Chapter 5: New Decks
"Welcome everyone to Industrial Illusions! I do hope everyone had a pleasant trip. Oh, please, right this way everyone." Pegasus said, leading the group into the building. Kaiba caught up with Pegasus as they were walking. To
"Pegasus, we need to talk." Kaiba said.
"Oh boy. I already don't like the sound of this." Pegasus said with a sigh as the two of them walked side by side.
"What you've been doing needs to stop, Pegasus." Kaiba said.
"My my, whatever do you mean, Kaiba-boy?" Pegasus asked.
"Don't play coy with me, Pegasus. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Supplying the underground with cards in order for your company to run beta tests." Kaiba said.
"Oh I'm so sorry Kaiba-boy, but as you so eloquently put it not so long ago, business is business. Why even the thought of the increased overhead is enough to make me fear for the price of Industrial Illusions' stock." Pegasus said.
"So you'd rather enable sadistic killers like Vex instead?" Kaiba asked.
"Perhaps he uses the cards provided by Industrial Illusions, but he also uses the duel disk provided by Kaiba Corp. Doesn't that mean that you're partly responsible?" Pegasus asked.
"Don't try to split hairs with me, Pegasus! You know full well that Kaiba Corp. isn't supplying free duel disks to the underground, so don't try to say that you and I are doing the same thing!" Kaiba said.
"I couldn't care less whether we are or not, Kaiba-boy." Pegasus said as he stopped and looked at Kaiba.
"I run my company the best way that I see fit to run it. And unlike you, I have the full support of my Board of Directors, who are fully aware of what I'm doing." Kaiba began to respond, but Pegasus quickly cut him off.
"And if you're thinking about trying to blackmail me with that recorded conversation, you should know that Industrial Illusions has a monopoly on Duel Monsters. Public opinion might turn sour for a time, but it will pass, and things will return to normal for me. Furthermore, your attempt at leaking that conversation will be seen as the childish temper tantrum that it is, and your credibility as CEO of Kaiba Corp. will sustain even more damage, which your Board of Directors will take full advantage of."
Pegasus said.
"Don't think for one second that you can win this war, Kaiba-boy. You're out-smarted and outgunned on every front. So if you're finished, let's move on to the part where I take pity on you and give you cards for free."
With that, Pegasus walked off. Kaiba, seething with anger, followed suit. Yami
caught up with Kaiba.
"All is not lost, Kaiba. There may yet be a way to force Pegasus's hand. If he's afraid of the increased overhead of hiring beta testers, then we have to convince him that he is actually spending more money now than he would be if he
made a simple deal with you." Yami said.
"What do you mean?" Kaiba asked.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Kaiba Corp already employ thousands of beta testers? And isn't it true that Kaiba Corp. frequently partners with Industrial Illusions on various projects? If so, simply allow Pegasus free access to the Kaiba Corp. beta testers as a joint partnership venture. This
way, his company actually saves money because he's no longer dumping cards down the trash." Yami said. Kaiba thought about it.
"Pegasus won't be able to raise the objection that the money from the underground duels eventually wind up in his or your pockets either, because the underground has no need to actually purchase Industrial Illusions products or Kaiba Corp. products. Pegasus provides the cards that they would've otherwise purchased, and most of the Kaiba Corp. products in the underground are pirated anyway." Yami said.
"Tch! Don't remind me...." Kaiba said.
"We will address that problem at a later time. For now, simply work on convincing Pegasus that his current course is costing far more money than is necessary. If he partners with Kaiba Corp. in the manner I've laid out, then not only does Pegasus save money, his profit margins will rise because the underground will have no choice but to actually purchase the cards that they are presently getting for free." Yami said. Kaiba just laughed.
"Yami, have I ever told you how much I love you?" Kaiba asked.
"You'll have plenty of opportunities later tonight." Yami said seductively.
"This is very unusual for Pegasus." Bakura said from behind Yami and Kaiba.
"What are you talking about? This is textbook Pegasus. Clearly you don't know the man." Kaiba said.
"I know him better than you think, Kaiba." Bakura said. "I was the one who took his Millennium Eye from him back at Duelist Kingdom after Yugi defeated him."
"That was you!?" Yami asked.
"Yes, Pharaoh, that was me. And when I confronted Pegasus, I learned that his actions up until that point were part of his effort to resurrect his deceased wife by using the seven Millennium Items in combination with science." Bakura
said.
"Interesting." Yami mused aloud. They soon arrived at their destination. The room was huge, with various researchers running to and fro.
"Welcome everyone to the Industrial Illusions Research Center! This is where the latest duel monsters are created, from the concepts all the way to the card design." Pegasus said. He then signaled for one of the researchers to come
over. A small elderly man walked over and greeted everyone.
"This is Dr. Tillman. He's our head researcher here at Industrial Illusions." The aforementioned man gave a small, timid wave.
"I've instructed him to help you in the creation of your new decks. If there is anything you need, he will assist you to the best of his abilities. And with that, I have a scheduled meeting I have to attend. I bid you all adieu."
Pegasus said with a melodramatic bow. He then turned and left.
"All right now. Before we start, I'd like to speak with each of you in turn in order to get a feel for your dueling philosophy and methodology. Then I'd like to look at your decks, if you have them with you, in order to ascertain your skills in deck building. Then, we will discuss ways in which to optimize your
existing skill sets and strengths, while minimizing any deficiencies that may exist." Dr. Tillman said.
"Eh, what? Sorry, but I didn't get half that." Joey said.
"Does anyone here speak 'canine'?" Kaiba asked. Before Joey could respond, Dr. Tillman walked up to Joey.
"I think we'll start with you. You're Joey Wheeler, yes? Come along, now." Dr. Tillman said as he pulled Joey by his arm with strength that a little old man just shouldn't have. Joey was floundering about in comical fashion, yelling "wait" and "hold on" along the way. The sight brought a smile to Kaiba's face.
"Kaiba. Be nice." Yami said, seeing the look on Kaiba's face.
"I can't help it if that mutt is scared to get his shots." Kaiba said with a smirk. Yami just sighed and shook his head. Suddenly, a female researcher walked up to the two of them.
"Excuse me, Mr. Kaiba? Mr. Muto? My name is Dr. Banks, and I run the Deck Optimization program." She said with a courteous bow.
"I am also an assistant to Dr. Tillman. He asked me to work with the two of you until he's finished with Mr. Wheeler. Please, right this way."
Yami and Kaiba followed her about 20 feet to a nearby station which had a computer terminal and something that almost looked like a dispenser of some
sort.
"We have every card we've ever created logged into a central database, which we can access here through this terminal. Then, we can print those cards on the spot right here with a built-in 3D printer." Dr. Banks said, with a touch of pride.
"That'll take way too long." Kaiba said, irritated.
"Oh no it won't, Mr. Kaiba. This 3D printer can print an entire deck in under 2 minutes!" Dr. Banks said, glowingly. "It's the most advanced 3D printer in the world, created right here at Industrial Illusions!"
Kaiba gave an irritable "hmph", but inwardly he was thoroughly impressed.
"Now. What would you two say is your favorite Duel Monster?" Dr. Banks asked. Kaiba and Yami both pulled out their decks and searched them until they found the cards they were looking for.
"Mine is the Blue-Eyes White Dragon." Kaiba said, showing her the card he picked.
"For myself, it can be none other than the Dark Magician." Yami said, doing likewise. Dr. Banks looked and and nodded.
"Alright then. Mr. Kaiba, we'll have you go first. Simply type in 'Blue-Eyes White Dragon' into the search bar, and every single card that is named or even mentions what you typed will appear. Then, you simply select how many you want
to add to your deck, and when you're finished, press the return key and the deck you created will begin printing." Dr. Banks said.
Kaiba stepped up to the terminal and proceeded as instructed.Yami watched as Kaiba selected his cards, surprised at what Kaiba was selecting.
"Kaiba, isn't that-" Yami had started to ask, but Kaiba cut him off.
"Everyone's been right about me." Kaiba said. "I've been too full of myself. I've let my ego outgrow my abilities. Recent events have shown me that. I have to re-evaluate myself. I have to swallow my pride and do what must be done, and right now what must be done is to learn from the humiliation I suffered at the hands of Vex." Kaiba said. Yami just listened, as Kaiba continued:
"The worst part about it all was that he used my own card, the card that I am so famous for, far better than I ever could've used it. So I'm going to learn from him. I'm going to polish my skills so that when we meet again, I'll pay him back for what he did!" Kaiba said with conviction.
When he was finished, he pressed the return key and waited while his deck printed with blinding speed. When it was finished, he collected his deck from the dispenser, then stepped aside for Yami to build his deck.
"Dr. Banks. Does this facility have an area where a duel can be conducted?" Yami asked.
"Why yes, Mr. Muto. Why do you ask?" Dr. Banks asked.
"I'd like for Kaiba and myself to have a duel to test our new decks, if it can be arranged." Yami said.
"It certainly can be, Mr. Muto. I'll see to it once you're finished." Dr. Banks said.
"Thank you, Dr. Banks." Yami said as he went to work.
"It looks like we're thinking alike, because I was going to suggest the same thing." Kaiba said with a smirk.
"If that's true, then why don't we make this interesting. What do you say we turn this duel into a 'penalty' game?" Yami asked in a suggestive tone. Kaiba studied him for a moment.
"What are the terms?" Kaiba asked, somewhat uneasy about what he might hear. Yami walked up to Kaiba and whispered in his ear. All of a sudden, Kaiba turned beet red.
"Well, Kaiba? Do you accept?" Yami asked
"I accept." Kaiba said, trying not to stammer. Yami went back to work building his deck. When he finished, he pressed the return key and collected his deck when it was finished.
"Well now. If you would both follow me, I'll escort you to the duel site we have here." Dr. Banks said. Kaiba and Yami followed until they came to an open area surrounded by holographic generators.
"This is our duel arena. As you can see from the lack of people here, the site doesn't get used much, except when some of us just want to blow off some steam." Dr. Banks said. She then signaled for a couple of staffers to bring a
pair of Duel Disks to Kaiba and Yami.
"All right. I'll be watching from over there if you need me." Dr. Banks said as she pointed to a small bench to the side. When she walked away, Kaiba and Yami strapped their Duel Disks on, loaded their decks, and started the duel.
Kaiba: 4000 LP Yami: 4000 LP
DUEL!!!
Yami drawed first.
"All right, Kaiba, I'll start with the spell card Fusion Deployment. With this card, I reveal one fusion monster from my extra deck, then I special summon one of the fusion material monsters specifically listed on the revealed card from
my hand or deck. I reveal the fusion monster The Dark Magicians (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 8, 2800 ATK, 2300 DEF), and I special summon The Dark Magician from my deck (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 7, 2500 ATK, 2100 DEF). Next, I place two cards face down and end my turn."
"Coming out strong, are we Yami? But I expect no less from you." Kaiba said.
"Your move, Kaiba." Yami said with a smirk.
"All right. I draw! First, I'll reveal one Blue-Eyes White Dragon in my hand in order to special summon Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon (Light, Dragon,
Level 8, 3000 ATK, 2500 DEF). Next, I activate the ritual spell Chaos Form. Now by sending the Blue-Eyes White Dragon that I revealed from my hand to the graveyard, I can ritual summon Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon! (Light, Dragon,
Level 8, 4000 ATK, 0 DEF)."
"I see you've drawn some inspiration from Vex, Kaiba." Yami said, smiling.
"That's the same monster that he defeated you with at the Expo. I never thought I'd see you filch an idea from an opponent you hate as much as Vex."
"I stole more than one idea from Vex, and of course I tweaked them to my advantage. The Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon can't be targeted by card effects controlled by my opponent, and he can't be destroyed by card effects controlled by my opponent either. That means you have no defense to what's coming next!" Kaiba said.
"Don't be so sure, Kaiba." Yami said, still smiling. "I activate the trap card Destined Rivals. I can activate this trap card if I control a Blue-Eyes White Dragon or a Dark Magician, and it negates the effects of all monsters my
opponent controls until the end of the turn." Yami said.
"Tch! That won't matter, because I'm ending this now! First, I'll have my Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon attack your Dark Magician (Yami: 3500 LP). Now my Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon will attack you directly!" Kaiba said.
"Not so fast, Kaiba! I activate the trap card Drowning Mirror Force! When my opponent declares a direct attack, all monsters that my opponent controls that are in attack mode are shuffled back into their owner's deck, and because my Destined Rivals trap card negated all of the effects of your monsters until end
of turn, that means your Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon is shuffled into your deck as well!" Yami said.
"Tch! Well played, Yami! Next, I place one card facedown and end my turn." Kaiba said.
"All right. I draw!" Yami said. "I play the spell card Secrets of Dark Magic! Now I can fusion summon a monster that requires Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl as the specified material. So by sending Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl from my hand to the graveyard, I fusion summon The Dark Magicians (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 8, 2800 ATK, 2300 DEF). And now I attack you directly with The Dark Magicians!"
"Hah! Did you think it would be that easy, Yami!? I activaate the trap card True Light!" Kaiba said.
"This trap card allows me to secial summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my hand or graveyard once per turn, or I can set a spell or trap card from my deck that specifically mentions Blue-Eyes White Dragon onto the field. So now I special summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon that I sent to the graveyard earlier! (Light, Dragon, Level 8, 3000 ATK, 2500 DEF.)"
"Also, as long as True Light is on the field, you can't target any monster in my monster zone named Blue-Eyes White Dragon with card effects!" Kaiba said.
"Very good, Kaiba! I'll have to call off my attack, but because you activated a trap card, The Dark Magicians' special ability activates! I get to draw one card, and if it is a spell or a trap, I can set it directly on the field! So I draw, and I set the card I just drew on the field. Next, I activate a trap card called Eternal Soul! Eternal Soul works exactly like your True Light trap, except it's effect applies to The Dark Magician.
So now I'll activate it's effect, and special summon Dark Magician from my graveyard!"
"Next, I activate the spell card that I just set due to The Dark Magicians' effect a moment ago, Soul Servant! This card lets me place one card from my hand, deck, or graveyard onto the top of my deck that is named Dark Magician, or mentions Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl. So I'll place on card from my deck onto the top of it. Next, I activate the other effect of Soul Servant. By banishing it from my graveyard, I can draw cards equal to the number of Palladium Monsters, Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girls with different names I have on the field and in my graveyard. So I draw two cards."
"I end my turn." Yami said.
"Tch! You're as annoying as ever!" Kaiba said.
"I draw! I activate the effect of True Light, which lets me set a spell or trap card that specifically mentions Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my deck directly onto the field. Then, I activate the effect of Dictator of D. from my hand! By sending one Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my Deck to my graveyard, I can special summon him to the field! (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 4, 1200 ATK, 1100 DEF). Next, I activate the spell card that I set just a moment ago, Bingo Machine, GO!!! Now I reveal three cards from my deck that are either Blue-Eyes monsters, or they are spell or trap cards that specifically list Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. Then, you pick one at random from them to add to my hand. The rest are shuffled back into my deck."
"Of course, it won't be random in this case, because I'm revealing three of the same card. the quick-play spell Ultimate Fusion. So I'll add one to my hand, and shuffle the rest back into my deck."
"The effect of The Dark Magicians activates, Kaiba." Yami said. "I draw one card, and it stays in my hand."
"Tch! That's annoying, but it won't matter. I attack your Dark Magician with Blue-Eyes White Dragon (Yami: 3000 LP), then I play the spell that I just added to my hand, Ultimate Fusion! This spell allows me to fusion summon a monster that has Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon listed as material by shuffling the listed monsters from my hand, field, or graveyard back into my deck!" Kaiba said.
"Wait, then that means-"
"That's right, Yami! I send the Blue-Eyes White Dragon on my field and the two Blue-Eyes White Dragons that are in my graveyard to my deck in order to fusion summon the Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon (Light, Dragon, Level 12, 4500 ATK, 3800 DEF.) And now the other effect of Ultimate Fusion activates! I can destroy face up cards you control equal to the number of Blue-Eyes White Dragons that I used as fusion material." Kaiba said.
"So I'll destroy your Eternal Soul trap card. And now the other effect of your Eternal Soul trap activates! When it's destroyed and sent to your graveyard, you destroy all monsters you control!"
"Damn it!" Yami said as his remaining Dark Magician was destroyed.
"Now, this duel is over! First, I'll attack you directly with Dictator of D. (Yami: 1800 LP). Now, I'll finish you off with a direct attack from Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon!" Kaiba said.
"Not quite, Kaiba! I discard Kuriboh from my hand to the graveyard to negate the damage from that battle." Yami said.
"Heh. Whatever. You've only bought yourself a single turn. I end my turn." Kaiba said.
"All right, Kaiba. If I have one turn left, then I have to make it count! I draw! Just what I needed!" Yami said. Kaiba's eyes narrowed.
"You played a good duel, Kaiba, but not good enough! First, I activate the effect of the card that I just drew! By revealing Palladium Oracle Mahad when I draw it, I can special summon it to the field from my hand! (Light, Spellcaster, Level 7, 2500 ATK, 2100 DEF.) Next, I activate the spell card Fusion Deployment! You remember what this does, right Kaiba? I reveal Dark Paladin from my extra deck (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 8, 2900 ATK, 2400 DEF.) in order to special summon Dark Magician from my hand! (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 7, 2500 ATK, 2100 DEF.)" Yami said.
"Heh! What good will that do? Those monsters are too weak to be any threat to me. Dictator of D. lets me pick your attack target if I control a Blue-Eyes monster, and you can't target or destroy my Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon with card effects." Kaiba said.
"That may be, but I don't need to target your dragon. Did you forget that your True Light trap works just like my Eternal Soul trap? I play the spell card Dark Magic Attack! If I control a Dark Magician, this card destroys all spell and trap cards my opponent controls! And because True Light has been destroyed, every monster you control gets destroyed!"
"WHAT!? NO!" Kaiba said as all of his monsters were destroyed.
"Now Palladium Oracle Mahad, attack him directly!" (Kaiba: 1500 LP). "And now Dark Magician will bring this to an end!" (Kaiba: 0 LP)
Kaiba fell to his hands and knees and hit the ground in frustration. Yami walked up to Kaiba and extended a hand. Kaiba looked up for a moment, then just gave a resigned smirk and took it.
"This isn't going to keep happening, Yami! One day I'll beat you." Kaiba said.
"Perhaps so. Now... about the penalty." Yami said seductively.
Kaiba blushed beet red, because he knew that he was in for the wildest night of his life.

Author A/N:
Sorry it took so long to get chapter 5 up and running! Hopefully you've all enjoyed the series up until now! By the way, the "penalty game" was a reference to the manga. Anyone who's never read the manga should, because Yami was one sadistic son of a bitch in the manga!
