel the rub of his jeans against his skin. His deck was in his pocket and he was in Kaibaland, a twenty-four hour dueling paradise. Jounouchi Katsuya was going to kick some serious ass tonight before he had to become the perfect Kawai Joie in the morning. Half past midnight Seto closed his e-mail and opened the duelist monitoring program he’d designed to track the games of all players. He had an idea of starting a gaming academy at some point in the future and wanted to track the best players. He sorted the players of the last twenty four hours by rank, if any, and by score. He was surprised to see Jounouchi Katsuya’s name pop to the top of the list. He was ranked number two of course, so he would show, but from the time of the games and the location, Jounouchi was in the park right now playing his fourth game. Wins all of them. And he was broadcasting an open challenge. Several late night patrons were responding. Without a thought he stood and slipped on his shoes. Jounouchi was in the park and Seto wanted to talk to him, if for no other reason than to give him hell for that asinine phone call a few weeks ago. Jounouchi was right where the computer said he was, standing on the dueling podium finishing a game. In a show of light and sound the other player’s monster and life points were blown away. When the next challenger would have taken his place Kaiba shoved ahead and stepped onto the platform. The blond looked at him with an odd sort of resignation for a moment. “It figures. What do ya want Kaiba? I din’t break no rules bein’ here an’ it’s a open challenge for points, no cash.” “I didn’t say you did Mutt. I’d like to speak with you.” He glanced around at the whispering crowds. He knew what they were thinking, saying. Were Kaiba Seto and Jounouchi Katsuya going to battle? He could almost feel their anticipation. “Privately.” “Yeah well I’ve had enough of yer private conversations. I’m here ta duel so either duel or move it Kaiba.” “Have it your way Mutt.” With a sigh he pulled out his always handy deck. “But if I win you have to talk to me privately.” “Yeah whatevah. Yer not gonna so it don’t mattah.” Seto smirked and signaled for the duel to begin. The idiot was in for a shock. He’d noticed that Jounouchi had been improving and starting to anticipate his strategies so he’d devised a whole new way to destroy him. This would be the blond’s first taste. It took almost twenty minutes but finally the golden head bowed with defeat. He stepped from the platform amid the applause and whistles of appreciation and met the blond as he trudged down the steps. Golden eyes spat angrily at him for a moment before lowering to focus on his shoes. “Good game Kaiba.” The blond grumbled. “Thank you.” Never let it be said he couldn’t be courteous or gracious in victory. “Let’s go.” “Go? Huh?” “The deal was if I defeat you, we would talk privately.” “Oh yeah, I forgot.” Seto didn’t believe that for a second. He’d probably hoped Seto had forgotten. No such luck. “Nice try. I’m staying at the Empire. We can go there.” As they walked along the neon lit pathways Seto couldn’t help asking, “What are you doing here?” “Should be obvious, dueling.” “Yes but there are closer places to your home than here.” “I felt like a change.” Jou shrugged noncommittally. “I see.” They walked in silence for a few minutes before Jou asked, “So why are ya here? I thought ya’d be in Domino or th’ states.” They entered the quiet lobby and crossed to the elevators. “I’m paying penance for my loss of control.” Wry humor, rarely seen, curved the CEO’s lips. “After the debacle in the newspaper I needed to do damage control to my image. It seems I offended people.” Jou laughed quietly and shook his head. “Yeah I’d say. Mostly her though. An’ I read what she was like so I can’t say I blame ya. But I didn’t think ya cared about what people think.” Seto opened his door and stepped back to allow the blond to move into the suite of his own power. “I personally don’t care but my personal life reflects on my business. I have to maintain appearances that bolster a wholesome image. It’s all about perception of the image and maintaining the illusion.” “Man, it sucks ta be you.” Jou flopped on the couch and leaned his head back on the cushions wearily. “What did ya want ta talk about Kaiba?” Sitting on the other end of the couch Seto turned to watch the blond carefully. “You called me a few weeks ago.” “Yeah, I know. You hung up on me. So I had my answer. No big deal.” Jou shrugged and focused on the floor again. Seto found it as annoying in Jou as he did in Joie. “I did not hang up on you. You disconn...” Jou’s eyes flashed up for a second, showing vulnerability and pain, halting his words, but the eyes dropped again, hiding his emotions. “You called and asked if I’d rather kiss you than her.” He tilted his head slightly and leaned towards the seemingly frozen blond. “I can honestly say I’d rather kiss you than her. Were you offering or were you taunting?” “I...uh...err...” Jou couldn’t form a single sentence. This could not be happening. Seto’d hit on Joie just a few hours before and now he was ...was...soft warm lips brushed his, asking permission...was kissing him...Kaiba Seto was kissing him. All of the heat from earlier boiled up, making his body arch, bowing into the light kiss and his lips part, begging for deeper contact. “Jou...” The deep voice rumbled against his lips, into his mouth as the kiss deepened and their tongues met, twining together, teasing, and stroking. “Mmmhmmm...” Almost afraid to touch in case this was a beautiful dream he ran his hands into Seto’s suit jacket, caressing the slim, muscular torso with shaking hands. “Jou is this another invitation?” A long elegant hand skimmed down his body to cup his growing erection. “Do you want more than kisses?” Breathless and aching, the blond groaned and arched into the touch. “I want...” He closed his eyes and arched into Seto. “Everything.” He breathed softly. The warmth of Seto’s touch and body moved away. The golden eyes opened in protest. Seto smiled down into the passion bright eyes. “Not here. My room is this way.” He turned and walked into one of the doors leaving Jou with one more chance to change his mind. The blond didn’t hesitate a second. He stood and followed into the darkened bedroom. Seto was waiting just inside the door. Warm arms circled Jounouchi’s waist and pulled him into a tight embrace. “You won’t regret it.” Jou turned and wrapped his arms around the taller man’s neck. “Oh yeah, I will. But I won’t ever be ashamed or apologize for it.” He slipped the jacket down Seto’s arms. “We’re overdressed.” “Hmmm... For once I agree with you.” He let the jacket fall and lifted Jou’s shirt over his head. “But it’s easily fixed.” “Yeah it is. I hope ya don’t like this shirt Kaiba.” Was the only warning Seto got before Jou gripped both ends and ripped, sending buttons flying and shreds of cloth everywhere. “What if I’d liked it?” The low purring of his voice as Jou leaned forward to nibble and suck on his chest, sucking and licking a nipple teasingly, spoiled his question. “Oh I think yer gonna like what we do better then any ol’ shirt.” A breathless laugh that changed to a moan as Jou unbuttoned his slacks and slipped his hand down to cradle his aching hardness. “Ah fuck.” “Yeah that. So...are ya gonna stand there or ya gettin’ undressed.” The blonde stepped back kicked off his shoes and stripped down his pants. Smiling at the impatient demand, he flipped on a side light before stripping. His avid gaze took in every detail of the blond sprawled across his bed. “Hmmm... white lace? Nice choice.” Dark color covered the blond from head to toe. Seto didn’t’ know if it was because of the lacy panties or passion rising because his body was finally bared to the luminous golden gaze. He hoped it was the latter because he found the lace charming. He crawled onto the bed and blanketed the smaller man. Eager for the taste of Jou’s golden skin he ran his lips down the slim torso, nibbling and licking as he went. Playfully he worried the lace band between his teeth. “I hate foreplay. It’s for virgins, women who want to be convinced, and men who need time to get it up. But if you need it I’ll try.” He scraped his teeth down, tugging the lace panties out of the way until Jou’s neatly trimmed thatch of dark blond hair and jutting cock were bare to his gaze. “I...” Jou had been going to ask him to slow down just a little. He wanted this to last more than five minutes and the way he was feeling it wasn’t going to. His protest was lost in a howl as Seto surrounded his shaft in soft wet suction. “Ah Kami tha’s...oh...” Instinctively he grabbed the brunet hair with tight fists, pressing deeper into the tight warmth. “Ah...” He thrashed and pumped harder, trying to get deeper as release hovered just out of reach. Seto was relieved that Jou was so ready and responsive. He didn’t think he would have survived a long session of foreplay. He hadn’t had sex in a while and he’d wanted Jou for so long that his body would have exploded if he’d had to take a lot of time to prepare the blond. He could feel Jou’s cock swelling with impending climax, filling his already stretched mouth and he deliberately clamped down, flicking his tongue along the sensitive ridge. That small caress sent Jou over the edge and with a scream that made Seto glad he’d soundproofed the walls; his throat and mouth were filled with the blond’s savory flow. After a minute of swallow and recovery time Seto slid up the sweat-slick body. “Hmmm... put your legs on my shoulders Jou.” Limp, relaxed, and totally dazed, Jou lifted his legs as high as he could. Seto pushed them uncomfortably higher and settled them on his shoulders as he braced on his arms above Jou. Below, where he was held up and open Jou felt a hot searching probe. “Wha...ha....t...Seto wait...” But it was too late; the probing shaft had found his vulnerable opening and was pressing past the natural resistance. “Ow...ouch...Seto stoo...unghhhh...no...” Tears stung his eyes at the pain. He didn’t’ care if it wasn’t manly, it fucking hurt. No lube, no prep at all, just hard pressure, and fullness stretching him painfully, tearing him. “It’s all right now Jou. It’ll get better.” He bent to capture the tears that were falling. “You have to relax a little though. Just relax and it will be okay.” Through gritted teeth Jou snapped “How th’ fuck am I supposed ta do that Kaiba? Ya got yer damn telephone pole shoved up my ass.” “I know my size is a problem but if you try to relax like you normally would...” “Normally? Fuck, there is nothing normal about this for me. I ain’t never taken it up the ass for nobody before ya jerk. Do ya think I’m some kinda slut?” The question made the usually impervious CEO flinch. He’d thought Jou experienced. His casual approach and acceptance had fostered that belief. He’d treated Jou as someone who knew his way around. He’d screwed this up in a big way. The enormity of his mistake killed his passion faster than anything else could have. He withdrew his wilting cock from the Jou’s abraded body and rolled off of him. “Jou, you should have told me.” “Why?” Jou couldn’t see where it would make a difference. If that was man-fuckin’ he didn’t want any part of it. He wasn’t straight and now he was sure he wasn’t ever going to try another man. He was cured from ever wanting it again. “Because...” Seto sighed and slid out of bed. As he crossed to the bathroom he tried to explain. “Because sex between men who have experience is not the same kind of sex one has with an inexperienced person. Nerves and lack of familiarity of the act can make it painful and embarrassing. I avoid virgins because of it.” He wet a few towels and carried them back in to Jou. Without asking permission he began to wash the droplets of blood from the Jou’s opening and crack. He was relieve that the blood was from a superficial tear and had already stopped flowing. “Hey!” “Shut up. If you had told me this could have been avoided. Your pain and embarrassment are your own fault. Deal with it.” Was the heartless reply. Jou lay in silence and let Seto take care of him. He’d never admit it but he was enjoying Seto’s touch. When Seto came back from returning the towels to the bathroom, the blond was surprised when the brunet lay down and pulled him onto his chest. Surprised, but he didn’t complain. He was feeling warm and oddly content despite his disappointing sexual encounter. He was just dozing when Seto asked softly “Why?” “Why? Why what?” Abruptly Jou was wide awake. “You aren’t that dumb. Why did you call me? Why did you come with me tonight? And mostly why did you agree to have sex with me?” “Oh, those whys. Look...can’t ya just let it go? I... the answers are just too embarrassin’. Besides I don’t see why ya’d care. I mean it’s not like we’re ever gonna do this again.” “We aren’t? It might surprise you, but I don’t do one night stands. I have every intention of seeing you again, and that includes having sex with you.” “Kami no!” Jou couldn’t keep the horror he thought at the idea out of his voice. “No offence Kaiba but no way, ain’t happenin’. I just don’t think I’m cut out for sex. I mean I don’t like it with girls and now I know I don’t like it with guys. So...uhm...no. No thank you.” Then inspiration struck. “Besides ya can’t have me for a lover or whatever. I already told ya I won’t be ashamed or say sorry. That means I won’t hide it...if I’m with ya I would be with ya, not hidden away. Havin’ me around would shatter the image.” “Hnnn...” Seto didn’t want to agree but he couldn’t fight the logic either so he put it away for later and did what he could for now. He rolled atop the blond and nuzzled into his soft hair. “What do ya think yer doin’? I told ya no more of that stuff.” He silenced Jou’s protesting mouth with a deep kiss that only ended when Jou’s arms were clinging to him tightly. “There’s an old saying that a man is like a floor. If you lay him right the first time you can walk on him for years.” He strung kisses down Jou’s neck, pausing to suck lightly on the heavily beating pulse. “Ya...ya ain’t walkin’ on me Kaiba.” Jou managed to rasp even as he bowed into the spine tingling kisses. “No, I’m laying you right so I can ride you for years.” He buried his smile against the arching body as he set about seducing his semi-virgin lover. It occurred to him four hours and six orgasms later that he really didn’t hate foreplay at all. Jou felt Seto settle heavily beside him and knew that he was sound asleep. The sun was just beginning to rise filling the room with a soft glow. Stealthily he slipped out of bed and hunted for his clothes. After hurriedly dressing he tiptoed out of the bedroom and crept to the door. On impulse he stopped and scribbled a quick note. Seto; Tile or wood, I still am not ashamed and I won’t say I’m sorry. When you can say the same call me.” Love Jou He left it sitting on the table next to Seto’s laptop. With one last look around, he slipped out the door and walked silently down the hall. He opened the door just wide enough to slide through and tiptoed to his room. His heart, lungs, and just about every other major organ dropped to his feet when he saw Gian sitting on his bed reading a book. He expected rage, anger, even disappointment. What he got was his friend opening his arms in a wordless offer of comfort. Pain he hadn’t known he was suppressing exploded through him, tearing at his heart, making tears rain from his eyes. “Gian...” He choked miserably and flung himself into that comfort. He sobbed, he wailed and he whimpered, and it was all muffled into the strong shoulder of his friend. When he’d calmed he leaned away and looked at his mentor with eyes pleading for absolution. “I know...it’s all right. I knew when he tried to get you alone that you’d find a way to be with him. I know love Jou and I know its cost.” Gian smiled crookedly. “From your attire I’d say that Kaiba Seto and Jounouchi Katsuya are now ‘intimate rivals?’” “Yeah. No...it’s not...” He dragged his hands through his hair. “It’s not like that. He...he has to maintain appearances and can’t be with me openly. Even I know that. But...but...he was so tender and loving at least after the first time. He wants to be with me long term, but I know that can’t be right because I ain’t th’ type ta stay hidden. I told him I won’t say sorry and I won’t be ashamed an’ I meant it. I ain’t some low class nothin’.” “No... No you’re not. But what you are is going to be late for work if we don’t get started dressing.” Gian brushed back the love tumbled blond hair tenderly. “It’s time for Jou to go back into hiding and Joie to take over.” “About that. I think it’s a mistake to keep this up. I mean...” “Don’t you still want to prove you’re worth something?” “Well yeah but...” “I understand but you still have your goals. You can’t let them be changed by this.” Gian stopped as if struck by something. “But you must remember to keep your eyes averted. The knowledge you have of him, of love, will show clearly. You mustn’t let him guess or he will think you played him for a fool.” “I’d already kinda figured that out. I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I’ll try. Yer right I started this to show him I’m worth more than just some mutt, and it’s even more important now.” Jou nodded briskly and stood up. With a low groan he grabbed his hips. “Aunt Gian do you know how to get rid of this backache?” “I’ll lay out the Preparation H and Tylenol while you shower Joie. Oh and no heels today; your hips will be unreliable.” ********** Seto woke to bright mid-morning sunlight streaming through his window. Automatically he reached for Jou. He frowned as his hand met cold sheets instead of warm golden skin. He listened for sounds in the suite trying to pinpoint where his lover had gotten to. When no noises met his ears he slid out of bed and padded into the main room. The out-of-place paper beside his laptop caught his eye immediately. He read the missive twice to be sure he understood. His lips curved into a smile even as pain pierced him. Jou had left him. No, not him, Seto decided. Left the ‘image.’ He was leaving it up to Seto to choose. Of course there was no choice at all. He’d never had one. But he was never a person to accept fate or luck. He made his own destiny and shaped his world. He had been content to allow society and the empty minded fools shape his life into an illusion. Now it was time for him to take control. Joie was baffled and relieved when Kaiba’s secretary called and informed her that ‘Kaiba-sama has had several issues arise. He will be unable to host his guests. Please ask Kajuki-san to care for them the best she can.” She was too busy with the constant stream of requests her guests made to ponder it for more that the few minutes she could stay awake in bed though. This job was by far the hardest thing she’d ever worked at. She had to juggle six different schedules, special meals and treats, and arrange for everything from travel to attraction tickets. She managed without a single mistake until the final night. Two minutes before eight and blessed freedom her Blackberry chimed. She smiled when she saw the name. The Chou family - father, sons, and daughter. Their suite was actually just around the corner from the suite she was staying in. So far they had been trouble free with few requests. It seemed they were enjoying themselves and hadn’t needed much of his services. Anticipating a small request Joie called their number. “This is Kawai Joie, how may I help you.” “This is Chou Naoko, could you please come to our room? I would like a few moments of your time.” “Of course Chou-san. I will be there in just a moment.” The elevator she was riding on ‘dinged’ as she disconnected. Chou-san’s charming daughter opened the door before she could knock. “Hi Joie!” She greeted exuberantly. “Daddy’s mad so you might wanna watch out okay?” “Okay.” Joie agreed as concern filled her. Chou-san angry? About what? She stepped into the main room the older man nodded curtly. “Please come in. I would like to ask you a few questions please.” “Certainly.” She stepped further into the room, stopping short of the large comfortable looking couch. “How familiar are you with the other candidates?” “Not very.” She admitted softly. “After the first day Kaiba-sama gave my aunt a temporary position chaperoning two girls who won a duel contest. We have been staying here with them in their room.” “I see.” Disappointment showed clearly in the dark eyes, then a spark of curiosity. “Why would he ask your aunt? Does he know you both outside the business?” Joie flushed slightly and dropped her gaze. “It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. My aunt was greatly upset by a harassing encounter with another guest. Kaiba-sama was kindness itself to think of this way to protect her while allowing me to continue with the interview process.” “Harassing encounter? Daddy what does that mean?” The curious little girl piped up. “Somebody was mean to her in a way that made her cry.” “Oh.” The child screwed up her face thoughtfully. “Why would someone do that?” Joie smiled sadly at the innocence that would not last. “Because men are not always kind or respectful of beautiful women. My aunt is one of the most beautiful in the world.” “Why not?” Joie looked helplessly at the girl’s father. He shrugged. Joie started it now she could finish it. “I don’t know.” The blond said simply. “Oh. Well can I meet your aunt? I want to see how she compares to the most beautiful woman in the world.” “I don’t know if there is time. Tonight is our last night here. After the meeting tomorrow morning she and I will be departing for home or our next destination.” “Well since I need a baby-sitter tonight why can’t I come with you now? Dad’s going to go see Kaiba-san to try to find Gina and my brothers have dates so...” Joie chuckled and opened her PDA. “Do you need a sitter tonight Chou-san?” “Yes. I have an appointment with Kaiba-san. I am looking for a candidate, possibly a family member of one of the candidates. I saw her briefly when we stayed at the other hotel but she had vanished by the time I was able to search for her. Several remembered her but none knew where she’d gone.” “Yeah and Daddy has been looking for her forever. Since before my brothers were born.” The little girl bounced excitedly. “Tell her about Gina, Daddy.” “Sweetheart I don’t think she’s interested. Have you found a sitter?” “The soonest one is available is an hour.” Joie smiled. “Let me call her.” Joie made the arrangements and hung up the phone. “There you are Chou-san; your sitter will be here between nine and nine fifteen.” “I see. And you will watch her until then? I must leave for my appointment with Kaiba-san. He does not tolerate tardiness.” Suppressing a sigh Joie nodded. “I will, but do you mind if I take her to my rooms? My aunt and her two charges are waiting for me. We are sharing a last meal together. They will leave before breakfast tomorrow.” “Not at all. I know this is after duty hours for you. I appreciate your efforts. My appreciation will show on my score card.” Joie bowed low. “Thank you very much Chou-san.” With a smile he waved them on as he stopped to slide on his suit jacket. Gina gripped Joie’s hand tight and dragged her along the corridor. “What suite number?” “9669.” “Hooo my brothers were talking about that number.” The little girl laughed then pouted. “Don’t know what they meant but my daddy told them to shut up when I asked.” “They should not have been making comments that are inappropriate with you around.” Joie opened the door and motioned the girl inside. “Here we go, home sweet home. At least for an hour.” Gina was enveloped in a world she’d never imagined before. Soft feminine laughter came from a bedroom, perfume and makeup scented the air, and decorating the backs of the chairs and couches were colorful silk scarves and other female clothes she had seen but never been around. She was instantly entranced. “Wow...it’s so pretty here.” She picked up a delicate pink scrap of fabric and ran it through her curious fingers. “This is much nicer than my brother’s smelly socks.” “Joie is that you? Come see our girls now. We are all ready for the ball!” Gian’s voice called gaily and another cascade of giggles followed. Joie smiled and glanced down at her small companion. But the girl was already running towards the room where Gian’s voice had come. “Aunt Gian we have a small visitor. She will be staying about an hour...” The blonde’s voice ground to a halt at the suddenly stricken look on his mentor’s face and the crow of triumph from the little girl. “Gina! I found you again!” The girl dashed over and grabbed the stricken woman’s hand. “Come on, we have to catch Daddy!” Joie didn’t understand what was going on but she did understand that Gian was in pain. Using tones that she’d only heard Gian use while correcting a gross stupidity she clipped out “That is enough Gina. Leave my aunt alone. Girls if you would please come with me into the front room?” Gina gave up her futile tugging and snarled “Fine I’ll go get daddy.” She whirled and dashed out of the bedroom. Before anyone could move to stop her they heard the front door flung open. “Daddy!” But Gina was too late. The elevator doors were closing on her father. The last thing she saw was his hasty effort to wave. Desperate she started after him only to be brought up short by a firm grip on her shoulder. “That is enough now. Please come into the room and behave sensibly.” “But I need to tell Daddy that I found Gina again.” She argued as she was led back. “Not now you don’t. Right now we are going for dinner.” Gian, pale but composed, stood beside two pretty girls dressed in their party finery. She had put all of her efforts in the last week into giving them a sense of pride and worth, showing them how to wear makeup and clothes appropriately. Their smooth, confident appearance was a mark of her tutoring and up until the child had walked in she had been happy. Now all Gian could feel was sickness churning in her gut. She doubted she could eat a bite. However, the show must go on. She couldn’t let the pain she was feeling show. The girls had earned a fairytale night out. Neither Chou nor his daughter would ruin it for them. “Are we ready ladies?” Then she realized Joie hadn’t changed. “Well obviously not all Cinderellas are ready for the ball. Joie our reservation is in fifteen minutes. We will order drinks and look divine while you baby sit. Join us when you can. We will wait dinner on you.” Gian didn’t glance at the child as she moved to the door. Confused, her two charges followed. The little girl stepped forward and grabbed her arm. “Wait, please? I...Just talk to me a little while? I...my Daddy tells us so much about you that I...I just wanna talk to you please?” Wide eyes, innocent and sad, begged as tears gathered. “Please.” Agony and confusion ripped through Gian. She couldn’t stay, couldn’t face the sting of knowing this child, but she couldn’t ignore the pain and need in the hauntingly beautiful dark eyes. “I...” her throat worked as she swallowed down a lump. “All right. We can stay for a few minutes.” “Gian...” Joie breathed as she recognized the torment that flickered in her dark eyes. “Don’t...” “What more harm can it do Joie? None to me, but it will harm an innocent if I leave.” A gentle hand stroked the mussed dark hair of the ‘innocent.’ “Well if we’re staying I’m going to try on another outfit. Too much drama here.” “Yeah, me too.” The two girls bolted back into the bedroom and shut the door. Gian moved gracefully to a chair. “Go dress Joie, I will entertain our guest.” “I...Are you sure?” “I am sure. As I said, what harm could come to me now.” Uneasily the blonde nodded. “All right.” She walked into her room and closed the door. “So, child, you wanted to speak to me?” “Yes! My daddy does too. He’s been looking for you for years. Since before my brothers were born.” “Really? Why would he do such a thing? He was married to your mother by then.” “Yes, but it wasn’t like they were really married. That would have been gross. At least that’s what my brothers say.” She wrinkled her nose. “I don’t know why they say that because they’re brothers and they kiss all the time. So why should Daddy being married to his sister be gross to them?” Gian gasped and sat back. She didn’t know which revelation to deal with first. The kissing brothers or Chou being married to his sister. Before she could do more than stare, the little girl shrugged and continued. “Mom was illeg...ille...uh...a bastard. My grandpa had her with another mommy. Nobody knew about her until she got pregnant by a stranger. Granpa knew daddy wouldn’t give him any grandchildren so he forced Daddy to marry Mommy and give the boys the family name.” The little girl’s eyes grew fierce. “He only agreed to protect you. Grandpa was going to have you killed if Daddy didn’t agree.” “I’m sure you exaggerate child.” Gian didn’t know what to think but she wasn’t buying this overblown dramatic story one bit. The girl was too imaginative. “No. I heard them arguing about it just before Mommy and Grandpa were killed in the accident. Daddy said that the boys were old enough and he wanted out. Mommy started to cry and Grandpa said that he would still have Gina Peacock killed if he tried to divorce mommy.” The little girl shook her head slightly. “My grandpa was a bad man. He liked to hurt my brothers a lot. I think that is why they sleep in the same bed. To chase away the nightmares. The story was so bizarre and outside of anything Gian ever imagined. “Thank you for telling me.” “Will you talk to Daddy? Are you still hurt and mad?” “I am many things at the moment Gina, but none of them are directed at you. Will you be joining us for drinks and looking fabulous?” The little girl glanced down at her clothes dubiously. “Jeans and a t-shirt?” Smiling, Gian stood up and crossed to her own room. “I bought you a present for not meeting you as I had agreed. I was going to send it to you after we left. I believe it will work for this occasion.” The little girl lost her breath as Gian opened a gift box and removed a length of deep pink cotton decorated with a richly detailed pattern of flowers and streams. Tears touched her eyes. She’d always wanted a kimono. “Gina...it’s for me?” “Yes, to remind you that you are beautiful and special.” Smiling gently Gian began to dress the excited little girl in the Kimono, Obi, and matching zori shoes. Skillfully she wound the long hair into a bun and decorated it with small white flowers, and as a final touch handed her namesake a matching purse. “Now we are all ready to go to the ball. “Yes...Gina...” Impulsively the little girl hugged her. “Thank you.” “Thank you Gina. Let’s go, I’m sure they are waiting.” When they entered Joie said softly, apologetically. “Her sitter called, her customer is running late. It will be another hour and a half before she can get here. There are no other sitters available.” Gian didn’t have to fake a smile. “That’s fine Joie. I was going to suggest it. She would miss out on the party and we fabulous women must have time to enjoy it.” Their pre-dinner drinks were fruity, frothy, and as pretty as could be but they didn’t hold a candle to the five beautiful ladies sipping them. When the babysitter arrived almost two hours later to take her charge she remarked softly “Prettiest girls I’ve seen in a long time. And classy too. Little Miss, you were the belle of the ball.” “Gina gave me this. She’s going to be my new mommy. I can’t wait...” The sleepy-eyed girl blinked and looked around. “I gotta talk to daddy.” “He won’t be home until late. It’s time for you to go to bed.” “No. Buuuut..I am sleepy. Can I change into my pajamas and nap on the couch until Daddy gets home?” “Yes.” The babysitter knew that as soon as the little girl fell asleep she could carry her into her room and her charge would be none-the-wiser. It was easier to compromise than to deal with a full tantrum. The little girl fought sleep as long as she could, but eventually fell into a heavy sleep. The sitter smiled and decided to give her a few more minutes but the sound of the door opening changed her mind. She stood and bowed slightly. “Chou-san. You’re daughter tried to wait up for you, but as you can see she fell asleep. I was just going to move her into her room.” “Don’t bother. I will. Thank you and good night.” The other man was brisk and curt to the point of rudeness. Knowing the dismissal when she heard it she bowed again and left. Fighting back the frustration and anger he’d been battling since leaving Kaiba’s apartment, Naoko scooped up his little girl. She stirred slightly and mumbled “Daddy?” “Sh...go back to sleep Gina.” “Gian...Gina...Joie...9669...Daddy... Kimono...” “You can tell me in the morning sweetheart, for now just sleep.” He slipped her under the blankets and tucked them around her gently. “Sleep...” The girl fell back into a deep sleep. Moodily he sank onto the couch and stared into space. He couldn’t believe that Kaiba refused his request. Nobody had refused him anything since his father died. They held the answers, he was sure of it. Maybe not Kaiba Seto, but his staff, his records, and possibly his brother, Kaiba Mokuba. They knew the information he’d requested and turned him down on the grounds of ‘confidentiality.’ Remembering the scene made him grit his teeth in frustration. Those bastards Matashi and Aishira had looked at him with contempt and condescension; making it plain they remembered his role in the debacle fifteen years ago. “So, if we understand correctly, you believe that an old friend of yours is a candidate, or the family of a candidate, and you want to look at their files?” Matashi had asked, even though he’d been clear enough in his request. “Yes.” “Chou-san, you are familiar to me. Weren’t you in the newspapers some time ago?” Aishira asked softly. “My father and wife died in a car accident not long ago.” “Of course we are sorry to hear of your loss. But that is not what I was thinking of. About fifteen years ago weren’t you involved in the Gina Peacock scandal?” When the older man nodded Aishira shrugged “And now you want us to help you look for a woman named Gina. What a coincidence.” “Many women are named Gina. I want to find my old friend more than anything else. May I look at the records?” He appealed directly to Kaiba Seto. Seto started as if he had been far way. It took several seconds before the tall brunet answered. “I trust my brother and my team on this. I agree with their decisions.” The young man turned back to the window and lost himself in the stars again. Kaiba Mokuba stared at his brother with obvious concern before turning his attention back to himself. “Chou-san, I am sorry but we must deny your request at this time. We will not give away anyone’s confidential information.” Chou knew a brick wall when he ran into one. He bowed and thanked them for their time. The drive back wasn’t long enough to quell his temper and frustration. He doubted anything but finding Gina ever would. Closing his eyes he sank back and lost himself in the memory of their last night together. He never knew when he crossed over from day dreaming to sleeping. He didn’t hear his sons slip through the door, nor did he hear the soft snick as their bedroom door closed and the low groans that sounded from behind the door. ********** Joie sat nervously in the large conference room. She tried not to notice that what had started out to be a hundred candidates had dropped to almost half. She knew it increased her odds of advancing but at the same time it saddened her to think that so many had given up. She jerked her attention back to the podium as Mokuba stepped up to the microphone. “Welcome to those of you who chose to stay. I want to thank you all for staying. Several of you have made very good impressions on the staff and guests here and even though you may not be selected to continue with the interview process I invite you to apply to the manager here. Because of the decrease in numbers we will only be selecting the top thirty to continue rather than the top fifty.” He opened his laptop and made a quick movement with the mouse. “If you will all turn on your Blackberry’s one more time you will see a text page from me. It will have a number. That is your ranking in customer satisfaction. Their comments also affected your scores. If your ranking is between numbers one and thirty you have been selected to continue. Please report to the Kaiba Manor in Domino tomorrow between eleven and twelve in the morning. Bring an overnight case and formal clothes.” Mokuba closed his laptop and stowed it in his bag. “Please keep the Blackberrys as our gifts to you for all of your excellent service.” He left the podium and turned to go. In the background he could hear several women discussing their numbers. Some with excitement and some with disappointment. A particularly harsh voice caught his attention. “Kawai Joie. What number did you get?” The soft, cultured voice answered, “I don’t know yet. I want to wait and look with my aunt.” “No need to look is there?” The voice sneered. “Kaiba himself moved you into the Empire’s premiere suites. He even stayed at the Empire for a night. Did he rate you on the satisfaction you gave him?” Joie’s face burned bright red and she took a step back. “Where did you hear this?” “I heard the maids discussing the move of you and your aunt into that suite. And they talked about how messy Kaiba-sama’s bed was the next morning.” “You jealous cat.” It was the woman who Joie had helped with the Blackberry at the beginning of the week. “You’re just mad because you didn’t make it so you have to hurt someone who did.” “You don’t know anything so shut your stupid mouth. I made it. I’m number twenty five.” The snarling woman showed the text as proof. “I’m just letting her know it doesn’t matter if she fucked him or not, I’m getting the job. He’d never hire a slut who spread her legs to get it.” A deft hand snatched the waving Blackberry. Mokuba stepped forward and glared daggers at the obnoxious woman. “You owe Kawai-san and everyone else here an apology. She does not owe you any explanations but I will explain for her. All of your movements were tracked with the Blackberry’s. The one night my brother spent at the hotel she was in her room by nine and didn’t leave it all night. My brother dueled Jounouchi Katsuya until almost one in the morning. It is all a matter of record.” The woman paled. It was her turn to take a step back. “I...I...” She reached for the PDA. Mokuba ignored the movement and turned to the woman who had defended Joie. He recognized her as one of the low scoring candidates. She had been a dilemma because she had received glowing reviews on her kindness and caring. All of her guests had recommended she be moved to the next round. Her low scores were caused only by a lack of familiarity with the technology. Smiling he held out his hand. “Your Blackberry?” The woman bit her lip and gave up the gadget that had caused her several headaches. She blinked and almost dropped the one he handed her to replace the one he’d requested. “See you at Kaiba Manor tomorrow.” He winked and tossed over his shoulder as he strolled away. “We appreciate loyalty at Kaiba Corporation as much as we appreciate technological skills.” Gian had the car packed and idling when Joie left the building. “Well? Don’t keep me in suspense.” The older queen demanded as she waited for Joie to buckle her seatbelt. “I don’t know yet. Mokuba sent it via email. I haven’t looked because I wanted to be with you when I...” She flipped the unit on and read the single digit text. “Two. I’m going on then. Numbers one through thirty were selected. I came in second place.” Predictably Joie wondered, “Who came in first place?” Gian laughed. Joie’s naiveté was exactly what she needed to brighten the day. “You did.” “Hm? But it says two. Second place.” “It’s an old business tactic. If they told you that you came in first you would have nobody to strive to defeat.” Joie’s golden head dropped back against the car seat. “That makes sense. Knowing Seto it was probably his idea.” “Old trick, but yes, I’d have to agree. You are probably right. So what’s next?” “Next I report to the Kaiba Manor in Domino tomorrow between eleven and twelve. I am to bring an overnight bag and a formal.” “Ah, things are going to heat up. We’re getting closer now.” Joie smiled sadly. “Can’t get much closer than I’ve already been.” “Jounouchi can’t. You on the other hand, are probably a distant, fading, memory.” Gian sighed and patted her koohai’s leg. “And that’s good for you because the less he thinks of you the less likely he is to connect you to Jounouchi.” “I know.” Hiding the tears that wanted to fall the blonde turned to look at the passing scenery. “I know.” ********** Back at the hotel Gina donned her zori slippers and rushed out holding her obi. “Daddy, Daddy wake up. You have to tie my obi and then go see Gina.” Blearily Naoko sat up. “What? What did you say...?” His breath left him in a gasp as he saw what his daughter was wearing. “Where did you get that?” “Gina gave it to me last night. We had a party. Daddy she’s not mad at you anymore. I explained about Mommy and Grandpa and she said she wasn’t mad. Tie my obi daddy and let’s go see her.” He gripped his daughter tightly. “You saw her?” “Yes, she’s Joie’s Aunt. We had dinner and she gave me this kimono and stuff to say sorry for not meeting me for breakfast. Daddy...daddy where are you going? You have to tie my...” “What room are they in?” “9669, just around the corner from us. But daddy my...” But she was talking to thin air. Her father had bolted from the room. When he reached the suite he saw that two maid carts were beside the door. He knocked softly and breathed deep as the long remembered perfumes reached him. Gina...A maid stepped into the hall. “Yes sir?” “The people staying here. When will they be back?” “Sir? They are gone. The checked out over an hour ago. The new arrivals will be here in about four hours.” Gina had followed as quickly as she could in the unfamiliar shoes. She wanted to see her daddy and Gina together. She was alarmed when she saw her father’s shoulders slump. “Daddy? Where is Gina?” “Gina? I...She’s gone again. I missed her.” Really scared now she tugged her father’s hand, leading him back to their suite. It made her want to hit something when he followed like a lost puppy. *** Gian was more right than either of them could have ever guessed. Kaiba Seto could barely recall ever having met Joie much less being attracted. If anyone had reminded him of it he would have looked at him in shock and demanded to know what drugs they were taking. He wanted only one person, Jounouchi, and he was slowly developing a plan so that they could be together without ‘images.’ “Seto! Hey, Seto!” Mokuba’s impatient voice broke into his musings. “What is it Mokuba?” “The candidates will be allowed onto the estate in the next half hour. Did you want to go over the plans for tonight?” “Not really, but I suppose you will force me to listen.” His brother’s tone brought the teen up short. “Seto are you all right? You haven’t been yourself for almost a week.” “Have I ever been myself?” Seeing the concern flaring to life in his brother’s eyes he reassured. “I’m fine Mokuba just working on a new plan is all.” “Well whatever it is it must be big. You’ve been zoning out in some major meetings. You...” “Enough Mokuba. Just tell me about the candidates and what you have in store for tonight.” “Well to start with there will only be twenty-nine instead of the original fifty. They will be arriving any time for a briefing on the assignment and they will be given dossiers on our guests. Fifty specially selected people will be here for the party making the total eighty in house.” Mokuba smirked at his brother. “You’ll be glad to know that your blonde made the cut.” “My blonde? Who are you talking about?” His brother couldn’t possibly mean Jounouchi. He was not one of the interviewees. If he had been the process would have ended on the first day. He would have hired him and insisted they go everywhere together. There could be no doubt that the blond was qualified. He had a degree in business and was a Duel Monster’s champion. No one would fault him the selection. “Kawai Joie...Seto the girl who had you confused enough to talk to Peaches and Sakura at the Empire that night.” Seto couldn’t believe he’d actually forgotten the girl who reminded him so much of Jounouchi that he’d doubted his sexuality. “Oh her. She doesn’t matter any more. I have resolved that issue and I am most definitely not interested in her.” “Seto...did you and her...” “No not even close. That night you know I dueled Jounouchi.” “Yeah I know but...but...” “Dueling was the start of our night. He didn’t leave until the next morning.” Mokuba’s eye grew wide. “So you and Jou...you guys...” “We are together. Or we will be once I finish my plan to make our relationship more acceptable.” He smiled slightly. “That’s what I am working on.” The teen was stunned. Seto didn’t need their help after all. “All right, well congratulations. Back to the plan. Tonight several pieces of information will be available for the cultivation. The key players know what they are supposed to do. The fifteen finalists with the highest scores will advance to the next interview round.” Seto was staring out the window at the melee of vehicles pulling up to his house. Even through the windows he could hear the excited chatter and exclamations of some of the women. “Mokuba...score it any way you want but if any of them learns the value of holding their tongue they go to the top of the list.” “I...” He could see his brother was serious. “Okay Seto.” He nodded and dashed from the room. A flash of gold caught Seto’s eye; instinctively he turned to look, hoping Jounouchi had come to him. Disappointment filled him as the flash of gold turned out to be a familiar blonde woman dressed in a dark red suit with a white blouse and red pumps. He couldn’t help but admire the determined grace of her stride and the cool self-possession that set her apart from the hurrying hoard descending on his home. Kawai Joie, yes now he remembered her, and he cursed himself as he felt a stir of attraction. He had Jou; he didn’t want or need some woman whose sole appeal was her resemblance to Jou. As if feeling the weight of his stare the blonde woman paused and glanced up, focusing on the window. Even though he knew the glass was privacy tinted, he stepped back from the gaze. Mokuba met Matashi and Aishira outside the large formal dining room where the thirty women waited. “Are we ready?” “Of course. Twenty-nine left. Two days and our part in this will be over.” A cruel smile twisted Aishira’s normally sweet expression. “Then Seto can deal with them.” “Amen.” Mokuba sighed and opened the double doors. As a unit they stepped into the room. Instantly a hush fell.” “Ladies and gentlemen. You may remember I am Kaiba Mokuba. Aishira-san and Matashi-san are assisting with this part of the process. In front of you is an information packet. They were randomly placed and each of you selected your seating. There are three people listed with brief bios. They each will have information you want to have. Your targets are those three but any others will count in your favor as well. I need to stress that these people are completely unknowing of your goals and must stay that way. This is a test of your ability to observe and report significant information. Also, these people are friends and should stay that way. If any of you abuse or harass them you will be asked to leave immediately.” Joie opened her packet and found herself looking at three familiar faces. Pegasus, Peaches, and Croquet. She gasped slightly, bringing her hand to her throat in a gestured of concern, and turned to look at the three men at the front of the room. “Is there any problem Kawai-san?” Mokuba asked. “I...I don’t know Kaiba-san. I...Pegasus-sama was a guest at the Empire and Peaches-dono is acquainted with my Aunt Gian.” “Then you are at an advantage. Use it wisely.” Mokuba stood and bowed slightly. “We have assigned the three remaining males a room together to dress and prepare for tonight. Each of the ladies will share, three to a room. There is ample space and time for all of you to prepare. Feel free to look around the grounds, swim, and become familiar with your surroundings. Cocktails start at six with a dinner buffet at eight. If you are hungry before that time please call down to the kitchen. They may have a few snacks available.” Joie, troubled at the advantage she seemed to have, stood quietly as everyone started to file out. The woman who she defended saw her and came back. “We’ve never been introduced. You’re Kawai Joie and I am Matsu Ain.” The older woman smiled and bowed slightly. “I want this job very much Kawai-san and I believe I can do a good job for Kaiba Seto and Kaiba Corp. If any of us had gotten a packet that contained people we knew we would not have asked, nor would we have considered telling anyone. In business you must use all the advantages you can get. If you feel so strongly about it then you must ask one of them if you may trade. I will trade with you.” Joie blinked and nodded. “Thank you Matsu-san. I...I will go ask now and let you know.” “Yes, please do. I will see you later.” Joie hurried to the door where Mokuba and the other two men had disappeared. They were nowhere in sight and the corridor seemed to go on in an endless parade of doors and windows. Gamely she tried the first few doors, popping her head around when nobody answered her knock. She had just tried the fifth door and was leaving when a low voice from the next room caught her attention. “So, Peaches is attending is she? When were you going to ask her?” Aishira’s voice was low but clearly recognizable. “You know my Perfect Peach is more accepted at these things than Sakura. The women like you better. Besides I’ll get to dance with you in public. You know you’ll love it.” Matashi’s tone was slightly louder and considerably more coaxing. “That’s beside the point. I need more than a few hours notice to pull off the ‘Perfect Peach.’” Joie backed out of the room and quietly shut the door. Her first thought was disbelief that Aishira was Peaches. And his second was an equally disbelieving Matashi was Sakura. All thoughts of switching lists disappeared. She hurried away, looking for a secluded place to call her mentor. Ten minutes later she was reassured, resolved, and starving. On impulse she walked down to the kitchen and into controlled chaos. Servants moved throughout the room carrying items back and forth, cooks of varying ranks alternately cut, sliced, and prepared. Music played in a low accompanying background hum as three chefs moved in a well choreographed and timed circuit around the massive kitchen. Everything may appear chaotic, but as Joie watched she recognized the pattern and symmetry. A lot of work was getting done in a very short amount of time. She watched in awe at the organization and artistry of the perfectly timed dance. One of the chef’s, a tall, bone-thin man of about fifty years noticed her standing there. “Is there something you need?” “Well...” Joie hesitated for a second knowing if she made a request it would disrupt the flow. “Actually I’m bored and have a few hours before I need to get ready. Do you need a hand? I worked doing vegetable prep at Chez Figaro for the Tabenohai Buffet for two years working my way through college.” The cadaverously skinny man glared at Joie suspiciously for a moment then motioned him to a vegetable preparation area. A quick word with the cook already slicing and she scurried to another area. “Show me.” The chef demanded. Four other candidates had thought to learn things by volunteering to help and all four had been shown the door. Of course none of them had claimed to work at the famous Chez Figaro. If the blonde girl had acceptable skills then he could put her to use, and perhaps, just perhaps, he’d drop some very nice information her way. At the challenge Joie picked up the medium paring knife and tested it for sharpness. Satisfied she picked up a kintiki carrot. “Spirals or roll cutting?” “This is the decorative station. Spirals.” Joie nodded and set to work cutting and peeling the red carrots. After they were prepared he used the Katsuramuki technique to cut them into thin sheets. He checked on the chopsticks, filled a bowl with water before slicing the thin sheets into strips, and placed them in the cold water. Wrapping the carrot strips around the chopsticks to form the curl made Joie smile as fond memories of Chez Figaro took over. He didn’t notice when the chef moved away to check on other things. Joie finished the carrots and looked around for more. A smiling young man brought her a crate of long thin cucumbers. Joie looked around for some type of instruction. Since none was forthcoming she caught the chef’s eye and asked “Snakes?” “Of course.” “All right, just wanted to make sure you didn’t want trees.” “Trees? No time today.” Joie nodded and laughed ruefully. She was better off with the cucumber snakes but trees would have been fun. Without another word to anyone she bent to the task of itazuri. When the rolling was done he blanched them quickly, then cooled and cut, preparing them for the tatejid flavored with kombu kelp. She had just placed the last of the cucumbers in the water when the chef said softly “You should go now.” “These have to soak for ten minutes. I...” “They party starts in an hour. All of the bathrooms are full and you smell of cucumber and carrots. We allowed you to stay too long.” Joie’s heart sank to her toes. The chef was right, there was no way she could be ready in time, not when she had to share facilities. She had secrets she had to keep. “Ah ...” The chef looked at the mountain of quality work the blonde girl had churned out without a single try to extract information. They wouldn’t have gotten as much done and their meal would have been less grand. He nodded slightly as he came to his decision. “You may use my quarters. My room has a private bath. It is currently unused. I will have a maid fetch your bags. What is your name please?” “Kawai Joie.” Hope glittered brightly from golden eyes “Do you mean it?” When he nodded she impulsively hugged the tall man tightly. “Thank you so much.” “It is the least I can do.” He gestured for one of the hovering maids “Go and bring Kawai-san’s bags down.” He turned back to Joie and nodded. “Now you have time to deal with the cucumbers while you wait.” A loud growl made him frown slightly. “You are hungry?” “I came down for a snack originally, but when I saw how busy you were I decided to help instead of interrupt.” She admitted sweetly. “I see.” With a quick nod the chef turned to a small crisis two stations away. Joie had just pulled the last of the ‘snakes’ out of its brine when the maid rushed back with her luggage. Gratefully she took it and glanced to the chef. The tall man was already beckoning her to follow. The room was small, tidy, and best of all private. The bathroom was only a half bath, but it was more than she would have gotten upstairs. “Thank you again. It’s perfect.” “Hurry please. You mustn’t be late.” Bowing he murmured “Gambatte.” And backed out of the room, locking the door behind him. Joie didn’t waste a second. She tore the extension out of her hair and shed her clothes as she rushed to the bathroom. A fast, six minute shower, and she was out and smoothing cream into her damp skin. Hating the necessity she freshened the genital tuck and tape, applying it extra tight with a pained grimace. Her dress was whisper-thin satin and would show any break in the line or flow of the dress. Blotting carefully he removed the excess water and began to apply the powder that would give his skin the soft look that women took for granted. Critically he eyed every inch of his body, dabbing the powder here and there. Satisfied he slid on the first layer, his panties. He corrected the lines carefully and then reached for his prosthetic bra. Tonight he would not have the security of one with straps because straps would look tacky with his gown. He positioned the strapless prosthetic and even though it felt like it would take a bomb to get him out of it, he used the sweat proof adhesive Gian had ordered him to wear with it. Thankfully it was quick setting, only five minutes. In that time he tweaked with the hair piece they’d chosen for tonight. An elaborate chignon required just a little touch up before it could be applied. Unfortunately his real hair needed to be tamed first. The adhesive dried before that happened. At last Jou was satisfied with his hair. A quick glance at the clock told him he had less than thirty minutes. She could apply her makeup in twenty and be dressed in five. He could do this. Haste wouldn’t screw it up.” Twenty-three minutes later Kawai Joie was sliding on her needle thin black heels when a knock sounded at the door. She checked her appearance one last time, checked the room to make sure all of her items were was in her bag, and unlocked the door. The chef stared in awe at the woman in his room. She had been tall and beautiful in the kitchen, but now, dressed in black satin and heels she was beyond beautiful. “Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have made it without you. I’ve picked up my stuff and cleaned up any mess I made.” The chef bowed slightly. “A maid will take your things back up to your room.” He proffered a small tray holding a sandwich and cup of tea. “Eat this now. We can’t have you fainting of hunger. We in the kitchen have decided we want you to win so you can stay and help us.” The chef hesitated for a moment then said softly “There is a balcony on the second floor above the ballroom. It is a very restful place to take a few minutes and relax. You can see and hear everything from there.” Joie smiled gratefully. A quiet place might be something she needed later. “Thank you again. I’ll come down to the kitchen and eat if I may?” “Our pleasure Kawai-san.” He smiled and they returned to the kitchen. All movement and noise came to a halt as everyone stared at the gorgeous woman who, less than an hour ago, had stood at a station happily making decorative vegetables. The satin dress was a work of art in its simplistic elegance. A cowl neckline, low, but not too low, hinted at curves, the shoulder straps hung down in an eye-catching sway, and the long silhouette fit to Joie’s form without clinging. The flared skirt brushed the ground, covering her modestly while allowing enough room to walk without a slit. It was simple, elegant, refined, modest, and sexier than any of the thigh high, slit to the navel dresses some of the other contestants were wearing. It didn’t blatantly display her charms for anyone to see; it highlighted them and invited the discriminating eye to look closer. Joie nibbled her sandwich and drank her tea as quickly as manners would allow. Not because she was in a hurry, but because she was hungry. She finished at one minute to six. Smiling her thanks she bowed slightly. “Thank you all again.” Straightening she took a deep breath, and with a slow, graceful sway left the kitchen and made her way to the hall. Matsu-san, dressed in a simple black sheath, hurried to her side. “There you are! I was worried about you when you didn’t come up to the room.” “I am sorry.” Joie could see the woman had been genuinely distressed. “I am unable to change lists.” “I figured that much. I thought you’d been asked to leave. You didn’t show up to the room and then a maid came to get your things an hour ago.” She gave Joie an appraising look. “But I can see that wasn’t the case. What happened?” Joie smiled ruefully. “I got bored and went to help in the kitchen. Time got away from me so the kitchen staff let me use their bathroom to dress.” The older woman was at a loss for words. She was surprised that a young, beautiful woman would want to help in the kitchen and stunned that the gold on black elegance had taken less than an hour to achieve. The best she could come up with was a mild “Oh.” The shorter woman nodded and straightened her shoulders. “Into the fray?” Joie laughed and nodded. “Into the fray.” Three hours later Joie wasn’t laughing. Her targets were illusive, Peaches staying on the dance floor with Matashi and Pegasus always on the far side of the room from her no matter how much she mixed and mingled, moving through the crowd. Her third assignment, Croquet, was nowhere to be found. The buffet had been wonderful and she’d taken a small amount of pride in the exclamations of pleasure at its presentation. Her cucumber snakes and carrot curls had added to the presentation of the stellar food. Matashi and Peaches weren’t leaving the dance floor soon and Pegasus had moved again. Frustrated she sighed and turned away, almost running over a short, stout woman in an outdated black dress. Automatically Joie started to apologize and move on, but the wistful look the woman gave her made Joie stop and talk. “Hi, forgive me I wasn’t watching where I was going.” “It’s okay. I know people at yer height don’t see th’ little people down here.” Joie blinked slightly. The accent was familiar and so was the attitude. “Being tall has its advantages.” She accorded softly. “But looking where one’s going is of greater advantage.” Knowing the other woman would take it as a put down she didn’t bow, instead she held out her hand. “I am Kawai Joie.” “I’m Tien Misuki. My husband works for Kaiba-sama.” The woman’s dark gaze moved away to the buffet. “I am honored to meet you.” She gesture to the buffet. “Have you eaten? I haven’t, and I’m starving.” “I...” The woman hesitated then nodded. “I am hungry.” “Then will you join me? I have only had a sandwich since this morning.” “Lucky you. I’ve been nervous about this all week. I ain’t ate in days.” “Nervous?” Joie moved them to the buffet. “Do you want to talk about it?” “Not fer me, fer my daughter. She ain’t ever been ta one of these fancy things. This was her first.” “I see. Where is she?” Joie glanced around to find the girl. “Hidin’ in th’ back hall bawlin’ her eyes out. When she got outta th’ car one of th’ fancy girls laughed at her dress. It’s white an’ has a big skirt. It looks kinda like a weddin’ dress. Th’ girl laughed an’ said ‘Here comes th’ bride.’ Her dad paid a lot o’ money for th’ dress an said we gotta stay but she won’t come in here ‘cause she is so embarrassed.” “How cruel. Did you happen to catch the girl’s name?” “She was wearin’ blue and gold. Tha’s all I remember.” “Well, we should take your daughter some food. It will cheer her up. We can have our own party.” Joie figured she might as well since Pegasus, Matashi and Peaches had all disappeared in the time she’d been talking to the older woman. She began to lay enough food for two on her plate. “Let’s go.” “Mother! I told you to go enjoy yourself at the party.” A slim, medium height girl with waist length flowing black hair and wearing the gaudiest dress Joie had ever seen stood in what was obviously a servant’s hall. “We came to cheer you up. Sora, this is Kawai-san.” The young lady took one look at Joie’s gold and black perfection and started to cry. “Well people don’t usually cry when introduced to me. Now calm yourself and explain what’s wrong.” Brisk practicality worked like a charm. The tears dried almost instantly. “You know what’s wrong. Look at me. I look like a bride, or a wedding cake. I just wanted to be a princess, like Cinderella and instead I’m a joke.” “It’s not the clothes; it’s how you wear them.” Joie parroted Gian’s advice, but mentally she winced. Nothing could save that dress. “It cost so much and it was hard to put on. It has three layers. Three! The underskirt, the overdress, and then the shell. I hate it...and I loved it before. I’m such a loser!” “Three layers?” Joie was reassessing the dress. “The underskirt, it consists only of the bell skirt?” “Yes. It attaches with that big rhinestone clip.” Joie circled the girl, assessing more, seeing the possibilities. Suddenly she burst into action. “Come with me.” She shoved her plate to the unsuspecting mother and pulled the girl towards the kitchen. Seeing her chef friend she asked softly “May we use your rooms again? We have an urgent situation.” He recognized the girl several of his maids had spoken of as crying in the halls and he saw the determination in Joie’s eyes. “Of course Kawai-san. Your bags are still there. I am sorry but the maids haven’t had time...” “They are? That’s great! Thank you again.” Without a moment to spare she dragged the girl, with the trailing mother into the chef’s room. Impatiently she gestured the girl into the bathroom. “Take off the underskirt and leave the overdress and shell on.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
