“He’s late.”
“By ten seconds.”
“He’s never late.”
“He’s always late. He
comes here straight from work.”
“You’re right.”
“Jay, between the two of us, I should be the one on the edge
of my seat, not you.”
Jason let out a sigh and sank back into his chair. “I just want this to work out for you. How can you be so calm about it?”
“I’m a psychiatrist, Jay.
I’ve come to learn that being worried isn’t going to help.”
“Yeah, well I am too and I know that too and I’m still
worried.”
“That’s just because you love me.”
Jason’s response went unheard when the door opened. Jason, a secret closet fan of romance novels,
was expecting something dramatic. A hand
stuffed with roses, or dark circles under Seto’s eyes that spoke of sleepless
nights. What arrived was just Seto,
dressed as usual in his suit, already loosening his tie, and looking slightly
frazzled from work.
Joey stood up. “Hey
Seto, we’ll be in room eight today. Jay,
you can go on home if you want to.”
“Like hell,” Jason said under his breath.
Seto smirked at him on the way past, and Jason glared.
Seto had become rather attached to room eight, and for a
brief moment he regretted that he would probably never be back in there.
“I did my homework.”
Joey nodded, closing the door. Seto took a seat on the bed, and crossed his
legs. He looked to his right instead of
at Joey. “Have you had any mood swings
since your last appointment?”
Seto shook his head negatively. Joey waited.
Eventually, the silence persuaded Seto to speak.
“Do you know the word desideratum?”
Joey shook his head.
“No, sorry.”
“The definition is to desire a need. It means to want something that you also
need, like food. But it’s
ambiguous. I like to think that it means
that you want something so badly you wish it was a need, you desire a
need. Because if you needed it, you
would always be justified in having it.”
Joey thought he knew where this was going, but he refused to
jump to conclusions. Finally, Seto
turned to look at him. “I don’t need
you. I know I need affection, but you’re
right, it doesn’t have to be from you.
So I don’t need you, just somebody.”
He paused. “But, I wish I needed
you. Because if I needed you, you would
be there, no questions asked. That’s
what you do. But I don’t need you. I just want you. Desideratum.”
Joey allowed Seto’s statement a moment of punctuated silence
before he began. “In a relationship, if
the two parties involved need each other, it’s often doomed to fail. Both are often paranoid, over protective, and
usually over bearing. They’ll grow to
hate each other for it. I’ve seen it
happen.” He kept Seto’s eyes, and leaned
against the chair he was standing beside.
“Now, if one partner needs the other, but that need isn’t returned, the
relationship is also doomed to fail.
There will never be a balance between the two. But, if neither partner needs the other,
there is a better chance. If both are
together simply because they choose to be, not because they need to be, they
can make it work. I don’t need you
either.”
Seto shifted, his legs still crossed. “But do you want me?”
Joey smiled, and crossed the room. Reaching out, he took Seto’s knees in his
hands and physically uncrossed them. “Yes,
I do.” He crawled onto the brunette’s
lap and kissed him soundly. Even when
they parted, he kept their foreheads pressed together.
“What’s this mean?” Seto asked.
“It means you found somebody outside of your therapy to give
you affection. It means you are no
longer Dr. Aurulent’s patient. And it
means tomorrow you better call Joey at his house and ask him to dinner.”
“Not now?”
“Not now, Dr. Aurulent is working now.”
“But isn’t this my last appointment?” Seto asked, looking
sly.
“Yes,” Joey said slowly, trying to figure out where Seto was
going.
“So, the moment I walk out of here, I’m no longer Dr.
Aurulent’s patient. And if, say, I were
to wait in the parking lot, and happened to meet Joey there, could I ask him to
dinner then?”
“I suppose you could do that,” Joey answered, kissing Seto
again. “As a doctor, I will miss you;
you’ve been a delight of a patient.”
“Hmm, I bet.”
Laughing, Joey climbed off of Seto.
“That’s it for today, you’re free to leave.”
Seto hesitated. “Just
because I’m dating Joey doesn’t mean Dr. Aurulent is going to stop working,
does it?”
Joey bit his lip. He
was hoping that little catch wouldn’t come up until at least the third
date. “No, it doesn’t. This is what I do, Seto, and I can’t give it
up.”
Seto shook his head.
“Don’t, it doesn’t matter. I
don’t care what Dr. Aurulent does, just as long as Joey is mine.” He crossed the room to the door. “It was nice to meet you, Dr. Aurulent.”
Joey laughed at him when the door shut, and waited just a
moment before following. Jason
practically jumped on him when he came out of the hallway.
“Joe, he just left, what happened? Do we need to catch him?”
“No, Jay, we don’t.”
“So, how’d it go?”
Joey smiled. “Seto is
no longer Dr. Aurulent’s patient.”
Jason’s face fell. “Would you
mind closing up for me? Joey wants to go
meet his boyfriend.”
Jason glared at Joey’s back.
“You know Joe, I think referring to yourself in the third person is up
there with talking to yourself in the insanity qualifications.”
Giving Jason a wink, Joey pulled the office door shut behind
him.
End.
