Chapter Six
“Why do I have to come again?” Mokuba questioned as he looked at his brother.
“Because it’d be a good idea for you to meet Rose’s family too.” Kaiba answered calmly. “Besides, I’m not leaving you alone for two weeks.”
Mokuba groaned as he leaned his head against his seat, not really wanting to meet his brother’s girlfriend’s family. Sure, he liked Rose well enough and admitted that his brother was less uptight and stressed about stuff so they clearly were sleeping together. For a girl, she knew how to play videogames and kick ass. Hell, she even knew some good songs that actually helped him get into the mood to do schoolwork.
But what if her family was against everything that Rose seemed to promote? What if they were impossible for anybody to get along with? What then?
As if sensing the boy’s uneasiness, Rose smiled at him. “Don’t worry, Mokuba, they may be insane but they don’t have a stick shoved up their butts.” Rose assured him with a smile before looking thoughtful. “Actually, it’s a wonder why I don’t have a criminal record.”
“They were that lax in their parenting?” Kaiba questioned, raising an eyebrow. He had just thought that Rose acted so wild because she was trying to live the life she would have had without strict parents.
“Pretty much.” Rose sighed with a dreamy look of content. “Best thirteen years of my life.”
“Thirteen years?” Kaiba questioned.
Rose nodded slightly before answering, “Maybe I’ll tell you what happened later on. If I don’t, then either Adam or Tom will.”
Kaiba nodded slightly before looking out the window. Below, he could see the endless fields that reached on. He had never been to this part of America before, so he was grateful that Rose had taken it upon herself to make sure that they had everything they would need.
When they landed, they were finally able to get off of the plane. “Rose! Rose, over here!” They heard a voice call.
Rose smiled and ran ahead, wrapping her arms around a tall man’s neck. “Tom, hey! Long time no see, monkey butt.” Rose said with a laugh.
Kaiba and Mokuba quickly caught up, watching the two with varying degrees of interest. “Yeah, yeah. I hope you’re ready to catch hell from the she-demon cause she’s got a shit load of pictures.” Tom said with a laugh before noticing the brothers. “Ah, and she does keep her word and brings her boyfriend home.”
“Ha ha.” Rose said sarcastically. “Guys, this is one of my brothers, Tom. Monkey butt, this is Seto Kaiba and his brother Mokuba.”
Tom chuckled as he shook Kaiba’s hand, his brown eyes dancing with silent laughter. “Nice to finally meet you, Seto.” Tom said with a chuckle. “I hope my she-demon of a sister hasn’t been causing you too much trouble.”
“Not too much.” Kaiba admitted. “When she’s starting to feel impish, I have Mokuba play videogames with her.”
“She kicking your ass, kid?” Tom questioned as they left the airport.
“Occasionally.” Mokuba admitted. “How far away from here do you guys live?”
Tom clicked his tongue for a moment before answering, “About half an hour. The nearest town from the ranch is about fifteen miles away.”
“Fifteen miles? What if you’re hungry for something or want a soda?”
“Then we jump in the car and book it. Hell, even the kids drive until they get to the outskirts of town.” Tom answered as he pulled out of the parking lot. “After that, they walk.”
“Kids can drive?”
“Mokuba, kids here start learning usually when they’re about six or seven. I started learning when I was six.” Rose explained. “We’re mainly an agricultural community so it’s important kids know how to drive so they can take stuff out to the fields.”
Kaiba nodded slightly in understanding before asking, “Your ranch is fully operational, correct?”
“Horses, cattle, sheep, and chickens. Hell, we even got a goat.”
Rose looked at her brother for a moment before saying, “Vati* threatened to use the goat as target practice if someone ever got one. Someone take away his gun?”
“No, so I wouldn’t recommend any touchy-feely shit for the next couple of weeks unless you want your boyfriend in the hospital.” Tom answered. “The she-devil decided to buy a goat and let our dear mother know that goat’s milk is good for lactose intolerant people.”
“And she’s convinced that I sold my soul to the devil.” Rose commented lightly before rolling down the window.
Tom smiled as he shook his head slightly. “You seem to be awfully calm about the fact that your sister and I are seeing each other.” Kaiba said calmly. “Why?”
“Have you ever seen my sister angry, Seto? I don’t mean the ‘let me call one of my brothers so he can set up a hit’ angry. I mean the ‘that fucker is going to die a slow and painful death’ pissed.”
“No.”
“Good. Pray that you never do.” Tom said calmly. “From all the hell that the rest of the family is raising, someone’s temper is going to shoot through the roof. I don’t know if my sister is submissive to you in or out of bed, but very few people can tell her what to do and expect her to do it.”
Kaiba looked at Rose, seeing that she was staring out at the fields. Her eyes told him that this conversation had absolutely no interesting facts, that she knew full well what Tom had said and was going to say.
Gods, how many times before had he given the poor bastard that dared to date Rose this talk?
“Are you one of them?” Good, his voice was calm.
“I’m the voice of reason when her brain stops working and instinct takes over.”
Kaiba glanced over at his brother, trying to gage his reaction. To his surprise, Mokuba had fallen asleep. “Must be fun.” Kaiba commented lightly.
Tom chuckled before answering, “Lost a kidney trying to keep one bastard alive. Dumb shit decided to chase another skirt and Rose found out. Word of advice, don’t cheat on Rose.”
“Got it.”
“Don’t get rid of this one, Sis. I like him.”
Rose smiled faintly, her eyes flickering over to her brother. “I’m waiting for him to get tired of me.” Rose answered before looking at Kaiba with a teasing look. “Except somehow I don’t think that’ll happen.”
“You’re right. It won’t.” Kaiba confirmed.
“Damn it.”
He could hear the laughter in her voice, knowing that she wasn’t being serious. “Well, we’re here and it looks like the old man’s got the gun cleaned and ready.” Tom said with a chuckle.
Kaiba looked out the window, seeing a man in his late fifties, early sixties sitting on the porch with a shotgun sitting on his lap. “Are you still sure that you want to get involved with me?” Rose questioned.
“As long as I don’t get shot.”
“No promises.”
Kaiba was silent as he woke his brother up before following the two siblings out of the car. “He, Vati!” Rose called happily as she closed the car door. “Hey, Dad!”
The old man nodded slightly, the barest traces of a smile on his lips. “Aunt Rose is here!” Kaiba heard children shouting.
Laughter left Rose’s lips as she knelt down, pulling two dark haired children into her arms. “Ugh, you two are covered in mud!” Rose laughed as she pretended to fall backwards. “Ew!”
“We were playing with the piggies!” The little girl shouted happily.
“Well, I see two little piggies right now. Better not let your c-”
“Better not let whom see?” A female voice questioned.
Kaiba looked at a woman that had just came out of the house, seeing the cold hate in her dark eyes. He had seen people in the business world with eyes like that and suddenly understood why Rose was always so quick to get into people’s faces. “Nobody.” Rose said as she lightly pushed the kids off of her. “Adam made me swear to be civilized.”
“By tomorrow you’ll be running around half naked.”
“And by tonight I’ll be wishing I were drunk.” Rose verified before looking thoughtful and glancing at Kaiba. “Of course, by tonight I’ll be wishing that I was back in Domino City.”
“Why’s that?” The old man questioned with a soft look in his eyes.
Rose laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her head before answering, “Oh, no particular reason. I just didn’t expect Mamma to be willing to get my old room back in order and the guest room set up.”
“Mamma didn’t. I did.” A deep male voice said calmly.
The woman’s eyes flickered over to a young man, a smile spreading across her face. “Ah, quello era così dolce. Progettate sulla conservazione me dall'ottenere situato in due settimane prossime.” Rose said with a grin. “Ah, that was so sweet. Planning on keeping me from getting laid.”
“You know me too well. Now, start the introductions.”
Rose stuck her tongue out at the young man before saying, “Everybody, this is Seto Kaiba and his little brother, Mokuba. Guys, the old geezer is my father and the Italian speaking dork is my brother, Adam. The cow-”
“I thought I told you to be civilized.”
“Fine, geez. The bitch near the house is Adam’s wife, Adrianna.”
“The one that tried hooking you up with the one from her church.” Kaiba said, putting two and two together.
“Yeah, her.”
Kaiba smiled, making sure to remain polite. After all, he knew full well that he was being sized up by everybody other than Rose and Tom. “It’s a pleasure to meet you all.” Kaiba said with a small bow. “Rose appears to have a knack for making every day interesting.”
“You should have grown up with her.” Adam said with a small frown. “I promise you wouldn’t be saying that and that you’d be running in the opposite direction.”
Rose looked at her brother, her eyes pleading. “Aw, c’mon. Don’t scare the poor bastard off just yet.” Tom said with a laugh. “He’s survived working with Rose and now he’s trying to survive dating her. Let’s face it, any man that’s willing to put up with our lovely Rose and hasn’t eaten the barrel of a gun yet is worth keeping around.”
Adam kept frowning, his cool gray eyes focused clearly on the brown haired man. “So tell me, Kaiba, are you a dueling man?”
“Yes.”
“Have you dueled my sister yet?”
“I wasn’t aware that Rose knows how to duel.”
Adam smirked, his gray eyes flashing with entertainment. “Adam, please don’t.” Rose pleaded softly. “The past is the past, let it be.”
The man ignored his sister as he pushed away from the house, strutting around the brown haired CEO with something relatively close to dislike reflecting in his eyes. “Yeah, best in the state. Last guy she brought home burned her cards in a successful way to make her feel like shit. Never dueled again.” Adam said with a frown. “You can always tell a man by his cards. Our Rose was a spell caster type of woman. How about you?”
“I personally prefer dragons, but I will work with other cards.”
Before Adam could open his mouth, Rose grabbed him and shoved him against the side of the car. “Pick your fight when I’m not around.” Rose whispered harshly in his ear. “So help me, Adam, if you hurt him then I’ll ‘forget’ about the three-fold law.”
From the look on Adam’s face, Rose’s threat was quite serious. “You’d honestly put up with shit being shot back at you three times?” Adam questioned. “Just for him?”
“You told me to be civilized, and I’m asking the same from you. I won’t call your wife anything more than a bitch if you swear that you won’t beat the shit out of Seto.”
Adam looked at his sister calmly for a moment before asking, “How pissed is she getting, Tommy-boy?”
“Remember how pissed she got when someone spread that rumor that she was sleeping around and had gotten knocked up?”
“Yeah.”
“About that.”
Kaiba was silent as he watched the siblings, seeing that Rose was clearly the one in charge. If any of her brothers threatened to do something that she didn’t like, she was quick to put them back in their place.
Now he was wondering how on earth he got her into his bed. How could he have tamed such a wildcat when her own brothers were unable to. “Rose, go inside and introduce them to your mother,” commented the old man. “Tom and Adam, you two bring in the bags.”
“Ja, Vati*,” the three answered obediently.
Kaiba and Mokuba followed Rose inside, both noticing the glare that Rose and the dark haired woman gave each other. Clearly they had no feelings of endearment towards each other, but they weren’t going to say anything unless the other said something first. “Is she alive?” Mokuba questioned, spotting an old woman lying on the couch with a beer bottle sitting next to her.
Rose whimpered slightly before answering, “Yeah, she’s alive. Guys, that’s Mamma.”
Hesitating slightly, the young woman moved the beer bottle before sitting on the coffee table, slightly poking the old woman’s arm. “Mamma? Mamma, wake up.” Rose said carefully before sighing. “Mamma, we’re out of booze.”
The old woman woke up suddenly, reaching for the keys that sat next to Rose. “Give me some money and I’ll pick up some.” The old woman said, her voice slurred.
“No, Mamma, you’re not driving. I want you to meet somebody.”
“Yeah, okay.” The old woman said as she laid down and closed her eyes again. “Wake me up when it’s dinner.”
Rose rolled her eyes, pain reflecting clearly on her soft features. “Sorry about that guys, I hadn’t realized she was still drunk.” Rose said with an apologetic look. “Let me show you where you’ll be sleeping and then I’ll show you around the ranch.”
As they followed the woman upstairs, Kaiba couldn’t help but wonder if the old woman served as an example of why Rose would never drink more than a glass of wine a week. If so, then he was beginning to understand what Rose had meant by her childhood lasting only thirteen short years.
If he was given the chance, Kaiba wondered if he’d have the strength to help the clearly suffering woman overcome her own demons.
Somehow, he doubted that he did.
