Jou was rushing down a dark silent street, rage fueling his every step when he became aware of a tall body falling in stride next to him. A quick glance and he growled “Kaiba I ain’t got time. Sorry I left like dat but I got stuff I gotta take care of with Mai and Valon.” “Fine, I’ll come along too. I’d like to have a long talk with Mai.” “Look dis ain’t yer biz, so buzz off.” “No.” Jou skidded to a stop. “Damn it Seto, dis is gonna get fucking ugly. I don’t wantcha involved.” “Tough. I’ve been involved for over a decade. It’s time I took an active role.” “Gawddamn it Kaiba...” Jou swore and sighed “I don’t have fuckin’ time ta argue. Lets go. But you let me handle it. I got a lot I’m gonna say.” At the prison facility Jou was met by a uniformed officer and two obvious lawyers. Jou stepped forward aggressively “This is Kaiba, he’s my personal rep. My lawyer couldn’t be reached. His word is gold in every country of the world. Where I go he goes.” Instantly the two lawyers turned to fawning sycophants. “Of course Mister Jounouchi.” He nodded and held out his hand. “Mister Kaiba I’m Richard Dowel, the district attorney. Mister Randolph is my assistant. Welcome to the States.” Seto’s blue eyes narrowed and he shook hands briefly. “Lets get on with this.” “I assume Mister Jounouchi has filled you in?” The D.A. asked as he turned and hurried into a veritable labyrinth of sterile, utilitarian corridors. “Why don’t you go over it again, so it doesn’t get lost in the telling.” “Of course. Since Valon Christianson was brought in he has been in a declining state of health. Several of his organs have increasing damage and are shutting down. He has refused all medical care and has agreed to give a confession if Mister Jounouchi and Missus Christianson witness it.” “I see.” And he did. Of course Jou would jump at the opportunity. It would end his separation from his son. Relief poured through him, dousing the jealousy and washing away his pain. Jou hadn’t chosen the bitch over him again. Outside a door marked infirmary they stopped. “Mister Christian is in very poor condition and his appearance is very bad. Please be prepared.” The top attorney in the city opened the door and led them through the darkened, isolated room. Valon was propped up by pillows and an adjustable hospital bed. He was shackled to the bed, but it was obvious that it was unnecessary. The man was very close to death. His lips were blue and his skin milk white. His every breath was labored and rattling. When he saw Jounouchi his filmy blue eyes brightened and cleared slightly. He nodded to the attendant. “Okay, I’ll take the oxygen now.” He gave a second man, seated on a stool in the corner a tiny nod. Get ready to write it up.” The man nodded silently. The male nurse placed a cannula around his head and adjusted it to blow oxygen directly into his nostrils. In just a few breaths the blue faded to a pale pink but his skin remained dead pale. “Jounouchi Katsuya. Thank you for coming.” He rasped. “That guy in the corner is my lawyer. He’s going to type it up after I give it.” “Yeah whatever.” Jou shrugged and moved to stand at the foot of the bed. “Get on with it.” “Gotta wait for Mai.” A ghost of a smile flitted across his lips. “You were always full of fire. I’m glad to see it’s still there.” Jou glared with hate. Regardless of what he suspected, this man, this monster had murdered Vic, had eaten part of his brain. “You’re wanting me to hurry up and go to hell. I can see it.” He wheezed. “I’ll get there soon enough.” The door opened and Mai shuffled in, hands bound in cuffs. She sprang forward with a cry, reaching for Valon with desperate hands. “Valon what’s going on? Why are you so sick? What’s happened? Has someone hurt you?” “No. Calm down woman. I think I’m getting just what I deserve. Okay, for the record, my name is Valon Christianson, I was born on June 17 1979.” He smiled slightly when Mai gasped. “Yeah Mai, I lied to you. I wasn’t 20 when we got married. I was barely 17.” “But... But...” “That’s right Love, we were never legally married. I was too young to get married legally without parental consent. Besides I was never a legal resident of Japan. You know I come from Australia. I wasn’t even in the country legally. I used dummied papers.” “Oh...” Tears spilled from her eyes. “I would have waited, you didn’t have to lie. We’ll fix it today. I forgive you.” “No that’s not why I told you that. There’s more. It was all a con. I don’t love you, never did. You came from a rich family and you had money. You were a good duelist and were part of the elites. I wanted into that circle. See I thought I recognized... I knew Kaiba was gay. I wanted to slide into that group to seduce him. I wanted the cushy life. It was just a con.” “Darling don’t talk like that. I know you are just trying to make it easier on me but don’t lie.” Mai continued to cry. “Don’t be more of an idiot than you already are. You were nothing more than a mark. Decent in bed but nothing great. Your family tossed you when they found out you married me didn’t they? They knew what I was. You were blind.” “But...” “Shut up now. I have more to tell. I knew you were knocked up when I left. Of course I did. You hadn’t been bitchy in weeks and you were tossing your cookies. You didn’t have money, you were going to be hideous soon, and you’d have the brat. Besides, you got on my nerves with your constant ‘love’ and ‘soul mate’ crap. I dummied up a divorce decree, dumped you fast and moved to the next mark. I’d been seeing her for a few weeks.” With brutal honestly he added “I didn’t think about you again until I saw you at the bar in Bali. I saw the opportunities. You’d done well for yourself, your husband was rich and thought the kid was his. I was laying low from my last mark and decided you were the perfect opportunity to earn a bit of extra to get me further away.” He grimaced in pain and hacked, blood leaking from his lips and nose. The attendant dabbed roughly. “Easy there Mate, dying man here.” He chided, and smiled slightly, his teeth shining reddish yellow with his blood. “When I talked to you, you changed it. You wanted to be ‘with me’ and the brat. I got a great plan to live high on the hog, maybe have a poly relationship with you and your husband. I’d have been on easy street with pussy and ass at my beck and call and I only had to put up with your mewling and the brat.” He shrugged when Jou made a move as if to attack. Seto stepped from the shadows and grabbed his arm. Valon’s rheumy eyes flew wide with recognition. “Well, well, Kaiba Seto. Never thought I’d ever see you in person.” Mai, who’d ignored everyone but Valon in the room, spun sharply, her face – already pale and lined, crumpled and seemed to age in seconds. “Kaiba.” He ignored both of them. “Easy Jou. Just let him talk. He’s dying and you want this finished.” The tension drained and the blond man nodded. “Yeah. I got a long life ahead of me. He’s got maybe a few hours.” “Maybe half an hour.” Valon corrected. “I waited as long as I could. Okay, so, when I came to your place you weren’t supposed to throw us out. We were supposed to have a big group hug, maybe some group sex for getting acquainted, then settle into bliss. Mai was sure you would listen, that you loved her and Vic enough to allow me into your lives.” He rolled his eyes at the woman. “Yeah right. You tossed us so there we were, I didn’t have a lot of money and Mai had none. Stupid bitch that she is, Mai actually thought we would go back to travelling the duel circuit. Kaiba shot that down quick. He knew she cheated before.” He coughed again and bloody spittle sprayed from his mouth. The nurse cleaned him up and calmly turned the dial up on the oxygen. Valon’s breathing eased a bit and the rattle lightened. “So shit went to hell. An old friend loaned us his place while I tried to figure out how to ditch them. I tried to get them to go back to you, telling them it was best for both of them but the silly bitch was so convinced we were ‘soul mates’ she refused to leave. I even spent my last five bucks on beer instead of food for the kid.” Here he paused “By the way you did a great job with him. He was a great kid. I don’t regret a lot but I regret what happened to him. I never wanted him but I was kinda proud of him. If I ever wanted be a dad it would be to a kid like him. He wasn’t mine and I was jealous. Yeah I knocked her up, but everything else about him was all yours.” “So you killed him? Because you were proud of him?” “Fuck I don’t know. That’s the honest truth. Yeah I killed him, but it’s like a dark dream where everything is murky and coated in red shadows. That day I was sick. Like the flu. I drank some beer and I remember thinking I’d like to be his dad. That’s my last clear thought until I woke up here. I remember, like in a nightmare, beating him, making him call me dad. I remember more. I remember wanting to take you out of him, to make him mine. It was like I was crazy or something. I remember... I remember what I did to him and I remember feeling his heart stop.” Varon shuddered and wretched as blood bubbled up from his lips. Calmly the attendant suctioned it away. “That’s it, that’s my confession. I killed him. I did. But I was not myself at the time. It was like some crazy dream or hallucination.” He met Jou’s eyes directly. “When I get to the other side I don’t expect forgiveness. Like I said, I don’t regret much, but I do regret killing your son.” Mai, her chained hands pressed to her lips, sobbed. “No, no! It wasn’t you. It wasn’t. You didn’t kill him. He was dead already. Don’t you understand? He was already dead!” Valon ignored the outburst. Mai had ceased to matter to him. She had been no more than an easy mark. She deserved what she got for sheer stupidity. But the kid hadn’t, and for that he owed. He fully expected to pay. “That’s it. I think I have about ten minutes left. Thanks for coming.” His lawyer stood and handed him the paper his portable printer had just printed. The full confession was less than half a page. Pitiful to have it summed up in such a short paper, but it would work. Valon couldn’t really focus but he pretended to skim it then, with a hand shaking and barely able to hold a pen he scrawled his name. To seal the deal he stuck his thumb in his mouth coated his thumb in blood and pressed next to his name. His lawyer took the document and signed, as did the D.A. and A.D.A “We’re done here.” He moved to the door. Jou glanced over at them. “I’d like to stay. Take Kaiba for coffee will ya? I want it just me, Mai and Valon if that’s possible.” Seto moved to protest only to subside when Jou shook his head. “I got something ta say to both of them. This will be my last chance.” Fury, demand and plea mixed in the dark gold eyes. Without a word Seto spun and marched to the door. Rigidly he stalked out ahead of the four men following him. When the door shut, leaving the three alone, Jou glanced at Mai. “You both are murderers.” He gave Valon a sardonic look. “And I believe you about not being in your right mind. It probably was hallucinogenic or some other kind of psychosis. You were poisoned.” Valon’s eyes widened “What?” He rasped. “You ate some mushrooms with Vic the night before you got sick?” “Yeah. Vic put them in the microwave with butter and garlic.” “They were green. He got them off the counter.” Jou looked at Mai. “She went and gathered mushrooms that night. She left them on the counter. She knew Vic was hungry. She deliberately left Deathcap mushrooms on the counter with a hungry boy – who was used to her making mushrooms – in the house. Does that sound like an accident?” Valon’s eyes lit slightly. “No. Sounds like she wanted to kill us.” “No!” Mai’s voice was hysterical. “Never you. Valon, Vic was destroying us. I could feel him coming between us. But you were so proud of him I knew you’d never let Jou have him so I... I couldn’t let him separate us.” “So you set him up to eat deadly poison.” Jou nodded calmly, as if he didn’t want to leap to his feet and rip her throat out. “That’s why he was sick.” He stared down at Valon. “That’s why you are sick. Deathcap poisoning causes flu symptoms in the first twenty four hours, they last for two days or so and then you feel better – until your organs start to die.” Valon laughed shortly, his breath wheezing obscenely. “Fuck, the stupid bitch killed me.” “Yes. But you murdered her son before she could, so I’d say you deserve it.” Mai sobbed “It was an accident. If I tell them you might have been Deathcap poisoned they might be able to save you. Valon, don’t leave me. I swear I won’t be stupid. If you want money I’ll get it.” He rolled his eyes. “Can you get rid of her for me? I don’t want my last minute on earth hearing her screech. Jou nodded and moved to the door. Everyone was hovering outside the door. “Could you get her out of here. He wants her gone.” Two uniformed police standing politely in the hall rushed in and dragged her away. Jou closed the door again and moved back to the bed. Valon was laboring for each breath and blood bubbled from his lips continuously. It didn’t bother Jou, in fact he received a savage satisfaction in the agony on the other man’s face. But he could see the other man was struggling to speak. He reached up and turned the oxygen on full. Valon’s breathing eased slightly but the dark blue color was returning to his lips. “How... how did you know about... about mushrooms.” Jou smiled, his eyes full of satisfaction and malice. “Vic told me.” Shock filled Valon’s blue eyes. “H...how... dead...” “No. He’s safe and sound, alive and happy. He stuffed himself on turkey and cookies today. But you will pay for what you did to him.” Instead of confusion, a strange light, almost like joy filled those blue eyes. “Goo... Take care of him... so sorry...” The light faded and the blue eyes flew wide. A harsh cough shook the restrained form. Jou moved away from the body writhing in death’s dance and opened the door. “I think he’s going.” The attendant walked past Jou slowly, casually, and watched with empty eyes as Valon’s body stilled. “Yep, he’s gone.” He nodded and made a quick note on the chart. “I’ll call the doctor for an official TOD.” Something about the man’s attitude struck Jou as cold. The nurse caught his look and shrugged. “Got no use for baby killers. Kinda sorry he missed out on lockup. He would have gotten what he deserved. This was too good a death for him.” Jou blinked and nodded. But he backed from the room cautiously. He didn’t want to turn his back on the stone-cold nurse. Kaiba and the officials were waiting for him. “Thank you for coming so quickly.” “Yeah whatever it takes to end this.” He shrugged. “Your wife is asking to see you.” “My wife? I don’t have a wife.” “Mister Jounouchi, that’s not true. Mister Christianson admitted that his marriage to her was not legal. That means you are still married.” Jou laughed and shook his head. “Not really, because I wasn’t eighteen when we married and I sure as hell didn’t have parental permission. Our marriage was never legal either. We were married in Japan, but I am a legal resident of America. I didn’t become a bi-citizen of Japan until a few weeks ago. I didn’t know it wasn’t legal until all of this came out.” “Sir, she is demanding to see you and is quite hysterical. Please?” Jou shrugged. “Fine, whatever. But only for a few minutes.” He glanced at Seto. “You’re coming?” “You couldn’t stop me.” “Thought not. Gonna tell me what you want to talk to her about?” “I’m going to warn her never to come to Japan, to leave me and mine alone.” “Sounds like we have the same plan.” Jou shrugged and moved away. “If that’s all... I think I can handle it.” He turned to the guard. “Mister Kaiba will be staying here. I’d like some privacy with... her.” Seto glared at him furiously for a moment then gave a stiff nod. If Jou didn’t want him then he wouldn’t continue to force. He had company waiting. “Fine, I’ll see you at home.” He spun around and stalked away. Jou sighed and turned back to the door. He didn’t want to upset Kaiba, not after everything the man had done for him, but he needed to do this alone. He need to for his own sanity. Mai was sitting at a small table sobbing into her hands. When he walked in she sprang to her feet and ran to him, holding out her hands. “Jou I can’t believe I was so blind. I can’t believe I gave it all up for him, gave you up. Please, please forgive me. I know now... he was an illusion, a trap. I never loved him. I love you more than anything. Forgive me.” Jou was stunned by the tactic she took. Automatically he stepped back. “What the fuck? Have you lost your mind? Or do you think I’m that stupid?” “I’m the stupid one. And I’m finally seeing clear. For the first time in my life I’m seeing clear.” She sobbed and knelt on the floor. “Forgive me. Please forgive me.” “You are insane. Your ‘soul mate’ is still warm down the hall and you are kneeling to me begging for forgiveness. And what about Vic, what you did to him. You deliberately poisoned your son because you were jealous.” “I didn’t. It was a terrible accident. I meant to throw them away, but it was all so terrible I forgot. They must have eaten them. Jou, I would have never harmed him, never allow him to be harmed.” Her face lifted to him, her eyes begging “If you want another baby we’ll have one. I’m not too old. We can even name him Vic. He’ll have blond hair and brown eyes... Jou please...” She stood and brushed against him in a parody of sex. “We’ll have all the sex you want. I won’t turn you down ever again. Please... say you still love me.” He jumped away, his back hitting the door. “You are incredible.” He breathed. “You have no conscience at all, no heart. You are a psychopath or something.” “You love me. You know you do. Just forgive me, please.” Jou groped for the knob behind him. “I can’t forgive you Mai. You are ... I don’t know what you are, but I won’t ever forgive you for what you did.” “You...” Her voice changed from begging to hard and mean in a heartbeat. “It’s Kaiba isn’t it. After everything I did for you, giving you everything, you still want him.” “Kaiba isn’t involved. Stay away from me and mine Mai. I am sure you were told weeks ago that our marriage was not legal so you have no further grounds to contact me.” “So it is Kaiba.” She raged as if he hadn’t spoken. “I knew at the dance that if I didn’t act fast he might come after you. But he never did. Guess he found out what I learned. You are the worst lay. No skill, no staying power. Thirty second wonder. Barely able to get it up, much less keep it up.” She laughed cruelly. Jou didn’t argue though. It was true. And now that he’d seen the video of what happened at the prom he had to wonder if that played into it. “Whatever. I’m sayin’ we were never married, ya got no reason to come near me ever again. I’m leavin’ th’ States an’ I won’t come back. You stay here an’ ya got no problems. Don’t follow me ta Japan Mai. Ya won’t like the consequences. Ya murdered my son just as much as Valon did and I’d just as soon gut you as look at ya.” Wrenching the door open he called out “Done here. Take her back. I’ll have my lawyers press charges ta th’ fullest.” The guard led the coldly furious blonde woman to her cell. As the door clanged shut a though occurred to her. How had Jounouchi known about the mushrooms? Only three people had known. Herself, Vic, and Valon. And Valon hadn’t known until Jou told him. She knew she hadn’t told anyone, so that left Vic. Her breath caught in her throat as she put together the pieces only a fractured mind could see. No body, only DNA evidence... but evidence could be faked or bought. And it would explain why she remembered several people in Vic’s room, hovering over the boy. Vic... her son... Valon’s son was alive and Jounouchi had him. Her first instinct was to jump up and start screaming the truth. She clamped down on that though. Nobody would believe her. They would probably put her back in the hospital tied to a bed. No she would have to plan this carefully. If she played it right Jou and Vic would both be hers again. Her life would be the way it was before. *** Mulle, dragonlady, and catti!
