New Arrival: Nakago
There was silence in the room for all of five seconds as the three men eyed the new arrival and he boldly returned their stares. None of them were even aware Laurel and Larva had arrived, though Laurel had stomped like an elephant the entire way into the room. Their attention was focused entirely on the newcomer. And then Aya demanded, “Who the hell are you?”
The dark haired man gave him a blatantly impudent grin before mockingly replying, “I am but a humble writer.”
“Tell us your name,” Aya bit out through gritted teeth.
The other man crossed his arms over his chest and widened his smile. “Why should I? I have no idea who you are or why I’m here, so I don’t think it’d be very wise to tell you anything.”
Aya looked like he was about to cleave the smirking author in two with his katana, so Laurel stepped in front of Larva and said, “His name is Shigure Sohma.”
Three heads immediately turned in her direction as if startled; excluding Carrot since he had already been looking at her, aware of her presence the moment she stepped around Larva and into view since his girl radar was phenomenal.
“How did you know that,” Seto and Shigure simultaneously inquired, casting surprised glances at one another as they spoke in unison.
Laurel smiled at their discomfort as well as Shigure’s astonishment. “Didn’t I tell you: I’m omniscient.”
Her deliberately sweet tone and smart mouthed response brought a suspicious frown to Seto’s face, but Shigure was all smiles as he sauntered over to Laurel with an appreciative gleam in his eyes. “Tell me,” he whispered in a stage voice, “Are you a high school girl?”
This question earned puzzled glances from everyone but Laurel, who realized he was in fact serious. It was sometimes a curse being petite, she was often considered to be far younger then she actually was. Laurel rolled her eyes before muttering, “No.”
The crestfallen expression that appeared on Shigure’s face was downright comical, and Laurel laughed in spite of herself, which immediately had the man grinning again. “Oh well, I suppose no one can be perfect,” he cheerfully announced.
“I think Laurel comes close,” Carrot volunteered, dancing out of striking range from a glowering Aya.
Shigure gave her a blatant once over, as if trying to decide whether or not Carrot was correct, and Laurel felt Larva shift closer to her in a protective manner so that his shadow fell across Shigure. The man glanced up at Larva, imposing mask and all, but if he was intimidated he certainly didn’t show it. “All joking aside, I am rather curious how you know my name. I’m certain I’ve never met you before,” Shigure declared.
Laurel just shrugged and said, “We’ve never met, but I’ve seen you.”
“I wish you’d have introduced yourself,” he said with a leer and a suggestive tone.
Laurel knew better then to take his flirtations seriously. Just like Carrot, Shigure made passes at every pretty girl he met, though he was generally more discreet.
Behind Shigure, Laurel thought she heard Seto grumble, “Not another one.”
Carrot was too busy trying to figure out how to sit on one of the low couches in the room to pay attention to what was going on, so he wasn’t insulted by Seto’s comment.
Aya had been silent for some time, but as Laurel glanced at him, she noticed he was watching her with a rather speculative look. She found herself wondering why, but had little time to ponder the thought because Shigure started talking again. “Well, now that you’ve spoiled my fun and given away my name, suppose you tell me who you are,” he suggested with a charming smile.
Laurel was getting a bit tired of having to do introductions, and she hoped there weren’t going to be too many more people arriving. At this rate, it might save time to just make name tags for everyone. She decided to introduce everyone, not just herself, shooting off each man’s name as she pointed at him before moving on to the next one. Shigure gave her an amused smile, obviously sensing her irritation. When she introduced Larva, Shigure gave the man a surprised look, just like the other guys had, and Laurel had to repress a sigh at his comical expression. “I take it you’ve had to do this before,” he teased her when she finally finished.
She cast him an irritated look. “Whatever gave you that idea?”
Her sarcastic tone earned a genuine laugh from Shigure, and he said, “I can see we’re going to get along quite well.”
“Sorry to interrupt, but I think we should all get back to the main room,” Seto suddenly replied, drawing everyone’s attention to him.
“Main room,” Shigure repeated with a puzzled look on his face as he glanced around the Oriental living room. “Aren’t we already in it?”
“No,” Seto answered him, “We are in the main room of your personal wing, not the main room of the house.”
“My wing,” Shigure echoed.
“Yes, I’ll explain as much as I can once we get to the main room of the house,” Seto assured him.
“Hey we should name the main room,” Carrot crowed, leaning forward in his characteristic energetic manner, shaking the couch with such force that it started to tip over, causing him to flail about wildly.
Aya stalked over to the couch and kicked it upright, hauling Carrot to his feet with a glare. “What are you babbling about?”
“I just think things will get too confusing if we don’t name the bigger rooms,” Carrot cheerfully replied, undaunted by Aya’s scowl as he yanked free of the redhead’s grip.
“Good idea,” Laurel agreed, and Carrot shot her a puppy dog look of adoration which she ignored.
“This is all very confusing,” Shigure announced.
“You have no idea,” Aya muttered as he swept out of the room without a backwards glance.
“Well, he’s a pleasant fellow,” Shigure grumbled.
Carrot nodded in agreement, for once catching the sarcasm.
Everyone was making their way out into the main hallway of the house when the sound of metal striking against metal reached their ears. Larva heard it first and, with lightning reflexes, pushed Laurel behind him so he was shielding her. She glared at him, thinking he’d lost his mind, until she heard Seto say, “What’s that noise?”
“Swords,” was Larva’s brief response.
“Swords,” Carrot asked, clearly puzzled. “But didn’t that archer guy say we weren’t supposed to fight?”
“I have no idea,” Seto, Laurel and Shigure chorused, but Larva nodded. He had heard the bowman’s warning, if nothing else the Immortal had said.
The four men flanked Laurel and quickly walked down the hallway, following the clashing of metal, and it wasn’t long before they had reached the source of the sounds. Just outside the entrance to yet another wing, Aya was locked in battle with a tall, imposing blond man dressed in incredibly intricate blue armor. He moved with lethal grace, his handsome face every bit as cold as Aya’s.
“Hey who’s that guy,” Carrot asked before turning to Seto and saying, “And, uh, wasn’t that wing empty a little while ago?”
Seto glanced into the front room of the wing just beyond the swordsmen. “Yes it was. It seems to have changed to suit the newest arrival, just as Shigure’s did while we were walking through it.”
“Will someone please tell me what is going on,” Shigure demanded.
“No one really knows,” Laurel answered him, watching Aya and the blond circle each other, strike and part, each a master with a blade and well matched.
“That’s just great,” Shigure muttered, but Laurel ignored him, hypnotized by the beauty of the two fighters, even as she had to fight to suppress a shiver of dread as her gaze flitted over the striking features of the blond once more.
It was a face she knew well, and one she really wished she wasn’t seeing at the moment. Because if she had to be stuck in a house full of anime characters, Nakago of the Seiryu Seven was one of the last people she wanted to be living with.
