Chapter Eight
Two things occurred the moment Roland finished imparting his shocking news.
First, Joey's gasp of shock could clearly be heard echoing throughout the silent room. Second, Kaiba threw back the sheet that had been wrapped around his waist, jumped out of bed, tore down the steps and across the bedroom before either men had the chance to blink an eye. The blond had never seen anyone move so fast in his entire life.
Inside the dressing room the brunette quickly grabbed the first articles of clothing he could find and threw them on as he hit his Personal Assistant with a barrage of questions.
“What's his condition? Where is he? Have the Board of Directors been notified? Is my plane ready?
The list seemed endless and Roland answered every single inquiry with calm, quiet efficiency. As he did, the towering brunette never once left his post by the elevator. “I'm afraid his condition is critical, Sir,” The bodyguard explained. “He's currently en route to the Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York. The Board of Directors are being informed that you are leaving the country and Kc1 is on stand-by at Domino International Airport. Kc5 is on the roof ready to fly you there and the pilot should be arriving in just a few moments.”
“Good, then let's go.” The ascetic businessman confirmed as he walked back into the bedroom, shrugging into a black leather trench coat on his way. Suddenly, he became aware of a very real problem. In his haste to leave, Kaiba completely forgot about the blond sitting in his bed. Six feet from his Private Lift the brunette stopped and turned around. “Wheeler?” He inquired cautiously, unsure whether he should apologize or not for overlooking the blonds' presence.
Joey, on the other hand, didn't hesitate. The moment Kaiba's sapphire-blue eyes focused on him he snapped out of his stupor.
“Ga!” The blond demanded without thought, waving his hand in the brunette's general direction. “Don' worry 'bout me, jus' get ta ya brot’er.”
The stoic CEO didn't need to be told twice. A heartbeat later Kaiba turned on his heel and entered the elevator, his Personal Assistant following in his wake. Immediately, the shiny chrome doors closed behind them leaving Joey alone in the CEO's vast apartment.
Kaiba arrived at Domino International Airport approximately fifteen minutes after he reached the rooftop of KaibaCorp Tower. Kc5 touched down less than a thousand meters away from the grandest transport anyone had ever seen. Kc1 was an Airbus a380, the largest passenger plane in the world, and could travel non-stop from Japan to New York in just under twelve hours. Although this aircraft was a super-modified version designed by Seto, himself, to suit his personal needs when traveling, it was exactly what the stoic CEO needed right now. Even though Kaiba's Learjet would have been an adequate means of transportation, Kc2 would have required several stop-over's for refuelling. Time Seto didn't have to waste.
Kaiba and his towering bodyguard left the lavish confines of the Bell-Huey class helicopter, slightly hunched over to avoid the treacherous assault of the propeller blades, and headed straight for the luxury aircraft.
As soon an the pair had appeared they immediately climbed the boarding staircase to the Main Level of the plane. Two Flight Attendant's, dressed in KaibaCorp uniforms, greeted their arrival and closed the doors once the stoic CEO and his Personal Assistant had passed. Roland turned left and headed straight for the cockpit to expedite take-off while Seto climbed the ornate staircase, located directly in front of him, bound for the Upper Deck and his Private Lounge.
When the handsome brunette reached his seat, he removed his trench coat and tossed it over a chair to his right. Then he settled himself down into the lush confines of the soft white leather and buckled his seatbelt, waving off the Flight Attendant who offered to assist.
Less than five minutes later, Kaiba felt the plane leap into motion. The only thought on his mind was that he had to get to Mokuba as soon as possible.
Several hours after Seto had left, Joey found himself sinking into the soft cushions of his dark brown, faux suede sofa. He figured he might as well head home since he had papers to deliver in less than two hours but the blond just couldn't get Roland's announcement off his mind.
The Personal Assistant's upsetting news kept echoing through his head and Joey felt himself physically flinch at the memory. They were almost the exact same words his mother's doctor had spoken to him the day before. After Dr. Frankson had relayed the terrifying results of his mother's tests the blond had doubled over in the hallway of the hospital. It was like someone had punched him in the stomach and he felt like he was going to get sick.
Silently, Joey wondered if that's what Kaiba had felt not too long ago.
Where as, the blond was use to not having his mother around, even though it hurt that she was going to die, Kaiba on the other hand had spent almost every day of his life with his little brother. There was nothing the brunette wouldn't do for the kid. To suddenly be faced with the possibility of losing that, Seto must be devastated and Joey almost wished he had asked Kaiba to wait so he could go with them. So the brunette didn't have to face these terrifying circumstances alone.
A moment later the blond was jolted out of his musings by a knock at the front door. Groaning, Joey stood and made his way across the apartment. Wondering who it could be, the blond released the locks and turned the handle only to be presented with the delicate features of his baby sister.
“Sereni’y?”
“Good morning, big brother.” The red-head cried happily. “Mind if I come in?”
“U’, sure.” Joey replied once the initial shock of seeing the teenager wore off. He opened the door further, allowing her to pass, then closed it again and turned back around to face her. “Nawt dat I don' min' bu’ wha'cha ya doin' 'ere, sis?”
The blond asked as he watched the young girl cross the living room to take a seat in the sofa's matching armchair. The red-head dropped her purse on the floor and settled herself into the oversized piece of furniture, folding her slim legs beneath her tiny form. Finally, she leaned against the arm of the chair and fixed her steady, green gaze on her older sibling.
“Class ended early today and I just had the urge to see you.” She stated as she watched Joey return to his place on the sofa. “You don't mind, do you?”
“Naw, 'course nawt.” The blond answered with a shrug. “I always love ta see ya, ya knaw dat.” He added with an amiable wink and a charming grin.
Serenity had to giggle. That's what she loved the most about her brother. No matter how hard things seemed, he was always there with a beaming smile, a sparkle in his eye and a thumbs up to make the situation better. The blond never let anyone see how worried he got or how bad the situation really was. He just toiled on like the world was the perfect place to live.
Unfortunately, this time, the red-head didn't think it was going to work.
Immediately, the mood changed and Serenity started toying with the hem of her school uniform. The dainty teenager turned her head to stare down at the jacket as she twisted the soft fabric with the tips of her fingers. Joey watched quietly as the young girl appeared lost in thought, wordlessly wondering what she could be thinking about. Finally, Serenity broke the silence.
“Joey,” The red-head started tentatively. “I was thinking about what Dr. Frankson said about Mom.”
The blonds' worst fears realized, all Joey could do was release a dejected sigh. He had been waiting for this conversation since the doctor had voiced their mother's final diagnosis yesterday.
“Sereni’y…” Joey began.
“No, no. I understand.” The red-head cut in before her brother could finish. “I know there's nothing we can do. I was just wondering something, that's all.” She added, raising her emerald-green eyes to focus on her older sibling.
“Wha'?” The blond asked, not sure if he was going to like the question or not.
“Are you going to miss her?”
'Nope'. Joey thought. He definitely did not like the question.
Releasing another sigh, the blond sat upright on the sofa and gestured for his little sister to join him. The dainty teenager slowly extracted herself from the oversized chair and crossed the distance to sit beside her big brother. She leaned against his chest and rested the side of her head on his shoulder as Joey wrapped his left arm around the young girl.
Carefully, the blond lost himself in thought for a few moments while he tried to find a delicate way to voice his opinion. In the past Joey had always tried to shield Serenity from the harsh burdens of reality but he'd never lied to his little sister and he wasn't about to start now.
“Ya knaw I love ya, sis. An' ya knaw I' never lie ta ya bu’ I can' say as 'm gonna miss 'er.” The blond began. “Bu’ I ain't sayin' it don' 'urt.” He added with a gentle squeeze.
“I know,” The dainty teenager countered with a sigh of her own. “I was just hoping, that's all.”
“Yea’, I 'ear ya, sis. Bu’ ya can' miss some'in' ya ne’er 'ad.” The blond supplemented, gently rubbing his sister's upper arm to soothe his insensitive words. Silence filled the tiny living room before Joey continued. “It's like ya wit’ dad.” He persisted, trying to find the best example he could to help his sister understand. “If some'in' were ta 'appen ta 'im tomorrow, woul’ ya miss 'im?”
The young girl thought about that for a moment before she answered. “No.”
“An' w’y's dat?” Joey ventured.
“Because I don't really know him.” Serenity answered, suddenly realizing where her brother was going with this. “I’d be sad that he was gone but I wouldn't miss him.”
“Den ya understan’ 'ow I feel 'bout ma.” Joey finished and she did.
Hoping to take some of the sting out of his declaration, the blond added, “'Sides, all dat madder's is dat we gawt each ot’er.” He stated with another gentle squeeze and suddenly feeling the need to lighten the mood, Joey pulled his hand back until his fingers rested near the red-head's armpit. A heartbeat later, the blond started to tickle her without mercy.
Immediately, Serenity released a squeal of surprise before it was followed with a string of giggles and pleas for her brother to stop. Joey had no such intentions as his other hand reached out to join the first, filling the tiny living room with light-hearted laughter.
The two siblings battled it out for a good five minutes before the blond stopped his assault and leaned back against the sofa with a deep sigh, releasing an authentic chuckle as he watched his little sister struggle to breath.
His honey-brown eyes shone with genuine mirth as Serenity repositioned herself on the sofa, good-naturally swatting her brother across the arm. The dainty teenager shot Joey a deadly glare as she readjusted her school uniform but the blond could tell she didn't mean it and he laughed at the young girl's childish antics.
It was a horrible thing to think but Joey was almost glad that his mother had become ill. Her condition had brought the two siblings back together and the blond couldn't be happier.
With that inconsiderate realization came another more profound one. Joey finally understood the bond between Kaiba and Mokuba. The two brother's depended on one another the same way he did with his sister. The blond could live just fine without the presence of his mother or father but he knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he could never survive in this world without Serenity.
Joey's insightfulness floored him and the smile that graced his gorgeous features immediately disappeared only to replaced by a thoughtful frown. An expression that did not go unnoticed by his perceptive sister.
“What's wrong, Joey?”
“’M?” The blond responded with half a mind, still lost in wordless contemplation.
“You're so quiet all of a sudden. What's on your mind?” The young girl inquired.
“O', I's jus' t’inkin' 'bout some'in', dat's all.” Joey answered, still deep in thought. The blond wondered if Mokuba was going to be alright and he was concerned for the stoic CEO. Kaiba had seemed so determined and in control of his emotions when he'd left the apartment but Joey was beginning to wonder if that wasn't part of the brunette's emotionless façade.
“Joey?” Serenity ventured as she cautiously placed a delicate hand on her brother's forearm. “Are you thinking about Mom?” She asked, beginning to worry. The blond seemed so distracted all of a sudden. Distracted and sad.
“’M?” Joey replied, still lost in his own world. Finally, he pulled himself together and stuttered, “Ma? Naw, I ain't t’inkin' 'bout ma.” The blond added with a shake of his head.
“Then what's on your mind?” She asked again, tilting her head to the side and studying her brother's forlorn expression. When Serenity didn't get an answer, the red-head tried a different approach. “Is it Kaiba?”
That did the trick.
Joey's head quickly snapped upward at the mention of the CEO's name. He starred into his sister's deep-green eyes for a moment before carefully responding, “Wha' 'bout 'im?”
“You tell me.” She stated. “You're the one thinking about him.”
“It's not’in', sis.” The blond countered with a shrug, hoping to make light of the situation.
Serenity was immediately on the defensive. She knew she'd given Joey a hard time yesterday when he'd confided in her about his relationship but she had hoped that the two siblings had gotten past this silly game of cat-and-mouse. The red-head sniffed her disbelief and crossed her arms in front of her chest, showing her annoyance. Joey released a heavy sigh as he watched his sister's aggravated response, knowing she was not going to let the subject drop that easily.
“Sis, p’ease…” The blond begged without success.
“I thought we could tell each other anything.” She cried and Joey could hear the pain in his sister's voice. “But you keep shutting me out! How am I suppose to be expected to tell you private things about myself when you can't and won't return the favour?” The feisty teenager shouted as she jumped off the couch and began to pace the room.
Okay, that hurt and Joey had to concede that his sister had a point.
“I jus' don' wanna upset ya, dat's all.” The blond finally admitted.
“I knew it!” The red-head declared as she spun around to face her brother. “He hurt you, didn't he? What did he say? What did he do? I'll kill the filthy bastard if I ever get my hands on him!”
Joey had to work extra hard to suppress a chuckle. God love his baby sister and pity Kaiba if he ever really did cause him any pain. The last thing the stoic CEO would ever want to do was face Serenity's fiery temper. For the sake of peace, the blond decided that he'd better interrupt before the spirited red-head had the chance to continue her furious tantrum.
“Trus' me, sis.” Joey stated calmly trying to soothe his sister's ardent disposition. “It ain't like dat, at all.”
Serenity heard the truth in her brother's words as soon as he said them and the dainty teenager immediately settled down. Suddenly contrite, the red-head blushed from the intensity of her outburst and tried to cover her embarrassment by inquiring, “Then what happened to make you so sad all of a sudden?”
Joey sighed deeply at the heartened question. He hadn't wanted to burden his sister with such horrors but he suspected whatever affected Kaiba now affected him and therefore Serenity had the right to know. So he told her about Mokuba's accident and Kaiba's reaction earlier that morning.
As soon as the blond was finished delivered the sorrowful news Serenity's hands flew up to cover her dainty mouth. “Oh my God, Joey! Is he going to be alright?” She gasped through slim fingers.
“I 'onestly don' knaw.” The blond replied with a shake of his head, a frown forming to mar his gorgeous features. “Alls I knaw is dat 'e was 'urt ba’ w’en Kaiba lef’.”
“But, he's going to be alright, isn't he Joey?” The red-head cried as she dropped her hands and flew to the blonds' side. The dainty teenager clutched onto his t-shirt in pained desperation as she starred at her brother with grief-stricken, doe-like eyes.
No matter how hard Joey tried, there was no way he was going to be able to hide the sadness in his expression. He gazed down at his sister's haunted face as he forced back his tears and answered the young girl truthfully, “I don’ knaw, Sereni’y, Rolan’ sai’ 'e was cri’cal.”
Joey's statement drew another shocked gasp from his sister. Not one to conceal her emotions so easily, the red-head's emerald-green orbs began to overflow with tears and trickle down her delicate cheekbones.
For a moment, the blond thought he was going to join her but he forced himself to swallow the lump in his overly dry throat as he raised his right hand to wipe away Serenity's tears.
“It'll be 'k, sis.” Joey began trying to appear fearless for his sister's benefit. “If I knaw Kaiba, 'e's gawt it all under control.”
“But, shouldn't we do something to help?” She asked adamantly.
“Dere's nawt much we can da.” Joey admitted reluctantly. “Mokuba's in da States an' we're stuck 'ere.”
“Then why didn't you leave with Kaiba this morning? That way you could have been there with him.” Serenity inquired earnestly.
“'E didn' ask me ta ga.” Joey refuted.
“He shouldn't have to.” The red-head countered. She cocked her head to the right and carefully studied her brother's stubborn features. For a moment the blond seemed genuinely put out by the fact that the stoic CEO hadn't thought to invite Joey along. She silently wondered if maybe her brother was upset over the billionaire's lack of invitation. “Joey, do you love Kaiba or not?” She asked with quiet determination as she let go of his t-shirt and sat back on the sofa.
“'Course I da.“ The blond replied. He'd discovered the answer to that question earlier that morning.
“Then you should be there with him.” The red-head stated matter-of-factly. “Besides, if I'd just learned that you were in a hospital fighting for you life, the last thing I'd be thinking about was who I was going to ask to go with me. Personally,” Serenity added with a nonchalant shrug. “I should hope I wouldn't have to. I would hope that my friends cared enough about us to join me, no matter what.”
For a moment Joey starred at his sister in awe. What was it with her being so mature an insightful lately? To the blonds' amazement, she was right and he had no way of refuting her statement; except one.
“Wha' 'bout ma?” He asked carefully.
“I've been taking care of Mom for years by myself, Joey. I've got it covered.” Serenity answered in a responsible tone of voice. When the blond gave her a disbelieving look she rushed to add, “Well, maybe I was shaken up a little bit, at first, but I've got Yugi and the others to help if I need it.”
For a moment, Joey hesitated. He'd been reluctant to include his friends in his personal problems for years, afraid of what their reactions might be if they found out the truth about his family situation. But maybe it was time to let them in. Maybe it was time to ask for their support and hope for the best, just like his sister had announced so thoughtfully. All that aside, there were still a few things that could not be overlooked.
“An' wha' 'bout da’?” He added.
“Same answer.” The red-head replied without thought. “Besides, he's my father too and I've always been kind of disappointed that you'd never let me help take care of him.”
“Sereni’y…” Joey implored trying to find a delicate way to tell his sister that their father was a drunk.
“Yeah, I know.” The dainty teenager cut him off. “Dad's an alcoholic.” She added knowingly. “I've been aware of that fact for awhile now. Listen Joey,” The young girl continued looking at her older brother with a loving smile. “You've got to stop trying to shelter me from the truth. I'm going to find these things out one way or another and I'd rather have you by my side when I do instead of trying to hide things from me to keep me safe.”
“I knaw, sis.” The blond relented, reaching out to envelope his sister in a heartfelt embrace. “Bu’ I like ta delude myself inta t’inkin' ya're still sweet an' innocent.”
Serenity giggled as she reached out to return the hug. “For you, big brother, I will always be sweet and innocent.”
Joey had to laugh at his sister's sad attempt to console him. The blond supposed he really didn't have any other reason to stale for time. He was just worried that Kaiba would feel like Joey was intruding on personal family business if he showed up in New York unannounced. But what did he have to lose? Just the most amazing man he'd ever known in his entire life.
With a deep sigh, the blond relented as he released his sister and sat back on the sofa. Joey could always find more work and it would be no problem to call the bank and give Serenity access to his account so she could take care of herself and both their parents. Now the blond only had one problem left. How did he get to the United States of America?
The red-head watched silently as her big brother chewed on his bottom lip, lost in quiet contemplation. She was about to ask what was wrong when the blond jumped up from the couch and tore across the tiny space and into the bedroom. He returned a few minutes later holding a tiny, white business card in his right hand. Without a word or a glance in her direction, Joey reached for the phone and began to dial a number. After a moment of silence, the blond began to talk.
“'Ey dere, Rolan‘, it's Joey. Ya gawt a minu’e? I gawt some'in' I wanna ask ya.”
“Roland Richardson speaking, how can I help you?”
Kaiba was pulled from a mindless void by the rich timbre of his Personal Assistant's deep voice. He waited with breathless anticipation as he watched the towering brunette readjust the Bluetooth headset in his ear. There had been no news on Mokuba for hours and the stoic CEO was beginning to fear the worst.
“Just one moment, please.” The bodyguard stated as he gracefully climbed to his feet. Dark-brown eyes locked with his boss' deep-blue as Roland slowly shook his head. “I'm sorry, Mr. Kaiba, I'm afraid this is a personal call.” He answered the unspoken question with a tone of regret before he turned to leave the room.
The brunette heaved a deep sigh as he watched the door close behind the older man, sinking back into the soft, leather chair and doing his best to relax. Without much success.
Seto's muscles were stiff and sore and if he'd had the energy the stoic CEO would have been up and pacing the spacious confines of the plane's Private Lounge. But he'd worn himself out hours ago while he'd been on the phone yelling at Upstate University’s hospital staff and the park's administration.
Everyone from the Chief Hospital Administrator to the Assistant-Lead Contractor to Mr. Ebisu, himself, had endured the harsh sting of Kaiba's icy wrath as they mournfully divulge information in regards to his younger brother's life-threatening condition.
The accident had occurred while Mokuba had been standing on the support scaffolding to the Blue-Eyes Jet Coaster. The team included himself and the Lead Contractor along with five other construction workers. They'd been inspecting the resent work that had been completed on the rollercoaster when the walkway and framework had given way. All seven men had fallen over one hundred feet to the hard concrete below. The raven-haired teenager had been the sole survivor and only because he'd landed on the bodies of the Lead Contractor and two other construction workers. Those three men had broken his fall, leaving the younger Kaiba with a mild concussion, a broken collarbone and a dislocated shoulder.
Unfortunately, the real injury had occurred during the fall, itself. One of the metal support beams had penetrated the top of Mokuba's right thigh, tearing a jagged gash in the skin that measured over six inches in length and two inches deep. The damage had been extensive and Upstate University’s Chief Hospital Administrator voiced his concerned that the hospital surgeons would have to amputate the mutilated limb.
That revelation had thrown Kaiba into a fit of absolute fury. The enraged CEO had almost lost his voice as he yelled and threatened the poor man with the largest malpractice suit in history if the hospital staff did not save his brother's leg. To top it off, the Chief Hospital Administrator's biggest fear was Mokuba's enormous loss of blood.
It had taken over fifteen minutes for the park's personnel to make their way through the mangled bodies to locate survivors and call the paramedics. Then it had taken another half an hour for the emergency team to fly the injured teenager, via helicopter, to Syracuse's top medical centre. When they had arrived, the hospital's doctors had immediately connected an IV to counter the blood loss only to have the raven-haired teen react violently to the transfusion.
Although Mokuba's blood type was B positive, the medical staff had found out the hard way that the younger Kaiba was Tc-B positive. In other words, the raven-haired teenager had a very rare blood type. So rare, in fact, that no hospital in the world had a supply of the life-giving fluid on hand.
With Seto's consent, the doctors had been forced to use a blood surrogate to sustain Mokuba until the brunette could arrive. Unfortunately, the artificial substance could only provide so much assistance. Plasma proteins and platelets were one thing but the teenager needed white blood cells in order to function properly and in his weakened condition, Mokuba's body wasn't producing enough to stay alive. Even as the surgeons battled to save the damaged limb and set the broken collarbone they were afraid they still might lose the raven-haired teen to infection and blood loss.
The last time Kaiba had spoken with the Chief Hospital Administrator, he and Dr. Kenji had made arrangements to prepare a team to begin the transfusion the moment the brunette arrived. The stoic CEO was Mokuba's only hope. If the younger Kaiba's body rejected Seto's blood then the boy would not survive.
From this moment, forward, it was a race against time and all Kaiba could do was wait. He couldn't make the plane move any faster and they were still nine hours outside of JFK International Airport.
Fatigue set in, once again, and threatened to overwhelm the stoic CEO but Seto pushed it aside wishing he had someone there who could take his mind off things, even if it was only for a few minutes.
Immediately, Kaiba's thoughts focused on Joey. He wondered what Wheeler had done after he'd left. Had the blond stayed? Had he gone home? What was he doing now? Seto wondered if Wheeler was thinking about him the way he was thinking about the blond. If Kaiba had had the foresight to act beforehand, he would have invited Joey to come along. Regrettably, at the time, all Seto could think about was his little brother.
The stoic CEO shook his head, berating himself for such weakness. He should cast aside such thoughts and get back to work. Unfortunately, he'd been unable to focus on anything in particular and had stowed his laptop back in his carry-on case hours ago. The Board of Directors promised to handle daily operations until Kaiba contacted them with more specific instructions and Seto couldn't care less if he assisted the half dozen businessmen right now or not. They were more than capable of running KaibaCorp for a few days, weeks if needed, leaving the brunette with nothing to do but make sure the greedy bastards didn't use this incident as an excuse to take over the company.
With that last thought the door behind the stoic CEO opened and Roland returned to his seat across from his boss. Silently, Kaiba raised a quizzical eyebrow prompting his Personal Assistant to respond.
“I apologize for the interruption, Mr. Kaiba.”
“Anything I need to know about?” The brunette inquired, resting his weary head on his right hand.
“Nothing that directly involves Master Mokuba, Sir.” The towering bodyguard answered truthfully.
Seto sighed at the mention of his little brother's name and he carefully lifted his head to press forefinger and thumb to the bridge of his nose. He gently rubbed the sensitive area before returning to his previous position.
“Has there been any word?”
“No, Sir.” Roland replied. “Last assessment had Master Mokuba still in surgery.”
Kaiba sighed again and slowly closed his sapphire-blue eyes, trying his hardest to chase away the fatigue resting just behind his emotionless façade.
He needed to get to New York. He needed to see his brother and, most importantly, he needed to apologize.
Along with the exhaustion that threatened to consume the brunette was the guilt that followed closely on its heels. Kaiba didn't want the last words spoken to his little brother to be ones said in anger. He prayed to all that was holy that the Fates would give him the chance to make things right.
The second Joey hung up the phone his tiny apartment became a whirlwind of chaos.
The blond quickly explained Roland's instructions to Serenity as his sister helped him to pack. At the same time, between Joey's home phone and his sister's cell, the two siblings managed to call the bank; Yugi; Tristan and their mother. The blond also called Mr. Green at Tech Noir; Mr. Grayson at the Saturday City Herald; his team of contractors that he worked with on the weekend and the head of his department down at the Domino Gazette, whom he delivered papers for.
They managed to explain the situation quickly and efficiently, without wasting too much time, while in Yugi and Tristan case, he just imparted that he had to head to the States for a family emergency and he would call them later with greater details. Although Joey rationalized that he wasn't lying because he didn't disclose which particular family was in crisis.
When that was finished all that was left to do was pack the blonds' two suitcases and his backpack in the trunk of the cab, extract a promise from his sister that Serenity wouldn't mention anything about Kaiba to the Gang and give aforementioned sister a hug good-bye.
The red-haired teenager made her brother promise to call as soon as he arrived in New York while she waved at the blond through the door of the taxi. Joey waved back before settling himself into the brown, vinyl interior and prepared himself for the long journey ahead.
The blond only hoped he was doing the right thing.
