A Christmas to Remember
Chapter 9
@-->-->----
Kaiba shook his head, trying to wake himself up from what had to be a nightmare. This could not possibly be real. He had been knocked out, locked up in a box so small he could barely move and now his little brother was outside, giggling as if it was some big joke and telling him that he couldn't let him out because the tag said 'do not open until Christmas'.
There was no way this could be happening to him.
"Mokuba." He tried to keep his irritation and impatience out of his voice, but he doubted if he would fool the one person who knew him best of everyone in the world. "What is going on?"
"You're a Christmas present." Mokuba made it sound as if that explanation was perfectly reasonable.
"Of course I am." Kaiba considered for a minute and decided that it was quite possible that his mind had finally snapped.
Mokuba giggled. "I'm not kidding, big brother. You're in a large, heavy duty box, all wrapped up with a big red bow on the top and a tag that reads..."
"Yes, I know what the tag reads," Kaiba interrupted. He was now officially annoyed. "Mokuba, if you do not tell me what is going on within one minute, I will dock your allowance for all of next year!"
"But Seto, it wasn't my idea! Really! It was Tristan and Duke who knocked you out and put you in there. Honest!"
Mokuba was just a little too emphatic for Kaiba's liking. His suspicions grew. "You were the one who gave them the tranquilizer gun, though." The silence from outside the box confirmed his suspicion. "Mokuba! When I get out there all of your video games are going straight in my cupboard and you will not see them again until you are eighteen!" He could hear Mokuba speaking very softly, but Kaiba was too angry to try and make out the boy's words.
"Mokuba. Let me out of here. Right now!" It was a demand that he fully expected Mokuba to obey and they both knew it.
There was the sound like the crinkle of paper, then an odd ripping sound from around the edge of the roof of his prison. Kaiba was still trying to work out what was going on, when the lid of the box he was sitting in was suddenly removed. He scowled and shielded his eyes from the sudden glare, speaking before he saw his rescuer. "Mokuba you are in so much trouble! I do not know where to begin with your punish...."
Kaiba froze mid-word as his eyes finally adjusted to the light enough for him to see who had opened the box. "Wheeler? What are you doing here? Where is Mokuba?" Even as he said it, he knew it was a stupid question. He scowled at the blonde teen. "It is no use trying to protect him. What he did was thoughtless, irresponsible, dangerous..."
"For me." Joey interrupted Kaiba's rant. His voice was very soft and his cheeks were red with heat. "What he did... it was for me."
Kaiba stared at him. "What are you talking about, Wheeler?"
Joey sighed and ran a hand through his already mussed hair. "Let me help ya out of there, then I'll explain everythin'."
Kaiba was too confused to do anything other than nod in agreement.
Climbing out of the box proved to be easier said than done. Kaiba inwardly cursed as he caught his foot on the side and tripped. He braced himself for impact with the floor, but instead found himself caught in a pair of strong arms that held him close against a firm chest. It took him a second before he realised that Joey was not pushing him away. He eased back, looking down to avoid the other boy's eyes. "I guess the tranquiliser has not completely worn off yet. I do not seem to have full control over my body." It was a lie and he suspected that Joey knew it.
"Maybe you should lie down for a while. I'll help ya." Joey slipped his arm around Kaiba's back. "Where's the nearest couch?"
"No couch. My bed." He felt the other teen tense and bit his lip, wondering if he was going too far. But no matter what, he could not resist the urge to have Joey in his bedroom. Even if it was just this once. "I will be more inclined to listen to you without losing my temper if I am resting on my comfortable bed rather than an uncomfortable couch."
Joey smirked. "Kaiba... we both know that ya don't have an uncomfortable couch in the place. There's no way you'd put up with anythin' that wasn't exactly what ya wanted. Includin' couches."
Caught in his lie, Kaiba was pushed into defending himself. "That is not the point. I will still be more comfortable on my own bed. Now are you going to take me there or not?"
"Okay, fine, I'll take ya to bed." Both boys froze as soon as the words left Joey's mouth. "Uh... I mean... Your bed... I'll take ya there." Joey winced as it came out sounding like an invitation. "Uh..."
Kaiba sighed. "Stop while you are behind, Wheeler."
Joey smiled weakly at him. "Yeah, I think I'd better."
They made it into the bedroom without any further incident. As soon as they were inside, Kaiba eased away from Joey and headed for the door on the other side of the room. "Hey! Kaiba! The bed's this way!"
"I have... something urgent to attend to first."
"Oh, well then, here, I'll help ya." Joey moved to Kaiba's side, but froze at the amused look he received. "What's so funny?"
"Wheeler... I have not required any help with this for quite some time now." Kaiba waited patiently until Joey's eyes lit up with understanding, and his cheeks turned deep red with embarrassment.
"Oh. Um... I'll just... wait for you out here then."
"Good idea."
Kaiba emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later to find Joey pacing the room. He leaned against the doorframe and watched the blonde for a minute, wondering what it was that had the usually laid-back teen so nervous. When Joey didn't notice him after pacing the length of the room four times, the brunette moved.
"So, Wheeler, what happened to me last night, and why?" He sat down on the side of his bed and eyed the blonde, who had stopped pacing and was now staring at him.
Joey ran a hand through his hair and sighed. "It all started last week, on the ride back from the skatin'. Tristan started slippin' little comments in while we were singin'. I didn't realise what he was doin' at first and by the time I did... it was too late. He'd already worked out my secret."
Kaiba frowned, but before he could ask what secret, Joey continued talking.
"I begged him not tell and he said he wouldn't, but that he'd get me a Christmas present that would solve my problem. Last night, as I was leavin' the party, I noticed Tristan and Duke talkin' with Mokuba and they seemed to be pretty serious about somethin'. Then, this mornin', Tristan called me up. He said that he'd gotten me the perfect present and that, if I was serious about what I'd wanted, then I should get over to your place right away. The minute I saw the box, I knew they'd gone too far."
Joey bowed his head and then looked up again, into Kaiba's eyes. "I'm sorry, Kaiba. They shouldn't have involved Mokuba. This wasn't his fault. They asked him to help. It was for me."
Kaiba frowned, still very confused. "I do not follow. How was my being in a box supposed to help you with your... secret?"
Joey winced and ran his hand through his hair again. "Tristan asked me what I wanted for Christmas. It was right after the skatin' and the snowball fight and the... Anyway, I was distracted and the first thing I said... was you." He looked away. "Tristan took it the wrong way. I guess they figured that if you were stuck in a box and I got ya out, then maybe somethin' would happen between us. I don't think they were plannin' on your wakin' up so long before I got here, though. Tristan called me really early and told me to hurry, but my bike got a flat on the way."
"I see." Kaiba was beginning to understand. There were still two things he needed to know, but he wasn't sure he would like the answers. "What was Mokuba's role in this?"
"They needed his help to set it up. They needed him to sneak in the box and then get the tranquiliser gun. He didn't fire it though. That was Tristan. He was hiding in the closet. Mokuba told me when I talked to him earlier. He was really upset. He hadn't thought you'd be so angry with him just for trying to get us together." Joey bit his lip and hesitated.
Kaiba frowned. "Whatever you wish to say, just say it." He wasn't really angry anymore. Everything Joey was saying was good news, as far as he was concerned. But he was still cautious. He needed to hear one particular thing before he took any action.
"I was just wonderin'... is it really so wrong? I mean... me and you... gettin' together. I know we fight but... don't ya feel more alive somehow after we do? Like it's right for us to be like that? We don't fight all the time. The night we went skatin'... that was... nice." Joey trailed off, looking and sounding thoroughly miserable. He'd started off strongly, but lost steam fast. He stared at the ground and sighed.
"I guess what I'm sayin' is... I don't know how it happened and I don't know why and I'm sure this will be the last thing you want to hear from me, but... Aw man, I can't believe I'm gonna say this... I... I... I've fallen for ya, Kaiba. Hard." Joey's face was bright red and he refused to meet Kaiba's eyes.
The blunt words blurted out amidst all the hesitation and rambling was not the eloquent candlelit declaration on bended knee with music, wine and roses that Kaiba had dreamed about. Since he always awoke from that particular dream wet with sweat, his throat hoarse from screaming and his heart thumping with terror that Pegasus was really going to propose to him some day, nothing could have pleased Kaiba more. Except for the fact that Joey Wheeler had been the one to speak them to him.
But still, Kaiba hadn't heard the one thing he needed to hear to be sure of the blonde teen's intentions. "Let me see if I have this straight. You... care for me... and you wish the two of us to be... together. What... sort of a relationship do you see us having? Emotional or... purely physical?"
Joey looked up, his eyes searching Kaiba's as he frowned a little. "Both. I hope. Does this mean...? Kaiba, do you... Do you... like me?"
Kaiba still hadn't heard what he needed to hear, but he was suddenly sure that his chance was going to be lost if he waited any longer. "Do you remember when you fell on me in the snow? Something almost happened."
The blonde started walking slowly towards him. "Yeah. I remember. I nearly hurt Tristan for that one."
Joey reached Kaiba and eased himself down on the bed beside him, then leaned in close. When he was just a little way away, he tilted his head and then his lips were soft against Kaiba's, the kiss light and sweet with just a hint of carefully restrained passion.
Their eyes drifted closed, their hands moved, reaching for each other instinctively, as if this was not the first time they had kissed, but something that they had done many times before.
The kiss deepened, becoming more passionate as their mouths tentatively parted and their tongues began to explore.
The passion smouldered, then caught, fanned into a roaring blaze by hands that wandered over hips and sides, then over bellies, chests and backs.
Their gentle breaths became harsher pants and soft noises, then low moans.
The kiss turned from passionate to hungry and their hands moved in reaction, no longer gently stroking but rubbing and squeezing, rolling nipples between fingers and pushing cloth aside to bare the heated skin beneath.
Joey leaned forward, pressing against the other teen's body.
Kaiba lay back, his legs falling open.
Joey moved over him and settled between the spread limbs.
Their bodies moved together, rubbing against each other as they continued to kiss. Kaiba's hands stroked over Joey's back. Joey's hands stroked over Kaiba's hips. They moved in a strong and steady rhythm, their movements causing their breathing to quicken and their moans to come louder and more often.
Their kiss deepened.
Their moans filled the air.
Their bodies surged against each other.
Faster.
Stronger.
They arched into each other, then gasped, going still before their bodies trembled.
They held each other tightly, clinging as if they could physically hold themselves on that plane of existence as their pleasure peaked and they each found their release within heartbeats of each other.
Joey slumped on top of Kaiba and moaned softly as he nuzzled the other teen's neck. "Did we just...?"
"Yes." Kaiba stroked Joey's back and tried to catch his breath. "We did."
"While still wearin' our...?" Joey moved his kisses to the spot where Kaiba's shoulder joined his neck.
"Yes." Kaiba tilted his head to give Joey better access. "We are definitely still wearing our clothes."
"That's kind of..." Joey paused to lick Kaiba's neck.
"Arousing." Kaiba purred and stroked his hand up Joey's back to tangle in his hair.
"Actually, I was thinkin' more... sticky." He lifted his head up enough to smile into Kaiba's eyes. "But arousin' works too."
Kaiba smiled. "Are you suggesting that we need a bath now?" His hands stroked over Joey's back.
Joey's smile became a grin. "Sounds good to me. Of course, we won't be able to put our clothes back on again... It's all right for you, but I don't have anything to change into."
Kaiba hesitated for just a moment, wondering if he dared say what he wanted to. "Something we should remedy at the earliest opportunity. Your not having any of your clothes here," he elaborated. "Although, your not wearing anything is quite all right with me, also."
Joey laughed and then went quiet, biting his lip as he looked at Kaiba. "Are you... I mean... This has all happened so fast. But... you seem okay with it. Is this... Am I... dreaming?"
If it hadn't been for the worry in Joey's eyes, Kaiba would have laughed. "If you are, then I am as well. This is not sudden for me, Joey. I have felt this way about you for some time." When his words were met with a silent stare, he thought he had said too much. "What is it?"
"Say that again. Please."
"I have felt this way..."
"No, not that bit! My name. You said... my name. Not 'Wheeler'." Joey looked stunned.
Kaiba smiled. "Joey." He laughed as the blonde suddenly buried his head against his neck, hugging him tightly. "If I had known that would have such an effect on you, I would have said it sooner."
As Joey poked his tongue out at him, Kaiba began to feel a little uncomfortable. "You were right earlier. 'Sticky' is definitely the more appropriate word. Shall we have that shower now?"
"Definitely!"
As they walked hand in hand towards the bathroom, Joey grinned at Kaiba. "So... I guess this means we're together now, huh?"
Kaiba arched an eyebrow and smirked. "We released together during our fist kiss. How can you still have doubts?"
Joey shrugged. "Well... you haven't said anythin' about whether it's for keeps or not." He looked away. "I fell for ya ages ago, but I'm not sure if you feel the same way or not."
Stopping, Kaiba gently turned Joey around to face him. "I have wanted us to be together for a long time. I just did not know how to tell you. I love you, Joey."
Joey smiled so brilliantly it lit up his whole face. "I love you too, Seto."
Kaiba smiled back at him. "You said it. You finally said what I have been waiting to hear."
Joey blushed. "Sorry. I was kind of embarrassed to say it before. I thought you'd know what I meant when I said I'd fallen for you."
Kaiba took his hand and headed for the bathroom again. "No, not that. My name. You finally said my name."
Joey grinned and moved, catching Kaiba in a tight hug. "Seto. Seto Seto Seto Seto!" He kissed him soundly.
Kaiba pulled back from the kiss and smiled ruefully at Joey. "As much as I would love to keep kissing you, Joey, I do not know if that sort of stain comes out of carpet. After last time, I doubt if we would make it back to the bed."
Joey laughed. "How about the shower then?" He hugged Kaiba and smiled at him. "Although... Ya know what I've always wanted to do?"
"Knowing your creativity, I am almost afraid to ask. What?" Kaiba hugged his soon-to-be lover back.
"I've always wanted to make out under a Christmas tree."
Kaiba looked at Joey for a moment, then grabbed his hand and headed for the door. He opened it and bellowed, "Mokuba! Give the staff the rest of the day off and have the chauffeur drive you to Yugi's!"
Joey stared at Kaiba and tried to keep up with him. "Um... is that really necessary just so we can make out under a tree?"
"Yes." Although he had been Joey's Christmas present, as he dragged his new boyfriend down the hall towards the ballroom Kaiba felt as if he had been the one given the gift. The gift of love. For him, this would definitely be a Christmas to remember.
After all, there were sixteen Christmas trees in the ballroom and foyer alone.
