In the ensuing silence that followed the dastardly timing of the mischievous God of Love, Laurel came to understand the extreme awkwardness that a creature captured in a jar experienced. Seven pairs of male eyes trained on her the instant the cursed Cupid (she would call him that just out of spite) vanished, and only one of them appeared friendly, which belonged to Carrot who was seldom upset by anything.
Larva looked troubled.
Shigure looked curious.
Subaru looked sad, but then didn’t he always so perhaps she should have said he looked like his normal self.
Aya, Nakago and Seto looked angry to say the least. Furious, hostile and near violence might have been a better description, but angry seemed so much more harmless sounding in Laurel’s mind so she opted to believe that instead.
The lack of noise was somehow deafening, she had the strangest roaring in her ears but knew it had to be in her head since no one was talking.
“So, uh, what do we do now,” Carrot finally asked, breaking the strained quiet and drawing everyone’s attention to him.
“I think I need to sit down,” Laurel mumbled, making a beeline for the nearest couch.
“No, what you need to do is choose one of us to be your Prince Charming so we can get the hell out of here,” Aya snapped, his voice hot with anger, outraged by the fact he had been brought here against his will to play stallion.
Aya’s sharp tone earned him an angry glare from Larva, though the Shinma’s expression was hidden behind his mask his hostility was evident in the way he menacingly faced the swordsman. “There is no need to be short with her. She did not wish for this to happen.”
“You can say that again,” Laurel faintly agreed as she plopped down onto one of the plush blue velvet cushions.
“Nevertheless, it did,” Seto barked, “And all because you had to be too high and mighty to accept the men this Eros threw at you.”
Laurel’s eyes narrowed as she began to feel the bitter taste of her own anger swell within her. The men weren’t the only ones that had been taken against their will after all. True, they had been brought here to…pursue her, but Laurel herself had been brought here as punishment for defying the choices of a God. So now she had to choose a man or else. The idea was galling and embarrassing and her normally even temper was nowhere near its usual calm state. “Listen I refuse to just settle for anyone, when I fall in love I plan on giving it my all, and I can’t do that if it’s with a guy I accept because I can’t take the time to find anything better. Would you settle for second best when it comes to picking the love of your life?”
“I hadn’t planned on having one anytime soon,” Seto shot back.
He deliberately avoided her question, loathe to agree with her. Everyone noticed this, Laurel included, but she had made her point to him and could afford to be a gracious winner at the moment. She had other things to think about. Like how she was going to get out of this mess. It was somewhat ironic that she was stuck with seven rather attractive if odd anime men, and all she wanted to do was leave. How often did she imagine situations similar to this one? What a disappointment she was turning out to be!
“I just need a minute to think,” she muttered, trying to block out the stares being directed at her.
“As the lady wishes,” a cheerful voice replied, startling Laurel into looking up just as a loud “poof” rang out and her vision became obscured by white fog.
Laurel felt the couch beneath her vanish and stiffened when she realized she wasn’t sitting on anything. She was floating in the air. About ten feet away from her hovered a breathtaking young boy, perhaps twelve, with bright hair and radiant eyes. He was smiling at her expectantly, and she found herself inappropriately thinking, If only he were a little older, even eighteen would be fine…
His smile widened and took on a decidedly heated quality, almost as if he could hear her, and then suddenly it occurred to her that he might actually be able to since Eros had. She immediately wiped the naughty thought from her mind and said, “Who are you?”
“You may call me Zeth,” the boy replied, still smiling at her in a slightly suggestive manner, and she had the sinking feeling he could indeed read minds.
“Where are we,” she asked, gesturing at the fog surrounding them.
“We are wherever you wish to be,” he replied, taking a step nearer to her, and from closer range she realized he was more along the age of sixteen. His tone had a caressing quality to it, and she blinked at him as she wondered if he were actually making a pass at her.
“Home,” she inquired, though she had a pretty good idea what his answer would be.
The boy laughed and his voice was deeper then she’d realized, hinting perhaps he was eighteen after all and just blessed with a very youthful appearance. “No, sorry. That is the one place I cannot take you.”
He placed a slight emphasis on the word “take”, lending it a lascivious quality. And now he almost seemed to look like a young man rather then a boy, his muscles more defined, his body sleek and tempting her to touch it…Laurel’s hand had started to actually reach out for his smooth form when she saw him shift slightly to bring himself within touching range and the movement broke the trance she was in.
She raised her eyes to glare at him, but he seemed totally unrepentant, mesmerizing smile still in place as he seemed to tower over her. She really hated being short.
“There’s nowhere else I want to go,” she informed him, irritated with her attraction to him and his encouragement of it. He was far too young for her…wasn’t he? Now he looked closer to her in age, but she could have sworn a minute ago he was just a boy!
“I suppose I can compromise,” Zeth heaved out on a sigh.
Before she could ask him what he meant, the fog dissipated and she found herself sitting on her own couch in her own home. She felt a rush of sheer joy, but that ended when Zeth quietly informed her, “We are not in your home, only a place I have created from images in your mind.”
That earned him another glare. “Stay out of my head.”
“Fine, I’m more interested in other places anyway,” he sweetly murmured.
Laurel couldn’t help the rush of heat that swept through her at his words. He was definitely attractive, and such a blatant come on was impossible to ignore. She decided to evade his obviously sexual innuendo. “What are you doing here? Why did you bring me here, er, into the fog?”
“Because you wished it,” he patiently responded, eyeing her in a way that made her want to squirm. She was certain he was picturing her naked or something.
“What are you, my own personal genie,” she joked.
He licked his finely chiseled lips and approached the couch until he was invading her personal space. “I am whatever you want me to be.”
“Um, how about you being that about five feet away from me,” Laurel stuttered, unnerved by his proximity and completely befuddled by the gorgeous creature’s intense interest in her.
Zeth frowned but obligingly stepped away from her until he was five feet away, as she had asked. “Happy?”
He sounded distinctly petulant, and she smiled despite the day she’d been having thus far. “Actually, yes.”
He gaped at her for a moment and then chuckled. “Good.”
“Now answer my question. Why did you really bring me here?”
“Because you wished to be away,” he answered, “And it is my duty to carry out your wishes so long as they do not interfere with the commands of Eros.”
Laurel immediately frowned in dismay. “You work for Eros?”
He read her displeased expression and slowly nodded. “Yes I do.”
She remained silent for a moment, considering his earlier words. “Do you have to do whatever I tell you to?”
That naughty smile was back on his enchanting face. “Whatever you want, as long as it doesn’t contradict Eros’ orders.”
“Why did he give you to me?”
Zeth shrugged. “I think he may have been feeling slightly remorseful for the situation he has placed you in. But, he is an Immortal and will never admit he is wrong.”
“So you are my consolation prize,” she concluded.
“That’s right.”
There was that heated look again. It made her very uncomfortable, only because she was positive he was too young for her no matter how old he seemed. “Will you please stop leering at me,” she finally burst out.
The expression instantly vanished to be replaced with a contrite one. “I am sorry, you are just very pleasing to look at, and I do belong to you.”
He really didn’t need to sound so thrilled about it, she thought. This was already uncomfortable enough since she found him exceptionally attractive and now knew he found her attractive as well. “What about the others?”
“Oh, I’m sure they’re scrambling around trying to find you,” Zeth airily replied.
Laurel thought it might serve them right after some of them had been so rude to her, but she had to concede they had every right to be upset. They were stuck in Conquest because of her. “Go back and tell them where I am. And stay away until I call for you, I want some time alone to think.”
“You can’t think with me here,” he asked, eyeballing her like she was something he’d love to devour.
“No.”
Zeth grumbled to himself but then sighed, “As the lady wishes,” and disappeared into another “poof” of fog.
Once he was gone, Laurel immediately felt some of the stress in her dissipate. It was nice to have a moment to herself in familiar surroundings, even if she wasn’t really home. She had no idea what to do. There was no way she could pick one of those men to love. Oh, sure, they had great qualities despite their odd personalities. But they weren’t real. Or were they? Would Eros turn them into flesh and blood men once she picked her mate? Or turn her into a cartoon? Come to think of it, she was basically neither human nor cartoon at the moment. Here in the dimension of Conquest, she felt like an odd blending of both: solid like a human but with the exaggerated lines of an anime character. What the hell…?
Not wanting to study this aspect too closely since it was beyond her control she once more focused on what she could directly affect.
She stated the facts to herself one at a time: she was trapped in an alternate dimension with seven fictional men, and being forced to pick a lover from among them by a God. She had to be mental, but she definitely knew she wasn’t dreaming. Not after the pain she’d felt from Aya’s sword. The only way out was to choose a mate. But she didn’t want one! Well, she did, but not from a group of men hand picked by someone else.
“Technically, they were picked by you,” a sensual voice replied, surprising her into emitting a shriek.
Eros was leaning against the back of the couch, and his breath had tickled her ear, he was so close. Laurel jumped to her feet and moved away from him, putting some distance between her and the living Adonis. “Don’t do that,” she fumed.
He ignored her. “You are quite right. As I have said before, you can’t leave until you pick a life mate from one of those men. And, “unique” as they might be, they were indeed your choices. They were all acceptable in your mind, that’s how I found them in the first place.”
“Great, is everyone going through my mind,” she irritably complained.
“No, just myself and Zeth.”
It had been a rhetorical statement, and she knew he was aware of that but had spoken to annoy her. She studied his shining countenance and without thinking blurted, “Are you related to Zeth?”
Eros blinked at her for a moment and then said, “Yes, why?”
“He reminds me of you,” she sighed, rubbing the back of her neck in irritation. “You won’t consider calling this whole thing off and sending us all home?”
“No, I am doing this for your benefit,” he firmly replied, though part of this was personal of course, since he had sworn to see her settled down if it was the last thing he did.
Laurel was going to point out to him he didn’t have a clue what she needed, but he glowered at her in warning and she realized he was reading her mind again. Glaring at him, she muttered, “I wish you’d stop doing that.”
“I can’t help it,” he honestly replied. “Mortals project their thoughts with blaring intensity. I have to concentrate just to block out your thoughts, and in this case I have no wish to do so since I can better understand you if I listen to what’s running through your mind.”
“Fine, so there’s nothing I can do about you peeking into my head and nothing I can do to convince you to let us go home,” Laurel snapped, starting to pace in agitation.
“That’s not quite true. You can go home once you pick a soul mate,” Eros pointed out to her.
“That could take ages,” Laurel wailed.
“If you are worried about time on Earth, you needn’t bother. For all intents and purposes, everyone you know no longer remembers you exist. Once you return to Earth, their memories will be restored and they will simply think you were gone for a matter of hours or days on vacation.”
He seemed to have all the answers she thought with no small amount of annoyance. Eros grinned at her, and her scowl deepened. I said stay out of my head!!! He winced at her mental shout and she felt a moment of satisfaction. “Fine, send me back to Conquest. It’s obvious the only way out of this mess is to do what you want.”
She believed that was only for the time being, but she was careful not to dwell on the thought so he wouldn’t pick up on it. Eros gave her an exaggerated wink and then waved his hand, and she found herself in the Great Room in Conquest once more. All seven anime men were pacing agitatedly but no one was speaking. When Laurel cleared her throat, Carrot jumped and emitted a yelp and it reminded her so much of herself that she smiled.
Larva materialized at her side. “Where have you been?”
“I was with Eros, trying to convince him to let us leave.”
“He refused,” the statement came from Aya, who sounded much less frigid now. Perhaps her time away had given them a chance to calm down?
“Of course,” she sighed.
“Damn it,” Seto seethed. “What now? Do we parade in front of you, do a little turn, and have you pick the man you find most attractive?”
“No,” Zeth replied, poofing into view.
Laurel had no idea what he’d told the men while she was gone, but they all turned to glare at him with open dislike, even Carrot, who normally liked everyone until they tried to kill him.
“Laurel has to fall in love with one of you, she can’t just base her decision on who she has the hots for, although I already know who that would be,” Zeth added with a grin.
Carrot and Shigure’s expressions instantly grew inquisitive, and Laurel’s eyes widened in surprise since she wasn’t conscious of having even made a choice in her mind yet who was the most attractive. Zeth winked at her and she realized it had to be that damned mind reading again. But it was Nakago who astonished everyone by murmuring, “Do tell.”
“This is no time to make light of the situation,” Subaru quietly admonished the blond warrior, ignoring the venomous look his reply engendered, his attention on Laurel now. “I think we are going to be here for quite some time. What will our loved ones do while we are away? Won’t we be missed?”
“Eros has seen to it we have been temporarily forgotten,” Laurel explained. “I guess when we return, so will their memories, and they will think we’ve only been away for a matter of days at most.”
“Powerful magic indeed,” Nakago remarked, his voice tinged with respect. “This Eros is a formidable if frustrating enemy.”
“Lovely, but all this chattering is getting us nowhere,” Seto growled.
“Well falling in love isn’t like running a business, you don’t just issue orders and get things started,” Shigure calmly replied. “Unfortunately, it takes time for love to develop and frankly I’m too tired to play Prince Charming today. You look rather tired yourself, Laurel. Might I suggest we all retire for the evening?”
“Great idea, I’ll just tuck Laurel in,” Carrot exclaimed in glee.
“No,” seven male voices snapped at him, Zeth as irritated as everyone else was.
“Fine, but I do want to check her room and see if she has a shower,” Carrot pouted.
“What are you talking about?” Laurel asked, puzzled.
“Carrot is referring to the fact that we all have toilets but no showers or bath tubs,” Aya explained.
“Actually, there is a shower and bath area, but it is not in Laurel’s rooms,” Zeth spoke up. “However, you do have to go through her main living room to get to it.”
“Why? What genius came up with that design,” Seto was still feeling surly, and everything was setting him off.
“Eros did, and the reason is simple: she’s the only woman, she can lock the main entry to her wing so none of you can walk in on her while she is bathing. And, if you have to walk through her rooms, she will know you are on your way to the baths so she won’t walk in on you, either.”
“She can walk in on me anytime,” Shigure generously replied, the gleam in his eyes anything but innocent.
“Ugh, I think I will go to bed after all,” Laurel muttered, feeling a headache coming on. “Larva, come with me?”
“Certainly,” he replied, ignoring Shigure’s “Huh, perhaps I should give the silent approach a try” and Carrot’s whistle.
