Say it with Plushies
Chapter 7
@-->-->----
Joey watched the tall brunette as he made his way towards the lockers, the bustling crowd moving out of his way as if there was an invisible forcefield around him. Considering how advanced Kaiba Corp.'s technology was, it wouldn't have surprised him if that were true. He noted the way Kaiba moved, graceful as a stalking tiger, and was more than a little surprised that he didn't feel like prey. He'd felt hunted by the brunette in the past, but as he watched the other teen approach him... at that moment all Joey felt was an odd fluttery feeling in his stomach and an even odder heat in his lower body. He quickly ignored the feelings and focused on Kaiba.
"Mornin'. Got somethin' for me?" As the other boy came nearer, Joey recognised the gleam in his sapphire eyes and couldn't help but grin as anticipation flooded through him. That look told him the message was a good one.
Kaiba smirked as he stopped just in front of the grinning blonde. He handed over the box. "I think you'll get it."
As he watched the brunette stride away, Joey's grin became a somewhat dreamy smile. "Man... I'd sure like to." Then Kaiba went out of sight and Joey snapped back to reality. He looked at the box and eagerly turned to his locker so he could open it without anyone seeing.
The chatterteeth had returned. As saw as he saw them clamped to the ass of the small toy dog, Joey grinned. The two little red warning flags in the plushie's hands made him laugh so hard he had to lean against his locker for support.
"So I should be careful because ya bite, huh Kaiba?" Joey smirked. "That's funny I could have sworn..."
He started laughing again as he thought of the perfect comeback.

Joey paused as soon as he caught sight of Kaiba, his eyes eagerly running over the figure of the other teen. He frowned as he noticed the tension in the brunette's stance and the way he was restlessly pacing to and fro. For the second time that day, Joey was reminded of a tiger. This time though, he thought of a captive tiger pacing in a cage. He found himself hurrying over to Kaiba before he had even thought of what to say.
"Kaiba! What's wrong?"
The brunette whirled, glaring. "That is none of your concern." His voice was cold, but there was something in his eyes...
Joey frowned. "Don't be such a jerk, Kaiba. It's just a bit of friendly concern. Can't ya just accept it for once?"
Kaiba sneered. "Friendly? Since when have you and I been friends?"
"You're right. We're not. Sorry I bothered ya." Joey turned and started towards his locker, trying his hardest not to let on that Kaiba's words had cut deep. He also silently told himself off for daring to think that the game they'd been playing had brought them closer. Of course it hadn't. It was just a stupid, pathetic game.
A hand reached out and grabbed his shoulder, pulling him around before Joey could do more than gasp in shock. He looked into Kaiba's glaring sapphire eyes and shook his head. "You made your point, Kaiba."
"A take-over that I had thought was running smoothly has run into a few problems. I received a call about it during my last class." Kaiba was still glaring, and his voice was a low and angry growl.
Kaiba had not only admitted that something was wrong, but had said what it was. Joey couldn't have been more surprised if the brunette had suddenly stripped naked and started dancing the tango with a purple gorilla in a top hat and plaid miniskirt, while singing 'I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts'. It took him a few moments to get over his shock enough for his mind to start working again.
"So I guess that means you'll be working this weekend instead of duelling in the tournament that's being held, huh?" Joey was disappointed. He'd been looking forward to seeing Kaiba and maybe even getting to duel against him.
"No." Kaiba's glare eased until he was merely frowning a little. "My people are working on the problem. That is what I pay them to do. If the situation worsens, I may need to deal with it myself. That would be next week though."
Joey grinned. "Cool. So I'll be seein' ya in the tournament then."
"I had intended on participating, but now that I know they are allowing third-rate duellists like *you* to enter... I may not bother." Kaiba shook his head, his frown changing to a look of mild disgust.
The blonde teen's grin became a smirk. "Afraid I'll beat ya, huh Kaiba?"
Sapphire eyes narrowed and glared at the smirking boy. "For that remark, I will take the utmost pleasure in defeating you. It will be such an easy duel, I doubt that I will even require my Blue Eyes White Dragon cards."
Joey's smirk widened. "Good. I'll look forward to makin' ya eat those words."
Satisfied that Kaiba was no longer as worked up as he had been, Joey turned to his locker and started gathering his books, ready to pack them in his bag and head off for the weekend. He felt the brunette watching him and grinned. "If ya want the next message, the box is in my bag." Joey grunted as one of his schoolbooks tried to fall off the pile in his arms. "I'd get it for ya but my hands are kinda full right... whoa!"
The pile of books started to topple, then stopped. Joey stared in surprise at the hand that was holding them in place. His gaze travelled up the hand to the arm, then up the arm to Kaiba's scowling face. "Uh... thanks."
"Try taking only a few at a time. Idiot." Despite his growled words though, Kaiba held on to the books until Joey had put them safely on the ground.
Pulling the box out of his schoolbag, Joey handed it to Kaiba with a grin. "There ya go." His brown eyes twinkled with wicked amusement. "You won't need an explanation for it."
Kaiba eyed him for a moment, a light frown creasing his brow. "Very well." Without another word, the brunette turned and strode back to his own locker, the box under his arm.
Joey shook his head and smiled wryly as he watched the other teen pick up his briefcase and head off down the hall. "Have a good weekend, Kaiba. Hope ya like the message." Snickering to himself, Joey started packing his books into his bag.

As soon as Kaiba was in his limousine, he opened the box. His eyebrows raised when he saw the simple, yet effective, message waiting for him. Then his lips curved slowly into a smile.
There was only one item in with the plushie... An ordinary drinking straw. A very common item that usually wasn't all that important, and yet it made Wheeler's point perfectly.
"My last message was 'careful, I bite'. So he's responded with 'no, you suck'. Oh yes, very original, Wheeler." Kaiba leaned back in his seat and was not too surprised when he started chuckling a few moments later.

Joey wasn't surprised to see Kaiba waiting for him at the lockers on Monday morning. What surprised him was that the brunette had managed to restrain himself over the weekend. Not only had they faced each other in the Duel Monsters tournament, with Kaiba barely managing to win despite calling out all three of his Blue Eyes White Dragons and fusing them into Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, but they'd run into each other six times outside of the tournament. If he hadn't known better, Joey would have thought Kaiba had arranged the meetings deliberately.
He grinned as he approached the older teen. "Let me guess, ya got somethin' for me, right?"
Kaiba gave him an oddly inscrutable look and, for the first time since Joey had known him, hesitated in his reply. "I... Yes." He looked away quickly, picking up the box from where it sat on top of his briefcase. But then he just held it, staring down at it as if the cardboard shoebox contained the answers to every question in the world.
"Ya gonna give that to me or should I just leave you two alone?" Joey was surprised when Kaiba jerked and looked up, the question obviously startling him out of his thoughts. For a split second, his sapphire eyes were wide and unusually expressive, then his regular cold mask fell back into place.
Without a word, Kaiba pushed the box into the blonde's hands and strode off down the hallway. Joey watched him leave as he always did, but this time his thoughts were on the confusion and vulnerability he had glimpsed in the sapphire eyes rather than his admiration for Kaiba's ass.
Joey eyed the box in his hands for a minute, considering. There were too many people around, but he couldn't wait to see what had Kaiba so worked up and there were still a few minutes to go before the bell. Opening his locker, he used it as cover to sneak a peek into the box. "What the...?"
There was no plushie. No Kaiba plushie anyway. Instead, there were two small dogs, the same as the one from the 'doggy style' message. They were tied together with a Duel Monsters card sandwiched between them. As Joey pulled the card free, a piece of paper came out with it. He glanced at the paper, frowning in confusion. It held an address he didn't recognise as well as the words '7pm Friday. If you dare.' Hoping that the card would explain more, he turned it over.
Joey's loud curse caused quite a few heads to turn in his direction. More than one student laughed but the blonde teen was in no state to notice. He was too preoccupied with staring at the card in shocked disbelief.

It took him a while to notice the envelope that had been pushed through the slits on his locker door. The note it held was short and to the point.
'Wheeler - owing to the business matter I mentioned last Friday, I will be absent from school for the rest of the week. I will be back in time to see if you accept my dare or not.'
"I can't believe he did this! That arrogant jerk!" Joey glared at the note as he muttered to himself, not caring about the odd looks he was getting from everyone in the area. "First he gives me that message and then he makes it so I can't even talk to him about it! Man! He really burns me up sometimes!" He started to scrunch the note up but suddenly paused as he thought of something that immediately cooled off his temper.
"Still... He left me a note about it. That's gotta count for somethin', right?"
Joey slowly slipped the note inside the box, then put the box into his schoolbag. He was still looking thoughtful as he headed off to his first class of the day.
