Best Left Forgotten
Chapter Six
"You hold the answers deep within your own mind. Consciously,
you've forgotten it. That's the way the human mind works. Whenever something is
too unpleasant, to shameful for us to entertain, we
reject it. We erase it from our memories.
But the imprint is always there… Nothing is ever really forgotten."
- Original Author Unknown
It killed him to have to ask for help, but he couldn’t make
it on his own. But Honda’s house wasn’t
too far away from where Seto lived, and he took his time walking there. Honda was at work of course, but he could
remember sitting on the front porch before.
When he did come home, it was late evening, and he had been
shocked to find Jou on his doorstep. Jou
was busy reading the little book in his lap, a tense look on his face.
Honda demanded an explanation, but Jou just asked to be
taken home.
Yugi was waiting there for them, looking like he’d been
crying. The following hour was
overwhelming. Honda had to be caught up,
and all the secrets had to be put on the table.
Jou knew about the GAD, knew about their attempt to hide Seto; they had
to know what Seto really was. Honda was
nearly floored with that news. It took
Yugi, his eyes suddenly dark and seemingly taller, to snap him out of his
shocked anger.
“Now what?” Yugi asked, looking
near tears again. He really did cry a
lot, Jou thought. “Is Seto okay? Is he
mad at us?”
Jou shook his head slowly.
“No, he’s not mad, I don’t think.
He blamed himself, not you. I
think he’s happy with what we’ve decided.”
“And you?” Honda asked, looking miserable now that Yugi had
calmed him. “Do you hate us?”
Jou shook his head again.
“I love you both. You guys have
stuck by me through this hell. You’ve
taken care of me even though I’ve hated every second of it, and I haven’t
exactly made it easy for you.”
“So now what?” Yugi asked again.
Jou bit his lip. He
wasn’t sure they were going to take this very well. “Look, I love you both. Even though I don’t remember, I love you
based on what’s happened since. And
those five years, all that stuff I’ve forgotten, maybe it’s best left that
way. Maybe I don’t need to remember it. I don’t have that general whatever thing, I
don’t have any secrets, and we can just forget all of it.”
“So we just go on like nothing’s happened?” Honda
asked. “You just give up five years of
your life? And we just let you? You don’t want any of it back?”
Jou looked down, at the picture he’d still refused to let
go. “Some of it I wish I could get
back. But it’s not up to me to pick and
choose what I remember and what I forget.
And I don’t need to. I know who I
am; I’m still me. It’s like I’m getting
a second chance.”
Neither Honda nor Yugi looked convinced. They’d spent the better part of the past
month trying to help him remember, and they weren’t ready to forget.
“Look, I don’t want to remember, okay?” Jou asked
pleadingly. “Please, just let me
forget. Just leave it that way.”
“If that’s what you want,” Yugi said firmly, wiping his eyes
with the back of his hand. “They’re your
memories, and I meant what I said that first night. I’ll remember for both of us, and we’ll just
make new memories.”
Jou finally relaxed.
Once Yugi had agreed, then Honda would follow eventually. He fell back onto the floor. Today had been completely exhausting, and his
entire left side ached. In fact, today
was already turning into early morning.
He would have to sleep eventually.
He didn’t even remember closing his eyes. He awoke on the couch, sitting up slowly and
trying to figure out what had brought him out of sleep.
It was a knock at the door.
“I’m getting it Jou, don’t hurt yourself,” Yugi said, coming out of the
kitchenette and drying his hands like he’d been doing dishes. Jou chuckled.
Yugi sounded just like a little house wife.
He stopped short when he saw Seto standing in the
doorway. His eyes sought out Jou right
away, and the blonde blushed, wondering what he looked like, having slept the
day away on the couch.
“I’m here to pick up Jou,” Seto said to Yugi, almost
defensively.
The smaller man grinned at him. “I assumed.
But I’m afraid Jou’s not quite awake yet, so you might have to wait a
bit. Come on in, I have my own apologies
to make while we wait anyway.”
Jou tried to get up, to run to the bathroom, but his leg had
grown stiff from over use the day before.
He fell to the floor, landing hard on his left side,
and groaned painfully.
“I’ve got him,” he heard Seto say, and then strong arms were
picking him up carefully. Honda said he
hadn’t put any weight back on yet, and Seto was proving it. Jou would have been embarrassed, if he wasn’t
in so much pain.
“I’ll leave you alone,” Yugi said, and Jou heard him go out
the front door.
“Sorry,” Jou said, his voice slightly breathless. “I don’t think I can go anywhere tonight.”
Seto chuckled softly.
“That’s fine. Most of our dates
were right here on this couch anyway.”
Jou closed his eyes.
There was no point in waiting.
“This is our first date,” he said firmly. “There were no others. You can’t talk about it like there were, or I
can’t put it behind me. I don’t want to
remember.”
Seto stared at him.
“So you want to forget all of it?” he asked after a minute.
Jou looked around, finding the book and the photographs. “You need to take these. I read some of the book. It’s mostly a
list.”
Seto looked at he book
thoughtfully. “A list of what?”
“There’s all kinds of pills for
GAD, but I wouldn’t take any of them.
One of the things that was supposed to help was
to list all the things I was afraid of.
Nearly all of them are about you, even before we were dating.”
Seto tensed as if stung, and Jou rushed in to explain. “I was so obsessed with you, anything we had was poisoned before it even started. I wish – I wish I could keep some of the good
things.” He wished he could remember
some of the physical things; it was terrifying to think that Seto knew him that
way, but he was completely clueless.
“But you can’t chose what you remember,” Seto said
slowly. “It really is starting over.”
Jou nodded, then added slowly. “But, I won’t ask you to forget. So I want you to keep these.”
Seto nodded slowly.
“I’ll keep them Jou, and I won’t forget.
Maybe someday, when you’re ready, you’ll remember too.”
Jou nodded, accepting that.
Seto set the book and pictures behind him, and turned his attention back
to Jou. The blonde looked awkward at
first, lost. Seto was afraid to do
anything, to rush him.
After another moment’s hesitation, Jou leaned over so he
rested against the other. He relaxed
slowly when an arm was wrapped cautiously around him. “Happy anniversary, Seto,” he said quietly.
