Chapter 7

Joey yawned and snuggled a little closer to Kaiba as the car drove them both towards Certain Doom - aka the Domino City Department Store. "Man, I'm tired."
Seto hugged the blonde a little more tightly and nodded. "As am I. At least today is Christmas Eve. We just have to get through today and tomorrow and it will all be over for another year."
"Keep tellin' me that. Once every ten minutes should just about do it." Joey smiled weakly and rested his head on Kaiba's shoulder. "We still have most of the shoppin' to do, this mornin' and then this afternoon it's dinner and gifts at Yug's."
He moved his head just enough to allow him to see his pillow's face. "Speakin' of... how come you're goin' there this year? Don't ya usually say no to invites to parties and stuff from the gang?"
A pained expression crossed Seto's face. "Normally, yes. Parties with them have a tendency to be very similar each time for me. Yami usually challenges me at least once and we duel until Yugi stops us. Téa tends to lecture me about the importance of friendship whenever she gets the chance. Mai is an outrageous flirt when she has a little too much to drink. Tristan always says at least one comment that insults me and Devlin has a bad habit of winking and making sly comments about him being bigger than me in the way that counts the most. You and I usually spend most of the party arguing... which is the only good thing about it." Seto scowled.
Joey arched an eyebrow. "So ya do enjoy arguing with me. I always thought so." He grinned. "I like it too."
"Good. Hopefully we shall have many more arguments in the future." Seto frowned. "That... did not come out quite as I intended."
"I know what you meant." Joey snuggled into Kaiba a bit more. "So if parties are so bad, how come you're going to this one?"
Seto winced. "Mokuba."
Joey grinned. "He wants to go huh? Sweet kid."
"Not exactly." Seto sighed. "He is insisting because our staff have Christmas off. Including our chef. My charming little brother insists that going to Yugi's will be the only way we will get a decent Christmas dinner. He claims it will be better to have a good meal a day early than none at all."
Lifting his head off Kaiba's shoulder so he could get a proper look at him, Joey stared in shock. "Ya mean... what Mokuba told me this mornin' was true?"
"That would depend on what he told you. My little brother and truth are not always entirely compatible." Seto smiled wryly, but the look on Joey's face worried him. Surely Mokuba hadn't told him about...
Joey nodded. "He said that last year's Christmas dinner was a flamin' chicken that had to be put out with a fire extinguisher. He also mentioned something about explodin' chestnuts."
Mokuba had told him about the chicken. Seto sighed. "It was not the disaster Mokuba makes it out to be. The chicken merely suffered a little accident when it was placed too near the candle centrepiece."
Joey looked at Kaiba. "Uh huh. So what happened with the chestnuts?"
"Mokuba wished to roast them. He told me that they were supposed to be scored on one side to prevent explosion." Seto sighed heavily. "Unfortunately... he told me after they had started exploding."
"Ouch." Joey winced in sympathy.
Seto nodded in agreement, wincing as well. He looked out of the window as the car slowed down. "We are there."
Joey groaned and reluctantly sat up properly for the first time since leaving the Kaiba estate. "You realise we both qualify as being completely insane for goin' shoppin' on Christmas Eve, right?"
His comment earned a chuckle from an amused brunette. "At least this time we have a list of what we need to get. That should simplify matters." He arched an eyebrow as Wheeler shook his head. "No?"
"Maybe if we'd put actual items on the list. But writin' general ideas like we did will just take us to the right departments. We'll still have to look around when we get there." Joey sighed.
Seto frowned and nodded slowly. "I see your point. At least we were able to narrow the choice down in Mokuba's case."
"Yeah." Joey grinned. "Leavin' that toy catalogue out where he could find it was a good idea. Puttin' a pen beside it was inspired."
"I rather liked the excuse you gave Mokuba, when he'd asked what we had been doing in my bedroom for the hour we were working on the list, this morning." Seto smiled. "Although, I believe I would have enjoyed it more if we really had spent that time kissing."
Joey nodded. "Me too. I'm just glad it worked. After what he saw when he woke us up, I guess it was pretty believable that we'd be doin' somethin' like that."
The blonde teen winced as he remembered how Mokuba had jumped on top of them without any warning while they'd been asleep - curled up together beneath the sheets. Since they'd both been naked at the time, they hadn't been able to get up until he'd gone and Seto had needed to do some fast talking to get Mokuba to leave the room ahead of them. "Does he ever knock?"
Seto sighed. "It depends on whether or not he feels in the mood to pounce on an unsuspecting victim." He shook his head at Wheeler's snicker. "As for this morning, my concern is just how far out of proportion he will take it when he tells your friends about what he 'interrupted'."
That stopped Joey's amusement in its tracks. "He wouldn't." He looked at Seto and sighed heavily. "What am I sayin'? Of course he would. We're gonna be hearin' about this one for a while."
"Undoubtably." Seto smiled a little. "But at least Mokuba accepts that side of our relationship." He got out of the car.
"Yeah. We're all set for when we actually start doin' the stuff he thinks we're already doin'." Grinning, Joey joined Seto and together they headed for the large glass doors at the front of the department store.
Joey frowned as they approached the entrance. The store lights were on but the store looked empty and the people who were approaching the door were going away again - shaking their heads and looking frustrated and anxious.
There was a sign taped to the door. As they drew closer, Joey was able to make out the words - which caused him to swear under his breath. "The store's shut until noon! Oh man, how bad can our luck get? We'll have to go somewhere else. Restockin'? In the middle of the day?" He scowled at the sign, then looked at Kaiba. "You really need to write to the manager of this place."
Seto smiled slightly. "I already did." He nodded to the man approaching the doors on the inside. "I believe that is him coming now, actually. Come along."
"Huh?" Joey followed Kaiba to the door and watched in growing confusion as the man inside unlocked the door, then opened it and quickly ushered them inside. "Kaiba? What's goin' on?" he muttered as he followed the brunette inside.
Seto merely smiled.
"Mr Kaiba, I am Mr Browning, the manager here. I do apologise for all the inconvenience you experienced during your previous visit and I sincerely hope that this will make up for it... in some small way." The small, thin, balding man rubbed his hands together and smiled at Seto.
The brunette teen fought back the mental image of the man as a ferret and smiled - even though he wanted to cringe at how obviously ingratiating the man was. He nodded. "It will indeed. I believe my company and your store will continue to have a long and mutually profitable relationship."
As the manager began to waste some of their precious shopping time with his babbling gratitude, Seto interrupted him with a smile and a nod. "It is fine. I appreciate your allowing us this time to shop in peace. After what we endured last time..."
Mr Browning looked terrified and quickly nodded. "Oh no, it is no trouble at all! I hope you enjoy your shopping experience today and if you need any assistance at all, please do not hesitate to ask any of the staff here. They will all be more than happy to oblige you." He gave a nervous little nod and hurried away - obviously afraid that Seto Kaiba was going to list the complaints in person as he had listed them in his letter.
Seto watched the man go for a moment and revised his opinion of him. He was more of a mouse than a ferret. Hearing a snicker behind him, he fought back his own smile and spoke softly over his shoulder. "It is just past nine, so we have almost three hours. Shall we get this shopping dealt with, Wheeler?"
"Kaiba... if we weren't in public right now, I'd show ya just how happy I am that we don't have to go through what I thought we would." Wheeler's purring voice in his ear sent a pleasurable shiver down Seto's spine.
"My only regret is that I did not think of it earlier," Seto replied just as softly as they headed for the trolleys. "We could have saved ourselves so much trouble. Although, if we had not come here that first night, I would not have had the leverage I needed to make him suggest this." He smiled a little at the chuckle from behind him and looked at Wheeler over his shoulder. "Now then... what do we need to get first?"
Joey held up their master shopping list and grinned. "Well that depends. Do ya wanna go through this store from top to bottom or bottom to top?"
"I have always been rather fond of... bottoms... although I have no objection to tops on occasion." His eyes gleamed and from the matching gleam in Wheeler's eyes, he knew his message had been received and understood.
"The perfume and jewellery departments are on this floor. How about we take care of Mai's present first? We might find somethin' for Téa too." Joey looked at the list and frowned. "We should be able to get everything here, except... I'm not sure a place this classy will have any 'I love myself' tees for Devlin."
Seto nodded. "Well, that was just an idea. He spends so much time strutting around with his chest out that I thought he might like to have a reason for people to look more closely at it."

Three hours later - two very tired, but very satisfied, teenagers cuddled together in the car as they headed back to the Kaiba estate. Joey looked at the large green basket of red and gold bows on the seat beside him and shook his head in amusement. "I still think ya went a bit overboard on gettin' all of these. I know we bought a lot of stuff... but I'm pretty sure we won't need so many. There's gotta be at least four dozen bows here." He shifted a little so he could study them more intently.
Seto arched an eyebrow. "Five dozen, actually. I wanted to make sure we had enough. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of wrapping and running out of bows, ribbon, tape or paper." He shuddered at the thought. "Especially when there is a raven-haired imp more than ready to slip into the room and perform a thorough gift inspection the moment we go and get more wrapping materials." A small smile tilted his lips. "Once we are in the dining room, I will be locking the doors and we will not be having so much as a bathroom break until everything is wrapped."
Chuckling, Joey nodded. "Well that explains the pack of twenty rolls of tape I saw ya get. Sounds like this afternoon's gonna be fun. Thanks for lettin' me be a part of it," he added, looking at Kaiba with a look as shy as he ever got.
"I have a mountain of gifts and you volunteered to help me wrap them. I believe I should be the one thanking you." Seto smiled wryly, but the tender look he gave the blonde teen snuggled into his side told a very different story to his words. "Are you sure you can stay the night? I thought your father...?"
Joey shook his head and looked away. "His idea of celebrating Christmas is for him to get roarin' drunk and stay that way from Christmas Eve to New Year's." He looked back at Kaiba and grinned a little. "I usually spend that week at Tristan's but I was dreadin' it this year. He's practically livin' with Devlin already. I didn't want to be a third wheel. This way, they'll have Christmas Eve all to themselves and I'll be able to spend mine with... those I care about." He said the last bit very softly, but Seto heard.
Holding the blonde a little closer, Seto whispered in his ear. "Mokuba and I care about you too." He was rewarded with a blush and a blonde who was suddenly even more snuggly than he had been a minute earlier.
As he stroked Wheeler's shoulder, Seto realised what was nagging him about what the other teen had said. "You said Christmas Eve... what about the rest of the week?"
Joey shrugged. "If Tristan doesn't want me, Yug will let me stay there." He looked at Kaiba and shook his head when the brunette started to speak. "I don't want ya to get tired of me bein' around."
Seto arched an eyebrow. "Wheeler... just when I start to think that my first impression of you was wrong... you go and say something that proves that you are indeed an idiot." He smiled a little at the indignant response and glare that earned him, but didn't release the blonde when he tried to move away. Instead, he just held him closer.
"You are staying with us. There is no question of you doing anything else and neither Mokuba nor I will hear another word on the subject. If you need anything else for your stay, we can stop at your place on the way home from Yugi's this evening. The subject is now closed. Tired of you..." He huffed and shook his head. "As if that could ever happen. This past week has proven that time and time again. As far as I am concerned... the Kaiba mansion is now your home as well."
Joey burrowed his head into Kaiba's shoulder as his arms slipped around the brunette. He held him very tightly for the rest of the drive home.
Just as tightly as Seto held him.
