Chapter Nine
Katsuya
wakes up in a panic, feeling strong arms around him and not recognizing the
room he lies within. He hurls himself away from Seto and collapses to the
floor. His entire body trembles in fear.
Seto sits
bolt upright and stares at Katsuya. “Jou? Are you okay?”
“K-K-Kaiba?
Where the hell am I?” shouts Katsuya quivering.
“My
mansion,” says Seto, “Do you remember last night at all?”
Katsuya’s
eyes widen. “Did we…?”
“Your
father attacked you and tried to rape and kill you. At least, that’s what
Mokuba’s dream said would happen to you,” says Seto blushing slightly, “I got
to you before your father got to rape you…”
“And then
you brought me here and we shared a bed,” interrupts Katsuya, “Very innocent.
Yeah… Sorry… it’s just with everything that happened last night… I’m sorry. I
guess some things got forgotten out of fear.”
“It’s
okay,” says Seto before looking at the alarm clock beside his bed. “It’s five
o’clock. Do you want to sleep more or…?”
“I think
it’s safer to be awake,” says Katsuya standing. “I had a dream last night that…
that you never showed up when you did.”
Seto climbs
out of bed and walks towards Katsuya slowly. “He will never hurt you again,
Jou. You can stay here with me… for as long as you need to!”
Katsuya
moves quickly into Seto’s chest and begins crying again.
Seto wraps
his arms around Katsuya. “Let’s call a truce between us, Jou. When we are in
this house together, we will be friends. When we’re not, we can be whatever we
want to be towards each other.”
“So we
could still fight and bicker at school?” asks Katsuya pulling back away from
Seto and wiping his eyes.
“If you
wanted.”
“I like
fighting with you. You look cute when you’re pissed off!” exclaims Katsuya
smiling.
Seto’s eyes
widen. “I’m cute? How can I be cute? I’m supposed to be menacing! People are
supposed to die from looking at me! They aren’t supposed to think I’m cute!”
Katsuya
blushes and shrugs his shoulders.
“Anyway.”
Seto takes a deep breath and continues, “You’re welcome to use my personal bath
to get ready for school. I’ll head down to the kitchen and start a pot of
coffee.”
“Okay.”
Seto heads
towards the door.
“Hey,
Kaiba!”
Seto stops
and looks at Katsuya. “Yes, Jou?”
“Thanks
for… well… for everything. Letting me stay here. Coming last night. Just
everything,” says Katsuya.
“You’re
welcome,” says Seto.
Katsuya
turns towards the bathroom.
“Hey, Jou!”
Katsuya
looks over his shoulder at Seto. “Yes, Kaiba?”
“Are you
going to be okay?”
Katsuya
sighs. “I think so… It’s just…”
“What is
it?”
“Why?”
Katsuya turns towards Seto again and glares at the other boy.
“Why what?”
Seto glares at Katsuya.
“Why are
you helping me?” asks Katsuya, “First the glasses… both times might I add… then
last night, and then… letting me stay here. I don’t understand you sometimes. I
thought you hated me!”
“I tolerate
you,” says Seto, “That means I like you a little. Can’t I help you just for the
sake of helping you? Must there really be a reason why I do?”
“You’ve
always had a reason before.”
“And I’ve
never had a friend before! Not since…” Seto’s voice trails off into a whisper.
“Not since before Mokuba and I went to the orphanage. Kakashi… he’s my
psychiatrist. I talk with him when life gets too difficult for me… Too much
stress at work and Mokuba requiring too much of my attention… Kakashi keeps telling
me that you need to ‘be a friend to make a friend’. And I want a friend. I have
always wanted one. I just couldn’t make them because of who I had to become.”
Katsuya
stands watching Seto intently.
“This way…
I didn’t intend for it to be this way at all. But this way, we can be friends
when we are here together, and I can still act the way I have to when we’re not
at home.”
“Why must
you be so cold away from here?”
“Because if
I’m not, I can’t run Kaiba Corp.”
“I don’t
understand.”
“I’m still
young… too young to be the CEO of such a large company, but by acting cold and
ruthless, people think that I can handle everything that comes my way. And
sometimes they’re right,” says Seto, “I trick them basically.”
“You don’t
think the adults would take you seriously if you acted your age? You’re right.
I don’t think they would,” says Katsuya smiling at Seto.
Seto smiles
back. “Maybe you should go take a bath now.”
Katsuya
nods.
The two
boys turn and head through different doors.
* * *
Seto fixes
a bowl of cereal for Mokuba as soon as the black-haired boy makes his
appearance in the kitchen. He sets it in front of his brother. “We need to
talk.”
“What is
it, Seto?” asks Mokuba looking at his big brother apprehensively.
Seto sits
beside Mokuba and whispers, “I had a dream last night where Jou’s father killed
him, and I went to his house to find his father attacking him. I told Jou that you
had the dream. I brought him home with me last night. He’ll be staying with us
indefinitely.”
Mokuba
smiles. “Jou is staying here? Cool!”
“I thought
you would think so,” says Seto getting up. He grabs a bagel from the
refrigerator and splits it in half. He places the bagel into the toaster and
pours up a cup of coffee.
Katsuya
walks down to the kitchen wearing his school uniform. “Bathroom’s all yours,
Kaiba. You should get dressed. We’ve got to be at school soon.”
“We don’t
have to leave that early. The limo drives faster than you walk,” says Seto as
the bagel pops out of the toaster, “Would you like a bagel?”
“Um… no
thanks. I’ll just steal some of Mokuba’s cereal,” says Katsuya grabbing down a
bowl and fixing himself some.
Seto smears
peanut butter all over his bagel and begins to eat it.
“So, Jou…
what are you going to tell the others?” asks Mokuba.
“About?”
Katsuya blinks repeatedly at Mokuba.
“About why
you’re staying here.” Mokuba finishes his bowl of cereal and takes the empty
dish to the sink.
“Oh… I
hadn’t thought about it…”
“I’ll
handle it,” says Seto finishing the first half of his bagel.
“How?” asks
Katsuya quirking an eyebrow as if he doesn’t quite trust Seto’s idea.
“I’ll tell
them…” Seto smirks. “That you are working for me now, and I demand you stay in
my house for when I have need of your services. You are my new dream
interpreter after all. But I’ll imply that you are my new personal assistant.”
Katsuya
chuckles. “And I’ll tell Yugi the truth! The others, except maybe Bakura, will
buy into that lie easily enough!”
Seto nods.
Mokuba
smiles at the two older teens. “You two would make a cute couple!”
“What?”
exclaim Katsuya and Seto in harmony.
“You two
would make a cute couple!” exclaims Mokuba, “Maybe you should start dating!”
“And what
makes you think I’m gay?” asks Katsuya mock glaring at Mokuba.
“Well… Yugi
accidentally let it slip after I kissed him,” says Mokuba, “But I swore I
wouldn’t tell anyone who didn’t already know!”
“Yugi told
you?” asks Katsuya with wide eyes.
“You kissed
Yugi?” asks Seto with equally wide eyes.
“It was
just a kiss on the cheek!” exclaims Mokuba, “It’s not like he really understood
what it meant anyway! Next time I think I’ll have to kiss him on the lips to
make him understand I like him!”
“Oh no you
won’t! You’re too young!” shouts Seto.
“You like
Yugi?” asks Katsuya.
“I’ve liked
Yugi for a long time,” says Mokuba blushing, “He’s very cute.”
“He is at
that,” says Katsuya smiling.
“Seto… you
should go get dressed for school!” exclaims Mokuba.
“We will
talk about Yugi after school, Mokuba!” exclaims Seto.
“If you say
so!”
Seto heads
out of the kitchen with the last of his bagel and heads up to change into his
school uniform.
“You like
Yugi? Wow!” exclaims Katsuya.
“Mm-hmm,”
says Mokuba as Katsuya finishes eating. “I can’t decide who I really want
though… Yugi or Honda?”
“They are
both my best friends, Mokuba, and to be completely honest with you… I think
your best bet is Yugi. Honda is completely straight, I’m afraid. And Yugi is
gay with bisexual tendencies,” says Katsuya, “Plus… Yugi would treat you right.
If you were with Honda, he’d probably pressure you into his bed before you were
ready. I love him like a brother, but I wouldn’t trust him with my sister’s
heart if you understand what I mean.”
“Yeah… I
think I do,” says Mokuba smiling, “So do you think I should go for Yugi?”
“Um… I think
you should be asking Kaiba that question,” says Katsuya.
“Seto
thinks I’m too young,” says Mokuba.
“Maybe you
are.”
Mokuba
pouts. “I’m not!”
After a
moment of silence, Seto returns to the kitchen wearing his school uniform.
“Let’s go.”
“Great!”
exclaims Katsuya jumping from his seat and hurrying towards the door.
“What did
you do to him?” asks Seto raising an eyebrow.
“I asked
him if he thought I should ask Yugi out,” says Mokuba standing up and moving to
grab his book bag.
“Oh, no you
don’t!” exclaims Seto chasing Mokuba out to the limo where Katsuya stands
waiting for them.
The three
boys climb into the back, and the limo heads off to take them to school.
Seto stares
at Katsuya as the blond talks to his younger brother. His mind fades away in a
trance-like state.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaiba walks around in the
dark, hearing quiet sobs. “Who’s there? What’s wrong?”
The sobs
grow louder as Kaiba sees a light up ahead.
Kaiba
runs towards the light. He soon sees that the light is a streetlamp, and it
illuminates a crying blond-haired person. “Hey! What’s wrong? Why are you
crying?”
A loud
lament is Kaiba’s only response as the blond head lifts so cold, honey-brown
eyes to look at him.
“Katsuya!”
exclaims Kaiba stopping just past the edge of the circle of light, “What’s
wrong? Why are you crying? Talk to me, and maybe I can help.”
Jou
shakes his head. “You can’t help, Seto.”
Kaiba
steps forward. At the ring of light, he runs into an invisible barrier.
“No one
can help me… Kami knows that I’ve tried to get help. No one can help me,” says
Jou wiping away his tears for a new wave of tears to fall from his eyes, “He
got drunk last night. I’ve never seen him have more than one beer before, but
he was really drunk. I think I have a dozen broken ribs to prove it.”
“That
fucking bastard! No one has the right to hurt you other than me! You are my
dog!” exclaims Kaiba.
“I’m not
his dog anymore,” says Jou, “I can’t take it anymore. I am going to a place
where he can’t hurt me again. A place where his cop buddies can’t find me to
bring me back to him. A place where I can finally rest in peace and not be
afraid of how bad he’s going to beat me next time. A place where someone might
finally be able to love me, where maybe I can love myself.”
“Where
are you going, Katsuya?” asks Kaiba, “You can come live with me if you need to!
Your father won’t find you. I won’t let him hurt you again! You are my puppy.
I’ll protect you!”
“You
can’t protect me, master,” says Jou. He lifts his left wrist for Kaiba to see
the blood dripping from the open wound.
“Katsuya!”
screams Kaiba trying to force his way through the invisible barrier, “No! You
can’t kill yourself!”
Jou
lifts a knife from the ground at his feet, and he raises the blade to his right
wrist. He looks at Kaiba as he slices open the skin. “I’m sorry, Seto… I can’t
live this life, this lie, anymore! I’m sorry!”
“Katsuya!”
screams Kaiba.
The
light flickers once, then twice, and Kaiba forces himself through to Jou’s side
in the fraction of a second that the light remains out on its third flicker.
“I’m
sorry, Seto,” says Jou.
Kaiba
kneels beside Jou. “Katsuya, you can’t die. There are too many people who will
miss you!”
“I know.
Hey, do you suppose you could say good-bye to all of them for me?” Jou smiles.
“I know they would appreciate it, and I’m sure that you and they will all need
a friend after I’m gone. They’ll need someone to replace me in their circle,
and you’ll need someone to replace me in your dreams… You can tell them about
these dreams. Aside from the ones with my father, these dreams of yours have
been the best time of my life!”
“You’re
not going to die! I can’t let you!” exclaims Kaiba lifting Jou in his arms
bridal style. He walks to the edge of the light and tries to carry Jou through,
but he finds the invisible barrier there once more.
“Thank
you for caring, Seto,” says Jou. He closes his eyes, and his body slumps in
Kaiba’s arms.
“No!”
screams Kaiba falling to his knees and pulling Jou’s chest up against his own.
He holds Jou tighter as he feels the life leaving the body of his only true
friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey,
Kaiba! We’re at school now,” says Katsuya.
Seto shakes
his head and grabs Katsuya’s arm, vaguely aware that his brother was already deposited
at his school. “Are you all right, Jou?”
Katsuya
blinks at Seto. “What do you mean? I feel fine. You were the one who was out
cold with your eyes open!”
“I mean
with everything that’s happened to you… with your father,” says Seto, “I know
it can be rough living in an abusive home, and sometimes you think the only way
out is to end it all.”
“What do
you mean? You know it can be rough?” Katsuya’s eyes widen. “Have you ever…?”
“My
stepfather was rough on me too,” says Seto, “There were times when I wanted to
kill myself. Mokuba’s the only reason I held myself back.”
“I’m sorry.
I never knew… We are just as alike as we are different… I’ve had those times
too, but I have more people keeping me alive. No matter how bad my life gets, I
can’t put the pain of my death on Yugi,” says Katsuya, “I don’t want him to go
through that. I have to live for Shizuka and Yugi. If it wasn’t for me, Yugi
might not have any friends now. I was his first friend. He stood up for me, and
then I offered him my friendship. Sometimes I want to die, but I think about
what my leaving would do to him. I can’t do that.”
“Good.”
Seto smiles. “Let’s go or you’ll be late to class again.”
Katsuya
smiles as he climbs from the limo.
Seto climbs
out after Katsuya, and they carry their bags of books inside.
“Um… I
guess I don’t need two sets of glasses now, do I?” asks Katsuya as he walks
beside Seto towards their lockers.
“One of
them is still to be used strictly for school,” says Seto, “That was the deal
when I got them for you.”
Katsuya
nods. He opens his locker and starts sorting his books into it.
