Chapter 9 - End Game
Marik walked the streets of Domino absently, not really paying attention to where he was going. Kaiba walked at his side, pointing out things that he hadn't
seen the first time he was in the city as if this was a casual stroll. It was anything but that, however . . . several days had passed since brother and sister had
come to Domino, and that time had been spent planning. Now they were ready for action . . . all they had to do was draw Yami out, which required a
tempting target.
They all figured that Yami wouldn't be able to resist his two greatest rivals walking alone in the most deserted part of town. At least Marik hoped that would
be the case . . . he did not relish going one on one with Yami in his current condition, bereft of the power that had made him the Pharaoh's equal for at least
a short time. That would be suicide . . . and although he had more sins to pay for than he ever could in this life time, he wasn't looking forward to the
afterlife just yet.
Seto's breathe suddenly whooshing out of the tall brunette caused him to look up . . . and freeze as he spied the shadows that were slowly surrounding
them.
"He's here," Seto whispered, his voice carefully neutral as the darkness swirled around them and began to wind up the buildings and various other items
littering the streets.
"So I'd noticed," Marik replied . . . and then shivered when a dark chuckle answered them.
"Indeed I am, Seto Kaiba. Come to continue our little game?" Yami's voice came from all sides, and they still could not see the man, even after they both
scanned the surrounding area.
"I came to put an end to it!" Kaiba hissed. "You've done enough . . . where's the true Yami?"
"He is here . . . with me. So is Yugi . . . but they have both decided they do not want to play right now, so I must satisfy my urges with less pleasant
company." Marik's eyes widened as he suddenly spied thier adversary. It was becoming apparant that this was definitely not Yami . . . besides the eyes, the
form seemed to be slowly warping, flickering in and out of existence. One minute the familiar form of Yami would be there . . . the next second merely an
amorphous darkness with coals for eyes. And it's condition was less than pristine . . . it appeared ragged and drawn out, a maniacal grin on it's features
when they could be seen. "Perhaps I will even let you see them . . . before I kill you both." The dark Yami approached them slowly, the darkness growing
with every step until it had engulfed them all as Yami stopped several paces away from the pair.
"Marik," he hissed, blood eyes fixing on the blonde. "Still devoid of your own darkness, I see. Such a pity . . . I envied him his freedom even as Yami kept
me locked away so that he could protect these foolish mortals from himself. I was sorry to see him banished . . . he could have provided endless days of
amusement for me." The shadow Yami stepped closer, his breath whispering across skin as he leaned closer. "You feel . . . incomplete, without him, don't
you? As if part of your soul has gone wandering . . . well do I know this feeling. But my pain will end . . . and soon, so shall yours." Marik spun away as
metal glinted in the darkness, Yami leaning back with a cold laugh as he flicked the knife from hand to hand. "I would not end it so soon . . . I have not had
my pleasure yet," the dark whispered.
"Yami!" Kaiba growled . . . and froze as those demented orbs turned their attention to him.
"You, Kaiba, have no right to address me so commonly," Yami hissed, stepping away as Kaiba brought the Rod in front of him. "Think to use that again,
do you? You have no control over it . . . you got lucky the last time, and this time I will not be so unwary." Kaiba gasped as the Rod suddenly flew out of
his hand . . . directly into Yami's. The spirit sighed with pleasure as the power of the item flowed through him, revitalizing him. "Ah . . . yes . . ." he
groaned, his eyes half closing in joy. "I needed this . . . that stubborn weakling has been slowly regaining his strength and eating away at my own, thanks to
that little brat he calls a hikari." Marik noticed the dark's hand drift towards the Puzzle as he said this, and his eyes widened as he spied the gaping hole in
the front of the item. His form stabilized even as they watched.NT>
"We have to get the Rod away from him . . ." he whispered to Kaiba, who nodded. They both stumbled back in shock when Bakura appeared out of
nowhere, tackling the dark from behind.
"GET THE DAMN ROD!" the thief snarled, struggling to pin Yami beneath him as he smacked the Rod out of the shadow's hands. Kaiba scrambled after
it . . . and howled as he was suddenly hefted into the air to be held dangling by chains from his wrists. Bakura screamed suddenly, staggering back from the
dark with a hand clenched to his stomach, blood dripping steadily from the member as he pressed it to the open wound. Yami stood slowly, licking the
blood from the knife absently as he turned to face Marik.
"Two down . . . one to go . . ." he whispered, a grin chilling Marik's blood in his veins. The blonde dashed towards the Rod, his momentary discomfort
with the nearness of the item forgotten in his desperation. He reached it just as a chain whipped out of the shadows at him, forcing him to duck as he
snatched up the Rod . . . and promptly lost all sense of himself.
"Two can play at that game, shadow Yami," Malik snarled, blonde hair rising above his head in a soft wind as he found himself once again in possession of
both the Rod and his annoying other's body.
P>
"So . . . you live still," Yami murmured, blood red eyeing ing cold as he studied the dark Egyptian before him. "This should prove most amusing . . . let us
see which one of us is strongest." He smiled as Malik drew the hidden blade that the Rod carried, caressing his own summoned blade absently as he
watched the demented dark approach. Blades flashed in the dim light, lightning crackling around the two dark's as they fought, battling back and forth
across the small expanse of the Shadow Realm.
Intent on the battle, Kaiba nearly failed to notice the figures that appeared a short distance from him. The two lay unconscious, huddled together in what
appeared to be a glass enclosure.
"Joey and Tea," he murmured . a . and gasped as the chains holding him suddenly disappeared, dropping him unceremoniously to the ground. Bakura
helped him stand, still pressing a hand to his wound, gasping for breath. The Ring was in full evidence around his neck, glowing brightly as he tapped into
it's power.
"We have to get out of here," the thief gasped. "There is no telling what will happen between those two . . . and with Malik back in control, it could be
worse than anything we had anticipated." Together, the two men staggered towards the glass prison. Bakura dismissed it summarily, slinging Tea's limp
form over his shoulder as Kaiba did the same with Joey. He jumped when Bakura suddenly reached out and grabbed his arm, before staggering at the
sudden brightness of the daylight sun when the thief summarily brought them back to reality.
"Over here!" Tristan shouted, running up from otheother side of the dark sphere that had appeared in the middle of the street. "What happened?" he asked
anxiously, taking Joey's still form from Kaiba as the millionaire sank to his knees.
"Malik . . . Malik has taken over Marik and has the Rod. He and Yami are battling it out even now . . ." the brunette perepered, his eyes going to the sphere
he had been inside moments before.
"I had feared this would happen," Ishizu murmured as she looked over Tea carefully.
"What do you mean, you feared this would happen?" Bakura growled, his hand fal awa away from the now non-existent wound. "You knew Malik would
reappear?!" Ishizu nodded.
"You have to stay in here, little one. No matter what happens . . . until Bakura or Marik come to get you, you must stay here," Yami murmured, standing by
the still closed doorway of Yugi's Soul Room and gazing at his aibou solemnly, his eyes dark with concern.
"Yami . . . please, tell me what's going on out there!" Yugi said, struggling absently against the ropes that were binding him in the middle of his Soul Room.
Yami had caught him completely by surprise . . . and now his other was going to go back out into that demented madness and face his dark self alone?
Yugi wouldn't allow it . . . but he didn't have much of a choice at the moment.
"Marik . . . or rather Malik . . . has my other distracted. Now is the best time for me to attempt to regain control. I am sorry for tying you up, aibou . . . but
there is no other way to assure myself of the facat yat you will remain safe."
"Yami . . . you can't do this alone! You have to let me help!" Yugi whimpered, struggling futilely against his bonds. It was no use . . . Yami had them tight
enough to hold him without any blood loss. "What if something happens and you can't come back?!"
"There's a timerthe the ropes, young one . . . and if anything happens to me, they will disappeastanstantly. Either way . . . at least I know you will be safe."
He turned to the door then, aware of the amethyst eyes that were watching his every move. He paused, one hand resting on the door handle, his head
bowed. "I'm sorry, little one. Forgive me this last sin . . . and go on with your life."
"YAMI!" Yugi screamed . . . but his other was gone. And somehow, Yugi knew he wasn't planning on coming back.
*-------*-------*-------*-------*
Malik twitched, his muscles still aching from the beating and the orgasm as he lay limp beneath the dark Yami above him. The sti still wasn't over . . .
neither of them had screamed as of yet, so round two was pretty much inevitable at this point. Both the Puzzle and the Rod lay a short distance away,
thrown to one side in their passion.
"You will scream for me, Malik," Yami murmured, blood red eyes glowing as they stared down at the Egyptian, lust still burning behind them.
"Not if I make you scream first," Malik replied . . . and lunged for the Rod, unsheathing the dagger and burying it in the dark other's stomach. The spirit
reared back, pulling the Rod from his body with the movement, harsh whimpers of pain echoing from the throat before a throaty chuckle escaped the blood
tinted lips.
"Now that . . ." the other gasped, "was breaking the rules." Malik smiled coldly, standing stiffly, ignoring the pain flaring through his spine from where Yami
had roughly used him.
"You never mentioned rules about how I could make you scream . . . only that I had to do so," he murmured, standing over the other. "You've lost a lot of
blood from round one, Yami, and now you are losing more. You cannot win this game . . . admit defeat, and I may lou lou live." The dark Yami smirked,
standing on wobbly legs, ignoring the blood that dripped steadily from the wound in his stomach and down his thighs in tiny rivulets.
"I can still win this game,ik,"ik," he whispered. Malik screamed as suddenly he was hauled into the air and slammedo a o a stone tablet that appeared at his
back. "See? I win . . . and now you're mine for all eternity." The other looked around slowly, noticing quickly the absence of his other two play toys. "That
damned Tomb Robber," he growled, his teeth clenching. "No matter . . . I will reacquire them soon enough. Now . . . you will tell me how to complete my
union with my weaker , To, Tomb Guardian." The knife reappeared in his hand, drawing thin lines of blood over Malik's abdomen. Malik clenched his teeth,
unwilling to give the other the satisfaction that causing pain gave him. Yami snarled, the dagger stilling, it's point digging in to flesh as he became angry with
the Egyptian's defiance.
"You will tell me . . ." he snarled . . . and spun when an unexpected voice answered.
"He can't if yill ill him, darkness of my soul," the Pharaoh murmured. He was standing a few feet away . . . and in his hands, he held the once again
complete Millennium Puzzle. "You want this . . . do you not?" Yami said, holding the Puzzle out to his dark self. "Then come take it . . . this time we are on
even ground, and you will not win so easily." The Puzzle flashed suddenly . . . and Marik slumped to the ground, once again in control of himself and
achill oll over.
"Yami . . ." he murmured . . . and was surprised when the Pharaoh actually smiled at him.
"Your dark did me a great service, Marik Ishtar, even if it was with his own plans for domination in mind. I owe him . . . and you . . . a debt I can never
repay. I have but one charge to lay upon you now. Your family is free of my tomb . . . there is no need to guard it any longer. Instead, I will you to guard
Yugi . . . he will need your strength in the days to come, and I will not be at his side."
"Cause you will be dead!" the dark Yami snarled, and lunged for the Puzzle. The Pharaoh quickly placed the item around his neck, dancing out of the way
of his enraged other self. The other growled, spinning on one heel to attack again . . . and each time, Yami was no longer where he had been.
P>
"You've weakened considerably," Yami murmured, crimson eyes solemn as he stared into his other's blood red orbs. "Yugi did more damage to you than
I had hoped. You will por aor all you have done . . . as will I."
"I will pay for NOTHING!" the other snarled, and tackled Yami around the waist, sending them both crashing to the ground. They rolled, a blur of fists and
feet as the two fought to regain control of the other.
T SIT SIZE="+1">"You enjoyed what I did!" the shadow Yami growled as he regained the upper hand for a moment. "You wanted to taste of thier blood and flesh as much
as I did . . . you wanted to see them suffer! How can you punish me for fulfilling your darkest wishes!" He was suddenly flying through the air, landing with
a grunt as Yami stood shakily, wiping away blood from a cut above his eye, a bruise already forming along his jaw.
"Yes . . . I enjoyed it in the darkest recess's of my soul, damn you!" the Pharaoh hissed, crimson eyes cold. "And I will pay for that for the rest of my
eternity in darkness . . . condemned to live every action over and over in the dark isolation of the Puzzle. But you will not be there . . . not this time, and
never again. I will suffer for my sins . . . you will die for them."
"You can't kill me . . . I am a part of you, and I always will be." Yami sighed, crimson eyes closing for a moment. A moment was all it took for his dark
self to get behind him, pinning his arms as he hissed in his ear. "You cannot stop this."
"No," Yami murmured. "I cannot stop us from becoming one . . . but I can control the method. You will hurt my friends no more . . . and you will never
lay hand on Yugi again." He spun, and brought his lips down on to his other's in a brutal kiss. "We are one and the same . . . return to me, my darkness,"
he whispered, his lips hungrily devouring his other's as he succumbed to his own dark's wishes.
"Yami! DON'T" Marik shouted, rising unsteadily to his feet as the shadow in the Pharaoh's arms began to fade, becoming insubstantial before merging
with the shaking form that held it. Marik held his breath, hardly daring to hope . . . and stepped back as the whirlwind that had arisen suddenly died.
"Marik . . ." Yami whispered. "Remember my charge." The Shadow Realm was suddenly gone, leaving Marik fully clothed in the middle of the sunlit street
with Yami.
"YAMI! MARIK!" Tristan shouted, running towards them from the car, Bakura ,Duke, and Kaiba close at his heels. They slid to a halt as Yami raised his
head, eyes flickering between crimand and blood.
"Stay away," he hissed, staggering backwards. "I'm not . . . in control as of yet. Tell Yugi I'm sorry . . . and that I love him. Forgive me . . ." He spun,
launching himself towards the pier nearby, where the ocean slapped sharply against the jagged rocks. Marik followed, forcing his body into motion, already
knowing what was going to happen and desperate to stop it.
"Yami! Don't do this!" he shouted as the Pharaoh stopped at the edge of the precipice. "This won't solve anything . . ." He nearly started out of his skin
when Yami chuckled, his slight form shaking like a leaf in a strong wind.
"Won't it?" he asked, his voice hoarse. "My own aibou is deathly afraid of me . . . Ra knows how Joey and Tea will regard me now . . . I do not belong
here. I never have. And now, I havereasreason to remain . . . no reason to live. All that I have built lies in ruins . . . only Yugi remains, and even my light has
been darkened and tainted. No, Marik . . . this is the only way." He raised the Puzzle above his head, pulling it off his neck sharply, the chain drawing blood
as the links bit into skin. "This is the only way . . . to stop this from happening again. Forgive me, my little light," he whispered. "I love you." Bringing his
hands down sharply, he cracked the Puzzle against the metal guard rail . . . and watched in satisfaction as it shattered, it's pieces falling into the ocean water
far below.
"Goodbye," he whispered . . . and then he was gone, Yugi's body drng tng to the pavement like an empty sack of flour as the force controlling it
disappeared.
"Yami . . ." Marik whispered . . . and fell to his knees, weeping.
