smint45: Really glad you liked the last new chapters. And I hope you enjoy this new one just as much.
Relmara: Wow! Another lengthy but very appreciated review. I thought of making that pencil a pen, but then I thought about how powerful a CEO’s handshake is. I can totally imagine Kaiba breaking a pen. Oh, and Seto’s going to be gracefully falling. Oh, and not applying cream to the marks on his back will come back to bite him in the ass. You’ll see in a later chapter. Yes, I felt like I throwing in a shocker of Seto cursing. Is it bad that I like to cackle like the evil genius you claim me to be? Because I am. JCHAPTER SIXDr. Sharon Connors finished typing a reply to an email before locking her computer. She stood up from her desk as she walked around the room gathering things for her trip. She grabbed up a miniature iPad that was disguised as a composition notebook from a charger and unplugged the charger. She placed them in her bag before moving on to grabbing up a few school supplies. She placed them in the bag, too, before closing it and swinging it over her shoulder. Sharon pulled a strand of long black hair behind her ear as she grabbed up her travel coffee mug with her other hand. She shook it lightly.“Empty,” she said, frowning.Since the drive to Kaiba Mansion would be a tad long, Sharon decided to stop by the teacher’s lounge to top off. She made sure to lock her office door and leave the sign up clipboard next to her door for students. The hallway was mostly empty right now as most students were out in the commons area, since the first bell had not rung yet. When Sharon finally reached the teacher’s lounge, she found a good number of staff in there. Some were looking over lessons while others were sitting around having breakfast or discussing problems in the classroom. As Sharon stepped over to the coffee pot and unscrewed her travel lid, she couldn’t help but overhear a few teachers.“Paul, you can’t be serious. Surely, this is just a ploy for skipping school,” a female teacher complained.Principal Paul Shu had been the principal of Domino High for over twenty years. He had a good record with his staff and the students, but especially with ‘problem’ students. Having once been a trouble student himself, Paul was able to relate to the kids.Sharon wondered which one of her students Annamarie was complaining about now. The woman was a broken record. She poured the coffee into her mug, but made sure to leave some still in it.“Ann, I assure you the word came straight from a medical doctor. I received the fax on my personal fax machine late Friday afternoon. I’m sorry you think that this is ploy, but for now, Joseph Wheeler is on medical leave from school. His doctor is hopeful that he’ll be back in a few weeks,” Paul told her.“Wake up, Paul. Wheeler is a thug and gets into fights all the time. He probably paid off the doctor. Besides, everyone knows the boy is a slacker. He’s the only student failing my class.”Sharon slid the coffee pot back into place a little harder than she meant to. The loud smack sound caused everyone’s heads to snap up as Sharon whipped around. She looked fit to kill as her laser-like gaze fell on her target.Annamarie Moshi was an older teacher in her mid-forties. In her early years, she had worked at lower-end schools with a lot of thug, “low life” students. She had it out for students like Joey and unfortunately, Joey had her first period for English.“Sharon? I didn’t see you there,” Annamarie said.“You shut your mouth!” Sharon snapped.Annamarie’s mouth dropped open. Sharon was defensive about her students, but never this defensive. Sharon saw that Paul wasn’t going to stop her and continued on.“You have no right to talk about any student that way, let alone Wheeler. I’m on my way now to see him and I can assure you he is in no shape to deal with the likes of you or a high school hallway. You have no right to pass judgment on an innocent student,” Sharon growled.“Pfft! Wheeler? Innocent? Yeah, right. Are we still talking about the same boy?” joked a male teacher.Sharon whirled around ready to take his head off, too. Except Paul beat her to the punch.“That’s enough,” he said, standing. All eyes fell on him. He crossed his arms over his chest with a stern look on his face.“That’s enough bashing on a student in my presence. From here on, anyone speaking ill of a student, will automatically undergo sensitivity training and be written up. Have I made myself clear?”The teachers stared shocked at him, but all nodded their heads. Paul turned and gave Sharon a small smile.“Tell Wheeler I wish him a speedy recovery.”“I will, sir.”/……/
Getting across town and gaining access to Kaiba Mansion had taken less time than she had thought. Sharon pulled up into the driveway and was greeted by a man she recognized as often escorting Seto Kaiba.
“Dr. Connors, welcome to Kaiba Mansion,” Roland said.“Thank you,” she replied, closing her car door and locking it.Roland had her follow him inside as he led her into the house.“I hope traffic was not too bad for you. Mr. Kaiba appreciates you coming out to see Mr. Wheeler,” Roland told her.Sharon was visibly surprised.“I was under the impression that Misters Kaiba and Wheeler weren’t on the best of terms. How is that Wheeler came to be here?” Sharon asked. At that, Roland chose not to give her a clear answer.“I’m afraid that extenuating circumstances with Mr. Wheeler’s case has brought him here on a temporary basis,” Roland answered.Roland led her to the downstairs study where Joey had met with the officers. They found Joey sitting in his wheelchair and looking out the window.“Mr. Wheeler.”Joey turned his wheelchair around when he heard Roland call his name. His face lit up when he saw his Guidance Counselor. Roland excused himself and left the two alone. He planned to go straight to the security office and turn off the cameras so Joey could have his privacy.Sharon smiled as Joey showed her to the seating. When he came close, she leant down and gave him a small hug around the shoulders.“It’s good to see you, Joey,” Sharon said.Joey smiled. “Good to see you, too, Dr. Sharon.”Sharon set her bag down and sat down in an armchair. The boy’s bruises and scratches were looking much better than what her husband had described. She knew this was because Joey was a fast healer.“How are your ribs?” Dr. Sharon asked.Joey scooted forward in the wheelchair and lifted part of his shirt up. A tight but comfortable pack of bandages were wrapped securely around his middle. He dropped his short with a smile.“I’m glad to see them wrapped. Did you have help?” Dr. Sharon asked.Joey turned his head to the side with a smile.“Kaiba helped me before he went to school,” Joey lied.Luckily, the male was a good liar. Dr. Sharon didn’t seem to suspect a thing as she reached into her bag to pull out the disguised mini iPad.“Seeing as it’s the end of October, you have less than two months of this semester’s classes. I checked your grades yesterday. Would you like to hear how you’re doing?”The high school junior smiled. Halfway through Joey’s freshmen year, Dr. Sharon had suspected Joey was smarter than he let on. When the freshmen class went on a field trip and Joey was forced to stay behind, Dr. Sharon had given him a series of tests, including an IQ test.It had revealed some surprising results. Joey was actually quite intelligent. In fact, he wasn’t too many IQ points off from Seto Kaiba. Unfortunately, all of the high school teachers had heard about Wheeler long before he arrived at the school. So he didn’t bother trying, since they made assumptions about him and their classes bored him.Not wanting the student to suffer, Dr. Sharon had worked with Joey to secretly enroll him in online classes. He did his homework in secret on paper at home. He did the online class work during study hall in Dr. Sharon’s office and detention after school. On Sundays, Joey snuck out to meet Dr. Sharon at a private room at the library to work on his work. His work online transferred over to his actual school work. Each grading period, grades were posted up on the bulletin. For the privacy of students, they were listed with a number. No one knew who anyone’s number was unless they shared it with their friends. Kaiba was always at the top of the list, but no one knew who 0210012 was; 0210012 had been number two in academics since the middle of the class’ freshmen year.“You have an A in AP Statistics, AP English Language and Composition, and Italian III. You have a B in History Honors and AP Chemistry. I was disappointed to find out your other elective course didn’t have its grade posted yet,” Dr. Sharon said, mock pouting at the end.Joey chuckled.“It’s cool, Dr. Sharon. My Early Childhood teach is probably grading them big projects we just turned in,” Joey chuckled. She handed him the iPad, which he responded to with a confused expression. She chuckled.“Since you won’t be going back to the man’s apartment, Jack and I wanted you to have this. You’ll be able to do all your work on it and you’ll be able to hide it in class. Teachers rarely call on you so you’ll be able to just do your work and everyone will think you’re doodling in your notebook,” Dr. Sharon explained.Joey suddenly burst out laughing. He bent over at the waist laughing and clutching his ribs. He thought it was a brilliant idea! Not even Kaiba would suspect a thing. After calming himself down, Joey shared a few more words with Dr. Sharon until she stood up to leave. She hadn’t even taken a step when her face scrunched up in thought.“You thinkin’ about finally leavin’ that husband of yers for me?” Joey joked with a grin. She shot him a playful glare.“No. I was just wondering if you’d like to get out of here and stretch your legs. We can go meet Jack for lunch,” Dr. Sharon offered.Joey’s whole face lit up. “I’d love to.”Dr. Sharon smiled. She suggested Joey go put his mini iPad away first before they go. Joey unlocked his wheels and twirled around to head for the door. He came to a sudden stop after only a few feet, causing the woman to jerk to a stop.Joey glanced up over his shoulder at her,“Before we leave, can you do me a favor, doc?” Joey asked.Sharon nodded.“Of course.”Joey pointed to a high level shelf on one of the bookcases.“Can you pull down that book for me?” he said, pointing.Sharon walked over to the book case and followed Joey’s directions to the book he wanted. She pulled it down and looked at the cover. She smiled as she crossed the room and held it out to him.“You’ve read this one already,” Sharon commented.Joey smiled as he put it down on his lap.“I have. Three times.” Chuckle. “Can’t help it. It’s a good read.”Sharon chuckled. That it was. She had read it before herself./……/
After Joey stowed the book and school supplies away in his room, he carefully climbed into Sharon’s car. Roland folded up the wheelchair and put it in the car trunk. They drove off the premises, but not before Joey told Roland when he would be back. Once off the property and away from the mansion, Sharon spoke.
“All right, Joey. I can tell you need to talk to me about something. What’s going on?”Joey sighed. Dr. Sharon could always tell when he needed to talk to her about something.“I think Kaiba found out the details about the abuse from when I was talking with the police. I know he has security cameras all over the place and I found a concealed one in the study. I think he may have watched it live or recorded and watched later,” Joey confessed.“As cliché as it sounds, how does that make you feel? That he might know the details you told the officers,” Sharon asked. She was pleased that Joey took his time to mull over the question. When she first met him, he had blurted out the first thing that came to mind. Now he took his time when answering.“I guess…I guess I’m kinda conflicted.”Sharon waited for him to elaborate.“I guess I’m happy. I mean, Kaiba’s got a better idea of the shit I’ve had to go through. At the same time, I’m kinda pissed. I mean, I know it’s his house and all, but he doesn’t have any rights to invade my privacy,” Joey explained. The Guidance Counselor could understand that.“And how does it feel to be in the same house as him?”“Oh, Kaiba’s still hot as Hell with an attitude to match it.”Sharon snickered. Over a year ago, when Joey had been ranting to her all about the “cold-hearted CEO bastard,” Joey had let it slip that the brunette would be sexier if his attitude didn’t suck. It had been quite hilarious to see the assortment of emotions that had flashed over Joey’s face after he realized what he had said. It had taken her forever to calm him down. The boy already knew and accepted he was gay; he just had trouble accepting what he had said about Kaiba.Dr. Sharon drove them down to near the hospital where a small café was. Dr. Jack was sitting outside at a small table. He stood to come help Joey out of the car. He encouraged the youth to walk the short distance to the table to help exercise his legs.Joey sunk down in his chair with a sigh. The waitress came by and took their drink orders. They spoke of many topics while Dr. Jack asked about Joey’s well-being.“Well, I did somehow get a new injury,” Joey said, out of the blue.Dr. Jack asked for an explanation. Joey explained that he had woken up with a bandaged foot. He had checked it later and found his foot cut up. When Joey had mentioned it to Roland earlier, the security man told him he had been doing a security check around the premises last night. He had checked on Joey and found he had cut his foot so he had bandaged it up for him.“Well, that was nice of him,” Dr. Sharon remarked./……/
It was later that afternoon, after Dr. Sharon had brought Joey home, that the Kaiba brothers returned. Seto kept glancing over his shoulder and out the door at the strange car parked in the driveway.
“You can kiss my ass, pal!”Seto frowned as he and Mokuba stepped inside. Joey’s voice came again another few seconds later.“Get the Hell away from me!”The two brothers shared a confused look. That had been Joey’s voice. He must have been talking to the person whose car was parked out front. However, why would Joey be yelling at them?It was then that Roland appeared. He patted Mokuba on the shoulder before stepping up to Seto’s side. He leaned in close to whisper in his ear so that Mokuba wouldn’t hear him. Mokuba watched his brother stiffen and a cross look come over his face. He was almost certain he heard his brother growl.“Thank you for informing me of our guest,” Seto told Roland.Roland nodded his head and walked away to return to his post.“Big brother, what’s wrong?” Mokuba asked.“Social Worker.”Mokuba made an “Ooh” face as his brother brushed past him. He almost felt bad for the Social Worker that was about to incur the wrath of his big brother. The Department of Children and Families (DCF) had been giving them a hard time since Seto had gained guardianship of his younger brother.Joey stiffened at the hand on his shoulder and jerked his head to the opposite side. A quick glance downwards told Seto that Joey was holding back his frustration. Frustration that looked suspiciously like salty tears. The Social Worker, a man with sleek black hair, pushed his glasses up as he turned gaze upwards to the newcomer. Seto smirked. The man looked nervous, which meant he probably realized whose lion’s den he had just stepped in.“I don’t think the Department would be pleased to hear one of its little ants is upsetting an injured minor,” Seto stated in his cocky, ‘I am holier than you’ voice. The Social Worker didn’t seem pleased about Seto’s comment.“This doesn’t concern you, Mr. Kaiba. I am here to escort Mr. Wheeler to his new foster home,” the man stated point blank.Joey shot the man such an acidic look that Seto was surprised he didn’t melt right on the spot. It seems the dog had been taking lessons from him in the art of glaring.“And I already told ya I ain’t going anywhere with you,” Joey snarled.“You don’t have a choice, Mr. Wheeler. The paperwork’s been signed and the placement has been set. Please don’t make me call law enforcement,” the Social Worker told him.Joey opened his mouth to comment, but a squeeze on his shoulder stopped him. Out of the corner of his eye, Joey glanced up at Seto. The man looked downright murderous.Gee, and I thought I was the only one able to piss him off that badly, Joey thought.“I doubt that Wheeler’s doctor would appreciate him being moved to an improper placement with people who do not know him or anything about his injuries. You’ll also find that no one from the police department would dare set foot on my property unless they were here to question Wheeler about his abuser,” Seto smirked.Joey barely concealed a shiver. It felt weird hearing someone use the word ‘abuser’ to describe his father. It felt even weirder to hear Kaiba defending him.Joey didn’t bother hiding his smile as the Social Worker stammered and puffed up.“The home is perfectly suitable for a child like Mr. Wheeler! It’s wheelchair accessible and the foster parents have fostered over thirty children in all their years. Now come along, Mr. Wheeler.”It was then that the Social Worker made the biggest mistake of his life. He surged forward to grab Joey’s arm at the wrist. His injured wrist. Joey gasped at the sudden zing of pain. With a barely audible growl, Seto saw red.In the blink of an eye, the grasp on his wrist was released. Joey brought his wrist up to his chest, rubbing it and spitting out curses under his breath. He looked up when he heard a loud yowl.Seto and the Social Worker were facing away from him so Joey had a clear vision of what had happened. Seto had the man’s arm painfully pulled up high behind his back. The brunette whipped his head over his shoulder to look at Joey questioning.“Wheeler?”Joey understood that Kaiba, in his own unique way, was asking him about his wrist. He nodded to the other man.“ ‘m fine, Kaiba,” he mumbled.Satisfied with Joey’s answer, Seto turned back around to face his prey. He may not like Wheeler, but he would not stand for this filth to lay a hand on him while under his roof. He jerked the arm up, causing the man to let out a cry of protest again. Then he yanked the man aside as he forcibly escorted him to the front door. Joey could hear Kaiba’s voice travel as he ripped into the Social Worker.“I hope for your case, you and the Department have good lawyers. After I throw you out, I’ll be making a call to my lawyer. Tell the Department that if it sends any more of its lackeys, I won’t be so easy on them.”When he saw his brother coming, Mokuba opened the door for him. Seto shoved the man out the front door. The man stumbled out and nearly fell on his face. He looked behind him in time to see a smiling Mokuba wave before the door was slammed shut.Mokuba turned back to his brother only to find him talking on his phone with his lawyer. He heard the words “yank” and “injured wrist”. Glancing into the other room, Mokuba put two and two together. The shorter boy walked straight to the kitchen. He opened a cabinet where they kept plastic bags and went to the freezer. He opened the bag and put a bunch of ice cubes in it. He sealed it up, closed the freezer, and walked back out. When Mokuba came back through, Seto was hanging up his cell phone.“What are you doing, Mokuba?” Seto asked.Mokuba paused in his steps.“I heard you say something about Joey’s wrist. I thought he might like some ice,” Mokuba said, holding up the bag.He was surprised when his brother stepped forward with his hand out.“You have homework, Mokuba. I’ll take it to him,” Seto explained.Mokuba shot him a disbelieving look until his face broke out in a small grin.“Oookay, Seto.”Seto stared after his brother confused as the young boy scooped up his backpack from the floor. He watched the boy run up the stairs to his room.I probably don’t want to know what’s going through his head right now, Seto thought. When Seto came back into the lounge room, Joey had his head still down while flexing his injured hand.“Wheeler, let me see your arm,” Seto said, walking up to him.He raised an eyebrow when Joey turned his head away.“I said ‘m fine, Kaiba,”Suddenly, Seto’s sadistic side slipped out. Joey nearly threw himself out of his wheelchair as a freezing cold ice cube was unexpectedly dropped down the back of his neck. It traveled straight down his back, sending bolts of stinging cold across his nerves. He felt a heavy hand come down on his shoulder and squeeze not so gently.“I wasn’t asking, Wheeler,” Seto said in a warning tone.Realizing that Kaiba may repeat his ‘attack’, Joey held out his left arm. Seto walked around Joey’s side to drop down in front of him to sit on a nearby ottoman. Joey noticed the bag of ice Kaiba set down next to him while he inspected Joey’s arm. Seto turned his arm over, rotated the hand back and forth at the wrist, and lightly squeezed different sections of his arm. Joey allowed Kaiba to bring his arm down to rest on the brunette’s knee.Seto picked up the bag of ice and laid it down on the blonde’s wrist. Joey shivered even before the bagged ice touched his skin.“Did you let him in, Wheeler?”Joey lifted his head to glare at Seto.“Ya accusin’ me or askin’ me?” Joey shot back.Seto gave him an annoyed look with an irritated sigh.“Answer the question, Wheeler.”Joey told him he had been in his room when a maid had come in. She had been the one to answer the door and show the leech in. Seto made a mental note to find out which maid had answered the door.“…locket?”Seto blinked. Joey ended up giving him an annoyed look. He had asked him a question when Seto had been thinking about which maid could have answered the door.“I said if you’re gonna be sittin’ this close to me, could I see your card locket?”Seto frowned. He thought Joey had been a weirdo before. Now he was beginning to wonder if the blonde was suffering from a concussion. He shocked himself by reaching up to unlatch the clasp to his card locket.Joey looked equally surprised when Seto laid the locket down in his open palm. Seto concentrated on the injured wrist, checking it over and moving the ice around, all the while keeping a side eye on Joey.Joey opened the locket to stare at the picture longingly. He didn’t have any photos of his family before his parents’ divorce. And frankly, he didn’t want any. He longed for what he perceived as the perfect family. Kaiba’s family before he became a Kaiba. He rubbed a thumb over the glass protecting the precious photograph.Seto wondered just what could be going on in Wheeler’s head. He seemed overly attached to the photograph. It was then that Seto got the weirdest idea in his head. He had lost the photograph, due to him not paying close enough attention to it. The second most important thing in his life; Mokuba being the first.“Wheeler, I have a proposition for you.”Joey lifted his gaze and lowered his hand to his knee.“I’m listening,” Joey replied.“You can hold on to this if you do not let it out of your sight. As long as you stay here, you can hold on to it for me. Lose it…and I will have your head.”Joey was too stunned to say anything. All he could do was nod his head. He lowered his head back down, wondering how many crazy pills Kaiba had popped today. Because whatever he was on, Joey needed to get his hands on some.END OF CHAPTER SIXAuthor’s Note: I hope this chapter wasn’t too confusing for everyone. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
