“Do you
think he should’ve gone out?”
Yami looked
up from the book he was reading and smiled at Ryou thoughtfully; he just now
realized how little this boy knew about his new lover. “Don’t worry about Bakura, he can take care
of himself.”
Ryou
nodded, letting Yami return to his book.
Despite Yami’s demeanor, Ryou felt unusually at ease in his
presence. The man was striking to look
at, with blood-red eyes and the most exotic hair he’d ever seen, but his
personality was just as striking. Yami
was incredibly charismatic and self-confident, but Ryou was slightly unnerved
by the faint darkness lurking behind his eyes.
In that way he was a lot like Bakura, with many unexplored fathoms in
the depths of his soul. This may be
what drew Ryou to them in the first place, like a moth to a flame.
Ryou tried
once again to focus on the book in his lap.
Yami had quite an impressive library and was kind enough to allow him
free reign. Ryou was a third of the way
through Chuck Palahniuk’s Lullaby and was finding it increasingly
disturbing. Needless to say he was
enjoying it tremendously. Despite the
draw of the novel, his mind kept wandering back to Bakura, like a tongue to a
sore tooth.
“Where did
he go?”
“If he
wanted you to know, he would have told you himself.”
“I’m sorry,
I didn’t mean-“
“Don’t
worry about it.” Yami’s smile was
genuine and soothing. “Let’s just say
he had some errands to run.”
They had
been here for less than 24 hours and Ryou couldn’t help but feel surreal;
things seem to move fast around here.
Of course having Bakura gone wasn’t helping this feeling- being left
alone with a guy he barely knew was enough to send him over the edge. Ryou wasn’t worried that he wouldn’t come back,
but that he might get into some trouble.
Bakura didn’t react well to the information about Marik, and Ryou was
concerned he might to something to draw attention to himself. The page in front of him blurred out of
focus-God he was so tired. He looked
out the window and noticed a fine rain falling, making him feel cozy in his
chair. Suddenly he was pulled out of
his thoughts by a soft knock on the door.
Yami looked
up, but made no effort to move. The
door opened and in walked a tall man, shaking water out of his honey colored
hair. He smiled at Yami, raising a hand
in greeting as he slipped out of his shoes.
“I’m sorry
I’m late.”
“Not a
problem, Jou.” Yami motioned to Ryou,
who was looking at the visitor warily.
“I’d like you to meet Ryou, Bakura’s new boyfriend. Ryou, this is Jonouchi, a friend of mine.”
Ryou
attempted a smile, still unsure. “Nice
to meet you.” He wished Bakura were
here.
Jou’s
initial surprise wore off and he moved towards the boy in the chair with his
hand extended. “Pleased to meet
you. I heard that Bakura was coming
back, I didn’t know he was here already.”
Ryou’s
voice was soft in response. “He’s
actually out right now.”
“Oh…hopefully
I’ll catch up with him soon.”
Yami stood
up, motioning for Jou to follow. “If
you’ll excuse us.”
Ryou nodded
and watched them head into the kitchen, noticing Yami wrapping an arm around
the other man’s waist. He was relieved
to be alone, left to stare at the rain running down the glass and letting his
mind wander. The book felt solid in his
lap, and he ran a finger over the cover, feeling the raised lettering on the
dust jacket like Braille. He wanted so
badly to feel solid, but it was slipping away from him. The last day was a blur in his memory,
passing by like snapshots in his mind.
Ryou was left to wonder if he really lived it or if it were part of a
story someone had told. Was it all
real? Was he real? He wished again for Bakura, an anchor for
his confused mind. He was so
tired.
Fifteen minutes later, just as he
was starting to doze, the two reemerged.
Jou carrying a small black backpack slung over his shoulder and
laughing. “It was nice meeting you
Ryou, tell Bakura I said ‘hi’.”
“I will.”
Jou looked
at Yami and grinned. “Bye, see you in a
few days.”
“Don’t
forget what I told you.”
Jou’s eyes
hardened, his smile gone. “Don’t worry-
I’ll take care of it.”
Ryou kept
his eyes on his book, trying to mind his own business. He didn’t like how quickly that guy turned,
the tone of his voice was chilling. He
looked at his watch, 4:30. Bakura had
been gone for over 3 hours now. As if
sensing his anxiety, Yami stood and motioned towards the kitchen.
“I was
going to fix something to eat. Why
don’t you give me a hand? It’ll take
your mind off things.”
Ryou set
his book on the end table and stood, following Yami into the kitchen. There’s something about preparing a meal
with someone that creates a certain sense of camaraderie. Soon the two were laughing and talking, Ryou
sharing tidbits of his life with the older man.
“So, how
long has it been since you lived at home?”
“It’s been
about three years since my last foster home, ten since I lived with my
parents. They lost their parental
rights shortly after I was removed by social services and then they just
disappeared…POOF. I have no idea where
they are.”
“Why did
you get removed in the first place?”
Yami’s eyes were sharp, but his tone gentle.
Ryou shook
his head, smiling ruefully.
“Prostitution. They were working
out of the house. My mother had a few
friends and my Father played the ‘heavy’.
Not the most wholesome place for a kid I guess.”
Ryou hated
to think of his parents. It’s not how
they raised him that fucked him up- it was how quickly they gave up on him and
moved on. He shook his head slightly to
clear his thoughts and focused on the vegetables he was washing. Soon the meal was done and they ate in a
comfortable silence. Ryou liked that
Yami was intuitive enough to not press things, although something told him Yami
was just biding his time. They cleaned
up, doing dishes and making idle conversation.
Ryou set a plate aside for Bakura for when he gets back.
It was 7 o’clock by the time they
finished up and Ryou was dead on his feet.
The past couple of days were really catching up on him. “I’m going to turn in. I know it’s early, but I’m beat. When Bakura gets back-“
“Don’t
worry- he’ll understand. Listen, don’t
worry about him, he’ll be back.”
“I
know.” Ryou nodded and attempted a
tired smile. “Thank you so much for
everything…good night.”
“Sleep
well, Ryou.”
Ryou was
dead to the world minutes after his head hit the pillow- all the stress had
taken its toll. He woke up disoriented
in the middle of the night to the sound of raised voices. He could hear enough to tell it was Bakura
and that he was angry, but not enough to make out the words. The other voice belonged to Yami and Ryou
shivered at the power in it. His relief
that Bakura was back was enough to keep him from worrying about what was going
on now; at least he was home. He tried
to wait for Bakura to come downstairs, but wasn’t able to keep his eyes open
long enough; sleep quickly dragged him under once again.
“I said
NO!” Bakura hissed, trying to keep his
voice down so as not to wake his sleeping lover. “We already talked about this.
I’ll do it, there’s no need to drag Ryou into any of this. Fuck Yami, you don’t even need another
guy!”
“Listen to
yourself, Bakura! How long do you think
you can hide it from him? He’s not
fucking stupid-quite the opposite. It’s
only a matter of time before he asks.
Then what? Are you going to lie
to him?” Yami’s eyes flashed fire,
hands fisted, trying to control his frustration. “Admit it, you fucking freak!
He would be perfect.”
“No!” Bakura got right into Yami’s face,
seething. “I’m not hiding anything, and
I’ll tell him when the time’s right.
You aren’t going to use him!”
“And what
if he decides on his own?”
Bakura
slammed his fist on the table before turning and fleeing downstairs. Yami may run things, but he was overstepping
himself now. Bakura’s eyes adjusted to
the dark, the glow of the alarm clock just bright enough to allow him to see
the outline of Ryou sleeping deep under the covers. He stripped out of his clothes, trying to shake off his
anger. Goddamned Yami, trying to
control everything; they only needed to stay here a little while longer until
they could start out on their own. He
slipped into bed, wrapping is arms around Ryou and spooning him close. The feel of Ryou’s body against his was
enough to relax him. He wanted so badly
to wake Ryou with his mouth, eager and hungry- but remembered how exhausted he
looked this morning; the dark circles under his eyes. Ryou needed his sleep, and for that he’d abstain. He fell asleep to the sound of Ryou’s easy
breathing and slowly beating heart.
Ryou woke
before dawn, immediately aware of the warmth cuddling close. He turned and looked at the peaceful
expression on Bakura’s face, kissing his slightly parted lips and grinning when
he wrinkled his nose in response. He
laid his head on Bakura’s muscular chest, listening to his heart and feeling
safe. Soon they’d get their lives going
again…everything was going to be fine, wasn’t it?
A/N: Oooh, the plot
thickens! Tell me what you think! Input is my friend, so please let me
know. Sorry this chapter is so short,
but it’s a necessary evil…
