Disclaimer: I do not own YuGiOh!, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
And thus we have arrived at the final chapter. Once more, I will break your hearts with this, so please brace yourselves. This was actually written only a few weeks after the first one; strangely both chapters concided with my grandparents' deaths, who each passed away mere days after I had penned the chapters. So, this one as well as the first chapter are dedicated to them.
Here, Boy Geroge will see us out with his cover version of Everything I own.

83. Letting go
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, you kept me warm
You gave my life to me
You set me free, set me free
“This morning, the body of Kaiba Seto, CEO and president of Kaiba Corporation was put to rest on Domino City Public Cementary. He died last weak protecting his brother Mokuba from the fire which consumed part of their mansion. Investigation revealed that the fire had been an assault on the CEO and his family; obviously his house had been triggered with an explosive device which led to the tragic event. Kaiba Seto was the inventor of both the DuelDisc and VR chamber, his ideas revolutioned the entire holographic technology. His untimely death is not only a great loss for his friends and family, but for software design worldwide. Kaiba Seto leaves behind his younger brother Mokuba and his husband of two years, Jounouchi Katsuya. He was 23.”
Of all the years I ever knew
Those finer ones I spent with you
There were no tears left.
Standing next to one another, Katsuya and Mokuba watched the center of both their lifes being lowered into the ground in a black, silver engraved urn.
Katsuya sobbed once, hard, when the first shovel of soil hit the polished surface and Mokuba swayed a little, when the priest murmured the final blessings.
Otherwise, the graveyard was quiet and abandoned.
I would give everything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
~*The hall was almost bursting with people, yet an eerie silence muffled even the faintest of sounds.
One by one the mourners came to say their final goodbyes to Seto, who lay in his cedar wood cask, donned with a white kimono, hands folded over his chest.
“He looks so peaceful” hushed Mokuba. Katsuya gave a sad smile.
“He’s beautiful. He always is. Always will be.”
Shizuka and Honda walked up to them, the young woman cradling her firstborn in her arms. Handing the sleeping Hitomi over to her husband, she pulled her ani into a tight embrace.
“I’m so sorry” she whispered, before letting go of the blond and turning to Mokuba.
“Otouto- “
The raven-haired teen threw his arms around her neck and sobbed hysterically into the offered shoulder.
Honda and Katsuya watched the scene sadly, then the brunet lay an arm around his best friend.
“I-““He’s gone, Honda.”
The other man nodded, but Katsuya didn’t even notice.
“Seto is gone. I-I swore to always keep him safe and happy, and now he is..gone.”
A tear pearled out of Katsuya’s dull brown orbs, then another and another, until an endless stream ran over the blond’s cheeks.
“I-I couldn’t save him, Honda, I was right there and couldn’t save him. He-he died in my arms because I couldn’t keep my promise.”
Katsuya clung to Honda’s shirt, choked sobs whacking his body as he sunk to his knees, grief and pain finally overwhelming him, even as Hiroto hugged him tightly and let his own tears seep into Katsuya’s robe.
You taught me how to cry
I don't know why, just don't know why
You told those lies to me
You set me free, you set me free
It was just the three of them now.
Katsuya gave Mokuba’s hand a reassuring squeeze and nodded.
Stepping forth, the teen came to stand in front of his brother’s body. Letting his fingers ghost over the elder one’s pale complexion, he whispered:
“I-I never got to tell you thank you for all the things you did for me. I..never got to show you how much I loved you, or how much the…sacrifices you made in order to keep me safe and sound, meant to me. And now-and now-I’ll never be able to.”
Sobbing, he bent down and pressed his lips against Seto’s forehead, shivering slightly at how cold it felt.
Giving a sad smile, he choked:
“I love you, onii-sama. And thank you for my life.”
A hand on his shoulder made him face Katsuya, the blond’s face ashen and void as his eyes.
Mokuba moved aside, allowing his brother-in-law some privacy.
For the longest time, Katsuya just stood there, taking in every single detail of his husband’s still form, before reaching out and tenderly wiping away the deep brown strands framing his closed eyes.
They were as silky as he remembered, yet somewhat brittle and dry.
Katsuya swallowed a sob, then hushed:
“I-I just came to say sorry. For everything. For not realizing sooner what you meant to me, for not clueing into the danger you –we-were in, for..not being able to stop my father.”
Another gulp, and this time Katsuya clearly had to fight for control.
“For not being able to..save you. Seto, I know you know that I would have happily given my life to save you, but-but…”
He sniffled, wiping away the wetness that threatened to soil the perfect white of his groom’s attire.
Shaking his head, he muttered:
“How-how can you do this to me-to us, Seto? How can you leave the two people who care the most about you behind? Why do you have to hurt us like this? Why did you have to leave?”
Again a pause, then Katsuya lowered his head and whispered into Seto’s ear:
“Aishteru, Kaiba Seto. May come what may, I will never love someone else. I’m yours, I always was to begin with and always will be. Itsumademo.”
He placed one last, chaste kiss on Seto’s lips, salty driplets raining on the pale cheeks; then Katsuya grasped Seto’s left hand and, spreading the clam fingers, removed the silver ring and placed it on top of his own.
After he had rearranged both hands in their original position, Katsuya gave his koi a warm, somewhat broken smile.
“I’ll keep this and return it to you, when we meet again. At least that’s one promise I can keep.”
He made space for the two undertakers coming to shut the cask. Just as the cover was loosened, Katsuya stopped them and rushed once more to Seto’s side, hushing:
“This is not farewell, Seto-chan, but merely good-bye. Wait for me. I’ll find you, wherever you are, and then nothing can tear us apart ever again.”
The lid closed with a soft clacking, the sound echoing in the hollowness of the two young men’s shattered hearts.~*
Of all the years I ever knew
Those finer ones I spent with you
It had been two weeks, and he was still not better.
Everybody else moved on, but Katsuya just spent his waking hours sitting at Seto’s desk or on their bed, gazing out the windows, as if he could find the missing part of his soul in the clouds and sky.
Finally, after nigh on one month, he got a wake-up call from the least expected person.
Kicking the door to the master bedroom open, Mokuba came storming in and, grabbing his giri no ani by the collar, shook him none too gently.
“That’s enough, Jounouchi Katsuya, snap out of it! You can’t spend the rest of your life staring holes in the air, never mind how much you loved Seto! Don’t you think I miss him too? He-he is-was my brother, the only family I had left, and now he’s gone, but do you see me being in a flunk the whole time? No, I keep on going on, because I know that-that’s what he would want, for both of us- and that he would do the sa-same if the roles were re..re-oh gods, Setooo!”
With a pained wail, the raven-haired teen sank into Katsuya’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably, even as the blond hugged him close and rocked them both gently.
Several minutes later, Mokuba had calmed down so far that he could continue:
“I-I’m president of Kaiba Corp now, officially after my eighteenth birthday, but they put me in charge anyway.”
Blood-shot, blue-grey eyes gazed anxiously up at him.
“O-onegai, Katsuya, come back. If not for me, then at least for Seto. Remember, you promised.”
He lowered his head, a few stray tears rolling down his cheeks.
“I-I can’t do this, not without you at my side, anyway. Onegai…onii-chan.”
Amber eyes settled on the weeping teen’s features, somewhat perplexed about the endearing honoration, then a tentative, sad half-smile appeared on the blond’s face.
“Don’t worry, Mokuba. I’m here for you, for as long as you need me. I swear.”
He paused, then added:
“There’s just one more thing I have to do.”
Blinking at the sudden change of tone in his voice, Mokuba looked into Katsuya’s face -and gasped at the hard, unforgiving expression on this one’s normally gentle features.
For a second, the younger Kaiba swore his elder brother was glaring through the blond’s eyes.
I would give everything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to hold you once again
It was cold, even for April.
Shivering, the man pulled his shoulders up and gazed down at the murky waters surrounding the dock.
He flinched slightly, when all of a sudden a voice next to him declared:
“If you’re waiting for Kawashiro, he’s not coming.”
Turning his whole body towards the speaker, the elder man couldn’t help but stare.
“Ka-Katsuya, what are you doing here? How-?”
Jounouchi senior caught himself, then gave a cold smirk.
“I see. You found out about my and Kawashiro’s little plan and decided on avenging your precious Seto. So you got rid of my associate and are now out to kill me, ne?”
He didn’t get the reaction he wanted from his son; no flinch, no glare, not the slightest amount of pain flashing across the blond’s features.
Instead, Katsuya stuck a cigarette between his lips, lit it, inhaled deeply and, releasing the smoke, explained:
“I didn’t kill him. There was no need for that.”
For the first time in years, their eyes met, and Jounouchi-san felt a shiver run down his spine at how dull and empty and -cold his son’s amber orbs were.
“You never learn, don’t you? Making deals with the yakuza? I told them that you and Kawashiro weren’t planning on returning the money or equipment they lent you, but rather grab what’s left and head out of Japan with the next plane.”
He took another drag from his cigarette and continued:“I heard they can be pretty..inventive when punishing traitors.”
If there's someone you know
That won't let you go
And is taking it all for granted
You may lose them one day
Someone take them away
And you don't hear a word they say
Balling his fists in anger, his father glared at him.
“How-how dare you do that? How dare you rat out your own father? Don’t you have any sense of honor or for family? You practically sentenced me to death with that act! How-how can you be so cruel-“
“You’re not my father” interrupted him Katsuya.
“Well, biologically maybe, but otherwise, I would have been better off at an orphanage or a foster family than with you. When you killed Seto, you killed me as well. I have no more reason to live.”
Dark brown eyes narrowed in hatred.
“If that were true, then why are you still here? Why not just end it-“
“Because I made a promise. That’s the one thing binding me to this world. And unlike you, I’m always true to my word.”
In the distance, the screeching of tires could be heard. Paling, his father gazed in direction of the sounds.
“You might want to hurry up. They’ll be here any minute.”
A smirk, barely there, but a smirk nonetheless, curled the left corner of Katsuya’s mouth.
“Don’t worry. Once you get over the initial panic, it’s quite nice. Like dying in your lover’s arms.”
The elder man faced the dark wetness lingering beneath the planks seperating him from his fate. He took a deep breath, then locked eyes with his son one last time.
“I know what you want to hear, but I won’t say it, because it would be a lie. I’m not sorry.”
For a couple of moments, the surface of the water shivered, rings spreading across it, and settled again.
Katsuya calmly finished his cigarette, then flicked the butt into the water and rasped:
“Neither am I.”
He never once looked back, as he walked up to his approaching Mercedes.
I would give everything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to hold you once again

And with that last cutting of lose ends, the story finishes. But there is still the epilogue, before we can finally leave the story.
