A Christmas to Remember
Chapter 8
@-->-->----
When Kaiba re-entered the ballroom, he was greeted with a sight that made him pause for a moment to take it in and store it in his memory.
Mokuba had gathered the others around the largest of the Christmas trees in the ballroom, a massive 10 foot fir decorated with red and gold tinsel, baubles and bows. He had also brought out the presents and stacked them beneath the tree. The pile of brightly wrapped gifts added the perfect finishing touch to the happy scene. Everyone was talking and laughing, obviously enjoying themselves.
Everyone except Joey.
Kaiba watched the blonde boy for a minute, frowning uneasily as he took in the dejected slump of the teen's shoulders and the way he seemed to be distant from the others, even though Yugi was standing right beside him. Joey was looking at the Christmas tree, but Kaiba got the impression that his mind was much further away. Remembering what Mokuba had said to him earlier, Kaiba guiltily realised that he had been avoiding the blonde since he had escorted him to the guestroom. He hadn't even asked him if he was feeling any better.
Determination flooded through him and he made his way over to the others. Although he smiled and nodded in response to their greetings, he didn't stop until he stood just behind Joey. "I trust you are none the worse for your little misadventure earlier?" His voice was low and a little huskier than he would have liked, but that sort of thing was to be expected when you were facing an unexpected rush of arousal. At least it hadn't reached the awkward stage.
Joey turned and smiled at Kaiba. It wasn't his bright, happy smile, but rather a small, somewhat nervous curve of his lips.
Kaiba shifted his stance as his arousal promptly reached the awkward stage and went right past it, almost to the point of embarrassment. He was so busy trying to calm his racing pulse that he almost missed the blonde's soft reply.
"I didn't think ya cared."
Kaiba's eyes shot to Joey's. Normally, he would have taken the words as a challenge, but the way they were spoken, coupled with what Mokuba had told him earlier, made him look at them in another light. Instead of replying sharply, his voice was also soft. Intimate. "I do."
Joey stared at him. He seemed about to say something when Tristan's cheerful voice broke in, reminding both teens of where they were and what they were supposed to be doing. "Hey! Are we getting presents or what?"
Téa nudged him, hard. "Tristan! Don't be so rude!"
"What? Kaiba's just standing there, staring at Joey. At this rate we'll be here until Christmas!" Tristan grinned, then yelped as an irritated blonde suddenly leaped on top of him, knocking him to the ground.
"What do ya mean he was starin' at me? Huh? He was asking how I was, ya doofus." Joey got Tristan into a headlock that soon had the brunette begging for mercy.
Kaiba looked around, mildly surprised to see that none of the others were taking any notice of the commotion. Shrugging it off as just one of the many things that he would never understand about this somewhat insane group of people who had claimed him as a friend, Kaiba looked over at his obviously excited little brother. "Mokuba, if you can stop bouncing for a minute, will you do the honours?"
Mokuba grinned and nodded eagerly, then plopped down on the floor beside the tree and started handing out the gifts.
"Téa! This is for you. I hope it's the right one. Blame Mai if it isn't, 'cause she was the one who told me what your favourite flower was." Mokuba covered his ears as Téa squealed loudly upon opening her present of perfume and various bath and soap things that females usually squealed loudly over upon receiving. "Oh good, we got the right one." He took up the next gift.
"Tristan... uh... Joey, can you let him go so he can get his present? Thanks! Here you go Tristan! I hope you like it. Ryou, here's yours and oh, here's Baku...ra's." Mokuba blinked as a white-haired whirlwind moved in and took the present out of his hands before he could finish saying the yami's name. "Eager, isn't he?" He laughed as Ryou blushed and apologised for his darker half's rudeness. "It's Christmas, eagerness is allowed. I just hope he likes it as much as he seems to think he will."
Kaiba eyed Bakura in amusement as the ancient Egyptian spirit tore open his gift and began to do a very un-ancient Egyptian little dance. "I believe he does."
Mokuba laughed and handed Mai her present, then Yugi and Yami. That left only one present under the tree, and two people who had yet to receive a gift.
The happy atmosphere suddenly went still and rather cold as everyone fell silent. Joey looked away, his face going red. Kaiba sighed. "Honestly, I know you all believe me capable of embarrassing Wheeler by having him be the only one not to get a gift, but do you really believe Mokuba capable of it as well?" As the others stared at him in confusion, the brunette ignored them. All of his attention was focused on the wide brown eyes now staring at him, alight with sudden hope.
Mokuba nodded and smiled as he held the gift up. Kaiba reached past Joey and took it, then presented it to the blonde. "Merry Christmas, Joey. It isn't much but I hope you like it."
Joey hesitantly accepted the gift, glancing down at it briefly before looking up at Kaiba again. "Thank you. I... I'm sorry I thought..." He looked down at the gift again, his bright red cheeks attesting to the fact that it was his embarrassment that made it too difficult for him to speak.
"I know. I honestly cannot blame you for that. Considering the way I treat you... I am surprised that you have not given up on me by now." Kaiba had a feeling that it was a hard call as to which of them, he or Wheeler, was more surprised by his words. He hadn't meant to say them, they had just emerged without conscious thought on his part. But... he would not take them back even if he could. They felt right and they were completely true.
Joey's blush deepened. He lifted his head again, his eyes locking with Kaiba's. "I..."
"Will you two go get a room already?" Duke grinned as two pairs of eyes glared at him fiercely. "Don't look at me like that. I don't want to ruin the moment; I just want to know where my present is! You promised me one, Kaiba. You said when I delivered mine to you at your office that you had one for me, remember? So where is it? Come on, hand it over." His eyes twinkled.
Kaiba smirked at him. "So I did. Do not worry, Devlin, I have not forgotten you. It was just that Mokuba put out the presents and he was unable to bring it in on his own. I will go and get it now." He glanced at the blonde beside him, his eyes promising a return to the conversation at a later time, then went out of the room to retrieve Devlin's very special gift.
Devlin looked rather worried. "I hope he hasn't decided to take revenge on me for the pudding."
Mokuba giggled and stroked the purring kitten curled up on the floor beside him. "You'll see."
The first thing they saw was the basket. Even larger than the one Duke had given Kaiba, it had to be wheeled in on a small trolley. Duke went pale at the sight of it. "Uh oh. My pudding sense is tingling."
Tristan arched an eyebrow at his lover. "You have a pudding sense? Since when?"
"Since I found 173 pounds of pudding in my driveway. I haven't been able to get near pudding since without getting a headache." Duke eyed the basket warily as Kaiba pushed it over to him.
"Your 'pudding sense' is defective, then. I assure you, Devlin, there is no pudding in this basket." Kaiba's smirk didn't seem to reassure the dark-haired dice master at all.
Devlin bit his lip and cautiously untied the ribbon holding the cellophane wrapping closed. It opened to reveal a basket filled with canned goods. The teen went several shades paler still. "Canned... turkey." He turned to Tristan, looking like a little boy who had just received a pair of socks instead of a much-wanted teddy bear. "He's given me canned turkey. There must be at least two dozen here." Tristan nodded and gave his lover a sympathetic hug.
"Thirty." Kaiba's serene smile made Yugi, Ryou and Téa edge away from him. "Thirty pounds of canned turkey, in revenge for the thirty pounds of pudding you gave me."
Duke pouted at the smug brunette. "At least I gave you a heap of other stuff as well. Good stuff too. I could have used it with Tristan instead."
Kaiba shuddered. "A mental image I could well have gone without." His eyes gleamed. "Have a look at the top can. There is something taped to it."
Duke poked at the white envelope. "A Christmas card. Let me guess, it has a picture of a turkey on it."
"Not quite." Kaiba's smile was less scary and more genuine now. "That envelope contains a contract."
Duke went still. Slowly, his head turned until he was staring at Kaiba. "A contract?"
Kaiba nodded. "You mentioned at your party last week that you were having trouble with one of your suppliers. You said your orders were always overdue, he was overcharging you and he continually shorted you on your orders."
Duke nodded. "That's right. I'd take my business elsewhere except he's the only one who can supply the dice needed for my game. There are so many different kinds that it's impossible to find anyone else willing to make them all."
"Until now." Kaiba nodded at the envelope. "You may not be aware of it, but Kaiba Corp. has a manufacturing plant. We make most of the parts for the Duel Disk systems, as well as the other game items we produce. Some of them are dice games."
Duke seemed to be having a little trouble breathing. He swayed on his feet and Tristan quickly steadied him. "Kaiba... are you saying that Kaiba Corp. will become my supplier for the dice?"
Kaiba nodded. "We will need examples of each of the dice you require, so moulds can be made. It will take a month or two before manufacturing can begin, because of that, however once that is out of the way, we will be able to produce your dice far more efficiently than..." He gave up trying to finish what he was saying. There wasn't any point. The one he was speaking to was too busy laughing, cheering and dancing around with his lover to listen to him.
@-->-->----
Although the others left not long after that, Duke remained behind for another hour, going over the contract with Kaiba so production of the moulds could begin as soon as possible.
It would have taken less time, but Duke kept stopping to snicker in sheer delight at the thought of being able to tell his current supplier just where he could shove his late deliveries of overpriced dice.
Eventually though, all of the details were sorted out to both Duke and Kaiba's satisfaction and the contract was signed and sealed. Kaiba walked the other boy to the front door, then stood with him in the foyer for a minute. He shook Duke's hand and smiled at him. "Merry Christmas, Devlin."
Duke grinned back at him. "Merry Christmas, Kaiba. Thanks for this. You know, if you hadn't given me all that turkey as well, I might, just might, have felt a little guilty over giving you all that pudding."
Kaiba smiled. "No need. I found quite a good use for it." At Devlin's arched eyebrow of inquiry, he elaborated. "I gave it out to my heads of staff as part of their Christmas bonuses. Their reactions were rather amusing."
Duke laughed as he reached for the door. "I had the same thing with all the business people at my party. Some of their expressions when they realised what I'd given them were priceless!"
Smirking, Kaiba shook his head. "Just hope that they think you meant it as a thoughtful gesture and do not realise that you meant to annoy them. Ah!" He winced as he felt something sting him on the back of his neck.
He was reaching his hand up to see what it had been when the room began to spin around him and his eyesight began to go hazy. Kaiba tried to cry out, but his voice would not obey him. He heard Devlin's voice calling his name, but it was very faint and seemed to come from a long way away. He felt his legs go numb, then everything went black.
Kaiba fell into an empty void of darkness that seemed to close around him, swallowing him.
@-->-->----
That was the last thing he remembered before waking up to find himself trapped in a small space.
Groaning softly, Kaiba rested his head against the wall behind him and tried to work out what had happened to him.
The likeliest possibility was that he had been hit with a knockout dart, which would have rendered him unconscious for several hours. The darts were harmless and far more effective than bullets for capturing intruders for later interrogation. Each of the security guards who patroled his estate carried one, and he also had one in his study. But that meant that this had been done by one of his own men.
Kaiba's jaw tensed at the thought of such a betrayal and his mind began working on what he'd do to whoever had done this to him.
He had just reached the conclusion that he had the resources to make boiling in oil a possibility when he realised that something had changed. He could now see his hand in front of his face. Looking around, Kaiba saw that daylight was coming through a series of small holes around the top of his prison. His heart leaped at the discovery and then leaped again when he heard a sound outside. "Is someone there? Let me out!"
Much to Kaiba's astonishment, the response to his calling was a very familiar giggle.
"Mokuba? Is that you? I cannot get out. Help me."
"Seto..." His little brother's voice had never been so welcomed. "I'm sorry, but I can't do that."
Kaiba froze, his mind filling with all sorts of thoughts, most of which he discarded again immediately. "What?" Surely he had misheard. Or perhaps his little brother was being held hostage. His mind helpfully supplied him with an image of Mokuba bound to a chair and left ungagged solely so he could torture his brother with that infernal giggle. "Mokuba! Let me out this instant!"
Mokuba giggled again. "I'm sorry big brother but the tag clearly says, 'do not open until Christmas'!"
