Chapter 8

Jou settled himself comfortably on the couch in Kaiba's home office and leaned back, closing his eyes. "Man... I gotta admit, Kaiba, you've got a good cook. That was the best dinner I've ever eaten."
"Chef." Kaiba's response was distracted as he intently studied the computer screen in front of him, occasionally tapping a key or clicking a mouse button.
"Huh?" Jou opened his eyes again and sent Kaiba a confused look.
"Pierre is a Master Chef, not a mere cook." Kaiba's brow creased into a frown as he continued to work.
"Oh. Sorry. He's a good chef, then." Jou shrugged and closed his eyes again.
Kaiba glanced over at him and sighed, shaking his head. "Don't get too comfortable. If you fall asleep there, I'll only have to wake you up again. There's a little matter that you and I need to discuss."
That caught Jou's attention. He sat up and looked over at the brunette, eyeing him warily. "Oh? Like what?"
Kaiba held up a hand, eyes locked on the screen. "I'll explain in a moment. I need to confirm that it's gone through."
Jou frowned. Before he could ask what Kaiba was talking about though, the brunette made a pleased sound and looked up from his work. His sapphire gaze seemed warmer than usual as he almost smiled at the blonde boy. "Done."
"Er... Congratulations... I guess."
Kaiba smirked at the bemused look Jou was giving him. "Do you remember the agreement we made last Saturday night?"
Jou gave him an odd look at the change of subject but nodded slowly. "Sure. We traded information and ya didn't turn me over to the cops. What about it?" He watched silently as Kaiba stood up and moved around his desk, then leaned against it, crossing his arms.
"Amongst everything I said to you that night were two statements. I said that it made no difference to me whether or not you were caught. I also said that I would let you return to your life of crime." Kaiba kept his gaze on Jou's face as he spoke, his tone and expression serious and intent.
Jou frowned. "I remember."
"As it turns out, those statements... were incorrect." As Jou's deep brown eyes widened and he started to stand, Kaiba gave him an impatient frown and motioned for him to stay where he was. "At least hear me out before you start panicking."
Jou glared at him. "I ain't 'panicking'. But you'd better have a good explanation for what ya just said!"
Kaiba nodded. "I do, however I have a little story to tell you first."
He took Jou's silent scowl for an agreement to listen to him.

"After our discussion on Saturday night, I spent Sunday morning tracking down the man who had dared to intrude on the privacy of my home. Sunday afternoon, I had one of my security guards tail him. He followed him to several bars and then back to his home. It was pure chance that Minoto happened to go out on one of his 'jobs' that night. My guard notified me and I in turn notified the police."
Jou frowned. "Whoa... Wait a minute, Kaiba! That wasn't what ya said to that other guy. Ya said you'd spoken to him and bought him some drinks."
Kaiba smirked. "I was bluffing. I knew from my research, and my guard's report on the tailing, that he liked to drink. I merely used that to my advantage."
A light appeared in Jou's eyes as he grinned. "I get it. Ya wanted that bounty hunter guy to think that ya knew more about the situation than ya did."
"Yes." Kaiba shifted as though suddenly uncomfortable. "But my plan backfired. It seems that Minoto knows something about Saiyukiro. Whatever it is, it's obviously important enough that Saiyukiro was willing to kill me, purely on the chance that I might have learned about it."
Jou nodded, scowling. "That guy was a real piece of work. I hope he gets what he deserves."
A predatory smile, much like that of his beloved Blue Eyes White Dragon, curved Kaiba's lips. "Oh, don't worry, he will. He tried to shoot *me*, after all. My lawyers are already on it. They'll certainly earn what I pay them, this month. This is the second deal they've worked on in as many days."
"The second?" Jou frowned for a second and then remembered. "Oh yeah! That Minoto guy stole your vase. I guess ya want it back, huh?"
Kaiba released a soft chuckle. "Not particularly. I never really liked that vase. No, the deal they made was something a little different." His smile faded and he levelled a serious gaze at Jou. "It has to do with The Cat, and the bounty on his head."
Jou stared at Kaiba, his brown eyes clouded with confusion. "Me? What about me?"
"When the police captured Minoto last night, they found a certain set of cards in his possession. White business cards marked with a cat's pawprint in red." At Jou's gasp, the brunette smirked and nodded. "The police immediately believed that they had managed to catch The Cat."
Jou shook his head. "Man, are they gonna be disappointed."
"No, they won't be."
There was an odd note in Kaiba's voice. Jou's gaze narrowed as he studied him. "Okay Kaiba, spill. What's goin' on?"
Kaiba took a deep breath. "Minoto has confessed to being The Cat."
"He *what*?" Jou gaped at Kaiba. "No way! That's... That's..."
"Possibly the luckiest break you are ever likely to have." Kaiba glared at the blonde boy, his voice cool. "So, I suggest that you do not go and waste it!"
Jou responded in his usual elegant and witty way. "Huh?"
Kaiba let out a long-suffering sigh. "Listen closely. I will explain it to you in small words, so you understand." He ignored Jou's glare.
"When the police found the cards on him, Minoto found himself with an opportunity to... advance his status among the criminal class. No one would give him any respect as the common thief that he was, even though he was good enough to get past *my* estate's security system. However... as The Cat, people will sit up and take notice of him. It also works in his favour in another way though."
"How?"
"If Minoto is believed to be The Cat, then the only crimes he'll be charged with are those that The Cat was responsible for. Namely, the ones where that rather distinctive calling card was left. Also, everyone knows that The Cat only stole one item in each robbery. When you consider how many robberies Minoto is most likely responsible for, and how much he would have stolen each time..."
Jou's fists clenched in anger. "That bastard! Not only is he takin' credit for my hard work, but he's gonna get away with all his other crimes too!"
Kaiba arched an eyebrow. "Oh please. Spare me the hypocritical indignation. After all, with his confession, you will be getting away with your crimes also." He held up a hand as Jou glared at him and started to speak. "Save your breath. I already know all about your sister's need for the money. That does not alter the fact that you stole to get it."
The moment he said it, Kaiba knew he had gone too far. He tensed as Jou slowly stood up and began to walk slowly towards him. The blonde boy stopped only a few feet away. His eyes locked with Kaiba's as he spoke, his voice soft.
"Yeah, I stole to get it. No, I'm not proud of that and no, I don't think it makes it right just because I stole it for a good reason. But before ya lecture me about it... Did ya ever think maybe ya don't have all the facts?"
As Kaiba looked into Jou's fathomless brown eyes, he saw the pain in their depths. "So tell me, then. What facts am I missing?"
"I never stole a thing." As Kaiba stared at him in shock, Jou sighed. "You're right, Kaiba. I'm a klutz. I'm also a fake." He sighed again and looked away.
"When I got the call from Shizuka... I was desperate. But I never once thought of stealin'. I looked around for odd jobs. I was willin' to do anythin'. I even got Yug to help me do up some flyers and put 'em around town. Then I got this really odd call. This lady wanted to know if I'd be willin' to help her get rid of somethin' she didn't want anymore. I thought she just wanted me to take it somewhere. But... it turned out the thing she wanted to get rid of was an ugly old necklace. It had been in her husband's family for years and he kept insistin' she wear it. Honestly Kaiba... We're talkin' *ugly* here." Jou grimaced and shuddered at the memory.
Kaiba frowned. "Why didn't she merely sell it?"
"Her husband wouldn't hear of it." Jou shrugged. "So she got this idea. She told me a time and a date and she met me at the back door to her estate with the necklace. All I had to do was go there, 'steal' the necklace and it was my payment. I said no at first, I mean, it sounded crazy! But she begged me and I ended up agreeing. It was easy. I ended up with a nice sum of money for a night's work and she ended up without the necklace, but with the insurance money so she could get herself somethin' she actually liked. I didn't think anymore about it until a couple of days later, when she called to ask if I'd be willin' to do it again, for some friends of hers."
"Are you telling me... All of your thefts were..." Kaiba couldn't complete his question, he was too stunned.
Jou sighed and nodded. "Set-ups. Yeah."
Kaiba couldn't speak. He just stood there, staring at Jou and blinking every now and then for several minutes. Finally though, he shook his head and managed to say something. "What about the rumour going around. The one about you being seen. What happened?"
Jou scowled and looked away, colour rising into his cheeks. "A couple of weeks ago, somethin' happened. One of the ladies I was supposed to be meetin' was runnin' late so she took me inside with her to get the..." He frowned. "Forget what it was called, but it was uglier than Pegasus in his pyjamas and believe me, that's ugly." He shuddered. "She took me up to her bedroom and went in to her dressing room to get the thingy. She'd just come out again when... her maid came into the room."
He smirked. "I gotta give her credit, she came up with somethin' in a flash. It worked too. Got me out of there in one piece. But... There was a price. The maid talked to the papers and the next thing I know... Everyone thinks I'm some sort of hero in a romance novel, or somethin'." Jou sighed and shook his head.
Kaiba's lips twitched at the thought. "What about... the Kazaku Estate?"
Jou sighed, colour rising into his cheeks as he looked away. "That was downright embarrassin'. I only agreed to do it because it would have earned me the rest of the money I need to cover Shizuka's operation. I was hired by Mrs Kazaku to break in durin' the party. I was supposed to wait outside a certain window and then climb inside when Sakari Kazaku, ya know her, she goes to our school, came into the room. Then I was supposed to... Man, I'm embarrassed just sayin' it..."
The blonde boy fidgeted for a second before sighing and looking back at Kaiba, smiling wryly. "I was supposed to kiss her. I was a surprise for her birthday. Can ya believe it?"
Kaiba's lips twitched again, a little more strongly. "I'm... sorry I ruined things by catching you."
Jou chuckled. "Ya scared the pants off me, but ya didn't ruin it. I spoke to Mrs Kazaku the next day. Turned out, Sakari spent the whole night dancin' with her boyfriend. The one her parents hadn't had a clue existed until that day." He rolled his eyes and smirked, but then his smile faded and he sighed. "She offered to pay me, but I turned her down. I didn't feel right about takin' the money for somethin' I hadn't done."
Throughout the conversation, Kaiba had relaxed and his sapphire eyes had warmed. He looked at Jou almost kindly and nodded. "I apologise."
Jou stared at him as if he was about to faint. "Okay... who are ya and where's the real Kaiba?" he joked with a weak smile.
Kaiba had the grace to look uncomfortable. "You were right. I should not have judged you before I knew all of the facts."
"Yeah... well... Now ya know." Jou's blush deepened, then he frowned. "Ya also know why this deception thing won't work. Those ladies all know I'm The Cat. If they hear The Cat has been caught... They'll be worried. Mostly about their secrets but a couple might be worried about me too."
His usual poise recovered, Kaiba smirked. "I suggest you contact each of them and tell them that someone pretended to be you, not knowing the true situation, and was caught during their first robbery. I also suggest telling them that you've officially retired."
Jou managed a small smile and nodded. "Yeah. I'll do that. As for retirin'..." He sighed and bowed his head. "I guess there's no choice."
"Not if you don't wish to return the bounty money, no." Kaiba mentally counted down the seconds for Jou to realise what he'd just said.
"Huh?" The blonde boy stared at the brunette in confusion. "Wanna run that one by me again?"
Kaiba smirked. "There was a bounty on The Cat. I called the police in to capture Minoto. The police believe Minoto is The Cat. They paid the bounty to me."
Jou frowned. "So ya got some money out of the deal. Congratulations. What's that have to do with me?"
"Remember I mentioned before that my lawyers had been busy? I had them deal with the legalities involved in transferring the sum from the bounty... into the account you have set aside for your sister." Kaiba spoke very quietly, his words barely audible. Fortunately, Jou was only standing a few feet away so he heard them.
He gaped at Kaiba. "You... You're kiddin' me! Why? Why would ya do that?" He frowned and eyed Kaiba warily. "What do ya want in return?"
Kaiba looked deeply in Jou's eyes, allowing his mask to slip for a mere instant so the blonde could see his sincerity when he replied. "Nothing. I have no need of it and your sister does. If you can't accept it on those terms..." He hesitated and then steeled himself to admit what he had hoped he would not have to. "Then consider it a thank you... for saving my life today."
Jou shook his head immediately. "Kaiba... I..."
A flash of heat entered a pair of sapphire eyes and Kaiba glared at the blonde teen. "Not another word! The money is yours. Use it to save your sister's sight or throw it away, for all I care! Although, if you do that, you're more of an idiot than I ever thought you were!"
Heat entered Jou's eyes in return. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Kaiba sneered and moved a little closer, until he and Jou were standing face to face with barely a foot between them. He continued to glare. "It means that the bounty was substantial enough that it was more than most of the items you... sold."
For a minute, Kaiba had the smug satisfaction of seeing Jou completely speechless. Then he saw something he had never seen before.
Jou's whole face lit up into the broadest, happiest smile the brunette had ever seen on a human being before... clowns not included. The next thing Kaiba knew, he was being hugged, with one arm and great enthusiasm, by the blonde teen. "Kaiba! Ya know what that means? I only needed to get a bit more money so... there's enough now! Kaiba! Shizuka can have her operation! She'll be okay!" Jou moved back enough to grin at Kaiba.
Then he flung his uninjured arm around the brunette's neck, leaned in... and kissed him. Hard. On the lips. For several seconds.
Kaiba's mind went into meltdown. For the duration of the kiss, he simply couldn't do anything more than stand there and take in the fact that Jou's lips were pressed to his in the sweetest kiss he had ever known.
Then those lips were moving away. Kaiba's gaze locked on them. They were moving. Jou was speaking.
"Ah... Man... I'm sorry, Kaiba! I don't know what got into me! I... Kaiba? K...Kaib..."
The brunette teen's lips stilled the word before it could be completed.
Then there was nothing to be heard except for the soft moans of the two teenagers as they shared their first real kiss together.
