Disturbed : Chapter 8
Malik arrived at the clinic and was about to knock on Pegasus’s office door when Odion walked out of his office and stopped him.
“He’s with a patient” Odion said kindly, “Come into my office, I have something you can do while you wait” he offered.
Malik shrugged and went into Odion’s office and put his book bag down in a chair.
“You’re really late today” Odion observed, getting out a stack load of files.
“I was helping a friend. It was really important” Malik explained, walking over to Odion’s desk and looking at the pictures of his family, most of them were of his nephews and nieces.
“That was nice of you” Odion commented on Malik’s reply.
“You don’t have a family?” Malik asked, looking up at the man.
Odion smiled, “No, just haven’t met the right person yet I guess. I’m not old yet, I still have time” he chuckled.
“I suppose…I don’t know if I want a family. I suppose I should, you know, keep the race going or whatever” Malik shrugged.
“Well, you should want children and be ready to have them. It changes your life forever, having kids” Odion looked at Malik curiously, “Anyway, I just need you to open the folder and look at this paper right here” Odion opened the top folder and pointed to a blue sheet stapled to the back of the flap, “And up at the top is the date the patient started coming here. If it’s been a year or longer, I’d like you to mark the name on the tab with a red marker” Odion smiled at Malik’s raised eyebrow. “Hey, you need to do something, we’re paying you, remember?” Odion chuckled.
“Yeah, yeah” Malik sighed, “How long is Pegasus going to be with that patient?” he asked as he sat in a chair and began to look at the files.
“Probably about another thirty minutes. He didn’t seem too happy that you were late” Odion sat in his chair behind his desk, watching Malik’s expression carefully. “So, did you see Bakura and tell him that something important?” Odion asked.
Malik had almost forgot he had mentioned that to Odion; but the doctor had listened in on his phone call, “Yeah, I did. This morning, actually” Malik marked one of the folders and put it aside. Malik looked up at Odion watching him, “Don’t you have anything to do?” he asked, a bit annoyed.
Odion shrugged, “I had an appointment cancelled. I’m waiting for my next one. You’re doing my work for me” he smiled when Malik rolled his eyes and looked at the next folder. “What made you want to go into psychology?” Odion asked and sipped his coffee.
“I want to help people” Malik shrugged.
“That’s good. Why mentally? You could have been a surgeon instead” Odion asked casually.
“It’s interesting. I like learning things that affect people’s behaviors and talking to people about what’s bothering them. Really, I think emotional pain is worse than physical. And I believe that if you become mentally well, your physical being will be healthier as well” Malik answered, not bothering to look up.
Odion nodded, “Yeah, it is fascinating. When I first started college I…” Odion chuckled, “I wanted to be an engineer, actually. But after a two years my sister, Isis” Odion pointed to a picture of her on his desk, “She suffered a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide. She seemed fine, like any other day, happy, giving, hard-working. The family realized she had kept many things that did bother her inside because she felt she couldn’t talk to anyone; she didn’t want to upset her friends and family and she didn’t want to be ‘selfish’. After that I realized there are a lot of people suffering on the inside and found that I had a desire to want to help those people, so I switched to psychology” Odion shared.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that. Your sister, she lived, right?” Malik asked, now looking up at the doctor.
“Yeah, she lived. But three months later she got in a car accident with a drunk driver and has been in a coma ever since, but still alive” Odion noticed the sympathy in Malik’s lavender eyes. “She’ll wake up one day, I’m sure. She’s young, she still has much life ahead of her. It’s tragic, but I try to think positive instead of dwelling on the bad things.”
“It’s still sad” Malik looked at the picture of the young woman, “She’s very pretty. I can tell she was a smart, wise person. She would make a good mom” Malik looked back at Odion, “How old is she now?” he asked.
“Twenty four” Odion answered.
“Wow, makes life seem so precious…and short” Malik shook his head.
“Yes, it does” Odion nodded, “And it shouldn’t be wasted.”
Malik nodded in agreement and looked at another folder and marked it.
“Do you love Pegasus, Malik?” Odion asked in a lower voice.
Malik looked up at the doctor, his eyes wide, “I..no, of course not” he chuckled nervously and looked at the next folder.
“I think you two are kind of obvious, actually. Now, don’t get me wrong, Pegasus is a good guy, you know, good therapist, but I don’t know if you two are best for each other” Odion sipped his coffee again.
Malik looked at the man in front of him, “Please don’t tell” he begged.
“I won’t. But Pegasus and I have been friends for a very long time, since second grade if I remember correctly and I do think everyone has the right to be in love and have someone, but Pegasus isn’t the best lover, Malik, especially for you” Odion warned.
“Why not?” Malik asked, wondering of Odion was telling the truth.
“Well, for one it’s the age. Ten years from now you’re going to be 28 and he’s going to be 40. And I’ve always noticed his temper. I know you didn’t get the bruise you had that other day from falling. You know how they say most therapists usually have their own problems as well. Pegasus has a temper, especially if he feels things are getting out of his control. I know you probably care for him and you’re thinking if you don’t love him who will, but it doesn’t have to be you, Malik. I can tell you’re a sensitive, fragile person. Pegasus needs someone who’s willing to put up with his shit and show him that how he behaves isn’t acceptable. You need someone who will support you and be there for you and love every bit of you, even those crazy ideas you get in your head” Odion watched as anxiety seemed to overcome Malik’s face.
“But how can I break up with him when I work for him? And he’ll be able to get me a good job once I graduate” Malik whispered, trying to not cry, “W…what if he hits me again?”
“Oh, Malik, you’re here finally” Pegasus said as he walked by the office.
Malik turned a bit startled, “Yeah, finally. I’m sorry for being late” he apologized again.
“It’s ok, I’d just appreciate a call…are you ok? You look like you’re about to cry” Pegasus asked concerned.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Dr. Isthar was just telling me about his sister” Malik gave an assuring smile and wiped his eyes.
“I just asked him why he chose psychology and I told him why I did” Odion told his colleague.
“Alright, well…you can finish up for Dr. Ishtar then come to my office” Pegasus smiled and went on his way.
“The important thing is that you’re happy and safe, Malik. The school can set you up with another clinic. I know you’re in love with someone else, I can see it in your eyes” Odion said in a low voice.
“Dr. Ishtar, your three o’clock is here” the secretary said over a small intercom.
“Thanks, Stephany” Odion replied, “Send them in” he added.
“I am…” Malik stood, “Odion, how can you see all this in me?” Malik asked, curious.
“You’re very expressive, Malik. Your body language, your expressions, your eyes, your tone of voice. You show exactly how you feel all the time, but you never say” Odion gave a small smile.
“Thanks, Odion” Malik picked up his book bag and looked at the doctor, giving him a small smile as well and left the office, going to Pegasus’s.
Malik put his book bag down and sat in a chair, not sure what Pegasus wanted him to do yet for that day. A moment later Pegasus walked into his office and closed his door. He walked right up to Malik and firmly put a hand on each arm rest and he leaned in angrily.
“Why were you late?” Pegasus asked, obviously trying to control his tantrum.
“I told you, I was helping a friend. He needed someone to talk to” Malik answered, a bit afraid.
“He, huh?” Pegasus raised an eyebrow.
“Pegasus, he’s just a friend. Please, you know I love you, don’t do this” Malik stood and put his arms around Pegasus’s neck, “You’re such the jealous type” Malik smiled and nuzzled his older lover’s neck.
“I know, I’m sorry, Malik. I just don’t want to lose you” Pegasus put his arms low around Malik’s waist.
Malik gave a hesitant smile, “You won’t, promise” Malik kissed his lover’s lips.
Soon it was five and Pegasus and Malik went back to Pegasus’s apartment and shared a bottle of wine and dinner, then made love several times. Malik laid awake and looked over at Pegasus sleeping. Before dinner was over, Malik had called the nurse Rick asking if he and Ryou could come to the asylum tomorrow and had promised him another ‘favor’. Malik sighed and got out of the bed and put his boxers on and went to the bathroom and sat on the lid of the toilet. //God what’s wrong with me?// he thought, burying his face in his hands. //I let two nurses have their way with me this morning, kiss Bakura and then his brother, then I come here and get fucked by a man twelve years older than me, knowing I promised the same nurse sex tomorrow just so I can see Bakura again and so Ryou can see him// Malik felt tears come to his eyes; he felt so ashamed and worthless. //God, I know something’s wrong with me. I’m not normal// Malik thought, hating himself. Malik was startled almost to death when the bathroom door opened and Pegasus stood there in his boxers.
“Malik, are you ok? I heard you crying” Pegasus asked in concern.
Malik wiped his tears, “I…I’m fine, I…just want to leave” Malik stood and walked past Pegasus to put his clothes on.
“Why? Malik, what are you not telling me?” Pegasus demanded.
“Don’t yell at me!” Malik cried, Pegasus looking almost confused.
“I’m not yelling. I’m frustrated you won’t talk to me” Pegasus ran an irritated hand through his silver hair.
Malik put his pants and shoes on, “You’ll hit me” he accused.
“I said I was sorry about that God damn it!” Pegasus shouted.
“I don’t want to be with you anymore!” Malik blurted out angrily, tears still falling from his eyes. “I don’t love you anymore, Pegasus. I want to break up. I’ll quit working at the clinic, I don’t care anymore!” Malik put his shirt on.
“You lying, ungrateful spoiled brat! God, Malik, you’re so fucked up and brainless you’ll never get your Ph. D. I was your only ticket, you won’t get anywhere” Pegasus growled.
“Shove it up your ass, Pegasus” Malik tried to say without his voice shaking as he glared at the man in front of him, his eyes bloodshot from crying.
Pegasus quickly walked over to Malik and punched him hard in the face. He then grabbed Malik’s shirt and slammed him against the wall, then slammed him again, Malik’s head hitting the wall, his ears beginning to ring and he began to see stars.
“No one says that to me, damn it! Especially in my own home!” Pegasus yelled and punched Malik’s stomach and pushed him onto the floor and began slapping and punching Malik anywhere he could for several minutes.
“Stop! Pegasus, please! Stop!” Malik cried and Pegasus stood and pulled him to his feet.
Malik could barely see straight and his head was spinning. He felt Pegasus yank him out of the room and open the front door, throwing him into the hallway and then his book bag, then slamming the door and locking it. Malik lay on the carpeted hallway floor for a long moment, his body hurting all over, his emotional state not much better. He cried, occasionally a few whimpers would escape him. No one else came into the hall to see what happened or if he was ok. He knew some people had been woken up by their fight because he seen from underneath the doors some people had turned their lights on. Malik took a deep breath and slowly picked himself off the floor and put his book bag on his shoulders. He stumbled for the elevator and felt that his lip was bleeding. Malik sniffed, trying to keep himself composed enough to get home. The elevator opened and he stepped inside and pressed the one button. Malik made his way to his car and turned the engine on, the radio coming on. //I shouldn’t have done that. Now my life is ruined. Pegasus is going to make up some kind of lie to tell the school and I won’t be able to be an intern anywhere. It could take forever for me to find another job. Everything was fine. Why did I do that? God, I’m so stupid// he thought and slowly pulled out of the parking lot, his body still shaking from the pain it felt. Malik eventually made it back to his apartment and stumbled up the stairs and opened the front door. He went to his room and let himself fall onto his bed and he hugged his pillow tightly and let the rest of his sobs out into his pillow.
“Malik?” Marik asked softly at his twin’s doorway.
“God, Marik, don’t you knock?” Malik sniffed and wiped his tears away, sitting up.
“Malik, what happened?” Marik walked over to his brother’s bed and sat down, turning the lamp beside the bed on and seeing Malik was covered with bruises. “Oh my God, Malik” Marik gasped, his expression then turning to anger.
“I…broke up with Pegasus and he…did this” Malik looked down at the floor as if it was his fault, “I’m so stupid, Marik. Now I won’t have a job. I can’t tell anyone he’ll make up some story about me like I tried to stab him or something, I don’t know” Malik covered his face as he began to cry again.
“Oh, Malik” Marik hugged his brother lightly, not wanting to hurt him more. Malik hugged Marik and cried into his chest. “At least you got rid of him. It’s going to be ok, Malik. You’ll get another job and get your Ph.D., meet some guy that’s going to make you happy. It’s not the end of the world. I know how you think” Marik chuckled and petted Malik’s hair, “You’re still only 18, you have a lot of life left to live.”
Malik felt more tears come to his eyes when his brother said that; all he could think was that Ryou was only 19 and just by catching a cold he could die, “There are two people I think I love, and I can’t have either one” Malik sat up and grabbed a tissue to blow his nose.
“Who?” Marik asked curious.
Malik sighed, “Ryou and…um, Bakura…” Malik looked at his brother to see his reaction.
“Bakura? As in the serial killer Bakura? God, Malik, how can you possibly think you love him?” Marik asked in bewilderment.
“I know he’s on the crazy side of things, but he’s more calm and normal when I’m around. He’s suffering inside and in the asylum and next week they’re going to put him in court so they can try and sentence him to execution” Malik explained, “And I can’t really be with Ryou because he’s…sick” Malik wasn’t sure if Ryou would appreciate him telling his brother about his illness.
“How is he sick?” Marik asked, wanting his twin to clarify.
Malik sighed, “He has AIDS” he knew his brother would get it out of him eventually.
“Oh my God…that’s terrible” Marik shook his head.
“Yeah, I just found out today. He told me. I know it’s hard to believe I could like both of them. I’m probably just lusting after them and I don’t know it” Malik said in a pessimistic tone.
Marik rolled his eyes and pulled Malik’s legs up on his lap and took his shoes and socks off, “Nonsense. You’re my twin, you wouldn’t just lust after somebody or people, or whatever” Marik pulled back Malik’s sheets and put Malik’s legs underneath them and pushed Malik down so he was laying on his back.
“Marik, you…” Malik began, hating when Marik teased him by babying him.
Marik put a finger over Malik’s lips, “No talking. You just forget about everything for now and get some sleep” Marik even leaned down and kissed his brother’s forehead.
“Marik, stop babying me, geez” Malik pulled his sheets up and cuddled with his pillow.
Marik smiled, “Aw, are you sure you don’t want me to stay until you fall asleep” Marik laughed as Malik hit him with a pillow.
“Get out. Thanks for making me feel better” Malik laughed and Marik went to the door.
“Sure” Marik smiled and closed the door.
Malik rolled his eyes and fell back onto his bed and once again cuddled his pillow and tried to fall asleep.
After classes Malik found Ryou on the same bench and sat next to him, the white-haired teen reading his English book.
“Hey” Malik gave a small smile.
Ryou looked up from his book and his eyes widened, “Oh my God, Malik, what happened to you? Did someone beat you?” he asked in concern.
“Yeah…my boyfriend. I broke up with him and he went psycho on me” Malik chuckled and shook his head, “Don’t worry about it, though. I got an appointment for us to see Bakura today. We should get going now since it’s a long drive” Malik stood again and waited for Ryou.
Ryou stood as well, gathering his things, “Well, at least you did break up with him. I just can’t believe he’d do that to you” Ryou sniffed and put his book bag on as the two began to walk.
“Have a cold?” Malik asked, hearing Ryou sniff.
“I don’t think so, but you know how this fall weather is, I should probably start staying indoors again so I don’t get sick” Ryou sighed.
“Yeah” Malik agreed and the two reached his car.
About 50 minutes later Malik parked in the parking lot of the asylum and the two went inside where Rick was at the front desk at the moment.
“Hey, Rick” Malik said in a tired voice.
The Latin man looked up, “Whoa, Malik, bar fight or something?” he chuckled and walked around the counter.
“Yeah, it was crazy. Guess I should start working out or something” Malik chuckled, “This is Ryou, Bakura’s brother” he introduced.
“Wow, looks just like him. Follow me” Rick said and the two walked behind him and to Bakura’s room where he lay still tied down.
“You can’t be in there for like an hour or something, but you have more than twenty minutes” Rick assured and opened the door and let the two go in and then closed the door back and stood in the hallway.
Ryou already had tears filling his eyes as he looked at his brother and his condition. Bakura was now hooked up to an I.V. and was being fed through a tube; apparently he wasn’t eating on his own. Bakura’s eyes appeared teary and Ryou stood by his side and he only continued to stare up at the ceiling.
“Bakura, it’s me, Malik. I brought your brother, Ryou” Malik said in a low, calm voice.
Bakura’s eyes moved to look at Ryou and teared up more, “Ryou…” he said barely above a whisper, his voice horse and shaky.
“Hey, Bakura” Ryou gave a small smile, one of his tears falling onto the bed, “I…I’m sorry I didn’t come see you sooner” Ryou sniffed and petted his brother’s hair; it was now obvious they had Bakura pumped full of drugs to keep him calm and stable.
Bakura sniffed as he cried, feeling he didn’t even have the strength to pull on his restraints any more; he just wanted to hug his brother so badly, “Why…where did you go?” Bakura asked.
Ryou held one of Bakura’s hands, “I wanted to come back for you, but I was so scared. They thought I died and put me in a dumpster. Not a day went by that I didn’t think of you. I’ve missed you so much” Ryou’s voice cracked as he tried to keep his tears back.
Ryou laid his head on Bakura’s chest and hugged his body the best he could. Malik bit his lower lip and began undoing the buckles of the leather straps holding Bakura down.
“Malik…?” Ryou looked confused.
“It’s only right” Malik went to Bakura’s ankles and undid them.
Ryou sat up and undid the buckles holding Bakura’s torso down. They helped Bakura to his feet and Ryou embraced his twin, squeezing him tightly. Bakura put his arms around his brother and nuzzled his neck, smelling his hair.
“We’re going to get you out of here. You’ll stay with me and together we’ll both have normal, happy lives” Ryou said as he stayed glued to his brother.
Bakura’s hands clutched Ryou’s shirt tightly and then suddenly he pushed Ryou away, “No…” he shook his head, both Ryou and Malik starring at him puzzled by his behavior. “NO!” Bakura wailed and ripped the I.V. and the feeding tube from his body, almost falling over and he grabbed onto the bed, weak from the drugs.
Rick rushed into the room once he heard Bakura scream, “What the fuck?!” he cursed, seeing Bakura free from his restraints.
“You left me! Why aren’t you like me!” Bakura screamed as he cried, only hate and sadness in his eyes as he looked at his twin as he tried to fight Rick, a few other nurses rushing into the room and shoving Ryou and Malik out. “No! Let me go! God, stop!” Bakura wailed as he was forced back on the bed and the nurses quickly began to strap him back down.
The two stood horrified as Bakura just began to scream and sob at the top of his lungs, straining and pulling to be free. It only reminded him of what his parents use to do to him and he suffered from flashbacks all the time of the memories. Ryou covered his ears, not wanting to hear his brother suffer.
“I have to leave” Ryou shook his head and began running down the hallway, Malik going after him.
“Ryou, wait!” Malik called and caught up with Ryou outside.
“He hates me, Malik” Ryou cried, “He really is crazy. Why am I not like him? We use to always…find hope in each other” Ryou covered his face as he cried.
“Hey!” the head nurse ran up to the two. “I could have you both arrested for what you did. Don’t either one of you ever come back here again” he growled in warning and looked at Malik, “And thanks to you Rick will be fired. You are one messed up, perverted, sick kid and you should probably check yourself into this place if you knew what was best for you” he shook his head and walked back to the institution.
Malik glared at the man with tears in his eyes, almost wishing he had a knife to throw at the nurse’s turned back. “I’m sorry for bringing you here, Ryou. I didn’t know he’d freak out like that. I guess we shouldn’t have let him out of the restraints. I just thought he’d want to hug you back” Malik ran a stressed hand through his hair.
“No, it’s ok” Ryou assured and wiped his eyes, “God I hate my life” he sniffed.
“Don’t say that, Ryou. Come on, let’s just go” Malik sighed and the two walked to his car.
The two rode in silence and Malik pulled into the parking lot of Ryou’s apartment building and turned his car off. Even though it was the afternoon it looked later in the day since it was cloudy; it was suppose to rain again.
“Do you want to stay a while?” Ryou offered, feeling like he should ask.
“Sure” Malik shrugged and the two went up to the apartment, Mokuba gone still.
Malik sat on the couch and Ryou began to pull his homework out of his book bag, “Do you ever think about suicide?” Malik asked, breaking the silence.
“Sometimes” Ryou answered honestly and opened his math book.
“How would you do it?” Malik asked curious.
Ryou looked up at Malik, “I guess slitting my wrists or a gun or something. Drowning myself in the tub maybe…why?”
“I think a gun would be best. It’s quick, painless, and you’re pretty sure it’d work” Malik sighed, “I don’t like my life, either.”
Ryou was a bit afraid of where this conversation might be going, “Well…I don’t plan on killing myself, even if I think about it. I figure I’ll die soon enough, anyway.”
“I won’t…” Malik looked at Ryou. “I wasn’t always this way. Depressed, you know? It actually started about a year ago. Maybe I’m just stressed, I don’t know. There was my senior year, pressures to go to college, graduation, college. Moving out, my grandpa dying, Pegasus, your brother, you…” Malik felt tears sting his eyes, “And I guess it kind of all just overwhelms me a bit.”
Ryou moved to sit next to Malik, “I know it all seems pointless and hopeless sometimes…I like you Malik, I don’t want to read in the paper some day that you killed yourself. You’re a good friend. I feel like I can trust you and I wish we had become friends sooner.”
“I feel so stupid right now…today, Bakura didn’t even seem to notice me…he didn’t even see that I had bruises all over me. All this time I was thinking he was just hurt and needed someone to care for him, but…he is crazy, and nothing can change that” Malik looked down ashamed, “And lately everyone’s telling me I am too and now I’m wondering if I am.”
Ryou put an arm around Malik’s shoulders, “You’re not crazy. Everyone gets this way they just don’t admit it. Everyone’s life is hard on some level, even the rich people have problems. People always tell me things will get better and I just look at them like they’re idiots” Ryou smiled when Malik chuckled slightly, “I am trying to put my past behind me. Bakura…he can’t do that. His mind is stuck and being tortured daily. I hate to say this but…maybe he should be put to rest. I love my brother very much and if he’s not going to get better, instead of rotting in that hospital, he should be free from this life, don’t you think?” Ryou asked softly.
“I guess…” Malik looked at Ryou, “Do you think I’m stupid for thinking I loved him?” he asked.
“No, I think you just misunderstood your feelings for him. You care for him is all. I think you’re stupid for thinking you love me, though” Ryou answered, knowing the last part took Malik by surprise. “I can see it in your eyes” he explained.
“Just because you’re sick I can’t love you?” Malik asked, both hearing a loud thunder as it began to lightly rain.
“Yes. It’s stupid, Malik. I can’t give you everything you need. I wouldn’t do that. I hate to be blunt, but I also think you fall way to easily for people and you just think you love me” Ryou answered.
“Yeah…I think both me and my brother do that…” Malik said in a low voice and stood to leave.
“You don’t have to go” Ryou stood as well, “I didn’t mean to make you upset.”
“I need to get my homework done anyway” Malik shrugged, “See you tomorrow?”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow” Ryou watched as Malik left his apartment.
