Chapter 5 ~ The Reawakening
Haru had walked home from school that afternoon. He knew that his father, Naraku, was going to be upset with him, to say the least. He was supposed to bring Yanna and the bracelet home with him. Haru never saw Yanna again that day after she left him on the school’s roof.
He finally reached the large house that he and his father were currently living in. The outside of the house was jet black with blood red trim. It was the perfect colors to match Naraku’s heart. There were windows all over the front of the house.
When he reached the house, Haru hesitated on opening the door. He really didn’t want to feel his father’s wrath for not getting the bracelet. ‘Well, I had better get this over with.’ Haru sighed as he thought to himself as he reached for the door once more. He finally grasped the doorknob and opened the door.
Once the door was opened, Haru stepped through it and then closed it behind him. He was, in a way, glad that his father wasn’t home at the time. Haru set his book bag beside the door as he walked off towards the kitchen. When he reached the kitchen, Haru saw his stepmother sitting at the kitchen table, crying. It always did break his heart to see his stepmother crying all the time. Every time he saw her crying, he knew why. He knew it was because she missed Yanna. He walked over to her to see if he could console her.
“Why are you crying, Izayoi?” Haru asked worriedly even though he knew why she was crying.
Izayoi looked up at her stepson with tears falling down her face. Her eyes were red and puffy. She knew that it showed on her face that she was worried about her daughter. It had been six months since she had last seen Yanna. All she could remember was seeing Yanna laying on the floor unconscious from Naraku’s beating.
“It’s nothing, Haru. I was just remembering a few things. I was just thinking about. . .” Izayoi started to say before she was so rudely interrupted.
Before Izayoi could tell Haru who she was thinking about, Naraku walked into the room. Izayoi looked up at her husband with tears and fear in her eyes. They had moved to Domino shortly after Naraku beat Yanna the last time.
Naraku looked at his wife sitting at the kitchen table. He knew who Izayoi was crying about. It annoyed Naraku to no end that she had been crying about Yanna for six months now.
“Izayoi, please leave the kitchen. I need to talk to Haru alone,” Naraku said while he glared at his son.
Izayoi nodded as she got up from the kitchen table. She slowly made her way out of the kitchen, She smiled sadly at Haru as she walked past him. She slowly made her way into the living room so that Naraku could talk to Haru.
Once Izayoi was out of the kitchen, Haru took her place at the kitchen table. Naraku remained standing as he continued to glare at Haru. Naraku knew that Haru didn’t get the bracelet.
“So, why didn’t you get the bracelet from her?” Naraku asked, still glaring.
Haru turned his gaze away from his father’s eyes. He knew that he couldn’t tell his father that the bracelet and Yanna was within his reach. Haru slowly looked his father in the eyes once again.
“I am sorry, Father, but Yanna was surrounded by her brother, InuYasha, and his friends,” Haru said apologetically to his father.
Naraku continued to glare at Haru. He knew that his son was lying to him. He didn’t know why Haru would lie to him about not being able to get the bracelet from Yanna at school.
“So, InuTaishou has regained custody of Yanna. I wonder if he knows what happened to her,” Naraku said to no one in particular.
“I guess so. I know I saw InuYasha with her,” Haru replied to his father. “But I don’t think that she has told InuTaishou that you were the one who almost beat her to death.”
Naraku’s glare turned into a smile. He knew that Yanna wouldn’t say anything about her beatings to anyone. ‘I have beat her well,’ he thought to himself. Naraku felt his smile start to turn into a sadistic smirk.
Haru just stared at his father with a look of disgust on his face. He couldn’t believe how his father was acting. Just then, Haru got up from the kitchen table. He looked his father straight in the eyes.
“I don’t see why you are making such a big fuss over it. It’s just a stupid bracelet,” Haru seethed at his father.
Naraku just stared at his son. “That bracelet holds a great deal of power and Yanna is the key to unlocking it,” he said angrily.
Haru didn’t say much as he stormed out of the kitchen. He couldn’t believe how his father was acting over a stupid bracelet. He then walked over to the door and picked up his book bag. Once he had his book bag on his hands, Haru then proceeded to go to his room.
Izayoi sat on a couch in the living room while she listened to Naraku and Haru as they talked about Yanna. She couldn’t believe her ears when she heard Naraku mention InuTaishou’s name. At least Izayoi knew that Yanna was still alive and doing okay.
Naraku couldn’t believe that Haru would say something like that to him. He has been after that bracelet for a while now. He made sure that Haru knew all about the bracelet while he was growing up. Naraku soon left the kitchen and headed for his study.
**Meanwhile**
When Ryou saw Bakura and Yanna unconscious on the bed, he immediately ran to them. He climbed on the bed and tried to push Yanna off of Bakura. Ryou didn’t make much progress with getting Yanna off of his yami.
Marik saw the trouble that Ryou was having to move Yanna. He slowly walked over to the bed to help Ryou when he saw Bakura’s arms tighten around Yanna. That was when Marik picked Ryou up and handed him to Yami.
“Here, Yami. Take Ryou and the other two out of here. I will check on Bakura and dress his wounds. Make sure you shut the door on your way out,” Marik said as he looked Yami straight in the eyes.
Yami nodded his head as he took Ryou from Marik. He then proceeded to take the younger boys out of the room. Of course, Yami had some difficulty with Ryou.
“I AM NOT LEAVING UNTIL I KNOW THAT BAKURA IS OKAY!!!” Ryou yelled once again at the top of his lungs.
Marik flinched at the sound of Ryou’s voice. He knew the young hikari was worried about his yami. Marik bowed his head as he slowly turned around to face Ryou.
“Don’t worry, Ryou. Bakura is going to be okay. He’s been through worse than this before,” Marik said reassuredly.
Malik and Yugi had already left the room when Yami had motioned them out of the room a few minutes earlier. They headed back downstairs to the living room.
Ryou just looked at Marik with a stunned look on his face. He knew that Marik was right. He nodded to Marik and then turned to leave the room. Yami soon followed Ryou out of the room and shut the door behind him.
Once Ryou and the others were out of the room, Marik turned back to Bakura and Yanna. He tried to move Yanna off of Bakura but he was met with a deep growl coming from Bakura.
~*Bakura, I know you can hear me. Please let Yanna go so that I can take care of your shoulder. I am going to lay her beside you.*~ Marik said to his old friend.
Bakura soon calmed down and released Yanna so that Marik could look at his shoulder. He felt Marik lift Yanna off his chest. He whimpered at the loss of Yanna on his chest. He felt Marik lay Yanna beside him on his right side. Bakura brought his right arm around Yanna subconsciously and protectively.
Now that Yanna was off of Bakura’s chest, Marik lifted up his friend’s shirt. Marik gasped at what he saw. He couldn’t believe that Yanna had bitten completely through the muscle all the way down to the bone. Just then, Marik got off of the bed and rushed over to Bakura’s dresser and pulled out the bottle of peroxide and some bandages. He then rushed back over to Bakura and Yanna on the bed.
Once he reached the bed, Marik noticed that Yanna and Bakura were convulsing. Marik tried to stop them both from convulsing but he was pushed back by an unseen force. Marik landed up against Bakura’s dresser. He rubbed the back of his head as he stood up and watched the two on the bed. Yanna and Bakura both stopped convulsing just as quick as they started.
When Marik was able to get on the bed once again, he immediately started to take care of their wounds. He couldn’t believe how deep the bite mark went on Bakura’s shoulder. He continued to clean Bakura’s shoulder until all the blood was gone. Marik then put a dressing on the bite wound.
Once Marik had finished with Bakura’s shoulder, he turned to Yanna’s wrist, which was still enclosed tightly in Bakura’s hand. Marik tried to remove Bakura’s hand but it wouldn’t budge. It was as if something would be released from Yanna’s bracelet if Bakura were to let go. Again, Marik spoke to Bakura in ancient Egyptian.
~*Let go of her wrist, Bakura. Your hand and her wrist are severely burned.*~ Marik said with a stern tone in his voice.
Bakura was reluctant to let go at first. He finally let go of Yanna’s wrist so that Marik could take a closer look at his friend’s hand. Marik shook his head as he started to look both Yanna’s wrist and Bakura’s hand.
Marik looked at Bakura’s hand first. He couldn’t believe what he saw. He noticed that Bakura’s hand wasn’t burnt as bad as he first thought. Marik still cleaned the small wound on his friend’s hand. When Marik had finished cleaning Bakura’s hand, he wrapped some gauze around it.
Once Marik was done with Bakura’s injuries, he turned his attention to Yanna’s wrist. He nearly fell off the bed when he saw the condition of her wrist. It looked like her bracelet had fused with the skin of her wrist. Marik started to pull the bracelet away from her wrist. He continued to pull the bracelet away until he heard Yanna yelp at the pain.
~*It’s okay, Yanna. I’m sorry for hurting you.*~ Marik said to her in a calming voice.
Yanna calmed down at the sound of Marik’s voice. Marik was pleased that he could get Yanna to calm down. Now that he had her calmed down enough, Marik went back to treating Yanna’s wrist. He carefully removed the bracelet from her wrist so that he could clean and bandage it. Marik winced every time he touched her wrist with the washcloth. He made sure that he was careful in cleaning her wrist. When Marik finished cleaning her wrist, he wrapped it up and put the bracelet back on her wrist.
When Marik had finished with both Yanna and Bakura’s wounds, he got off the bed and looked at the two of them while they slept. He smiled to himself as he turned and walked out of the room to head back downstairs to where the others were waiting for him.
**Meanwhile Downstairs**
Yami, Ryou, Malik, and Yugi walked into the living room after leaving Bakura’s room. Ryou was still upset for leaving Bakura’s room. So, he went over and sat on the couch, ignoring the others. Malik walked over to the chair, he was sitting in earlier, and sat down. Yami sat in the other chair with Yugi on his lap. They all sat in silence. No one dared to speak. Just then, Ryou spoke up.
“Yami, what did Marik mean when he said that Bakura’s been through worse than this?” Ryou asked without looking at Yami.
Yami was shocked by Ryou’s question. He didn’t know how to answer Ryou’s question. He looked over at Ryou and answered the boy’s question as best as he could.
“It’s a long story, Ryou. One that should be left up to him to tell you,” Yami said reassured.
Ryou finally looked up at Yami. He could tell that there was something more to all of this. He needed and wanted to find out what was being kept from him.
“Ryou, let’s not worry about that right now. Let’s just concentrate on Yanna and Bakura’s wellbeing,” Yugi said to his friend on the couch.
“Yeah, Ryou, Yugi’s right. We have to make sure Bakura and Yanna are going to be okay,” Malik added.
Ryou looked at his friends. He knew that they were right. Ryou also knew that he would have been the first one to know if anything serious had happened to Bakura. On the other hand, Ryou was just as worried about Yanna and he knew the others were as well. Just then, Marik walked into the living room.
Marik walked into the living room and went over to the couch and sat down next to Ryou. He just looked at the floor. Malik got up out of the chair and walked over to Marik.
“How is Bakura and Yanna doing, Marik?” Malik asked his dark half.
Marik looked up into his hikari’s eyes. He could see the worry written on the young boy’s face.
“They are both sleeping peacefully. I have cleaned and dressed their wounds. The rest is up to them,” Marik finally replied.
“See Ryou. I told you they would be okay,” Yugi said, looking over at Ryou.
Ryou just nodded at Yugi. He just wished that Yami and Marik would tell him what was going on between Yanna and Bakura. Just then, Ryou curled up on the couch so that he could think better. He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on Bakura’s link with him.
/Bakura…?/ Ryou asked mentally.
//. . .//
/Please Bakura. I know you can hear me./
//. . .//
Ryou was starting to get upset that Bakura wasn’t answering him. He slowly drifted off to sleep still trying to talk to Bakura.
Marik looked over to ask Ryou something and noticed that Ryou was sound asleep next to him. The others noticed at the same time as Marik that Ryou was asleep. Just then, Marik got off the couch so that Ryou could be more comfortable. That was when Yugi went and got a blanket out of the hall closet. Yugi came back with the blanket and handed it to Marik. Marik then took the blanket and covered Ryou with it. Then he turned and looked at the others.
“Let’s go into the kitchen and talk so that Ryou can sleep,” Marik said.
The others agreed with Marik. They all walked into the kitchen. Once they were all in the kitchen, Yugi and Malik sat at the kitchen table while Marik and Yami were leaning up against the kitchen counters. Everyone was quiet for what seemed like hours.
**Back upstairs in Bakura’s room**
Bakura pulled Yanna closer to his body in a protective manner. He then wrapped his right arm back around her. He smiled in his sleep when he felt Yanna curl up beside him. Bakura soon fell into a deeper sleep as he opened his end of the mind link with Ryou.
//Ryou. . .//
/Bakura. . ./ Ryou shouted excitedly through their link.
Bakura winced mentally at the loudness of Ryou’s voice.
//Not so loud, Ryou.//
/I’m sorry, Bakura./ Ryou said quietly. /How are you?/
//I’m fine, Ryou, just a little tired.//
/I know, Bakura. How is Yanna?/
//She’s fine, Ryou. Now get some sleep.//
/Okay./
With that said, Bakura cut off his end of their mind link as he slipped into a deeper sleep. He held Yanna even closer to him. He winced slightly as he wrapped his left arm around her.
While Yanna and Bakura slept, the bracelet, on Yanna’s left wrist, started to glow an eerie color. It was as if the bracelet was coming to life. The glow started to engulf the whole room.
Just then, the power of the bracelet started to drain Yanna’s and Bakura’s strength. Since their strength was being drained by the bracelet, neither of them could wake up. And they weren’t the only ones in the house that were feeling the drain caused by the bracelet.
**Back Downstairs**
The silence continued in the kitchen. The four boys just looked at each other. Just then, Malik looked over at his dark half and spoke.
“Marik, why did Yanna attack Bakura like she did?” Malik asked.
Marik didn’t look at Malik. He once again looked at the floor. He really didn’t know what to say as an answer to Malik’s question. Marik finally looked up at Malik and smiled weakly.
“I really don’t know why she attacked Bakura, Malik,” Marik said as he lied to his hikari.
Yami looked over at Marik. He knew that Marik was lying to protect the younger boys. He also knew that they would find out sooner or later what Yanna really was. Both him and Marik along with Bakura knew what Yanna was and why she had attacked Bakura the way she did.
Just then, both Yami and Marik were brought to their knees by an unseen force. Both of the older boys wrapped their arms around their upper bodies as the pain from the unseen force hit them in waves.
Malik and Yugi watched in horror as Marik and Yami fell to the floor in pain. They both immediately got out of their chairs and ran to their respective dark halves.
Malik reached Marik quite quickly. He too fell to his knees next to his yami. He could see the pain etched on his yami’s face. This brought tears to Malik’s eyes. Before Malik could say anything, Marik passed out on the kitchen floor. Malik then pulled his yami’s unconscious form into his lap.
/Marik. . ./ Malik screamed at his yami mentally.
//. . .//
Meanwhile, Yugi made it over to Yami at the same time as Malik reached Marik. Yugi could see the same pain on Yami’s face that Malik saw on Marik’s. Yugi also started crying when he saw the pain that Yami was in. Yami also passed out before Yugi could say anything.
/Yami. . ./
//. . .//
Yugi and Malik looked at each other worriedly. They didn’t quite understand what was going on. They were frozen to their spots. They both held their dark halves and cried.
**Inside the bracelet**
Yanna opened her eyes but all she saw was darkness. She sat up and blinked a few times until her eyes had fully adjusted to the darkness. Once she was able to see clearly, Yanna noticed that she wasn’t in Bakura’s room, so to speak, any longer.
Yanna looked around the room that she was in. She noticed that the bed she was on was a mahogany four-poster bed. Directly across from the foot of the bed, Yanna saw a huge window with two chairs sitting on either side of it.
Yanna continued to look around the room. To her left, she saw a full-length mirror next to a set of oak double doors. Next to the doors, in a corner, was a mahogany desk with a matching chair. She also noticed the mahogany nightstands on either side of the bed. To her right was another huge window. Both windows had purple silk curtains that went all the way to the floor. Next to the window, by the bed, was a mahogany dresser. There were pictures of previous pharaohs on the walls.
After Yanna had finished looking around the room, she tried to get off the bed. She stopped moving when she heard a soft growl coming from behind her. Yanna turned around and noticed that Bakura was holding her in his sleep. Just then, Yanna heard someone speaking to her.
“Don’t worry, they will not wake up,” the voice said.
Yanna soon became frightened. She looked all around the room to see if she could find out who the voice belonged to.
“Who are you?” Yanna asked into the empty room.
Just as Yanna asked that question, a girl about Yanna’s age emerged from the shadows. The girl looked exactly like Yanna. For Yanna, it was like looking into a mirror.
“I am sorry. My name is Anise,” the girl said as she approached the bed.
When Anise reached the bed, she sat down next to Yanna. Anise looked down at Bakura, who was still holding Yanna. She then looked at the foot of the bed and saw Yami and Marik laying there. Yanna saw the other two for the very first time since she had awakened.
“Where am I?” Yanna asked while looking at Anise.
“You are inside the Millennium Bracelet that these three had created for me,” Anise said pointing at the three boys on the bed.
Anise then looked Yanna directly in the eyes. She could tell that Yanna was keeping a secret from everyone.
“I can see why Bakura is so fond of you, Yanna. You remind him of me in so many ways. Tell the boys your secret, Yanna, and they will protect you from whoever is hunting you,” Anise said. “Now, go back to sleep. You will be waking up soon.”
Yanna nodded and laid back down. She soon closed her eyes. She once again let sleep claim her tired body. Once Yanna was asleep, Anise leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“And I will always protect you, Yanna,” Anise said just as she faded back into the shadows.
“Protect her Bakan,” Anise whispered from the shadows.
**Outside of the bracelet**
Yanna started stirring on the bed. She slowly opened her amber-gold eyes. She looked over at Bakura and smiled. She soon felt Bakura’s arms tighten around her.
Bakura slowly opened his violet eyes and looked at Yanna. He too smiled as he looked into her shining golden eyes.
“I’m glad to see you’re back to normal,” Bakura said as he held her closer to him.
Yanna nodded but then looked away from him. She remembered what Anise had told her.
~~Begin Flashback~~
“I can see why Bakura is so fond of you, Yanna. You remind him of me in so many ways. Tell the boys your secret, Yanna, and they will protect you from whoever is hunting you,” Anise said.
~~End Flashback~~
“Bakura, there is something I need to tell you, Marik, and Yami,” Yanna said close to tears.
**Meanwhile in the kitchen**
Yami and Marik started to stir in their hikaris’ arms. Marik was the first one to open his eyes and look around the kitchen. Yami soon followed by opening his eyes. They both looked at their hikaris with a look of confusion on their faces.
“What just happened here?” Marik finally asked.
Malik and Yugi just looked at each other. They were just as confused as their yamis were about what had just happened. That was when Yugi spoke up and answered Marik’s question.
“We don’t know what happened either. You and Yami just collapsed and passed out on the kitchen floor,” Yugi said, looking at his own yami.
Marik and Yami looked at each other. They both got to their feet unsteadily. They both walked over to the kitchen table with the help of their hikaris. Once they reached the table, each boy sat down in one of the chairs around the table.
“I wonder if this has something to do with Yanna’s bracelet,” Marik said to no one in particular.
“I don’t know, Marik. But maybe we should go check on them,” Yami said back.
Marik nodded as he stood up. He swayed just a little but quickly steadied himself. He smiled down at Malik as if to reassure the young boy that everything was going to be okay.
Yami stood up as well. He didn’t sway as much as Marik did but he did sway. He smiled down at Yugi too.
Marik looked at the younger boys. He knew that they meant well but him and Yami needed to check on Yanna and Bakura alone in case Yanna didn’t return to normal.
“I want you two to stay downstairs while Yami and I go upstairs and check on Yanna and Bakura. Also make sure that Ryou stays down here too when he wakes up,” Marik said while looking at Malik and Yugi. The two hikaris nodded their understanding as they watched Yami and Marik walk out of the kitchen.
Yami and Marik walked out of the kitchen and headed for the stairs. When they reached the stairs, they started their climb up to Bakura’s room. Once they reached the top of the stairs, they walked down the short hallway to Bakura’s room. Yami and Marik stood outside of Bakura’s door and listened for any sign of life inside. They were surprised when they heard laughter coming from behind the closed door. Marik reached for the doorknob and opened the door. Both Marik and Yami were surprised to see Yanna and Bakura awake so soon.
**Meanwhile in Bakura’s room**
Bakura gently put his hand under Yanna’s chin and forced her to look at him. He saw the tears sliding down her face. He reached up and gently wiped her tears away with his thumb.
“Please don’t cry, Yanna. We’ll get through this together,” Bakura whispered soothingly in her ear.
Yanna was able to see the concern in his eyes. She knew right then and there that she would be able to tell him anything.
“Thank you, Bakura,” Yanna whispered back.
Yanna finally sat up and looked down at Bakura’s chest. Her eyes looked over at his left shoulder and sighed deeply.
Bakura noticed that her eyes had drifted to his left shoulder. He could tell that she felt bad for doing it.
“Don’t worry, Yanna. It isn’t the first time that I have been bitten by a dog demon,” Bakura said, looking up at her.
Yanna looked down at Bakura with a shocked look on her face.
“You know what I am?” Yanna asked flabbergasted.
Bakura just nodded.
“It happened five thousand years ago. Anise had turned into a full demon because someone had injured her. She lunged at me and bit me in the same spot as you did just before she died in my arms,” Bakura said, smiling at Yanna.
Yanna once again looked at Bakura with a shocked look on her face and in her eyes.
“You mean the girl I saw inside the bracelet,” Yanna said.
Bakura nodded once more.
“Yes, that would be Anise,” Bakura whispered.
Then Bakura gently grabbed Yanna’s left wrist and looked at the names engraved on the bracelet. He then read them out loud to her in ancient Egyptian.
~*Bakura, my love. Marik, my friend. Yami, my brother. Anise, the dog demon princess.*~
Yanna smiled down at him. She had known all along what the bracelet had said. Just then, Yanna started laughing. Bakura was confused at first but then joined in with her laughing. They were laughing so hard that they didn’t hear the bedroom door open.
