WARNING: SETO / RYOU LIME! ANZU BASHING AT END!
Dawn Of A New Era
Jewel and Jacks held onto the building as the wicked wind whipped around them. Chairs from the nearby Bel’s Bistro were thrown across the concrete. Confused passers-by gripped onto nearby objects to prevent being thrown down the road. Jewel and Jacks held onto the iron bars of a ladder as they struggled against the wind to walk down the alley to the street. Down the road, they saw people standing on the sidewalk without effort. They stopped and watched as flower pots, chairs, and other objects were scattered by the wind.
“This is incredible!” Jacks exclaimed. “What the hell is going on?”
Jewel quickly put her arm down to prevent her dress from flying upwards. “I don’t know, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.”
Jacks looked towards the Game Shop where the Thief King had gone. The wind grew stronger, smashing one of the Game Shop’s windows with a chair. Broken glass shattered as the window’s shutters ripped from their nails and began to crash against the walls of the building. Shingles from the roof flew into the air.
One by one, the letters from the Game Shop broke from the building. The “G” flew across the street and crashed into a window of Otogi’s old headquarters. The “A” and “M” fell onto the ground. “E” was swallowed by a spinning vortex hovering above the Game Shop.
“The Game Shop is being ripped apart, Jacks! Bakura’s inside there! We have to warn him!”
Jacks gripped onto the Bistro’s iron railing. “It seems to be concentrated on the Game Shop! No other buildings are being ripped apart!”
Jewel watched in horror as the roof was ripped apart by the winds. Thick boards flew through the air, swallowed up by clouds above, and thrown carelessly to the ground. “We have to help him!”
Jacks grabbed her arm. “It’s too dangerous!”
Jewel felt her chest tighten as a section of the roof ripped off and another section cave in. “Bakura!” she called in horror.
The building shuddered under the force of the wind and the weight of the collapsing roof. Jewel stepped out of the alley, but could not stand against the wind. Jacks grabbed her wrist before she could be carried down the block. “Jewel! You can’t help him!”
Jewel held onto the side of the building as the Game Shop crumbled. The second floor collapsed, the concrete walls tumbled, and bricks covered the pile of stone and wood. The wind stopped as abruptly as it started as the Game Shop crumbled into nothing more than a pile of broken wood, glass, concrete, and brick.
Jewel ran to the building, her heart beating wildly. “Bakura! Bakura, can you hear me? Say something!”
People gathered around the ruins, looking curiously at the only building destroyed by the mysterious wind vortex.
Jewel circled around the pile of debris and hoped to see signs of life buried in the rubble. “Bakura.....” Police car and ambulance sirens echoed down the block as she felt a tear creep down her cheek.
The blond lurked in the shadows, pleased at his work.
*****************
Seto sat at his piano, staring at the ivory keys. Aria watched him sadly as she held the baby against her chest. Seto’s fingers brushed against the keys lightly.
“Seto, I’m.....I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing to be sorry for, Aria. It was my own.....weakness that brought us to this point. I fought so hard against it. But, it seems that my fight was a failure.” Seto lowered his head. “Damn you, Gozuboro.”
“Who?”
“My adopted father.” Seto took a deep breath. “I’ll continue to support our daughter, Aria. I’m sorry that Umi turned his back on you.”
Aria sniffled as she approached Seto. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. I know he won’t hurt the boys, yet.......they’re my children. I can only imagine what they will think of me,” she added sadly.
“I can send someone to look for him and bring him back,” Seto offered.
“I don’t know. Maybe he just needs a little time. I just....I feel terrible hurting him.”
Seto stood up from the piano bench and walked over to Aria. He placed his hands on her shoulders. “Lani will not want for anything, Aria. I’ll send someone to bring him back.”
“I’m not sure if I want to put my boys through that. It would frighten them if they saw armed men come and grab them out of their beds.”
“They know Jay and Karl, don’t they? If I send someone they know, they will be less frightened.”
Aria sniffled and wiped her eye. “They’ve already been through so much already. I don’t know if I want to make the situation worse.”
Seto looked down at the baby girl in Aria’s arms. She was the heir to the Kaiba Corporation. The baby looked up at her father with large brown eyes and wavy brown hair. Seeing his baby sent his heart falling in his chest. Joey......I’m sorry. I fought hard. Every day I struggled against it, but it was too much. Now Aria lost the person she loved. I lost my Joey. We’re both alone. I look at our baby and see how much I lost because of her. She was born.......because of a mistake. It’s not her crime. It’s mine.
“I’m sorry about Joey, Seto. From what I know about your past, you have always been there for Uncle Joey. I hope he sees that and comes home to you.”
Seto narrowed his eyes. “I’ve done everything I could to help him battle his demons. The bottle has always been his weakness. He’s probably sitting in some alley guzzling down a bottle of Jack. He’ll come stumbling in here like a drunken fool. It certainly wouldn’t have been the first time.”
“Mom told me about that.”
“I’ve done everything I could for him. If he wants to throw his life away, fine.” Seto’s voice grew cold as he released Aria from his grip. “I won’t stop him. My only hope is Kendall finds him before the fucking press does. That’s all I need is a scandal. If news about Lani is leaked, KaibaCorp may not recover.”
Aria sighed. “I’ve messed up everything for you.”
“It wasn’t only you, Aria. If I had not let my weakness control me, we would not be in this situation. I was weak. Well, no more. Life was much less complicated in high school. My own interests were before anyone. I dedicated my life to building KaibaCorp into an international powerhouse. Now look at it.” Seto turned his back on Aria. “Everything I have worked so hard to build can crumble around me. Years of work. Years of countless nights sitting awake in my office expanding my company until three in the morning and doing my homework until six. And all because of........that.” Seto said as he looked over his shoulder at Kailani with a death glare
Aria looked down at the baby sadly. “She couldn’t help how she was conceived. It’s not her fault. She’s still your daughter.”
“If word ever gets out about this...”
“Why would I tell anyone about her?”
“She looks just like me! How can someone not see that?”
Aria shrugged. “What do you want me to do? Put her in an orphanage? I don’t think I can do that. It’s not her fault that we gave into our memories.”
“An orphanage?” Seto asked as he turned to her.
Aria looked down at the baby. “Seto, how can we live with ourselves if we do that? I know mom would rather take her than allow us to put her in an orphanage.”
“Good luck explaining how two white-haired men made a baby girl with brown hair.”
“They both have brown eyes. And nobody knows mom’s secret.”
Seto sighed. “Someone will still question her parentage.”
“Do you really want me to give her away, Seto? I’m her mom. You’re her father. We need to do what is best for her.”
Seto crossed his arms against his chest. “While protecting KaibaCorp’s reputation.”
“Is KaibaCorp more important than your daughter?”
“My BUSINESS has been built on blood, sweat, and tears, Aria...”
Aria narrowed her eyes. “What about your own blood? She is your blood, Seto. Isn’t that more important than anything else? My father was not Aten’s father, but he still took care of my brother! He protected him and took care of him as if he were his own son! Lani is your daughter! The tests prove that! Marik was not my dad, but he still corrected me and kissed my bumps and bruises. Blood is not necessarily those with whom you share genes.”
“This is different, Aria! Your father will not go bankrupt and lose a multi-billion....BILLION...dollar company that he has built from nothing!”
“So your business is more important than your own daughter?”
“I provide for her. I send you money for anything she needs.”
Aria’s lip curled in anger. “You think this is about money? No! This is about you being her father!”
“I’m supporting her! Isn’t that what fathers do? I’ve had her sleep over and I send money. I’ve spent time with her. I’m not a deadbeat dad!”
“I never said you were!”
Seto looked at the clock on the fireplace mantel. “In an hour, you’re going home.”
Aria narrowed her eyes. “No. Lani and I are going home now.”
Seto watched Aria leave the room. He wanted to chase after her. No. I can’t stop her. If she wants to leave, I won’t stop her. I can’t give in. I gave up everything for her. I’ve put the livelihood of everyone in this company on the line. Joey is gone. I’ve lost him. I’ve lost Jaimen. Who is next?
*************
Ryou stepped into Seto’s office to look at the city below. Bakura was quiet. He had put Therion in the nursery to nap. The baby had become restless after his bottle. Once placed in the crib, the baby settled into slumber. He’ll take a little nap before Bakura comes back. It’s time for his nap anyway. Ryou stepped up to the wall of towering windows through which Seto watched the city below. Cars, appearing no bigger than the size of ants, traveled below. The two Blue Eyes White Dragon statues hovered over the crowds below.
He looked down on the city and put a hand on the window. /Bakura, please be safe out there./ Ryou walked along the wall of glass towards Seto’s desk, covered in paper and manila folders. The phone on Seto’s desk rang, taking Ryou’s attention from the city below. Maybe it’s Joey calling. Ryou slowly approached the desk and read the caller ID: Industrial Illusions.
Pegasus?
The call ended abruptly. As he looked down at the desk, a letter with the Air Force’s letterhead took his attention. What’s this? Ryou picked up the letter and read it. Oh my god. No wonder Seto is in a bad mood. Jaimen is dead. That poor boy.
“What are you doing?”
Ryou turned around quickly and saw Seto standing at the office door. “Your phone rang and--.”
“So you entered my office without my permission?”
“Are you alright, Seto?" Ryou swallowed nervously at Seto’s cold tone. “I’m sorry. I...I wanted to look outside.”
“So no other rooms on this top floor have a window? You have to come into my office?” Seto asked with a chill in his voice.
“Seto, I....I’m sorry about Jaimen.”
Seto stepped into the room and shut the door behind him. Ryou put the Air Force’s letter on the desk. Ryou heard the lock snap on the door and he backed against the desk. “You think that makes it better?” Ryou watched Seto approach him slowly. Before he could take a breath, Seto hovered over Ryou, his breath brushing across his forehead. ”Do you think your pity will bring him back?”
“I’m sorry, I should go,” Ryou said, avoiding Seto’s gaze. He stepped around Seto, but the CEO put a hand on his chest.
”I don‘t need your pity!” Seto shouted as he glared down at Ryou.
Ryou swallowed nervously and tried to walk around Seto, but the CEO grabbed his arm. “You’re not going anywhere,” Seto said, stepping in front of him.
Ryou stepped right and was quickly blocked by Seto. “Seto, let go of me.”
Seto trapped Ryou against the desk with his body. “I’m not done with you yet.”
Ryou put his hands against Seto. “Let me go, Seto.”
“What gives you the right to enter my office?”
“Seto, what’s wrong with you?” Ryou asked, his heart racing at Seto’s cold tone.
Seto grabbed Ryou’s shirt and pinned him against the desk. “Do you know what will happen if Joey finds us?”
“You’ve locked the door!” Ryou grabbed Seto’s wrist. “Seto, why are you acting so strange?”
Seto pushed Ryou against the desk and looked into his sparkling chocolate brown eyes filled with fear. Ryou’s body trembled under him. He forced himself between Ryou’s legs and lowered his upper body onto Ryou. Ryou stared wide-eyed at Seto hovering above him, pressing himself against his body. Ryou shifted his hips in an attempt to slip away from the CEO.
Seto pressed his hips and his torso harder against Ryou. His eyes were still locked onto Ryou’s eyes as panic began to grow behind them. He felt Ryou shudder beneath him, the warmth of his body, and relished in his dominance of the white-haired hikari.
“It’s your fault.....isn’t it, Ryou? Joey left me....because of......you."
Ryou’s quick breath brushed against Seto’s face. “Seto, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come in here. You’re right. Please let me up.”
Seto placed his hand on Ryou’s jaw, forcing Ryou to look in his eyes. “I wish I could quit you.” The wind began to howl outside. “What power do you continue to hold over me after all these years? Bakura may have Shadow Powers, but.....” Ryou felt Seto’s arousal grow between his legs. “You may have the most dangerous power of all.”
Ryou pushed against Seto as he tried to shift away from Seto. “Seto, please, don’t...”
“You don’t give commands!” Seto growled, leaning against Ryou.
Ryou gasped as Seto’s free hand roamed under his shirt. “Seto, this is wrong...”
“Now this is wrong? You are to blame for everything!”
“Seto, you are not yourself. If this is about Jaimen...”
Ryou winced as Seto’s hand wrapped around his throat. The white-haired hikari choked as Seto squeezed roughly.
“How dare you bring him into this!”
Ryou struggled for air as Seto pressed against him, his arousal growing harder. Ryou stared into the icy-blue eyes inches from his own.
/Bakura! Come back!/
//What the----?!//
Ryou gasped as the mindlink went silent. /Bakura!Bakura!/
The wind howled louder outside.
“Joey left me. Jaimen left me. You’re not going to leave me, too,” Seto growled as he planted his lips harshly against Ryou.
Oh my god, he snapped! Ryou thought as he felt Seto’s tongue quickly shoved between his lips.
Ryou bucked his hips against Seto in an attempt to slip from beneath the dominating CEO.
Seto released Ryou’s neck and pulled Ryou’s hips closer against his body. “Why can’t I let you go?”
“Seto, this isn’t right! Stop!” Ryou pleaded as Seto began to suck on the side of Ryou’s neck. Ryou arched his back and felt his own arousal growing as Seto cupped his left buttock in his hand. He tried to kick away, but Seto pinned him firmly against the desk.
“Seto, I can’t.....I can’t yet...” Ryou gasped as Seto’s hand slipped into his pants. “Seto, please....no.”
Seto nibbled Ryou’s neck. “I want you...”
Ryou pushed against Seto. “I can’t, Seto! I was told I couldn’t have sex for at least six weeks!”
A heavy thud from outside the window stole Seto’s attention. Ryou turned his head to see another plank of wood slam hard against the window.
/Bakura! Bakura, speak to me!/ Bakura was silent. /Angel, talk to me!/
Nothing.
Ryou closed his eyes as he felt streams of liquid running down his face. Ryou turned his head and reached for the phone. Seto grabbed Ryou’s wrist and tried to pull it away from the phone.
Ryou quickly struck his left fist against Seto’s jaw. The CEO winced in pain as his head whipped to the side. Ryou shifted from under Seto and hurried to slip away.
Bakura needs me... Ryou jolted as Seto grabbed his arm as he tried to flee.
“You’re not going to leave me, too!”
“Let me go!” Ryou exclaimed angrily. “Bakura needs me!”
Seto squeezed Ryou’s arm. “This is all your fault! Joey leaving me! Aria! It’s your fault! If you hadn’t made Aria, none of this would have happened!”
Therion began to wail in the adjoining room.
“You sound just like Yami!” Ryou snarled. “I will not apologize for Aria!”
“Even in high school, I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. I’ve wanted you for so long. I wanted Joey. I wanted you. Why did you just turn me away like everyone else?” Seto growled as he angrily shook Ryou.
Ryou tried to pull his arm from Seto’s grasp. “Because I knew you were truly not the callous, cold-hearted man that everyone else knew you to be. I know that is not who you truly are.”
Seto pulled Ryou against him. “How do you know who I really am?”
Ryou pushed against Seto. “My baby needs me, Seto.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“Seto, release me!”
“You are testing my patience.”
“Have you lost your mind?”
Seto narrowed his eyes. “I loved you, Ryou. You should have been with me!”
“Do you truly think Bakura would have allowed that?”
“You could have lived here with me!”
“I loved Bakura!”
“You used me, is that it?” Seto chuckled. “I don’t know why I saw it before. You would run here like a god-damn coward every time Bakura beat your ass!”
Ryou grit his teeth. “You welcomed me in!”
Seto pulled Ryou against the desk again. “I’m not finished with you yet!”
Therion screamed louder in the adjoining room. Seto and Ryou were startled by another thump against the window. Ryou turned his head to see a large “H” crash against the shatterproof window. Ambulances and police sirens pierced the air from below.
/Bakura!/
******************
“Master Joey! Mr. Kaiba’s been waiting for you! I’ll tell him you are here,” Jay said from behind the security elevator.
“No, Jay. I’ll go up and talk to him. Don’t bother him. He’s probably working on something very important.”
“As you wish, Master Joey.”
Joey stepped into the elevator and typed in his access code. Master Malik wants Seto’s God Card. Once I have it in my possession, I will return it to his rightful owner. Slyfer the Sky Dragon remains lost. I couldn’t find it in Yugi’s shop. No doubt it lies crushed. Aria left here in a rush. I wonder what she was doing here. Probably fucking Kaiba. Wonder what she’s going to do after hearing about her father’s unfortunate accident. Shame.
The elevator door opened. A baby cried in the bedroom beside Seto’s office.
“Seto Kaiba doesn’t ask for what he wants!” Joey heard Seto rage from behind his office door.
Joey stepped into the bedroom and saw a baby with white hair sobbing in the crib. The newborn’s face was red with tear-stained cheeks.
“It’s your fault Joey left me!” Seto bellowed angrily.
Joey lifted his head. He must be with Ryou. Joey left the baby cry and walked to the keyhole to Seto’s office. The blond walked across the hall to the bedroom he shared with Seto. Joey approached a painting by Edvard Munch entitled “Love and Pain” hanging by Seto’s side of the bed. He pulled the painting towards him to reveal a safe built into the wall. Seto hides his treasures behind here...Now for the combination....Left 18......Right 32......
A blood-curdling scream pierced the hallway. Joey turned his head as Therion’s scream grew louder.
“You’ve never denied me!” Seto screamed with fury.
“Seto, this isn’t you! This is not who you are!”
“I’m not asking for anything anymore, Ryou! I’m taking what I want! If I’d done this years ago, maybe I wouldn’t have fallen for you!”
Joey narrowed his eyes as he turned to the safe. Left 10. That should do it. Joey opened the safe as another scream pierced the air from Seto’s office. It was Seto’s scream. He reached into the safe and removed Obelisk the Tormentor from the safe. Clad in a special clear plastic box, Joey knew Seto wanted to keep it separate from his deck.
Joey closed the safe and turned the combination lock. He turned on his heels as Ryou’s screaming continued. Joey narrowed his eyes. He recognized that scream. That haunting scream.
“Joey left me because of you!”
A scream of pain echoed from Seto’s office. A moment later, Ryou was frantically shaking the doorknob. “I told you ‘No!'" Ryou unlocked the office door, hobbling out of the office, and pulling his pants up. His whimpers of pain echoed down the hall as he limped to Therion.
Ryou gasped as he buttoned the top of his jeans. He whimpered in pain as he entered the nursery. “Let’s go, baby. Time for us to leave.”
Seto’s door flew open as Ryou stepped out of the bedroom. “Ryou, get back here!”
Ryou clutched Therion to his chest as Seto raced towards him. Ryou turned on his heels and ran for the elevator. Seto narrowed his eyes and raced into his office desk.
The blond grinned as he watched his lover disappear into his office. I have what I came for. Enjoy your punishment, Ryou, for coming between Seto and I.
//Jay, don’t let Ryou leave the building.//
Ryou clutched the crying newborn against his chest as his body began to throb with pain. /Bakura! Bakura, are you alright?/
Nothing.
“Something isn’t right, baby.” Therion nuzzled against his mother’s neck and gripped onto his shirt with his tiny fingers. “Hurry up, you stupid elevator!”
When the elevator doors opened, Jay stood in the open doorway. “Going up, Ryou?”
“Excuse me, Jay,” Ryou said quickly as he tried to step out of the elevator.
“Mr.Kaiba wants to see you on the top floor.”
Ryou swallowed nervously. “Jay, please don’t do this.”
“Ryou, please don’t make this harder than it has to. I have a job to do,” Jay said, entering the elevator. Jay reached over to input his security code clearance.
Ryou narrowed his eyes and swiftly kicked Jay’s leg. Ryou slid between the closing elevator doors and raced through the front doors with the crying baby against his chest. He ran down the steps, frantically looking for the car. Bakura must have taken it. Damn. A police squad with “K-9 Unit” blazoned on the side raced by him.
“Ryou, wait!” Ryou turned his head to see Maxine, Asher, and Donny running down the stairs.
Ryou ran through the crowd, his stomach burning and churning. His body throbbed with pain as he dodged other pedestrians.
“We just want to talk to you!” Maxine called to him as he darted down an alley.
Ryou breathed heavily as he heard a heavy thump in front of him. A heavy plank fell in front of him. What the bloody hell is going on? Wood falling from the sky? He turned the corner and emerged one block over.
“Did you see that storm?” he heard one person ask.
“The old Game Shop is gone! Blew away!”
Ryou gasped. What?! Ryou ran towards the Game Shop where he saw a crowd gathering around a pile of debris. Police pushed curious onlookers to a safe distance and erected barriers to keep the crowds away. The K-9 unit had arrived before Ryou and was already sniffing around the pile of cinderblocks, wood, concrete, and broken glass.
Oh my god....Bakura! He was going to look there!
“Officer, I’m telling you! Somebody is buried beneath that rubble!” a nearby woman screamed at an policewoman.
Ryou looked over at the woman. “Jewel!” Ryou rushed to the woman who was one of Bakura’s contacts.
Jewel saw Ryou and gasped. “Ryou! You look terrible!”
“Jewel...please...was Bakura in there?”
Jewel nodded. “Bakura ran into the building and a few minutes later this freak storm came out of nowhere. It looked like a hurricane with a horrifying face in the sky.”
Ryou looked at the pile of rubble in fear. “I haven’t heard anything from Bakura since he left KaibaCorp!”
“I just sent Jacks to your house to tell you what happened.”
“Nobody’s at the house.”
Ryou and Jewel’s attention was taken by the K-9 unit barking and sitting by the rubble. The K-9 handler turned to his partner. “There’s someone under here. Can anyone hear me?” Silence.
/Bakura, say something!/
Nothing.
“Bakura didn’t leave the building before it collapsed?”
Jewel shook her head. “Nobody left the building before it crumbled.”
The rescue team began removing debris from the pile.
Ryou watched hopefully as he stood beside Jewel. Therion’s sobs had diminished into quiet breathing. Ryou looked down to find the boy asleep in his arms.
“Bakura told me his son was born. Congratulations, Ryou.”
Ryou smiled and nodded. “Thank you. Not even a week old yet.” Ryou looked around nervously. If Kaiba’s men followed me....Ryou shifted closer to Jewel as they watched the rescue operation continue.
“We found one!” a triumphant cry came after an hour.
The dog began to bark as Jewel and Ryou watched hopefully. Ten men pulled heavy beams away and used tools to move a chunk of concrete away from the body. Ryou and Jewel moved through the crowd near where the crews frantically worked to free the person.
“Bakura!” Ryou called.
Ryou saw a foot revealed as they moved the beam. “That’s not Bakura’s shoe,” Ryou said.
As the crews continued to reveal more of the trapped person, Ryou saw the disappointed look on the men’s faces. “HQ, we have an 11-44. Male. Deceased.” When Ryou saw the crew remove the body, he gasped.
“Glenn! Jewel, that’s Glenn! Yugi’s boyfriend!”
A nearby officer heard Ryou call the victim’s name. “You know this person?”
“Yes, his name is Glenn. He was Yugi Motou’s boyfriend. He lived here with him.”
“Where is this Yugi Motou now?”
Ryou shrugged. “I don’t know where he is. Oh my god....I hope he’s not dead. Officer, there may be somebody else buried under there. He’s my.....partner.”
“Once we free the corpse, we can continue our search."
Ryou watched as Glenn’s corpse was dragged from the rubble, his eyes open and his body covered in blood. The noose wrapped around his neck surprised Ryou. “Did....did Glenn kill himself?” Ryou covered his mouth as they placed Glenn’s body into a black bag and wheel it into an ambulance. “Oh my....Yugi. Bakura.”
The dog continued to whine and paw at the rubble. Ryou looked down at his pocket as his phone began to vibrate.
“Bakura?”
[No,Ryou.It’s Robbie. Where are you?]
“Yugi’s Game Shop...or, what’s left of it.”
[What do you mean?]
“Jewel described it as a hurricane with a face.”
[....What?]
“A hurricane with a face....destroyed the Game Shop. They just pulled Glenn’s body out of the rubble. Yugi is missing.”
[Oh man, that’s awful! Is Bakura missing, too?]
“Bakura....may be trapped in the rubble of the Game Shop. The rescue dog is sensing someone is in there, but they haven’t reached the person yet.”
[Bakura? Alright, well,I’ll tell Marik.]
Ryou’s eyes widened. “Marik? Is he alright?”
[This is Marik we’re talking about. Is he ever alright?]
“True.”
[Stay put.I’ll tell Marik. We’ll be there to pick you up.]
“Alright,Robbie. Be careful.”
[You, too, Ryou! Bye!]
Ryou ended the call and watched anxiously as the men continued to remove debris.
“You can't sense anything from him, Ryou?" Jewel asked him.
“No....I can't. I keep trying to talk to him, but I haven't heard anything." Ryou paused. “I can't believe Glenn is dead. I hope Yugi made it out of the house." Ryou watched the ambulance carry away Glenn's body. “I can't believe he's gone. I hope Bakura made it out before the building collapsed."
“I didn't see anyone run out of the building," Jewel said. “The dog knows someone else is buried under there."
Ryou hugged Therion and rocked him as more heavy wooden beams were removed from the pile. “How unfortunate," Ryou heard a voice behind him.
Ryou gasped and turned his head. Donny and Maxine stood behind him. “I can't go back to Seto. Bakura needs me."
“Ryou, Master Kaiba ordered us not to let you out of the building."
Ryou swallowed nervously. “I'm not going back."
“Ryou," Maxine said calmly. “We don't want to be the bad guys here."
Ryou looked back at the pile and narrowed his eyes. “I'm not going back."
Jewel turned to Donny. “Ryou doesn't want to go with you. He's staying here with me."
“Let us handle this, honey," Maxine said.
“I'm not your ‘honey.' You think its wise to make a scene here? There's cops everywhere."
Donny smirked. “You think they're not on Kaiba's payroll?"
Jewel crossed her arms against her chest. “You think my girls can't convince the cops to refuse Kaiba's money?"
Maxine laughed. “Refuse Kaiba money? Honey, money talks. It screams quite loudly in the right hands to have things go your way."
Donny put a hand on Ryou's shoulder. “Ryou, come with us."
“Get your bloody hands off me," Ryou turned his head furiously.
“Ryou, we mean business."
Ryou gasped as he felt the barrel of a gun against his spine. They want to shoot me! “Maxie, please. I don't want to go back to Kaiba."
“Officers! This woman has a gun!"
The crowd began to scream and disperse. Maxine quickly sheathed her gun under her jacket. The police turned to Jewel and reached for their weapons. Donny pulled Maxine away as the crowd quickly fled the scene, leaving Ryou and Jewel alone.
”Who had a gun?” a policewoman asked.
”They went that way!” Jewel exclaimed, pointing in the direction of Maxine and Donny.”
Two cops ran to pursue Kaiba‘s personnel.
“Thank you, Jewel," Ryou said as he trembled, cradling Therion against him.
Jewel put a hand on Ryou's shoulder. “You're alright,Ryou. Do you need me to hold the little one?”
“I have him,” Ryou whispered as he shook his head.
The police kept watch as the rescue crews continued to pull away bricks. Broken glass shuffled across the concrete as they moved wood and store merchandise. Duel Monsters dolls, action figures, and cards were cataloged, photographed, and placed into evidence bags. The dog continued to bark and whine.
“Ryou!"
Ryou turned his head to see Robbie and Marik run up to him. “Marik!"
Marik walked up to Ryou and wrapped his arms tightly around him. “Are you alright?"
Ryou nodded. “That's my line," he said with a smile. “Where's Malik?"
The yami shook his head. “He's.....I don't want to talk about it."
Ryou looked into the yami's purple eyes. “Is he safe?"
“He believes himself to be safe. What about Bakura?"
Ryou looked at the pile of debris with Marik's muscular arms wrapped around him. After Donny, Maxine, and Seto's erratic behavior, he knew he was safe. Nothing would harm him with Marik nearby. “Jewel said that he's still buried under there."
“Itemri has the Millennium Ring, doesn't he?"
Ryou looked at the Millennium Rod in Marik's hand. “The Ring will sense the presence of your Millennium Rod!"
Robbie stared wide-eyed at the rubble. “Holy Jesus! It's gone!"
The dog began to scratch at the bricks and began to dig at the pile of dust.
“Did they find Yugi in there?"
Ryou shook his head. “No,but they did find Glenn's body. He.....he had a rope around his neck."
Robbie sighed. “Oh my god, that's terrible!"
Marik pulled Ryou closer to him. “This can't be a coincidence."
“What isn't a coincidence?"
“I'll tell you at home. Not near these cops and their firesticks."
Ryou watched a group of men move a pile of sheetrock. “Bakura!"
Jewel, Marik, and Robbie saw a limp blood and dust-covered hand protruding from a pile of roof shingles, wooden beams, and bricks.
“HQ, another body has been uncovered. Condition of the victim unknown. Debris must be cleared to remove the body," the officer reported into his radio.
“That's Bakura's hand!" Ryou exclaimed. “Bakura!"
Jewel folded her hands against her chest. “At least they found him."
Marik looked sadly at the layers of debris covering his lover. “How long has he been laying under there?"
Jewel shook her head. “At least two hours. It's going to be at least another three before they can reach him."
Robbie stood beside Ryou. “Do you want me to take Therion home to my place?"
Ryou looked down at the fussing boy. “He needs his diaper changed and he must be hungry by now."
“I'll stay here with Jewel," Marik said. “It's going to be a while before Bakura is freed."
Ryou turned to Robbie. I can't leave Marik. What if Seto's men follow me? “Robbie, can you take care of the baby for me? I know you will take good care of him."
Robbie nodded. “He's in good hands, Ry."
Ryou watched Robbie take the boy carefully in his arm. I know Donny and Maxine won't be so cruel as to take Therion away from Robbie....no matter what Kaiba's orders were. Therion can't catch a chill. With Marik around, I know they won't come after me again.
Jewel, Marik, and Ryou watched as Bakura slowly became visible. As night drew near, the light from the street made the Millennium Ring sparkle. Ryou watched one of the spikes of the Ring point towards Marik's Millennium Rod.
They pulled Bakura's limp body from the rubble and laid him on the pavement.
“We need a stretcher! HQ, Code 10. Notify Domino Hospital."
“Bakura!" Ryou called as he broke away from Marik's grasp and ducked under the crowd control barrier.
“Sir, you are not permitted to cross that line!" a policewoman said as she stood in his way.
“He's my husband!" Ryou exclaimed.
“Sir, we have to assess his condition!"
Ryou saw Bakura's condition clearly in the street light. Bakura laid on his back, his white spiky hair covered in blood. His clothing was torn and bloody. A gold box tumbled from underneath his body, its contents tumbling to the floor as he was pulled from the wreckage.
“Yugi's Puzzle Box!" Ryou exclaimed as he gripped onto the woman holding him back.
“Bakura was protecting it," Jewel said.
A man carefully placed Yugi‘s golden box and its contents into a bag as evidence.
“I have to get to my husband!”
“Sir, if you don't step over the line,we will have you arrested."
Marik reached out for Ryou."Let's go to the hospital, Ry. We'll meet Bakura there.”
Ryou reluctantly released the woman as Bakura was placed on a stretcher. “Bakura....”
Marik put his arms lightly on Ryou’s shoulders. “There are too many people here to put him into the Millennium Ring. Let the doctors do what they can for him.”
Ryou watched the doctors place Bakura in the ambulance. “Alright,” he said sadly. “Let’s go.”
“Ryou,” Jewel said. “He’s strong. He’ll pull through.”
Ryou nodded. “Thanks, Jewel.” Ryou stayed close to Marik as they approached Marik’s car.
Ryou stayed quiet as he sat beside Marik. Marik jumped into the driver's side, slipped the key into the ignition, and gripped the steering wheel tightly. Ryou watched as Marik gazed down at the wheel, but seemed miles away.
“Marik? Are you alright?" Ryou asked as he put his hand on Marik's leg.
The blond took a deep breath and gripped Ryou's hand tightly. He continued looking ahead down as if deep in thought. Marik's dark-skinned thumb brushed against Ryou's light skin.
‘Something must have happened with Malik.....I wonder what that could be. He's definitely not himself,' Ryou thought as Marik kissed the back of Ryou's hand.
“Later," he said as he raised his head to look at the ambulance. “Bakura needs us."
**************************
Malik looked at the closed tomb door. His yami had chosen a life above ground. He wasn’t surprised. What did surprise him was his sudden loss of control when he stabbed Aten. Deep down, a part of him loved Aten as a son. Then there was how Marik changed after the boy was born.
Aten this......Aten that......
He’s dying, Malik. What do you want me to do? I have to talk to Ryou about Aten’s heart surgery. We have to talk to Aten’s teacher.
Malik’s POV
Marik isn’t the same person I knew. I know he despised being down here. Why couldn’t he see the good things that Odion did here? They couldn’t have been easy. This place feels more like home now than it ever did. I know Odion and Marik never saw eye to eye. But he could have at least acknowledged what he did to make this place feels more like home and less a prison.
Why couldn’t he see it from my perspective? He could have stayed down here with me. But no. He wanted life on the surface. He grabbed his most important asset......his son.
Aten’s place is with his family. Me. The Ishtar name. The Ishtar home. He’s dead. He belongs in a tomb. This is a tomb. This is home. He hasn’t had the time to see how great life can be down here with everything that Odion has done. We have to get him back. Robbie has no Tombkeeper blood, no lineage. But Marik and Aten should be here. They belong here.
“Malik, open the door,” a familiar voice says behind me.
“I’m sorry, Yugi. I can’t.”
Yugi looked up at Malik with tears in his eyes. “Glenn needs me.”
“You saw him swing, Yugi. You know as well as I do that there’s no helping him.”
Yugi closed his eyes tightly as tears rained down his cheek. “You killed him......”
I did? It must have happened while the mask was on my face. I don’t remember....
“Yugi, I’m......sorry.”
“Sorry won’t bring Glenn back to life! How could you do this to him?He never did anything to you!” Yugi screamed at me.
He has every right to be angry, but I don’t remember....
“Yugi, that mask.....I couldn’t control myself.”
“Then why are you still here? You and me need to get out of here. You always said how much you hated this place. We can get out of here while the others are asleep.”
I shook my head. “The door is trapped. Besides, Yugi, it’s not so bad down here now.”
“This isn’t your home, Malik. Your place is with Marik, Ryou, and Bakura.”
I rolled my eyes. My place isn’t there. Ryou and Bakura are too wrapped up in each other. My yami.....my yami and I have grown apart. Perhaps I can persuade him to come back. The Tombkeepers and Rare Hunters brought him here before. If not, I’m sure I can find bait.
“I don’t belong there. Odion has always accepted me. My sister always looked out for me. Maybe I don’t belong with them anymore. Maybe here I can have a real family.”
“Marik IS your family! Glenn was my family! I know you and Marik had some rocky times, but you’ve always managed to work things out.” Yugi looked around nervously. “Malik, we have to leave here. Tonight.”
I grit my teeth. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying here.”
“Then I’ll leave myself!” Yugi said defiantly.
Yugi turned and walked away. He’s the pharaoh’s reincarnation. He should be here too. After all, hundreds of generations have remained here all their lives to guard his tomb. That means he should be down here with us. He’ll come around. Once he gets used to being down here, maybe he’ll find its not all bad.
I walked down the hallway slowly. I’ve missed Odion and my sister. Maybe we truly can be a real family again. Continuing down the hall, I came to another intersection. Turning right, I saw a door on my left which lead to a big room with Rare Hunters standing inside. Above the room, an opening to the surface many feet in the air.The moon is out tonight and its full. One of Yami’s thrones looks like it has been polished and set on a dais.
“That is your rightful seat as the head of our family,” Odion said as he emerged from the group.
“Odion, why did you take Yugi?”
“He is the pharaoh’s reincarnation. The Tombkeepers have been charged with caring for the pharaoh’s tomb until his return. He has returned.....using your friend’s body. However, the pharaoh’s soul is no longer here. The Tombkeepers can feel it.The Rare Hunters will help bring him back.”
I ran my hand along the polished gold. “Why should we bring him back? He was terrible.”
Odion lifted his head. “He was still our king. I am aware of his sins. We are all aware. But, he was a strong leader. He was still our king.Yugi Motou will be required when we obtain the pharaoh’s spirit again.”
“His soul is stuck in the Shadow Realm unless someone can track down his gold box.”
I looked at the seat. I thought I had put the Rare Hunters and the Tombkeepers behind me. The sea of faces looking at me hopefully and with devotion in their eyes made me consider. Maybe the Ishtar family can be reborn. Perhaps it can be great once more. We were Nobles in Ancient Egypt. A proud and royal family. The others watched my every move as I slowly sat on the throne.
My hands rest upon the gold chair as I sat back. My eyes closed as I assumed the seat as head of the Ishtar family. For many generations, an Ishtar male has sat on this seat and carried out the Tombkeepers legacy.
Perhaps we can rewrite history. A new history. Then maybe I can show Marik how great the Ishtar name can be and he will return.
“It’s time for the dawn of a new era,” I told the Rare Hunters and Tombkeepers. “I am Malik Ramses Ishtar, first born son of Kamenwatu Ishtar. Today, my loyal subjects, we shall remove the stain which has blighted our family for too long. You have welcomed me back as your leader and I will not fail to disappoint you.”
The Rare Hunters and Tombkeepers kneeled before Malik on the throne.
“We shall show the world what it means to be an Ishtar. We will not only be the most powerful family in Egypt, but we shall extend our reach beyond, and will regain our rightful place in history.”
“Hail, Lord Malik, our rightful king!” the men chanted in unison.
Yugi watched the men bow before their ruler as he peeked through the doorway. Oh my god.....this is terrible. I have to warn the others.
“Eavesdropping is like friendship,” a voice said behind him. “Yeah, friendship.”
Yugi turned around to see Anzu behind him. He grabbed Anzu’s arms tightly. “Anzu, you are a crap-load less annoying like this, but you have to snap out of it!” he shook her roughly. “We have to get out of here.”
Anzu’s classic blank stare and empty smile remained unchanged as she cocked her head to the side. “But, Yugi....this is a place of everlasting friendship and puppies and kitties. This is a tomb full of friendliness. Tombs are like friendship.”
“Oh, please don’t--."
“Yeah! Friendship!"
Yugi closed his eyes tightly. “Anzu, please listen to me and try to understand something that isn’t related to friendship for a moment! We can’t stay here. We have to go. Now! I need your help.”
“Friends always help each other,” she said, her blank, creepy smile widening more. “Yes!” Yugi exclaimed, trying to get her small brain to comprehend. “Friends always help each other!Help me get out of here!”
“I can’t do that, Yugi. You need to stay and be friendly with us.”
Yugi released Anzu and clenched his fists. “You are the most brain-dead moron I have ever met! I always knew you had the intelligence of a flea, but I think its tinier than a flea! God, why the hell did I ever hang out with you in high school? Seriously! You want to stay here? Fine. I’m going to find a way out!” Yugi ran around Anzu.
Anzu watched Yugi run down the hallway. “Yay! Yugi and I are friends!”
