Chapter Six
Seto and
Mokuba sit down in the limo so that it can take them to their schools.
Mokuba
pulls a handheld game out of his bag and starts to play.
Seto glares
out the window. His mind wanders away unconsciously.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Have you ever thought of
letting go, Seto?”
“Letting
go of what, Katsuya?”
“Everything.”
Jou looks towards Kaiba. His normally bright brown eyes seem dim, even in the
bright sunlight reflecting off them.
“I still
don’t understand,” says Kaiba staring into those impassive eyes.
“I’ve
thought about it… long and hard, I’ve thought about it,” says Jou, “but there
was always one thing I couldn’t let go of.”
“What’s
that?” asks Kaiba.
“Zuka…
my little sister, Shizuka,” says Jou with a sigh.
“Yes…
you never could let go of her, just like I could never let go of Mokuba,” says
Kaiba with a slight smile.
“Wrong…
I can let go of her now too… I’m weighing her down; I know it. I’m useless to
her. I’m nothing. She doesn’t need someone like me messing up her life.”
“What
are you saying? She loves you! You are her whole world!” exclaims Kaiba
forcefully.
“I know…
That’s why I must let her go. She needs to move on!” exclaims Jou. He steps
towards the balcony and leans on the railing. “Have you ever thought of letting
go, Seto?”
“I can’t
let go… I want to so badly, but I can’t let go! If I let go of one thing,
everything will crumble! I have to hang on because of Mokuba!” exclaims Kaiba
moving to the side of the balcony and leaning on the railing beside Jou.
“I don’t
have to hang onto anything anymore,” says Jou, “And I refuse to any longer.
This is it, Seto. Don’t hang onto your pain. If you can’t let anything else go…
let go of your pain. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m letting go of my pain.
I’m letting go.”
Kaiba
scrunches his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”
In a
fluid movement quite unlike himself, Jou hurls himself over the balcony’s
railing and starts to fall towards the ground five stories beneath him.
“No!”
screams Kaiba reaching out and grabbing Jou’s pants leg. “You can’t kill
yourself, Jou! It’s not right! I can’t let you do it! That would be murder!”
Jou
smiles. “Let go, Seto. It’s not murder if I jumped.”
Seto snaps
back to reality as the limo pulls up to the curb outside of the school. His
entire body shakes as he runs the dream through his mind again. He wonders if
he was awake or if he had somehow managed to fall asleep again. He glances
around to see that Mokuba is no longer in front of him. He climbs out of the
limo. He hurries to the classroom again and sits down to immediately start
writing the dream down. He hears the bell ring and he looks around for Katsuya,
but he doesn’t see the blond sitting down at his usual desk.
The
teacher, Sensei, starts to ramble on with the day’s lecture.
Seto stares
at Katsuya as the blond runs into the classroom five minutes late and sporting
a deep purple bruise on the side of his face.
“Mr.
Jonouchi, I would appreciate it if you could arrive to class on time,” says the
teacher.
“Yes,
Sensei,” says Katsuya.
“Now… are
you alright? Do you need to see the nurse? It looks like you’ve gotten into a
terrible fight!” exclaims Sensei.
“That’s
actually why I was late,” says Katsuya running his right hand through his
tousled blond locks.
Seto
narrows his eyes when he sees the bandages wrapped firmly around Katsuya’s
wrist to support it from being strained any further.
“I stopped
by to visit the nurse before I came to class,” says Katsuya.
Sensei nods
in acceptance as Katsuya heads to his seat.
Yugi
quickly passes a note to Katsuya.
Katsuya
slips the note under his desk until after Sensei has turned his back to the
class while writing notes on the board and explaining them in a loud, concise
voice. He unfolds the note and reads it to himself. He whimpers quietly in pain
as he lifts his pencil and scribbles a quick response. He folds the paper again
and tosses it towards Yugi.
Seto
watches Yugi frown at the response, and he suddenly wishes that he could see
that note.
Katsuya
reaches into his bag and pulls out the glasses he got the evening before from
Seto, and he puts them on.
Seto blinks
when he sees the condition of the glasses.
One of the
earpieces is taped together because it had obviously been snapped in two.
Katsuya
begins to slowly make notes on a sheet of paper, and he bites his bottom lip to
hide the pain he feels in his wrist. He nearly cheers with joy when the bell
finally rings to signify the first break. He drops his pencil onto his desk and
stands up quickly.
Seto
follows Katsuya and Yugi out of the classroom and into the courtyard. “Hey,
mutt!”
Katsuya
spins around and growls at Seto. “What the hell do you want, moneybags?”
Seto
reaches up and pulls the glasses from Katsuya’s face. He looks at them and
notices that one of the lenses is chipped. He glares at the blond. “Is this any
way to thank me for giving you a present?”
“Kaiba gave
you the glasses?” asks Yugi with wider than normal eyes.
“Yeah.”
Katsuya nods. “He felt sorry for me because my dad’s too cheap to get them for
me.”
“So what
happened to these?” asks Seto twirling the glasses in his fingers.
“Same as
last time. I fell down the stairs,” says Katsuya, “When my dad hit me.”
“When are
you going to leave?” whispers Yugi, “You know that Grandpa and I will take you
in.”
“I can’t
impose on you like that,” says Katsuya, “The Game Shop’s going well, but it
isn’t making enough business for your Grandpa to be supporting another person.
Especially one who eats as much as I do! Besides… I can normally fight him off.
All I got to do is get the first shot in and I can knock him out easily. It’s
when he surprises me that I get hurt.”
“Jou, you
can’t stay with him. He’s going to really hurt you someday,” says Yugi, “He
might even…”
“Sh…”
Katsuya’s eyes widen as he sees Hiroto, Anzu, and Ryou walking over to them
smiling.
“Hey, Jou,
Yugi! What are you doing hanging out with Kaiba?” asks Hiroto throwing his arm
over Katsuya’s shoulder.
“We were
talking to him,” says Katsuya shrugging Hiroto’s arm off, “He was… actually he
was bitching about my broken glasses!”
“Humph!”
Seto pushes the glasses into Katsuya’s hand. He storms away after saying,
“We’ll talk about this later, stupid mutt!”
“You mean
you’ll yell more!” Katsuya calls after him glaring at Seto’s back.
“What did
he really want, Jou?” asks Ryou, “He’s been staring at you all day throughout
classes!”
“I wish I
knew!” exclaims Katsuya with a sigh. He looks towards Seto and sees the brunet
once again looking towards him.
“Yugi, was
Kaiba trying to hit on Jou?” asks Anzu raising her eyebrow, “It would be just
like him to be gay!”
Yugi
giggles. “No! It was all very innocent! Nothing sexual!”
“Besides!
There’s nothing wrong with being gay, Anzu!” exclaims Katsuya turning his glare
on her.
“Oh, I
didn’t mean it that way, Jou! I just meant… that with his anti-social behavior,
it would make sense that he would be interested in guys. He’s never been on a
date with a girl,” says Anzu quickly trying to explain herself.
“He doesn’t
have time to date,” says Katsuya, “He is the President of Kaiba Corp, you
know!”
“I’m not
going to be able to explain my way out of this, am I?” asks Anzu biting her
lower lip.
Katsuya
shakes his head.
“Oh, Jou!
You know I have no problems with you liking guys!” exclaims Anzu honestly.
“Yeah!
We’re all cool with it!” exclaims Hiroto. “It’s fine that you want to take it
up the ass!”
Ryou slaps
Hiroto on the back of the head. “We’re your friends! We accept your preference
because we care about you! And we certainly won’t let anyone taunt you about
it!”
Hiroto
smiles. “That’s right! I’m the only person allowed to call you a fag!”
“Jeez,
thanks, Honda! You really know how to make me feel better!” Katsuya sighs and
shakes his head.
Seto stands
off to the side of the courtyard just within hearing range and watches the
group of friends. He thinks back to the first dream he had, where the group was
having a fairly similar conversation only regarding different members of their
group. He smirks as he thinks about Katsuya being attracted to men. Then his
mind rapidly returns to the dream he had in the limo this morning. He whispers
his thoughts out loud to himself, “I had the dream where Jou was trying to kill
himself. And his father hurt him. When? Last night? This morning? Could he have
been fighting his father while I was having the dream? Could the dream have
been a warning? If I had headed to his house right after I woke, could I have
stopped him from being hurt?”
Seto snaps
out of his reverie when he hears the bell ring signaling the end of break. He
heads back inside following the four friends.
* * *
Seto waits
for Katsuya after school. He smirks as the blond walks towards him with his
group of friends. “Going for a walk without your master, mutt?”
“Fuck you,
Kaiba!” exclaims Katsuya growling.
“In your
dreams!” snaps Seto.
Katsuya’s
eyes widen. He reaches for Seto’s shirt collar, but the brunet grabs his hand,
trying not to press too hard against the bandages.
“Mokuba
insisted I bring you over to play again! Get in the limo, stupid dog!” exclaims
Seto opening the door of the limo for Katsuya.
“Fine! I
happen to like the kid! See you guys at the game shop later!” exclaims Katsuya
climbing into the limo.
Seto climbs
in and closes the door.
The limo
begins to drive away.
“Who all
knows about your father?” asks Seto.
“Just Yugi.
The little guy is too smart. He figured it out on his own and confronted me
about it,” says Katsuya not noticing where they’re going, “Honda doesn’t know
about it. He is completely hopeless, and Anzu would be too freaked out if I
told her. She’d start in on some speech about why I never mentioned it earlier
so that they could… I don’t know, call the cops and get me dumped in a foster
home or something! Ryou… He might suspect something, but we both keep our
secrets hidden. He doesn’t pry into mine, and I don’t pry into his!”
“Why don’t
you leave?” asks Seto.
“Where
would I go? My mom won’t take me in! My own mother won’t even take me in!”
exclaims Katsuya angrily, “And I refuse to go to Yugi and his Grandpa! They’re
both great! And I know they would accept me into their family, no questions
asked… but the game shop… it’s doing well. It’s making money.”
“But like
you said, he won’t be able to afford to feed your bottomless pit of a stomach!”
exclaims Seto as the limo pulls to a stop, “Well… we’re here, come on!”
Seto and
Katsuya climb out of the limo.
Katsuya
looks around at the optical shop where they stand. “Um… what are we doing
here?”
“We’re getting
your glasses fixed!” exclaims Seto rolling his eyes as if it should have been
obvious. He grabs Katsuya’s elbow and drags him inside.
After a
brief twenty minutes, Seto passes a pair of glasses to Katsuya. “These are for
home. Try not to break them! The lenses are shatter resistant, and it’s a
titanium frame. It’s about as durable as you can get, but I don’t want you
testing that theory!”
Katsuya
nods. “Okay… I won’t! I only end up hurt when he surprises me, you know.
Normally, I can get in the first blow, and I can knock him unconscious so he
can’t hurt me!”
“At least
you’re able to fight back,” says Seto passing a second set of glasses to
Katsuya, “These are for school. Leave them in your locker at the end of the
day! And I expect your grades to improve now that you will actually be able to
see and take notes!”
“Yes, sir!”
exclaims Katsuya with a mock salute, “Thank you, Kaiba. You didn’t have to do
all this for me!”
Seto sighs.
He smirks at Katsuya. “Don’t worry! You’ll be paying me back!”
Katsuya’s
eyes widen and he swallows hard. “How?”
“You will
be helping me to find the hidden meanings within the dreams Mokuba’s been
having!” exclaims Seto, “I can’t help him with his problem if I don’t know what
it is!”
Katsuya
sighs in relief. “Oh, sure! I’d love to help!”
Seto nods
as he leads Katsuya back to the limo. “I’ll take you home now.”
“Actually,
I’m supposed to meet the guys at the game shop. Could you drop me there?” asks
Katsuya.
“I’ll
inform my driver. He can drop me off at the office then take you to the game
shop,” says Seto. He pushes an intercom button. “Kaiba Corp.”
The limo
begins to move.
“So… when
do I start?” asks Katsuya.
“I’ll give
you the descriptions of his dreams tomorrow,” says Seto.
“Okay,”
says Katsuya.
“I heard
you talking with your friends today,” says Seto, “I didn’t know you were gay.”
Katsuya
blushes.
“How long
have you known?”
“I’ve
always liked guys, so I thought I was bisexual,” explains Katsuya still
blushing, “After Battle City Tournament, I knew I was gay. I liked Mai before,
but… I realized that I didn’t want to be with her. I don’t want to be in
control all the time. Sometimes I would rather be taken.” He gasps and turns
even darker red, the color painting his entire face and his neck. “I can’t
believe I’m telling you this!”
“Don’t
worry, mutt! I won’t tell anyone about your obsession with being uke!” exclaims
Seto smirking.
“I haven’t
even told the guys that!” exclaims Katsuya.
“Don’t
worry, mutt!”
“I’m not a
dog!” shouts Katsuya.
The limo
stops.
Seto rolls
down the window separating them from his driver. “Take, Mr. Jonouchi to the
Kame Game Shop!”
“Yes, sir,
Mr. Kaiba!” exclaims the driver.
Seto climbs
out of the limo and heads into his office building. He sits down at his desk
and begins to work. He types up the dreams that he had written down in his
notebook, and he gets the file from his laptop containing the previous dreams.
He merges the two files together and prints them up, leaving room at the bottom
of each dream for Katsuya to make notes about possible meanings. He stretches
and tucks the papers into his briefcase. He closes his eyes for a minute that
quickly turns into twenty as he falls into dreamland.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jou and Kaiba sit across
from each other on the plush sofa of the Kaiba’s living room. They both wear
matching smirks.
“What are
you doing here?”
“I don’t
know,” says Jou with a shrug, but he maintains his ‘I’m-better-than-you-are’
expression.
“Go
away!” exclaims Kaiba angrily, “Quit bothering me! I don’t want to have these
dreams anymore! I don’t want any of this!”
“Actually,
I think you do… You see, I can’t control these dreams! You’re the one having
them,” says Jou, “So obviously, you are the one pulling me into your
dreams. I have no control over what happens here. You are putting me in these
dreams, and I’m just forced to play out the role you give me! If you really
want me out of your dreams, then start by finding out why you’re bringing me
here! Then you can try to get me out!”
