Chapter Seven
Joey arrived at KaibaCorp Tower just shortly after ten-thirty.
As soon as the two siblings had returned from Chiba, Joey had reached for his cell phone and called Kaiba.
Now he was standing outside the imposing structure waiting to go inside. He sat on the stone steps in front of the building, flanked by two giant statues of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and fidgeted. The blond was anxious of the night to come. The brunette had mentioned dinner and Joey truly hoped that was all the stoic CEO was after. Considering the day he'd just had, that was all he was up for.
At that moment the front door of the office building opened, halting the blonds' train of thought. Standing, he nervously wiped his sweaty palms on the front of his jeans and turned to face Kaiba's Personal Assistant. After a simple greeting, Roland turned and led the blond inside.
Joey had only ever entered the grand structure on two previous occasions. It had been approximately three years ago, just shortly after Battle City when the gang had fought to help Kaiba regain control of the company. But he didn't remember everything being so big. Had the brunette redecorated? Whatever the case, Joey was stunned into silence as the towering bodyguard signed them in past security.
When that deed was done, both men made their way past the reception area. A solid stone wall, displaying the Kc logo in red, yellow and blue, separated the twenty foot ebony desk from the elevator banks and the Main Foyer beyond. Roland's thick heeled boots rang softly over the polished, grey granite floors while Joey's sneakers seemed intent on making an annoying squeaking sound ever so many feet.
The feature that impressed Joey the most, however, was almost every wall in sight was made from thick, light-blue tinted-glass. 'What was it with Kaiba and glass walls?' He mused quietly. Whatever the brunette's fascination, the blond had to admit it was a stunning attribute. No matter where one looked you could see outside. No doubt, an impressive sight by the light of day.
The ground floor of the office building rose thirty stories straight up before a person could even see the hint of a ceiling. On Joey's left was the biggest cafeteria he had ever seen and metal catwalks circumference the lobby at the tenth and twentieth levels.
Still trying to absorb all the fascinating details, Joey barely noticed when Roland escorted him past the Main Elevators towards the back of the building.
“Um…we ain't takin' de stairs, are we?” The blond asked as he pointed towards the polished chrome doors, a little perplexed.
“No, Mr. Wheeler.” The Personal Assistant answered with a chuckle. “I assure you we are not taking the stairs.”
“Bu’…” Before Joey had the chance to protest further the towering bodyguard turned and halted his journey.
“The Central Elevator Core only reaches as high as the ninety-third floor.” He explained. “The Chief Administrative Offices can only be accessed by an executive elevator from the ninety-third floor and up, or Mr. Kaiba's Private Lift.” The brunette added as he gestured to a pair of Security Guards standing behind him. “It's done for security purposes. It cuts down on the flow of traffic leading to the upper levels and no one without administrative access, or an escort, can reach the CEO of KaibaCorp.”
'Cool' Joey thought. Actually, when he did think about it, it was pretty ingenious. The blond nodded his understanding and both men continued their walk towards the back of the building.
“'Ey.” The blond spoke by way of greeting when they arrived.
“They won't talk to you.” Roland countered as he pressed the button to open the doors.
'Whatever' Joey shrugged but waved at the Security Guards anyways. As the Personal Assistant had stated, neither one acknowledged his presence.
A moment later the doors to the Private Lift opened with a soft hiss. Roland stepped inside and the blond followed. As the doors closed behind them, the towering bodyguard entered an access code into a keypad, then pushed the button to the hundred and first floor. Take-off was smooth and fast, as was the ascent and Joey watched the red numbers on the LCD display fly by quickly. Bored with the trivial pastime, his gaze traveled around the perimeter of the elevator taking in all the details.
The small space was oval in shape, half constructed out of polished chrome, the other half out of one massive sheet of glass. On the floor was a dark grey carpet, soft and blush under the rubber of Joey's shoes. As he turned around, the blond was rewarded with a generous view of the Domino City skyline. The metropolis at night was, definitely, a beautiful sight to behold. Off to his left, Joey could just make out the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. To his right; the city, itself. Both lit up for all the world to see.
Just as the blond was taking in the sights the elevator stopped its ascent and chrome doors opened to reveal an austerely decorated hallway.
Both men stepped out onto polished grey granite, bordered on each side by stark white walls. Potted-plants decorated the large space, one on each side of the lift, and framed pictures adorned the corridor. As Joey passed he saw a portrait of the indoor amusement park, several photos of KaibaLand, the KaibaCorp Duel Dome, The Blue-Eyes Jet Coaster, the Blue-Eyes Monorail and a rather flattering image of the Blue-Eyes White Jet in flight. 'Geez, how did Kaiba ever get that photograph?' The blond wondered as they made their way past the reception desk towards a large pair of solid, ebony doors.
When they arrived Roland knocked twice and waited patiently for his boss to admit them.
“Enter.” Came the muffed response.
The Personal Assistant immediately reached for the polished chrome doorknob, twisted the handle and stepped inside. “Mr. Wheeler to see you, Sir.” He announced, then moved aside and allowed Joey to enter.
“Good,” Kaiba acknowledged, not once looking up from his computer screen. “That will be all for this evening.”
“Yes, Mr. Kaiba.” Roland accepted the dismissal and closed the door behind him as he disappeared back down the hallway.
Now that Joey was there he wasn't quite sure what to do. He felt like an idiot standing by the entrance of the CEO's office but he refused to move forward without Kaiba's permission.
In the silence that followed, the blond ventured a tentative glance around the room, not surprised in the least to find that it was almost the size of his tiny apartment. The floor was covered in the same grey carpet he had encountered in the elevator. Three of the four walls were painted in a soft, cream-coloured hue while the fourth wall was another barrier of windows. Five large panes of tinted-glass separated the two young men from the city below.
Directly in front of him were a pair of black, leather armchairs and a black, leather sofa separated by a black 'n glass coffee table. Between that arrangement of furniture and the windows beyond was Kaiba, sitting behind an ornately carved, polished ebony desk. The fixture was at least six feet in length and three feet wide. Surprisingly, it was only topped with a phone and an oversized computer monitor.
Large, ebony shelves lined the right and left sides of the office while potted-plants adorned the back corners. And in front of one of those shelves a large, rectangular table held a miniature of an amusement park all laid out in meticulous detail.
Against his better judgment Joey felt compelled to approach the tiny model. When the blond arrived he was amazed by how incredibly small and thorough the design was. It was almost as if he could step right into the little park and start playing.
“KaibaLand New York.” A deep, rich baritone whispered in his right ear a few minutes later, causing the blond to jump a foot off the floor.
“Geez, Kaiba, wha’cha tryin' ta da, gimme a damned ‘ear'attack?” Joey exclaimed as his right hand reached up to cover his rapidly beating chest. An amused chuckle and a smirk were the only answer he received.
“What do you think?” The brunette asked as he gestured towards the miniature.
Joey turned back around and stared once again. “I t'ink it's grea'.” He replied as honey-coloured orbs took in all the details. While the blond was busy studying the tiny model the brunette slowly moved closer to Wheeler's side and put his arm around Joey’s waist.
“Are you hungry?” Kaiba asked by way of changing the subject.
The blonds’ stomach grumbled an affirmative and Seto smirked as he noticed the light blush that tinged the Wheeler’s cheeks.
“Follow me and I'll feed you.” The stoic CEO remarked as he began to cross the expanse of the executive office. Joey followed closely behind as he silently wondered where Kaiba was going to get food at a time like this. As they passed between the desk and the living room furniture Joey voiced his concerns aloud. Releasing another amused chuckle, the brunette simply stated, “Trust me, you'll like this.”
When he reached his destination Seto laid his right hand on the wall and pushed, activating the mechanized door to reveal the hidden stairwell beyond.
“Cawl!” The blond exclaimed as he gazed over Kaiba's shoulder.
“You haven't seen anything yet.” The young CEO replied as he crossed the threshold and down a few steps. Joey moved to follow and the door closed behind him.
As soon as it did, the blond found himself thrown against the wall, a pair of warm lips covering his. Joey's tired body responded immediately. It took no effort at all for the brunette to push his tongue into Wheeler's mouth and drink of its intoxicating flavour. An exhausted but approving moan rumbled in the back of the blonds' throat inviting the brunette to increase the pressure and kiss Joey senseless.
While tongues battled for dominance Seto pressed his body against the blonds' as wandering hands moved under his t-shirt, mapping out the rigid muscles underneath. Joey moaned again as he fisted his hands in the CEO's white silk shirt, drawing himself closer to the taller man. The blonds' unconditional surrender prompted Kaiba to slip his knee between his legs and grind their hips together.
Joey drew in a sharp breathe as he broke away from the kiss, lulling his head back and inviting the brunette to nip and suck at his neck. Kaiba's growl was low and dangerous as he was presented with the novel flesh. Making quick work of the new found territory Seto made his way to Joey's ear and tugged on the lobe. Hard teeth sank, gently, into soft skin as the blond reacted by grinding back against Kaiba's hips, eliciting a gasp of his own.
Passion driven, or not, fatigue took its toll on Joey's weary form and his body sagged against the brunette's for support.
“What's wrong?” Seto growled, noticing the shift in the blonds' weight.
“Sorry, Kaiba. 'M jus' beat, ya knaw.” He panted.
Sapphire-blue locked with honey-brown as the stoic CEO tried to gauge the truth of Wheeler's words. All that stared back at him was tired, worn-out eyes that showed, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the blond was using all his strength just to remain standing.
“Fine.” The brunette replied, reluctantly, as he dropped his arms to his side and backed away. He'd been waiting all day to get his hands on the captivating blond, counting the seconds until they could be together again. Apparently, Joey hadn't felt the same way. “Come. I said I was going to feed you.” He added as he turned to move further down the stairwell.
“Kaiba,” Joey protested, picking himself up off the wall and moving to follow. “P’ease don' be like dat.” He begged. “Jus' gimme some time an' I'll be good as new.”
When the ascetic businessman reached the landing he placed his hand on the doorknob and spoke over his shoulder, “It's fine, Wheeler, I assure you.”
Joey sighed and hoped that was the truth. Seto's expressionless mask had crept back into place and it was hard to decipher what emotions were hiding behind that cold façade of his.
As if the encounter in the stairwell had never occurred the stoic CEO had slipped back into his previously, teasing demeanour. “Are you ready for this?” He asked and without waiting for a reply pulled the door open and stepped inside. Wearily, Joey trailed along behind unsure of what to expect.
The sight that greeted him was beyond spectacular. As honey-brown orbs took in all the details of the expensively furnished apartment the blonds' jaw dropped and his eyes grew round as saucers. “'Oly shit!” He muttered. “Wha' da 'ell is dis place?”
“My Private Loft.” Seto replied with a satisfying smirk as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Geez, Kaiba.” Joey breathed as his gaze traveled around the perimeter of the room. “Dis is like, de mos’ amazin' t’ing I've eve' seen.”
“Thank you.” The CEO expressed gratefully. “I designed it myself.”
“Dat don' su’prise me.” The blond snorted as his initial shock began to wear off.
“And what's that suppose to mean?” The brunette bit out defensively as he glared at the young man standing beside him.
“Relax, Kaiba, I don' mean not’in' by it.” Joey soothed as he made his way towards the kitchen. “Alls I'm sayin' is dis 'ere, is exac’ly wha' I'd ‘pect from someone like ya.”
“Someone like me.” Seto repeated as he moved behind the counter.
“Yea’, ya knaw, dis place jus' screams 'Seto Kaiba'.” The blond answered as he took a seat on one of the bar stools.
Still somewhat offended, the brunette scowled as he opened the fridge and removed several platters of raw fish and rice and placed them on the counter. The condiments had already been set out into tiny dipping trays as well as the sauces and a set of chopstick, each. Soon to follow were two bowls of steaming brown rice and two tiny plates filled with Thai shrimp rolls. The last course to grace the simple fare were two small dishes filled with noodles, vegetables and meat. Joey watched silently as Seto moved to the countertop stove and, donning a pair of over mitts, grabbed the handle of a blue-glass saucepan. Carefully, he carried the pot over to the soup bowls and poured a generous amount of chicken broth into both dishes. When he was done, the brunette placed the saucepan back on the stove and tossed the oven mitts off to the side. He returned with two small cups and a container of warm Daiginjō-shu.
“Do you enjoy eating sashimi?” The CEO asked as he set the glasses down and poured the blond a generous amount.
“Yea’,” Joey replied as he took the decanter from the brunette and filled his cup before setting the bottle down between them. “My sis’er loves dis stuff.”
“Then you know of tradition and dining etiquette.” Seto simply stated as he raised his glass.
“Yea’.” The blond nodded, mimicking his dinner companions' actions before adding, “Ta da future.” He toasted before bringing the cup to his lips and taking a drink.
The stoic CEO merely raised an eyebrow before taking a sip of his own and setting the glass back down. “Very well,” the brunette commented as he cradled his soup dish in his left hand and picked up his chopsticks. “Enjoy.”
Again, Joey followed suit and both boys ate in silence for a few moments until Seto finally broke into conversation.
“What did you mean, earlier, when you said this place was exactly what you expected from someone like me?”
Not wanting to offend the young CEO the blond took a few moments to chew his noodles and arrange his thoughts. Finally he spoke. “Take ya're 'ouse fawr example.” He began as he placed his empty bowl on the counter and reached of a shrimp roll. “I was really su’prised ta see 'ow warm an' invitin' de place was.” Kaiba merely raised another eyebrow but let Joey continue without interruption. “I mean, it was nice, don' get me wron’ bu’ it jus' wasn't ya, ya knaw. Bu’ dis,” the blond gestured, food still in hand. “Its jus' de op’osite.”
“You mean, 'cold and impersonal'.” The brunette suggested, setting his own bowl on the counter before moving to the next course. He picked up a spring roll and dipped it in peanut sauce before bringing it to his lips and taking a bite.
“Naw,” the blond contradicted with a shake of his head. “I mean, 'modern an' ultra ‘igh-tech'.”
Kaiba harrumphed around a mouthful of food before swallowing and reaching for his glass. He took a sip of o-sake before placing the cup back down on the counter “The Mansion is a place for family.” The ascetic businessman explained dipping his roll once again. “This place, however, is mine.” He emphasized the last word while raising his breathtaking, blue eyes and spearing Joey with a steady look. “You should feel privileged, Wheeler.” Seto ground out. “I've never invited anyone in here until now. Not even Mokuba.” He finished as he dropped his gaze and returned to his meal.
For a few moments, the brunette's confession left Joey speechless. When his tired brain finally worked itself around the fact that the stoic CEO had just admitted to opening up and revealing a part of himself that no one had ever seen before, the blond did feel honoured. And suddenly warm and fuzzy inside. His heart swelled with the knowledge that Seto was actually reaching out to him and he felt light-headed and dizzy. He quickly grabbed his cup of o-sake and downed its contents in one swallow, then he reached for the decanter to pour himself another glass.
The brunette scowled and slapped Wheeler's hand away when he realized what the blond was doing. “Stupid Mutt. I thought you knew proper etiquette.” He scolded before he grabbed the bottle and poured the alcohol himself.
“I da,” Joey growled as he took another sip. “Ne’er tawk ya ta be de supersti’ious type, t’ough.”
“I'm not.” The CEO countered. “It's just good table manners.”
“Righ'.” Joey drawled as he set his cup back down.
Kaiba shot the blond another steely glance before reaching for his chopsticks and picking up a piece of Nigirizushi. He carefully laid a piece of ginger over the raw fish before picking up the entire mound and dipping it in the soy sauce, then the wasabi. Cupping his hand under the rice the brunette carefully raised the victuals and offered it to his dinner guest.
Honey-brown orbs locked with sapphire-blue as Joey leaned forward and accepted the treat. His mouth opened and slowly closed over the gifted food, taking the entire entree in one mouthful. As he chewed the blond watched flames of desire flare to life in those heated, blue depths. Unable to resist the urge Joey's tongue shot out and licked his lips in a sensual manner as he consumed the simple fare. “Delic’ous.” He teased as he forced back a chuckle when he saw his host visibly swallow and drop his gaze. The blond watched in amused silence as the brunette busied himself with another piece.
“Kaiba?” Joey ventured tentatively.
“Hn.” Came the distracted reply.
“I really da feel 'onoured.” He admitted, never taking his eyes off the handsome man standing before him.
The stoic CEO snorted as he reached for a piece of sashimi. Before he had the chance to dress the fish Joey reached across the counter and placed his index finger under Seto's chin. He raised the brunette's face till their gazes locked, then the blond slowly began to move forward.
Bracing himself on the countertop, Joey whispered in a soft voice, “I really da.” He reiterated before he gently pressed his mouth against Kaiba's firm lips.
The ascetic businessman practically purred as his eyes closed and he felt the blonds' tongue move past his physical and mental barriers, to slip deep inside. Appendages swirled with enticing sweetness as Joey took his time and savoured all that was Seto Kaiba. When he was finished the blond released his host and settled himself back on his seat. Joey watched, quietly, as the young CEO slowly opened his eyes to stare at him.
“Are we clear on dat?” Joey asked when he felt it was safe to talk. The brunette simply nodded his acceptance. “Good.” The blond gave a short nod of his own. “Den da me a favour,” he continued. “Change de subjec'.”
“Fine.” Kaiba conceded while both boys returned to dinner. “What did you do today?”
“Um…” Joey hesitated, doing his best not to appear nervous. “Find anot’er subjec'.”
“No.” The CEO persisted.
“Um…” The blond faltered, fidgeting slightly in his seat. The last thing he wanted to do was get into a long discussion with regards to his family. And he certainly had no desire to reveal the conversation he'd had with Serenity earlier that morning. “Dere ain't much ta tell.” Joey added, hoping that would satisfy the brunette so they could move on to bigger and better things.
“Really?” Kaiba countered. “You show up for dinner practically falling over on your feet, saying you've had a long day and there isn't much to tell.”
The blond visibly winced at Seto's accusation. He really didn't want to lie to the brunette but he still didn't fell comfortable discussing his family matters with someone he continued to view as an old rival.
The stoic CEO released an audible sigh when all Joey did was answer with a nonchalant shrug. It wasn't like Kaiba didn't know what had transpired since their phone conversation earlier, he was just testing the blond to see how far his companion was willing to trust him.
“Wadda ya wan' me ta say, Kaiba?”
“How about the truth.” The brunette refuted.
“Dat's rich comin' from ya.” Joey challenged.
“And what's that suppose to mean?” Seto questioned, his voice raising an octave as the blond threw his words back in his face.
“Jus' dat ya're one ta talk.” The blond cried as he finally let his temper get the best of him. “Ya gotta be de mos' tigh' lipped son o' a bi’ch dat I knaw w’en it comes ta ya, Mokuba an' ya're checkered pas’. Ya wanna get up close an' personal, Kaiba? Den w’y don' cha start spewin' off some o' ya're own family secrets, ‘uh?”
“That's private!” The brunette hollered, bracing himself on the countertop.
“Exac’ly!” Joey yelled back. “Wha' makes ya t’ink ya got de righ' ta knaw anyt’in' 'bout my life!”
“If you're not willing to share, then what the hell are we doing here?” Kaiba demanded, silently wondering when the two of them were ever going to make it past these childish games.
He watched in quiet annoyance while Joey scoffed and dropped his chopsticks. A second later the blond hung his head and crossed his arms defensively over his chest, effectively putting up a mental barrier and shutting the brunette out of his thoughts.
For a brief moment Kaiba felt like he'd been teleported back in time; back to Duelist Kingdom, back to Battle City were he, the Mutt and the rest of Geek Squad had clashed on a regular basis. The stress and aggravation of every single one of those encounters threatened to overwhelm the stoic CEO and Seto realized that the last thing he wanted to do was relive those trying memories.
It was time for them to grow up and the only way that was ever going to happen was if one of them gave in first. Refusing to admit defeat but realizing that if he didn't yield, just a little, then the two men were forever going to be locked together in mortal combat, Kaiba decided to play Devil's Advocate and make the first move.
“Fine.” He relented, relaxing his stance and crossing his own arms. The brunette adamantly refused to concede unconditional surrender. Wheeler had to meet him halfway or this was never going to work. “I'll make a deal with you.” He continued. “You answer my question and I'll answer one of yours. Does that sound fair?”
At the brunette's declaration Joey raised his chin to stare dumbfounded at the stoic CEO. Had he heard the man correctly? Was Kaiba really willing to divulge personal information about his past? Was the high and mighty billionaire of KaibaCorp really willing to let him in?
Slightly stunned from his host's previous statement the blond carefully uncrossed his arms and reached for his chopsticks. He fiddled with the sashimi while he tried to collect his thoughts. “I, u’…” Joey faltered when a piece of ginger slid off his fish and landed back on the platter. His hands were shaking so badly he was practically massacring the food as he tried, unsuccessfully, to prepare it.
Taking pity on the blonds' obvious distress, Seto gently laid a hand over Joey's to steady it. The CEO's warm touch caused his guest to lift honey-brown orbs to meet sapphire-blue. When Kaiba stared back he was shocked to see unreleased tears hovering at the corner of Wheeler's eyes.
“Joey?” Seto ventured in a whispered breath.
“I jus'…ya knaw…” The blond stuttered with uncertainty. “I jus' don' talk 'bout it.” He added with a shrug. As the brunette nodded his understanding a single tear slipped from Joey's eye and fell over his cheek.
In that moment, Kaiba had a very powerful urge to wrap the blond up in his strong embrace and never let him go. The intense wave of protectiveness that suddenly washed over the stoic CEO almost floored him and Kaiba knew in that moment that he would be hell bent on ever letting Wheeler go.
“Come,” Seto stated with calm authority. “I think we're done here.”
“Bu’…” Joey protested as he watched the brunette walk away from the counter. “All dis fawd…” he added as his gaze took in the leftovers.
“Roland will take care of it. You and I have other things to do.” Kaiba insisted as he waited for the blond to join him.
“I t’ough' ya sai’ naw one's allowed in 'ere?” Joey questioned as he moved around the kitchen and fell into step behind the brunette.
“My Personal Assistant doesn't count.” Seto disputed as he reached the spiral staircase and began to make his decent.
Suddenly intrigued with their new destination, Joey followed the CEO, never letting the brunette out of his sight.
When the two men reached the bottom of the staircase the blond sucked in another breath and exclaimed, “Geez, Kaiba, ya sure knaw 'ow ta live.” His admission was rewarded with another throaty chuckle as the CEO placed a warm hand on the small of his back and guided Joey across the room.
“Come, I'm going to help you relax while you tell me about your day.”
Seto felt the blond tense for the briefest of moments until they walked under the archway that led into the bathroom.
“Wha', naw doors?” Joey chided as he gazed around the surprisingly large space.
“Doesn't seem to be much point when the walls are made from glass.”
“Ya gawt me dere.” The blond admitted, reluctantly, as he watched Kaiba move towards a large, four man Jacuzzi.
The young CEO casually ascended the three steps that surrounded the hot tub and squatted down to reach the taps. A couple of twists later and the whirlpool bath was filling up with water, then he stood and turned to face the blond as he began to remove his shirt. Joey watched in quiet anticipation as Seto slowly revealed his flawless, alabaster chest.
“Candles, dim to one.” Came the softly worded command. Instantly the bathroom was bathed in a soft, incandescent glow. Candle-like fixtures, placed strategically around the room, immediately sprang to life and enveloped the two young men in an ethereal light. False flames danced, to and fro, and Joey swore he'd died and gone to heaven.
“'K, dat's it. I really wanna place like dis.” The blond confessed wholeheartedly.
A sensual, feline-like smile graced the young CEO's lips as he returned to his companion's side and Joey was suddenly reminded of a big cat stalking his prey. Casually, the brunette tossed his shirt over a velvet-covered bench only to move his hand back to the blonds' cheek in one fluid motion.
“Care to join me?” Seto drawled, passions' flames flaring to life once again as he trailed long, eloquent fingers down the side of Joey's face.
Now it was the blonds' turn to swallow the lump in his throat as honey-brown eyes locked with rich, sapphire-blue.
“P’ease.” He begged as he tried to fight a losing battle.
“Relax, Wheeler,” Kaiba purred. “I promise to behave.” 'For now.' He added silently and reached for the hem of Joey's t-shirt.
The blond raised his arms as Kaiba pulled the garment over his head and tossed it to the side. When that was done, Seto reached for the buckle of his belt.
Joey quickly folded his hands over the brunette's, stopping his incursion, wordlessly expressing to his companion that he would complete the job himself. Reluctantly, the CEO acquiesced and both men finished undressing of their own accord.
As soon as Kaiba was done he spun around and made his way back to the Jacuzzi. Once he reached the top of the steps the brunette waded into the tub and turned off the water, then he looked to the blond and waited for his guest to join him.
Joey wasn't too far behind. He'd always wanted to soak in a whirlpool bath and thanks to Kaiba, he was finally getting the chance. 'This is going to be sweet.' He thought as he slipped into the hot water and the brunette's equally warm embrace.
Without a word the stoic CEO spun Wheeler around until the blonds' back was facing him, then he lowered the two of them into the tub.
“Jets, cycle two.” The brunette commanded softly and Joey couldn't help but crack a smile as the water sprang to life and began their gentle massage.
“Man, da I eve' love ya're toys.” The blond laughed as he settled back against Kaiba's chest.
Seto released another chuckle as his hand moved to the side of the tub to grab a bottle of oil. “You should see my bathroom back at the Manor.” The brunette offered as he popped the cap and poured a generous amount into the palm of his hand.
“I'll bet it's some'in' else.”
“Hn.” Kaiba answered distractedly as he rubbed his hands together to warm the oil, then he calmly leaned Joey forward and began to rub his back. “Better?” He asked, pressing harder when he received a nod of approval. “Good. Now, tell me what happened.” The blonds' shoulders sagged under the CEO's tender ministrations and Joey released a pent-up sigh, allowing himself the luxury of defeat. He'd made a promise to cooperate and that's exactly what he was going to do. Taking a deep breath the blond closed his eyes and slowly released it, losing himself in the feel of Kaiba's skillful hands as they kneaded his soft flesh.
“Nawt sure if ya knaw, o' nawt, bu’ my parents divorced w’en I was nine.” Joey asked over his shoulder. When he received neither a denial nor a conformation the blond took another deep breath and continued.
“We was livin' in Yokohama at de time an' dad was workin' de docks. Anyway, long story short, dad los’ 'is jawb an' startin' drinkin'. Dat's w’en de figh’s started. Naw jawb, naw mone’, drinkin' all da time an' beatin' up on ma, it didn't take long 'fore she grabbed my baby sis’er an' moved ta Nagoya.” Joey's back slumped further under the heavy weight of distant memories. He'd never forget the day his mother had piled all their belongings into a car and drove away, Serenity's tear-streaked face glued to the back window and leaving the blond to face his fate alone.
“Me an' dad moved shortly afte' dat. 'E gawt a jawb on de docks 'ere in Domino.” With that admission Joey shrugged again. “Person’ly, I t’ink 'e jus' couldn' stan’ ta be reminded o' ma an' Sereni’y. Anyway, t’ings jus' wen' ta 'ell from dere.”
Not really interested in divulging any great detail with regards to his life on the streets Joey fell silent as he opened his eyes and stared at the water gently frothing around his legs. Deep in thought, the blond released a sonorous moan and arched his back as Kaiba choose that exact moment to press his thumbs against the blonds' spine and venture upwards. When the brunette reached Wheeler's neck his fingers started working themselves in tiny circles. Joey released another sigh as his head lulled forward and he continued his narration.
“I didn' see my baby sis’er again 'til Baddle City. Dat's w’en I brough’ 'er an' ma up ta Tokyo get Sereni’y's eyes done. Our firs’ meetin' was kinda strained bu’ we pu’ our differences aside, fawr Sereni’y's sake, an' moved on.” Kaiba nodded to himself as he listened, vaguely remembering the red-headed youth that had accompanied Wheeler during the tournament. He kept his thoughts to himself as the blond droned on. “Shortly af’er dat,” Joey continued, taking another deep breath. “De girls moved back ta Nagoya. I kinda fel’ used, ya knaw. Like de only reason ma came ou’ 'ere was 'cause she didn' 'ave de mone’ ta fix Sereni’y's eyes, 'erself. Bu’ I guess I didn' really care,” The blond added with another shrug. “As long as my sis’er coul’ see.” And Kaiba had to agree with Joey's last admission. Adults aside, all that matter was what was best for the children.
“Ma didn' speak ta me again 'til 'bout a year an a 'alf aga. Gawt a call one nigh' from my sis tellin' me dat ma was in de hospi’al. Sereni’y was frantic, ya knaw, 'cause she didn' knaw w’a' ta da. Sa Yug’ len’ me some mone’ an' I caugh’ a plane Wes’ ta see wha' was up. Doc tol’ me ma 'ad cancer.” Joey admitted, remembering the doctor's announcement like it had only just happened. “Wha' else coul’ I da? I couldn' jus' leave 'er dere an' my sis’er 'ad naw one ta take care o' 'er. Sa, Yug’ an' de guys ‘elped me bring de girls back 'ere an' I gawt ma pu up in dat cancer trea’ment cen’er up in Chiba.”
With that last statement the blond halted his story and sighed. He remembered those events as if they had happened yesterday. The entire trip had changed his life from bad to worse. What he thought would only be a weekend excursion ended up turning into a two week long nightmare. It had taken Joey three days to calm Serenity down and assure her everything was going to be alright. After that, he'd had to deal with the doctors, the hospital bills and his mother's boss. When that had been taken care of the blond had been informed of his mother's progressive illness, prompting Joey to extend his stay in order to handle the situation. He'd missed a month of school and lost two jobs over the entire ordeal.
In the quiet that followed the blond felt his companion shift behind him. The stoic CEO had reached for the bottle of oil again. He poured another generous amount onto his palms and returned the container to the side of the tub, then he refocused his attention on Joey. This time moving to massage his upper arms.
The blonds' body sagged under Kaiba's therapeutic caress, silently wishing he could get the brunette to do this for him every night. As his entire body relaxed and taut muscles gave way to warm, tender hands Joey decided it was time to finish his tale.
“She's been dere eve' since,” He resumed, his body tensing up as the stress of the day finally sank in and took hold. “She's been goin' t’rough all kinds o' tests an' stuff. An' de doc’ors 'ave been grea’, lettin' me run up a bill w’ile I made mont’ly payments. But recen’ly, dey wan’ed more an' I was forced ta pu’ a large sum o' mone’ down o' dey were gonna kick ma ou’ an' make me pay de 'ole t’ing.”
“Is that what you needed the money for?” The CEO finally asked.
“Well, dere was dat an' de fact dat I gotta pay fawr my sis’er ta ga ta boardin' school.” The blond added freely.
“There's more.” The brunette simply stated.
“Dere's always more, Kaiba.” Joey shot back. “Bu’ dat's nawt wha’ dis is 'bout. Ya wan’ed ta knaw 'bout my day an' 'm tellin' ya. Every Monday me an' my sis’er ga ou’ fawr breakfas'. She 'as dis liddle café she likes ta ga ta. Anyway, den I take 'er back ta sc’ool an' run o'er ta see da’. I take care o' de bills an' shit, clean de place up an' den 'ead 'ome fawr a couple o' 'ours. 'Round fawr o'clock, I pick Sereni’y back up from sc’ool an' we ca’ch de train ta Chiba w’ere we spen’ de nigh' visitin' ma. Bu’ tanigh' de doc tol’ me de trea’ments ain't workin'. 'Er cancer's spread everyw’ere an' she'll be lucky if she makes it at’oder two mont’s.”
When the brunette heard the catch in Joey's voice he dropped his hands and pulled the blond back against his chest. Silence filled the large space as the CEO gave his guest the chance to recollect his thoughts.
“Kaiba,” The blond began after a few minutes, breaking the hushed calm of the room. “Wha's it like ta lose ya're ma?”
The stoic CEO tensed at the innocent question as unwanted memories quickly flooded his vision and teleported him back in time. As the minutes passed and the stillness grew Joey began to wonder if the brunette was ever going to answer him.
“Kaiba?” The blond probed further.
“I…” Seto stuttered, unsure of how to respond. “I don't really recall.” He stated matter-of-factually.
“Dat's bullshi’.” The blond snorted, realizing for the first time that Seto had never intended to keep his end of the bargain.
Scowling, the ascetic businessman glared daggers at the back of Wheeler's skull before finally admitting in a hushed growl, “It's not that I don't remember, it's just that I was really young at the time.”
“Sa?”
“So,” Kaiba mocked. “I didn't really know what to feel.” He admitted rather reluctantly. When the blond shot him a dirty look over his shoulder the CEO rushed to defend his answer. “I was four years old, Wheeler, I didn't know what to think. All I remember is that one day my mother was there and the next, she wasn't. It's as simple as that.”
Joey relented and heaved a deep sigh, snuggling back against the brunette's firm, unyielding form.
“Mus' ta been 'ard fawr ya.”
“Yes, it was.” Seto confirmed, not really interested in talking about the matter but reminding himself that he'd promised to answer Joey's questions if the blond answered his. And his companion had done more than reveal information about his day. He'd given Kaiba a look into his past. The least he could do was return the favour, if somewhat unwillingly.
“Wha' da ya remember?” Joey asked, finding himself truly interested. If the brunette was going to give the blond some insight into his previous life, then Joey was going to take full advantage of the situation.
“I remember her saying good-bye to me,” The young CEO disclosed evenly, absently running his fingertips over the contours of the blonds' chest. His thumb caught and toyed with a dusty-pink nipple as he closed his eyes to relive that fateful day. “And I remember she made me promise to take care of Mokuba.”
“Did ya ‘ate 'im?” Joey ventured tentatively, afraid to ask such a personal question. He shuddered as Seto captured the hardened nub between fore-finger and thumb and applied pressure. Biting his lower lip to stifle a moan the blond tried to focus on the conversation at hand, without much success.
“At first.” Kaiba admitted sourly, refusing to elaborate further.
When the brunette remained silent Joey choose to settle on a different approach. He shifted his position and turned around to straddle Kaiba's lap. Reaching behind the stoic CEO for the bottle of oil the blond flipped the lid open to pour some of the greasy liquid into the palm of his hand, then he set the container off to the side and returned his attention to the handsome youth. Testing the oil's scent Joey rubbed his hands together to heat it up before laying them on Seto's pale flesh. Sapphire-blue locked with honey-brown as Kaiba watched the blond intently.
Never breaking eye contact Joey started caressing the tops of the brunette's shoulders. He gently kneaded the flawless skin before slowly traveling down his upper arms and back again. It didn't take long for the blond to notice the slight change in the CEO's breathing. Biting back a triumphant smile the blond leaned forward and whispered in Kaiba's ear.
“Tell me 'bout 'er.”
The brunette groaned as his head fell back to rest on the edge of the tub. Blue orbs closed and his body shuddered as Joey's warm breath washed over the side of his face.
“Tell me, Kaiba,” The blond probed. “I really wanna knaw.”
Clear-cut images of a breathtaking beauty danced behind closed lids and haunted his thoughts, calling forth unwelcome emotions and unfamiliar feelings. Although he'd been very young when his mother had died Seto's eidetic memory had burned her appearance into his mind with meticulous detail. There wasn't a thing about the woman that he couldn't remember and the brunette found himself recalling every moment.
“What do you what to know?” Kaiba rasped in a hoarse voice, his thoughts divided between unwanted memories and Joey's skilful hands.
“Anyt’in', every’in'.” The blond replied as he trailed tiny kisses over the contours of Seto's jaw. “Tell me wha' she lawked like.” He inquired further.
“I can't, Joey, please.” Seto begged as dark images from his past threatened to overpower and consume him. The brunette was finding it increasingly hard to determine if his laboured breathing was due to the blonds' soft lips or his losing battle to overwhelming emotions.
As the pleading sound of Kaiba's voice reached Joey's ears, the blond stopped his assault to look at his host. Was it his imagination or could he hear the brunette hovering on the edge of tears. When the ascetic businessman opened his eyes Joey's suspicions were confirmed. Sapphire-blue orbs were misted over with a thin sheen of water and the blond immediately felt contrite. He hadn't meant to cause the CEO pain.
“'M sorry, Kaiba. I didn' mean ta pry.” The blond apologized and leaned forward to seal his act of remorse with a kiss.
The brunette’s arms moved to encircle his companion as two pairs of warm lips met in a tender embrace. Soft skin danced enticingly over soft skin as Kaiba lost himself in the moment, never wanting it to end. He felt Wheeler's tongue slip smoothly inside as they deepened their kiss, both men drawing and feeding off their mutual consolation. It was as if Joey was comforting him and Seto accepted the heartfelt gesture without thought.
As they broke apart the blond moved to the side and started to nip and suck his way down the CEO's neck. He left a fiery trail in his wake as his right hand dropped below the waterline to encircle Kaiba's velvety length.
The brunette gasped when Joey's hand, still slick from the oil he'd poured on it earlier, easily slid up and down his shaft, effortlessly bring him to life. He felt the blonds' thumb glide gently over the tip of his erection only to press firmly into the slit, eliciting another breathless groan from the stoic CEO, before releasing him and moving back down his hardened length.
Long, eloquent fingers dug into the firm muscles of Joey's upper arms as Kaiba bucked his hips in wordless invitation. He wanted more, needed more he just didn't know how to ask for it.
Thankfully, he didn't have to. It was almost as if the blond could read his mind. Before the brunette could even form a coherent thought Joey centred himself over his host's lap and impaled himself on Seto's thick shaft, burying the CEO's erection deep inside.
The suddenness of Wheeler's actions had Kaiba throwing his head back and crying out in utter surprise, his hands dropped to Joey's hips as the brunette's body inadvertently jumped up to meet him. Seto quickly bent his knees while his feet sought and found purchase on the tub's smooth surface, giving him the leverage he needed to thrust back without hesitation.
Not a word was said between the two men as the blond braced himself against Kaiba's shoulders, granting himself the assistance he needed to ride the brunette with ease. Panting out his desire, Joey lifted his hips and began to move. Slowly at first but soon the two lovers had the water sloshing against the side of the Jacuzzi with the force of their exertions.
Lost in each other's dominant embrace, both men still held captive by the violent emotions they'd been forced to endure earlier, Kaiba and Joey found their release in no time at all. They reached their climax, simultaneously, and collapsed against each other with breathless disregard.
When the blonds' heaving chest had slowed to a gentle rhythm, Joey lifted his head and opened his eyes, gazing upon the brunette's serene features.
“Kaiba?” He whispered, finally breaking the tranquility that had enveloped the two lovers.
“Hn.” The stoic CEO replied as he unfurled sapphire-blue's to take in the beautiful sight before him.
“Take me ta bed.” He requested. “’M tired.”
Several hours later had Joey waking up in Seto's warm embrace.
The two men had eventually climbed out of the Jacuzzi and towelled off, only to fall exhausted on the silk covered monstrosity Kaiba called a bed. The blond had immediately fallen asleep under the watchful eyes of the stoic CEO and, as the brunette artfully arranged himself around his companion, Seto had managed to joined him in silent slumber.
Now they were awake, both boys enjoying the quiet atmosphere, the view of the city and the comfort of each other's arms.
While Joey's head rested, peacefully, against Kaiba's chest the blond listened to the sound of his even breathing as he gazed out the windows and into the night. At first Joey thought he would feel vulnerable and exposed with the lack of solid walls to surround him but, to his amazement, he realized that he only felt safe and secure and the blond silently wondered if that had anything to do with the brunette's dominant presence.
“What's on your mind?” Seto asked as his rich baritone broke the silence.
“Not’in'.” Joey muttered, lost in thought.
The stoic CEO snorted his disbelief but didn't venture forward. Too wrapped up in his own contemplations to really take notice.
Kaiba's mind was consumed by a million different reflections and every single one of them centred around the blond lying in his bed. He had long since conceded the fact that his continued interactions with Joey were more than just a passing fancy. He was, also, consciously aware of the irony that his heart should choose to accept and inevitably settle on the infuriating blond.
Their journey, to this point in time, had been a hardened and trying experience laced with bitter rivalry and Seto wondered if maybe he was drawn to the man because of it. His entire life had been a series of trials and tribulations that he'd faced without complaint and eventually overcome. And throughout those times he'd always been drawn to the select few who'd challenged and opposed him as if he needed the conflict just to feel alive.
His entire enmity with Yugi was founded on that very concept.
But Kaiba had never knowingly grouped Joey in that category. He'd never considered the blond to be a worthwhile adversary or an opponent at all, for that matter. The Mutt was just that, an animal, always following in the footsteps of others. A third-rate duelist, a runner-up and Seto had looked down on him for it. Sneered at his pathetic existence as something to be pitied and despised, then tossed aside.
Nonetheless, the past few weeks had uncovered many unforeseen revelation's were the blond was concerned. Wheeler was a lot stronger than he looked. From what the CEO had read earlier, Joey had lived a hardened life outside of the Geek Squad that not even they appeared to know about. He could hold his own against the world, had held his own and had managed to come out on top.
It had only been fate, and a little manipulation, that had offered Kaiba the chance at a wealthy lifestyle and the brunette silently wondered if the blond wouldn't have achieved the same success if only he'd been given the opportunity.
Joey was tenacious and resilient and more than capable of standing as an equal at Seto's side. But did the brunette want him there? And before his mind had the chance to conjure up such a question, his heart had an answer.
Now, his only problem was finding out if Wheeler wanted to be there or not.
What the stoic CEO didn't know was that Joey had already made his choice.
The blond had long since given up hope of ever finding anyone who could wrap him up in strength and security while helping him beat back the horrors of the world.
When his mother had taken Serenity and left him to his father's drunken wrath, Joey had been forced to stand alone on his own two feet or die an excruciatingly, painful death. Literally. If he wasn't fighting against the elder Wheeler's nightly assaults then he was learning how to protect himself against the harsh realities of the streets. Neither choice had been particularly appealing but Joey had chosen a life of crime over his father simply for the fact that he couldn't bring himself to retaliate against the old man. Mentally and physically abused, or not, the blond loved his father and that was all there was to it. That's why Joey had inevitably returned to him. And that's why he continued to look after the man, even now.
Then when the Gang had come into his life the blond had been offered a renewed sense of self and although everyone had helped support him and guide him down a better path, at times, Joey still felt like an outsider.
Tristan had the security and support of both his parents and an older sister while Yugi was surrounded by the unconditional love of his mother and his Grandpa. Tea, too, had the care of both her parents. And as an only child, she had her dreams handed to her on a silver platter.
Even after all they'd been through with the Spirit of the Millennium Puzzle, none of them really knew what it felt like to have the people they looked up to abandon them without a second glance. And none of them had ever been forced to fight or work their asses off just to stay alive.
But Kaiba knew exactly how the blond felt. He'd been there and then some. He had his own demons to battle and defeat and somehow, through it all, he'd managed to come out on top. Cold and distant and completely distrustful of anyone who dared approach him or his little brother but still a winner in his own right. And it wasn't like the brunette wasn't capable of the finer emotions. Joey had seen enough in the last few weeks to know that Kaiba could love just as fiercely as anyone else. You just had to prove yourself worthy of it.
And that's what Joey wanted to be. Worthy of Kaiba's affections. That's why, he realized with shocking clarity, he'd fought all those years to get the brunette's attention. And now that he had it, he was terrified he was going to lose it. Especially if he voiced his thoughts aloud. It would just be his luck that the second he admitted to falling head-over-heels in love with the stoic CEO, Kaiba would tuck tail and run.
Earlier that morning Joey had wondered if he could ever enter into a serious commitment with the brunette. Now, after the events of the evening, he had his answer. He could and would, if ever given the chance, and he would fight tooth and nail to keep it.
The blond was saved from further contemplation as Kaiba's rich baritone broke the silence, once again.
“What's got you so quiet, Wheeler?”
“Jus' t’inkin', dat's all.” Came the distant response.
Seto noted the detachment in Joey's voice but ventured forward anyway, his pride forcing him to keep his state of mind impersonal as he wasn't ready, just yet, to bare his soul to the blond.
“That's a new trick, even for you.” The brunette teased and immediately regretted his taunt in light of Joey's reaction.
Said blond growled and pushed himself away from the heartless CEO, instantly missing the warmth of his lithe form. He sat upright in bed and gave Kaiba his back as he ground out through clenched teeth, “Give de dog jokes a res’, will ya.”
“Joey, please,” Seto offered by way of an apology. “I was just trying to lighten the mood.”
“Yea’, well ya suck at it, 'k.” He tossed at his assailant, still thoroughly miffed by the animal-like reference.
“Joey…” Kaiba soothed as he sat forward to spoon the blond. “Sometimes my canine analogies aren't meant as an insult.” The brunette explained as he gently ran his hand over his lover's back.
Although Joey snorted his disbelief, curiosity got the better of him and he had to ask. “Den wha' are dey s'pose ta mean?” He tentatively inquired. Honey-brown eyes peeked out from under shaggy bangs to risk a cautious glance over his shoulder.
Doing his best to stifle a hearty laugh at the puppy-like reaction, the young CEO offered up an explanation. “Maybe it's my way of expressing my perception of you.”
“Perce’tion?” Joey questioned further, unsure of the meaning of the word.
“The ability to notice or discern things that escape the notice of most people.” Kaiba supplied the definition and Joey nodded his understanding.
When nothing more was said the brunette decided to elaborate. “Loyal, trustworthy and compassionate.”
Again, the blond nodded his acceptance but didn't say a word. He turned his gaze face-forward as Kaiba began to drop tiny kisses over his shoulder and up the back of his neck. Joey suppressed a shudder as he lost himself in thought and began to fidget with the edge of the sheet. The white silk felt soft and smooth between his rough fingers and Joey was reminded of just how different him and the CEO really were.
Although it was nice to hear Kaiba describe him in such a way, the blond had to remember the two of them were just as black and white as the bedding they were resting on. But his heart wouldn't accept the truth behind those thoughts without conformation from the brunette. He had to know how Seto really felt.
“Kaiba,” Joey finally risked aloud. “Can I ask ya a pers’nal ques’ion wit’ou’ ya gettin' ma’ at me?”
“Hn.” The brunette encouraged with half an ear, too distracted by his current priorities to pay much attention.
“Kaiba…” The blond growled. “Woul’ ya stop dat an' lis’en ta me.” He demanded impatiently.
“I am listening.” He purred before returning to his previous activities.
“Ya can be a real pain in de ass som’times, ya knaw dat.” Joey barked again, then sighed in defeat. Maybe he just wasn't meant to find out.
“Fine,” Seto conceded, forfeiting his entertainment and giving the blond his full attention. “What is it you want to know?”
“Are ya still willin' ta give me de trut’ 'bout any ques’ion I'd like ta ask?” Joey asked hopefully.
“Are you still willing to return the favour?” Kaiba countered. A simple nod had the brunette finishing his sentence with, “Then be my guest.”
“'Ave ya eve' t’ough' 'bout fallin' in love?” The blond inquired expectantly
“More often than you think.” Seto replied without hesitation. “Why?” He refuted, his tone laced with a hint of expectation.
“'Cause I t'ink I…”
Before Joey had the chance to finish that statement the two men were interrupted by a bright light suddenly appearing at the north end of the room. Both boys looked up to see Kaiba's Personal Assistant stepping off his Private Lift.
Thoroughly annoyed with Roland's horrible sense of timing the stoic CEO bit out through clenched teeth, “You better have a good reason for disturbing me.” He threatened in a deadly hiss.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Kaiba, I do.” The towering bodyguard responded in a professional but mournful tone.
“Well, spit it out!” Seto snapped, growing progressively more impatient with every passing second.
Roland took a deep breath and answered with the trained ease of someone who was use to delivering bad news on a daily basis. “I have just received a call from Mr. Fuku Ebisu, your Projects Manager in charge of New York Operations…” The brunette began firmly.
“And?” Kaiba prompted with a growl, his patience wearing thin.
“He called to inform you there's been an accident at one of the construction sites at the park.” The Personal Assistant added. “Master Mokuba's been severely injured in a fall. He's not expected to live.”
