Bounty Hunter
Chapter 5
@-->-->----
The school halls were as full of bustling, gossiping and laughing students as they always were first thing on a Monday morning. Jou wove his way through the crowds easily, pretending to be completely focused on the company and chatter of his friends, while in reality keeping watch for a certain brunette with sapphire eyes.
He wasn't exactly *looking* for Kaiba. Jou was merely wandering around the school and watching the crowds. If he happened to end up where Kaiba was, fine. If he didn't, that was fine too. It wasn't like he wanted to see him or anything. He certainly didn't want to speak to him about what had happened on Saturday night. As far as he was concerned, the less said about that the better. But... Jou knew he should at least thank Kaiba for the ride home. The brunette had been more considerate than he would have thought possible.
When he didn't see him in the halls or at the lockers, Jou wasn't worried. He rarely saw Kaiba outside of class. There was some speculation among the students that Kaiba didn't actually walk around the school, but was teleported directly into the classrooms by Kaiba Corp. technology. It would certainly explain how he always managed to be the first one to arrive each and every time. Jou was still snickering over the thought as he entered his computer class and looked up the back, where Kaiba always sat. His smile became a frown. The brunette wasn't there.
Ordinarily, it wouldn't have been a big deal. Kaiba often had to leave class early or miss classes due to his commitments to his company. But after the events on Saturday night, seeing Kaiba's seat empty now caused an odd tightness in Jou's chest. He tried to ignore it as he went to his desk.
Jou was concentrating so hard on ignoring the unfamiliar feeling that he didn't see the stack of papers on the teacher's desk. He brushed them with his arm and jumped in shock when they all toppled to the floor. "Oh great."
"Need some help with that, Jou?" Yugi smiled as he turned back to look at his friend. Jou shook his head.
"Nah. It's right, Yug. I'll have 'em picked up in no time." He crouched down and began gathering the papers up, mentally groaning when he realised what they were. Apparently, the teacher had decided to start off a new week by giving them a new assignment. A long assignment, judging by how many pages made up each one.
Jou was still picking up the papers when the teacher came inside. She wasn't alone, though.
Miss Himura paused at her desk, so intent on her conversation with the headmaster that she didn't notice Jou. "I must say, that is one of the most unusual excuses Mr Kaiba has ever given for not attending school."
The headmaster sighed. "I know. As much as I hate to do it, I'm going to have to speak with him about this. Having to miss a class or two due to his responsibilities towards his company is one thing, but missing an entire day to 'see a man about a Ming vase'?" The tone of his voice revealed the man's confusion. "I thought I was fairly conversant with the euphemisms used by teenagers today, but this one has me baffled."
At the words 'Ming vase', Jou had frozen in place. The tightness in his chest was joined by a sick feeling in his stomach, but at least that was a familiar sensation. He knew what it meant. It was his instincts kicking in and telling him that something was very wrong.
If there was one lesson Jou had learned in the past, it was to always trust his instincts.
He stood up abruptly, dropping the papers onto the desk with a heavy thud as he looked at the two startled adults. "It means that Kaiba's in big trouble."
Jou took off, racing past them and out of the room before they could do more than blink in surprise.

Since the first class had already started, the halls were deserted and there was no one to stop him. As he ran through the school to the front door, Jou's mind flashed back to a conversation he'd had the night before.
Kaiba's comments about the break-in to his home had given him something to think about all day Sunday, as he'd lain in bed resting his aching head. The thought that there was someone out there who had pretended to be him had greatly concerned Jou, so he'd decided to see if he could find out who it had been.
When he'd felt up to it that night, he'd paid a visit to Mirokuri Ichibana, the man who paid him decent money for whatever he stole in the guise of The Cat. He'd casually asked if any Ming vases had come onto the underground market recently. The results had been surprising.
Ichibana had heard about someone getting their hands on a vase but refusing to part with it, saying that his client wanted to keep it. He had warned Jou not to tangle with the thief, since he was known to be trouble. But what had Jou worried was what he had said about the client.
"Anyone who can command that kind of loyalty from this guy has to be powerful and major bad news."
As the memory of the words ran through his mind, Joey burst through the front doors of the school and hurried down the stairs and towards the road. It wasn't until he hit the pavement out in front of the school that he realised there was one flaw to his plan to go help Kaiba.
He had absolutely no idea where Kaiba was.

Kaiba was not happy. He had spent the previous day tracking down the man who had broken into his home and he was not at all pleased by what he had learned along the way. The information had made him determined to sever all ties with his former 'partner', however that was proving to be almost more trouble than it was worth.
So far, he'd spent almost an hour waiting for the man to show up at his office. Considering that he didn't like waiting even five minutes in tasteful and elegant surroundings, having to endure an hour spent in a room that was a tribute to beige, and only slightly larger than a broom cupboard, was pure torture.
By the time Takamora Saiyukiro finally walked into his office, he found himself faced with one very irritated brunette with sapphire eyes so cold their gaze sent a chill up his spine. He was only taken aback for an instant though, then he rallied by giving Kaiba a beaming smile as he walked in and sat behind his desk.
"Ice! So good of you to visit me! No, don't tell me why you're here. I bet I know. You're here to tell me that you want to track The Cat, am I right? I know I'm right." His smile slipped only slightly when his only response was a deepening of the scowl his visitor was wearing.
"First of all, I gave up the name 'Ice' when I retired, over a year ago." Kaiba's eyes flashed but Saiyukiro just smiled.
"Oh come now, there's no need to be coy. I know that you didn't really retire back then. I know that someone with your... passion for the work we both do couldn't simply give it up. I did something to upset you and you went to work for someone else, right? Come now, why don't we put whatever happened back then behind us, hmm? I apologise for whatever I did that made you angry with me. There. Now why don't we become friends again, Ice?" His steel-grey eyes were suddenly intent. "I don't know who you've been working for since then, but whatever they pay you... I'll double it."
Saiyukiro was so focused on his visitor that he failed to notice the door to his office as it silently opened, just a crack. It went unnoticed by Kaiba also, since he was standing facing Saiyukiro's desk with his back to the door.
Kaiba shook his head. "You're wrong. Completely wrong. I did *not* go to work for anyone else. I retired. As for money, your... offer... is meaningless to me." He smirked, a mocking twist of his lips, but his eyes remained as hard and as cold as the name he had taken for his bounty-hunting persona. "This was never a 'passion' for me. It was a hobby. Something to pass the time with. I gave it up for one very simple reason. I grew bored with it. Incidentally... we may have worked together for a time, but we were never friends."
The smile slipped from Saiyukiro's face and he stared at the brunette in shock. "No. That... That can't be. You... You're the best there is. You have a real talent for this work. I've never seen anyone catch someone as quickly. You shouldn't give up on such a gift so easily!"
His obvious alarm gave way to what he obviously thought was a winning smile, although it merely looked smug. "Why don't you give it one more try? How about it? I have a nice juicy case all lined up for you. The Cat. Doesn't that name just make you want to hunt him down and turn him in? It's a good bounty. A really good bounty. There are a lot of wealthy people around town right now who are terrified that they will be The Cat's next target. Just think of it. A good bounty on top of the challenge of catching someone like The Cat. How can you resist that?"
Kaiba's expression shifted slightly, from mocking sarcasm to amusement. "Very easily."
Saiyukiro frowned at him, looking more than a little uncertain. "Ah... But I thought... I heard that you had also been a victim of The Cat. Surely... you want revenge for that?"
"Already done." Kaiba's eyes gleamed as he smirked. "I must admit, I did track down the one who intruded in my home. He is now in police custody. I don't expect him to be free again for quite some time, since he was caught in the middle of a robbery."
Saiyukiro gasped and then smiled broadly. "Ah! You were only joking before! You had already caught The Cat! I knew you could do it!"
Kaiba shook his head. "No. I said I tracked down the one who intruded in my home. He was not The Cat. He was just a hired thief. But then..." Kaiba's eyes locked on Saiyukiro, their gaze filled with contempt and disgust. "You already know that, don't you? Since you were the one who hired him!"
Saiyukiro's eyes widened and he tensed. "What? I... I don't know what you're talking about! Really, Ice, do you believe everything a copycat tells you? Copy 'cat'... Get it?" He smiled weakly.
Kaiba smiled, suddenly bearing a striking resemblance to a certain dragon. "In this case, yes. I believe every word he told me. He told me some rather interesting things, in fact."
Saiyukiro's head bowed for a moment. When he looked up again, a strained smile curved his lips. "Oh? Well... whatever he said, it's obvious to me that he can't be trusted. I mean, he spoke to you after you'd caught him, right? He probably would have said anything to avoid your turning him in to the police."
As he spoke, he moved. Standing up, he walked around his desk and clapped a hand on Kaiba's shoulder before the brunette realised what he was planning to do. Kaiba immediately shrugged the offensive touch off and stepped back, putting a few more feet between himself and the man he detested.
"As I said before, the police apprehended him in the middle of a robbery. I spoke to him earlier. He had no idea who I was or why I was talking to him. It's amazing just how much information you can get from someone if you buy them enough alcohol." Kaiba smirked.
"Ah. I see. That's a shame." Saiyukiro's eyes suddenly hardened as he pulled a gun out of his coat pocket and levelled it at Kaiba's chest. As the brunette tensed in shock, Saiyukiro smiled sadly. "I hate to see such talent go to waste, but it seems that you know too much. Of course, there's always the possibility that Minoto lied to you, but I really can't afford to take that chance. Such a pity. We worked so well together. Goodbye, Ice."
As he began to pull the trigger, the door burst open and Jou raced towards them. As he leaped into a flying tackle, a single gunshot echoed through the room.
