BITTER LOVE
The three ate quietly at the table, exchanging looks between bites of food, hoping someone would decide to speak and break the uncomfortable silence that seemed to take place among the three of them.
Bakura, however, not choosing to eat as he claimed Anzu probably poisoned the food, enjoyed the silence, especially the lack of bickering the girl, Anzu, always seemed to provide at times like this.
“ How,” Anzu hesitated, noting the glare Bakura shot her way. “ How do you like the food, Ryou?” Her eyes reluctantly shifted from the former thief to rest on Ryou, stuffing the noddles in his mouth with the chopsticks, before stopping when he realized all eyes were on him and he was eating rather….un-Ryou like.
He even put Jou and Honda to shame.
“ It’s wonderful, Anzu.” He chirped, managing to swallow all the food to smile sweetly at her across the table. She returned the smile, seemingly satisfied and happy about his answer.
“ Good! Because it took me forever to cook this!” She cried, playfully glaring at the two boys’ seated at the table.
“ Could’ve fooled me.” Bakura murmured.
Anzu caught his comment, gritting her teeth and glaring at him over her cup. “ How would you know?” She snapped, nearly bristling in anger. “ You haven’t even tried it!”
He scoffed, meeting her eyes in a cool, curt stare. “ Just by looking at it I can tell.”
She mocked him with a scoff of her own. “ Well excuse me for not bringing raw, un-cooked steak to the table!” She looked away from him and continued eating, nearly breaking the chopsticks held in her hand.
Inconsiderate jerk… She thought with a foul pout, her appetite leaving her. Bakura just had to go and ruin her good mood.
She looked back at Ryou, watching him eat. I hope he isn’t being nice by saying its good when it’s not…Knowing Ryou he would do something like that to not offend the other person.
“ Ryou….you don’t have to eat it if you don’t want. I’ll understand.” She assured, trying to smile. But in all honesty she wanted him to like her food. She’d slaved over the Japanese cuisine in hopes of pleasing Ryou. As for Bakura, she could care less about that jerk!
He shook his head. “ It’s absolutely delicious!” He praised.
Anzu smiled, her happy mood returning in a blink of an eye. “ Great! Do you want some more?” She asked, gesturing to his empty plate.
He nodded eagerly, standing when she did to take his plate to get him some more. “ I can get it.” He assured, not wanting her own food to get cold just to get him second servings.
She smiled, taking the plate from him. “ You’re the guest, now sit back down. Besides, it makes me happy to know you liked it enough to want seconds!”
He hesitated a moment, before taking his seat and watching her walk into the kitchen, a smile pulling at his lips. “ Thank you, Anzu….”
Bakura rolled his eyes. I’m going to be sick. With all those mushy looks and googly eyes they kept giving each other, he was sure he was going to be sick for the rest of his life.
Ryou caught his yami’s nauseating look. “ Are you okay? You sure you’re not hungry?”
Bakura glared at him icily. “ I’m fine. Leave me alone.” He stood from his seat at the table, retreating to Anzu’s room upstairs.
Anzu, despite how much the tomb robber got on her nerves, watched him leave with worry, just as she made her way back to the table with Ryou’s plate of food.
“ Is he okay? He’s not sick is he?”
Ryou sighed, shaking his head. “ He wouldn’t tell him. But I know something’s wrong.” He thanked her quietly when she set his plate of food in front of him.
She put her hands on her hips, huffing out in frustration. “ I’ll go check on him.” She announced, confidently walking to the stairs.
Ryou blinked, eyeing her carefully. “ Are you sure? I’ll go if you don’t want to.”
She smiled, but he couldn’t see it as her back was facing him. “ No, I’ll go. Stay here and enjoy the food, okay?” She gave him a fleeting smile before she dashed upstairs in a hurry.
Ryou blinked. I wonder why she’s so worried. I thought she hated my yami… He shrugged nonetheless, returning to his food as he picked up his chopsticks and quietly murmured at the empty table,
“ Itadakimasu.”
Anzu didn’t bother knocking--it was her room after all--stepping in and looking for the spirit to find him languidly sprawled across her bed, his eyes closed.
She smirked; how vulnerable he looked, just waiting for her to scare him. It couldn’t hurt right? It’d certainly snap him out of whatever foul mood he was in.
Taking slow, quiet steps, keeping her eyes on his face and closed eyes, she prepared to leap up and tackle him when his voice stopped her.
“ I know you’re there. You breathe louder than a camel.”
Anzu glared. “ What’s that supposed to mean!?” She demanded, hands on hips.
He smirked, a chuckle rising in his throat as he felt her presence beside him, looming over him.
“ What do you think it means?”
“ How should I know?” She mumbled, mouth twisting in a frown. “ I’m not a mind reader you know!”
“ A relief.” He breathed, opening his eyes to stare up at her, hovering over him with a flustered expression. His eyes deepened, the red color almost frightening as they rolled down her body rather openly.
“ Wouldn’t want you knowing my thoughts, now would I?”
Anzu blinked, gasping afterward when she caught the meaning of his words. “ Ugh! You pervert!” If she had a purse right now she would’ve smacked him right across the head with it!
He sat up, leaning against the headboard of her bed, his eyes looking past her. “ Why are you here?”
She folded her arms across her chest. “ This is my room you know,”
He scowled. “ You know what I mean!”
“ I came to see if you were okay.” She replied honestly, her eyes searching his face for any signs of discomfort.
“ I’m fine, now get the hell out.” He ordered, opening his eyes to glare at her.
She huffed angrily. “ You cant tell me what to do! This isn’t your house! It’s mine!” She cried indignantly.
When he didn’t answer back like always with some smart answer, she settled beside him on the bed, facing him. “ You sure you’re feeling alright?” She reached out to feel his forehead, to see if he might have a temperature, when he rudely slapped her hand away.
“ Don’t touch me!” He hissed.
Talk about déjà vu…She thought with a roll of her eyes. “ Listen, Bakura, I’m being serious. Are you sick or something? You’re acting really weird.”
“ You really want to know?” He said, expression serious. Anzu nodded, leaning in to hear him better.
“ The smell of your grotesque food made me sick.”
Ryou blinked when he heard a loud SLAP! from upstairs, the sound unmistakable. He knew who had slapped and who had taken the hit, almost grieving for Bakura, but he knew, more than likely, that his yami probably deserved it.
Maybe I should go see if everything is alright… He shifted to stand when he heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs, almost stomping, before Anzu appeared, mumbling and no doubt cursing the thief upstairs.
“ No good….unappreciative…egotistical…”
“ Anzu?” He interrupted, stopping her ramblings as she retook her seat across from him.
“ Is everything alright? Are you alright?” He continued, watching her carefully in concern.
She lifted her head, a smile blossoming on her face. “ Never felt better in my life, Ryou-koi!”
His eyes rounded, if possible, his mouth hanging open. Ryou….koi? He blushed and resumed eating, keeping his head down the entire time, the tingling sensation in his stomach un-ignored.
Bakura scowled, rubbing the pink handprint on his right cheek with care. That no good woman, how dare she! No woman had ever hit him! He hissed when he rubbed the welt too hard.
“ Kuso!” He cursed. That wench really hit hard too! He sneered, throwing his legs off the bed and debating whether to go downstairs and confront the little busu or stay up here and wait for her to come back and apologize.
That’s when he realized something. He was winning their little challenge from earlier. There was no way she’d like him, let alone love him. It was obvious how much she hated him.
He smirked, moving back on the bed, tucking his arms under his head as he stared up at the ceiling. Maybe he could make her hate him so much that she’d give up on Ryou and leave him and his hikari be.
But did he really want that? He’d rather be sent to the shadow realm again before admitting that her presence was oddly…comforting. It was the first time he felt compelled by a girl, especially one of only sixteen. She was kind, generous, put others before herself, and always stood up for her friends and loved ones.
She was even willing to risk her life just to protect my baka hikari from me…the fool. Did she actually think she could go against me and win?
He let a small chuckle slip. She was truly unique, like a golden coin in a pile of rocks. There was no denying her beauty, and that was by far amusing to Bakura as he had seen women many times during his life in Egypt millenniums ago. He was the cunning, handsome, courageous thief all the women wanted.
In those days, the women practically groveled at his feet for his attention, did outrageous acts to get him to look their way. But there was always something dull about them that made them unexciting and he chose to ignore them.
Anzu, on the other hand, ignored him. She treated him like a normal person with nothing special about them. To her, he was nothing more than an annoying thief who abused and used her best friend.
She captivated his attention, much like Ryou had when he’d stumbled upon the shy, reserved teen who was seemingly a loner at the time.
But he changed that, he made Ryou what he was today. A treasure. Perhaps he could do the same with the girl? Make her more valuable? She was already, but he knew she hid her full potential under all those layers that stereotyped her as the friendly, good-girl who couldn’t kill a bug.
Perhaps she was, perhaps she wasn’t. But he knew, in the name of Ra, that he’d be the one to find out just what the girl, Anzu, was capable of.
She was still a girl, but he could make her a woman. He smirked. Yes, a woman. He was positive she was still ‘innocent’.
He sat up when the door to the room opened again, but in stead of Anzu, it was Ryou this time.
“ What do you want?” He snapped, eyeing the boy as he made his way around the bed till he was standing on his right, a tray in his arms.
“ Anzu wanted me to give you this. She also said if you don’t eat it she’ll shove it down your throat.” Ryou quoted, word for word.
A slip of a smirk crossed his face. “ I already told her I don’t want her damn food.”
Ryou smiled, tilting the tray to give him a full view of just what was on the plate. Bakura blinked, before his eyes narrowed.
It was steak, raw too. How’d she know?
He grabbed the plate from Ryou, leaving the boy with just the tray. Examining the steak a moment he decided it was safe. But he couldn’t help wonder why she bothered. After he’d treated her like trash, almost snapping at her, she still worried about his health.
His brows drew in the middle tightly. Why? Why the hell would she care? He put the plate back on the tray still in Ryou’s hands. “ I don’t want it.”
“ But--”
“ I said I don’t want it!” He barked, shooting his hikari a nasty glare. Now get the hell out! He added through their mind link so only he heard.
“ I knew you were going to be stubborn.” A voice mumbled.
Bakura and Ryou looked in the direction of the door where Anzu was, hands on her hips, frowning.
“ I guess that leaves me with the last option.” She declared, walking into the room.
Bakura eyed her warily. “ Last option…?” He wondered if she was really going to force feed him.
“ I thought you liked raw steak?” She stood beside Ryou, looking down at Bakura on the bed. “ Do you like it cooked?”
“ I do,” He replied, voice stern. Then he smirked. “ But if its from you, I don’t.”
She huffed angrily, something he found rather endearing and childish, but he couldn’t deny she looked attractive when she pursed her lips. His eyes stayed on her lips, trapped in a trance by her full lips, a natural peach color that was almost inviting.
He looked away sharply, cursing under his breath. She seemed oblivious to his stare and thoughts, leaning down to stare at him eye to eye.
“ Seriously, are you feeling okay? You’re scaring me.”
Bakura scowled. “ I said I’m fine! Stop treating me like some damn child!”
She smiled, sitting on the bed beside him. “ I know. But I know just the thing to make you feel better.”
He stiffened, shock frozen, though his expression did not show it, as he felt her pull him into a loose hug, her head falling on his right shoulder.
Till now he realized he’d never truly been hugged by someone. Not even Ryou hugged him. The boy always kept his distance, seemingly knowing that he didn’t like being touched in an affectionate manner. This, however, didn’t stop Anzu from being Anzu.
“ Get off me.”
“ Stop complaining.” She snapped, hugging him tighter. “ I’m just hugging you, so calm down. It’s not like you’re going to melt.”
Bakura’s breaths came out sharper and quicker. Her body was so warm compared to his cold one. It seemed he was always cold. He noted also that her body seemed to fit perfectly against his, the curves of her breasts and hips molding to his chest and waist.
Her hair smelled like fresh fruits. He absently pressed his nose into the silky brown tresses, inhaling secretly, savoring the scent of her.
She pulled away after awhile, and he was left as he was, a cold void. He didn’t meet her eyes, looking to the side. He didn’t want to risk her looking him in the eyes and seeing that he did actually feel, and he had actually enjoyed being hugged.
“ Don’t touch me again,” He hissed.
She sighed, getting off the bed. “ Well, I tried.” She whispered to Ryou, before both teens left, leaving him alone in the room again.
If he weren’t Bakura, he would’ve hugged her back. But he was Bakura, and his pride and reputation wouldn’t let his emotions control his life.
He shut his eyes tightly, leaning back against the headrest, and for a brief moment he felt she was still here, in his arms, pressed against him.
“ I swear. He’s like an ice cube,” She shook her head, looking away from the room to stare at Ryou as they both made their way down the hall. “ And I thought Kaiba was bad.” She commented.
Ryou smiled. “ Don’t let what he says get to you. Bakura’s always been like that.”
“ Like what?” She asked. “ An emotionless jerk who can’t show some respect?”
He sighed. “ I just wish you two got along. I hate seeing you two at each others throats all the time.”
She frowned. “ Me? He’s the one always insulting me. Whether its my food, or my appearance, that guy’s never got anything nice to say.”
“ He was like that with me at first,” Ryou admitted quietly, walking side-by-side down the stairs with Anzu. “ But after awhile, he finally opened up to me and showed me what he was really like.”
“ What’s he really like then?” She asked, stopping at the bottom step, looking up at him as he stayed behind, seemingly in a daze.
“ He was the most loving person I knew. In his own way, he showed me how much he cared for me.”
“ By hurting you?” She snapped, angry Ryou was defending Bakura.
“ He never used to hit me,” Ryou confessed, absently rubbing his right arm with his left hand. “ It started when I began hanging around you, Yugi, and the others. Perhaps….” He hesitated. “ Perhaps he was just jealous, and that was his way of showing me I was his…”
“ What he did wasn’t right,” She said. “ If he really loved you he would’ve never done those things to you.”
“ But you don’t understand….that’s his only way of showing affection.”
“ By hurting the person he loves?” She cried, incredulous.
Ryou shook his head, stepping down the rest of the stairs and stopping beside her. “ Did you know he never had parents? They died when he was a child, and he was forced to steal to live. He was never shown affection as a child, didn’t have a mother to show him love and tenderness, that’s why he’s the way he is…”
She nodded slowly, the words sinking in one at a time. “ I never knew….” She bowed her head. “ I feel horrible now.”
“ It’s not your fault. He just had...a tough childhood.”
“ Is that how he became a thief?” She asked.
Ryou nodded, both going into the family room to sit on the sofa. “ At first he just stole to get food and clothes. But after awhile, living on the streets for such a long time, he wanted to live in a home, with a bed, so he started killing people and taking their homes, till he’d get caught and he’d repeat the process, going from home to home, killing on a regular basis.”
“ I see…..” Anzu didn’t know what she felt toward Bakura right now. Half of her felt sorry for him, sympathized him because of his hard life, but the other part of her didn’t feel remorse at all, she felt he’d taken it too far by stealing and killing just to get by.
“ After that, killing seemed to be natural to him, as was stealing, and it became a part of his life, a part of him.”
Anzu nodded as Ryou continued on, trying to let her brain register everything.
She almost wished she could’ve gone back in time to help Bakura out, give him a home, food, clothing. Anything to keep him from not becoming the heartless killer thief he’d became as an adult.
“ I’ll be right back….” She said, standing.
Ryou nodded in understanding, watching her go upstairs.
“ Bakura….?”
“ What?” The voice inside snapped, gruff and coarse. She stilled from opening the door, but did nonetheless desperate to make amends with him.
She closed the door behind her, leaning against it a moment, before she advanced to the bed where he was, his eyes following her till she was beside him.
He stilled when she leaned down, her lips brushing his. “ What do you think---” The words were swallowed up in the kiss as she pressed her lips firmly over his, silencing him completely.
His eyes became heavy, his lips tingling under her parted lips that were moist and hot to the touch, warming his cold lips with the heat of hers as her breath wafted across his lower lip.
Grabbing her by her shoulders he pulled her down on top of him until she was straddling his hips, his immobile lips coming to life as they began moving against hers.
It was the strangest sensation she’d ever felt. This was the first time she’d kissed Bakura willingly. She even initiated it!
His lips were cool and soft, pliable, moving with hers so perfectly it was like they’d practiced to get it this right.
His lips parted, his breath mingling with hers, a soft minty scent she was surprised came from him. She yelped when his tongue darted out and flicked through the gap in her lips, burrowing in her mouth to taste her.
She pulled back, panting hard, staring at him with wide eyes. She couldn’t believe she’d gotten that far with Bakura. It was like she’d been pulled in some kind of dream, everything felt real, but it was almost too good to be true.
His eyes were misty, a swirl of red and black, his bangs and eyelashes casting shadows over them, making him look cynical.
He licked his lips, the action slow and precise. She felt his cold fingers grope the back of her neck, pushing her head back down till their lips were caressing again.
She moved her head to pull back, but his grip was firm, keeping her head in place.
“ Stop moving,” He snapped.
“ I thought you hated me….?” She said, trying to gain back lost breath. To say the least, that kiss of his was breathtaking. She could tell he was more experienced than Ryou, seeing as he no doubt had plenty of mistress’ back in Egypt when he was a thief.
“ Ryou told me…” She panted, sucking in a deep breath.
“ Told you what?” He tugged at her bottom lip, half-listening, half-lost in his task.
“ About your childhood…” She said, moving out of his lips reach, sitting in his lap completely.
“ What?” He hissed.
She was surprised when he shoved her off him. “ So, you came here to pity me, is that right?” He sneered, laughing bitterly. “ I don’t want your pathetic sympathy.”
“ It’s not that….it’s just….I never knew, and I understand now why you’re like you are….” She explained quietly, searching his face for any sign of emotion.
“ Understand?” He laughed bitterly. “ You could never understand my life.”
“ Well, I want to,” She said confidently, chin high. “ I want to know everything. I don’t even want you to skip the gory parts just because I’m a girl.”
He smirked. “ You don’t know what you’re saying, little girl.”
“ I’m not little!” She shouted. “ I’m sixteen! And stop calling me girl! I have a name!”
He smirked, pulling her back into his lap. “ That so?”
She blushed, but forced her answer out optimistically. “ Yes.”
He ran a hand through her short brown hair, letting his fingers run through the strands. “ I can see why my hikari picked you.” He mumbled lowly, so low she barely caught the words.
“ I thought you thought I was ugly.” She mumbled, lightening the odd silence that overlapped his last statement.
He smirked, but it vanished after a second. “ Who said I changed my mind?”
She made to move out of his lap. “ If you’re going to be like that…”
He yanked her back, his right hand tilting her head back, letting his lips devour hers without warning, finishing off what she’d started earlier.
She grew slack in his arms, kissing back with tender strokes of her lips under his as her hands found homage in his wild, untamed white hair.
Bakura was addicted to her, sweeping his tongue into her mouth to taste her, seeking more of that strawberry flavor that lingered on her tongue as it swirled around his in a heated dance.
He shifted on the bed, letting himself fall fully on the mattress, bringing her down with him, not breaking the contact as their lips and tongues continued to ravish the other, quenching the others lusty thirst.
His hands roamed down her back, savoring her feminine curves as his hands stroked her hips and back thighs, earning moans of delight from Anzu.
Shamelessly he cupped her firm buttocks, squeezing and wandering like untamed beasts.
Anzu shuddered when she felt him grind her body down on his, purposely letting her thighs rub over the bulge between his legs.
The heat between them grew till it consumed them in a blaze of desire and lust, touching and kissing anything in reach.
Anzu pushed away, the knock at the door snapping her out of her daze. Bakura growled in frustration when she retreated from him, blushing in embarrassment and shock of her own actions.
“ Anzu? A-Are you okay? You’ve been in there for awhile.” Ryou said from outside the hall.
She cleared her throat. “ Yeah, I’ll be out in a minute, Ryou.”
Bakura sat up, moving to pull her back when she backed away. “ I…maybe we should just stop it at here, Bakura.”
He glared at the door, then looked back at her. “ Why? Isn’t this what he wanted? For us to get along?” He grabbed her and pulled her back on the bed, crawling on top of her like a predator. “ Besides….I could get used to this…” He bent his head, kissing her roughly, his hands overlapping her breasts.
She gasped, pulling back to breathe. “ Don’t you think…we’re moving too fast?” She panted, swallowing sharply. Just ten minutes ago he wanted nothing to do with her, and now he couldn’t get enough of her.
He smirked, moving his head down to nibble and suck her neck. “ Don’t you mean not fast enough?”
She shook her head. “ Bakura…we can’t. Ryou’s right outside. I can’t do this to him.”
“ This is what he wanted, isn’t that right?” He hissed, moving his hands to squeeze her shoulders, almost bruising her.
“ Yes, but….”
“ But what?” He demanded, nearly spitting in her face.
“ You don’t love me. I can’t…..I can’t do this with someone who doesn’t love me.”
The words struck a cord in him, one he never knew even existed. He backed off, getting off her, blindly watching her get up and off the bed, walking out in the hall where Ryou was waiting for her.
It was too soon to love her. Hell, he thought he’d hated her, but after what happened just now, he didn’t know what the hell to think. Everything was so damn confusing.
But why did he stop? He always got what he wanted, whether the other person wanted it or not. Everything was about him and what he wanted.
So then why? Why!?
He looked at his hands. What was wrong with him? Never in his life had he craved a woman so much. It was always the other way around: women wanted him.
Never had a woman turned him down because of love. They always gave themselves to him just to be with him, just to please him, whether he treated them with respect or not, as long as they could be with him in some way.
But she, she wouldn’t give herself to him because he didn’t love her. Then why did she start something she wasn’t going to finish?
He punched the mattress angrily, making the bed shirt and squeak from the blow.
He stopped from punching the mattress to let out his anger when he realized something. She had admitted she couldn’t continue because he didn’t love her, but then, did she love him?
She never said it, but she never denied it either. If she didn’t love him she would’ve said she couldn’t go through with it because she didn’t love him, and he didn’t love her either. But she just said him, only him. Why? Could she love him? If so, why? Why would she love something like him?
He could easily be using her, so why would she risk getting close to him?
Nothing makes sense! Bakura was going to find out, one way or another. He wanted her as his, and he was going to have her.
A/N: Whew! Now that was one long chapter! As for Bakura’s background, I made all that stuff up. Lol. But who knows, my guessing could actually be right!
Bakura: Woman! You could never figure my childhood!
Anzu: I feel so bad for Bakura…*sniffs*
Ryou: We don’t even know if what the authoress wrote is fact! >o<
Bakura: How should I know? I have a horrible memory.
Anzu: Oh well……so Bakura, you really changed in this chapter! I think you’re softening up!
Bakura: Who are you again?
Anzu&Ryou: *anime fall*
Bakura: When is that lemon coming!? I want my damn threesome!
Anzu&Ryou: o.O
Bakura: What? As it was the authoress was cruel by giving me a small sample of Anzu, now I want the whole thing!
Anzu: Hey! I thought you forgot about that? I thought you even forgot who I was!
Bakura: No, I just said that to get the authoress’ point across that I have a bad memory…
Anzu&Ryou: *anime fall*
Bakura: Honestly…..who do you take me for?
Marik: A fool with no life.
Bakura: Where the hell did you come from?!
Marik: Don’t concern yourself with that. I’ve come to take Anzu with me to have many hours of passionate sex with her!!
Anzu: Oh God! O.o
Bakura: Don’t you dare…..she’s mine!
Ryou: *meeker* And mine!
Marik: I knew she was frisky! Two men at once? You bad little girl! *spanks her*
Anzu: Eep! O.o I feel so….dirty…
Bakura: *chases Marik with his dagger* I warned you not to touch her!! Prepare to die!
Ryou& Anzu: *munching on popcorn*
Ryou: Might as well enjoy the show right?
Anzu: Right!
