smint45: I thought a nice sweet moment was about due. Yes, Kaiba’s “nightmare” just had to be written. Lol
Author’s Note: Hello, my readers & reviewers! Sorry that it’s been over a month since I’ve updated the story. I started the Puppyshipping ABC’s and my muse jumped over there for quite a spell. This was about half-finished when I started that fan fic.CHAPTER EIGHTSeto sighed in frustration as he looked at his watch for the fifth time. If they didn’t leave soon, the mu…blonde wouldn’t get to see his friends. This didn’t bother him but he did not want to hear Wheeler’s whining in the car. He started to walk away to go drag Wheeler away from the kitchen table when the blonde stepped into the hallway.A quick glance over the shorter male revealed what the holdup was. Joey limped into the entrance hall with his heavy backpack slung over one shoulder. He limped slowly, putting more pressure on his good leg. He could practically feel the heat of Kaiba’s gaze on his lowered head.Joey nearly jumped out of his skin when a hand caught his arm and another came up to pull his backpack down. Joey didn’t protest as Seto took his backpack and hung it down at his side. The blonde shot him a questioning look. Seto rolled his eyes in a response.“I don’t need you hurting yourself more, Wheeler.” Seto glanced down at the bag. “And this thing is heavy. What is in this?”Joey glared. “Do I ask you what’s in your bag?”Seto fought to roll his eyes again. He started for the door. Joey fell in step beside him as they ambled out to the car.Joey let out a low whistle. Never in his mind did he think that he would get a chance to ride in Kaiba’s gorgeous navy blue and dark gray Bugatti Veyron. He didn’t question the hand that took his arm to help him down the short front steps. Joey knew he wasn’t good with stairs right now. After the hand released him, Joey walked to the passenger side door and carefully climbed into the car. He carefully reached back and clicked his seat belt into place. Seto reached through the driver’s side to hand Joey his bag. The blonde placed it down on the floorboard between his legs. He surprised the blonde by passing him his messenger bag which contained his laptop.“Put it on your lap and keep it there. I don’t need it sliding around on the ride and I don’t want you kicking it alongside your brick bag,” Seto told him.Joey frowned when Seto stood back up to talk to Roland who had come out only a moment ago. He latched his hands over the bag protectively. He wouldn’t have kicked Kaiba’s precious laptop. He would have kept his feet still. While Kaiba talked with Roland, Joey thought about his waking up that morning. He had only taken half of a sleeping pill last night and woken up a little early that morning. Like around four. He had been a bit disoriented and figured he must have still been half-asleep.That was the only reason that someone would be lying in bed with him with their arms around him. The arms had felt warm and made him feel protected. He had kept his eyes closed and snuggled his face back down into his pillow. Before he fell back asleep, he thought he felt the body leave. He was jerked out of his thoughts when Seto slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine. Seto fiddled momentarily with the radio before driving out the front gates and onto the road. Joey made a face when he heard one of the local DJs talking about the weather.“Ahh, Kaiba. Really?” Joey asked.Seto smirked at the blonde’s disgruntled face.“Live with it, Wheeler. My car, my radio. This station lists weather, accidents, and news. You’ll live,” Seto told him.Joey stuck his tongue out at the radio and laid his head back against the seat. He watched the passing scenery as the smooth voice of the female DJ informed them it was 10% chance of rain for today. They moved on to accident reports where there seemed to be an accident in the opposite direction. Joey tuned it out until they got to the news reports.“In local news, a recent child abuse trial starts this week. A local father was found beating his teenage son after a mild disagreement.”“Wheeler.”Joey turned his head. “Yeah?”“Change the station. Now.”The DJ would have said more, but Joey’s quick fingers changed the station. Joey quickly flicked through the stations until he reached the one he liked. He turned his head away when music started playing.Seto glanced at the back of Joey’s head as he pulled up to a red light. He was surprised by the other duelist’s choice in radio stations. Instead of something ear-splitting and annoying, Wheeler had chosen a station that played smooth jazz. The soft sounds of a saxophone filled the car.His eyes locked onto the locket hanging around the other male’s neck. He smirked. There wasn’t a moment he hadn’t seen Wheeler wearing it. The male had obviously taken his warning seriously. The light turned green and they were off again. They soon pulled into the school parking lot and into Seto’s reserved parking space. By the time Joey unclicked his seat belt and opened the car door, Seto was already around the car to his side. Without saying a word, Joey handed him his laptop case. With the strap secured on his shoulder, Seto snapped his fingers and held his hand out to Joey. For a minute there, Joey thought of slapping him five but figured that wouldn’t go over well with the CEO. Instead he snagged his backpack with his good hand and handed it up to the brunette. Seto stepped back with both bags so Joey could stand up.Joey caught his reflection in the door window when he closed the door. Most of the bruising was gone. Only a small deep bruise below his eye remained while his hair hid the one above his eye. Most of the cut on his lip was healed but a flick of the tongue across it always reminded him it was still there. He felt the bandages around his ribs through his shirt and the slight sting in his upper back.“Wheeler.”Joey turned his head to Seto who was still standing next to him.“You don’t look any worse than usual,” Seto told him.Somehow, Joey found his words comforting. He cracked a small grin before limping off to the school building. He was pleased that Seto slowed his usual brisk pace so Joey could walk alongside him. Despite them being on school grounds and anyone being able to see them, Seto gently helped the injured youth up the main stairs leading inside.Joey was eternally grateful for Kaiba as he had forgotten how deep into the school their first class was. Seto was tempted to ask Joey if he wanted to stop, but he could see the determination in his face; he wouldn’t accept, even if Seto did ask. When they reached the classroom, Joey’s friends were waiting at the front of the classroom.Seto strode forward past them, shoving Joey’s backpack into Yami’s stomach. Yami made a surprised sound and swore under his breath before placing the backpack down gently.“Joey, man, there you are!” Tristan exclaimed, reaching forward to pat his best friend on the back. The blonde surprised him by quickly jerking out of reach and behind Yugi. Joey shot him an annoyed look before turning a questioning eye to Yugi and Yami.“Dude, didn’t ya tell ‘em?” Joey asked. Both shook their heads.“It was your business, Joey. We figured you’d tell them,” Yugi confessed with a shrug of his shoulders.“Tell us what, Wheeler? How you got that new necklace?” Duke asked, leaning back on one of the desks.Joey blushed. To be honest, he had forgotten he was wearing the thing.“You…uh…guys may wanna sit down for this,” Joey told them.None too surprisingly, none of them chose to sit. Seto, who had set up his laptop at his desk, was eavesdropping on the conversation. He listened as Joey gave them a shortened tale of what had happened and why he had been out for a week. When questioned about Kaiba’s presence, Joey explained that he was staying with him and Mokuba for a while.“Dude, are you serious?! I thought Kaiba hated your guts,” Tristan told him.Joey shrugged.“I ain’t got anywhere else to go right now. The doctors want me in a safe environment and let’s face it; Kaiba’s Mansion is like Fort Knox. Nothing in or out without him knowing,” Joey said, shrugging it off with a laugh.Seto shook his head. If that had been the case, that stupid Social Worker would have never set foot on his property and he wouldn’t have fired a maid. He was mildly surprised Joey didn’t tell his friends about what had set his father off and the real reason Joey was staying at the mansion.“So what…Kaiba gave you a locket as a get well gift?” Duke asked, still focusing on the locket.Seto couldn’t wait to hear the blonde’s answer to this question. He didn’t even bother pretending to work as he leaned back in his chair. Joey chuckled.“I think you must have thrown those dice into your own head, dice-boy. Kaiba give me a gift? Pfft! Yeaaaa, right. Nah, the kid gave it to me,” Joey said, lying easily. The group laughed in agreement and Seto went back to his work. However, it was stopped a few minutes later when Joey’s voice escalated.“You don’t know what the Hell you’re talking about!”Seto’s gaze snapped up. Joey was standing almost nose to nose and staring down at Teá. The usually cheerful teenage girl was glaring right back at him.“I’m just telling you what I believe, Joey,” Teá said.Joey scrunched his nose up like he caught a whiff of a foul smell.“What you believe is wrong. My father smacked me ‘round so hard they had to cart me away in a damn ambulance. You know what, Teá? You go to Hell and while you’re there, tell my dad I said hi.”Teá’s hand flew up to her mouth in shock. The rest of the gathered friends looked equally shocked. Joey blew past the frozen girl and snagged his bag from Yami on his way past him. Joey trailed down the rows to the back row where Kaiba was sitting. He planted himself down in his assigned seat which was between the window and Kaiba.Seto’s gaze shot from Joey to the group. He locked eyes with Yami. The tri-colored youth tilted his head to the side and raised an eyebrow. Seto narrowed his gaze before turning to Joey.“Wheeler.”Joey dug his disguised mini iPad out of his bag. He shifted his desk chair so he was crowded against the window. This way, no one, not even Kaiba, could see what the notebook really was.“She accused me of ditching and rejoining the gang. If she don’t wanna believe me, then that’s her problem,” Joey replied, not looking up.Seto turned his head back to look at Yami. The others were whispering quietly with Teá who looked very mad and was openly glaring at Joey. Seto raised an eyebrow before turning his head back to his computer.“Her loss, Wheeler. If she can’t face facts…ignore her,” Seto told him.Joey nodded in agreement. It was one thing to have a teacher call him a liar. But a close friend like Teá? No. No amount of ignorance could make up for that. Joey looked up at Teá stormed up to his desk. She stood in front of him with her fists clenched at her side.“How dare you? No one calls me a liar,” Teá snarled.Joey gave her a smug look in response. “I just did.”None of them, not even Kaiba, saw it coming. Teá struck so fast it took Joey a few seconds to register why his head was suddenly facing the window. His reflection showed a fresh sting mark on his cheek and the cut on his lip reopened. He brought a hand up to his lip and down to reveal drops of blood on his middle finger.Slowly, Joey turned his head back to the short brunette. There was a burning light in Teá’s eyes. She obviously felt no remorse after having struck him. Past her, their friends stared at them in various states of shock.“I guess that’s how it’ll be then. You choose your damn beliefs over your own friend. Fine. Hope you enjoy your good, spoiled life. Must be nice to be a spoiled brat.”Teá made a warning growl before raising her hand up again. Her friends shouted at her to stop and Joey raised a hand up in front of his face in defense this time. Teá’s hand came down but it never came close to striking Joey. To everyone’s great surprise, her wrist was caught in Seto’s strong grip. Keeping that grip on her wrist, Seto slowly pushed his chair back and stood up. He moved so he was partially standing in between the two.“Let go, Kaiba. This is between me and Joey,” Teá told him.Seto squeezed her wrist, noticing that she winced at the harsh treatment.“Wrong, Gardner. I’m between you and Wheeler. You lay a finger on him again and my lawyer will be between you and Wheeler,” Seto warned her.Teá glared. She tried to move her lethal look to Joey, but Seto blocked her view of him. And Joey had his head down, shielding his face from view.“Go away, Teá. Consider our friendship over,” Joey murmured in a strong voice.Teá was surprised when Seto used the grip on her wrist to twirl her around and shove her away. She stumbled into a desk, catching herself on it to avoid falling. She shot an annoyed look at Seto before giving a sniff and storming away. Ignoring the little twit, Seto turned around to look down at the fresh mark on Joey’s face. He brought a hand up and pressed lightly on the mark, causing Joey to openly wince. Seto removed a handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it to Joey’s bleeding lip.Joey brought his hand up to press it there as Seto removed his hand.“Wheeler.”Joey’s gaze flew up to Seto.“No worse than usual.”Joey smiled with a small chuckle when Seto turned away to sit back down at his desk. Joey realized that that was Kaiba’s way of telling him he looked fine. The other students started filtering into the classroom, some shooting looks at Joey, but glancing away when they got a glare from Kaiba.Once the teacher arrived, the school day started. Joey secretly worked on his online work on his disguised mini iPad. None of his teachers bothered him. Although, had he been looked up more often, he would have noticed a certain brunette glare a hole into the teacher whenever they looked like they were going to call on him (Joey). Yugi and Yami traded off carrying Joey’s backpack for him./……/
When lunch came around, Joey came to several conclusions in the span of only a minute. One, his friends would surely all be sitting together, as per the norm. Two, his friends would most likely try to get him and Teá to reconcile. Third, that wasn’t gonna happen. Ever.
That and he had no money for lunch. Like most everyone else, he left his backpack in the classroom so he decided to go seek out someone he didn’t mind sitting with. He was able to locate Kaiba easily, mostly because the brunette was always in the same place. Seto was underneath one of the bigger trees outside. His laptop was resting on his lap with a notebook being held in one hand. When Joey came up to him, he made sure not to stand in the brunette’s light. He stood there waiting patiently until Seto finally sighed, stopped what he was doing, and turned his gaze up.“What is it, Wheeler?” Seto demanded, slightly irritated.“Mind if I sit with ya?” Joey asked.Seto hiked an eyebrow. The blonde teen wanted to…sit with him? Seto glanced over at the cafeteria. Through the window, he could see the blonde’s group of friends all sitting together. Including the brunette who’s mark still looked very fresh on Joey’s face. Seto surprised both them when he told Joey he could sit down.Smiling, Joey looked around, but then frowned and almost let out a whimper. Seto let out another, more frustrated sigh and rolled his eyes heavenward before looking back up at Wheeler.“I told you could sit, Wheeler. Do you want an engraved invitation?”Joey shot him a look.“What I want is for my ribs not to scream while I’m trying to sit down,” Joey told him. With another sigh, Seto moved his laptop and notebook onto the grass beside him. His hand shot out and snagged the closest arm to him. Joey failed to jerk his wrist out of the tight hold Seto had on them. Seto placed Joey’s hand on his shoulder and firmly yanked the blonde down by grabbing the back of Joey’s good knee.Joey winced and tightened his grip on Seto’s shoulder as he slowly came down on his good knee. Joey bit his bottom lip as his bad knee bent. Seto carefully gripped him until Joey shifted around so he was sitting on the grass beside him. Joey bent down his good knee at an arc facing Seto while his bad one laid out straight. The blonde settled back against the large tree, his shoulder narrowly missing brushing Seto’s.Seto returned his laptop to his lap and passed his notebook to Joey. The blonde shot him a baffled look.“Make yourself useful and hold it,” Seto told him.Joey turned the notebook towards Seto. He noticed that Kaiba could now type much quicker than before. In a way, Joey felt like he was being used, but he found he didn’t mind. He would take this over sitting with that tactless, mud-for-brains Gardner. He still couldn’t believe what she had accused him of.“I’m not buying it.”He wasn’t sure who had been more surprised. Him or a wide-eyed Yugi.“…what?”Snort. “I don’t believe you. You look the same as you did before…when you were in the gang.”It had taken him less than half a second to realize what the female was insinuating. And it had hurt. This woman spouted on and on about the holiness of friendship and here she was not taking one of her friends at his word.“Bet you enjoyed those free days off. Don’t know how you got Kaiba to make it look so good.”Joey was broken out of his thoughts when his hearing aid made a short, double beep sound. He cursed quietly under his breath when he felt the sound go out in his hearing aid.“Ah, damn. Sorry, Kaiba. Give me a minute.”Seto’s gaze moved from the lowered notebook to the blonde. Joey pulled his hearing aid out of his pocket and popped open the battery door. He pulled out a small packet of batteries. Pocketing the dead battery, Joey took out a fresh battery, peeled off the plastic tape, and popped it in. Joey closed the battery door and, after a tiny bit of music played, put it back in his ear.“Good, Wheeler?”Joey nodded. He lifted the notebook back up and Seto turned his attention back to his work. They worked smoothly for about five minutes until Joey’s stomach suddenly gave a great grumble. Joey’s head went down as Seto’s snapped up.“Didn’t you eat, Wheeler?” Seto demanded.“Eating requires food which requires money, Kaiba. Of which I currently have very little. I got to space out my purchases while I’m between jobs,” Joey answered.Truly Seto couldn’t sympathize with the abused teen. It had been too long since his days in the orphanage. Sighing, Seto saved his work and closed it down. He closed the laptop, placed it in his bag and pulled out his lunch. He actually had been planning to skip his lunch today, but it seemed the other teen’s stomach had other plans. He was glad the Chef typically packed two pairs of chopsticks. Seto slipped the lid off his bento box, snatched the notebook from Joey’s hands, and slapped the spare pair into his hand. Joey started down at them in confusion.“I am not explaining to both Dr. Connors’ why you’re not getting three meals a day. Eat, Wheeler.”Joey never thought it would come to a day where he would hear Kaiba tell him to eat. But it was turning out to be one of those kind of days. He purposely switched the sticks to his sore hand, mostly so he could exercise the hand. It felt quite odd sharing – because surely, that’s what this was! – a lunch with Seto Kaiba.Maybe…just maybe they could put their rivaled past…in the past.END OF CHAPTER EIGHTWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
