F is for Forgiveness
It was around eight-thirty when they got home. Seto unlocked the door and let Mokuba go in first. The younger boy was chattering away happily.“That was a really nice dinner. I’m surprised Duke would offer to buy dinner for us on your birthday,” Mokuba remarked.Seto shrugged.“I suppose he felt guilty for holding me up on your birthday,” Seto replied.Mokuba smiled. “That was okay. Joey made sure I had a good time.”Joey and Seto had been dating for close to five years now; he had moved into Kaiba Mansion three years ago. Joey had been worried about Mokuba accepting the relationship, but the young boy had taken great pleasure in referring to him as his big brother, too.Seto frowned at the thought of his boyfriend.“Where is Joey?”Mokuba frowned, too. Usually, the blonde would greet them within seconds of them coming through the door. However, he appeared to be nowhere in sight. It didn’t surprise them that no one else came out. Roland was parking the car and the rest of the staff was off for the day.“I’m going to go grab a snack, big brother,” Mokuba told him.“You just ate,” Seto commented as the boy crossed the entrance hall. The youth turned around and shrugged.“What can I say? I’m a growing boy.”His brother’s laughter followed his comment. He loved the influence his new big brother had on his big brother. With Joey around, his brother laughed and smiled more. Before Joey came along, Seto didn’t even like to hear the words Happy Birthday, let alone have a celebratory dinner with anyone.Suddenly, Mokuba froze. He stopped dead in the middle of the kitchen.Joey. Birthday. Dinner.“Oh no,” Mokuba murmured.Hoping to the heavens above that he was wrong, Mokuba bolted around the kitchen island and through a small hall to the dining room. He slid to a stop in the dining room. The sight he came upon had his heart dropping all the way down to his feet.“Oh no.”Laid out across the dinner table was a large feast. It had a lot of Seto’s favorite dishes, but a few of Mokuba’s, too. When Joey first started dating Seto, they had been together for a month when Seto’s birthday had rolled around. Low on money and unsure of what to get his new boyfriend, Joey had kicked the Chef out and made dinner for the three of them. Mokuba had to leave dinner early that night, since he didn’t want to see his brother show his gratitude to the blonde.Ever since then, it had become an annual tradition for Joey to fix them dinner on Seto’s birthday. This July, he had even made dinner on Mokuba’s birthday.Mokuba couldn’t believe both he and his brother had forgotten about Joey’s special birthday dinner. With Mokuba being sixteen, Seto had been steadily giving him more responsibilities. He had currently been working on a big project while Seto had been reviewing his employees’ benefits package and contracts with other companies. Neither one of them had even thought about Joey after Duke had said he had invited Joey out to dinner, but Joey had said he was busy.Suddenly, a new thought ran through Mokuba’s head. Had Duke really invited Joey? He knew Duke still got on Joey’s nerves, but wasn’t quite sure how deep it went.“SETO!” Mokuba shouted, running out of the room.Seto was still standing in the entrance hall, looking over his calendar for tomorrow on his phone, when Mokuba came running up to him. Seto frowned as Mokuba came zooming up to him. He was hysterical and his speech was rushed.“SetoweforgotallaboutJoeyandhisbirthdaydinnerandIthinkDukeknewaboutitandliedtous,” Mokuba exclaimed.Seto pocketed his phone and brought his hands up to Mokuba’s shoulders.“Mokuba, calm down and say your words slowly,” Seto instructed.Unable to calm himself down, Mokuba twirled around, snagged his brother’s wrist, and yanked. Seto stumbled slightly as his brother pulled him through the ground floor to the dining room. His brother stopped outside the dining room and shoved him inside. Surprised by his younger brother’s antics, Seto caught himself on the table.“Mokuba, what the He-…” Seto’s voice died in his throat as he surveyed the view in front of him.Mokuba walked around behind him to his side. He saw recognition flash in Seto’s eyes as he turned his head to look at him.“Oh no.”Mokuba nodded with a sad smile. His thoughts exactly. Seto quickly sprung into action.“Mokuba, check the house. See if you can find Joey,” Seto said, quickly turning to leave the room.“Where are you going?” Mokuba shouted.“Security room!”On his way to the security room, Seto met up with Roland. He quickly explained the situation to the man as he made his way to the security room. While Seto did that, Roland went to join Mokuba in his search for Joey.Once he reached the security room, Seto sat down at the main computer and brought up the live video feed from earlier that day. He started it at that morning and fast forwarded. The videos showed Mokuba and Seto leaving the house with Roland. Around nine, it showed Joey rushing down the stairs and out the door. Around noon, the front door opened and Joey came in carrying grocery bags. Yami and Yugi followed behind him with more bags. They carried those bags into the kitchen and helped Joey unload everything. After that, they talked for a few minutes while Joey cleaned up and set the dining room table. Then Yugi and Yami left. From one to five, Joey prepared ingredients and fixed the different dishes. Slowly, he brought them out to the table and kept lids on them that would keep the food good and fresh. When finished, Joey ran out of the room and up the stairs to their shared bedroom. Seto knew at this point the blonde had probably had gone in and taken a shower. His suspicions were confirmed when his puppy came out patting down wet hair. Joey came back downstairs and the time on the video made the time 5:30. Joey knew that was around the time that Seto got home.Seto watched silently as his boyfriend lit some candles he had brought out and sat down at the table. For the next two hours, Joey sat there. He fidgeted in his seat, nibbled on a breadstick, and kept glancing up at the clock. He would occasionally pull out his phone and check it, only to lower it back down with a longing look on his face.“Oh, gods, Joey.”At 07:35:55, Joey pushed his chair back and stood up. He leaned over and blew out the candles before ducking his head while on his way out of the room. That was the last any of the videos caught of Joey. Seto leaned back in his chair shaking his head.He couldn’t believe he had forgotten. On this day, his day of birth, his puppy had made him what looked to be the most special dinner ever. And he hadn’t been there. Seto slumped his head forward with his hands covering his face.He heard Mokuba enter the room, but didn’t lift his head.“Seto, I can’t find Joey. I can’t find Scout, either.”Seto’s head snapped up, making Mokuba jump back from his side.“What did you just say?” Seto gasped.Mokuba repeated his words. Seto slid his chair back under the desk and looked back at the videos. It was difficult to locate Joey, as he knew where most of the video cameras were. Finally, Mokuba pointed at the screen and exclaimed, “There he is!”Sure enough, on Camera 4, Joey appeared at 07:42:12. He was going out the side garage door with a big, fluffy dog. He slipped out the door after latching a leash onto the dog’s collar. That was it! He knew where Joey had gone. He would be damned if he forgot what other day was today./……/
Arf! Arf! Joey smiled sadly as Scout ran ahead of him. They were walking along the far side of Domino Park. Tucked deep in there was a long memorial wall. The special wall had names written all over it and the stone that wall was made of allowed for a person’s reflection to be seen in the mirrored wall.
A few years ago, a mass fire had broken out in Domino. Many buildings had caught fire and there had been many injuries, even more deaths. The wall was a memorial wall for those whose lives had been taken. Joey walked along the wall with his eyes taking in all the names. Scout’s leash swung loosely from his hand.He noticed when Scout stopped in front of a particular place of the wall. The big, brown and white St. Bernard sat calmly in front of the wall with his tongue hanging out. Glancing up at the wall with a smile, Joey pulled his out of his jacket pocket to scratch him on the head.“Good boy, Scout,” Joey murmured.Hearing the trigger words, Scout laid down beside him and closed his eyes with a big sigh. Joey smiled down at him before turning his attention to the wall. He brought his hand up to trace a single name etched in the wall just above his head.Joseph Wheeler, Sr. After Joey had moved out, his father had finally sobered up. He was going to AA meetings and working two jobs. They had reconciled the week before the fire over a nice lunch. His father was doing better; he was trying. The day of the fire had been his day off.Joey stared at himself in the reflection while looking at his father’s name.“Hi, dad. It’s been a while. It’s been three years today. You won’t believe the crazy day I had. You see, today’s also Seto’s birthday. I know I tell you that every year, but I just wanted to remind you. As usual, I made my big dinner for him, but he…never showed.”Joey lowered his hand, but continued staring up at the wall.“We’ve been really happy together. He makes me happy. Never thought you’d hear me say that, huh? I remember that day you had asked me if I loved him.” Pause. “And I do.”Tears came to his eyes. This happened every year. He would make dinner for his lover and Mokuba. On the first anniversary of the fire, Joey had told his lover where he was going, but that he had only wanted Scout along for company. Last year, he thought of asking Seto to come, too, but the brunette had been under the weather at the time.“I love you, too, dad. Even through all the hard times you and I went through, I still loved you. Nothing can change the fact that you’re still my old man. I’m just sorry I never got to introduce you to Seto. I was going to tell him the night of the fire that I wanted him to meet you.”“And I would have loved to have met him.”Joey only slightly jumped. He had heard someone approaching, but hadn’t realized who it was. He lowered his head as Seto stopped beside him. He watched as Seto knelt down to lay a bouquet of flowers on the ground against the wall. When Seto stood up, he slipped his hand into Joey’s and interlocked their fingers, gently squeezing.“I want to thank you, Mr. Wheeler, for bringing Joey into my life. He probably didn’t tell you what the turning point to our relationship was. You had yelled at him, calling him names, and caught him in the face with a bottle you threw. After he ran out, Joey had the courage to come to the Kaiba Medical Center.”Joey blushed. He couldn’t believe Seto remembered that day. The doctor that had treated him had given him a tetanus shot and some stitches. He hadn’t noticed Mokuba in a separate hall when he had first come in; the little shit had snuck off and called his brother. Kaiba had appeared in the doorway right as the doctor was finishing up.The doctor had stood up to greet the CEO while Joey had jumped to his feet and stood far away at the window with his back to them. After sharing pleasantries with the doctor, Seto had shooed him away. Then he had slowly crossed the room to stand beside Joey. Joey had refused to look his way, which had worked in Seto’s favor. He had surprised the blonde by leaning forward and pressing a soft kiss over the bandage on his cheek.Joey squeezed his hand before stepping closer to lean his weight on his lover. A quick glance in the wall’s reflection revealed a small smile appearing on Seto’s face.“I know he forgave you for that. I didn’t understand at the time how he could. But I understand now. Your son is your son, no matter what you do. So I forgive you, too. Without you, I wouldn’t have him in my life and I would still be lonely. I’m only sorry we didn’t meet when you were still alive.”A tear escaped down the side of Joey’s face and he sniffed.“Told ya you’d like him, dad. He may be an asshole sometimes, but he’s still my ass,” Joey chuckled.Seto snorted. Joey would say that. In his opinion, it wasn’t very romantic, but it was the truth. Seto turned to Joey and brought his free hand up to run his knuckles over his cheek. Joey closed his eyes with a sigh.“I hope you’ll forgive me, puppy. I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to forget about your dinner,” Seto murmured.Joey smiled, opening his eyes.“I know, dragon,” Joey whispered back. They both smiled. Seto leaned down and closed their distance to softly kiss his lover. When he eased back, he kept his forehead gently pressed against Joey’s.“I forgive ya, Set. I’ll just yell at your secretary later. ‘s her fault for not shoving you out the door on time.”
Seto’s smile brushed across his lips.“For once, you can’t blame her. Duke invited me and Mokuba out.”Seto was surprised by the hand that suddenly shoved him in the chest. He stumbled back from his lover as Joey held him back at arm’s length. There was a light in Joey’s eyes that made Seto hope Joey didn’t go for the face.“What. Did you. Just say?” Joey growled.Seto explained that Duke had told them he had invited Joey, but the blonde had refused. He also told him Mokuba’s thought that he had lied to the Kaiba brothers. Joey let out a foul string of curses, causing Scout’s head to shoot up.“That foul bastard! He ain’t lying. Least not about that. He did ask me out, but he didn’t tell me about inviting you and Mokie. He shouldn’t have, considering he heard me telling Yugi about the dinner last week.”Seto was now beginning to understand why Duke still got on Joey’s nerves. He knew the other CEO was flirtatious around him, but Duke went after everything with two legs. Joey snapped his head down to Scout who tipped his head back to look up at Joey.“Time to go hunting, Scout.”The St. Bernard lumbered to his feet with his tongue hanging out his mouth. Joey turned around and gave Seto a quick smack on his lips before breezing past him. He stood there stunned for a minute while Seto brushed past him, too. Suddenly, Joey’s words made far better sense in his head.“Oh, crap. Puppy, wait! Let’s talk about this!” Seto said, turning to chase after him.“Nothing to talk about. I ain’t forgiving Dice-boy for this. I’m gonna give ‘em an ass-whoopin’.”Oh, dear. Ass-whooping on the Oh-shit-o-meter for Joey meant lawyers and the trauma team at the hospital. Unless he could stop Joey from reaching the park entrance. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
