Eros surveyed the assortment of pawns he had gathered, his expression one of smug amusement. He could see varying degrees of confusion and anger on their faces, but he had nothing to fear from them. The majority of them were merely mortal, after all, no matter how gifted they might be. He was a God. Of course, the fool womanizer Carrot was a God himself, but he had no idea how to fully utilize his power so he was no threat. He strolled around the room in a deliberate, slow manner, eyeing each of them in turn, grinning at his selection of bachelors for the difficult young woman who had been a thorn in his match making side for far too long.
Two womanizers (one of which was a God and the other cursed to turn into a dog), an emotionally handicapped assassin, a demon enslaved to another woman, a businessman with no interest in love, a power hungry war monger, and a horribly psychologically scarred man who Eros was pretty certain was bisexual, at least that’s what he hoped since a gay man would not make a suitable love partner for a woman...These men were hardly acceptable dating material, yet well within the range of what Laurel’s foolish requirements had been when she had declared she’d take any attractive anime man over a real man.She was going to regret her ridiculous statement before this was through, he knew. And while punishing her would be enjoyable, and watching her squirm an added delight, what Eros really meant to accomplish was getting her to fall in love. True, he had picked some rather difficult men for her to work with, but each had good qualities. These traits were just hidden; he’d leave it up to Laurel to seek them out on her own. She had no choice really. She wouldn’t be leaving Conquest until she had well and truly fallen for someone. He didn’t care how long it took. He had forever to wait, after all. This was a battle of wills, and he refused to lose to a mortal.
He circled around the men, ignoring their stares, until he stood in front of Laurel. Behind her hovered the dark shape of the Shinma Larva, obviously the creature felt protective of her. Eros had assumed the demon would take it upon himself to watch over Laurel since she was physically similar to Miyu. As usual, he had been correct. “Doubtless you are all wondering why you are here,” he began in a casual voice, addressing everyone in the room though his eyes never left Laurel.
There were several mutters of irritable acknowledgement, and Eros had to suppress a smile at their cantankerous moods. Only one day together and they were already getting on each others nerves. This was going to be more amusing than he’d first thought. “Well, I have gathered you here for one reason,” Eros went on in a deceptively nonchalant voice, glee shining in his beautiful eyes. “But first, I think an introduction is in order.”
The room reverberated with groans of protest, more then a few of them were tired of the numerous introductions they had already participated in. “Not you fools,” Eros barked, a slight frown marring his devastating features. “I was referring to myself. I am Eros, the God of Love. It is my duty to arrange love matches, and it is for this reason you are here.”
There were murmurs of confusion from the men, but Laurel was deadly silent, a sick feeling spreading through her as she met the laughing gaze of the gorgeous youth. There were seven men here, and only one woman. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the person he was trying to arrange a love match for was her. Apparently this fact hadn’t dawned on the men yet. She was not looking forward to seeing their reactions when the truth finally hit them. Eros grinned, seeing that Laurel knew exactly what he was getting at. “You see, I have been trying to set one particular young woman up for quite some time, and she has proven to be exceedingly difficult and unmanageable. In fact, she has been so evasive I am being forced to take drastic measures.”
“What the hell are you talking about,” Aya impatiently demanded.
Eros paid no attention to the volatile redhead. “Numerous times I have set this woman up with eligible men and she has rejected them time and again. I was starting to run out of suitors as well as ideas, when the lady in question said something that gave me inspiration for this little game you are going to participate in.”
The sick feeling was starting to overwhelm Laurel, and she nearly swayed in place as the room started to spin. Was she going to faint again? She clearly remembered saying something about being willing to take any good looking anime man over a real man, and as she let her bemused eyes trace over the men in the room with her, she realized she was getting her wish. She should have worded her request more carefully, and she would have if she’d had any idea Eros actually existed.
“I do not play in any game I have not begun myself,” Nakago quietly commented, his blue eyes fierce.
Eros paid no attention to him, the God was peering at Laurel intently, watching full realization spread over her dazed face. “You see, the woman I have been trying to find a suitable mate for is none other then Laurel Grove. And you men are to be her suitors.”
Absolute silence reigned in the room for about five seconds. And then all hell broke loose. Each man tried to speak simultaneously, and the din of their voices made the room spin around Laurel with increasing speed. Her stomach was in knots, her heart was pounding and she was having difficulty breathing. The world was growing black on the edges. Just when she thought she would surely faint, a strong pair of arms caught her up in a gentle embrace and steadied her. Laurel looked up and went still in surprise when her eyes met the golden stare of Eros. A strange feeling of peace swept through her, and she had the craziest notion everything would be fine, even though she had been kidnapped and placed in an alternate realm with a band of anime men who were there for her to look over like stallions on a selling block. She blinked into his endless eyes and she knew he meant her no harm but rather wanted to help her. Their gazes wavered as the other men managed to calm down enough so that each one could take a turn speaking.
“You brought me here, leaving my brother without guidance and my company to run itself, to force me to pursue a woman,” Seto snarled, his sapphire eyes narrowed in fury. “I don’t have time for this nonsense.”
“Nor do I,” Nakago echoed, “I have an entire army to oversee. I am not interested in chasing after some female at another’s behest.”
“While you have me holed up here, my team is out there risking death for the people of the world,” Aya barked.
“And the children who live in my home are no doubt running wild, destroying everything in their path,” Shigure added his own lament. “Not to mention my editor is probably going to have heart failure over my disappearance.”
“I cannot remain here,” Larva announced. “My duty is to my mistress Miyu. Without me, she cannot slay all of the Shinma that torture the living.”
Carrot and Subaru, who could not be more different in temperament, were strangely silent. For his part, Carrot really didn’t mind having a little time off. He felt he worked hard most of the time and deserved some rest every now and then. Laurel wasn’t hard on the eyes by any means, of course he had no intentions of settling down any time soon, but she could be fun to hang out with. He did object to being brought here against his will, and he was certain his brother Marron was probably worried about him, but until he knew more about Eros and the place they were residing, there was little he could do. Subaru was silent for numerous reasons. He knew he was the head of two clans now, and he had an endless number of duties to tend to, and it was for this very reason he was in no hurry to return home. It seemed his entire life he had been doing as duty decreed; he had been obeying a destiny he had no interest in. Even the death of his beloved had been foreordained. Since the passing of Seishirou, Subaru had inherited the responsibilities of clan leader to a band of assassins in addition to the overseeing of his own clan. He was tired, worn down emotionally, physically and spiritually. The atrocities he had seen and endured in his life had broken him, he had little left to live for save duty, and he had learned to hate it. His controlled life was starting to wear away at his tenuous grip on sanity. This respite might be the last chance he had of saving himself from madness.
He turned somber eyes to Laurel, taking in her pretty face and haunting eyes. There was something about her that reminded him of his sister. She seemed kind and spirited, and he suspected he could find himself drawn to her given time. His heart had belonged to Seishirou, but Subaru did not see love and attraction in terms of male and female. He desired people based on who they were, he loved what was inside as much as outside. It was not unthinkable for him to engage in a relationship with a woman, but he wasn’t certain he had anything left to give.
Eros heard all of their protests and ignored them, gracing only Laurel with is undivided attention. “No matter the wishes of your companions, the game will commence. It will only end when you choose one of these men to be yours.”
Laurel glared at him, the early accord she had shared with him forgotten, feeling angry and frightened and uncertain, for how could she dare challenge a God? But it went against her nature to cower, and her pride spurred her into boldly walking over to Subaru, who happened to be the closest man. “I choose him, then.”
Subaru blinked at her in surprise, but before anyone could react, Eros let out a roar of laughter. “Oh no child, it won’t be that easy. You have to choose with your heart, not your head. And don’t bother trying to trick me, either. I know Love when I see it, and right now you have no attachments to any of these men.”
“Listen I’m not going to be anyone’s love toy,” Aya barked.
Carrot raised a hand and shouted gleefully, “I will!”
Shigure howled with laughter and said, “I suppose I wouldn’t mind it either, under different circumstances.”
“Will you two get hold of yourselves,” Seto snapped in anger, enraged by his apparent inability to extricate himself from this bizarre mess, wanting to break something to appease his rage. No one spared them so much as a glance.
“You said regardless of our wishes, the game you have planned will commence,” Nakago drawled in an icy voice that sent shivers of dread down Laurel’s spine. “But if we refuse to participate, then your little plan will fail.”
“But we will be stuck here until Laurel chooses one of us,” Larva quietly replied, drawing stares of surprise from the other men and a nod of agreement from Eros. “He is a God, and his domain is Love. If he is holding us here until one of us captures Laurel’s heart, then he will do so until the deed has been done. Time means nothing to an Immortal.”
“Very good Larva,” Eros agreed in a pleasant tone, his smile grating on the men’s nerves. “You are quite correct. You will all remain in Conquest until Laurel has chosen herself a mate from among you. Time means nothing in this realm, I can keep you here for centuries and you will never age a day. You will cooperate with my wishes and participate in my plans if you ever wish to leave this place.” Before anyone could reply to this decree, Eros was gone as quickly as he had appeared.
