Yami ran a hand through his spiky, multi-hued hair. “Now, we’ve figured out where they are, and
I think I already have an idea of how to get them back.” The Pharaoh turned and, with a slight smirk
watched the men down below who were just starting to clear away some of the
debris from the ruined duel platform.
“You know how to get them out of there?” Mokuba asked, jumping up from the couch and
moving quickly to stand beside Yami before he, too, turned to look at the
arena. “What do we have to do?”
Yami turned and gave the boy a smile, setting a hand on top
of the other’s head gently. “You’re
going to play the biggest part in this, Mokuba.”
“Huh? What am I
going to do?” The boy looked up at the
Pharaoh quizzically, brow furrowed, as the rest of the teens shifted their gaze
back and forth between the two.
“It’s simple, really,” Yami said, hand dropping back to his
side as he paced slowly back and forth in front of the window. “You’re going to have those men down there
rebuild the arena, exactly the way it was when we arrived, right down to the
smallest detail. We’ll need it restored
for my plan to work.”
“Why do we need it restored?” Mokuba looked down at the ruined arena with a confused
expression. “At this point it’d be
easier to just rebuild one from scratch.”
“Because, we need to recreate everything as best we
can. The setting, the equipment, and
the magic,” Yami sighed softly, narrowing his eyes. “Or at least as close as we can get. Given how they were transported to the Dominion of the Beasts,
and the fact that it was mixed magic that caused everything to happen, no one
magic will be able to bring them back alone.”
Duke’s green eyes narrowed, as he stepped up to the window,
gazing down at the workers as well.
“You mean we’re going to have to recreate what happened, and hope we can
get something close enough to the right combination of magic, to open the
doorway again.”
“Precisely,” Yami nodded, looking over at Duke, hands
sliding into his pockets as he stopped pacing, instead leaning one shoulder
against the wall. “I’ll do my best to
contact the inhabitants of that realm, I’m not sure…if I can get a clear
message across, usually it’s them that contacts Yugi and I,” he said honestly,
not wanting to lead his friends to believe he had any real control in this
situation. “But I haven’t heard
anything from that side since they were transported over to the other realm.”
The Pharaoh frowned, looking troubled by that.
“Well, I guess they must be pretty busy with their new
arrivals,” Tea ventured, walking up to stand beside the Pharaoh as well,
fingers toying idly with the hem of her shirt.
“I know Joey would be a handful by himself, with his habit of freaking
out over everything.” She smiled when
the rest of the teens chuckled softly at the statement.
“Yeah, he would be, and Kaiba can be a handful too,”
Tristan chimed in, still holding tightly to Joey’s duel disk. “Joey’d be freaking out, and Kaiba’s
probably denying the whole thing, trying to write it off as a bad dream he’s
having after being knocked unconscious by the explosion.”
Mokuba looked up at Tristan with a serious expression, then
laughed, holding one hand in front of his mouth, the other still clutching
Kaiba’s disk to his chest. “You know,
that’s probably exactly what he’s doing right now. Yelling at everybody and trying to figure out if he’s dreaming,
or just trapped in another virtual reality game, again.” The raven-haired boy’s smile faded then, and
he reached for Kaiba’s deck, pulling out the blank Blue Eyes White Dragon card,
staring at the white square where the picture of the majestic beast should have
been.
Tristan watched him silently for a moment, then his fingers
touched Joey’s deck, sliding out the Red Eyes card left on Joey’s side of the
arena. His brown eyes widened when he
flipped it over and took a look at the card.
“Hey, guys, what does this mean?” he called, holding up the card.
“What?” the Pharaoh’s head snapped up, shock visible on his
face before he stepped forward, quickly plucking the card from Tristan’s
fingers. “How strange…” he murmured,
looking at the red spot that seemed to be slowly spreading from the center of
the white square where the dragon should have been.
“Do you think…it’s a sign they’re coming back?” Tea asked,
looking around at the others hopefully.
“Maybe, who knows?” Tristan said, but his voice too held a
trace of hope. “Maybe the picture’s
coming back,” he glanced over at Mokuba.
“Is anything happening with your brother’s card?”
Mokuba stared at Joey’s card, then his brother’s, a cold
feeling building in the pit of his stomach.
There was no change in Kaiba’s card, and for some reason, the slowly
growing spot on Joey’s card looked like a spreading bloodstain to him. “No, nothing’s happening at all,” he said
quietly, holding up the card for the others to see. *Seto…* he thought mournfully, unable to will away the apprehension
building inside him. *I’ve got a
feeling something bad happened to Joey.
Please, big brother, come home safe, and I hope you can bring Joey back
alive and in one piece, too.*
~~oOo~~
Timaeus
finished cleaning Joey’s wounds, setting the cloth aside before he went to
stand before Seto. “Your actions have
consequences, Kaiba. Whether or not you
believe this is real, for Joey this is very real, and now very dangerous. Please, suspend your disbelief for now, and
try to adapt to your surroundings. I
don’t want to see either of you get hurt, again.”
Kaiba stood still and silent for several moments, staring
at the prone form of Joey on the bed as Critias and Helmos bandaged his
wounds. His brows drew together, a
troubled frown on his face before he turned away quickly. “Whatever,” he growled, striding out of the
room.
Kaiba exited the building, pausing as the ground
shook beneath his feet, telling him the dragons were still nearby, and
extremely agitated as they’d ended up face to face once again. He flinched a bit when a high-pitched roar
rent the air, the Red Eyes obviously closer to him, sounding right around the
corner. The sound of the Blue Eyes’
roar was louder, but offered comfort, rather than being intimidating. He jumped slightly, blue eyes widening when
a hand came down on his shoulder.
Turning, the CEO found Timaeus looking at him with an unreadable
expression.
“Stay out of sight for just a little longer, Kaiba,”
he said quietly. “Once we have a chance
to make sure Joey’s going to be okay, we can calm the Red Eyes down and
convince it to move away a bit. Of
course you’ll have to do the same with your Blue Eyes.” The Legendary knight sighed softly as he
peered around the corner, and then shook his head. “They both still look ready to battle, but I don’t want to see
any more of them get hurt. We’ve had
enough serious injuries for today.”
Kaiba snorted and narrowed his blue eyes at the
other man. “Fine, whatever. Either way, I’m getting out of here.” With a flare of white trench coat, Seto
turned and stalked away, heading away from the building, but following the
knight’s advice and keeping it between himself and the dragons so as not to be
seen. Just before he reached the line
of trees marking the beginnings of the forest, he stopped, one hand coming up
to clutch at the pendant he always wore, shaped like a duel monsters card. Blue eyes slid closed as a feeling of warmth
enveloped him, a picture of his little brother flashing in his mind’s eye. “Mokuba…” he murmured, knowing, somehow,
that wherever he was, the younger boy must be thinking of him. His hand tightened on the locket, his own
feelings welling up inside, a bit of guilt and worry for the blond teen that
had been injured, his anger and frustration with his situation, and the
confusion over his new form and abilities that were developing in this…whatever
it was, dream, hologram, alternate reality.
Yes, some part of that intelligent mind was actually toying with the possibility
a parallel universe at this very moment.
~~oOo~~
Mokuba’s eyes snapped open as he felt the rush of emotion,
knowing that it was his brother he was sensing. He looked down at the card gripped between his fingers, the tips
white from pressing so hard against it.
“Seto,” he murmured, tears filling his eyes.
“Mokuba, what’s wrong?” Yami asked, moving over and setting
his hands on the boy’s shoulders.
“I…can feel him, I can feel Seto!” the boy exclaimed,
staring at the card a moment, before he glanced around at the others. “He’s angry, and worried about
something.”
“Worried about where they are and how to get out, I guess,”
Tristan said, shaking his head as he looking down at Joey’s card.
“No, it’s more than that,” Mokuba said, looking up at
Yami. “I think Yugi would be able to
feel Joey, if he held his card. That’s
when I started feeling my brother’s presence…when I held this, and concentrated
on him.”
The Pharaoh nodded slowly, straightening, then walking over
to Tristan, hand held out for the card.
When the dark-haired teen set it gently over Yami’s palm, the shorter
teen stiffened before his eyes slid open, no longer crimson, but amethyst, wide
and innocent.
“Okay, let me give this a shot,” Yugi said, running his
fingertips lightly over the card, before he closed his eyes and concentrated,
focusing on his best friend. *Joey, I
sure hope I can get through to you…*
~~oOo~~
Joey tossed his head, moving his right leg slightly, a
groan passing his lips. The blond teen
winced, then cracked open one hazel eye, looking around blearily. “Yug’, that you?” he asked hoarsely. One hand lifted, running over the bandages
wrapped tightly around his chest, and he groaned again as memories came
flooding back, of flight, and of the blast that knocked him out of the air. “Damn stupid moneybags,” he muttered.
The Dark Magician Girl smiled as she set a hand gently on
his shoulder. “It’s good to see you awake,” she murmured, then blinked as she
felt a strange power surrounding the teen when she touched him. Closing her eyes, she focused, trying to
figure out the source, gasping when she saw a familiar face come to mind. “Oh wow, there’s…a way for them to still
communicate, here?”
Helmos moved up beside the teen, glancing over at Dark
Magician Girl. “What do you mean?” he
asked, narrowing his eyes as he looked down at Joey again.
“I can feel it, it’s Yugi, he’s somehow managed to
establish some kind of connection with Joey.
I wonder,” she mused, turning and looking out the window, “if Kaiba has
felt anything.”
“Well, the three of them are connected, it doesn’t surprise
me that Yugi’s found a way to reach them,” Helmos sighed, then shook his head.
“But getting Kaiba to answer questions about it might prove to be another story
entirely. You know how he feels about
magic.” Both of them rolled their eyes
and sighed.
Joey sighed, lying back on the bed, both eyes closed again
as he relaxed, trying not to let the pain radiating from his chest overwhelm
him. His hand slid down when his
stomach growled, the teen baring his teeth in a wince. “Trust you to be wantin’ food at a time like
this,” he sighed, opening his eyes when Dark Magician Girl and Helmos burst out
laughing.
“I think you’re going to be just fine,” the Legendary
Knight said quietly, patting his arm lightly.
“I’ll go get you something to eat, and let the others know you’re
okay.”
~~oOo~~
Yugi collapsed to his knees, gasping, one hand clutching at
his chest as pain lanced through his small frame. “Joey,” he choked out, eyes closed, a myriad of jumbled images
flashing through his mind. He was
vaguely aware of the others closing in around him, lifting him up and gently
setting him on the couch. He gripped
the first hand that touched his, trying to steel himself against the emotions
and sensations coursing through him. He
saw flashes of Joey and Kaiba, looking as if they’d somehow been combined with
their dragons. He also saw Dark
Magician Girl, and the Legendary Knights.
Yugi groaned and clutched at his chest again as he saw himself flying
over Kaiba, and a bolt of white lightning sizzling through the air, heading
straight for him, then all of it faded to black. With a loud cry he sat up, flailing at the hands still reaching
for him, eyes wide, skin pale as he panted softly. “Oh my god…” he rasped, getting shakily to his feet, card still
held tightly in his grasp.
“Yugi, what did you see?” Duke demanded, grasping the
diminutive teen gently by the shoulders and giving him a light shake.
“I…I saw Joey,”
Yugi said quietly, looking up with tear-filled eyes. “He and Kaiba, something happened to them when they were
transported. It’s like they were fused
with their dragons, somehow.” He
quickly described what his vision had shown him, everyone else falling silent,
somewhat awed by the mental pictures Yugi’s words painted.
“You know, I would love to see something like that,”
Tristan said, trying to picture his best friend and Kaiba with wings and
tails. He grunted as Tea elbowed him in
the ribs, then tried to focus on what Yugi said when the smaller teen started
to speak again.
“They’ve got Dark Magician girl, and the Legendary Knights
watching over them, and each one has a dragon of their own with them, too. They…I think they were trying to learn how
to fly, and something went wrong. I
don’t know exactly what happened, but it looked like Joey was dive-bombing
Kaiba, and…Kaiba hit him with a white lightning attack.”
“What?!” Tea shrieked, staring wide-eyed at Yugi. “They were fighting?”
“I don’t think so,” Yugi said uncertainly. “I think it was all accidental. Or maybe Joey had learned to fly and was
playing a joke, and Kaiba didn’t take it too well,” he said softly, then rubbed
at his chest. “He was hurt by the
blast, but…” The teen closed his eyes a
moment, still feeling a connection to his best friend. “I think he’s going to be okay.”
Mokuba looked down at the card in his hand and sighed. “I guess I know now what Seto was worried
about. It felt like he was…angry with
himself over something. Yugi’s right,
whatever happened to Joey, if my brother did it, it was an accident. He must be feeling bad about hurting him
like that.”
Tristan made to speak, an angry expression on his face, but
Duke’s booted foot coming down on his instep halted whatever tirade the taller
teen had been about to release. With a
hiss of pain Tristan sat down heavily on the couch, crossing his legs and
cradling his now throbbing foot as he glared balefully up at the longhaired
teen.
“Normally, I couldn’t imagine your brother feeling bad
about anything, Mokuba. But if things
are as freaky over there in that other realm as they’re sounding, then both of
them are going through a lot, maybe it’ll end up changing them, for the
better,” Duke said, gaze moving around the room, meeting each person’s
eyes. Then he sighed, moving back over
to the window and looking down at the arena.
“Anyway, let’s just hope whatever misunderstanding occurred, they don’t
end up fighting again. I know we’d all
prefer to see them come back in one piece.”
There was a quiet murmur of agreement behind him, and Duke turned
around, glancing at Mokuba. “Want some
help getting that arena put back together?”
The raven-haired boy nodded, sliding the blank Blue Eyes
card back into Seto’s deck, then fastening his brother’s duel disk onto his
arm. “Yeah, let’s get started. The sooner we get the arena rebuilt, the
sooner we can get them home.”
To Be Continued…
I know, short, and not much
of our dragons, but I thought I’d give you a little something to tide you over,
and a taste of home to show things aren’t totally hopeless. Next chapter will focus on Seto/Joey while
the rest of the gang is busy trying to get them back. Expect it to be a lot longer, as time tends to pass differently
