Bounty Hunter
Chapter 6
@-->-->----
In the minutes following the gunshot, chaos ensued.
Kaiba struck out at Saiyukiro, knocking the gun from the startled man's hand before he could get off a second shot. The action caused the man to come out of his daze and he went on the defence, but Kaiba had learned his fighting skills from the best teachers in Japan. Saiyukiro never had a chance. A swift strike to the ribs, then a roundhouse kick to the chin while he was doubled over in pain, and Saiyukiro dropped like a stone.
Kaiba glared at him for a second before turning his glare onto Jounouchi. "You idiot! What did you think you were doing? He had a gun! You could have been... No..." His furious tirade stuck in his throat as he noticed the blood.
The blonde teen glared back at Kaiba as he struggled to rise from where he'd fallen. "You're welcome. If that's the gratitude I get, remind me not to save your ass next time."
"No! Don't try to move." Kaiba hurried to Jounouchi's side. He knelt down and tried to push the blonde teen back down to the floor, scowling at him as he resisted and continued to sit up. "Damn it, Jou! Lie down! Can't you tell that you've been shot?"
Jou's eyes went wide, but he still resisted Kaiba's pushing. "Wha'?" He stared at Kaiba as if he'd just become like the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon and grown three heads.
Kaiba glared at him. "I said, you've been shot."
"I heard ya. As if I didn't already know that. Kinda noticed the pain. No, I meant... Did you just call me... Jou?" The blonde teen looked up at the brunette, looking completely stunned. "That's the first time you've ever called me that."
"I... Don't be ridiculous! This is no time to be concerning yourself with something so trivial!" Giving up on making the irritating teen lie down and rest, Kaiba pulled his mobile phone out of his pocket and turned away to place a call. His movement had the added benefit of keeping Jou from seeing the faint colour washing into his cheeks.
"Doctor Himikuro. Seto Kaiba. I need you to meet me at my estate in half an hour. It's a gunshot wound." Kaiba paused, listening to the doctor's question and turned around to get the answer, thankful that his cheeks had returned to their normal colouring. "It's his upper left arm. The shot was made at close range. Lean forward."
Jou frowned at the odd conversation, then realised that Kaiba had said the last bit to him and not the doctor. He leaned forward and Kaiba moved so he could see the back of Jou's arm, his hand resting lightly on the blonde teen's shoulder for balance. "Yes, there's an exit wound." He moved back, but his hand remained on Jou's shoulder as he finished the call to the doctor.
"Come on. The doctor's a busy man, you don't want to keep him waiting." There was something odd in Kaiba's voice and he refused to look at Jou.
The blonde boy frowned. "Kaiba... Are you feelin' okay? You're bein' really weird. First ya use my name and now you're actin' like you're all worried. And what's with the hand? Since when have ya been willin' to touch me? Ya usually act like I've got germs or somethin'" He peered more closely at the brunette. "Are you blushin'?"
"No!" Kaiba turned away, trying to will the heat out of his flushed cheeks as he subconsciously cradled his hand to his chest as if it had just been burned. "I... I just..." He forced himself to stop and take a deep breath, before he blurted out something he'd no doubt regret, once he had regained the sanity that seemed to have momentarily deserted him. Surely, the vaguely familiar mix of emotions that he was currently feeling was only a result of the tense situation. It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that Jou... Jounouchi... had just been injured.
Kaiba stood up and scowled down at Jou. "We've wasted enough time. Move it, Jounouchi!"
Jou sighed and struggled to get to his feet, then swayed slightly. He gasped and tensed as Kaiba gave an exasperated sigh and moved to his side, slipping his arm around the shorter boy's waist for support. Jou relaxed again and gave Kaiba a sheepish smile. "Uh... thanks."
Kaiba looked away. "Do not mention it. Ever."
Together they headed for the door, but Jou paused and looked back over his shoulder with a frown. "What about him? Is it okay to just leave him like this?"
"One of my security guards is waiting in the car. I'll send him back to deal with that pathetic loser."
Jou shook his head. "Hate to tell ya, Kaiba, but that 'pathetic loser' almost... almost..." He went pale and shivered, unable to finish what he'd been saying.
Kaiba's response was unusually quiet. "I know. Don't think about it now."
Jou nodded and they continued down to Kaiba's waiting car in silence, neither teen pointing out how tightly the other was holding him.
@-->-->----
The car had barely started moving when Kaiba noticed Jou's pained wince. With a low growl, he leaned over and released the blonde boy's seatbelt, ignoring both Jou's startled exclamation and his own feeling of déjà vu.
"Kaiba! What are ya...?" Jou fell silent at Kaiba's glare.
"Just keep quiet and lie down. You've lost a fair amount of blood, there is a chance you could pass out." When Jou just stared at him and didn't move, Kaiba sighed and leaned over again. It was a bit of a stretch, but he managed to grasp the collar of Jou's jacket and tug on it. Joe frowned and resisted.
"Kaiba... If I lie down, I'll get blood all over the seat," he quietly pointed out.
Kaiba scowled at him. "The seat can be cleaned. I would rather have blood on the seat and you conscious when we arrive than have to carry you inside."
Jou hesitated for a moment more before reluctantly moving, although he balked at putting his head on Kaiba's thigh. The brunette kept tugging on Jou's collar though until he finally obeyed. He stared up at Kaiba's face.
"Don't get the wrong impression. I am *not* doing this so you'll be more comfortable. Like I said, I want you to still be conscious when we arrive." Kaiba scowled at Jou. "So wipe that smirk off your face."
Jou's smirk grew. "Ya know, Kaiba... I'm getting' a whole new view of ya right now."
Kaiba eyed the smirking blonde very warily. "Oh really."
"Yeah... I can see right up your nose." Jou's comment had Kaiba almost smiling before he realised it. He quickly schooled his features into their usual stern mask, but when he went to glare at the blonde teen, he found he needn't have bothered hiding his smile. Jou had his eyes closed.
Kaiba shook his head and stared out the window, pretending not to notice when his fingers decided to run through Jou's silky hair. Unfortunately, Jou was not as inclined to ignore it.
"Uh... Kaiba... Why are ya strokin' my hair?" The quiet question made Kaiba wince, but his hand continued to move. He glanced at Jou and was mildly relieved to see confusion and wariness, but no shock or anger, on his face.
"This is my car. If I wish to 'stroke' anything while being driven somewhere, I have every right to do so. Now lie still and save your energy for when we get back to the house." It wasn't until he heard himself speak the words that he realised just how badly he had phrased them. He glared at Jou as the blonde teen snickered.
"Hey Kaiba, as much as I'd like to take ya up on the offer, I think I'll be a bit too sore for a while yet. Besides, if that's what you're after... you're strokin' the wrong head." Jou's voice was sleepy and he'd closed his eyes again.
Kaiba stared at the blonde in shock. "I can't believe you said that. You and... I? Like... that? The pain must be affecting your sanity." As a comeback, it was horrible, but the truth was that Jou's words had created such a vivid image in his mind that he was finding it very hard to remember his own name, let alone make intelligent conversation.
Jou didn't reply. Kaiba frowned and peered at him closely, even going so far as to poke him. Jou merely made a sleepy sound and shifted slightly. "I don't believe it. He's fallen asleep."
For the rest of the ride home, Kaiba eyed the sleeping blonde thoughtfully, his hand gently stroking Jou's soft hair.
@-->-->----
By the time Doctor Himikuro left, Jou was sporting a heavy bandage that was wrapped around not only his upper arm, but his chest as well, ensuring that he couldn't move his arm and make the injury any worse. He was also several shades paler from the experience of having the wound sterilised and then dressed.
The doctor had given him an injection for the pain, but it had the side-effect of making him very sleepy. So sleepy that he didn't raise a single protest when Kaiba efficiently completed the task he had begun before the doctor's arrival. Then, he'd removed Jou's jacket and shirt so the doctor would be able to treat and bind the wound. Now, he stripped Jou down to his white cotton boxers before tucking him into bed as carefully as a mother tucking in her young child. The only thing Kaiba didn't do was give him a kiss goodnight.
Jou turned his head on the pillow to watch as Kaiba hung his clothes up in the closet. He frowned when he noticed the chair beside the bed. "That chair..." He looked around the room, still frowning. "Is this the same room I was in Saturday night?"
Kaiba smirked. "Yes. I'm considering renaming it J... the recovery room." He shot a glance at the blonde teen, hoping he hadn't noticed the small slip of his tongue. He'd very nearly said 'Jou's room'. Although... he wasn't sure *why* he had almost said that. After all, the other boy had only been there twice.
Jou winced. "Sorry, Kaiba. Didn't mean to put ya to all this trouble." He looked away. "If ya don't mind, can I take a quick nap before I go home? My dad's not gonna be too happy with me. The school's probably already called him. My brain's kinda fuzzy right now and if he gets me like this..." Jou sighed heavily, still looking away from Kaiba. "I don't wanna risk him findin' out about the money for Shizuka. I need to be thinkin' clearly when I face him."
Kaiba was somewhat surprised by Jou's admission of weakness. In fact, the blonde's entire attitude seemed to have undergone a rather dramatic change. Kaiba wasn't used to seeing Jou so... quiet and submissive. He studied him in silence for a second, noting the tension that had the blonde teen fisting the sheets as if he was in the throes of... something that Kaiba abruptly decided he really shouldn't be imagining Jou in the throes of.
As he headed for the doorway, hoping that Jou hadn't noticed the heightened colour in his face, Kaiba spoke briskly. "The doctor gave instructions that you were to rest for the remainder of the day. We'll discuss the matter more later."
He had left the room before it occurred to Jou to ask exactly what 'matter' they were going to be discussing.

Kaiba put down the phone and leaned back in his comfortable office chair. Although the call to the school had gone better than he had expected, he was still vaguely dissatisfied with the results.
He had not given the principal the full truth, of course, but he had told him enough that the man had been more than happy with the explanation. Kaiba had been assured that he would be marked 'absent due to business commitments', with no reference to Ming vases.
However, when Kaiba had turned the conversation around to Jou, things had not gone entirely to plan.
At first, the principal had refused to part with any information, stating that the privacy of the other students was not something that he could breach. Kaiba's response had been calm, concise and spoken in a voice so cold it was a wonder that icicles hadn't formed along the telephone line. The man had immediately guaranteed Kaiba that Jou would receive no punishment for the way he had left the school that day. His absence would be marked as 'medical reasons', Kaiba having already spoken to Doctor Himikuro about forwarding an appropriate certificate to the school.
Also, although an attempt had been made to contact Jou's father, he hadn't been home. So that was something else Jou wouldn't need to worry about.
Kaiba had accomplished everything he had set out to do. But he had also done something that he had *not* intended to do, and that was the cause of his feeling of dissatisfaction.
His icy words to the principal still echoed in his mind. "If Jou had not come after me this morning, I would be dead right now. I owe him my life."
He had not meant to admit it to anyone. He had barely admitted it to himself. Even though it was true.
He, Seto Kaiba, owed his life to Katsuya Jounouchi.
@-->-->----
It had all happened so fast.
One second, Kaiba had been staring at a small pistol aimed for his heart and Saiyukiro had begun to squeeze the trigger. Then the door had burst open, startling both Saiyukiro and Kaiba and causing them to instinctively turn in the direction of the noise. In that instant, Jou had rushed in and attempted to tackle Saiyukiro to the ground. The bounty hunter had fired off a shot in reaction to the attack, but he'd also been dodging Jou's tackle at the time, so his aim had been off. Still, the sudden pain of the bullet striking his left arm had knocked Jou to the ground.
But, that moment of distraction had been all the time that Kaiba had needed to disarm Saiyukiro and knock him out.
If Jou had not been there...
Kaiba frowned. There was something about that thought that didn't quite add up. "What in the world was Jou doing there, anyway?"
