This dream was different: uncomfortable and cold; not fuzzy, but indiscernible. The cat was there, but it was the only recognizable part of the dream. If it was Bastet, maybe he should follow Atem’s advice and see what she wanted. He followed after her further into the alleway and tried not to give in to the foreboding feeling in the air. She then jumped up on a dumpster lid and sat down, staring at him. “What the hell do you want now?”
She swished her tail and kept staring at him.
“I’m trying. I don’t get it.”
She meowed and swished her tail again, standing up from the lid to walk over to him. He met her at the edge of the dumpster and held his arms out. She climbed into his arms and began to purr. So he held her and walked further down the alleyway. He wasn’t sure how, or why, but once he stepped past the dumpster, he wound up in his office at work. The cat jumped out of his arms and climbed into his chair, circling around to lay down and go to sleep. He smiled at her and shook his head, walking to the other side of his office. Everything was crystal clear. It was definitely his office and looking out the wall of windows on the other side of his desk proved to be just as vivid and clear.
He glanced back at the cat, asleep on his office chair and sighed. He just didn’t get it.

Yuugi was surprised Kaiba agreed to go to the mall after school with him. He did say ‘please’ and he also made sure to make it worth Kaiba’s while, but still. It was a lot to ask of him and he actually agreed. So Yuugi may or may not be taking full advantage of it. Leading him through the food court, he looked back at him and smiled. “I want you to see this store that’s here. They have some cool figurines I think you’d like.”
“I probably own it already.”
“No you don’t. I’ve been all over your house.”
“You haven’t been in the closets.”
“Why would you own something and shove it in a closet?”
“That is the sole purpose of a closet.” Kaiba gave him a strange look. “What do you use closets for?”
“Clothes,” Yuugi laughed and squeezed his hand, “How are you feeling?”
Kaiba looked away from him and took a deep breath. “Really hot, but other than that, I'm fine.”
Yuugi smirked at him. Really hot indeed.
Kaiba turned back and scowled at him. “Stop looking at me like that. It isn’t helping.”
He giggled and turned away. He needed to watch where he was going anyway. It was a Friday night in early November so the mall was packed with people, which he hoped was good for Kaiba. He seemed to handle school just fine, so a place like this should be fine too. They weaved through the crowd until they got to the store he wanted to show Kaiba. The store had a few people in it, but not as many as the main mall did. Yuugi kept his eyes on Kaiba, ready to pull him out of there if he needed to, and tried not to stand too close to him. He didn’t need to be the problem… this time. They looked through the Duel Monster memorabilia and then moved over to look at a new game coming out. Kaiba seemed just as interested in it as Yuugi was. They stayed in the store until the girl who worked there took particular notice of Kaiba.
She started to tell them about the new game and Yuugi glared at her when she got a little too close. Deciding they’d stayed long enough, he pulled on Kaiba’s hand. “I need to get a new arm band. Let’s keep moving.”
Kaiba started to argue then blinked, “Yeah. Yes, lead the way, Mutou.”
So Yuugi moved a little closer to Kaiba, close enough to smell his cologne and feel the need for him, but far enough to move away. Now with Kaiba’s attention, they left the store and went back into the crowded mall. Kaiba sighed, making Yuugi turn back to look at him. “What?”
“Thank you for getting me out of there.”
“I told you, you didn’t need to worry. I’m here.”
Kaiba looked away from him and didn't say anything more until they got to the store he liked to buy his armbands from. Kaiba immediately scoffed. “Wow. I thought you were the only weird one that wore this junk.”
“Hey!”
“How long do we have to stay in here?”
Yuugi laughed and shook his head at him. “It’s not that bad.”
He lead Kaiba over to the counter where they had armbands, chokers, earrings and other accessories. Kneeling down, he picked up an armband that looked like the one Bastet chewed up. When he stood up, he realized Kaiba was nowhere near him. “Oh no… Kaiba!”
“Over here.”
Yuugi almost didn’t hear him, on the other side of the store, hidden by a tall shelf. Running over to the shelf, he stepped into the aisle just in time to see a tall attractive guy around their age with black hair and steel grey eyes an inch away from making out with Kaiba. “Kaiba!”
The guy stopped moving forward and turned to look at him. Yuugi recognized him then. It was the same guy he’d bought his things from for the last 6 months. Atem complained about him always being in the back, but he completely forgot about that. He thought Kaiba would turn to, but he wasn’t responding at all. “Seto come here, please.”
Kaiba turned to look at him while the guy moved forward and kissed his neck. Now he had Kaiba’s attention, but he lost the attention of the guy with the black hair. (What was his name again?) Yuugi felt furious and hurt and panicked. He ran over to Kaiba and grabbed his hand, pulling him out of the guys arms. Doing that turned out to be a little more difficult than he thought it would be. The guy was very attractive, and the closer he got to Kaiba, the brighter his grey eyes were. He almost changed his mind about pulling Kaiba away in favor of staying there with both of them. The only thing that kept him from doing that was a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach. The feeling of hatred watching the guy kiss him. Yuugi didn’t hate anyone or anything but he hated this guy; attractive or not.
They left the store so fast, he didn’t think about the armband still in his hand. When the alarm sounded, he threw it back into the store and kept walking. He got some weird looks from the people he was passing but he just wanted to get as far away from that store and that guy as possible. They made it to the parking garage before Kaiba suddenly stopped walking, making Yuugi spin around and almost fall. Then pulled him into his chest.
“Why are you stomping away to the wrong garage?” He kissed him, briefly, grinning ear to ear.
Yuugi turned his head to look at the garage sign while Kaiba took that opportunity to kiss his neck. Sure enough, he was on the wrong side of the mall. “Well that’s great.”
He laughed and ran his teeth over Yuugi’s neck. “So? Why are you mad?”
“I’m not mad. I just wanted to get away from- I mean I wanted to get you away from... I’m trying to help you out, remember?”
“So you’re not jealous?” he asked, brushing his lips against Yuugi’s neck.
Yuugi tried to deny it but the more he thought about it the more he realized that was the feeling in his stomach. He was jealous. Very jealous, and that was a problem because he didn’t remember emotionally deciding on that yet. Since Kaiba brought it up, and he had his mouth on him and his arms around him, he wasn’t in a position to run from it. “Well yeah, but...”
When Kaiba leaned back and looked into his eyes, Yuugi shivered, realizing it might be too late to stop this. “Do you want me all to yourself?”
“Yes.”
“You have me to yourself now.”
Yuugi had a hard time thinking. All he wanted was Kaiba; right there, all to himself. He was right. So he wrapped his arms around his neck and poured himself into his passionate kisses. Kaiba’s hands snaked under his shirt and roamed over his back and shoulders, pulling him closer, and Yuugi gasped feeling how hard he was; how hard he was making him.
He pulled away to kiss along his jaw, down his neck, chest and abdomen. He knelt down in front of him, staring up at him while his mouth watered at the thought of being able to taste him. He slid his fingers under Kaiba’s belt buckle and-
“Kaiba? Hey!” Tea called from the door to the mall, “We thought we saw you!”
Both Yuugi and Kaiba froze, looking at each other with flushed cheeks. Then Yuugi stood up slowly. He wanted to kiss him on his way up, but that would just make things worse. His mouth still watered and he had to use the back of his hand to wipe his lips. Kaiba noticed and smirked at him.
“Where’d Yuugi go?” Tristan asked.
“He’s on the other side of Kaiba,” Ryou giggled and Yuugi could hear him walking over to them. “Hey Yuugi!”
Ryou smiled at him, but it was almost evil. He was going to get so much shit for this when they got home. But Tea and Tristan hadn’t caught on. Maybe he could play it off. “Hey Ryou! What are you guys doing here?”
“Doing some shopping,” Ryou said sweetly.
“We didn’t expect to see you here of all people, Kaiba.” Tea laughed. “This isn’t exactly your kind of place.”
“Yeah I kind of talked him into…” Yuugi turned to look at Kaiba when he noticed him staring at Ryou in a similar way that he looked at the guy in the store.
He felt jealousy welling up inside of him again. So angry and so hurt, but he didn’t know what to do. He tried to think about it, but the only thing that came to him in that moment was Joey making a snide comment about the only way to get him to listen was to hit him. Next thing he knew, he’d hit Kaiba in the arm, pulling his attention back to him exactly like he’d wanted. But when he did get Kaiba’s attention again, he just smirked at him, like he had him where he wanted him. Then he went right back to staring, no, leering at Ryou.
Tea and Tristan were shocked, and he could see their open mouths and wide eyes out of the corner of his eye. Was it because he hit him or did they see Kaiba not even trying to hide how he was looking at Ryou too? Then he turned to look at Ryou. He didn’t look away from Kaiba either. Instead, his eyes darkened and he licked his lips.
That was enough for Yuugi.
He backed away, fearing that he’d made a terrible mistake. “I gotta go. I’m sorry.”
------
Kaiba wasn’t really sure what was going on. Tea, Tristan, Ryou and Yuugi were all there, all about the same distance away from him. It should have kept him switching, like he always did. It worked in the mall (for the most part), it worked at school, it worked every other time. So why the fuck wasn’t it working in the damn parking garage?
The frustrating thing? It was working at first. He was able to calm down from Yuugi riling him up. He was able to think and be himself for a moment. Switching his attention between the several people in the parking garage, never lingering on any one of them, like he did everywhere else, helped him to regain enough self so that he could help Yuugi out of the awkward situation they both found themselves in. He moved his attention from Yuugi back to Tea, back to Yuugi and switched between them until he quickly hit a snag. When Ryou started talking to Yuugi, his attention went from Ryou, to Yuugi, and then back to Ryou. Just like when Atem and Yuugi were together with him, he was hot, hard and already thinking of a million ways he could have both of them. Without realizing it, he’d picked and he couldn’t change his mind.
Unfortunately, Yuugi and Ryou were not ‘together’ or on the same page as him at all. He didn’t even know what page he was on. Well that wasn’t exactly true. He was on the page where Yuugi was in his lap and he got to watch Yuugi enjoy Ryou’s beautiful mouth while his cock was thrust deep inside of him. And once he was on that page, it was the only page that existed. He knew how much Yuugi would love that, how much Ryou would love that and he couldn’t get out of his head how much he would love that.
He felt like he’d had Ryou convinced, for a minute there, when his eyes sparkled and his lips curled into a hungry smile. So when he felt Yuugi hit him, he smirked down at him, just positive that he’d be even easier to convince. After all, he wore both Kaiba and Atem out every day of the week he’d stayed over. If anyone would be open to this, it would be him. So he looked back at Ryou to bring him closer because Yuugi was already there, and Ryou was always, just too far away. Ryou licked his lips and Kaiba knew he was on the same page.
Hearing Yuugi say he had to go and turning to see the hurt in his eyes, was like ice water in his face. He was so stunned, he didn’t think to stop him until he was out of sight, lost in the crowded mall. What happened? He turned to look at Ryou, who dodged his glance and rubbed his upper arm. Kaiba scowled at him. “Stop that.”
Ryou looked up without lifting his head. “Stop what?”
“Stop feeling bad this wasn’t your fault.” Then Kaiba started to walk back into the mall after Yuugi. Maybe he could catch him.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea, Kaiba?” Tea asked, stepping forward.
“You got a better one, Gardner?”
She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone, “Yeah actually I do.”
She dialed a number on it and put her hand on her hip looking up at the garage lights. “Atem! Emergency. Did Yuugi call- Yeah… Okay. That’s actually perfect. Just make sure he’s okay. Yeah you too!” She hung up and smirked at him. “We can take you to your car.”
“Where’s Yuugi?”
“Atem is on his way to pick him up.”
“I need to-”
“You need to let him calm down. He’s really upset.”
Ryou walked around Tea to stand in front of him, but Kaiba took a step back; he’d had enough for one day. Ryou grimaced, and Kaiba started to get mad that he couldn’t seem to do anything right. “We’ll take you to your car Kaiba, then you can go talk to Yuugi.”
“Fine.”
----
Atem sat on his bed with Yuugi sobbing in his arms. He was still a little fuzzy as to why, but he knew Yuugi was upset so he let him cry. Atem waited patiently for him to say something. After all he was rather comfortable with him lying in his arms like he was.
“I feel like an idiot.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought I could handle this. I thought if I was there with him, he’d only see me, but that’s not what happened at all.”
Yuugi went on to explain about the people in the stores and the guy who was trying to make out with Kaiba. He told him about being jealous and Kaiba knew he was. Then he had the bad luck of being discovered by their friends. One of those friends being Ryou. The more Atem listened to Yuugi talking about what happened, the bigger his smile grew.
“Is this funny to you?”
“No. It is not funny at all,” Atem said, still smiling, “but I want you to hear yourself. You are upset because someone who literally cannot stop themselves, is unable to stop themselves.”
“We were all there! It wasn’t like that.”
“Are you sure?”
“It’s never been like that before.”
Atem shook his head. “He’s cursed by a cat goddess whom you keep giving milk and sneaking chicken from the table to, imi-ib. I don’t think ‘it’s always been like that’ is a good reason to be confident in your understanding of this curse.”
Yuugi wiped the tears away and sat up, a look of confusion all over his face. “So wait, you think that the curse is changing?”
Atem started to answer him but thought better of it. Changing? Maybe not. But it’s boundaries and power none of them really understood. “I wholly understand how you feel,” he said finally, brushing his fingertips over Yuugi’s cheek. “It hurts. I know, remember? And I don’t like any of that either, but we aren’t in a relationship with him. Cursed or not, he doesn’t belong to us.”
“We stayed for a week at his house.”
“And didn’t talk about it at all.”
“I didn't think we needed to.”
Atem snickered, “Apparently, you always need to. I’ve been in love with you for so long, Yuugi. I thought it was fairly obvious. And so did Tea and Kaiba and Joey and-”
“Yeah okay I get it.” Yuugi blushed and smiled down at the bed.
“It doesn’t matter how obvious it is to you. Others have a very different way of seeing the world and Kaiba is no exception. Sometimes we get lucky, but it’s best to have your intentions announced.”
“Yeah, but what if I’m right? I can’t handle that.”
“Can’t handle what? That he likes Ryou? Is that really such a bad thing?”
Yuugi looked at him like he had 6 heads, “Yes it’s a bad thing!”
“Why?”
“Well um. What uh... What about Bakura and Malik?”
“What about them?”
“Well you, Urgh! You’re being impossible.” Yuugi turned away from him and buried his hands in his hair, leaning over to prop his elbows up on his knees.
Atem watched him for a moment then looked down at Bastet who jumped on to his chest. He scratched behind her ears and listened to her pur for a moment before glancing at Yuugi. “Would you like my opinion and advice, or would you like me to be supportive?”
Yuugi lifted his head and rest his chin on his fingers, “I’m going to regret it, but I guess advice.”
“I think you’re jealous because you’re afraid Kaiba doesn’t share your feelings. And you’re afraid he’s going to change his mind and move on to someone else.”
“I’m not scared anymore. I’m.. hurt because he actually did. Right in front of me.” Tears fell from Yuugi’s eyes and it hurt him to watch. He reached up and brushed them away, smiling.
“I’d love more than anything to agree with you, my sweet imi-ib, except: he isn’t your boyfriend. He hasn’t rebuked your feelings, and doesn’t have a single clue to how you feel about him. He never mentioned he wouldn’t like anyone else, and as a matter of fact, might have said and acted towards the opposite. But most importantly, and I do say this with all the love I have for you,” Atem said, leaning closer and putting his fingers under Yuugi’s chin to make him look up, “He. Is. Cursed.”
Yuugi giggled at him and his smile was loving and thoughtful. Atem laid his hand back down on the bed. They just sat like that for a moment before Atem’s words really sank in. “You know what? You’re right.”
“Of course I am.” Atem smirked, continuing to pet a loudly purring Bastet.
He wiped his face off and sighed, “When should I talk to him? I’m afraid I embarrassed him. I’m pretty sure I embarrassed myself too… Great now I have to talk to Tea and Ryou too don’t I?”
“I’d go now to talk to Kaiba. No time like the present, and you can speak with your friends tomorrow.”
Bastet didn’t like that idea at all. She growled at him and hissed. Yuugi leaned back away from her and Atem held his hands out so she was free to move if she wanted to. Yuugi sighed. “Or maybe not…”
She got up and ran under the bed again.
Atem turned to look at Yuugi, still staring after Bastet. “You can see him tomorrow too I guess.”
He turned back and forced a smile. “Okay.”
Atem shifted the blankets on his bed and held them up for Yuugi to climb in with him. He was very happy when he did. They laid there together snuggling until Atem kissed the top of Yuugi’s head. “You know, we haven’t really talked about it either.”
“You know how I feel about you.”
“Yes, but that doesn’t define our relationship.”
Yuugi leaned back and smirked, “What other possible definitions could it mean?”
“We can still be friends.”
“I want more than that.”
Atem grinned, brushing Yuugi’s hair back. “It can also mean marriage.”
“We’re not old enough for that,” Yuugi chortled.
He raised his brow. “Not old enough?”
“Yes we’re still in school. It’s not a good time.”
“People married younger than we are in Egypt. Why the sudden desire to wait?”
Yuugi giggled and Atem had to admire the blush on his cheeks. “Because back then, you had to find someone quick to help keep a roof over your head and food on the table. Now you’re on your own and have to have all of that before you get married. Besides, it’s difficult to find your true love. It takes a lot of time.”
“Not for us.”
“Exactly.” Yuugi kissed him. “You don’t want to make everyone else look bad, do you?”
Atem laughed. “I suppose not.”
“So somewhere between friends and married.”
“Courting,” Atem said, and Yuugi heartily laughed, making him laugh too. “What’s so funny? That is what it is called, isn’t it?”
“It’s called dating.”
“What is courting then?”
“It’s an old word that means dating.”
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
Yuugi pushed himself up to climb on top of him. Looking up at him, Atem paid rapt attention to Yuugi’s adoring gaze. “Well we don’t actually ‘court’ anymore. We stay home and hang out on the sofa watching a movie. That’s not really courting.”
“I don’t like the idea of ‘dating’. I get the feeling, sleeping with everyone the first day you meet them is ‘dating’. At least, if your television shows have anything to say about it.”
Yuugi burst into laughter. “Yeah probably.”
“I still say my way is best. It’s a good combination of all of those things.”
“You’re way?”
“Yes. Just marry me.”
Yuugi pushed himself up on his arms and frowned down at him. “I just said the only reason that worked before was-”
“It never worked for me before.”
“Exactly,” Yuugi said, tilting his head to the side and making a face Atem wasn’t sure what it meant, “It didn’t work because you were too young.”
“It didn’t work because it wasn’t with you.”
Yuugi sat all the way up and sighed. He tried to say something but kept sighing more like he couldn’t quite come up with a good argument to that. Then he shook his head and looked back down at him. “You-you can’t… Atem do you have any idea what you're saying? This is a huge deal and you’re saying it like it’s just…”
“It is a huge deal.”
Yuugi then gave him a sneaky grin and laid back down on his chest; and it honestly shocked him. “So where’s my ring?”
“What ring?”
He sat back up and his expression changed right back to shock and confusion. “See this is my point you don’t even know what your saying.”
“I know exactly what I’m saying. Why is this so hard for you to believe?”
“Because. We-I, I mean. What about Kaiba?”
“Does he need some kind of ring?”
Yuugi started laughing again and rubbed his eyes. Then he let his hands fall down to his sides and stared down at him, like he might read something in his expression or body language that this was all a big joke. When he didn’t find anything, he became very serious. “Do you really want me to marry you? Or is this one of those ‘I don’t have a clue how this works for you, but it worked this way in Egypt just fine’ kind of things?”
That had Atem laughing. He said that to Yuugi all the time. Especially when he complained about technology around the shop. Like how metal shouldn’t go in the microwave, the tv remote had to face a certain way, and the toaster oven burned everything no matter what temperature it was on. He’d usually follow his rant on it with how what they’d done in Egypt was perfectly fine and he didn’t see why they needed all the contraptions. So he understood Yuugi’s trepidation, but this wasn’t anything like that.
“Look under the bed.”
Yuugi narrowed his eyes at him, then leaned over to feel around under the bed. Then he stiffened and Atem grinned at him as he rose back up with a black box in his hand. “Oh wow… You are being serious.”
“I told you I was.”
“But… we can’t get married now. We-we’re in school.”
“I know.” He sat up and wrapped his arms around Yuugi’s waist, while he kept the black box pressed to his chest. “I don’t like it, but I know, imi-ib.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because I want to marry you. If you accept, you’re my fiance. Correct?”
Yuugi’s eyes were full of tears and he hadn’t even looked in the box. “Yeah.”
“And we can wait however long you want to actually get married. It’s more than friends and less than married like you wanted right?”
Yuugi sat there in silence, looking like he was trying to wrap his mind around what was going on. So Atem waited patiently for him to say something. He smiled thinking that he was happy Bastet hissed at them. If Yuugi had left and talked to Kaiba, he might not have went through with this. It was what he’d wanted, sure, but seeing Yuugi happy with Kaiba was also something he’d wanted.
He opened the box and looked side. Then, shut it and pulled it to his chest, staring down at Atem like he saw something impossible. He took a deep breath and opened the box again, then shut it and pulled it to his chest. He did it a third time, before Atem snickered, “Do you like it?”
He opened the box again and shut it again. “It’s- I mean- I… How did you get this? We looked for one of these for days and couldn’t find a single one.”
He opened the box slowly this time and touched the golden ring inside of it. Atem always liked this ring. It was small and golden, with a lapiz scarab embedded in the top. His father wore it throughout Atem’s life. He’d never seen it off of him. It wasn’t as spectacular as some of the other jewelry pieces were, but Yuugi had always loved it. Atem suspected Yuugi liked it because of the story he’d told about it when they were in the museum. After all, it was a story he’d always loved his father telling him.
His mother had it made for her by a priestess of Isis, and whenever his father would leave the palace, for any reason, she’d give him the ring and would say ‘so you can find your way back to me.’ The first few times she did that his father laughed it off. But one day he was attacked and left stranded just outside of the city. When he finally came back to the palace, he told them of Isis coming to his aid and guiding him back. From that moment on, whenever either of them left the palace, they'd give the ring and say ‘so you can find your way back to me.’ His mother gave it to his father the day she died so he could find her in the after life.
Some graverobbers took the ring at some point after his father died, and it found its way back to the palace. Atem remembered it appearing on his bed one day. He wore it to remind himself of them every day. Seeing it in the museum was… complicated, but he couldn’t be happier now.
“I didn’t.”
“What do you mean you didn’t?”
“This is the original.”
Yuugi almost dropped the box and when he caught it he hugged it to his chest again, terrified. “You- how? Did you take it from the museum?!”
“Ishizu gave it back to me. It is mine after all.”
Yuugi finally opened up the box and got the ring out. He held it in his hands like it was made of glass. “I-” His jaw quivered and he shook his head, “I can’t accept this.”
“Why not?”
“Because. It’s your mom’s. I know how much this means to you.”
He just kept shaking his head staring down at it until Atem reached up and cupped the side of his face. “Yuugi, our adventures have just started and I want to make sure you make it back to me. I can think of no other who deserves this ring more. She’d want you to have it. Will you marry me?”
He took a sharp breath and leaned into Atem’s palm. “Yes, but you’re going to be waiting a long time.”
“I have waited for thousands of years. I obviously have the time.” Then he pulled Yuugi back down on him and kissed him. Looking up at him, he grinned, “And technically we’re already married by my standards.”
“What does that mean?”
“You gave up the puzzle, moved me in and are taking care of me. You’re already married to me.”
Yuugi laughed and wrapped his arms around him so tight Atem had trouble breathing. But he didn’t want him to move.
