G is for Ghost
Spin-off from “C is for Call.”
“You need to come home.”
“My sister’s graduating from college. I ain’t missing that. And I am home.”“Joey, there’s been an accident.”Joey had refused to listen to Yami and now it was too late. Seto Kaiba’s state had worsened and Mokuba had been forced to make a very difficult decision. And now Kaiba was dead.Upon hearing the news, Joey had hung up the phone and curled up in his bed. He had cried and cried until he was left choking for air. He refused to go to the funeral, no matter how much his friends tried to convince him. He had refused to even accept a Skype call from Mokuba. It would hurt to see such a familiar face so soon./……/
It was a couple of weeks later when weird things started happening. It all started after Joey received a package from Mokuba. He had let it sit in his room for a week before his curiosity finally won out. He opened it to reveal a very shocking gift.
It was a card locket, similar to what the Kaiba brothers wore. Except that wasn’t the shocking part. It was what he found when he opened the locket. To his complete and utter shock, Joey had found all three of Kaiba’s Blue Eyes White Dragon cards inside the locket. Please take care of these for me, Joey. You’re the only one I can trust to take care of them. ~MokubaHesitantly, Joey put the locket around his neck and hid it under his shirt. In his opinion, he owed Mokuba for not talking to him and to Kaiba for not being there. He often found himself rubbing at it through his shirt. It reminded him of the pain he felt each and every day./……/
After a month had passed, things got weirder. It seemed like the heat didn’t work in his apartment anymore. In fact, it was so cold that he could see his breath when he released a stream of air. Yet when Serenity visited, she didn’t feel an ounce of cold or see her breath.
“It’s all in your head, Joey,” she had giggled.Joey thought that might be acceptable, except he also had the feeling of someone watching him. It had spooked him enough to wear pajamas to bed. Oh, and his bed!Every night, he would lie down and close his eyes. Then the strangeness would happen. He felt like his blanket was tugged on or someone was shaking him. One time he bolted out of bed, eyes wide open in shock and gasping for breath. That was when he swore he had heard someone utter the word mutt. This was another one of those nights. Joey stumbled into the bathroom and splashed water in his face. Joey was beginning to think he needed to be admitted to a psych ward. He blinked through the droplets of water running down his face. He gasped. In the mirror’s reflection, standing behind him, was Seto Kaiba. Joey whipped around in surprise, only to find nothing there. Joey mouthed a stream of curses as he stomped down the hall and to the kitchen. By God, he was going to get some sleep tonight. Even if he had knock himself out with alcohol./……/
It was two months after the man he loved had died. It was the final breaking point for Joey’s sanity. In the middle of the day, he was lying on the couch, half-asleep. He had taken a bad tumble down the stairs at work after swearing he heard the familiar voice hiss his last name in his ear. Right now he lay on his back with his hand playing with the card locket resting on his chest.
Falling more on the sleep side of his half-state, Joey’s hand stilled over the locket. His head jerked to the side in his sleep when a cold sensation ran down his cheek. Had he been more alert, he would have bet money on it being a hand. The hand-like sensation ghosted down his face and neck to his locket. It stayed only a second before pulling the blanket down off the couch.“Get some sleep, pup.”If anyone were to look in on Joey, they would see a blanket moving itself to cover over the exhausted young man./……/
After waking up, Joey felt a little better. He walked into the kitchen to get a drink. Joey frowned when he walked in. There was an open copy of the New York Times sitting on his kitchen table. He turned away with the shake of his head.
“I don’t get the New York Times,” Joey mumbled. “Where da Hell did dat come from?”“From the stand down the street.”With his back to the table, Joey stopped dead in the middle of the kitchen. He closed his eyes and quietly murmured aloud to himself.“I’m hearing things again. It’s all in your imagination. There’s no paper. No voice.”Snort. “From the looks of the finance pages, this isn’t much of a paper.”Joey dropped his chin to his chest and clapped his hands together in front of him. He chanted to himself as he slowly turned around.“Please be a nightmare. Please be a nightmare. Please. Be. A. Nightmare.”Afraid of what he may see, Joey slowly opened his eyes. He was beyond overjoyed to no newspaper or person at the table. He rolled his head back in relief with a loud sigh of relief.“I need a vacation,” he mumbled.“Domino’s nice this time of year,” a voice whispered very close to his ear.Joey let out an unmanly squeak as he flung himself across the room against the wall. Standing in the center of his kitchen was the late Seto Kaiba. The man was just as Joey remembered with his trademark trench coat on and his arms crossed over his chest.“No, no, no, NO, NO,” Joey said.Seto glared. “Really, Wheeler? I finally get you to see me and that’s the greeting I get?”Seto’s words filtered through his mind and it made Joey snap up to attention. He glared at the other man.“Ya mean ta tell me these last few months, it’s been you?! Making my apt colder than the damn tundra and creepin’ me the fuck out?!” Joey shouted.Seto smirked.“A means to an end, mutt. Right now, you’re the only one who can see me and I want your ass back in Domino. Now.”Joey threw his hands up and stomped out of the kitchen. He breezed down the hallway and into his bedroom.“You’re dead! Why the Hell am I the only one who can see you?”Seto appeared by his bed. The former teenage CEO kept glaring.“If I had any idea why, do you really think I’d be here?” he shot back.Joey rolled his eyes and fell onto his bed with a flop. He threw his arms over his eyes while letting out a long stream of curses. Seto rolled his eyes. The mutt was being so overdramatic.“Get your ass up, dog. You need to be on the next plane back to Domino.”Without lifting his head, Joey shook his head.“I ain’t going anywhere. Least of all, Domino.”Seto frowned. Since when was the mutt so adamant about going back to his homeland? Sure, his sister was here, but the girl had graduated from college and moved out. What could be tethering him to this place?“I’m not leaving until you get your mangy mutt tail home,” Seto told him.Getting tired of hearing the brunette’s voice, Joey threw himself to his feet. He grabbed up his jacket and darted around the ghost. Ignoring him was one thing, but he sure as Hell wasn’t going through him. Who knows what would happen?!“Wheeler!”Joey snatched up his keys, plopped his hat on his head, and slammed the door behind him. He jogged down the stairs with a destination in mind. A destination that would hopefully prevent the ghost from being near him./……/
“I’m so lost, Father.”
The priest smiled softly at Joey. They were out walking in the church’s gardens. Joey had been relieved to not see or hear Kaiba, upon setting foot on church grounds.“Is there a reason why you could be seeing this man’s ghost?” the priest asked.Joey shrugged.“We never got along. I can’t imagine why he would be haunting me. Maybe a final nail in the coffin kind of deal.” Pause. “Sorry, Father.”Father Jeffries chuckled. “It’s all right, Joey.”Joey listened as the priest gave him some advice. He was surprised by what the holy man suggested.“You say, this ghost has asked you to return to your hometown? And this is where he had died?”Joey nodded. “But I don’t know why. I kinda ran out before he could tell me why.”The priest recommended that Joey make amends; return to his homeland. Joey winced. He had been afraid of that.“Do you mind if I make a call, Father?” Joey asked. The priest nodded and walked away to give him privacy. Joey pulled out his cell phone and thumbed through his contacts before landing on one that made him sad. Not caring what time it could be, Joey pressed Call and brought his shaky hand up to his ear.“…Hello?”Joey smiled sadly.“Hey, Mokie.”There was a noticeable pause on the other line. “…Joey! Good morning! Oh, I was hoping you’d call.”Joey bit his bottom lip. The kid – no; young man – sounded beyond happy to hear him. He should have called. Or Skyped. Or even texted.“Hey, yeah, I’m sorry about that. I guess I couldn’t handle things. You know? After…everything that happened,” Joey told him.“…I know, Joey. I understand. I really miss him, too.” Pause. “When are you coming back, Joey?”Joey bit through his lip so hard it tore through skin and a metallic taste filled his mouth.“That’s why I called, Mo. I’m…um…thinking of visiting. See the guys, spend time with you…you know?”He could practically hear Mokuba smiling on the other line.“I’d really like that, Joey.”/……/
When Joey returned to his apartment, he didn’t see Kaiba anywhere and the apartment didn’t feel ice cold. He was able to fix himself a microwave dinner, although he didn’t eat much of it. He wandered around the apartment cleaning up a few things before retiring to his room. Joey disappeared into the bathroom where he took a quick hot shower. When done, he toweled off and pulled his pajamas on.
He was brushing his teeth and lifting his head when he caught sight of the ghost in his bathroom mirror. Joey choked on his mouthful and coughed it up into the sink. He grabbed a glass, filled it with water, and gargled with it before spitting it into the sink. Slamming his toothbrush down on the counter, he glared at the ghost via the mirror.“And here I thought I’d need alcohol to see you again,” Joey spat out, sarcastically.Seto smirked. “Perhaps this will convince you I’m not in your imagination.”Joey jerked forward in fright when the ghost shot forward and enclosed him in his arms. Joey expected to go right through the ghost, but Seto was solid. Joey shook his head back and forth, fighting to get out of the ghost’s arms.“I’m not letting go until you get some sense into that blonde head of yours.”Joey yelped as he felt the brunette’s grip tighten around him, further pinning his arms down.“Let go! Let go of me!” Joey shouted.Seto swiftly came down to the floor with his legs crossed and the blonde in his lap. The ghost knew his embrace was probably hurting the poor boy, but he didn’t give a damn. He needed him to go back. However, the blonde was making too much noise. If one of his neighbors were to come barging in and saw him yelling at nothing, then they could have him carted off to the psych ward. That would be counterproductive to what the ghost wanted. Releasing one arm from around the blonde, Seto slapped a cold hand over his mouth. Now forced into silence, Joey’s thrashing slowed until he sagged in the ghost’s arms. Glancing down at the blonde, Seto could see that the younger male had thoroughly exhausted himself. He supposed it had been a really trying day for him. He wanted him to go back to Domino before it was too late, but he wouldn’t be able to force him there with his usual attitude.Joey let out a small whimper when the CEO turned him on his side to the ghost. He shuddered when a hand he felt was supposed to be comforting, ran up and down his back. It wasn’t so much as comforting as it was frightening.“Go to sleep, mutt. You took a bad fall, either,” Seto murmured in his ear.“T’was yer fault,” Joey mumbled.Joey curled into the CEO’s arms with an even bigger shiver. Most of it was from the ghost’s overpowering cold temperature, but part of it was because of whose arms he was in. The man he still had a crush on was dead and holding him in what he could classify as a lover’s embrace. Despite the chill, Joey rested his sleepy head against Seto’s shoulder and closed his eyes.Seto stood up with ease while holding the blonde in his arms. The blonde had lost a little weight since he had started haunting the twenty-five year old, but that shouldn’t have made him so light. Seto walked into the bedroom and laid the blonde down on his bed. Seto pulled the blanket halfway up his back.He would speak with the blonde when he woke up next./……/
“Why do you want me to go back?”
Joey had woken up around one and was unable to go back to sleep. He was currently sitting at the kitchen table, hunched over a class of hot tea that had gone cold. Seto stood leaning against the far wall with his arms crossed over his chest. He had been willing to wait until morning to speak with the blonde; it had been Wheeler who had openly called his name.“I have my reasons, Wheeler,” was all he told him.Joey shot him a lethal glare over his mug.“Not good enough. I ain’t tearin’ my life apart, listening to a ghost that has nothing better to do than to haunt me for the rest of my life,” Joey spat at him.Seto hiked an eyebrow in disinterest. Dead or alive, he was used to the mutt’s barking by now.“All you need to know, Wheeler, is that it’s early October and you need to be in Domino.” Pause. “You owe Mokuba.”Joey turned his head away to stare at nothing in particular. The brunette’s words stung. They hurt worse than Joey cared to admit.“You think I didn’t know? That everyone else attended my funeral while you stayed holed up in your apartment and refused to speak to my brother? That’s low, mutt. Even for you. Even if you don’t give a damn about me and loathe as I am to admit it, Mokuba needed you.” Pause. “And you weren’t there.”Joey stood up from the table and took his half-empty cup to the sink where he proceeded to dump the rest of the contents down the sink.“Guess it’s a good thing I’m going, then,” Joey mumbled, turning around to show the ghost his back as he exited the kitchen.Seto dropped his arms in confusion before trailing after the blonde. He observed Joey trudge into his room where he proceeded to pack his bag.“What are you talking about, mutt?” Seto demanded.“Called Mokie earlier and told ‘em I’d come for our visit. Got the private jet sitting the airport, ready for whenever. All I gotta do is give the pilot a call,” Joey mumbled.Seto smirked as he watched the blonde pack.“Good.”/……/
Seto frowned as the blonde got up for the eighth time in the last hour. It was a thirteen hour flight from New York to Domino and they were only in the third hour. So far, the blonde had paced, had flipped through television channels, and gone to the bathroom. And now, he was pacing in the back again.
With the roll of his eyes, Seto pushed himself out of his seat and went to the back of the plane. He didn’t bother closing the back doorway. The only people on board, other than the two young men, were the pilot, co-pilot, and a stewardess that stayed up front. Seto was surprised to find the blonde pacing from one side to the other, mumbling to himself.“…fine…fine…ten hours…fine…nothing…”“Wheeler.”Joey stopped mumbling to himself but he kept twisting around and pacing. Fed up with the blonde’s erratic behavior, Seto snagged his arm on his next pass and jerked him to a halt. Joey turned panicked eyes to stare up at him. He had never seen the other man so nervous.“Wheeler, Mokuba’s not going to hate you. You’ll be fine,” Seto told him.Joey shook his head before jerking his arm out of the ghost’s grip. He went back to pacing frantically.“You don’t understand, Kaiba. I don’t like flying. I hate flying. Thirteen hours? Not good. Not good at all.”Wheeler’s ramblings didn’t make sense. He had seen Wheeler ride on planes before and he was just fine. On the next pass, he snagged the blonde’s arm by the elbow again.“Wheeler! What’s wrong with you? It’s only a plane,” Seto told him in a stern voice. This time, when Joey tried to jerk his arm free, Seto held tight. The blonde dropped his head down and looked away from him while mumbling. Seto then learned why the younger male was so nervous. After moving to the States, Joey had been on a plane that had to do an emergency crash landing; airplanes made him very uneasy ever since and his doctor had him take strong medicine to get through a flight. Seto had been about to demand why the blonde hadn’t taken the medicine when Joey stuttered that his prescription had been out and he hadn’t gotten a refill before coming to the airport.Seto knew this wasn’t his fault; the damn mutt should be taking better care of himself. Only he couldn’t help but feel a small twinge where his heart should be. He had been very pushy in getting his way (he was, after all, used to getting things his way). Now, though, he could clearly see the exhaustion in the blonde’s foggy gaze. The blonde would be no good if he was beyond exhausted. He knew Mokuba would be waiting to tackle the poor blonde, upon his arrival.Using his grip on the blonde’s elbow, Seto pulled him along to the room at the back of the plane. Joey followed without complaint. He was actually a little relieved to see a bed back here. Seto shoved him in the direction of it as he went about closing the shades over the windows. After closing the last one, Seto turned around to look at Joey.Joey was curled up under the covers with his eyelids lowered, but he was still wide awake. Seto thought about what had worked earlier. For whatever strange reason, the blonde had fallen asleep when he’d been holding him. Wheeler didn’t know, but he had enjoyed holding him; he was, after all, the source of his crush over the last few years.
Joey shivered as he felt a cold presence lie down behind him. He realized what the ghost was doing when two cold arms wrapped around him and pulled him back against an equally cold body. Thankfully, the brunette stayed above the covers, allowing for Joey to take comfort in the covers. He was confused as to the ghost’s motives for…cuddling? Yeah, that’s what he would call it.
At this point, though, Joey wasn’t going to question it. His heart ached in extreme pain, but he allowed himself this one bit of comfort. He pulled his arms up to nestle further into Seto’s arms, closed his eyes and drifted off back to sleep. Once he was sure Joey was out like a light, Seto laid down on his back and rolled Joey over to curl him further over his body.He put an arm around his waist and another came up to his hair. Joey shivered, but showed no signs of waking. With no one else around, Seto found himself speaking freely.“Did you know that coma patients can hear and feel everything around them? Yami was standing right here when he called you. Did you also know I was aware when Mokuba had to make the decision? I couldn’t comfort him or even say goodbye.“I even attended my own funeral. Granted, no one could see or hear me, but it was nice to know who I would have been firing. I was surprised to find that I couldn’t move on. I’ve been refusing to admit it for quite some time, but it was the only thing I could think of.”Seto’s hand had started weaving through Joey’s soft blonde hair while he spoke. The twenty-five year old shivered, but surprised Seto by nuzzling more into his chest. He chuckled.“I like you, mutt. I never said it out loud and no one, not even Mokuba, knew. Although, I think he suspected something. Despite your loud mouth and poor dueling skills, I found myself coming to actually like you. Just before the accident, I was going to take some vacation time and come to you. I had your address from Mokuba and your work schedule from Serenity.”Joey made a noise like he was going to wake and Seto paused to watch him. Joey let out a sigh and stayed asleep. The ghost remained there, watching over the sleeping blonde./……/
After landing in Domino, Joey wasn’t surprised to see Mokuba there to greet him at the airport. He was, however, surprised by the first thing the twenty-year-old ask.
“…What did you just say?” Joey asked.Mokuba shook his head with a small smile.“I asked if Seto was with you,” Mokuba replied.Joey’s eyebrows disappeared up into his hair. He stared at Mokuba with his mouth open like a big mouth bass.“I thought I was the only that could see the bastard,” Joey commented, without even thinking about his words.Mokuba’s eyes went wide.“You can see him?”Joey threw his hands up in surrender.“Okay, kid. I’m a little sleep deprived here. Back up and explain to me what you meant by your question.”Mokuba proceeded to explain that Seto had been able to get Mokuba’s attention by typing on his computer and moving other things around the room. Mokuba wasn’t able to see or hear him but Seto could communicate using the computer. It had actually been Mokuba that had suggested Seto try to visit Joey; it was Mokuba’s strong belief that Seto needed to resolve issues before moving on.Everything moved by in a blur as Joey and Mokuba left the airport. Joey settled into a guest room at Kaiba Mansion and into a routine. He visited Kaiba Corp with Mokuba during the day, lending a helping hand when and where he could. In the evenings, he traded off spending time with his friends and with Mokuba. He also spent some alone time on the occasional evening and weekends. During Joey’s time with his friends and alone, Seto remained at the mansion. That suited Joey just fine. Especially considering his alone time was always spent at one place. Kaiba’s grave at the cemetery. He would just go there, sit quietly, and stare at the grave. On most visits, he cried. They were all doing well until it was a few days before Halloween and Joey decided enough was enough. He was going home. Except it seemed Kaiba had no intentions of letting him leave.“Why don’t you get it through your thick, transparent skull? I didn’t want to come back! You made me come here!” Joey yelled.Joey stood on one end of the guest room while Seto stood several feet away from him glaring. He had been expecting an outburst like this for some time now.“WHY? All of your friends are here and your sister has moved on! What’s stopped you from coming back?” Seto shouted back.“I DIDN’T COME BACK BECAUSE I’M IN PAIN!” Joey erupted. The ghost blinked. Pain? What kind of pain? Did the mutt have a terminal illness none of them knew about? Was that the reason for the recent weight loss? The States were known for their advances in the medical field.Joey turned away clutching his stomach as he fell onto a cushioned window seat. He brought his free hand up to clutch the side of his head. He saw his breath come out in the air, in which he turned his head away. His head was pounding, like a jackhammer was drilling into it.“Go away. Please go away. It hurts.”A cold hand softly came down on top of his head. He flinched away and a single tear fell down his cheek. It only got half way down his cheek when another cold hand grasped his chin and a thumb swiped it away. Joey’s body was wracked with horrible tremors.Seto put his cool arm around Joey and pulled him to his feet. Joey held his stomach as Seto walked him over to the bed. He pulled back the comforter and pushed Joey to lie down. Joey curled up with his arm still around his middle as the ghost pulled the blanket up over him. He watched over the blonde while he softly cried himself to sleep. He sat down beside the slumbering blonde, thinking over any symptoms he may have missed since his first appearance. He found his gaze falling on the card locket around Joey’s neck. Seto knew Mokuba had given it him and that Joey had probably been wearing all this time, out of guilt. Reaching behind the blonde’s neck, Seto unlatched the necklace and took it away to lay it on the bedside table. His curiosity got the better of him, however, before he could set it down. Giving a quick glance to Joey, Seto opened the locket to peer inside. His eyes went wide at what he saw.Blue Eyes. All three. His brother had sent his locket with his three Blue Eyes White Dragons. His thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing of a phone. By the time he found the source of the buzz (Joey’s cell phone), the sound had stopped.Seto picked it up and looked over it, only to find a voicemail. He easily cracked the password, accessed the voicemail and listened to the voicemail.“Good morning, Joey. This is Dr. Hanson. I’m just calling to check on you. I’m sorry I’ve been out of town and we’ve missed a few of our sessions. Please let me know when you’d like to come in next. I know it’s been a couple of months now. And I enjoy our talks. You’ve opened up a lot over the last year and I’m pleased with the progress you’ve made. Give me a call when you get a chance.” BEEP. End of new messages.Lowering the phone, Seto narrowed his gaze over at the blonde. Given the message the doctor had left, Seto was left with the conclusion that he was a psychiatrist or other similar type of doctor. It sounded like Wheeler had started seeing the doctor around the time he had died. As Seto moved to put the phone back, he found an envelope sticking out of the blonde’s bag.In for a penny, in for a pound, Seto thought. He put the phone back and pulled out the envelope. He was shocked to find the envelope addressed to Seto. Curiosity got the better of him as he carefully flipped open the insert. He pulled out what appeared to be a handwritten letter. It was dated a few weeks after his death.Dear Seto,It isn’t by choice that I find myself writing this. Dr. Hanson encouraged me to write this as a way of getting closure. I think it’s a load of crock, but apparently it’s supposed to do some emotional and mental healing. Whatever.I guess I should start with apologizing. I’m sorry I got in your face a lot. I’m sorry for calling you moneybags, jerk-face and God only knows what else. I’m sorry I got on your nerves and got in you trouble at school. I’m sorry I…Seto frowned. The last sentence had obviously been written several times and then erased. By now, it was unreadable. Seto’s gaze flickered down to the next part of the letter. He walked over and sat down on the window perch while he read.I miss you. I miss you *smudge* than you could ever know. It *smudge* to think that I wasn’t *smudge*. I would do anything just to hear you call me mutt again. I promise I won’t even yell at you. Hell, I’d probably hug you. *smudge* *smudge*I guess I ain’t done making my apologies yet. I got one more. I’m sorry for…Seto couldn’t hold back the gasp he uttered. He shot up to his feet and was by Joey’s bedside in a flash. He pulled up the blonde’s jacket sleeves and turned his wrists over. To his shock, in a small crisscross pattern, there was an old, light-colored cut across the main vein.Wheeler…Joey had attempted suicide. Seto was beginning to understand the letter now. After one of Mokuba’s kidnappings, the psychiatrist had encouraged Mokuba to write everything out in a letter. It had helped him to get out his feelings about how he had felt being kidnapped.Joey’s letter and the locket holding his three dragons…oh gods, Wheeler felt the same! And he knew if he were to just let himself pass on at midnight on Halloween Night, that he would be seeing the blonde shortly after. He had bringing closure for himself and Mokuba while twisting the knife already buried deep in Joey’s heart.Seto leaned down to press a freezing cold kiss to the top of Joey’s head.“I’m going to fix this.”Seto disappeared into the night./……/
Yami was sitting behind the counter on the game shop’s computer when weird things started happening. The keyboard suddenly moved across the table from in front of him and the mouse followed it. The program he had opened was closed, not saved, and a word document was opened. Yami raised an eyebrow.
“I was doing something important, Kaiba,” Yami said out loud.He watched as the keyboard keys started clicking on their own.Shut it. I need your help.Yami chuckled.“What could I possibly do to help the great ghost of Seto Kaiba?” he teased. You can start by dropping the sarcasm. It involves Wheeler.Yami glared at where he assumed Kaiba was standing.“Even when you’re dead, you’re still determined to have it out at him. Why can’t you leave Joey alone?” Yami asked. You’re wrong and this isn’t the time. I only have a few days left before I pass on. And Wheeler will end up following me the day after.Yami frowned. The keyboard typed out a short explanation of what was going on. Yami couldn’t help but lean onto the counter laughing hard.“You’re telling me *ha ha* that you and Joey *ha HA* care for *hehehe* each other. *sniff* And you only *ha ha ha* figured it out *HA* after you died!”Unfortunately for Yami, Seto chose to grab up a book from behind him and whack him on the back of the head with it. Yami shot up with a yell, holding the back of his head where it had hit.“Kaiba!”The keys were up and moving again. If you’re done cackling like a hyena, I require your assistance. If there is any way I can come back from this, you would know.Yami sighed. Kaiba was right. He had a book upstairs that might have just the trick in it.“Give me a minute.”Yami jogged upstairs, only to return a few minutes with a thick book in hand. He carefully placed it down on the table. He flipped through it until he reached the page he was looking for.“Okay, Kaiba. There is something here. It’s very specific and a bit complicated, but if done correctly…” Yami smiled. “…you should come back to life.”Yami smile slipped into a smirk.“And be able to fuck Joey all you want.”The next key strokes involved a surprising amount of obscenities.“Do you intend to kiss my best friend with that mouth?!” Yami exclaimed./……/
Over the next few days, Seto had made himself scarce. It had scared Joey into thinking his words had finally chased the ghost off. The only comfort he got was when he laid down at night he felt a cold presence near him until he drifted off. It was almost like Kaiba was letting him know he was still there.
That night, as the hour was nearing midnight, Seto appeared at Joey’s bedside. The blonde was in a deep sleep which worked for Seto was about to do. He carefully peeled back the blankets to pool at Joey’s waist. He was grateful that the younger male had opted out on wearing a shirt to bed that night.Seto put a small pot of red paint on the bedside table and picked up a tiny brush. Dipping the brush into the paint, Seto turned back to his crush with it raised over his back. He began drawing intricate symbols and patterns onto the pale back. He had memorized every part of what he had to draw; there was no room for error. To his relief, Joey didn’t stir while the brush stroked over his sensitive skin. Seto made sure to keep an eye on the time. When he was done, he lay the brush down. Bringing his hand up to his mouth, Seto bit down on the bottom of the palm until he felt the skin split open. He ran the palm of his hand down over the markings, surprisingly not smearing the paint. When he pulled his hand back, Seto watched the paint glow before slowly disappearing. He grabbed the paint and brush so he could hide them. When he came back to the bedroom, the clock out in the hall was chiming on the stroke of midnight. On the stroke of twelve, Seto felt a tingle run through his body.He couldn’t be sure if Yami’s spell work had actually worked. He knew how to find out without waking the blonde. Seto left out the open guest door and closed the door quietly behind him. The entire staff had the night off so he didn’t have to worry about anyone seeing him. Roland knew of his ghostly appearance and would not freak out from wherever he lurked.Seto came upon his brother’s room and immediately went inside. He was surprised to find his brother still awake and working at his computer. He smirked.“You know that too many hours in front of that thing will wind up with you in glasses,” Seto said out loud.Mokuba shrugged. “You would have had them before me.”Seto’s eyebrows rose while Mokuba froze with his hands hovering over the keyboard. He slowly turned around in his wheeled chair. His eyes got wide and his mouth opened a little when his eyes landed on his clearly visible brother. Without saying a word, Mokuba shot out of his chair, across the room, and into the arms of his older brother.Seto held his brother for a long time as he held on to him tightly. Once he managed to calm himself down, Mokuba stepped back, but stayed in the circle of his brother’s arms.“Does this mean the spell Yami found worked? You’ve come back?” Mokuba asked.Seto smiled. “The spell isn’t complete yet, Mokie. There’s a few more things I have to do first.”Mokuba nearly wept when he heard his brother use his childhood nickname.“What do you need to do?” Mokuba asked, curiously. He was surprised to see his brother’s cheeks turn a dusty red. He tilted his head to the side.“Big brother?”Seto shook his head.“It’s a need to know basis and you don’t need to know, Mokie. Just know that if it does work, I’ll be back and…Wheeler will be sticking around for a while.”Mokuba couldn’t help it. He nearly lifted his brother off his feet with the next bone-crushing hug./……/
After calming his brother down and making plans for that Halloween day, Seto went back to the guest room. He sat up against the headboard beside the sleeping duelist, running a hand through his hair. It warmed his heart to actually feel the softness of the golden mane and see that his touch didn’t make the boy shiver from the cold. In fact, his touch made Joey roll over and shift closer to him until his head was resting on his thigh.
For the first time in his life, Seto prayed. He prayed that this would all work out. His prayer may have seemed selfish, but he prayed for his life so that Joey may live. As much as he didn’t want to be separated from him, Seto had no desire to see his crush at the pearly gates. Then again, he had no guarantee that, in death, he and Joey would see each other again. So this has to work, he vowed silently. As morning neared, Seto left the room with Joey’s alarm clock set and a message sitting next to it. At eight o’clock, Joey jerked awake at the blaring fire alarm he called an alarm clock. He flung it off into parts unknown before flopping onto his back.“Why the Hell did I set that?” Joey murmured out loud.It was then that he spotted a paper out of the corner of his eye. He reached over and picked it up. He flicked it open.Wheeler,Pick up the alarm clock and set it back on the table. Get dressed and come downstairs for breakfast.
Joey groaned. Even without the signature, he knew who had written it. Joey threw off the covers and did as asked. He refused to accept the note as orders.Joey decided to forgo a shirt while pulling on some black jeans and a pair of socks. He picked up his card locket from the dresser and hung it back around his neck. He trudged downstairs while still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Joey’s feet carried him down the stairs, through the entrance hall, and into the kitchen. He found a nice, simple breakfast sitting at the kitchen island. He spotted the fridge door open and a familiar tuff of brown hair just sticking over the top. Joey plopped down on a bar stool with a murmured, “Thank you.” Seto stood back up with a pitcher of orange juice. He walked over and poured Joey a cup before pushing it to him.“If I tell you something, do you swear you won’t freak out?” Seto asked, returning the pitcher to the fridge.Joey shrugged as he chewed on a piece of toast.“I’m talkin’ to a ghost that’s been hauntin’ me for a few months now. There’s very little that’ll surprise me nowadays,” Joey answered.Seto turned around with a teasing smile on his face as he approached the sitting blonde.“You go ahead and think that, pup. I’m not dead. At least not today.”Joey wasn’t sure what shocked him more. That Kaiba had called him a pup or that he touched the side of his face with his face or that said touch didn’t make him shiver. Joey stared in shock at the small smirk before shifting his gaze to the hand on his cheek.“You’re not cold. All this time ya been near me or touchin’ me, it’s been cold,” Joey murmured.Seto chuckled. “I just told you, pup. For today, I’m alive.”Joey reacted as Seto had predicted. He jerked back as if electrocuted, knocking the stool down as he backed himself into a corner. He shook his head violently.“No, no, no. I’m…I’m leaving. It hurts enough. No.”Seto swooped in on him, despite the erratic mumblings. Joey cried out as Seto yanked him into his arms and held him tightly. Joey jerked and swore, but Seto refused to release him. Suddenly, Joey stopped altogether and thumped his forehead down on Seto’s shoulder, thus hiding his face. For a minute, Seto thought the blonde puppy had passed out in his arms.Joey gave a full-body tremor that in turn shook Seto’s body. When he began to feel moisture seep through his shirt, Seto realized that his puppy was crying.“Today is Halloween, pup; the only day I could do this. There are a few things I haven’t talked to you about yet. I will let you leave tomorrow if that is what you wish. All I ask is you spend today with me. Just me,” Seto murmured in a low voice.Joey gave a loud sniff before turning his head to rest his cheek on the wet shirt. He stared up at Seto with a sad look on his face.“Why me?” Joey asked.“Because I don’t want you to leave here with any regrets.”Joey found he couldn’t say anything to that. After calming down and washing his face at the sink, Joey sat back down to eat some breakfast. Seto sat down beside him with a cup of coffee. After breakfast, Seto urged Joey to return upstairs and dress to go out.Over the course of the day, the two men spent their time walking through a fair downtown, listening to a violin duet in the park, and eating some lunch. It felt weird for Joey as no one seemed to recognize Seto; Kaiba later revealed that only those who knew about him being a ghost could see him for who he really was.In the early evening, after a light dinner, the two were sitting on the couch watching a movie. It was only halfway through the movie when Seto felt Joey turn his face to rest it against his arm. Seto paused the movie and lowered his head.“Puppy?”Joey stayed silent. He had also asked earlier, around lunch, why Seto called him that. Seto’s only explanation was that he didn’t see a mutt anymore, only a golden pup with bright brown eyes.Joey opened his eyes and lifted his head to stare up at the brunette.“Please. Just make the pain go away. I can’t take anymore, Seto,” Joey said, his eyes staring sadly up at him.Seto couldn’t stop the shiver. His name should not sound that good coming from Joey. But it did and it stirred something in him.Seto couldn’t stop himself from rolling over Joey with one knee on the couch between Joey’s legs. He took Joey’s head in one hand and brought his mouth down to cover his. A spark shot through both of them when their lips connected. Joey groaned and threw his arms around his neck, locking him into place. A sharp nip to his bottom lip made him gasp, allowing the young CEO to invade his mouth.Joey laid back against the couch back and allowed Seto to invade his space. Seto’s knee pressed against his member, causing Joey to whimper into his mouth. Seto smirked against his mouth. He pulled his knee back slightly, only to replace it with his hand.Joey broke the kiss by throwing his head back with a loud gasp. With his eyes closed, Joey felt Seto lower his head to lick at one of his nipples while deftly undoing his jeans. When a heavy hand reached into his jeans to grasp his erect member through his boxers, Joey’s whole body trembled. Seto licked and sucked on the small pebble until it was throbbing with pleasure.I can’t believe this is happening. Kaiba couldn’t possibly feel the same, Joey thought.Seto leaned further up on his puppy and pulled his head forward to rest against him. Joey leaned his forehead against Seto and shook while gasping for breath as the hand sped up on his member. He whimpered and bit his lip. It was Seto whispering in his ear that was his final undoing.“Come for me, puppy.”Joey’s forehead pressed hard against his chest and a low whine came out as he released. The warm hand massaged him through his boxers as he rode out his orgasm. Seto was glad the blonde couldn’t see his smirk. Him causing the blonde to release by his hand closed out the first part to the spell; three more to go.Seto dragged his head up to lightly nip at the blonde’s neck. Joey leaned his head back with a groan when he sucked on a piece of the skin. With his hand still in his former rival’s pants, Seto could feel Joey quickly recovering from his recent release. He pulled his hand out to rest his hand on the jeans-clad thigh which he rubbed firmly. Joey arched up into his hand with a loud gasp. After leaving a sizeable mark on the blonde duelist’s neck, Seto made his way back up to his ear. He nipped at it playfully before whispering to the blonde. His words made Joey shiver in a good way.“I’m going to make you feel good, puppy. My golden pup. I’ll take your pain away.”Joey found himself nodding his head. Even if it was only for the one night, Joey would take whatever Seto wanted to give. However, that didn’t stop him from gasping when Seto tugged his jeans and boxers off. Joey shivered as the cold hit his member and he unknowingly dug his fingers into Seto’s hair.“Shit!”Joey bolted up in his seat, but Seto’s hands on his hips kept him from going far. Joey’s curse had to become a result of Seto lowering his head and taking the still wet member in his mouth. The hot, wet cavern clamped over his member, causing it to throb harder than before. Joey whined and murmured as a tongue licked all over his member. He felt a hot hand slide under his thigh to cup his balls. The other hand slid across his stomach so an arm was keeping him from thrusting up. A hum around his member sent vibrations through his sensitive body. He tightened his grip on the brunette head as it bobbed up and down on his penis.Gods! If he’d known the brunette would have done this, Joey would have jumped the ghost himself right at the breakfast table. Joey bit his bottom lip and stared down at the dark-colored eyes that stared back up at him. The brunette gave him a small warning with a quick wink before he deep-throated the cock.Joey let out another screech and came hard. Seto swallowed it all up while simultaneously squeezing the firm testicles in his hand. When the liquid stopped flowing down his throat, Seto pulled off the member with a pop. He slid up the blonde’s body to give him a small, bold kiss. Despite the bitter taste to the brunette’s mouth, Joey opened his to accept the taste. When he pulled his head back, Seto whispered, “Let’s go upstairs and get cleaned up, hmm?”Joey couldn’t agree more. He allowed Seto to stand before taking the brunette’s hand to help him up. Not caring about his discarded jeans and boxers, Joey slid his hand into Seto’s and followed him upstairs. The third part of the spell was completed in the shower. Seto first cleaned off his puppy and was pleased when the blonde returned the favor. He made Joey come for a third time without any direct contact on his cock. He had slipped fingers into him, stretching him and striking his prostate repeatedly. The most pleasing sign had been seeing the marks on Joey’s back reappear and glow before receding back into his skin.Seto had kissed the back of his neck and whispered sweet words in his ear. He rubbed his middle finger gently over the sensitive gland until Joey whimpered in mild protest. After toweling off, they then moved to the bed where Seto finally made love to his puppy. It felt better than heaven when he finally slid into the warm heat. He had tried to make their time last, but the connection was too much for both of themThey both came simultaneously, moaning out each other’s names. Joey whispered something to him before exhaustion finally set in and he fell asleep. Seto smiled before leaning down to kiss Joey.“I love you, too, Joey.”Seto lifted his head when he heard the clock in the hall, chiming for midnight. Seto held his breath.…9…10…11………12/……/
At 3:00AM, on November 1, Seto still had his arms securely wrapped around his puppy. Seto smiled as he pressed a soft kiss to Joey’s cheek. His hand drifted down to gently rub circles over the blonde’s stomach. He could almost feel the little life that was beginning to grow there. The thought of witnessing his blonde puppy grow swollen with his child made his groin stir.
Seto knew Joey would probably freak out about everything come morning, but he knew deep down that the blonde would adjust. Mokuba would be overjoyed. He was going to get his brother back, have a new brother, and be an uncle all in one go.He looked forward to every smack Joey was sure to give him.Author's Note: I so did not mean for this chapter to be so long.
