E is for Emergency
The ambulance pulled up to a curb and came to a stop. The back doors opened and Joey popped out. He slammed the doors shut before walking around to the driver’s side. He pulled himself up to pop his head in the window. The driver and passenger laughed.“Have a good ride back there, Wheels?” the passenger asked.“I woulda been okay, except “Indy” decided to drive through the longest road with the biggest potholes in the city,” Joey answered.“Indy” threw his back and laughed.“Better get used to it, Wheels. The life of an EMT is not an easy task,” the driver told him.Joey smiled.“Dude, who wants an easy job? Let them firefighters have the easy job,” Joey replied. That caused the two EMTs to howl with laughter. When they calmed down, the passenger spoke again.“Hey, you sure you don’t want us to drop you off closer to your apartment?” he asked.Joey shook his head.“Nah. I have to stop by and grab some stuff at the corner store. Thanks anyway, guys. Night, Indy. Patch.”“Night, Wheels.”Joey hopped down onto the sidewalk and waved goodbye as the ambulance pulled away from the curb. He watched them disappear down the road before moving on. He walked while a lanyard swung lightly from around his neck. It had his photo ID badge and a capped pen attached to it.He strolled down the street towards the corner store. They were just coming off a late shift so there was no one out on the streets at that time. There were a few cars that drove past him, but they paid him no mind. He glanced up ahead of him to see a light change and a black SUV pull out into the intersection. What happened next shocked the blonde to the core. As the black SUV moved slowly out into the intersection, a large truck came out of nowhere. The truck struck the SUV hard on the side, causing it to spin out. The truck never even paused as it roared down the road and past Joey.As all this happened, Joey snapped his pen out of its cap and started writing on the inner side of his arm. He wrote all the details about the truck as it ran from the accident. That done, Joey snapped the pen back on the cap. He whipped out his cell phone and hit speed dial as he ran down the road to the SUV.“Hey, Wheels! Man, what did you forget in the truck this time?”“Halliwell, get your ass back here! Hit and run at Fifth and Nine!” Joey shouted.“Shit! We’re coming, Joey!”Joey hung up the phone, made another dial, and kept running. It felt like the road stretched out forever.“Wheeler?”“Officer Mac, we got a hit and run at Fifth and Nine. I’m running to the victims now. Suspect’s driving a white truck with the license plate 95FYN2. Front plate is a picture of a blue cobra with the symbol for Love. Truck’s heading south on Fifth. EMS is en route.”Now closer to the SUV, Joey hung up his cell phone and jammed it back into his pocket. He checked on the driver who appeared to only have a small cut above his eyebrow. Looking at the damage of the car, Joey could see that the back seat bore the brunt of the strike.“Sir, are you okay?” Joey asked.“I’m fine, I’m fine. Check on the kid. He’s my kid brother’s friend,” the driver grunted in slight pain.Joey pulled out his pocket light and shined it through the broken window of the backseat. He nearly dropped the light in shock when he saw who was in the backseat.“Oh my God.”Joey tried to yank the door open but there was no budging it. He could hear sirens coming in the distance. He ran around to the other side of the SUV and threw open the other backseat door. Joey immediately jumped in, his hand reaching up to change the dome light from Door to On. The light cascaded over the injured brunette while the driver stumbled out of the vehicle. Joey’s hand came up to the youth’s face.“Mokuba! Kid, wake up! Can you hear me?” Joey said in a loud voice.Mokuba groaned as his eyes opened to half-lid. There was blood down the side of his face and Joey couldn’t see any more injuries, but he knew appearances were deceiving. Mokuba stared up at him in confusion as Joey carefully unbuckled his seat belt.“J-Joey?” Mokuba murmured.“It’s all right, kid. I’m gonna get ya outta here, okay?”Mokuba groaned in obvious pain. Joey could hear the ambulance and fire truck pulling up now.“Joey! Wheels!” he heard someone yell.“In here!” Joey shouted back.Indy suddenly appeared at the window. Joey’s head snapped up as he held Mokuba’s head in place using his hands.“Bring me a neck brace and get the spreader. Patient has a head injury and facial wounds and contusions,” Joey told him.Indy shouted to Patch what they needed. Joey continued checking Mokuba over while speaking softly to him.“You gotta stay awake for me, okay kid? Wait until after we get to the hospital. Where’s yer brother at? The mansion?” Joey asked.Mokuba barely moved his head in a small shake of side to side.“Bei…jing.”Joey cracked a small smile. “China? Yer brother tryin’ to buy the Great Wall?”Mokuba smiled. He didn’t realize it at the time, but Joey’s joking and calm nature was distracting him from his pain. Joey was pleased to find that there weren’t a whole lot of injuries he could find. Sadly, the side of the car door was crunched into the boy’s side and Joey feared that could be major damage.Patch appeared at the window and handed him the neck brace. As Joey placed it around Mokuba’s neck, he told the boy what he was doing. Joey quickly spoke to Patch as the man shined a light to get a better look at things. Since they were unsure of the intensity of Mokuba’s wounds, the team determined it was best to remove the door and pull him out from the short distance. They covered Joey and Mokuba with a covering while the firefighters went to work on the door. They used a hydraulic tool called a spreader in which they pressed it between the two doors. They opened the arms of the tool and pushed apart the metal in the panels. It made a lot of noise and scared Mokuba.“It’s okay, kid. We’re gonna get ya out of here. I ain’t gonna let yer brother come back and rip into me ‘cause I didn’t take care of ya,” Joey told him.Mokuba choked back a laugh. He couldn’t believe Joey was still cracking jokes. Finally, the vehicle popped from its hinges and the firefighters pulled the door away. Everything went in a blur as Mokuba’s body was carefully pulled from the car and laid out on the stretcher. They laid him on his uninjured side in his curled up position. Joey explained to him that this was to minimize the aggravation of any hidden injuries. They got Mokuba into the ambulance with Joey sitting next to him. Patch jumped in back, closing the doors behind him. Indy jumped into the driver’s seat, slammed the door shut and hit the gas pedal. Patch started working on hooking Mokuba up and getting vitals. Joey tried to ignore the blood on Mokuba’s side and shirt.“How can I reach yer brother, Mokie? Is there a number I can call?” Joey asked.“C-cell.”Joey reached down, mindful of Patch trying to work, as he fished Mokuba’s cell out. The screen was cracked, but it still seemed useable. He carefully placed it in his pocket.“Wheels, is he a PC?” Patch asked.PC was EMT-talk for Personal Contact. They referred to people they knew by this way. The team worked just as hard as if the people were strangers, but they kept the information in their mind.“He’s a VIPC!” Joey shouted over the siren, allowing for both EMTs to hear him.“Call it in, Wheels!”Joey turned around and grabbed up a Bluetooth which he attached to his ear. He was immediately connected to Domino General.“General, this is EMT 4-5-9. We are en route, fifteen minutes away. Victim is of a hit and run. Patient is a Caucasian male, age 15, blood type O Negative. Head injury and contusions and wounds to the face. Injury to right side due to vehicular impact; damage extent unknown.”Mokuba closed his eyes for what felt like a second. However, when he opened his eyes again, the ambulance was pulling to a stop and the back doors thrown open. His stretcher was pulled out into the cool air and wheeled inside. He glanced up for the blonde hair and saw Joey staying outside on his [Mokuba’s] phone.Joey had quickly thumbed through the contacts and found Kaiba’s number. He pressed Call, brought the phone to his ear and waited. He looked at his watch, reading the time as close to midnight. Thankfully, the phone was picked up on the third ring.“Mr. Kaiba, how may I help you?”Joey was surprised to hear Roland answer the phone.“Roland, this is Joey Wheeler. Where’s Kaiba?” Joey demanded.“Mr. Wheeler? It’s late. He’s already retired for the night. Where is Mokuba?” Roland sounded concerned over the phone.“Listen! Ya gotta throw him out of bed and on the fastest plane back here. Mokuba was in an accident. He’s hurt bad and we got him here at Domino General. I know his blood type, but I need to know if he has any allergies and any surgeries he’s had.”Snapping to attention, Roland quickly told him where to locate that information on Mokuba’s phone. He told Joey it would be three hours until they got there. Joey snapped the phone shut, located the information and dashed inside./……/
Seto made it to the hospital in record timing. He had called ahead from his private jet so the police gave him a personal, high-speed escort to the hospital. Upon entering the hospital, he was greeted by the doctor who had been attending to Mokuba.
“Mr. Kaiba, I’m Dr. Satoshi. Your brother is resting comfortably right now. Let me take you to him.”Seto followed the doctor down the hall and into an elevator as the doctor explained everything.“Mokuba has a minor head injury which has been cleaned, stitched up, and bandaged. The bruises and cuts on his face are minor and will heal with time. The cuts were cleaned and sanitized. Now he did have some internal bleeding, but surgery fixed that right up. He will need to be on a strict diet for a while.”They climbed off the elevator and rounded the corner. Gazing down the hall, Seto frowned as a nurse came scurrying out of a room. Upon seeing the doctor, she stormed up to him in a huff. She completely ignored the CEO.“Doctor, you have to do something about Wheeler. He won’t let me do my job,” she complained.Seto’s frown deepened. Just what was the mutt thinking? However, Dr. Satoshi surprised him with a frown.“Nurse Holly, he has his reasons and I have personally assigned you to another patient. Go and care for her,” Dr. Satoshi said in a warning tone. She opened her mouth to say something, but then snapped it shut and stormed away. Dr. Satoshi turned back to him.“I apologize, Mr. Kaiba, but Joey has his reasons for throwing her out. He is perfectly capable of keeping an eye on Mokuba and hasn’t left his side since arriving here. He even insisted on being in the surgery room.”Seto was astonished by this.“And you let him? Knowing that I could sue you and this hospital for allowing him in the room?” Seto asked.Dr. Satoshi smiled. “When I told Joey that, he said and I quote, ‘You tell that fat-head Kaiba I don’t give a damn so long as he sues me. He and I both Mokie wouldn’t let that happen.’”Wheeler had a point. Mokuba wouldn’t let his big brother sue anyone for them helping him. Dr. Satoshi further explained that when the nurse had been hooking Mokuba up in the room, she had pressed a little too hard on Mokuba. The boy had let out a sound of pain and Joey had promptly thrown her out.Seto had to resist the urge to laugh. It sounded like Wheeler was the perfect guard dog. He had watched over the young man and come to his defense when he couldn’t defend himself. He thanked the doctor and walked down the hall to the room.Seto pushed the door open and walked inside. His eyes fell first on his brother who looked far better than he had been imagining. Then his gaze fell on Wheeler. The blonde had his back to him and was bending down to fiddle with something. Seto felt a stirring in his lower stomach as the jeans revealed how fit the mutt’s back end was.Sensing someone in the doorway, Joey stood up as he finished checking over Mokuba. He spoke before he started to turn around.“I ain’t sorry for what I did, doc. She has no business being in this r-,” Joey’s eyes widened at who stood in the doorway. “…oom.”“So you’re playing guard dog, huh pup?” Seto asked, smirking. He stepped further into the room. As he approached the bedside and came around the side, Joey stepped aside to allow him to stand in the space he had been occupying. Seto gave his brother a careful look over and gently squeezed his hand.“The officers already came in, Kaiba. They told me they caught the guy that ran the light and hit ‘em. The dude was over the legal limit. He didn’t even know he’d hit someone. Damn, I could have thrown a brick straight through his hea-mphff.”Wheeler’s prattling on was annoying so he thought the best way to silence him was shove him against the wall and kiss him. Joey stared at him in confusion until he pulled back, licking his lips.“What was that?” Joey asked, confused.Seto chuckled. “That was gratitude, puppy. For keeping an eye on my brother. Good boy.”Joey’s eyes narrowed into a thin, horizontal line.“Good boy? Puppy? Kaiba, you assho-mphff.”Again?! You got to be kidding me, Joey thought.Seto placed one hand on his side and another held the side of his face. He kept his lips pressed to Joey’s a bit longer this time. When he pulled back, the poor blonde looked thoroughly confused as he simply blinked at him. Joey opened his mouth to probably protest yet again, but Seto pressed his thumb over them.“For once in your life, be quiet, pup. You have no idea how frayed my nerves have been since Roland shook me awake. First I hear that my brother has been an accident and then I hear that you of all people called it in. Even witnessed the accident for yourself. If it wasn’t for you, he could have sat in that vehicle without medical attention and could have died.”Joey stayed silent. He could see the intense emotions swirling in the CEO’s eyes.“You came to me after graduation and asked me if we could bury the hatchet and become friends. I agreed to let the dust settle for Mokuba’s sake, but I told you I don’t have friends. You know I can’t repay you for how much you’ve done for us tonight, but I can offer you a place in my life.” Pause. “As my lover.”Joey’s eyes widened marginally. Mokuba knew about him having a crush. Had he told his older brother his suspicions of it being him? Seto moved his thumb away and slid his hand up to the golden hair. Joey let out a surprised groan at the touch.“What do you say, pup? You can spend more time with Mokuba. I can’t promise I’ll be the best boyfriend, but I’m willing to try. You know I’ll treat you well,” Seto whispered.Joey felt his stomach clench and moisture prick at his eyes. It was what he had wanted since graduation two years ago. They had “hung out” with Mokuba a couple of times, in which Joey had seen a little more of a different side of Kaiba. A side he really liked.“You gonna stop calling me a puppy?” Joey murmured.Seto chuckled. “Would you prefer mutt?”Joey’s response was throwing his arms around Seto’s head and yanking him down into a kiss. Seto drew Joey’s bottom lip in between his to give it a quick suck and a nip. Joey gladly opened his mouth and welcomed the tongue that pressed inside. Seto pressed him harder into the wall as his tongue roamed inside Joey’s mouth. The blonde tried to participate, but the brunette was too good for him and he settled back to just enjoy the kiss.Seto gently scratched the blonde’s head, earning him a groan that echoed into his own mouth. He did it again and got a whimper. Seto smirked into the kiss. Life was going to get a lot more interesting with his new puppy. He finally broke the kiss when he felt Joey having a hard time breathing. The two shared a smile. Seto surprised his new lover by leaning forward to press a kiss to the top of his head. Joey turned his head away with a blush. His face suddenly froze.Seto raised his eyebrow when his new lover’s gaze shifted to the side. He followed the gaze and found that his little brother was staring at them.“How long you been awake, kid?” Joey demanded.Mokuba cracked a big grin.“Long enough to see big brother beat you at tonsil hockey.”The blonde’s face burned bright red while Seto bit back a laugh. Joey gently pulled out of his embrace before stalking over to Mokuba’s side.“You little brat! You’re lucky I like you and you’re hooked up to an IV or so help me God,” Joey warned him.Seto stood there with his arms crossed over his chest and an amused smile on his face. He watched his brother smile and chuckle at Joey’s antics before he decided to intervene. He walked over to stand behind Joey. The brunette wrapped his arms around the blonde, causing him to quiet instantly. Seto chuckled as he leaned his chest into Joey’s back.“Mokuba, stop antagonizing Joey. I’m not fond of the color red,” Seto hinted, gently rocking their bodies side to side.Mokuba had to suppress a chuckle. He knew Seto probably couldn’t see just how badly Joey’s face was burning right now. Then again, judging by the smirk on his brother’s face, he probably could.“Ha ha. Hey, Wheels. You know you have a sizeable growth on your back?”Joey cursed himself but turned his head to the door. Indy and Patch came in with equally big smiles on their faces. Joey cracked a grin.“Was that a hint of jealousy, I hear, Patch?” Joey teased.Patch snorted.“Pfft. You know brunettes ain’t my type. Besides, you both look comfortable right where you are,” Patch teased back.Joey shook his head as he looked over his shoulder. Seto raised an eyebrow.“Can I have my body back, please?” Joey asked.Seto smirked.“I don’t know. Can you?”Both EMTs howled in laughter along with Mokuba. Joey was embarrassed and amused. Who knew the CEO would use such a corny line? When the EMT’s had calmed down, Joey introduced them.“Mokuba, these are my teammates and fellow EMTs. This is Daniel “Indy” Nash and Patrick “Patch” Halliwell. Guys, this is Mokuba Kaiba. And his brother…uh….Seto,” Joey said.It felt so weird using Kaiba’s first name. It tasted weird in his mouth and sounded off to his ears. Seeing the astonished looks and then leers on his co-workers faces told Joey he wouldn’t hear the end of this for a while. As if sensing his thoughts, Seto smiled. Not smirked, but smiled.“My brother and I thank you for your swift actions,” Seto told them.“It’s not a problem. Wheels gave the call and we came a’running,” Patch answered.Mokuba perked up.“Wheels?” he asked.Indy chuckled as he came over and patted Mokuba on the arm.“Everyone at the House has nicknames for the team members. I’m Indy, since I’m the driver and I enjoy watching the Indianapolis 500 in the States. Patch here got his nickname because he was real accident-prone as a kid so he was patched up a lot.”Mokuba turned his smile to Joey. “And Joey’s?”Indy flashed Joey a smile.“Well, now, Joey’s nickname is a combination of a few different things. I’m sure you’ve noticed how much he likes to run his mouth,” Indy said.“Yes,” chorused both Kaiba’s.Joey snapped his head back over his shoulder to glare at Seto. The brunette only continued to smirk at him. Patch continued the conversation.“There’s that and it’s an ongoing theory that the inside of Joey’s brain is a bunch of wheels & gears moving around at a fast pace. And, naturally, he likes to move around quickly. Thus, the entire House made it unanimous that Joey is “Wheels.””Seto thought the nickname suited him. Granted, he preferred puppy, but Wheels was a good work nickname for him. He hugged the blonde close to his body as the two EMTs talked with his brother. Normally, he wasn’t one for such public displays, but he wasn’t going to hold back. There was no one else he would have rather had by his brother’s side in an emergency. And he would make damn sure his puppy knew that later. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
